Features
:
Pickup features: passive piezo plate from the buzzer
Impedence or other specs: it's not meant for this
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Yamaha 100SD (solid body electric)
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: none, testing this to see how it was
Other pickups on guitar: stock Yamahas in the neck and bridge positions
Artists using this pickup: the other people who have reviewed these
You musical style(s): rock, metal, blues
Reason for pickup change: I wanted to experiment after reading about how great these were, as I was interested in getting a more acoustic sound out of my electric for recording.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Extremely quiet, kind of nasal, basically what an electric sounds like unplugged
Tone: balanced tone when mounted on the back of the body, very trebly when mounted on the front.
Sonic evaluation: I'm playing this through my DOD G6 practice amp. When I turn the amp up to 8 or 9 (normally well beyond bedroom levels) the output is enough to be heard at a bedroom level. It also gains some frequency range here too. At normal volume levels (about 3) it is almost inaudible.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I was looking to get a more acoustic sound out of my electric, and read about what a great value these were. I think it would sound great with a small preamp.
Overall Rating
:
8
Comments: If the pickup broke, I don't know if I'd get another one. It's too quiet to be of any real use without a preamp, but for $5 and some wire it's a fantastic value. Other reviewers have claimed to not be able to hear the difference between this and a $100 guitar-made piezo. I doubt that, but I'm sure this $5 pickup sounds great in an acoustic guitar, what with the much higher resonance of acoustics.
I'm planning on building a preamp to go with this and I expect it will solve the weak sound and the output level problems.
