This is a 2008 guitar that was available used in Mint Condition. Included the Original Geib Case with Cabernet Lining. Top features that you would expect with a higher end Martin Guitar. Adirondack Spruce Top and Braces, Forward Shifted Standard X Scalloped Braces give this guitar the edge over other Martin Guitars that I own and have played. The modified V Neck just feels Great in my hand. The Fine Herringbone contrasts beautifully with the tight grained Aging Toner Adirondack Top. Both the Rosewood and Spruce are beautifully book matched. The guitar feels very balanced in my hands.

Sound : 10
Absolutely THE best sound of all Martin Guitars I own and have played. I play Classic Country Music. This guitar complements my Bass Voice and makes me want to sing better. The guitar was used and was advertised as having a "BIG FULL SOUND". Elderly Instruments does not place a Sound Description in their Used Instruments Listings unless there is something distintive about the sound. Take a look at their Used Martin Guitar Ads at Elderly.com. When I saw Elderly's description for this guitar I knew it must have something special and I bought it. I am extremely impressed with the BIG FULL SOUND of this guitar. I own a D-41, a D76, HD-28KM, D-18V and a Taylor 615. My wife has the absolute best ear for sound and after comparing each of the above guitars to my Martin D-28 Marguis; we both agree that the Marguis is the "Hands Down" BEST sounding of all. I have had the opportunity over the years to play vintage D-28's (with Brazillian Rosewood of course) and I love the sound of this guitar over any others that I've played. The sound is clear, full and big with a quality and balance that I have been wanting in a guitar. This guitar actually makes me sing better. I have found my "Dream Guitar". I can only look forward to this baby sounding better and better over time! Too bad that Harmony-Central Reviews don't have a 10+ Rating Scale. This guitar would get it!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Don't know how the action was on this guitar when it was new, but Elderly Instruments sent this consignment guitar to me with wonderful action. I'm not a high tech player with detailed spec requirements for height of string about X Fret, etc.; so I can't share details here; but I can tell you that there is absolutely nothing I would want to change in the action on this guitar. It's perfect to me. Also, the 1 3/4" Nut Width really feels comfortable to me. I have that in my HD-28KM and love it. As mentioned earlier, the neck fits great in my hand. This used guitar was in Mint Condition, so the finish is perfect. This guitar is a Martin, so it has the Finish quality that I have come to expect and respect in the Martin line. Another Great Success for CF Martin!

Reliability/Durability : 10
This guitar is a "Top of the Line" instrument! It will be there for me anytime I play it! It's built solidly but also commands my respect for the quality by caring for it with a Humidifier and a good quality HSC.

Customer Support : 10
I do not get the Martin Warranty for this guitar since I bought it used. However, I had a new Martin that I bought a few years ago on which the spruce top separated after 3 years of owning the guitar. I took it to the factory, met with the Repair Technician and he advised me that this "should not have happened" and that they would take care of it. They kept the guitar for about 6 weeks or so. When I returned to pick up the guitar it was absolutely perfect and I couldn't even tell there was any work done on it. Of course, the repairs were done with no charge since I was the original owner. I respect Martin so much that I bought this used D-28 Marquis without any warranty coverage. I've bought other used Martins (e.g. my D-41 and my HD-28KM) and have never had a problem. CF Martin is the greatest!

Overall Rating : No Opinion
Bottom Line .... Hands Down ...... this is the BEST guitar I have ever owned!!! I am so happy with this guitar!!! The SOUND is the Best! I have suffered from GAS (Guitar Acqusition Syndrome) for over 30 Years! I can give away my Prilosec! I'll most likely be selling many of my other guitars!

I FOUND MY DREAM GUITAR!!!

2005 D28 Marquis, Adi. top, Indian rosewood back and sides. You know the rest.

Sound : 10
To say this is the best guitar I have ever played is a understatment. I have two other High end guitars. A Santa Cruz and a Bouigous. They both are excellent instruments. But this Martin whips them both. I think its the Adirondack top. There is so much headroom!! I was playing with a great local banjo player last night. He has a nice late 30's gibson mastertone. This marquis D28 had no problems holding up. In fact it was overpowering the Mastertone. I can not wait until this guitar really opens up. It will be like stumming a hollow tree. Simply a fantastic guitar!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Every thing was great, action was a little high, but was a easy fix.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This guitar will last many more years than I will.

Never delt with martin

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing and teaching for many years. I bought this guitar because we all have G.A.S.. It just felt right the first time I picked it up. Any way Its a keeper. Martin is really building some great instruments. We a are in the second golden age of guitar building. Buy them when you can, pass them on to your childen. They will thank you some day. Peace

2005 Model D28 Marquis 14 fret to body Dreadnought. This model is part of Martin "Special Edition" series. Solid Adirondack spruce top, select hardwood modified V neck 1 3/4in at nut with a semigloss finish. Solid East Indian Rose Wood back and sides with gloss finish. Solid ebony bridge and fret board with old style markers. Forward shifted scallaped bracing. Fossilized Ivory nut, saddle and bridge pins and end pin. Gotoh nickel open back tunners. Very plain looking guitar but everything about it is top notch.

Sound : 10
Well balanced sound for a Dreadnought. The sound does not seem as tight as a D28,D35 but instead more of an open airy feel. The low end and midrange sounds are full and clear and warm.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The action was set just right. The neck is pretty thick but yet comfortable to play. The Adi front had very wide grain but the bookmatching was not perfect if I look at it at a certain angle.
The back and side rosewood is a deep dark brown shade. The back bookmarking is perfect.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This guitar is light for a DRED( much lighter than I remember a D28 being).
Even though it seems it would last a life time if taken care of properly. I own two other martins one for over 30yrs and they have held up fine. The gotoh tunners work and look great. I would use it on a gig without backup.

Customer Support : 10
I own a 0018 made and bought new in 1972. A few years back martin fixed the bridge (which was lifting up), fixed hairline cracks on spruce top due to pickguard for no cost. How can you beat that warranty. Work was done by CF Martin certified tech in my area.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for 35yrs now. I play Mostly country, blues and rock. I'll flat pick, finger pick and strum. I also own a Martin 00-18 and DC16RGTE. Both are great guitars but don't come close to this one.
I traded a Taylor 714CE and a Gibson J-185ce for this.
This is the best guitar that I've played to date.
If this were stolen I would buy another.

Brand New 2005 D-28 Marquis from the fine folks at CF Martin and Co.!I think i have been waiting for this guitar all my life! I was once designing a guitar in my head, wishful thinking though it was, and came up with much the same features that i eventually ended up seeing on the D-28GE. I could not afford to buy it though! But replace the Brazilian with choice East Indian Rosewood, and presto! And I can afford it! (Well, not without selling one or two other guitars, but what the heck, this is well worth it!!). The specs are on the Martin site, if you need a detailed description. The top is incredible! I have other high end Martin Dreadnoughts and whatnots, and the rosewood on this one seems deeper, wavier grain. The color is darker than chocolate. Anyway, it bee-ooo-teee-folll!!! What a manly neck too! This is not for the faint of hand, that's for sure! This BIG "V" neck is a man's neck, not a boy's neck!! I usually go for light to medium light strings, but i will keep the medium gauge on this one, the neck deserves medium strings! Tuners are also manly! I like the fossil bridge pins, saddle and nut and endpin. This guitar is what acoustic cannons should strive to be.

Sound : 10
This is what it's all about, isn't it? The sound is BIG, but balanced too! Highs are not lost in the boom, neither is the midrange. Every string rings true. And this guitar is brand new, what until it opens up in time!! WOW! I think Chris Martin has hit the mark! He is a true guitar hero!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I think Martin is making some of the best intruments they have ever made, and that is saying alot, considering their fine heritage. What craftsmanship and attention to detail. There are no flaws to be found! It's perfect!

Reliability/Durability : 10
Built for the long haul, but so light too!

Customer Support : 10
There when you need them. What more do you need?

Overall Rating : 10
Own lots of guitars. This is darn near the top of the list!

2005 D-28 Martin Marquis. Beautiful adirondak spruce with sunburst. May be the widest grain I have seen in a while. I love the fossil
nut, bridge pins and saddle. Who says they don't make a difference!
Great feel on neck, almost feels sanded. Sure helps with the speed.

Sound : 10
WOW! What can you say better than this. I have played a lot of
martins but this may be the most balanced instrument I have played
in a while. Booming bottom, monster mids and screeming highs. Would be suited for any kind of music especially bluegrass. But it is not
an instrument you play while the wife and kids are sleeping. It will
wake them up!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I have heard some people say the action was a little low but on
this particular instrument is was just right. You can flat pound
on it without getting a buzz. Even though the top isn't bookmatched
very well the sound well overcompensates for it. I was glad when Martin decided to do fossil nut, saddle and bridge pins on this instrument. It really does make the difference unless you are tone
deaf.

Reliability/Durability : 9
I am sure the guitar will hold up over time. I have spoken to several
luthiers and they all agree Martin is making some of the best guitars
ever.

Customer Support : 10
Martin seems to be a great company. I have spoken with them on
guitars in the past and they are very friendly and helpful.

2004 D-28 Marquis Sunburst!!!! Gorgeous Adirondack top in Sunburst finish. Fossilized ivory bridge pins, endpin, saddle and nut. Ebony fretboard and bridge. Fantastic rosewood back and sides. Herringbone trim. Satin finished V neck, to die for. Open back tuners, real heavy duty looking, great gear ratio and feel. Creme binding. Splendorifouris guitar, if that is not a word, it should be!!!! 1 3/4 width at the nut. Diamond fret markers. Great case with super handle! More clasps than you can shake a stick at!

Sound : 10
BE STILL MY BEATING HEART!!!! This is the best acoustic guitar i have ever played (and i have played some great guitars...)It has character! Tremendous bass response and gorgeous overtones, pronounced mids and sweet highs, what else do you want??? BIG sound.Martin put the money in the pursuit of sound for this one, not in ornamentation. You are paying for sound (and beauty) with this one!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Right out of the case, this guitar is ready to go. After a thorough inspection, I declare this monster more than ready, willing and able, and fit for duty! The action is perfect, all finish flawless. The finish on the neck is not gloss, which i am happy about, it is a satiny finish, and it feels perfect. The top is spectacular! Wide grain Adirondack! Quartersawn rosewood back is perfect. Sides are beautiful. The rosewood seems nicer than on my D-42, and that says alot, the D-42 is hard to beat in that dept. All joinery is spot on. The insides are meticulously finished and the SMELL!!! Better than new car smell!!

Reliability/Durability : 10
This is a very light weight guitar, and that is a very good thing!!! it is reliable and durable, but i don't think she will be going out on a date until she is 18, and even then i will chaperone, of course!!

Customer Support : 10
Great bunch of people, always helpful and courteous, as was Jon at My Favorite Guitars in Naples, Florida!

Overall Rating : 10
Been playing for a long time. Own a few other Martins: an early 000-28EC (before they fattened the neck and ruined it!!)a D-42 (sweet guitar), a CEO-4 (mahogany slope shoulder with ADI Top, great sleeper guitar in the MArtin lineup!!), J-40 Jumbo, (Martin Style!)00015S (cute little beat around guitar). The Marquis is the crown jewel of my humble Martin collection. What a fantasic instrument.

2004 D-28 Marquis dreadnought; solid Adirondack spruce top, solid EI Rosewood sides & Back; 1 3/4" nut width; Adi braces; Golden Era bracing pattern; "diamonds & squares" fretboard markers; fossilized walrus ivory nut, saddle, & bridge pins; modified "V" neck profile; herringbone purfling.

Sound : 10
The D-28 Marquis is, essentially, the D-28 Golden Era guitar with east Indian rosewood substituted for the scarce Brazilian rosewood. Since I can barely tell the difference in sound between them, this made the guitar more affordable to me. The sound is absolutely outstanding. It has the Adi/rosewood combined sound that I like so much with a little more "reserved" quality than the D-28 CW's "in your face" volume. I have found it is excellent for both fingerstyle and flatpicking. While it is full, rich and deep, it doesn't have tend toward muddiness like some of the sitka topped dreads can - lots of very clear sound from the bottom to the top of the neck. Highs don't thin out, but remain nice and fat. Great for bluegrass, but equally good for other acoustic modes as well - rock, folk, old timey, etc.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Setup was almost perfect. From the factory it was very low (actually a little too low, but 1/4 turn on the truss rod fixed that). There is one fret which is raised just enough to give an extra buzz when an open F is chorded. Otherwise, the build quality is extremely good. Finish is perfect, all joints are seamless and flawless. Quality of the Adi top is very, very nice. I'd give it a 10+ except for the one fret problem which I need to have a luthier tap down and secure for me.

Reliability/Durability : 10
The D-28 Marquis is built like a tank. I have no reason to think it would not hold up as well as its namesakes, the pre-war D-28's.

Customer Support : 10
I have dealt with Martin on another guitar and did a very good job of handling the problem and getting a repair made (and done well) by one of my locally appointed Martin luthiers. I have a lot of confidence in Martin's support, having tested it already.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for 40 years, but didn't get my first Martin until about 10 years ago, a 1973 D-35 that needed work. I sold it for an OM-42 last year, and have missed having the dread ever since. This D-28 Marquis is an outstanding instrument. It is very versatile as far as musical styles go. I'm very pleased with it. Between this one and the D-28CW, I don't think there is a finer example of the dreadnought guitar. If you like a 1 3/4" neck, and the vintage sound of a pre-war Martin, you will love this guitar.
