The finish is not one of my favorites: satin gets a little noisy when you amplify the instrument. But enough rubbing with a soft rag makes it a little glossy.
The body style is a Dreadnought. Comes with gold Grovers. Were a little tight, had to loosen them with a small Phillips.
Mine is a 1992. Looks like Guild made them only for one or two years. The wood is all solid. Spruce top, mahogany back and sides. White binding all around. Everything just like Guild's most popular guitar, a D-40, but with satin finish.

Sound : 9
The D-6 suits my style very well. I play a lot of solo instrumental fingerpicking pop tunes, and I like the boomy bass, crisp highs, and well, a little bit of lack of midrange. No pickup yet, but will most likely outfit it with my favorite, the Fishman Rare Earth Blend. Also, the guitar has a real thumping sound; very useful when doing slap-bass style picking.
I really like the narrow neck, so unlike Guilds. The frets could be a little higher.
I replaced the bridge saddle, the pins, and the nut with Tusc right away. So I don't really know what the guitar would have sounded like with the original hardware, I just like what Tusq parts do to any instrument.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I bought the guitar used, and the strings on it were light gauge electric, so the action was real low. I fixed it by adding the afore-mentioned Tusq parts, and installing light gauge acoustic strings.
Guitar had a lot of knicks and small scratches, and they came out with an overnight treatment of vaseline on each little knick. A hint from Heloise that came in handy!
No flaws to this instrument. As with most Guilds, they come from the factory very well made, and built to last, like my Ford Van.

Reliability/Durability : 7
Everything on this guitar looks solid. As with most Guilds, like I said, they are well built, and I can and will depend on this instrument to last any job I take it to.
The feel of the rosewood neck combined with the mahogany body is something I will have to get used to, as opposed to my other three Guilds, all of which are rosewood back and sides, and ebony fingerboards. How this D-6 will react live will be determined by how I feel with it after playing 2 - 3 hours. Have not tried that yet.
I would use a backup guitar on a gig, only to break up the monotony a little from this particular guitar, and go with my classical, or my small bodied Martin, which has a different timbre than any of my other Guilds. And, I would do that with any other combination of guitars I use on stage.

No warranty, bought it used. Any repairs or modifications I either do it myself, or have qualified luthiers in town I go to. Guild is now in Tacoma, and have no experince with them as of yet.
The only time I dealt with Guild was about 20 years ago, when I needed a problem fixed on my 1982 D-50. Sent it out to them in Westerly, and it came back with the face of the fingerboard slighty shaved off, and they didn't fix the problem.
I do not recommend going to them for anything, just find someone in town who is a qualified service warranty repairman.

I have been playing for 42 years as of this December 2006. In addition to the D-6, I have 3 custom-made Strats, all customized by me; a Martin 00-15, and Guilds: a '82 D-50, '92 F-30R (my favorite as of now), a '03 Fender-made F47-RCE, and my dad's old Silvertone arch top, from 1932, which he fixed up for me when I was 12, and gave me my first lesson.
I bought this guitar sight unseen, on E-bay, and the price was pretty low for what I thought to be a more expensive guitar. It plays like a more expensive guitar. (paid $225!)
If I lost this D-6, I would probably not go crazy looking for another one, just continue my search for the holy grail, another F-30 or F-30R.
What I love most about the D-6, is the light weight, and the warm sound it has. And the small neck. So comfortable to play. I guess I would campare it to a maple bodied guitar, because of its warmth, and boomy bass. I wish it had slighty larger frets, but the ones on it are okay, and I wouldn't go through the cost of replacing them.

1995 All solid Mahogany/Spruce, basic but what more do you want! I fitted a B-Band AST to it, which I'm not impressed with at all - way too boomy and susceptible to feedback, I will try an under-saddle pickup next and expect it to be better.

Sound : 9
Great acoustic sound - having tried all sorts of solid dreadnoughts, mostly much, much more expensive, this thing is great. Compares well to Martins costing 3x as much - really!
A tech set it up recently and took the action down too low, which killed the tone, but I went up a gauge to 13's, and tweaked the truss-rod for a bit more relief, and it's come alive again - sounds even better than ever with the heavier strings!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Really very good indeed!

Reliability/Durability : 9
Solid, have used it live a number of times, and apart from the pickup feeding back all the time (not the guitars fault, I fitted it!), it is great. A different pickup and it should be sorted.

Customer Support : No Opinion
No idea, I bought it used.

Overall Rating : 9
Great guitar - try finding another all solid acoustic for this price, if you see one, buy it!

1992 USA RI serial #19 Solid spruce top / solid mahogany sides and back. Grover tuners. NT is natural color. HG is High Gloss lacquer finish.

Sound : 9
The string spacing is a bit narrow for finger picking but I do not have real large hands. This instrument has a great voice especially in the tenor range. It has that jangely sound... not quite Martin like but very full and even lows to highs.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Lacquer finish is outstanding. They also made these with the modern day satin (non lacquered) finish. I think it takes a keen ear to hear the differences in finish effects on sound but with lacquer I never have the shirt sleeve swishing sound (as with no lacquer) problem with a close microphone etc.
All the bracing, gluing, joints are A+. I would prefer slightly larger fret wire....my taste.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Built to last. The truss rod is still doing it's job after 10 years.
I do not have the 12 - 14 fret hump problem on this guitar typical of many Guilds.

Called Guild once at Rhode Island plant. Very friendly and helpful.
Does Fender own Guild now ? Too bad

Overall Rating : 9
Bang for the buck this thing gets all high marks. These guitars rated highly in an early 1990's Guitar Player Magazine $500-$900 price range review. No buyers remorse here.
