Mahogony back side, I think the neck is ebony, not a glossy finish, hand rubbed I think, no binding very plain but functional. The neck size was not as listed on the Gibson site. The nut width is supposed to be 1.75 (1& 3/4") inches. It is actually closer to 1.68 inches (1 & 11/16") or even smaller. Was very disappointed, if I wanted a cheap dobro with an electric style neck there are many other options. I will have to retuirn the guitar, not usable for fingerstlye.
Sound

Sound like a spider cone dobro, slightly better that the average far east imported resonator guitar. I also own a squareneck model and the sound is particularly clear on the upper register. sound very nice. you will not great sound out this, it is not going to be distinct like Tut Taylor or a Beard.

Because the neck is so narrow it is not suitable for my kind of playing, You have to move the spider around to find the right spot, other gibsons I have owned seem to have rattling/buzzing problems, more so than Nationals or even Johnsons, you are always moving the bridge to get it to stop buzzing. Every thing looks to fit pretty well, remember this is a $ 350 guitar so it is made like one, nothing special!
Reliability/Durability

It is probably as durable as need be. I would use as a street mucician but not on any gig i really cared about. I wanted something I could use in school so that my students could play it and I would not be concerned if they scratched it, prone to accidents.

In the various times I have contacted Gibson I have been disappointed, the last time I bout a Gibson I swore that I would never buy a NEW one again. Then I got soft and gave them another try, big mistake, they are pretty indifferent once thay have your money. I have tried to contact them about this current purchase and they have yet to respond, as usual.

I would not buy another, I gave them another chance and as the saying goes "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice and shame on me!". If someone stole it I would collect the insurance and be happy! Replace it, are you kidding!
