I also have the Tama 3557 however it is a 6-string. My dad purchased this guitar from a shop in Provo, in the '70's. (about as close as you can get, no serial number date reference). 20 frets, solid top, no electronics When he passed away my Mom kept it in the closet for a few years then gave it to me. OK, being rather critical here, "... I've tried a lot of good guitars in several shops, and none of them sound or play better than this old Tama...". The ratings and description of my Tama pretty well match what "Wheaties" wrote above on his 12-string 3557, so won't go into more detail except for the differences. On the ratings, I'd give all the categories a solid "10". Except for customer support which of course is non-existant since the guitar was discontinued in the late '70's. Sell mine for $50G? .... MMmmmmm, ...No.

Sound

I picked up a Dean Marlkey ProMag Plus soundhole pickup to hookup with my Peavey and it gives a whole different sound of course. I still like the original tone and sound with the pickup taken off, it's mellow and sweet. But for crowds you gotta have some volume and effects, right?
Action, Fit, & Finish

With a good maginfying glass, you could find no defects in the fit or finish. Even the interior is finished nicely although there is no surface applications inside that I can see.

Been played at for the last 25 years at least, it still looks as good as new.
Customer Support
:
No Opinion
"Boing". No customer support. But then, on the other hand, this guitar has never needed any customer support since the mid '70's, so that point is moot.
