This review is on a NOS Tacoma DF-28 made in 2004. It's all made of solid wood here in the US of A. Typical dread body style and 14 frets to the body. Top is Sitke spruce with very tight grain and back and sides are Canadian flame maple. Natural finish. Neck is made of beautiful streaked mahogany with dark tortise binding. Gotoh minis in gold for tuners. Ebony fretboard with "ginko" fretmarkers. Ebony bridge... Just like a DM-28, only with the maple flamed out body behind it instead of mahogany...

Sound : 10
Great loud bright tone. Different than mahogany body instruments, and really sings on high notes. Much louder than expected, and very happy with the overall sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Pretty darn well put together. Was looking for a nice maple dread, and Tacomas are alot of bang for the buck. This unit might well be a prototype, as a maple in the 28 series had not been a catalog item. The product line had been cut when FMIC took over control, and maybe this example slipped through the cracks? Small amount of clearcoat buildup in the inside soundhole area. No problems, though. Like other high end Tacomas: Great stuff.

Reliability/Durability : 9
I'm sure this guitar will do just fine over time. Can't wait to hear it open up over the next years.

Lifetime Warranty from FMIC. Shouldn't need it. Tacoma has been kinda spotty on information and contact, but down at the bottom line, I think they can be counted on.

Overall Rating : 10
Been playing since Nixon.
Very happy to have this unique guitar, and won't be giving it up soon. I have a DM-28 also, and like to compare the two for sound and playability. Overall, it's a killer acoustic for the money. I fear it wouldn't be affordable to reproduce this as a custom order, so I'll take some special care with it. It WILL get used, though.
