Not sure of the wood used but it is solid. Looks like maple on back. Has a tiger quilting on back and a sunburst on topside, Dreadnought body style. Usual chrome alvarez type tuners. Triple binding around guitar body, none on neck or head stock. Has nice mother of perl snow flake inlays for fret markers. Has a rose wood fret board. Made in Japan 1979. Headstock has a trust rod cover says S.L.M. stands for St. Louis Missouri This guitar was made in a shop in Japan, then imported to S.L.M. for set up and inspection.
Sound

I have been playing since 1971. This guitar sounds full rounded lots of tone. I have gone to the biggest guitar retailer in California and this guitar sounds better than guitars costing $1.000 + It has the brightness of a Martin, and the midrange of a Gibson. Due to the projection of the guitar I believe it to be made of solid woods free of any laminate. If there is another guitar that sounds this good for under $400.00 I have never had the pleasure. If you see one of these for sale grab it, you will be very pleased.
Action, Fit, & Finish

The action is comfortable and frets do not buzz at all. If I hit the Low E string hard it takes it like a true champ. I finger pick and it sounds so sweet. The tuners are not the best, they can't be to bad thirty years later they still work. I do want to up grade the tuners and change out the plastic bridge. pins, and nut.
Reliability/Durability

The quality is there, back in the day, made in Japan was and still is some of the most desirable gear for your money. Strap buttons are made of plastic would like to up grade to a locking strap button.

I have been playing since about 1971. I own one other Alvarez acoustic the base model I bought from a friend it was made in Korea. I was so impressed with the base model I wanted to dig deeper into my pocket, so glad I did. I own a bunch of Electric guitars a G&L mid 80's broadcaster the neck pocket is signed by Leo Fender. I have a mid 80's MIJ Fender Telecaster a very cool guitar. The rest of my collection is mostly made up of custom built Telecasters I put together with my gear hound friend. I also own a baritone Dan Electro and one mid 70"s strat. If I lost this guitar I would hunt the world over to replace it. I love everything about the guitar except the tuners and plastic strap button, plastic bridge and nut all of witch I replaced and now the guitar is awesome and for the price and the fact that it's 30yrs. old witch really helps the tone, what else can I say?
