I've always believed mine was an 1982, and I still think so. It has electronics, but no knobs. I always thought the bowl to be a deep bowl, but models do change over the years. It has a spruce top and The top looks to be solid. The neck is a laminate of what looks to mostly be mahogany and some other lighter wood with fingerboard which I am certain is ebony. I mainly bought it to have an acoustic I can play around with. I'm definitely pleased. It's taken a lot of abuse, but it still sounds and plays wonderful.
Sound

I always heard not-so-grat comments on Ovations when it comes to their unplugged sound. That they are too small-sounding and bright. I changed my mind when I got my hands on this. I love how it sounds. It's a very full-sound, and like the other reviews say, it does have some midrange-y tones to it, which some all-wood acoustics lack. Sadly the electronics have such low output they're not worth even bothering with. But I never bought it for that. I bought it for playing acoustic. So it serves its purpose for me.
Action, Fit, & Finish

This guitar is 23 years old, give or take. The neck has seperated a little, the finish has some cracks around the bridge, binding is seperating. A good part of these flaws I mentioned are pretty common of Ovations over the years time does a number on them. I keep pretty lightweight acoustic strings on it, a .010-.050 set. The action is very nice, with a flat neck, that feels more like an electric guitar's neck than an acoustic's. It's still very playable, which is pretty impressive with all the wear it has. To be honest, I find the guitar very difficult to put down.

I'm sure this guitar has seen more than its share of live playing. The hardware has held up and so has the body. I like playing it and like keeping it around, so I don't think I'd play it out. All its components have held up for almost as long as I've been alive, so that's gotta be saying something. I'm not going to give an opinion, because someone else might say it's on the verge of being junk, while I'm pretty happy with it still.

I've been playing for about 10 years. I own a couple PRS electrics and a Rickenbacker and a Gibson and a Guild acoustic 12-string. I knew the guitar was pretty worn down when I bought it and it's serving its purpose as a beater guitar. However I like it so much I'm looking into buying myself another old, cheap USA Ovation from the same time period. I'd say that if you can get a USA-made guitar that plays this good in the $250-$300 range you got yourself a deal.

After all these years of owning my Ovation 1127 -4 the finish and action is perfect. Neck is stright; flat and strings stay in tune for months.

Repair was easy. Once in while living in San Francisco, United Airlines snaped the neck in a unpressed hold. Ovation fixed it to factory specs

This is one of the earliest Glen Campbell Artist series guitars.
Its not got any electrics and has a mid sized bowl. The guitar feels very comfortable to play and has a super sound.I emailed Ovation about this model and was told by them that its got a SOLID top.Very nice gold tuners and a well made guitar.

This is why every major recording and stage artist in the world at one time or another have used an Ovation. They sound AMAZING.Good punchy bass response and crystal clear highs. You can strumm it hard and chords still sound tight and punchy.Fingerpick it gently and the sound is clear as a bell. This one has no electrics,so I mike it up and it still has that super acoustic sound.I sometimes use a soundhole pickup too.I dont have any feedback problems as I can control the settings on the mixer myself. If you want sound to die for...this is the one!

Very well finished guitar with gold tuners and a super slim neck. This is the Glen Campbell model and Im sure he wouldent put his name to any rubbish guitar. All the braces are still intact and solid after all these years.String changing is a dream with no messing around with bridge pins and Ive neve had to have the action reset, but if I did,its an easy job,the finish has some checking, but not as bad as Ive seen on other vintage guitars and it gives it character.

This baby has been gigged many times with no problems whatsoever, thats why the ovations are so popular with gigging musicians.Ive been using it for years and the only other guitar I use is also an Ovation...its an Ultra from 1985 with a pickup and I seldom use it unless I break a string during a gig on the Artist.
Reliable? You bet!

I contacted them regarding the top and they were very nice, directing me to the archive section of their website. This guitar definitely has a SOLID top,but perhaps the later ones with a pickup had a laminated one. This is the original non electric model.Look out for the label....mine is a METAL label inside the guitar and is pretty rare. The later models Ive seen have a paper label

Been playing for over 25 years and have a number of what I call "quality" and "stage" guitars. This Ovation comes into both categories. Its a great stage guitar and is a quality instrument made in the good ole US of A and a classic in its own right. Its stood the test of time.Ive got a gibson J200 that Im scared to take out of the house anymore and Ive used a Martin D28 on recording and stage.Ive got 2 Ovations and both are US made vintage early 80s and these are the ones to find if your looking for a good sounding axe.The J200 and the Martin are fine if you stay at home or use in the studio.I just dont take them out anymore for fear of damage or theft. If this Ovation were stolen,I would hunt down the thief.Im currently looking for another one anyway but the non electric ones are hard to find.

This is a 1983 Glen Campbell with a "mid" bowl. It has the "one-knob" electrics with the tone and volume pots concentric (no notch filters in dem days) and it came with a seriously icky plastic case that says "Matrix" on it. I'm told this is original, though, so I better keep it. This is a 1983, bought new by the previous owner, I have the paperwork. It has gold non-locking tuners that work fine (and the gold, after 20 years, is still on there-- other makers please take note), an Ovation through-bridge, a very pretty five-piece neck. Ebony fingerboard, fancy diamond and dot inlay, well done. Medium frets. Not quite "C" neck, but not quite triangle either..hmm. Plays very nicely. Please note-- contrary to what the other reviewer says, this guit has a SOLID top. The way to check is to put a mirror into the soundhole so you can see the cut edge past the bizarre plastic rosette-- it's solid, no question. All in all a very nice guitar indeed.

Acoustically, bright and middley-- is this the "Ovation sound"? I like it. My wooden acoustics are much more top/bottom, with bright highs and powerful bass-- this is just not like that. I use it for fingerstyle, and it's excellent. It'll show up every fluff, though, not like a dreadnaught that'll hide it in the thundering bass-- but it is easier to play than most conventional acoustics, so you've no excuse. It's very sensitive to strings-- I've got Martin SP phosphor-bronze lights on just now and it sounds great, but I think there's more in there, so I'll experiment. Amplified is fine, with a more conventional "acoustic" sound-- I have not played out with it yet though, so I can't say how it holds up-- but I doubt if these guits would have been as popular if they sounded bad...... I'm scoring it on the acoustic sound though.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:7
Well, this is 20 years old-- the finish is perfect apart from the neck binding showing the early signs of cracking as the plasticisers leech out-- a common problem. Other than that, though, it's a credit to the makers. One big foopie is the hole in the top brace through which you're supposed to access the allen bolt on the truss rod is out of line (nice one) so you have to be a contortionist to adjust the rod. That knocks it down, but it's the only fault. The intonation is bang on for the gauge of string I'm using, and the action is excellent-- these bridges are shimmed to adjust the height, and I find two suits this example. It plays like a dream. It's an Ovation.
Reliability/Durability

See above on the finish, this is one well-made, tough guit-box. American stuff (forgive me guys) tends to be like that-- solid and reliable, sometimes slipping up on the details. It will certainly stand major abuse and many years of live playing. I would gig with it without backup.

I have played a long time and I have far too many guitars. This one I'll keep, but hell, I'll keep most of 'em...... Nothing I wish I'd asked, it looks great, it sounds particularly great, it plays just... You know, if you haven't tried a decent Ovation, and you're a bit more adventurous than CAGED strumming, you're missing out. There are better, there's no doubt, but you'll pay many times what one of these will rush you. They're a PITA to play sitting down at first, but after a while normal guitars seem weird..... I doubt if I'd ever have bought this, though I did fancy one when a certain Mr McLaughlin adopted them, but a while ago I bought an old Applause out of a pawnshop for a campfire guitar, put some decent strings on, tried it and went "Wow, if one of these sounds that good, what does a real one sound like?" I was not disappointed. I wish it had a nicer case.

The guitar was made in U.S.A in about 1975, i think. It has 20 frets and a laminated top. There is no pickups or electronics on it (100% original!).
I am not sure what kind of wood that is used in the laminated top, but the body uses Ovation's patented lyrachord plastic. The neck woods are ebony, i think.
It has a natural finish (mine has a lot of dents and scrapes from over 25 years of gigging). The body is a semi-deep bowlback.
Tuners are produced by Ovation, and the neck is pretty thin.
The guitar came with a flight case.

Here is where this guitar ROCKS!!! This baby sings with a golden voice! If you want a guitar with a deep, full sound with a lot of bottom end, this isn't your guitar. But if you want a bright, clear sound so wonderful it's intoxicating, Ovation is the way to go. This guitar is perfect for all kinds of music where you'd normally consider an acoustic in the first plays. My dad, which I inhereted it from, played it for jazz. I play mostly pop/rock and folk, but I've used it for a lot of different purposes. It's great!

The guitar's set-up and action has been flawless for the last five years. Only the last year i have had some problems with intonation. Had the neck straightened a couple of times. The finish is, as mentioned before, dented -- but that is 25 years of playing speaking.
Reliability/Durability

First of all: This guitar is 27 years old, it's been played hard all of the time, and it's been in a car accident (nasty one at that).
That, dear friends is proof for you. Can't beat experience.
This thing is built to last. Over 27 years there have been no need to repair it(with exception of the neck straightening).
Can it withstand live playing? Har har har! Is Santa Claus fat?
The hardware is still going strong after one quarter of a century, the same goes for the strap buttons. The finish is strong too - it's not really wearing off, it's only been dented by clumsy guitarists. =)
I would most definitely say i can depend on this guitar. And yes, i'd use it without a backup. It is rock solid and i have no problems with it.

I've been playing for 3-4 years, and i also play a Epiphone LP plugged into a Peavey Combo. This is my only acoustic though.
If this guitar was stolen, i would go berzerk and try kill as many people i could get my hands on before Special Forces takes me out.
Only kidding folks, but i'd really get mad. This guitar's been out of production a *long* time, and the chance of finding another is minimal!!
I wish this guitar had pickups and eq. But I am *not* fiddling with an original like this!!
I love everything about this guitar. But especially the tone (it's enchanting) and the sturdiness and reliability.
If there's anything I don't like about it, it has to be the fact that it's getting old, and has to be adjusted at a regular basis to keep intonation intact.
