I believe it was a 2001 model D04. Honduras Mahogany sides and back, spruce top, Mahogany neck and ebony fretboard. Elixer Medium guage strings and Larrivee Hardshell case. It looks very minimal.

I wanted to get a Dreadnaught after selling my 1995 Taylor 412(Mahogany back and sides back then) which was suited for a fingerpicking style. The Taylor I had was very bright sounding and somewhat lacking in bass. I liked the sound of Mahogany than Rosewood. The action and sound was more rounder than my Taylor 412. People compares the sound of Larrivees to a mix between Taylors and Martins. I think it is closer to a Taylor(which is known to be on the brighter side) with a little more bass. For me it was what I was looking for.
I am giving it a 9 cause I have heard better sounding guitars but those were just ridiculously priced.

The set up was good. I happened to try another D04 and that had a much higher action. So I guess at the Factory they set it up differently. I prefer a lower action without buzz. The finish is gloss and the spruce top has streaks which I guess people call it bearclaw spruce top.(or something like that)
Pretty much it`s a simple looking gutiar. The dots on the fretboards is minimal and the pickguard is a clear mylar sheet. I don`t mind what the guitar looks as long as the sound is good.

So far it looks reliable. I knocked the edge and it didn`t even make a dent nor scratch. I think the gloss is thick enough that it would probably last.
I would never do a gig without a backup.

I emailed Larrivee and it took them a few days(maybe cause I emailed around Christmas) but they were very informative and helpful.

I am mainly a electric gutiar player but I have played several acoustic gutiars and I think this is a great guitar for the value. I think if you wanted a Taylor Mahogany model you would probably have to pay over a $1000 easily. Even though Larrivee`s don`t use a bolt on neck like Taylor or Tacoma, I believe the craftsmanship is there and is durable. I really can`t hear the differenc between the bolt on necks like Taylors to the traditional Dovetail like Martins.
I liked the sound of the guitar and the playability. I think before trying a Taylor you should give Larrivee`s a try. Especially if you are looking at Taylor 300 or 400 models cause Larrivee D04`s are solid Mahogany and gloss finish compared to Sapele or Ovangkol and satin finish.(and sounds a little fuller)
I was looking at Tacoma DM18`s, Taylor 410, Taylor 510 prior to purchasing this guitar. I would say Tacoma`s were good too but this Larrivee sounded a little better plus the price was very close to the Tacoma and much lower than a Taylor Mahogany 510. The Taylors were priced a little to high for my opinion. Especially after getting rid of my Taylor 412 I was in a mood for a different brand.
If it was stolen I would be pissed(wouldn`t you????) and probably buy it or try a different Larrivee just to see what`s out there.
It all comes down to your tastes especially when it comes to picking up an acoustic guitars. I have heard a wonderful sounding Taylor 510 and a horrible sounding Taylor 810. Even with Martins, Larrivee Lowden, Breedlove etc etc... So pretty much I recomend to try out different models and brands and chose what you want.

This is a beautifully put together instrument. The D-04 features a solid spruce top, with solid mahogany sides, cream binding and a gloss finish. Let me say that these woods look absolutely gorgeous under the gloss finish... the look is about as nice as you can get without getting into fancy inlays.

The sound of this guitar is INCREDIBLE. I actually went into Guitar Center planning to buy a Taylor 310. Of course, though, when I saw this pretty Larrivee D-04 hanging on the wall, I had to try it. Now, the Taylor 310 is quite a good guitar, but this blew it away. The Larrivee sings.. thats the best word I can use to describe it. Each string has great articulation and the guitar offers a very balanced tone. The guitar is wonderful for finger picking and strumming alike. I also compared this to martins in the price range and found the sound to be far superior. Play a D-04! You'll have trouble putting it down.

The action on this guitar is great. The finish, as I said before, is really pretty. I don't know much about how one gloss finish differs from the next, but it appears to me to be of the highest quality.

My D-04 is a very made guitar. I have only owned it for about a week so I cannot say how it will last.. but I feel as though this will be a guitar I can depend on. Also, the gloss finish seems to be quite protective.

I absolutely am in love with this guitar. From the look, to the feel, to the sound... I couldn't ask for more. I really understood how truly special this instrument is when I went back to Guitar Center about 6 days after buying it to pick up a pack of strings. Of course, being compulsive as I am, I had to go into the acoustic guitar room and play all the guitars that were there and make sure I made the right choice. I prefered the sound of my larrivee to any of the higher priced martins or taylors they had in stock. I feel truly privaledged to have been able to purchase a guitar for a little over $800 and feel completely happy with it. If my larrivee were stolen, I'd definately get another, after sulking for a while of course =) The best advice I can give anyone checking out a Larrivee is to get to a store and play one. I think it will impress you.

The guitar is 2000 model dreadnought. It has a gloss finish, solid wood construction with a sitka spruce top, mahogany back and sides. The wood has what they call bear claw straks in it which makes it look really cool.

This is the main reason I bought the guitar. I've played Taylor, Martin, Takamine, Yamaha, Guild and frankly at this price there was just no comparison. The resonance of the guitar is very pure, nice a nice full rich sound. I like to play a variety of music from rock to country and it fits all my styles.

So far the guitar has no problems with buzzing or playability. The elixir strings that come on it sound great. The craftmanship of the guitar is solid, everything looks properly aligned and there are no smudges or shoddy parts to it.

I think if you take care of any guitar and store it in a case regularly, you should have little problems. I trust it to perform for me although time can only tell the durability of the guitar.

I haven't really directly dealt with them although I sent them an e-mail about some information on guitars prior to my purchase and they did not respond. I don't know if they never got the message or they were just to busy to respond. It kind of ticked me off, but I got my answers from someone else and bought the guitar anyway.

Well, when I first was in the market for a guitar, I though I would have to spend around $1100-$1200 to get the sound I wanted. I had a Takamine which was a descent guitar, but it just didn't have the high quality sound I was looking for. I looked at Taylors, Martins, Guilds, etc but when I found the Larrivee I knew this was the guitar. A word of advice though, shop many different places before you purchase a guitar and definitely check the internet. This same guitar was at Guitar Center for $960, and that did not include the case or sales tax. I found the same guitar over the internet for $794 out the door which included hard case and shipping. I basically saved close to $400.
