My Guild D4-NT is a '97 model. I bought it used, but it is still in mint condition. Usual specs: solid spruce top, laminate arched back, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, grover tuners, satin finish, bone saddle and nut. Beautifully thin neck, it's almost like playing my strat.

Sound : 10
As a Country singer/songwriter, I was looking for an acoustic to write with and to play solo jobs, and she fits the bill perfectly. I passed on a Martin D15 to get her after strumming a few chords. The sound is rich and full with the emphasis on midrange tones. I've read a few reviews where they act like this is a bad thing, but for me she is perfect.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Bought her used, so I couldn't say about the factory setup. When I got it, all I had to do was tweak the neck and it played like a dream. Whoever had it before me took really good care of her. There are a couple of superficial nicks (which only give her character)and the barroom smoke is starting to darken the spruce top. Was bookmatched perfectly, you can't even see a line.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've had her for a year now and no problems. I was worried about the satin finish at first, but there was no need. She's been all over the country and still going strong. I had to add a neck strap button and put in a Rare Earth single coil pickup. I depend on it and gig with it every night without hesitation, my Takamine stays at home now.

What's good or bad is individual. After playing 29 years, I know what I like. I'm not a collector, I'm a player. I own a '96 strat, a 2000 Takamine and my Guild. If it were lost or stolen, I'd try to find another one as good as this one. If not, I'd go with another Guild. I'm sold on them now.

My Guild was made in 96 in Westerley, RI. It is a dreadnaught with an arched back. The top is a solid spruce top with the satin finish (not glossy), the back and sides are laminated mahogany, neck I am unsure about. The tuners are Grover. The nut and saddle appear to be bone or bone-like but I need to get good endpins. Guild spent more money with a good nut and saddle than a "pretty" rosette.
This is a pretty basic, plain jane guitar, but for what I paid and for the sounds that it can create I have no qualms.

Sound : 9
Like many Guilds, it's strenght lies in the midrange sounds. They are usually the dominating waves coming out of the soundhole, but the lows and the highs come out beautifully when I want them to.
I play more strumming but the occasional finger picking sounds good on the Guild. I like playing mostly folk to rock type music and this guitar handles it. It can really project should you need/want it to.

I got this guitar used so I am unsure of what it would look like for the factory.
When I first got it, the guitar had obviously seen some use. Some of the frets were worn but they still have a long time to go before replacing. There's a stain right above the sound hole and 6th string which looks like a previous owner rested his/her hand there while picking or who knows what. The pickguard was a little scarred up and some pick marks around the guard.
The action was a bit high so I sanded down the saddle about 1/16th to an 1/8th of an inch. The action was a lot better but the sound still wasn't what I though it could be, so, I sent it to my friendly guitar man (not a luthier but he could be). He set it up and must have tweaked the truss rod because it was a dream when it came back. He also said some of the bracing was coming apart on the side by the beginning of the bell curve and he glued it for me (what a guy).
I'll be honest when I first got this guitar I did not think I would own it for very long but now, with the adjustments, I will alwys have this guitar. The more I play it the more I want to play it more (?)
Again this is not a flashy guitar but it's still beautiful.

Reliability/Durability : 9
This guitar seems exremely solid. My only complaint is a catch 22, the finish. The satin finish, I think, is lighter than the glossy finishes so this allows the top to vibrate with less impedence. The downside is that the top is not as well protected from stains and scratches as a gloss finish. Sometimes you can't win.
Besides that whole issue I love this guitar. This guitar withstands live playing and would not need a backup (although you'd be less than brilliant without one).

N/A Guild is now owned by Fender. Dealing with larger corporations can be less than pleasant.

Overall Rating : 10
This guitar has done nothing but grow on me every single day. I have owned it now for over 6 months. I have a Takamine F385 12 string, an Epiphone SG, and a Fender Telecaster. I love all of my guitars but lately these others must be getting jelous of the Guild. It just feels right in my hands and right in my ears and with all of that in mind this guitar was most certainly right for me.

Ofcourse Made in USA. Guild D4-NT HR, unfinished, grover tuners. Gota love the look, I'm not a big polised or plastic acoustics kinda guy. It has a bulge on the backside, from what I know it helps the sound. I got a kickass deal so no complaints.

Sound : 9
The guitar is quieter than most other acoustics, but the sound is very warm and the tone is still clear. That's what I look for on an acoustic, not the bright strong tones. I use this guitar to sing with, I also have an electric and a nylon string classical for other styles of playing.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Everything is perfect, except for a little bit of sticky substance around the pickguard. Not noticeable until dirt settles there.

Reliability/Durability : 8
I had it for about 4 years now and it still looks new and sounds new, except for two small knicks I accidnetally put on. I've used it for gigs a few times with a dean pickup, but if you're relying to use it for live performances, you might want to look at ones with built in pickups. Must take good care of the finish on the front side because it knicks easily.

Been playing for 9 years and I own just about everything I need for my own band. Pearl Drums, Korg Sythesizers, Fender American Bass, Yamaha electric guitar, and that's excluding the pianos and violins and saxophones and etc. Too many to list. I say this guitar is probably the best value from everything I own. I compared it to Martin, Yamaha, Takamine, and Gibson. Martin and Gibsons were too expansive and the Japanese acoustics then to have brighter tone than I like. I really like this guitar, what can I say?

Stamped May 3, 1997. Came with a nice case. Basic dreadnaught, with the main difference being the slightly arched back that has no bracing. I like plain looking guitars, and this one fit the bill. The only modification was the addition of a peg strap at the base of the neck.

Sound : 7
Ovarall, nice sounding, though, perhaps a little lacking in the low range. Projects more when you are sitting than when you are standing, which I think is due to the braceless design of the back of the guitar. This design seems to rely on the back peice for a lot of the volume, so when you stand up and play, and the back peice rests against your stomach, and mutes things somewhat. In use, this isn't really a problem for me, as I use a transducer when I'm standing, anyway.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The guitar felt great from the start. In fact, it's probably what sold me on it. I find the thin neck very comfortable and responsive. Serious problems arose, however, when I moved from humidity-laden Texas to very dry Colorado. Within a week the strings were laying on the fretboard, and the top was splitting at the center glue line. Not really the guitars fault, though it does seem particularly fussy about humidity levels. I now keep it in a room with a humidifier, which has taken care of things. Otherwise, all glue joints are perfect, and it seems to be assembled very well.

Reliability/Durability : 6
I have only recently started performing again, and have used it three times in front of a crowd. The satin finish is already showing some wear, but that's the trade-off with satin finishes. I don't mind a guitar looking like it has been played, and this one is starting to look that way. Because of the neck's sensitivity to the environment, I'm not sure that it is best suited for life on the road.

no comments, never had to deal with them.

Overall Rating : 7
I really like this guitar, though I think it is at its best as a songrwiting partner at home. I'll always use it in this regard, though I'm looking to get an additional guitar for performing. Someone else reviewed it and mentioned that it loves to be tuned down - i'd have to agree. I often drop both E's down to D and strum all afternoon. For some reason this is when it really seems to be at its best sonicwise.

Not sure of the year, guessing late 90s usa made. Pretty basic dreadnaught, with satin finish, nice solid Grover tuning machines, and a big pick guard. Long scaale. pretty darn basic, but its an entry level Guild, so what the heck do you expect.

Sound : 6
I strum pop tunes, thats about all. Nice full bass, slightly boomy which I like, and very mellow. I think it could use a bit more midrange to it.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
bought it used , the action seemed ok. The fret wire is rather skimpy, causing buzzyness if you dont press down hard. All else seems ok. Appears to be solid overall.

Reliability/Durability : 6
Strong, heavy. Should last. The lack of back bracing is an interesting way of construction. Not sure about the structure ability of it with that back.

Never dealt with them.

Been playing 5 years. Also own a Tele, a Larrivee dreadnaught, a Norman Dreadnaught, and a backpacker. I'm looking to sell it privately only a week after I bought it. REally not immpressed, and I just got a new Larrivee which looks and plays 10x better than the Guild. The fret wire is way too puny, looks like it will wear fast. No midrange. Seems heavy. NEck is chunky. Not a fan of it.

This is a solid spruce top guitar with a rounded back. It has a mahogany body. It has a rosewood fretboard and bridge. I added a Martin Thinline Goldplus pickup. It's finished in high gloss which costs extra but it's worth it.

Sound : 8
Everyone who has played this guitar plugged or unplugged comments on the sweet sound it possesses. It has great sustain and rich harmonics and bold midrange with the right blend of bottom and top end. It projects real well. It will cut through any mix I promise. I use phosphor bronze strings.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The action was a little bit high especially after the pickup was installed. But a minor neck adjustment took care of it. The guitar played perfect from the factory. No blemishes or flaws. The bookmark looks as if it is a solid piece.

Reliability/Durability : 10
The first three frets are wearing a little bit quick it seems. But hey, I've played this guitar solid for almost two years now typically a minimum of an hour everyday and then gigging with it to boot. I added a strap button at the neck. No problem there. This guitar is definitely rugged and I would use it without a backup. The finish is tough as nails.

Customer Support : 5
This guitar has a liftime limited warranty. If there's a defect in the workmanship or the materials they will fix it. I keep a Dampit in it when not playing it to maintain 50%-60% rh. I have never had any problems with this guitar. I've never dealt with the manufacturer.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing almost three years now. I bought a '62 Strat reissue before this purchase. It was an impulse buy. I was very informed about this purchase. I would replace it if stolen. I love the sound and the fact I didn't spend a thousand dollars to get that sound! I compared it to Larivee, Martin, Taylor, Alvarez, and Washburn. For the price this guitar lacks nothing.

1992 pre Fender, D sized, Solid Spruce Top (Great Wood), Mahogany Sides and Back. The NT designates a satin/natural finish. The guitar features a mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard and bridge. I purchased the guitar used with an original Guild HSC. The Grover tuners are excellent...this thing stays in tune well!

Sound : 8
The guitar loves to be tuned down! Sounds good in standard tuning...sounds better in DADGAD or DGDGBD. Its not a terribly loud guitar, but its sound is very balanced and full.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The original action was a bit high...I had a custom saddle made and it did wonders. The overall finish is very good. The satin does tend to get dull.

Reliability/Durability : 9
This guitar is a battle axe! Its at home gigging or recording...very dependable!

Overall Rating : 9
Overall a really good deal! I havent played any recent models (Fender Owned) but, mines a keeper. Im looking to buy another Guild soon as well.
