I play several different styles, just for fun, but I use this guitar mostly for playing praise and worship at my church.
This guitar tends to project sound extremely well. I really like to full sound created by the round back. Some may interpret the unplugged sound as a little harsh. I think it just has a very strong projection. It was a little "twangy" when I plugged directly into an amp or sound system, but corrected that with an inexpensive Zoom 505 effects pedal (added a little chorus and a touch of distortion).
In general, the sound is very bright. I made the mistake of putting Martin medium strings on it, which tend to sound bright on most guitars. This compounded the problem, but I have not gotten around to changing them yet.
If I could improve one thing, it would be the pickup. It barely amplifies my high E string, and it only has tone and volume control. I would prefer at least separate bass, mid, and treble.

Setup was good when I purchased the instrument. It stays in tune extremely well (after strings are broken in, of course).
I am considering replacing this guitar because of the action. I have adjusted it as far down as it will go, but it is still quite high. The string spacing is consistent and works well for me, but the distance of the strings from the fingerboard makes playing for more than a half hour very painful, even with rock-hard finger callouses. It is high in the lower frets and virtually unplayable in the upper frets.
The finish was as good as could be expected (for a lower end guitar) when I purchased it. It has since developed two cracks in the finish on the front of the body, extending the length of the body.

Most of the hardware seems durable. The finish, as I stated earlier, has developed some cracking that does not affect the sound or playability. The ring around the sound hole also had to be reglued.
I have played it somewhat heavily for almost 2 years, and, so far, there is no wear that has affected playability. The neck is straight, the tuners hold fast. The bridge has not moved and seems to have worn well.

I would have bought a "deep bowl" if I were going to play this as a straight acoustic. But since I bought this with the intention of plugging it in, it has the exact acoustic sound I wanted.

Manufacturer stated that they wouldn't repair/replace a broken head, and despite my guitar being labeled as being made in China, their response stated that:
"The Applause guitars are made in Korea and we do not stock replacement assemblies like necks and top/bowl assemblies, sorry.
You might want to try a local service center to see if it can be repaired.
You can find one on our website under Warranty Service, click on the Ovation list and enter your state rather than zip code to get a larger selection of them in your area."

I actually play the drums, and have done so for more than 25 years. I picked this guitar up in 1998 to double as a Christmas present for my wife, and to have around for others to play if anybody stopped by. I loved it until a recent beer drinking incident allowed some stupid individual to set it down on the floor, and another person to unintentionally step on the head and break it. Kaman Music recommended contacting a local shop for possible repair. All the local shops claim that the Applause Line is "the cheapest of the cheap." They in turn immediately offer to sell me a new and more expensive guitar. I really liked it, and while I'm not a guitar player per-say, I've certainly played my share of all major brands of both acoustic and electric guitars. I liked this one as much, or more than any other guitar I've ever played, and I liked it even more in that it wasn?t overpriced. I'm currently looking for a replacement, and the only things I'm considering doing differently are to go with a black color instead of "natural," and getting a 12-string this time.

This is a follow-up to an earlier review. First, I'll say after 2 years of ownership and countless playing area, this thing holds up quite well. I removed a small piece from beneath the saddle and lowered the action to a good height for me. Be careful though, low saddle and light guage strings lead to buzzing. Also, my pickup just went out. If you buy this guitar be prepared to replace the pickup in about a year. However, love this guitar.

I learned to play acoustic on this guitar. I recently switched it in for an Ovation Celebrity, but I would really advice this guitar to beginning players. I would use it certainly as backup guitar in an aocustic gig. Acoustic sound is a bit thin. When amplified it just sounds great. When amplified with a bass amplifier is sounds like a 747 landing in your front garden. Brilliant. I disliked the fact that I had to keep my tone control to '0' because otherwise the sound was too sharp. But I could regulate the sound on the amplifier

No flaws except for the above mentioned pickup failure.

I would use it on a gig without backup. I took this guitar everywhere and it kept on playing. Finishin is rockstable. Solid strap buttons (I don't need them because I sit down when I play but yeah...)

I play for 3 years now. I own some guitars: epiphone sheraton, squire tele, ovation celebrity, old maison strat copy, alliance acoustic...
I played the applause for 1,5 year. I didn't regret buying it for 1 millisecond. If it was stolen, i would congratulate the thief for excellent taste. It looks unusual compared to the dull looking acoustic jumbo's and folk guitars. It looks beautiful. It was love in the first sight.
Fantastic guitar for a fantastic price. Unbeatable price/quality

This is a 1999 Model. I bought it new. It was made in China. It has 21 useable frets. It has a Tone and Gain Controls, not EQ but for the price very functional. It has a laminated top. This is a shallow round back with a cut away. Typical Ovation bridge (pin-style bridges are freakin irritating) The tuners are tight and hold tune well. The neck is average size for an acoustic. No accessories came with it.

This guitar suits my sytle fine. I write most of my songs to this guitar, and I like that I don't have to plug it in to play. I usally just put this guitar in to a Peavy P.A. system, it sounds good. The sound is excellent for a thin guitar. I have found no flaws that affect the playability of this guitar.

This guitar stands up on gig very well, it is a tank. All the hardware is tight and well constructed. I love that Applause put two strap buttons on their guitars. I depend on this guitar, I would gig in Antartica without a back up with this thing.

I LOVE this guitar, if it was stolen, after I killed the guy who stole it, it would buy another. I looked for six months at many acoustic electrics from Ibanez, Johnson, Rogue, Gibson, Tayor and Martin and none of those combined the affordable price with quality workmanship and sound of the Applause. Applause for Applause.

the action was terrible when i got the guitar, i had it adjusted, and was better, but not great, there was a "buzz" on the 1st fret, high e, which took about two years to work it self out, i took it to a dealer, but they couldnt fix it. the high e also used to get stuck on 12th fret bar, which stuck out the end, however now it has worn it down, and i have no problems with it currently.

very durrible, i have smashed this baby all over, and the only ding it has to show is a chip from when it was dropped on to cement floor. i patched it, and it does not affect the tone of the guitar, which is the real important thing. i would drop this guitar out of a car going 60 miles an hour and have faith in it.
