I bought the standard S6 original with no electronics. Factory tuners, 22 frets, solid cedar top.

As for a rating, it is what it is - a no frills acoustic guitar. Compared to higher-end guitars it might seem a little plain looking, but I find the slightly darker wood (darker than spruce, anyway) and the lack of polish or paint to be quite pleasing to the eye.

Sound : 10
I've just started playing the guitar after years playing the piano. I've been dabbling in jazz, blues, and rock, and do a little finger-picking on the side.

Regardless of style I absolutely love the sound of this guitar. I tried a ton of guitars in the shop before picking this one and have not regretted my choice for an instant. This guitar has a very nice, rich tone and has a real resonance - something I find other guitars in this price range (and even many priced way higher) lack. The sound really carries (much to my neighbor's shagrin)and is very clear.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The action was a little bit high when I got it, but I had it adjusted and it plays fine now. I took it to my local guitar shop after having it for a month to get a free "tune-up" and they said there really wasn't anything they could do for it other than lowering the action. Otherwise, it was in perfect shape.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I haven't had mine long enough to speak to its long-term durability, but I don't foresee any problems. The construction is solid.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I haven't had any reason to contact the company.

Overall Rating : 10
This is the only guitar I own and will probably remain the only acoustic I own. There is absolutely no reason to get another acoustic guitar in this price-range as none of them compare to the tone of this guitar, and this one performs so well that I think it would also be hard to justify spending the money on a higher priced instrument - the S6 sounds that good. Every time I go to the guitar store I play around with the instruments that they have (seriously, I don't think I've ever been in and out in less that an hour) and I still have never regretted getting this guitar.

Features : 9
The significant feature differences from most guitars include:
- solid cedar top
- laminate wild cherry back and sides
- silver maple neck
- satin finish
- 24.84" scale
- wide 1.8" nut width
- TUSQ saddle

Sound : 10
The sound from the Seagull S6 is simply fantastic. The solid cedar top produces a loud, warm, rich, mellow tone that is so different from a spruce top guitar. A very romantic, much darker tone. So beautiful.

Action, Fit, & Finish : No Opinion
The action tends to come from the factory a bit high. This is normal. You have the option to lower it to your liking. I'm a fingerstyle player, so I took it down as far as it could go without buzzing. Perfect. Plays like butta'.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Cedar tops are more prone to scratches and fingernail marks than spruce tops. Treat it with care. Tuners are high quality. The satin finish seems to work well.

Customer Support : 10
All my emails to customer service requesting information have been replied to within 48 hours.

Overall Rating : 10
I own 17 guitars...accoustic steel string, classical, and electric. They include high end models and inexpensive models. The Seagull S6 has a unique voice, due mainly to the cedar top. I like cedar tops on classical guitars rather than spruce tops. The S6 gives me the same option in a steel string. Fit and finish is excellent. High quality craftsmanship.

Body Style is Dreadnought

Tuners (Machine Heads) are Factory

Neck is Canadian "Silver Leaf Maple"

Indian Rosewood Neck w/ 21 Frets and 24.84" Scale

Solid Cedar Top

No electronics

Sound : 10
It suits my music style very well, everything from blues, rock and some Hawaiiana.

The sound of this guitar is amazing, better than some Taylor, Alvarez and Yamaha guitars.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Factory set-up was just fair as the guitar had been at the shop of purchase for a while therefore it "settled", which is good. Had it set up by the "Guitar Doctor" in Fountain Valley, plays like butter now after reseating/grinding/polishing of frets and neck adjustment.

Just a very, very minor mark on the top which has to be actually pointed out in order to notice.

Nut and bridge are perfect.

Reliability/Durability : 8
This guitar can withstand live playing with no problems as it projects its warmth and brightness very well.

The hardware will last with proper care and servicing.

The finish is semi-gloss therefore gauging wear is difficult to determine at this stage.

There is only one strap button at the bottom so you'll have to attach the opposite end of the strap to the headstock.

This is a very dependable guitar as it is built very well and sounds amazing. I would use it at any gig as a primary and feel that it would suffice as the "only" guitar I brought.

Customer Support : 10
Never had to get it "repaired", only set up for optimum play.

Don't know if there was a warranty but the "Guitar Doctor" in Fountain Valley can tweek or repair anything on an ax.

I've never had to deal with Godin/Seagull Guitars customer service as "keeping it local" seems to work very well.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
Playing guitar for 32 years and have had Yamaha acoustics also Stratocaster and Telecaster body guitars with various neck set ups.

Just started playing a few months ago after 45 years of not playing the guitar. I started with a nice Hohner, but was at the guiar shop one day and a fellow was playing a Seagul S6 Original. I loved the warm tone of the S6 and ask to see it and played. The feel and action was so smooth compared to the Hohner. It followed me home as a Christmas present to me.

It is the standard S6, acoustical, non electric.
Made in 2008,

The dealer set it up and put on a lighter seet of strings.

Sound : 9
I am still expermenting with the musical style I like, but find it plas easily and sounds good, flat picked, strummed or finger picled.

Sound is full and warm.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Fit and finsh are nice and no problems with set up. It stays in tune well unless you move it from indoors to out doors or back.

Ihe guitar was a factory second with a slight blimish on the bottom edge of the fret board.

Reliability/Durability : 9
The instrument does more than I want at this time. The finish may be a problem down the road, but I am not rough on my equipment.

Customer Support : 10
I emailed with a question and the factory responded promptly and were friendly.

Overall Rating : 9
If the guitar were stolen or damaged, I'd most likely look for another Seagull.

I have been playing for the second time around about 3 months now. I really like the warm rich sound and the fact it will stay in tune pretty well.

Features : 9
This guitar is a pretty simple one and there's not much to speak of in the way of features. There's no electronics (not on the one I have, anyway...maybe some of them do) so I can't comment on those. The tuners are solid, as is everything else.

I picked this one up used, so I can't say what year it was made in, although I do know that it was handmade in Quebec--all Seagulls are. My guitar has a cutaway so you can access the higher frets, although I don't believe that feature is standard on all S6 guitars.

I suppose the only complaint I have here would be that there's only one strap button, at the bottom of the guitar. All my other have a second one at the heel of the neck, but this one doesn't. If I play with a strap (which I don't do often with this guitar), I have to tie one end to the headstock. Not a big deal, but I think a second strap button would be a nice addition. Some electronics would be nice too, but I'm sure the guitar would've cost more if it had a pickup.

Sound : 10
I'm not sure why the average rating in this category is so low...I looked at every single review and there were only two or three that rated this guitar below an eight for sound. If anyone flames this guitar for sounding bad, they're either deaf or don't know how to play a guitar.

That being said, this guitar has a beautiful sound to it. Dark, warm, and mellow, very rich and harmonious, maybe a tad muddy (but in a good way). If you're looking for something sharp and crisp that cuts through in a mix, this certainly isn't the right guitar. I've tried micing it a few times with condensers to use it live, but I honestly think it sounds its best when it's unplugged. I've used it for some straight acoustic sets and around a campfire and it truly sounds gorgeous.

The solid wood top is nice in the sense that it ages. The more this guitar gets played, the more it ages, and the more it ages, the better it sounds. The guitar isn't plastered with lacquer either, so the wood really gets a chance to vibrate.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I've never had any problems with intonation or fret buzz and the action has always been to my liking--not too high, not too low. The fretboard is nice and wide and it has a really nice feel to it.

Personally, I like the finish on the wood. It's not glossy at all--I wouldn't even say semi-glossy--but it's nice nonetheless. The inlays are simple dots and the rosette is pretty spartan too, but's it's still a great instrument. It won't win any beauty contests, but if you're going only by looks when you're buying a guitar, you've got some serious issues.

The only time I've had something go wrong with this guitar was that once, when I had taken all the strings off to clean and oil the fretboard, the nut fell off. With the lack of tension to hold it down, it's not all that surprising. Not a difficult fix, either. A few drops of Elmer's wood glue and you're all set.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Like I said before, the nut falling off was the only problem I ever had with this guitar. There's not really much to break on it, but everything is solid. I've been playing this guitar for almost six years and while I don't abuse it, I do play it hard from time to time. It's taken everything I've thrown at it and I'm sure it can take a lot more.

I guess the only complaint I have here is that without the coat of lacquer, the wood (which is pretty soft) is relatively exposed and it's really easy to get dents and knicks on this thing. Those are all cosmetic blemishes, obviously--they don't effect the sound--and it's a fair price to pay for having a guitar that can breathe as opposed to one that's drowned in polyurethane.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never had any reason to contact Seagull and I probably never will. I'm not even sure my guitar came with a warranty, although I did buy it used. Sorry, but I can't rate Seagull here.

Overall Rating : 10
I'm sure that for a few thousand dollars, you could probably pick up a Taylor, Martin, Guild, or Gibson that sounds better than this guitar. And I'm sure that if you had a few thousand dollars more, you could buy a custom made instrument that would sound even better. For the price, though, you can't go wrong. A great-sounding solid wood guitar made in Quebec--not China, not Taiwan, not Korea or Mexico--for under $400. What more could you ask for?

I have more guitars than I have time to play, but this one gets played every week--almost every day, as a matter of fact. I'm in love with the sounds I can get out of this guitar and I'm always discovering new things. If I lost this guitar, I'd definitely go looking for another Seagull, although maybe a slightly higher-end model--something with electronics, probably. Overall, this is a great instrument!

Features : 9
First of all, let me say that I am reviewing the

-24 frets.
-Stained (not laminated) cedar top (guitarcenter.com says it's a "semi-gloss lacquer finish").
-Wild cherry back and sides.
-Made in Canada.
-Rosewood fingerboard and bridge.
-Tusq nut and compensated saddle.
-24.84" scale.

Sound : 10
I really love the sound of this guitar. It's really mellow and I really actually don't like to use picks on it, because I get an even warmer, more mellow tone on it. I use medium DR strings, which sound beautiful in my opinion.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
The action was a little high, and I think I might change that a little bit. I like the finish though, because it is stained, not laminated. Laminating a guitar kinda mutes the guitar and gives it a weird sound. My bridge is also peeling off, and I've only had it for about 10 months.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Well, I mean, I don't have any problems with it aside from the bridge peeling off a little. But the cedar top is a bit soft, and it dents kind of easily; however, I think that the softness of the cedar allows it to produce a better tone and am willing to have a small nick or two in it for that.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Haven't dealt with the customer support.

Overall Rating : 10
I am extremely satisfied overall with this guitar. I've played many-a-guitar and this is my second-favorite of all time (my first favorite is my friend's fancy Martin, but really, I think that I only like it more because I only get to play it every once in a while. I think that if I had his and he had mine, I would prefer mine over his).
I've NEVER before heard a guitar with such warm, mellow, full tones. I love this guitar and am surprised that I got it for only $380 (on sale). I would definitely pay up to... I'd say around $450 for this guitar, but I'm only 18 and don't have a job; if I had lots of money, I'd probably be willing to pay much more for it. I really don't have a problem with this guitar, even if it needs repairs--I'm just glad I got this one instead of any of the others.

GOOD FINGERSTYLE GUITAR. THIS GUITAR HAS A CHARACTER AND SOUND ALL ITS OWN, ITS SO UNIQUE, I'M GLAD I BOUGHT IT. I KEEP THIS GUITAR AT WORK SO I HAVE SOMETHING PLAY ON MY LUNCH BREAK. I LIKE THIS GUITAR ALOT BUT I WOULD NOT REPLACE IT IF IT WERE STOLEN, I'D BUY A TAYLOR INSTEAD. MY MAIN GUITAR IS A TAYLOR DREADNOUGHT.
I DIDN'T LIKE THE HEADSTOCK OVERLAY,ITLOOKS LIKE A STICKER, GIVES IT A CHEAP APPEARANCE. THEY SHOULD HAVE LEFT IT WOOD.

I was in shock, I like my Simon /Patrick but this does nothing for me
What good is solid wood if it sounds worse than laminated plywood
So dead a travel guitar does just as well, Resonance, sustain, non existent.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 5
I like the construction. clean, good fit, The action would have to be set up, by the next owner.

Reliability/Durability : 7
I bought it barely used and you have to be really careful with this type of finish, it is what it is, a little fragile but stays in tune .
Aside from that the construction seems solid.

so I bought this online thinking I was in the same league
The sound is MUCH worse than a Hohner or samick or washburn or any bottom end guitar
NO resonance NO bass NO presence Is this a lemon or has the whole world gone nuts.
I'm gonna replace this with something higher end there is no free lunch this is no Taylor Guild or Martin........

Features : 9
I am honestly astonished that there has never been a review on this guitar. Anyway...

This is a late 90's Seagull steal string acoustic. Standard dreadnought body, cedar top, wild cherry back and sides, rosewood fretoboard, matte finish, 21 frets. No electronics, but that's not why I bought this guitar.

Sound : 9
I received this guitar as a gift when I was about 14 (8 years ago). At the time it went very unappreciated. I covered it with stickers, took it to bon fires, spilled beer on it, let people I didn't know play it, never changed the strings etc. etc.

After growing up a bit and truly learning how to play, it's become a blessing. This acoustic has great projection and a colorful "woody" tone to it. No frequency range is really louder than another...pretty even all the way across. Though it does seem to be a bit mellower in the high end compared to the bright (kind of brittle) sounding Fenders in the same price range. I've gone through many types of strings and it seems to prefer Phosphor Bronze as opposed to 80/20.

It sounds nothing short of amazing for a $350 guitar. I work at Guitar Center and have fiddled around with just about every Taylor and Martin we have in the acoustic room and very few of them can even hold a candle. Gibson and Breedlove are my favorites as far as acoustics go, but a good sounding one of either of those brands will cost you anywhere from $1000-$4000.

Also, I do believe this instrument has improved with age. Seagull uses an oil finish instead of laquer, leaving it matte (not glossy). This allows the wood to breathe and more evenly age and I swear this thing sounds better every single day. But watch out, it dings up really easy.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Very low action and easy to play. It has a chunkier neck than most (think more Les Paul than Fender), but I prefer that on an acoustic. Only problem I've had is slight intonation problems with the B and G string, which tends to be a problem area for most lower end acoustics. It's only slightly off and has never stopped me from enjoying to play.

Reliability/Durability : 8
Like I mentioned before, the matte finish makes it very easy to ding and scratch up the guitar. Mine is covered in dents, scratches, and awful marks left by stickers...but it's never cracked, warped, or totally broken through (and I haven't treated her too nice over the years). So overall, it's been very reliable...I haven't.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with them.

Overall Rating : 10
I think, for the money, this is one of the best options someone just starting has. It's something fairly inexpensive that won't be junk by the time you really start learning to play. I always hate seeing people buying the $79 Squiers cause they don't want to spend too much on the kids first guitar.

The way I see it, that's not even fair...give a kid a guitar that can't stay in tune and has action 1/2" off the fret board and see if he wants to keep learning after the first day.

Finish is satin , scratches up, unit is a well used demo. Fretboard feels good, smaller profile frets, has pickguard, machine tuners, angled headstock. Cedar Top - very very tight grain, mohogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, tusq nut and saddle - harder than bone, yet easy to work with, holds up over time. Body has nice grain, cherry laminate honey tan colour - bookmatched back, bolt on body block... solid tight construction. Excellent get what you pay for ratio.

Sound : 10
Got this guitar on ebay fer a hunnerd bucks, heavily beaten/used demo, has a crack on the soundboard (came from texas - probly no humidity control/owner self control) dings galore. In spite of its condition the thing sounded great with a mouldy old set of strings, with a brand new set of martin broze/plain steel mediums this puppy sounds like gold!Excellent sound seperation on all chords up/down the fretboard at all volumes. Have heard reviews that cedartops will sound muddy at hard strumming - NOT THE CASE with my guitar. This guy sounds great fingerstyle and hard strummed. The guitar sounds solid when tapped on. It perfect for anything you play an acoustic for, the only thing would be max volume won't be as loud as sitka top.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The guitar needed a bit of a shave of the saddle, but it plays great the neck is viagra straight. The action is easy, soundboard scratches up, make sure you put a pickguard on it.

Reliability/Durability : 9
This guitar is damaged and I love it! I'm sure whoever had it before me did worse by it than anything I could ever do to it!! I would take this guy anywhere and rely on it anytime!

cedar top, no electronics, low gloss finish. It's not an eye-catcher, but I'll take good sound over looks. Good tuners, one of the best guitars I seen for staying in tune. I like the look of the wild cherry back and sides.

Sound : 8
I love the sound of the cedar top - very mellow, but good volume. Good for strumming or fingerpicking. The sound gets a little thin above the 7th fret.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I bought it used at a pawn shop. There's a little wear on the cedar top and a dead spot on the third fret of the sixth string. One day I'll have a luthier check it out, but I can live with it. Medium action. It has a wide nut which makes for easy fingerpicking. The guitar really fits my hands.

Reliability/Durability : 10
The cedar top will scratch if you look at it the wrong way, but that goes with the territory.

I picked up this guitar just yesterday from a local musician i found using this website www.craigslist.com we made the arangments and i picked up the guitar three days after the first email. this guitar has a solid cedar top and wild cherry sides and back. the finish is semi gloss wich to some may not be the best looking but it definatley makes up in sound. it has an eq and pickup that was installed by the previous owner but did not come standard on the guitar so i wont get into that. i am not sure of the year of this guitar however it is an older model. the guitar was hand made in a small village in canada who judging from there website take very great amount of pride in building their insturments.

Sound : 10
i play in an acoustic band we play in a style along the lines of the scene aesthetic and secondhand serenade. this is my second acoustic i have owned and let me tell you there is a huge difference. my older acoustic is a very light guitar with very bright sound to it. this guitar is a bit deeper and has a very full sound to it. the seagull, is a full size guitar with a smaller upper bout wich reduces the boominess you would get from a guitar with a larger uper bout, seagull says this body size is well recomended for recording wich is the reason i bought it. the guitar can be a little muddy when played to hard, but this guitar definately has a sound of its own and this sound is just the sound i was looking for

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
im not sure how it was set up in the factory but im sure the previous owner lowered the action, its got the perfect action for me. the only flaw on my specific guitar is that the neck was cracked but has been repaired by a professional guitarsmith.

Reliability/Durability : 10
this guitar would definately work well for live playing and studio recording. the hardware seems nice, its an older guitar and it still has stock tuners that work perfectly fine so that a plus. i can definately depend on this guiar. and i will not bring a back up to my next show although the cedar can be dented easily especially since its semi gloss finish, but hey charecter right?

Customer Support : No Opinion
i sent seagull a email yesterday and it has not been replied but it has only been a day so i have no right to answer this question

Overall Rating : 10
ive been playing for about 4 years, this is by far the best purchase i have ever made, my other acoustic is an older one not sure of the brand but its around 50 years old. if this guitar were stolen or lost i would definately purchase another one. i love this guitar everything about iy, i never want to put it down!

I have had my Seagull S-6 since 1989, and it gets better all the time. I just had new bone nut and saddle put on it as the old nut was worn at the first string and I just went ahead and had the bone saddle added on. I also have a pre Fender Guild D6 that cost a lot more than the Seagull, yet I still prefer the Seagull.I periodically try out nice expensive guitars at the Guitar Central store and rarely do I find anything that matches up, and when I do find something, it's selling for more than 2 grand. Seagull rules.

The seagull s6, i believe it was made somewhere in a little village in Canada, my guitar is a couple of years old so i would say it was made in 2003 or so. It has a solid ceder top, Satin Finish, Silverleaf Maple neck, HPL Cherry back and sides, Sealed machines, Tusq nut and compensated saddle, 1.8" at the nut.
Have to say plain guitar, though when i do look at it i find it nice, very elegant. If your looking for a "flash" guitar i wouldnt recommond this one. although suits me fine.

Sound : 10
WOW, i love this guitar for its sound, its just beautiful to hear, its warm, rich, and it suits nearly everything i play, i play a variety ranging from rock, blues to folk etc. into a bit of everything. theres absolutely no fret buzz anywhere, purrs like a kitten. its great for fingerpicking. LOVE IT!!! ive played far more expensive guitars that dont sound half as good.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
the guitar was very well set up. i think i must have tried at least 4 different guitars in the shop tho which one i tried was very good. the guy in the shop, who i actually know lowered the action for me, as ive brought guitars off him before and he knoews how i like them but so i guess its just how you like your action. there were no flaws with this guitar. only one thing, its one the tops ceder so have to be really carefull with it, otherwise it will ding.

this guitar has pretty much been everywhere ive been, jams with friends, college, gigs, and its held up fantastic. at all my gigs never used a backup havent felt like i needed too, and the good thing is i think this guitar still has a mighty lot to give still. hardware is excellent, closed tuners, hold off tuning, my baby stays in tune for ages, and i always check if it needs tuning. although i like the idea of the finish it lets the top breathe and vibrates to project and sound better, it does seem a little thin and like i said before does ding a far bit, but lets just say that gives it character and i havent been put off by that, afterall its the sound that matters?! rite.

Customer Support : 6
these guys are great. so friendly, ive been emailing them for a while now and everything ive had to ask has been answered within a day, though i have had no problems with my guitar so i havent really had to "deal" with them. though very nice people.

i have to say i love this guitar its one of my favourites,i own a gibson, though thats also off my friend in the guitar shop. For the price range that this guitar is in, its perfect, i hav not come across a guitar that sounds this great, and i hav a part time job in a music store so always play on the guitars there. if it was stolen i would without thinking get another one or try out another guiatr from the seagull range. what i love about this guiatr is the sound most of all, its beautiful i really cant describe it, im not soo keen though on the finish but thinking about it now, i wouldnt have it any other way, it just means i have to be careful. i love the smell also of wood eveytime i open my case, and it hasnt faded, even after 2 years. i get a real sense that the people who make these guitars care about the prodect they are producing unlike a hugh company who only cares about how much they will make. Like i said i tried 4 or so seagulls when chosing which i would say is a must, because the way they are made every guitar is different, and its important to find out which one you like the best, thats even if you do like it.i chose this guiatr has i had a smaller buget this time around and this was the best. i took the sound, features, durability all into account when buying and it was by far the best i could find, if your looking for a guitar under 400 then try this one, its great.

Made in 2003, Solid Cedar Top, Satin Finish, Silverleaf Maple neck, HPL Cherry back and sides, Sealed machines, Tusq nut and compensated saddle, 1.8" at the nut.

Good features, nothing fancy.

Sound : 7
Sounds great for fingerstyle playing. Nice warm sound. No buzzing. Works okay with a pick but gets a little muddy sounding if played hard with a pick.

I played a few before I bought and since. I found that some sounded better than others and I think the newer ones with compound curve neck sound a little nicer than the older Seagulls.

I give it a 7 even though I really like the sound. I would give a Martin 000-28VS about a 9.9 and a D-28 about 8.5 so I can't give the S6 a 10 :)

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
This guitar had a nice finish from the factory and the action was really good. No buzzing. Not extremely low action but very comfortable to play. Nice low profile neck with smooth finish.

Reliability/Durability : 8
Seems very durable and reliable but I've only played it for about a year and a half and I take good care of it. Cedar dings a little but not terribly.

I played when I was in High School and started over with a nice new Seagull S6.

The best feature of the Seagull S6 is the value. I didn't play anything in this price range that sounded as good. I also didn't think that the more expensive Seagulls sounded significantly better so I went with the S6. Though the Spruce top models do sound really nice and are slightly brighter sounding to me.

The wide neck is versatile and the light gage strings and short scale make this a guitar that is pretty easy on the fingers and wrist.

Overall, an excellent value in a guitar.

Canadian-made, no electronics, cedar top and wild cherry sides. I am not sure when my particular S-6 was made; I found it in a pawn shop in 1988, and it differs slightly from newer Seagulls I've seen. I would guess it was a couple of years old when I got it. I think it was probably made before Seagull had any kind of distribution in America. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I started seeing Seagulls in shops in the United States. I traded an ES-335 copy for it. I basically went into the pawnshop and got curious - I had never heard of Seagulls before. I pulled it off the wall and played a G chord, and was knocked out. Even with rusty strings, it sounded great. I spent a few minutes playing it and then thought, "I must be nuts," and put it back. But I ended up coming back the next day and playing it some more. On the third visit I brought the 335 copy and the pawnshop owner said, "Sure, get it outta here!" With new strings, it had a marvelous sound. I was hooked.
As in the other reviews, the finish is a non-glossy satin, with looks sacrificed for tonality. The guitar originally had its stock tuners, which in my case did not work well; I replaced them with Grovers. The body style is a "round-shouldered" rather than a dreadnaught style, and the scale length is 24.5 rather than the more common 25.5. This makes it easy to play, and gives a different resonance than a longer-scaled guitar. To my ear it adds warmth and color to the sound.

Sound : 8
The S-6 has been with me for 17 years! It suits my style of everything-and-the-kitchen-sink music well. I would describe the sound as more of a "British acoustic guitar" sound, much closer to the sounds that guitarists like Bert Jansch and John Renbourn get - less brash and darker than, say, a Martin or equivalent. However, note and chord definition are quite good, and the guitar holds its own in a jam session or in a recording mix. As a solo guitar it is outstanding, and if you use dropped-D tunings it really resonates. I frankly prefer the sound of this guitar over many more expensive guitars, which is why I've kept it for years. I have owned and played other more expensive guitars, and I have a Guild D-25 (pre-Fender) that just doesn't sound as good as this old inexpensive Seagull. The cedar top adds a lot of color and warmth, and the shorter scale (24.5 as opposed to most acoustics' 25.5) makes it easy to play.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
I have no idea what the factory setup was, since this was a pawn-shop rescue. The action was good, and I haven't had to reset it a lot in the years I've owned it. This is not a guitar you buy for looks. It's not ugly, but no one will mistake it for a D-45. I am afraid I have put some wear on the poor thing, but it does have a nice understated, clean look. The tortoiseshell binding around the body is a nice touch. I had issues with the original tuners as mentioned above, so I took them off and replaced them with Grovers, which was the perfect choice.

Reliability/Durability : 8
This guitar withstood a lot of abuse. I traveled all over the country with it in a cheap case and performed all over the place in all kinds of environments (and humidities). I used it multiple times without a backup. Finally in 1998 the bridge came off the body. It didn't break; the glue just gave up. A repairman friend cleaned it up and reattached it with some hide glue, and as soon as the glue set properly, the S-6 was back in business. This was the most major problem I had and it didn't take much to fix. Considering the fact that this guitar was made before Seagull had wide distribution in the U.S. (meaning it was built for a drier climate at the time), considering that I used it mercilessly for years, and considering that I was living in the steaming heat/humidity of Louisiana, that's pretty good. Since the repair I have had absolutely no problems with it.

Customer Support : 8
I never had to deal with the company; I didn't even find out who they were until a couple of years after I bought the guitar. This was in the pre-internet days, so I searched the phone directory and finally called the Lasido Company in 1990 or so to find out more about my guitar. It was a pretty hilarious conversation, because the person on the other end of the phone spoke mostly French, and I don't speak French, but I got that it was made in La Patrie and was one of their less expensive models. He was a nice guy and I got a free catalog out of the deal. I haven't bothered them since then, but their website is quite nice.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing a long time (30 years) and have a lot of instruments. I consider this Seagull S-6 one of the luckiest finds I ever made. If anything happened to the Seagull I would either repair it or buy another S-6 in a heartbeat, no hesitation. I have played newer ones and they have the same great feel and sound as mine. I have compared it to other guitars and in most cases, the Seagull comes out ahead in sound and playability. I have played Martins and Gibsons that were stiffer and less tonally pleasing than the Seagull. I also played a show opening for an artist who was a vintage Martin collector. He absolutely went nuts over the tone of the Seagull. "It's a what?? from where??" I refrained from telling him that this was a $400 guitar and let him enthuse about it. The only criticism I have ever had about the Seagull was that the tuners, as mentioned, were not worthy of it, but the Grovers fixed that. The Seagull S-6 is an inexpensive, great-sounding, easy-playing acoustic guitar that compares well sonically with many more expensive guitars. I will continue playing mine and may get another one just so this one won't get too much more worn out!

I bought this Seagull S6 in 2004. 14 frets. No cut away. Solid Cedar top. No electronics. Just the standard S6. Closed tuners. Stays tuned nicely.

Sound : 10
If you think you want a Martin or a Taylor try one of these Seagulls first. The sound from this guitar is beautiful, warm, with great volume. No fret buzz anywhere. The all cedar construction makes this thing sing like an angel. It's great for finger picking, strumming, you know....Dylan, Taylor, Cash, Kristofferson, type music. There is absolutely nothing to dislike about the sound of this guitar.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I find no flaws in this guitar. They are hand made in LaPatrie Canada with all Canadian wood. Satin finish. The wood is CEDAR so you can't bang it around like and ax or you'll ding the wood. The action was a tad high for my liking but I took it for a professional setup and now it's great. Barr chords are pickable up on 12.

Reliability/Durability : 8
Great guitar for stage playing. Hardware is excellent, closed tunners that hold the tuning well. The finish is satin and with a little lemon or almond oil once or twice a tear should hold up well.

Customer Support : No Opinion
No experience dealing with customer support. These Seagulls do have a lifetime guarantee.

I have been playing guitar since 1966 and have owned a bunch of guitars. I don't know if I'm neurotic or just hard to please but I have returned or sold many guitars because I just couldn't fall in love with them. This Seagull is a keeper. I have probably bought the last guitar I'll ever buy having bought this one. I own this Seagull S6 and a Big Baby Taylor. I would definitely replace this guitar if anything happened to it.

This guitar was made in 2003 in Canada. It has a Spruce top, cherry sides and back with a maple neck. The finish is satin, which looks much like bare wood, which I like a lot. It has a uniquely styled headstock and chromed tuners, which work very smoothly and keep the guitar in tune as they should. The neck and fretboard have a "just right" feel to them. In short, the guitar looks good, understated and simple, but elegant.

Sound : 9
The sound of this guitar is awesome! The tone, sustain and projection is the best I have heard in anything in that price range. In fact, I played all kinds of guitars up to $2,000
Martin's; and I gotta tell ya, there is not much
difference between them and this one, acoustically speaking. The Takamine, Fender and Yamahas did not resonate as well, IMHO.
The Tacomas and Martins sounded similar with maybe
just a hint more bottom range. I am really impressed.

The only thing that I don't like is that the guitar is so easily scratched, but I would give up aesthetics for tone any day.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The action is a bit high and heavy for my taste, but there is no buzzing, so I will adapt. I would call the setup somewhat above average in general and very good for this price point. The fit and finish was very good with no flaws noted.

Reliability/Durability : 8
The reliability has been great so far, and I expect it to be dependable, but I have only been playing this guitar for a couple weeks.

Never had a problem

I am still a novice having played on and off for a few years. I have owned some Yamaha acoustics and Fenders Strats. I have played Martins, Takamines, Tacomas, Fenders etc.

If it were stolen, I would replace it with another in a heartbeat (after eliminating the bandit).

The only thing I wish it had was another strap button, but that is a 2 minute/$1 fix.

The best features about the guitar are that it is constructed with a solid top and wood, sounds awesome, is made in North America has a nice neck/fretboard feel, but costs less than a lot of "name brand" laminate guitars from China that sound and play half as good.

It would be a great guitar at twice the price.

Solid-top, dreadnought style, basic solid top guitar, made of spruce I believe

Sound : 10
This guitar sounds amazing. Bottom line. Since it is solid top it has molded to fit me, sonically speaking. I think it sounds better than any other guitar I've played, except for vintage acoustics costing well over 2000 or 3000. It is a BIG sound, it is truly an ACOUSTIC guitar, and it is vibrant and the complete opposite of dull. Even with martin strings more than 4 months old, it isn't close to sounding dull. It is a great guitar.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I haven't gotten anything about the guitar changed, except I had a dean markley pickup installed (a $50 magnetic pickup, installed in the guitar itself, got the strap peg replaced by a cable input), the guitar doesn't need anything at all..

Reliability/Durability : 9
I play this guitar so much, and I've never had a problem with anything. very dependable, stays in tune (although I'm OCD and I retune it alot, but I know that what some people call "in tune" this guitar will stay in for a long time, but I just find myself having to fix the tiny tuning problems by ear, which I've become very adept at.)

i love the sound of this guitar. it is clean, loud and rich. i live near a really big guitar center and like to try all the guitars in there, and, frankly, wouldn't trade this one it...i haven't found anything in the price range or even near it that sounds as good.

the action seemed a little high but not bad. i like the flat, near non-existent finish though i have a number of scratches that i don't really mind. no flaws that i found. well made instrument.

ok, here's where my experience is different from what i've read. i wish this was my workhorse guitar but it isn't. despite keeping a damp-it in the guitar, it cracked down the front within the first month. i live in one of those god-awful overheated nyc apartments where i can't control the heat...windows are open with little effect.

both rudy's guitars (in nyc, where i bought it) and seagull were great about this and they quickly replaced my guitar, though it was really my problem, not the guitar's. a year has passed and i since got a humidifier that seems to be helping things... I went away last weekend to LA for a few days, didn't run the humidifier and this second guitar cracked. my classical guitar is fine, so i think these guitars might be a little sensitive . now, i don't hold this against seagull.....i hold it against my landlord. but my experience says be careful with this guitar.

Customer Support : 10
seagull was excellent. you can feel that you are dealing with a small company that knows its products and cares about them. quickly replaced my guitar with absolutely no hassle.

Overall Rating : 8
i've been playing for about 6 years and own a couple of other guitars (vintage classical, ernie ball music man luke). i play indie rock, heavy metal, loud folk/alt country....this guitar has been great for its power. it really rocks for an acoustic, you know. i would buy it again but have hesitations and apprehensions about how easily it cracked....as it is easier to buy a new guitar than find a new decent apt in nyc, i guess i will have to figure out how much heat my new guitar can withstand. i may buy another and be compulsive about it. not sure yet.

for people with more control over such things as heat and humidity, i highly recommend it. i'm going to try to fix this and keep it as my beater guitar. drag.

Built in 2003, in La Patrie Quebec. Solid Cedar top. Back and sides are tri-laminate wild cherry, which turns out to be a spectacular tone wood. It is important to note that the back and sides aren't simply made of laminated chip-board, or plywood. It is all wild cherry wood, only 3 layers of it are glued together. This is not a detractor but a strength of these guitars, as solid wood is often undesirable for backs and sides due to their tendency to crack under adverse conditions. Having three layers makes the back and sides much stronger, but still maintaining all of the sound qualities of solid wood. Have I said enough on the issue? Neck is made of Silver Leaf Maple (very nice wood). The neck is a real selling point for these guitars as they are exceptionally well designed, and the attention to detail is exquisite. You would expect to see this kind of workmanship on a much more expensive instrument. I've been playing for 16 years, and I have no problem playing this as my primary instrument. Even the tuners are top quality. The finish is Semi-gloss laquer, which is key because it allows the soundboard to vibrate freely. So many guitars in this price range use polyurethane as a finish and the result is essentially a plastic sound board. The wood is deadend by the finish. The semi-gloss Laquer does make the guitar much more succeptible to cosmetic damage, but in the end, sound is the key, isn't it?

Sound : 10
The sound is really what matters and this guitar comes through in spades. I had owned a solid top Flambeau guitar (made by Lowden guitars)for about 12 years before I had to buy a new one due to a catastrophic crack in the soundboard. This was an exceptionally rich and loud instrument, and I have to say that the Seagull sounds just as good if not better. And that's right out of the box. It hasn't had the benefit of 12 years of aging that the Flambeau had. The lows are deep and rich and the highs are bright and clear (not as bright as the spruce obviously, but plenty bright for a cedar-topped instrument. Oh yeah did I mention that it is LOUD? Fantastic projection.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I was really amazed at the attention to detail that a guitar priced at $299.00 CANADIAN could have. I was expecting little flaws to be apparent everywhere on the guitar, but it is truly flawless. You can tell that these beauties are a labour of love fot the good people in La Patrie Quebec. The workmanship on the neck is exquisite, even the inside bracing and wood work is impressive. No globs of glue, or unsanded peices of wood, nicely bookmatched top. Even the tuners are great.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Obviously the finish requires some extra care, but the sound that it affords is well worth it. It can't be treated like a beater, but it will withstand a fair amount of punishment. Don't expect it to be aesthetically pleasing throughout its life, because the top is very easily marked. It is about as solidly built as you'd want a well made guitar to be. The hardware is of high quality and should last indefinitely.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with Godin.

Overall Rating : 10
I am a advanced player, having played many styles (rock, blues, classical) for about 15 years, and I am not ashamed to say that this has become my primary instrument. I decided to buy this guitar after a great deal of research, and the choice was obvious after reading all of the glowing reviews for the S6 my choice was clear. I tried several guitars within this price range, and many well above (up to $800.00) and the S6 held up spectacularly. I would not hesitate to get another one if it was lost or stolen. This should mark a pivotal time in guitar making, because once the word gets out in ernest, the big companies won't have a chance. Godin is the first to make the statement that a less expensive guitar can have incredible sound and features, if they are built intelligently.

Made 2002, Solid Cedar Deck, Wide Nut, Nice Tuners. The finish is lackluster to say the least. The head looks stupid. The appearance of this guitar will not solve your woman problems any quicker. However, deeply imbedded in this guitar is "the truth". Read on.

No crappy poly's = premium sound board vibration

This guitar is warm and full. Looks sacrificed for sound.

This guitar sells for a few hundred Canadian and puts others in higher price catagories to shame. YOU WILL NOT FIND BETTER SOUND FOR THE DOLLAR.

The guitar is well built and should have no mechanical problems. Again, in my opinion, this guitar looks like crap. Without the poly gloss finish it will scratch easy, but who cares. It may well look better with scratches. Or better yet smash it up Hendrix style and buy another one. You can buy three of these for the price of a solid top Takemine.

This guitar should be a cult classic. I'd like to tatoo some cool shit on the sound board using a wood burner. The dry finish is perfect for this.

I was looking for a campfire guitar that wouldn't make my cry if I woke up hungover and found it outside in the morning dew. I ended up with more than I was looking for. What a joke. I even use it for some recording over my solid top tak. Jam it in front of a condenser mic and strum away. I like that I don't have to baby like I do with my other $1200 guitars. I'm always paranoid about humidity pertaining to guitars and it's nice that I can take anywhere without worry. This is the perfect utility guitar due to great sound, cost to replace if destroyed. Excellent for Parties, Campfires, Home Composition, Outside the Beer store. Gigging? My review is based on a non-cutaway, non-electric S6. You can buy cutaway with l.r. baggs pup but up goes the price. Before I bought my Tak I considered a Seagull Artist Series Cedar with the Baggs I-Beam pup. This is Seagull's big ticket item. These run in the $1100 cdn range. I went with the tak for a hundred bucks more. Reason? #1 Tak sounded a little better #2 In Canada a Seagull is a menacing bird that sh-its all over the place and make obnoxious noises. I wish they weren't called that.

Hand-made in Canada. No idea what year. 22 fret, solid cedar top. No original electric pickup. Low-gloss finish, dreadnought body. Non-locking tuners, they say 'Made in W. Germany' so must be pre-1990. Mine came used with a hard case.

Sound : 9
I like to play Christian, Blues, Rock, mellow. I just installed a Fishman Natural I under-saddle pickup which sounds great. The hole was already pre-drilled under the saddle and installation was pretty easy.
The S6 has a full rich sound due to the cedar top, somewhat bass-heavy. According to the Seagull website, the more it is played the better it sounds. Mine's at least 12 year old. Sounds terrific, especilly with a new set of strings.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Mine needed a slight adjustment to the truss rod. The neck is straight as an arrow now, with a quick finish. Action is nice and low with no buzz. It was very easy to learn, as this was my first guitar.
The finish on the cedar top was low-gloss so it keeps from having to polish handprints all the time, however it has a soft durability and it is easy to gouge the wood. Take it easy with this one!

Reliability/Durability : 9
I've played live without a backup with no worries. Very solid strap buttons, although I had to replace the one due to the jack I installed with my pickup. The hardware is as good as it comes, rarely needs tuning unless a big temp or humidity change.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with Seagull. Seems like a very reputable manufacturer.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing just over a year now. I would have liked a guitar with electric pickup to it with an eq, but I solved that problem by installing my own. I'd be really bummed out if it were lost or stolen, this is my BABY! I love it because it has the great sound of any other handmade guitar costing 5 times the amount. I would recommend the S6 to anyone wanting a first guitar that won't be obsolete or fall apart in a year or two. It's a great guitar to learn on.

The same basic guitar that is described in all the other reviews. Made in Canada. Solid cedar top, wild cherry back and sides. I got this as my first "real" guitar in 1989 and have been playing ever since. As far as features...what else do you need? Six strings and a big hole in the middle. This is one of the first guitars I remember having a satin finish...since then I have seen a ton of other makers introduce the same finish...Martin for sure. I think it looks cool. It only came with one strap button, but it is easy and cheap to add a second one.

Sound : 9
I play country, bluegrass, blues and rock on this thing. It has traveled to every bluegrass jam I have ever attended and kept up...it is funny to watch those bluegrassers raise their eyebrows when you show up with something other than a Martin D-28...but more than a few have said it sounded pretty damn good. I like the sound...sort of dark, but not boomy. Sounds good flatpicked and fingerpicked. It is my favorite guitar to play country rhythm on.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I didn't know shit about action when I got this thing...I was just learning, but I kept playing it so it must not have been too bad. It's been set up a few times over the years. No buzzes and the frets have held up great (better than my Taylor 815). There were no noticeable flaws when I got the guitar. I have always liked the finish on the neck...not that slick laquer they put on some guitars...more like the natural wood...in fact I've worn the finish off behind the first 3 frets...I about crapped when it started to happen...I thought I was ruining the guitar.

I like the wide neck...really comfortable for me. It feels wider than my Taylor and just a little bit deeper. I have a Shenandoah (sp?) from the 80's and that is like playing on a Louisville Slugger!

Reliability/Durability : 8
This guitar has been everywhere...camping, live gigs, to the beach, The mountains of New Mexico and it is still one of my favorite guitars. Not because it is the best sounding that I own, but because it has got a lot of character.

The only quality issue that I had with the guitar is the B string. For a long time it never seemed in tune with the rest of the guitar. The guitar came with a non-compensated saddle, so that was changed. No dice. Finally a repairman actually moved the saddle back for the B-string (that one string now has it's own mini-saddle) and it has been fine ever since.

Yes, the top is soft and mine shows it. Every ding, scratch, pick mark shows. I think it looks great. I look forward to the day I wear a hole in the top...hell that's as close as I'll ever get to being Willie Nelson! If the cosmetic issue bothers you...this is not the guitar for you. I've been playing the thing for over ten years now and it is still kickin' and lots of the scratches hold a lot of great memories...that has value to me. My guitar came with closed back Schaller tuners and they are still rockin' too.

Have never even thought of calling the company. I usually take make guiatars to local people that I know and trust.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for over ten years and never have gotten past playing chords, I just like to play and sing and write songs. I have just recently gone back and started to learn guitar for real and this guitar is one of my two main practice guitars. I own a Taylor 815c, '67 Gibson Southern Jumbo, A Washburn ES335 knockoff, A Fender Tele and a Strat.

Technically these are not "great" gutars. There are tons of boxes that can blow this sucker out of the water, but as far as value goes...these are the shit. Let's face it..music is about having fun and making memories. As far as that goes, this guitar is a flat out 10. I've written more songs on it than any other guitar that I own and this thing has been more places than most of my friends and really...are you going to take your $2000 Taylor trout fishing with you? Me neither, I'll just take my Seagull and not worry about it.

okay, i was on my way home from work and i had the sudden urge to visit the local pawn shop. just wanted to see if they had any guitars or amps that might have just came in. well, i see my cousin working there. i was like "Hey Bro! What's Up?!?" well, after a lil' small talk i ask him to show me the guitars. i see this nice acoustic leaning against the wall. i ask him to show me it. i strum a few chords and i was like "Whoa! Sounds good babeeee!!!" i was for 90 bucks. i know a bargain when i see one. i mean, it had a nice sound. full and rich. and it played nice too! so i tell my cousin i want it and he tells me to hold up. he punches up some figures in the coputer and tells me he will give it to me for 50 bucks!! ALLRIGHT!!! YEAH!!!! WOOHOO!!! WHOOPEE!!!!

good sound. nice and full. i was impressed with it BEFORE i saw how inexpensive the price tag was. actually, it was a price sticker, but that is not the important thing. the important thing is that i am one happy guitar player. saved a whole bunch of bucks and still got a quality instrument....THANKS COUSIN!!!!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
the action is really good. not to high and still low enough for me to do my Al Dimeola runs...aww yeah. the guitar has a very nice finish to it. nice woodgrain. the previous owner kinda messed up the top but you could tell on the sides and back that it was given special care when being built. BAD PREVIOUS OWNER! BAD!!!

Reliability/Durability : 8
you can tell by the waer and tear on the front of the guitar that it has been played...a lot! it has a bunch of nicks and scratches. not very bad, but they are there. it seems to be a very durable instrument and i am well pleased by not just the sound, but the stability of the instrument. stays in tune, has taken a beating and still performs up to standards, nice finish, and nice sound.

i have been playing guitar for almost 14 years. i am primary and electric guitarist and i use this guitar at home as a practice guitar. after much testing out other acoustics and i have been actually looking into making my 1st steel string acoustic purchase, i can say that i am pleased with this one. if i would have seen it in its brand new state at a local music store, easily i would have paid 400 for it, brand new of course. after weighing the price, quality, sound, durabilty, and looks....i give it a 9.

I tried 5 S6s of various wood combinations and finishes at this music store. I A/Bed them along side some Dean Exoticas and a few Ovations (Vipers?), tried the Taylors too.

The Seagulls ranged in price from about $400 to $1000. I'm not sure if they were all or some used, though no of them was damaged in any way. The point of this review - don't buy one of these without playing it. So, here's my opinions on sound and fit for the bunch:

Sound : 5
I missing what everyone is seeing in these guitars. Take a full sounding six string, throw a blanket on it and -> you've got a Seagull. Just plain lousy, all six guitars. I keep trading off with the Deans and Ovations, and Taylor into the mix, going from one dead-sounding Seagull to another. Each guitar had certain positive and limiting characteristics, but the Seagulls were uniformily dull and lifeless.

Playing folks acoustic was OK, just lifeless sounding. Played some blues, completely indistinct. On the Dean and Ovation the blues licks just popped, you could tease out some vibrato and false harmonic. On the Seagulls, the notes were so dull sounding you could do nothing with them. Yuk

Action, Fit, & Finish : 4
Yuk. Clumsy necks compared to any of the other brands there. Just a bad depth, width, radius combination. Neck felt grabby. The wood finish felt a primative, a littel distracting.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion

Wow, no disrepect to any Seagull owners, maybe we have much different tastes. I own or have owned Gibson, Guild, Dean, and Ovation acoustics. I found the Seagull virtually unplayble due somewhat to their neck design, but more so do to their overwhelming dullness. All I can say is - play before you buy, this is not something you should pick up on ebay hoping for the best.

It's a acoustic guitar, pretty basic but well put together.I've got the micro EQ electronics which sound nice but are limited with only treble bass and volume controls. That said it gets a good balanced tone plugged in. I have read how alot of people are put off by the matte finish, but I find it comfortable and real feeling. Not plastic like so many poly finishes.

Sound : 10
I play rock, blues, folk, jazz, etc. with my band and solo. I've played it in a alotta situations and it shines. I've used it for recording, both miced and plugged in, and got great results. It's got a bright warm balanced tone. just enough bass not to much mids.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Again I must say great, no problems here. The guitar was set up properly nice fret work and finish.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've had it about 8 months and played about 20 shows and a few recording dates and it has held up perfectly. It's my sole gig acoustic now.

Customer Support : 10
I've heard nightmares about customer support before I perchased mine. So I decided to check before I bought it. I like dealing with friendly, down to earth companys. I called and emailed with diferent questions, and I was able to get a nice, helpful person on the phone in 3 rings. I also had my email answered in about 24 hours. Great experience so far.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing profesionally for about 15 years. I don't play guitars because there cute, I play guitars that sound and feel good to play. This guitar does. I tryed out about 30 other major brand guitars in prices ranging from $200-$4000 and this guitar played and sounded better to me. It does not have the features those other guitar have, but it has what I need. Try it out to see if it suits your own needs. I will add, that it has a large/wide neck. If your young or small and looking for a starter guitar, look elsewhere. It's probably not for you due to the large/wide neck being hard to play. But the price to performance ratio is great.

Probably made in 1999 in Canada. Solid cedar top, laminated cherry back and sides, maple neck. Strictly acoustic, no pickups. Plain-Jane really but nice looking if you don't need ornamentation. Let me say that this review will be more critical than most. To read HC reviews you would think every guitar is a perfect 10. I like this guitar in a lot of ways but I am going to be objective. Still it was under $300.00 so at that price point it gets good marks for the nice top.

Sound : 9
Definitely getting better as I play it in. Warm, usually mellow, I use phosphor bronze strings from martin, usually lights although I have also used bluegrass strings which are mediums for the three lower frequency strings and light for the top three. Can be flatpicked hard and the sound is clean, doesnt break up.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 5
Action is comfortable but the neck is too thick feeling. Every Seagull I have played has a pretty thick neck but the neck on mine has always been uncomfortably clublike which compromises playability.
Fit and finish are o.k. for the main body of the guitar (good considering low price point.) The headstock is poorly finished in that it appears to be slightly assymetrical which is not the design. I have adjusted the truss rod some and may see if a skilled repairman might be able to make some adjustments to the neck for me.

Reliability/Durability : 8
I have played it a lot for the last two years and believe it to be a very durable instrument. I am not likely to ever perform so I can't say if it would hold up to the kind of abuse guitars endure on the road but I suspect I'll have it for awhile without much problem. I take it on hikes with my kids in varying weather and it stays in tune.

Customer Support : 3
Actually I have tried to call twice and emailed them twice to discuss my issues with the neck and have never had a response. On the other hand the store that sold it to me can't remember my purchasing it so...

Overall Rating : 9
Been playing for five years. Bluegrass mostly. This is my third guitar. Probably going to get something a little more expensive next time. This guitars strong suit is its sound quality. Weak link is its playability. Some Seagulls seem to be much more comfortable but I have seen some with obvious flaws in the workmanship so it is probably a crap shoot at this low of a price point.I get a lot of pleasure from it so it was a good thing I purchased it.

s-6 solid cedar top with laminated cherry sides, same description as above reviews. Made in Canada, and purchased 4 years ago. Most important feature, which some may think is a knock, is the Alcohol lacquer finish, which greatly improves sound ability in the top. (not honey dipped in plastic like most guitars in this range).

Sound : 10
Great deep rich sound, that far surpassed any guitar anywhere near this price range. This suits quiet picking or strumming for rock or country tunes. If you like the rich deep sounds, this cedar top model is for you. For a brighter sound, you might want to choose the spruce top model. A 10 rating for sound is relative to the price, yes you can get better sound, but NOT at this price.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Great fit, but set up was higher than I wanted, but with the adjustable truss rod, it wasn't hard to set up as I liked. Great bookmatch top. No flaws at all, and the payability of it at the store sold me as much as the sound.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Outstanding solid head and neck, tuners are seagull brand closed and are extremely reliable on my guitar. No reason to think that the hardware won't last. The lacquer finish allows for great sound and allows the wood to breath, but there is a slight trade off as it is soft and as you know cedar is a soft wood. Therefore, the top dents easily and can show the wear if you aren't careful. I've only a few nicks in so far, but it doesn't take away from it. I'd much rather have the sound than the look.

Customer Support : 10
I've emailed for catalogs and visited their sites lots as I was looking into (and then bought) a Godin SD electric. Support and commitment seem to be 100%

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing 7 years and this was my first guitar bought new. I learned on an old student model Mann for 3. I looked for a long time, and played lots of guitars in the 300-600 CAN price range, and this guitar kicked butt on the asian/mexican fenders and gibsons, etc etc, that I played. If you want a big name and crappy sound then buy those, if you want a hand-crafted solid top N.American made instrument for this price, you only have one choice. I love this guitar and company, as mentioned i bought a Godin SD electric last year (same company pretty much, Lasido).
If this guitar was stolen I would be really P.Oed and would go out and buy another seagull without even looking at anything else, but would probably spring the extra cash and get one with the electronics (LR Braggs with built in EQ) I played an Artist series model with Spruce top and mahogany sides/back and that guitar was amazing, a $2000 sound for less than $1000. (its on the wish list now)

Features : 6
Standard 2001 model S-6 - solid cedar top with laminated cherry sides and back and maple neck; binding on the top only; short scale 24.8"; attractive soundhold rosette; chrome 15:1 ratio tuning machines; tortise shell pickguard; and satin finish. Seagull lists its neck as 1.8" at the nut, but the string spacing at the nut is exactly the same as Martin & Taylor's 1.75" nut width guitars. The S-6 is a no frills, good value guitar. The execution of the features is good, so the 6 rating is simply a reflection of the lack of eye candy and other features that would drive the cost of the guitar up.

Sound : 8
I play mostly folk and christian music. The S-6 has reasonable sound quality, although it does not provide the clear note separation that a Martin OM style produces, it costs a fraction of the Martin's price. The S-6 is a dreadnaught and produces a large volume of sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I have had this guitar for about 7 months and it has seen daily action during that time. Stock action was a bit high for my taste. I like a low action similar to a Taylor and setting the S-6 up for this action was a breeze. My guitar was a factory second (indicated by the "F" suffix on the serial number). There were a few minor finish issues, but these were likely what made the guitar a second and saved me about $100. I have not noted any issues with the guitar's manufacture other than the minor finish issues.

The cherry sides and back are finished in a natural color and have really darkened up nicely since the guitar was new. I anticipate more darkening over the next 2-3 years. This darkening, which is a natural part of using cherry wood, will only improve the looks of an already nice looking guitar.

Reliability/Durability : 8
I do not gig but simply use my guitars at home. That having been said, I would not see any reason to believe that the S-6 will not have a very long life given reasonable care.

BAD STUFF - the saddle on my guitar literally crumbled in the first 3 months of use. We are not talking about the little grooves that appear under the strings, but pieces of the saddle actually falling off so that the action was significantly impacted. I use standard tuing, so additional tension was not an issue. I replaced the saddle with a TUSQ saddle and have not had any further problems with it. Because this is considered a wear item and easily replaced, I have not significantly impacted the rating in this category for this problem.

Customer Support : 1
As noted above, the saddle on my guitar crumbled. The S-6 uses a compensated saddle and I attempted to have mine replaced under warranty and ended up paying for the replacement.

I contacted my local dealer where I purchased the guitar. Its personnel indicated that they did not have the Seagull saddle in stock and were not interested in getting one. They would; however, fashion a new saddle from materials that they did have. As the saddle is compensated, I wanted a new compensated saddle that was engineered for the S-6, the dealer would not/could not comply.

I contacted Seagull which sent me a list of other dealers in the area and also indicated that they were switching to a TUSQ saddle (potentially due to the volume of saddle issues with the old material). I contacted the other dealers in my area and none indicated that they would perform the warranty repair because I did not purchase the guitar from them.

I then purchaed the new TUSQ saddle from TUSQ and fit it to my guitar. In October 2001, I sent the old saddle to Seagull with a request for a new saddle (so I could have a spare). I did not request reimburesment, simply a replacement part. In December 2001, I e-mailed Seagull and as of 26 February 2002, I have not received a reply to the e-mail or my mailed request for a replacement saddle.

Admittedly, the saddle is a relateively minor part and the total cost of the repair/claim submission was about $15. I am not disappointed that the original saddle was defective; however, I am MOST DISSATISFIED with Seagull's (Lasido) response, or lack thereof to the issue.

Overall Rating : 6
The S-6 is a good value guitar. It does not have the sound or features of a high-end guitar, but then it does not have the price tag of a high-end guitar either. For 10% to 20% the cost of a Taylor/Martin/Collins/Raingsong/ etc. the S-6 delivers 95% of the sound and playability. To achieve this, you give up on features. When you are recording do you hear the gold/abalone/inlays/etc.? Eye candy is nice to have, but it does have a price.

I would prefer that the S-6 had a longer scale 25.5". Additionally, the sound would probably be positively impacted by solid sides and back, but the pricing would go up significantly to cover the cost of materials and manufacturing and the guitar would not be the value that it is.

Overall, I am impressed with the value presented by the S-6; however, my rating includes a significant mark down for pathetic warranty service by both Seagull and its dealer network.

This has pretty much all been covered...plain jane dreadnaught with a cedar top...binding on the top...nothing fancy at all. I'll give it a 9 because it has everything it needs. After all, I wasn't paying money to get a triple bound with a fishman

Sound : 10
Sounds great! That's why I bought this guitar, because it sounded better than anything else in its price class. There were some guitars for twice as much that I liked better, but that wasn't my budget that day...if I was buying a guitar today I'd probably get a Seagull Artist model instead of the same priced Martins and Johnsons...in this price range, however, the other companies simply offer no competition. Not as bright as a spruce top, but that wasn't what I was looking for.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Needed a minor setup, but was pretty good from the factory. IF you don't like the soft natural finish top, then you boughht the wrong damned guitar. I personally like it.

Absolutely wonderful neck. The neck is what sold me.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Unlike some folks in this list, I play my guitar rather than beat the hell out of it. This guitar is very reliable and tough. It goes placse with me, it gigs, it's picked up a few scratches. I don't gouge big holes in the tops of my guitars.

Customer Support : 9
Seagull and it's sister, Godin, will respond to emails and take care of you. I also own two Godins and love them.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for several years...besides the Seagull and two Godins, I've got four Guilds and a Ric...I would get another Seagull in a heartbeat, probably an Artist non-cutaway spruce with the elctronics. My budget has gone up, so can afford a better guitar. The S6 is a fabulous guitar for the money. If you can afford better, there is better out there for sure. However, this is by far the best acoustic guitar I played that sells for under $500.

This is a 2001 Seagull S6 14-fret acoustic guitar, made in Canada. It has a solid cedar top, laminated wild cherry back and sides, silverleaf maple neck. Rosewood fingerboard with 16-inch radius. Semi-gloss lacquer finish. It's just a hair smaller than a dreadnought. It came without a pickguard, but I ordered one from Stew-Mac and put it on.

This is a no-frills guitar. It's very well built from quality materials, but you don't get a lot of abalone and mother-of-pearl inlays. Which is ok by me.

Sound : 10
The sound is why I bought the guitar. Loud, and the cedar top gives it a nice low end. I added a bone nut and saddle and ebony bridge pins, which added to the loudness and made it even a little fuller. I play mostly bluegrass, usually at home with my kids but with an occasional jam thrown in. This guitar is suited for that style because it has a good, strong bass. It doesn't have the throaty resonance of a rosewood guitar, but it carries well and sounds good with a fiddle and mandolin.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The action was a bit high when I bought it, but I dropped it when I added the bone nut and saddle. It has a 1.8-inch nut, which is just about right for me. I thought the fit and finish was good. When you look at the guitar, it gives you the impression of being well-built. About the best comparision I can think of is the old Ford Falcon car. When you looked at a Ford Falcon, you saw a car that was built for function and dependability, not flash. That's the way the Seagull is.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
I tend to baby my instruments, so I expect this one to last a long time. The only concern would be the finish on top. The cedar is pretty soft, I think, and would be easy to scratch and ding. My father-in-law is a pretty heavy-handed player, so when he visits, I may suggest he play the Epiphone...

Customer Support : No Opinion
So far, so good. The music store didn't have a warranty registration card, so I emailed Seagull. They said to send me their address and they'd get a card in the mail to me.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing about 10 years - started as a 40-year-old. I have a Tacoma M2 mandolin, a Washburn D-24 Limited Edition guitar and an Epipohone PR350 rosewood guitar.

I'm really happy with the guitar and would buy another one if this one were lost or stolen. For the money, it's an incredible buy. You're never going to confuse one of these Seagulls with a Collings or a high-end Martin, but I'm more than happy to play the Seagull and pocket the difference in price. It's a good player, it sounds good and there's some appealing about it's no-frills look. Far and away, it's the most guitar you can get for the money.

As all Seagulls, hand-crafted in Canada. Solid spruce top; the rest of the construction is the same as all the others listed... convenient strap button located behind where the fretboard connects to the body. The guy who sold it to me threw in a shoddy chipboard case with red lining.

Sound : 10
I haven't been playing for too long, but I play mostly classic rock and a bit of folk. All in all, it sounds great. It's very loud--I'm quite surprised I haven't yet been written for a noise ordinace since I often play at 2am in my dorm room. I have played some friends' guitars that were comparitively priced and then came back and played mine, and the Seagull is always better.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The action is perfect for a beginner... very low at the top of the fretboard, gets a bit high at the bottom, but nothing that shouldn't be expected.

Reliability/Durability : 8
My only complaint is that the non-laminated top is very susceptible to scratches... but then again, having scratches show people that you've actually been playing the guitar, and gives it character. =) Other than that, this is a very, very high quality guitar--hand-built and hand-inspected. I play for at least an hour or two every day and have never had any problems.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had any problems, so I really don't know

Overall Rating : 9
I looked at many, many guitars, including low-end Gibsons, Ovations, Yamahas, etc. The problem is that all of their guitars in my price range (<$200) are made in some factory somewhere in Asia by people who don't care about the guitar that they're building and where the concern is churning out as many guitars as possible, rather than quality. I have faith in my hand-crafted Seagull, and am not worried about it falling apart or anything like that. Furthermore, it was one of the very few guitars in its price range with a solid top, which greatly improves its sound quality. I've only been playing for a few months, but I am extremely happy with this guitar. I think that it was a great guitar to get started with, and have a feeling that it will last me a long time as I continue to improve.

2000 model made in Canada. (As one reviewer put it, sounds a lot better than made in Korea) Other reviewers have done a good job of describing the guitar - solid cedar top, laminated wild cherry sides and back, silver leaf maple neck, totally acoustic, satin finish. Nice seagull tuners. The neck is 1.8" wide, but feels real good to me. One thing many people leave out is that this guitar has a nice little herringbone rosette. Simple, yet elegant.

Sound : 9
I play whatever comes to mind from rock to folk to hillbilly to just messing around. Suits me fine. Has a real good balance to it. Enough bass without being too boomy and enough treble without being tinny. Plus it is louder than I thought it would be.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Setup was great off of the rack. Don't know if this was factory setup or done in the shop. Bookmatching is exceptional. Only real complaint is that the joint where the sides come together is just a touch rough.

Reliability/Durability : 7
Everybody seems to really be down on the cedar top because of it's fraility. Most people compare acoustics to electrics in durability which is like comparing apples and cannonballs. Any moron knows that when you are dealing with relatively thin pieces of wood, you have to take a little more care with it. Since almost all of my playing is around the house, and if I can keep my 6 year old daughter away from it, I don't see any problem with durability. Oh, yeah, comes with only one strap pin.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with company.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing off and on for about 17 years. I'm still not that great, but I use it more as stress relief than anything else. This guitar replaces a Fender Gemini III which I still have. My first recommendation to anyone upgrading guitars is to keep the old one around, at least for a while so that you can remember the difference!! I looked at a lot of guitars before settling on the Seagull. Most of them were pretty, but none had the tone that this one has. It is excellent for a solid top guitar under $300.00. This guitar suits my needs and is about 20 times better at being a guitar than I am at being a guitar player. Unlike some folks, I am not going to say that this guitar kicks butt on $1200 Martins or Taylors or Guilds. That is a different league altogether. However, I test drove Alvarez, Deans, Fenders, Epiphones, Ovations, Takemines and most everything else I could find in the under $600.00 range and thought this was the best by far. The two that also impressed me were an Epiphone AJ-45 and an Alvarez AJ-60. However, we were talking $595 for the AJ-45 (used) and about $450 for the AJ-60. I took the 'extra' money, put it in a hardshell case and still had money left over. If it were lost or stolen, I would definitely get another one. If I ever get the urge to upgrade again, Seagulls will be the first ones I look at. One last thing - I bought this in a music store which I feel is the best way. I could compare it to many other guitars and most of all get a good feel for the instrument. What pisses me off is to go into a music store and to have a salesman try to prove to me how great of a player he is by playing the guitar for me. I admit that I am not a great player, but I have worked out a series of things I do with a guitar to evaluate it. I do it the same on every one that I try. I prefer the folks that say "play anything you want" and then leave you alone. The guy at the Music Store was great in this respect. Also at the top of my list was Guitar Store of Tulsa where all they said was to make sure my belt buckle was covered up so that I wouldn't damage the guitars. The bottom line here is I know I am not that great, but if you try to prove it you will not be selling me anything.

I do mostly blues and folk. This one was salvaged from the pawn shop for $90 bucks. It has been rode hard and hung up wet. The neck was warped and still is somewhat, but with a humidifier it is getting better. However, despite this the guitar sounds wounderful, you can't tell it has a problem by listening to it. I like the bright tone better than any I have heard.

I do my own set up. This one needed some work, but nothing related to factory flaws. The finish is well scratched and it has three cigarette burns. I'm not playing for a fashion show and to me the condition speaks about how much this instrument was played. It was someones favorite working guitar for sure. The rating here relates to factory condition

has taken a lick'n and is still tick'n. I always use this instrument without a back-up and don't even think twice about it!

Been playing for 20 plus years. Own Yahmaha classical, '57 Martin, Sigma 12 string and a Strat.

I love this instrument! It literally jumped into my hands and took two strums to make my descision, even with a warped neck. I would buy all I could before everyone eles discovers how good these really are and the price starts climbing

Handmade, Canadian acoustic dreadnaught, solid cedar top (what a wonderful smell and sound!), lam. cherry b/s. 1 3/4" width neck, rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Alcohol lacquer satin finish. Great Grover style tuners and hardshell case. I gave it a 8 because it doesn't have all the pretties.

Sound : 10
I play a good variety of music, blues/country/bluegrass/folk and this guitar fits the bill very nicely. The cedar top gives it a really nice warm sound, warmer than a spruce/mahogony combo. Nice bottom end, though not equal to a Martin for bluegrass, but a wonderful tone for blues that easily equals a Martin. Very well balanced from low to high. When I purchased the guitar, it already had a pro setup, so I don't know how it is from the factory, but as well made as it is, I cannot believe it wasn't very well set up.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
At this price range, the fit and finish are far above any other guitar. The guitar easily competes with other brands that cost twice as much and more. My favorite part is the satin finished neck. It is a dream to play.

I originally bought this guitar to play at home and out at festivals. Since then, I have installed a Baggs RT ribbon pick up and end pin jack in it. I now use it for all band rehersals and about half of the shows we do. My other guitar is a Taylor 612ce Custom with the same pick up system. I find myself picking up the Seagull over the Taylor about half the time. It definately handles the road well, at least for me, and sounds great in a band setting. I play it without a back up when we play out, and do the same when out with the Taylor. I think it will definately last, it is a very solid guitar. The only thing to watch is the cedar top, which is softer than the usual used spruce, so it scratches a little easier.

The times I have dealt with Seagull, I have gotten very quick responses with the info I needed. Haven't had to have any warranty work, and don't think I ever will.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing 26 years, and have several guitars, this one and the Taylor, a La Patrie (Seagull with another name) classical, a Yamaha 12 string, two Fender electrics and a mandolin. This and the Taylor are my main two guitars, and I use them pretty equally. I've had this guitar for almost 2 years. If it were stolen, I would not hesitate to get another one the same day. I am also thinking of getting one of their S6+ Folk models as well. Seagull definately is one the best deals out there. I don't think I'll get another high end guitar, since I have the Taylor, and Seagull makes them so good for the price that I can't imagine paying more when Seagull already has it all at a great price. They are definately one the the best guitars on the market.

"Hand crafted in Canada." Sounds so much better than made in Korea, huh? Solid top cedar, wild cherry back and sides. Bought with used hardshell case. No electronics, pretty basic set-up.

I'm kind of a blues/blues-rock type of guy. Love playing acoustic Stones stuff, like "Sweet Virginia" "Love In Vain" etc. To me, this Gull is great for it. For the money, the sound is FAR better out of this box than guitars costing 1.5 x as much (you know the ones, lots of pretty inlays, drippy laquer finish, gold hardware, sound like plywood and fishing line).

Bought new, and set-up was not bad--action a little high. Took to pro shop and had them go through. Were a couple of minor buzzes (near the nut), had him put in a bone saddle for $25--great investment (for this or any other acoustic, for that matter). No flaws, looks like it's well constructed. Cedar top is kind of soft and easy to ding. Be careful.

Holds it's tune well, sounds good. I only play around this house, but if anyone outside of my house would ever listen to me, I'd feel comfortable playing it. My wife would be glad to have someone else have to listen to me, too. Can't say how it will hold up over time--only time will tell!

Customer Support : No Opinion
Haven't had any need to deal with them (bought new 1 year ago). Not sure about the warranty. I'm kind of a cynic, figure I'm screwed if I ever have something go wrong, so I never look at warranties.

Solid guitar. MUCH rather have this than comparably priced Washburns, Charvels, Ibanezes, etc that aren't even solid-tops, but "look real cool man!" I really love this guitar. I think it compares to the entry-level Martins (such as the DM mahogany). I've been playing off and on for nearly 20 years. If you heard me play, you wouldn't believe it. :) Just the same, I think I have a good ear for tone/good sense of value. This isn't a $1000 Larrivee and doesn't sound like one; but I have $600+ left over to spend on beer and office pools, and a nice guitar to boot. It's a great solid-top guitar for far less than five bills. Life is good.
