Seagull S6 Cedar Acoustic

Cedar top, rosewood back and sides. No frills!!

I'm a professional session guitarist and I played this guitar on "Lighthouse Family" Ocean Drive album. You can hear it all on its own on the title track, and all the other acoustic guitar tracks on that album. It records beautifully and I love it to bits. Depending where you stick the microphone, you can get just about any sound, middly behind the bridge, boomy over the hole and toppy over the fingerboard, a combination of the 3 mics is huge!!

Set up pretty well from the factory but I had it tweaked by my guitar fellah. It came with a cool little booklet that advised you to stand it in front of your hi fi speaker when you're not playing it so that sound was always hitting the top, this helps to mature the sound more quickly.

The soft Cedar top is starting to go a bit Willy Nelson on me but the sound gets better and better with age. The neck and frets are great, rock solid.

Never had to deal with them but I've heard they're wonderful.

I've been playing 35 years, I've owned most brands including some very nice acoustics but this is the one that I always turn to. If it were nicked, I'd get another one immediately

Laminated cherry back & sides, cedar top, bigleaf maple top, rosewood fretboard.

This is my "go to" guitar which sits out on its stand for daily practice, while my high-dollar acoustics rest in their cases. It has a full, round sound, typical of a cedar topped guitar. I play both country/bluegrass flat picking, and Travis style finger picking, and the Seagull never disappoints. Its not as loud as my spruce topped acoustics, but can usually hold its own in mixed company.

The guitar was fairly well set up from the factory, although I think this issue is given way too much importance. It's like buying a new car and complaining that the seat isn't adjusted properly to your body size. Take a new guitar to a tech and tell him how you want it set up for your playing style.

On the other hand, the fretwork and feel of the neck was superb, nicer than some of my high dollar acoustic guitars.

As with all cedar top guitars, the top is very soft and susceptible to scratches and dings. Mine is no exception. Its "battle scars" in no way compromise its sound, and for me, the sound is the MOST important quality of an acoustic guitar, way ahead of cosmetics and bling.

The tuning machines have been reliable, the bridge has remained solidly attached to the top, everything has held up perfectly.

I've not had need for customer support, so I cannot address this.

I have been playing for over 57 years. Own Martin, Taylor, Breedlove, Larrivee, and a custom built acoustics, have a Fender "Partscaster" that I built, as well as an Alvarez solid body electric bass. Love 'em all, but the Seagull gets daily use at home.

The case was extra for this guitar, and it's a cheapo "hard shell", although it's no where near the quality of my Taylor's case.

I have a K&K Pure Western soundboard pickup in it, and it sounds very good through my UltraSound acoustic amp. As with many soundboard pickups, it tends to feed back at high sound levels, but the tone is "just like my guitar, only louder".

After I got it home, I learned from the serial number that it was a factory second, due to a slight cosmetic flaw on the heel. Nonetheless, it was the best sounding Seagull in the store, as well as the least expensive. No complaints whatsoever.

This guitar is a no-frills, utilitarian instrument. That's not to say you can't find some beauty in it's spartan exterior. The finish is a flat satin with a rosewood fingerboard. The sound is amplified by beautiful, simply-finished domestic wild cherry on the sides.

I purchased the dreadnought body style manufactured in 2008-- which might be a little unwieldy for a beginner. A nice feature, I thought, was the assembly card where each installer signed off on their work. I've bought much more expensive guitars and I've never seen that.

Bottom line is, you've seen prettier guitars. But the S6 gives you everything you need and none of gimmicky junk thrown on other guitars that jacks up the price.

The sound is absolutely unreal. It actually spoiled me a little. This was my first acoustic guitar after owning a laundry list of electrics. The S6 is a wonderful little secret. People thinking they need to spend $800 on a guitar that sounds this marvelous make me laugh. It's amazing what you get for your $400 with Seagull.

I played it and fell in love with the warmth and the projection. Months later, I picked up a friend's Taylor 210ce at a party and I was shocked how puny the sound coming from it was. The S6 had me spoiled. It's a pity to think he spent $500 more than me for a guitar mine can smoke.

The low end is warm and rich and can play right to the edge of being muddy-- the high end is bright and poppy. Really, I don't know what else to say. You really have to get one in your hands, take it through the scales and pace through a song.

The action was a little high and stiff on the guitar with the factory set up. I had the saddles refitted and it cleared that right up. Again, though, I was used to playing electric guitars with, of course, much less action.

Everything else was flawless. Finish was smooth. Hardware was all top-notch.

I truck this guitar around quite a bit-- all in a soft case-- and I haven't had any finish issues.

The tolerance to humidity seems fairly impressive. Living in Houston can wreak havoc on the tuning of some guitars-- especially hauling them in and out doors. Aside from slight adjustments, the S6 firmly holds it's tuning.

The finish has a larger capacity for abuse than a high-gloss solid-top. I have a couple of small gouges on the back-- but that's to be expected.

Really, I don't know where else you're going to find a solid-top guitar that sounds like this for $400 brand new. Not to sound jingoistic, but the fact that it was made in Canada rather than Mexico, China or Taiwan is another perk.

The sound is easily comparable with mid-level Martins and Taylors and absolutely annihilates Yamahas and Epiphones.

The price point is right in-between what you'd typically spend on an entry level acoustic and a mid-level acoustic. If you're a beginner, spend the extra $100-150 and spring for the quality instrument.

If you're a mid-level player, you really can't go wrong with this either. You can spend the money and get the name recognition of something like a Taylor or a Martin-- but put a Seagull in your hands first. Her looks won't blow your hair back-- but listen to her sing!

Bought this guitar in 1997(?) and paid about $300 with a hardshell case. Cherry side and back, cedar top, no electronics, 1 strap button, 3+3 headstock.

I purchased this guitar to tool around with at home. Not for gigs or any other situation. The sound was full and it could take the dynamic strumming I gave it without sounding awful. I was astounded how great it sounded compared to so many other models and prices. To this day it gets complements.

It's not a $5000 guitar. One of the braces was cracked inside (me with glue and a clamping system got that fixed). The lack of any pickguard or finish on the front probably means more for tone, but if you use a pick, you will eat through your guitar quickly. A fellow musician, David Poe, played one on tour. His comment was "sounds awesome, will probably die quickly". I saw him with a guitar at a 6 month interval. It was new at month 1, it looked like Willie Nelson's at month 6. Action is a bit high, but I like it like that. Intonation is better than most guitars at this price range, but not stellar.

I've mentioned the wearing thin aspect if you're a pick player, but I will say this. The guitar has lived in Texas, Colorado, Illinois and travelled throughout the U.S. It has YET to have required a truss rod adjustment. I do nothing more than keep it in it's faux-fur lined case.

I've only written Godin once about anything. They answered within a week. Not bad. Still haven't heard from Line6 even once (sent about 20 e-mails). Of the two, they're not bad.

I've been playing for 24 years now. I have had PRS, Fender, Ibanez, Laney, Line6, and am about to switch to my first Mesa Boogie (yea!!) I love the sound of this guitar, I wish I had spent a little more and gotten one with electronics. I didn't know I would enjoy playing acoustic this much. I'm looking at another Seagull (Artist, Redwood/Spruce, i-beam) as my next acoustic purchase. That should say plenty.

Don't want to boast, but I play well enough to own a Martin or Taylor. I just can't swing it financially. I was getting very tired of the Yamaha 12-string (can you say Supertramp?), and took a chance on an S6 online. I concur with what many others say - the tone value is astounding, but there is a limit. Individual strings are clear and fine, but chords can be a little muddy. I find myself finger-picking more and more, and this is from a die-hard rythym player.

Got a factory second from Canada, and the flaws are cosmetic and minor. If its built like a $300 but sounds like a $2K, I can live with that. I find the action to be very good, intonation not so great. Perhaps I should visit a luthier.

The top is well-known for its delicate constitution. I don't play out much anymore, and when I do, I try to be extra careful. This guitar is no tank.

Being a second, I got no warranty. Buying through ebay, I got no vendor support. If you don't have the constitution for this, buy from a dealer, if there's one around.

Been playing for 35 years. Have the Yamaha FG-230 and a Gibson SG-250. I would buy another of these. It was too big for my daughter's hands, had to go with the Baby Taylor for her. While its an excellent beginner guitar, I highly recommend it for the budget conscious better player as well.

I own an S6 Cedar, serial # 98184409. I purchased it about around 1999 or so. It is without a doubt my mistress, a trusted and worthy companion for life.

She loves new medium strings, but has been trusted to get me through many sessions with worn dull stings. I used lights on her for a few years until she graduated to a slide guitar vs. a lead acoustic.
The heavier the string the better on this honey.

Perfect action but the main reason for our bond is that wonderful wide neck. The wider the better as far as I'm concerned! I've worn a hole on the bottom front of the pick guard and due to the heat in some of the countries I've taken her to.

The pick guard as recessed a bit towards the arrow inlay. She scratches easily and has quite a few dings; all of this gives it its BLUES character. The neck became loose two years ago but with the help of my friends in Lakehurst it was fixed immediately.

I wish I bought 3 of them, one set up for slide, one for lead and one for rythm. Will only buy from Seagull.

i am so glad i added this to my collection!!!canadian gee-tar,this axe has a solid cedar top, which makes for interesting tone and great smells coming from the case where i keep it. the sides are cherry (or "wild" cherry as the seagull site says) and the neck is made from maple. the finish is the only thing that threw me a little...this guitar is naked. i like it though after plaing it for a little while...it's different, reminds me of one of those unfinished martins they have now (you know..the martins that are in most people's price range) and i guess that is probably the reason this guitar is cheap. (i got mine for $200 used, with a hard case)the body is dreadnought, the tuners are closed and they are seagull brand. gotta give it a seven because it's pretty bare...but depending on what you're looking for that may be a good thing.

sorry..i have to agree with everyone here...this guitar sounds awesome...tons of tone...bight and full highs, rich and full bass...this thing sounds just as good as my buddy's martin and he spent $2k on that thing (heehee).i do not have electronics on it currently but i may spring for one of those bridge pins...no preamp though i don't want to cut this wood.

the action was a little higher than i like it but i have not changed it and i'm starting to get used to it. the only flaw i can see is there is a small smudge of glue on the neck near the nut, i think it was probably done by the first owner because it seems to be a little too careless from the factory (i hope) oh well..i paid $200 for the thing and it sounds incredible so i'm not gonna bitch too much. also, the bottom of the cedar top had blackened a little on one end, i read somwhere that this will happen to unfinished wood, and that the culprit is sap coming out of the wood....i think it looks kinda cool.

this guitar will withstand live performance playing if you are good to it. i read one review where the used said the bottom of his soundhole chipped from normal playing...bullcrap...this is a guitar, it's made out of wood. play it the right way and be good to it and there will be no chipping of the soundhole...the idiot who wrote that needs to employ the use of a stress ball. i'm gonna give this section an 8 because there is a general lack of finish compared to other guitars, but if you are good to this instrument it will hold up for years and years

the main thing that i like about this guitar is that i paid $200 for it (used) and it sounds incredible. the tone onthis guitar is really top-notch. i've been playing for about 10 years and I currently own a washburn acoustic, an old guild acoustic, a les paul studio, and this (and a rainsong is on the way once i save up some dough) i like tone and this guitar has it. if you can find one used for short cash like i did BUY IT. you will not be disappointed.

My guitar center didn't have Seeagulls and the store that did was a bit of a drive but I wanted to go and at least demo one and maybe get one on line. So I pulled into the store and the manager pointed me to the S-6 which is the chepaest of their line and pulled one down and said, "Play this, I just got done setting it up."

I immediately liked the sound and tone but am really bad at remembering what anything else sounded like the day before so I was impressed but still absorbing the sound and yet it was growing on me.

I hung out for about half and hour playing different guitars and kept coming back to the one the manager handed me. They sold Takamine as their main brand and after just hanging out for a while I picked up a similarly priced ($300.00) Takamine and still trying to learn the sounds of guitar I strummed a simple D chord and thought hmmmm that sounds different but couldn't put a term to it, it just sounded different.

So I grabbed the Takamine and handed the SeaGull to the manager and strummed that D chord, then strummed a D chord on the SeaGull and we kinda looked each other in amazement. The difference was more than night and day. The SeaGull was a completey different instrument. I looked at him and said, "I'll take it." Never looked back.

I have tried John Pearce strings (really didn't like them) Elixirs, both lights and mediums (they were nice but a little brittle with the lights, and dead with the meduims) But the thing that has caused me to write this review are the Martin phospher bronze lights that have been on for about 2 days. Just changed the whole character of the guitar. Very Taylorish in the bright sparkle but more balanced than most Taylors to my ear. Not better than every Taylor because there have been a few Taylors I've played that are in a different universe that the Seagull in tone but most of them are not as nice sounding to my ear.

One thing that is very different between the SeaGulls and Taylor/Martins etc. is the way the s Seagull does NOT hold together during hard strumming. It feels like a lightly built guitar and sounds like one as well. Perfect for the soft playing I do in front of the TV but I don't know about heavy strumming. It is getting better and better though and the Martin strings have helped a lot. It may sound as nice as many Taylors but is NOT a Taylor and the feel of a $2500.00 guitar is very different than the Seagull.

So sound wise I'll give it a well deserved 9 but it is a not a magical Taylor or Martin.

Standard s6 Cedar top acoustic. I bought mine at a pawn shop used.
It came with a good padded gig bag. Nice solid Cedar top, excellent fretboard, guitar has a good feel to it. Really nice tunner too.

Very good ballence of bright to mellow.
Tone is more dependant on your style of atack, if you use a pick or your a finger style player. I use a DiMarzio sound hole pick up in mine so I can plug it into any amp. Play it though my PA system.

Had a few scratches on it when I bought it, but it sounded so good it was worth it. The frets are well dressed, feel of the neck is excellent, and the action is good.

I've had it now for about five years and many of my friends have played it. Everyone seems to like it, even guys who own 1000 dollar acoustics say it sounds and feels good to them.

Who knows, I've had no need. I just change the strings and the action stays solid.

For me this was a great value. AT this low price with gig bag it sound great, plays well, stays in tune, looks good, and seems to make everyone a hand it to happy. I thnik it's a guitar which is worth $400. new I just got a great deal on a used one.
I've been playing for over 20 years but I'm mostly a Bass player.
With the DiMarzo pick up I plug this into the mixer and a EV7100 power amp, then play it through two EV SX100 speakers. Sounds Great through my system, very clean.

Made in canada..1997 was year of manufacture...solid top cedar...cherry neck....rosewood board and bride. unsure of back/sides....satin finish..

i'm a strummer and find this guitar's full sound very pleasing to the ear. it resonates very well...natural harmonics have a really neat tone....great sound is this guitars strong suit, particulary for a $300 guitar.

Action is excellent. It's a pleasure to play, and many people who've played it commented on how good a player it is. I've never had to adjust it. I've been using gauge 13 strings throughout my ownership of this guitar, if that means anyting to anyone.

I've noticed no structual problems.

Only complaint about this guitar is the finish--very, very thin, and there are marks all over it (i've dropped it and had it get knocked over countless times)...also, edge of the sound hole is very, very worn from the pick...i've switched from medium to a thin pick, and the wear rate has decreased a great deal.

Once again, the finish is the only problem in this category.

hardware is still in fine shape, i can depend on this guitar to stay in tune through hours of playing.

(note on tuning--on temperature changes, the tuning changes noticably--all strings become equally sharp or flat)

i'd use it without a backup..

never had an issue where i needed to contact customer support

I've been playing for 7 years...i also own a yamaha acoustic which was a gift...barely been touched since i got the seagull. if my S6 were ever lost, i would replace it with a Seagull model which has electronics included. that is my only regret about this guitar...i wish i had bought one that had electronics.

On the whole, i've been very pleased with this guitar. it's great sound and ease of play makes up for it's poor finish. of course, there are better guitars out there, but, i feel you'll get the most for you money with a seagull.

Cedar top, light colored wild cherry laminate back & sides, sealed tuners, hardshell case. Rosewood fretboard w/dot inlays & Mahogany neck.

Big, warm tone. This is why I purchased this instrument. Much louder than similarly priced asian guitars. G-string buzz developed early and is a recurring headache.

VERY thin finish, lots of pick marks on the top early. They claim this helps the sound, but looking at glossy finished Martins I think this is hype, but probably helps keep costs down. Other problems is a recurring G string buzz. Took it back to the shop and they pointed out a defect in the bridge. The fix was superglue on the bridge to cover the blem and a shim under the bridge. Both solutions unacceptaable. Won't go back to them again. Action now stinks. Looks pretty though.

As above, thin finish and bridge problems. Maybe a Monday AM/Friday PM guitar. The ones on the rack sounded fine. Overall a beefy instrument aside from the finish.

They don't answer email and the shop told me it helps to speak french if you have to call. Have to send it back to Canada to get it fixed or shell out money for a local luthier. Buyer beware.

Good cheap guitar if you are lucky enough to pick out one without problems. Sounds much better than anything in the under $400 price range. Customer support stinks. Don't mind the top wear if tone is important to you. Unique coloring of cherry laminate (gold tone) and satin finish a plus to me. This is currently my only acoustic. Used to have a 1983 Fender F-210 that sounded very similar. Own Epiphone Dot (335) Fender Jazz bass, and Squire Tele (for custom electronic projects mostly). Desire to get Gibson 45, or a Taylor once a sack of money falls in my lap. For now just need to get my bridge replaced.

I have been through quite a few guitars: ibanez performance, blueridge, fender and washburn.

I play rock, and blues rock. This guitar has a warm tone and very clear sound. I was actually looking for a spruce top, but the tone and sound of this one completely took me over.

I bought this guitar from someone, so i don't know what the factory setup is like. The Tuners are awesome. Cedar top is fragile, you have to be careful with it.

I have dropped this guitar quitea few times, but it plays fine. I like in Bangladesh, were humidity is killing. SOmehow this guitar has survived the humidity.

I don't gig, so i don't know what it would be like. This guitar has been priced for beginners, but it offers much more than that. If i ever gig, i'll probably use this as a backup.

Best value for a beginner. As I said earlier priced for beginner but performance of $700 guitar. I beleive seagull is not very popular, but the quality speaks for itself.

If I lose this guitar, i'll probably buy a Seagull M6. If you are looking for an Acoustic guitar, Canadian guitars are the best. Some other canadian guitar brands are Norman, Art & Luither and Garrison.

Bought this Seagull last year. It's the S6 Cedar top acoustic model.
Had it shipped from Toronto. It included a Space Age case.

I played a whole bunch of guitars before buying this one. This Seagull S6 Cedar top sounds amazing for the money! Easily blows
away other brands upward to 800 bucks.

The finish is simple, but it's nice. The bridge, nut, neck, etc. everything is crafted well. Couldn't find any sloppy workmanship at all. As one other person mentioned, I noticed the G string goes out of tune easily but it's not a huge problem. The action was a bit high for my tastes from the factory. I adjusted the neck and sanded down the saddle a bit, replaced the strings with Elixir Lights and now I love the way it plays.

I take this guitar everywhere and I haven't seen a mark appear on it. I don't bang it off walls either though, I just play it.
I'm confident that it has a well built feel and that it will last.

I've been playing off and on for 20 years. I own an Ovation Celebrity Deluxe CS257, A Yahama FG331, and a 70's Hofner Classical. As I said, I played alot of acoustics and this one couldn't be beat for the price vs. sound. period. Favorite feature would have to be the sound quality. It's deep and full and compares to other brand acoustic guitars costing three times as much. I don't think there's anything I dislike about this guitar. Bottom line, if you're looking for a well built, good quality, superb sounding acoustic guitar for not alot of green then this is your baby.

Been playing for 3 years now, this guitar is so value for money its unbelavable, the tone is up there with the Martins of this world.

Dont pass one by their great acoustic guitars ,any one who bad mouths these guitars doesnt know good tone or they were unluky and got a one off reject !

Seagull S6 is a 14-fret dreadnaught. The top is satin-finished, solid cedar, and the back and sides are a 3-layer laminate of (I think) mahogany sandwiched between cherry wood. The neck and headstock are stained maple with a satin finish, and the bridge and fingerboard are rosewood. Tuners are chrome but very small. Nut is 1 7/8" wide. The guitar came with one strap pin, and I added one to the heel of the neck. This model has no electronics. In general, the guitar is very plain looking.

This is where this guitar shines! For the money, you cannot buy a better sounding guitar, period. While I won't say it sounds better than a Martin, it can hold it's own against my grandpa's D-35. My dad has a $400 Ovation and this guitar absolutely blows that one away. Since the cedar is so soft, it already has opened up significantly in less than 6 months. All the strings are nicely balanced. Trebles are nice and bright, while basses are big and boomy. I play both fingerstyle and flatpick, and this guitar can handle both.

Action is medium to medium-low. This guitar is extremely easy to play. The satin finished neck is oh so smooth under the hand. The thing always stays in tune. Construction is solid and no-nonsense. This is a quality instrument with few frills.

This guitar is well-built and fairly durable, but the cedar top is extremely soft. You can scratch it by breathing on it! Well, that's an exaggeration, but you can scratch it with a soft fingernail. The cherry sides and back are extremely hard, and I can't imagine them scratching very easily.

Despite the fact that the top is so soft, I really can't complain. I don't feel terribly bad about dinging a $200 guitar. I didn't buy it for the looks. Everything else about the guitar is great. Joints and seams are top-notch.

I play this guitar in church, but I don't beat on it too hard. I don't know if it would be a great gigging guitar, but I'm no professional musician.

Never needed. This guitar comes new with a two-year warranty, but I bought mine used.

I've been playing off and on (mostly off) for 25 years. I gave up guitar for a long time. This guitar thankfully brought me back! This is the only guitar I own right now. If this guitar was stolen, I'd probably get another, or I might look at a Tacoma gloss finish model (DM-18 or DR-20). For the price, this guitar cannot be matched. The main reason I bought the Seagull was because it was the best guitar I could afford right away, and I really needed one right away!

I suppose I'd like a gloss top, but that would probably have put it out of my price range. I'd recommend Seagull for anyone looking for a great guitar at a great price. Beginners should look no further than this model or the S6 spruce. Anyone else looking for a beater that they don't mind getting scratched up should consider the S6.

My rating is without regard to price. If there was an Overall Rating that took price into consideration, this guitar would be a solid 10.

Made in Canada in 2002, with a solid, cedar top and
wild cherry back and sides. Maple neck with Seagull's rather nice, shaped headstock. Matt-satin finish to this dreadnought acoustic. The electronics are a L R Baggs RibbonTransducer with 3 band graphics sliders
and 2 tone/anti-feedback knobs.

As you'd expect from a cedar top, this guitar sounds
warm. It has a nice smooth bass end, well defined
middle and a clean treble response, although there
is no real sparkle at the top end it's fine for the
body shape and woods used.
Amped up there's nothing special going on but
there rarely is with most on-board pickups. So pretty good really, if you like that sort of thing.
Acoustically I found the guitar gave back what I
put in. It doesn't flatter dull playing but rewards
good playing with a warm, well defined, expressive
sound.

The guitar came very well set up. No rattles or
buzzes, good action and fantastic intonation. I have found no flaws with this guitar as far as set-up and
finish are concerned. Remarkable quality for the price.

The guitar is pretty light but has proved remarkably
sturdy. The matt-satin finish doesn't seem to mark
easily or tarnish.
The machineheads are very smooth and accurate
too. The electronics have given no difficulties as yet.

I've been playing for 31 years. I started young.
I love the response the guitar gives you and the overall tone.
There's nothing to hate, the guitar is a little bland in
appearance but it grows on you.
I tried a lot of guitars in the shop, when I bought this one. It came down to the Seagull and a Garrison.The Seagull won on slightly better overall tone and
it's top set-up and intonation.

Sounds pretty good. I don't have those booming lows everyone is talking about. Overall seems on the bright side. Since the factory does not recommend medium gauge strings I've had to switch to a heavy gauge pick to get an appreciable level of bass, but it could just be me. My dad has an old Yamama F340 that i think sounds must more bassey. The Sound definitely breaks up under heavy strumming and i get alot more buzzing than i should be getting. The only good part about that is i have to work on hitting the frets perfectly. But I will say it does sound great fingerstyle and light strumming.

Action was fine from the factory. I took it to my favorite shop and the owner said i didn't need to do anything. The finish is satin and light, but personally, i like it better than the gloss. It will and has scratched but who cares. Everything else was ready to go, right out of the case

Haven't broken any strings after some heavy playing with a heavy gauge pick. I'm sure i will eventually, but that probably doesn't have anything to do with the guitar. The finish is satin and the cedar will scratch more easily than other spruce but that doesn't bother me. The tuners are 15:1 and work real well, it takes about a day to get into tune after new strings are on and i wont have to touch it again until its time to change strings. Overall i feel like its hade pretty well

Haven't been playing very long about 2 years but i grew up in a musical family. My dad who has been playing for 30 years really likes it, but i think his sounds better. A good buy with good quality, the buzzing bothers me, but thats about it. I would check out the bottom line, solid top, washburns (D10S), and Alvarez's first. But i'm happy with guitar and i'll probably keep it as a beater when i step up

Made in 1998 in Canada. Solid Cedar Top. Cherry back and sides. Tuners are ok. I am starting to have trouble with one going out of tune a lot though. The finish is very little satin. The guitar is also very light, because of the use of thin wood. So Like most cheaper guitars, it is not conditioned to enviromental changes. For example, the neck will move when it gets cold. In standard tuning, I have pulled it out of the case with it tuned up a half step. The neck moved! The ivory bridge piece is glued in! Why I don't know!

I love the warm sound from this guitar. If you want a bright sound from an acoustic then this is NOT it. If you want to be a one-man band and get that bass thump from your acoustic this is diffently a good start. However, I am concerned about the fret buzz. I have taken to an authorized dealer to get fixed but he couldn't do it. But then again, I think he set it up for fingerpicking and not that pissed off Neil Young sound. I think the fret buzz could be a lot less.

Like I said before I am getting buzz when I strum chords. I think the problem lies in the fact that the damn neck moves so much when it isn't play. If I got rid of the buzz I would be in love with this guitar. Another reason for the buzz might be that the fret bars have wore down very easily. Cheap guitar syndrom again!

How can a guitar that sounds so damn good have such poor quality? I am also getting another characteristic of "cheap guitar syndrom" that I like to call "G String Snap". On most cheaply made guitars this is always the string that snaps first. Mostly because the G string in standard tuning is the highest tension string but also because the bridge and the nut have not been properly set and filed. I have contacted SEAGULL about all my problems and they have informed me to take it an authorized dealer. Ummmm, OK. I have already put $100 in getting the nut, bridge, and neck filed why would I spend another $100 or more on a $400 guitar? I may take it in just to see what they can do for free. If I bitch enough that is. :)

The warranty for SEAGULL guitars is 2 years. The only way you can contact their customer support is e-mail. They will write you back but your hair might turn white by then.

With all the problems I have had with this guitar I still love it. It's a love hate relationship. If it were stolen or lost I would be really be pissed. But I would diffently look around at other guitars. In the little town where they make SEAGULLs there is like 10 other differnt brands. Maybe one is better. If anyone has any suggestions on what I can do then please feel free to write me.

Great sound. missing a little of the high end. like it better than most $1k martins & gibsons i play (too dark). not as much as most $1k taylors. Acoustic, I play alot of dave matthews, folk, irish. mostly fingerstyle.

This thing's action has always been a little high, but it sounds so nice I'm afraid to mess with it. Tuners are still great after all these years. great bookmatch, top & bottom.

hmm, lets see. I've been playing this thing regularly since 1991. haven't had any problems with it, leave it in the car & out of the case alot, plus a lot of houston heat & humidity. - so i'd say it's pretty durable. I don't play it on stage much b/c its' not acoustic/electric & I'm scared of drilling holes in it. The top that everyone worries about has aged nicely, has so little finish on it that sap actually comes out of it. It has a great grain to the wood that disguises the nicks- lots of character.

I've been playing for about 15 years. I got the Seagull as a gift in college 10 years ago. It's been seriously abused in that time, but it sounds better every time I pick it up. I attribute alot of that to the light, clear finish on the top. If it were stolen, I might finally grab a higher-end A/E guitar (Taylor, Breedlove, Santa Cruz) w/ a cutout. I hate spending big money on things that might turn out not to be perfect, though & can't justify 5 almost really nice guitars, so I have a number of lower end guitars- epi chet atkins, epi sg bully, kramer strat copy, etc. w/ a behringer v-amp that makes them all sound nice. For my beginning friends, I am recommending these small Art & Lutherie Amis- made by the same company- they sound great for about $150.

Solid Cedar top, laminated Wild Cherry sides and back. Both the top and back are bound in a dark chocolate binding. Bolt on Mahogany neck,
rosewood fingerboard and bridge.Hand-rubbed lacquer finish. Otherwise all the standard S6 features are the same , I won't bother to list them all here.By serial # this guitar was made in 1991.

The sound is very open and full across the range, typical of the cedar. The highs are bright without sounding tinny and the low end is very warm. The guitar has nice volume as well.I enjoy a folk style of play , I don't do much finger picking but I do a fair amount of lead.
You can play this guitar for hours at a time and not get tired.

I bought this guitar at a pawn shop in Ottawa, Canada. When I first saw it the neck was loose so I really passed it up initially. I found out that Seagull uses a "dry" fit on the neck for sound and strength. No glue is used to attach the neck to the body it's bolted from the inside. The bolt on neck is not visible from the outside of the guitar and it was a simple matter to tighten it through the soundhole. The exchange rate for the US dollar brought my cost down to $110.00 US. The guitar was in great shape overall and as noted by others it had a fair amount of "pick scratches" in the area below and behind the pickguard from over strumming.This is an earlier S6 as evidenced by the top and back being bound as well as the Mahogany neck. The latest models have a maple neck. I'm sure those features were dropped in the current model as a cost cutting measure, so I feel fortunate to have found an early model.Two problems occurred right away, the saddle on the early models were not compensated so the intonation is a little off. I also have noticed that one corner of the bridge has lifted, most likely due to improper storage and humidity. I'll need to get that repaired and I plan to replace the saddle with a compensated model. The guitar is very well constructed and is fairly plain.

The guitar is very solid, well constucted with the minor drawback of a soft top that will most likely show more wear and need a little more TLC than usual.

I e-mailed the support staff at Seagull and got very fast and knowledgeable replies to all my questions. My advice is to find a good local dealer you trust as Seagull does not accept direct dealings for repairs, it has to go through an authorized dealer first.

I have some nice guitars so I'm not overwhelmed by the S6 but as many people have noted it's an incredible value in a semi-hand made guitar.
I say semi-hand made because Seagull uses a lot of mass produced parts and concentrates on the important things like a solid top and skilled construction techniques for the critical stuff. Before they started making their own guitars they made a lot of parts for major guitar manufacturers. Chances are if you've had a big name brand axe then it has their parts in it somewhere. It plays really nicely and sounds awesome. Since I paid so little for it I'm not worried about babying it , but you do need to be careful with a cedar top guitar and a lacquer finish.

Bought my dreadnought in 2001, solid cedar top (sounds very warm and full), satin finish, laminated back and sides. The tuners are very sensitive, and don't need a lot of fiddling. In fact, I don't have to tune it very often, because it stays pretty much on pitch a lot. It came with a hardshell case and the dealer threw in a humidifier and picks and it all came to about $385.

This is an incredible-sounding guitar for any price, I can't stress that enough. My boyfriend owns a $1400+ Taylor and couldn't believe it. If you like a lot of bass, look no further. Needs a little more hard plucking to get an effective tone on the higher notes, but otherwise, it has a full, rich, warm sound that can fill a large room. It's the kind of guitar that makes you sound better than you actually are!

My guitar is very, very plain-looking, which is kind of the way I like it. I was more after the sound than the way it looked, so it suits me just fine. The action is low EXCEPT on the fifth and sixth string of the first fret, but I'm looking to have that fixed pretty soon. I was pretty much a beginner when I first bought this guitar, and I was surprised at how easy it was to play even with my uncallused fingers. No flaws that I could see; the finish was excellent, and it smells sooooo good when you take it out of the case.

Give me a little bit more time; for now, it looks and plays like a solid, dependable guitar. I play almost everyday, and for hours at a time on the weekends, and the finish has withstood my fingernails and picks, with no visible damage.

Ok. I haven't been playing very long, but this is definitely a guitar I'd recommend for beginners who don't have a lot of money to mess up. I had advice from people who'd been playing for 15 years or more, and they were all amazed at "how well I did," buying this guitar. I tried other guitars for the same price, and some more expensive. (Ibanez, Gibsons, Takamines and lower-end Martins, if you're interested) Some had lower action, and awful sound, some had great sound, but would tear up your fingers, some were prettier and played like absolute garbage, and others would have cost me a liver and a kidney. I was lucky to find a dealer who really liked these guitars (he'd been playing for 30 years) and didn't rip me off with a more expensive one. If it got lost or stolen, I'd cry and buy another one just like it. If there was ANYthing I could change about it, just b/c I'm a girl, I wish the higher notes sounded as awesome as the bass, which always blows guys away. (The spruce top S6 does have a brighter tone, by the way, and produces great treble notes) I wish I'd gotten a different finish, just b/c this natural one gets dirty more easily. BUT OTHER THAN THAT, I would recommend this to any beginner on a budget, or anyone who's nuts about a lot of bass.

Nice sealed tuners. Great hand-rubbed finish. Inlaid rossete. Hand finished fret board. Plain but very nice. Micarta nut and bridge. Solid rosewood fretboard and bridge. Solid 800-year old cedar top. 3-ply wild cherry sides and back, which by the way is a GOOD feature, very hard and not so prone to spitting. A lot of reviews trash the laminated wood on the sides and back. This laminated wood on this guitar was done right. Very nice. Excellent book-matching. Solid maple neck and head stock. Heal-adjusted truss rod (very stabil).

This is the best sounding guitar I have ever played! I compaired this guitar to Gibson, Martin, Takamine, Ovation, Dean, Washburn, Alvarez, and every thing else I could get my hands on. This Seagull sounded as good or better than anything else I played. The crispness and brilliance of the cedar top with wild cherry sides and back is very noticable. Full rich bass, with great mid range and lovely highs. In my opinion, there is not a guitar made that sounds better than this guitar!

Setup was adequate. I like fairly low action without buzzing. It was a little on the high side, but I was able to get moderately low action with a simple bridge adjustment. The finish is supurb! It is a 4-day, hand-rubbed finish. On almost every other guitar, a poly-urethane finish is sprayed on in 30 seconds, permenantly sealing in all the natural sound of the guitar. The finish on the Seagull is genuine laquer, hand-rubbed on daily to soak in and seal from within, without sufficating the wood and the tone. Very high end. Martin doesn't even do this without moving up to their $3000.00 guitar!

I think this guitar will be played by my son and grandson when I am long gone. I play every day for at least 1 hour or more, and this guitar is very solid. It rarely needs tuning. You would have to harshly and unnessecarily abuse this guitar to ruin the finish or wood. Contrary to previous ratings, this is a very solid guitar, it will last longer than you will.

I've been playing for 25 years. This is the real deal without spending $2000.00. Martin/Gibson tone without the cost. If lost or stolen I would buy another right away without even looking at a different guitar maker.

Not sure of the year it was made! Serial # begins with 97 --- don't know it that has to do with the year it was made or not!?! Hand-made in La Patrie & Princeville, Quebec, Candada. It's a dreadnought with 21 frets. It's 24.84" in length. It has a solid cedar top and laminated cherry back and sides (hardwood not pressboard!), and a fat neck made of Silver Leaf Maple. The cherry sides and back have a Mahogany stain on them that really compliments the Cedar top! The fingerboard and bridge are made of Indian Rosewood. It has brown (chocolate) plastic binding and pickguard. It has no pick-ups (wouldn't have'em --- I love the natural acoustic sound). Locking, Grover-type (Seagull)15:1 ratio tunning machines. 16" fingerboad radius It has a soft satin finish. Some would complain, but I love the soft, natural look it offers --- not to mention the fact that it allows for "more" sound. I was lookin' for a second, $200 guitar to leave at my workplace to play during lunch and breaks. I found this lil' gem at a local Fleamarket and traded my Gibson Epiphone banjo for it. Yeah! I know that the old fella came away smelling a little better in the trade ( I figure that he made off with an extra $100 in the trade), but I'm totally satisfied with my successful treasure hunt! I've had my eyes on a Seagull for the last 3 years, even though my first purchase was an Alvarez PD90! This made the perfect second guitar, in my opinion! It had no case. The old fella that I traded with gave me the best case that he had there --- a little sponge application of black shoe polish really brougt it back to life! I understand that the S6 Cedar comes with only one strap button, however someone had put another one in the middle of the neck base --- a fine job they did too! A strap really comes in handy as the slick finish and rounded edges cause it to slide off of my jeans.

This guitar really suits my style of playing, which is mostly fingerpicking with a little strumming here and there! It really projects the sound to be a low-end guitar. Seagull makes guite a product! The sound is fantastic from the basses to the highs! I have no complaints whatsoever about the sound! The only thing that would sound better would be a more expensive Seagull, Larivee, Martin, or my favorite --- the almighty Taylor! I love my Alvarez PD90 --- the two just sound different, not necessarily better --- the S6 Cedar is just so much fun to play (for hours)!

You couldn't ask for a better bookmatching or bridge! As you can imagine finding it second-hand --- it had a ding or two (remember that soft finish and wood [Cedar])! --- to be expected! The small marrings have no major impact on the cosmetics of the guitar --- most importantly they don't effect the "sound"!

I doubt that this guitar would stand up to "hard", "banging", rigorous, playing due to the soft wood [Cedar] and the soft finish. This is no problem for me, as the majority of what I play is soft, meditative fingerpicking. This guitar should last me until I'm not around to plunk on it anymore! The hardware seems to be sturdy and long-lasting. The strap buttons are very solid!

I've yet to deal with Seagull! I plan to ask for one of the new micarta saddles.

I've been playing for about 2 1/2 yr.s As I mentioned before, I own an Alvarez PD90. I have no complaints with it either ( the Seagull is just a little more "fun" to play --- it has a "different" sound, not a better sound)! I would definitely replace it if damaged or stolen, and if I had the mula, I would invest in a more expensive Seagull model! I love the color, finish, but most of all the sound --- some would say that I don't know what I'm talking about, but I feel that it almost compares to the low-end Martins and Taylors (I've played them and I'm stickin' to my opinion --- though I will own a Taylor someday!) I'm a little afraid that I may accidentally brake the top, though solid, it's so soft feeling! I wish that it had a little abalone here and there to "jazz" it up a bit, but I can live without it!

Beautiful. I play rock and blues, lots of slide, and lots of leads. This guitar has a full sound, very rich and very mellow. Not too bright or punchy, but who wants that? This guitar makes friends who play low-end Martins and Taylors very envious. Bang fer yer buck--I give it a ten.

I love the way this guitar feels. People want to complain about the thin finish. I use heavy jazz picks, and play plenty of heavy ryhthm progressions at full strum. After four years of heavy use, the finish shows some wear, but nothing that would deter me from buying another if I lost this one. If the wood is falling of your guitar, you're abusing it (criminal!).

With normal use, I expect this guitar to last for decades. I put my hand through the top one night when I came home to a dark house. Two splits in the top (yeah, criminal). I got it repaired for fifty bucks. Looks, sounds, and plays like new.

Repair wasn't under warranty, as it was obviously my fault. The dealer fixed it--fast, cheap, and a good job.

I've been playing for ten years. I've owned acoustics from Yamaha, Ibenez, and Alverez, as well as a Taylor Big Baby (15/16 dreadnaught). I get more enjoyment out of this guitar than any of them.
