Silvertone S-65-M sunburst acoustic 000 body style. Body looks to be made of pine laminate, but I could be wrong. Neck looks to be the same with maple veneer. Again I could be wrong. I got this guitar at an antique store. I haven't found much info on it anywhere. It has virtually no features and most of the parts it does have I had to replace. Nut replaced with bone, bridge was cut down about half for lower action. The tuners work well but are old and need to be replaced. The braces inside were missing so replaced them and the sound improved. Fingerboard is painted to look like rosewood or ebony. It needed to be sanded with super fine grit sand paper and oiled. The frets are narrow but work, not a one is trying to pop up.

For a 000 acoustic made of pine plywood it is satisfying. A decent beater guitar for outside playing. It has low end boom to it and the high strings can be heard along with them. It's probably a better finger picking guitar than a strumming one, but strumming is good too.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 2
Action was really unplayable with the original bridge, which is just pine or maybe maple wood painted to look like ebony. Put it in a vise and cut it in half and now the action is really nice. Because the bridge is movable you can find the correct intonation easily. I found the scale length to be about 25 1/4. The pickguard is missing but was probably disposable anyways, the tail piece is sturdy and restringing is easy. The finish is just painted on. I sanded it off to reveal the beauty of the pine. It doesn't have a truss rod which is a real bummer because it is a decent guitar. I might put a screw from the inside block through the neck to secure it as the neck looks to be pulling away from the body of the guitar just slightly. Doesn't affect anything right now.

Reliability/Durability : 5
It's probably a fifty year old guitar but I'm not sure. It's made it this far and probably was never played much because of the horrible action and nut/bridge/tuners. With all that corrected it will get more play time and who knows how long it will last. maybe another fifty years?

It might have cost twenty dollars at the antique store and this guitar is worth at least that much. If you find one, take the time to set it up right and see how it plays and sounds. They aren't such bad guitars, infact many newer, expensive guitars at GC don't have the tone this one does. Of course the wood has aged and everything but because it is an antique and also a bit fun to play, it's a good value.

I've been playing for 26 years - mostly "lowend" equipment - owned a Gibson* here and there. As for classifying this Silvertone as "lowend," this is as good as "lowend" can get!
