I bought this '92 model in 1993 at Nadine's in LA. It's got the satin finish, dreadnaught body, grover tuners, flat radius neck, 20 frets and no electronics. Its pine top with mahogany back and sides, and a peg-less bridge. It's and acoustic guitars--so it has all the features I want in one--which is that it sounds great.
It's austere--like I want a dreadnought to be.

I've played a lot of guitars. I worked on the guitar floor at Guitar Center in the early 90s and worked as a guitar tech. I've played everything I could get my hands on. I have to say, that this is really one of the best sounding dreadnoughts that I have ever heard. I've heard it for 15 years now ;-) It has an incredibly deep, warm tone with incredible punch, but with whispy tones when I pick softly next to my girl at night. Great boom when I'm jammin' with the boys and stays in tune through anything.
You hear the timber of the wood, rather than the bronze of the strings--really amazing.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The action on this thing is ridiculously low. I've got to say, with 10's on it, I play it like an electric. I've had to redo the frets twice, because I can get Gilmour bends, SRV licks and Cray arpeggios on this thing.
The fit is perfect, the only problem I have is when I've mutilated the first 10 frets or so playing it like a Strat, I get a little buzz. All set after a redressing or fret replacement.
Finish. What can I say. I have the satin finish, and Taylor doesn't use it anymore. It looked nice initially, but a few years after I bought this guitar, I moved back to Boston from LA and humidity wasn't an issue. Yet, the satin finish still gums up and scratches WAY TOO EASILY. The satin finish takes absolutely no bumping. This is a house guitar (I have other guitars I gig with) and it looks like its been on tour with Aerosmith or something. Every touch leaves a mark on it.
However, given how excellent the fit and action are, I still love the guitar. The terrible finish should garner this rating a 2, but since it's paired with the perfect action, it gets a 6.

Never failed me yet. I always break the g-string, but frankly, usually change my strings before they break.
The hardware is fine, bridge and nut have held up nicely. Frets have been replaces a couple times, but I play it hard, to spite finger-style and extra thin picks (when I use one).
Then there is that finish problem. I'm a nervous wreck with I have students, novices of kids around my taylor because of the ultra fragile satin finish.
Because of the finish, I fear that this guitar will end up being a 15 or 20 year guitar instead of an heirloom. I'm already beginning to look at Martins and Gibsons as replacements when it is finally too beat up and needs to be refinished.

Can't get them to return my calls. I've called several times over last few years (when I start fretting all of the scratches and gouges that it accumulates because of the tissue-soft satin finish).
I would love to find out what they recommend for refinishing the guitar, if it will affect the sound quality, value, etc. But... no calls back.

I've played a bunch of Taylors from the Baby to the high-end concert series. I used a much newer 410 CE for a bunch of gigs and they all sounded great and played perfectly. However, I have only my own experience to go by and that is that Taylor is a really great sounding and playing guitar that simply won't last. I've played gorgeous 50 y/o Martins and 80 y/o Gibsons that sound incredible and have stood up to the years.
That is not the case with Taylors. At $700, this guitar can't be beat, however. Problem is, you can't get a 410 for that price anymore. I want a guitar that I'll leave to my kids in my will. Unfortunately, that isn't a Taylor, because of the disintegration of the satin finish and the very nice sounding (but real life-averse) tone wood.
I have recommended Taylors to students (I'm a music teacher) and others who were able to find a 410 or one or even a 310 for under a grand. I wouldn't recommend paying more, though--not for a guitar you'll need to replace within a generation.
However, this guitar is like a drug. It sounds and plays sooooo nicely, it's hard to imagine staying away from it.

My 410 was built in 1993 in Taylor's El Cajon factory, although I bought it new in 1994. It is a Grand Concert type body - back then the 410 was the least expensive Taylor available.
It is mahogany back and sides, sitka spruce top. Grover chrome tuners, pinless bridge, dot pearloid neck markers. It has a satin finish. The guitar came with a hard case that weighs a ton (I since purchased a styrofoam and canvas hard gig case). Came without a pickup or neckheel strap pin. I had Gryphon String Music in California put in the strap pin (they are Taylor dealers). Later on I had a Thinline pickup installed by Alto Music.
There is nothing fancy about this guitar at all, no abalone inlays or exotic binding or rosettes. But it has a nearly Shaker simplicity to it that I loved from the start. It's all about the neck and the sound with a Taylor anyway, everything else is just window dressing.
It has the typical nice thin Taylor neck with an 1-11/16" nut. Feels more like an electric than an acoustic neck. I had been used to an old Gibson J-45, which was like playing a tree trunk compared to this guitar.
Sound
:

This guitar has a surprisingly full sound for a moderately priced Grand Concert. Very clear and crisp on the highs and mids - especially if you keep the strings fairly new - but also quite satisfactory bass sound, surprisingly full.
I fingerpick and flatpick, and this guitar has a very good sound. I am a songwriter who plays folk and country style, and this guitar suited me well when I bought it. Probably a better fingerpicking guitar all in all, it has nice projection and does not sound harsh.
I had played a few different guitars of the same model, but this one won me over with its sound. It's a nice piece of spruce on the top, so maybe that's why.
12 years later, I am finding myself wanting a more deeper and rounded sound, so am stepping up to a Martin J-41. But for many years, this guitar suited me fine.
Action, Fit, & Finish

This guitar was set up perfectly from day 1. The low action was a dream and the neck just felt great. I was sold on this guitar by its neck. It was just a particularly well made 410, and as I said before, I had tried out a few.
The guitar had no flaws when I bought it. At this point, the action feels quite a bit higher and it probably needs some neckwork, but nothing serious. Not bad for the first time in 12 years!
While the 410 is not fancy, I was won over by how well put together it was. Finished to perfection, no rough edges anywhere, not a discernible drop of glue on the inside - it was built with care, despite being the lowest price Taylor at the time. It had the feel of a much more expensive instrument.

I've taken this baby on gigs, to song circles, camping and everywhere. It has been a real workhorse. It always sounded and played great, and was not so fancy that I had to worry about it constantly.
12 years later, the satin finish on the top has allowed for a few dings and nicks. The frets have not worn down, and I have played it quite a bit over the years. As I said, the neck needs some adjustment, but still very playable.
This guitar has been totally dependable and was my only guitar on gigs for many years.

While under warranty, the music store bozo who installed my Thinline pickup popped a piece of binding by the endpin. It was sent back to Taylor, who fixed it very nicely.
What's amazing about Taylor is that I have moved 3 times since buying this guitar, and they always find my new address to send me their very informative magazine. I would imagine that if I had a real problem, they would be responsive. They fixed the binding problem relatively quickly, and the repair has held up nicely for 12 years.

I am 46 years old and have been playing since age 12. The Taylor 410 was the first acoustic guitar I bought that was a really reponsive guitar. I've had Guild D-25s and D-40s, a Gibson J-45, an Ovation (don't remember much about it, except I hated it!), and lower priced junk before then. The dreadnaughts I had were more hard strumming type guitars, suitable to playing in bands, kind of loud and thuddy. The Taylor really had its own voice, and was a dream to play from the start.
I loved the fact that it had a big sound for its size. I was used to dreadnaughts, but they were starting to bother my neck and shoulders (I have disc and nerve damage). The Taylor 410 was much kinder on my body, and had a far more playable neck than the dreadnaughts. It also had a much better sound in the mid and high range, especially in the upper frets.
As my experience with guitars broadens, I'm looking for a more complex sound and feel from an acoustic, and have just purchased a Martin J-41, which of course is a far more expensive guitar (cost me $2400 used). But I will never forget the first time I played my Taylor 410. It was like meeting a great love! I just knew this guitar was for me. It made me a better player and we have had a great relationship for many years.
I was contemplating selling the 410 to help pay for the Martin, then felt incredibly sad about the prospect. I think I will keep it, and have some work done on the neck. I still need a guitar for knocking about, and I could never get the value for this guitar that I feel it is worth.
If you find a used Taylor 410 from the early 90s, then jump on it. It is a little-heralded guitar that plays and sounds great.

Taylor 410 made in 2001 in the USA. It is all solid wood with a spruce top and ovankol back and sides. This is a basic dreadnought with no cut-away or electronics and no fancy embelishments although, contrary to the Taylor brochure it has white binding on the neck as well as the body.
Sound
:
10
The ovankol gives a beautifully balanced sound with lots of bass but also a surprising amount of highs for a dreadnought. Several people have commented on how bright it sounds. It has terrific projection and is a delight to listen to. The sound is ideal for fingerstyle work.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The finish is superb and it came with a nice low action. I get all my guitars professionally set up and the luthier I use was very complimentary of the finish of this guitar. He did however say the spruce used on the top wasn't the best he has seen although it is very attractive and is starting to age very nicely. This guitar basically has no flaws.

I have been playing for 1 1/2 years and own 2 other acoustic guitars and 3 electrics. This is my best acoustic but not my most used as I find the size is just too big for comfortable "sit down" playing, which is what I do. This guitar would be better for stage use.
If it were stolen I would buy another Taylor but I would go for a 414 or 514 because they are more comfortable.
I love the sound and the finish of this guitar. I don't like it's large size. I wish it had a cut-away.

1995 Taylor 410
Spruce top, mahogany back & sides, mahogany neck and satin finish and Grover tuners. Great case, I took it all ove the world and it held up for a long time. I had a Fishman ThinLine Pick-up installed in it a couple of years after I bought it.
Sound
:
10
The sound on this guitar has gotten better every year. I been playing it live every week for 11 years and it never dissapoints. Since the guitar I bought did not come with a pick-up I had a Fisman Thinline put in right under the sadle. It does not have any EQ adjustments on it, but it does not need any. For strumming and finger picking the sound of this guitar is brilliant.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The action, fit & finish are great. The finish is simple so there is no worry about damaging a piece of art work like some higher end guitars. The finish around the sound hole has worn a little bit over-time, but that is to be expected.

I replaced the frets a few months ago because they had worn down from so much playing. I will have this guitar until the day I die and then I will pass it on to my kids.

I've really been searching around for a good all around Electric/acoustic guitar for about a year. . My criteria has been weighing the differences between sound quality, craftmanship, wood types, warranties etc; all of that boring but necessary stuff that go into trying to decide the guitar that was right for me. I should mention that my budget was around $1500-$2000.
I instanly noticed how the majority of the companies were all shooting for a general Status quo sort of sound that most would expect out of an accoustic Guitar. I also feel that most companies spent way too much money on asthetics and looks, sacrificing innovations and playablillity and passing on the lack of savings to the customer. I played on all different models of Gibsons, Alverez, Johnson's breedlove's, Larivee`, Martin, Deanmarkley etc.
The taylor's did not fit into this Catergory! The instant I pick one up I didn't want to put it down. The action was uncommonly good, the sound was symphonic in nature. It was a very piculiar sound indeed; Very full and bright. Almost too bright, but as long as plan on using this guitar for acompanyment style of strumming through the high's and lows you'll thoroghly enjoy the well blended sound.
I wouldn't reccomend this guitar for upper register playing, for the high end is too high and the low end is boomy low. A very extreme and user specific guitar. Very great for finger picking. Clarity drivin but not for a soloist; a real studio sounding chord strummer and and rhythmic style instrument. I would have gone witha a larivee` but the price was too high for what you get.
The Expression system is a true innovation in accoustic amplification designed by the man who basically invented the Mixer. Three pickups that are strategically placed throughout the guitar; each one having a specific frequency pick-up pattern and then blending the frequencies together for a fairly authentic sound. This is the real bread and butter of the 300-900 series Taylor guitars. It is the most realistic accoustic sound I have heard to date when amplified!!
If you want to have an accurate live accoutic sound without the use of a mic or a lot of equipment, then this is the guitar for you!!
For my playing style I give it a 10, but taking into considerations for how a lot of other people play the guitar I give it an 8, because this sound wouldn't work well for everybody.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
The 410ce is very well set up as far as action and playabillity. The body is a little bulky, so I preferr to stand up while playing. Very easy to adjust for the action style that best suits you. The "short Scale" resized neck reduces the tention of the strings giving them a not too tight but not too loose sort of feel.
the spruce top is coated but the ovakol sides and back are not. I am a little fearful on the ovankol getting scratched up, but so far it seems durable enough....so far. The tuners are very smooth. There are no weakness' here in this catergory so I will splurge and give the praticallities a 10! What can I really say I don't want to stop playing this guitar because of this catergory. Although my fingers give it a 1 because they hurt from playing too much! lol
Reliability/Durability
:

its durable but sort of expensive guitar for whats there mainly because of the cut away, expression system and the wood that they use. Get the Case. It's built like a brick shit house. It does stay in surprisingly good tune out of the case. I have bumped it on some hard surfaces a couple of times, but after screaming obscenities and uncurling my asshole I found that there wasn't any scratchs that have been produced as of yet! so it's rather durable. I'll give it an 8 Mainly because of all the warning papers reguarding cracks. evidently due to too much moisture or not enough moisture. Such as the nature of the acoustic guitar beast. But no problems so far!

So far everything is very solid and working correctly. The only dealing I've had to have with the company is sending in the warranty card.

Over all, I give this guitar a 9. It has expensive innovations and wood. The sound is un matched in my opinion, or at least it suits my cravings for the sound I want perfectly. But one side note or tip -I'm not sure which- is all of the 300-900 series guitars sound almost identical. So if you are not particualar on fancy inlays and exotic wood opt for the 300 series. It will save you a good chunk of change!!! For the price curve elevates quickly... The only reason I bought the 400 series is the 314-ce got bought out from under me and the sales guy felt bad and gave me the same price as the 300 series!

30 years. Gibson, epiphone, martin, rickenbacker, hofner, vox and fender amps.I would buy it again if lost or stolen.Compared it with ovation, tocama and guild and every taylor from 300-900 series.the 400 sounded the best out of all the taylors i played. This is a good guitar for the money in my case this is my beater upper don't care if it got scratched guitar.I take this on trips everywhere. It does not come close to my Gibson Hummingbird as far as sound and quality but my handmade gibson doesn't leave the studio. this guitar works well as a good sounding travel guitar. The only negative thing i can say about Taylor is all there instruments sound similar from the 300-900 series.some tonal variations due to different wood configurations and cosmetics but for a factory made guitar (non handmade) these guitars in my opinion are way over priced. The top of the line taylor sounded not much better than the bottom of the line 300 model. But they do have a unique sound unlike any other guitar.Bright and buzzy!Ilove it for what it is.

I have been playing for 40+ years and sound is all I really care about anymore.Pretty does absolutely nothing for me anymore.
I am at the age that $$$$$ has nothing to do with my decision to buy a guitar.
Any guitar can be set-up to personal playing preference but superior sounding "acoustic" guitars are few and far between.Every once in awhile however,no matter the make or model, all the wood, glue and craftsman ship comes together to produce something special.
When ever I visit a guitar store I will walk down the guitars [new or used] hanging on the wall and will open strum each guitar with a .80MM pick just to hear what it has to offer.
This 410 is an absolute "clarity cannon".It has the balance,"big" volume and sustain that matches the Larrivee '00[I think] L-01,Gibson '55 J-45 and Guild '74 D-50 I own and it has earned its place on the wall next to them.
This '95 410 took the place of a Martin CEO-4 on the wall.

Typical Taylor magnificent fit and finish.
Just a real nice "plain jane" guitar with a satin finish.
The action was magnificent when I bought the guitar. It is low and fast.I prefer "Elixir" Nanoweb lights and there is no string buzz no matter where I play on the neck.I have no idea if this is the way it came from Taylor or if a very good luthier has had his hands on the guitar.

I used to be a big Martin fan till i played this one and i was hooked. the only real knock is the cosmetic stuff. tuners are fabulous and so is the sound. If you can afford to spend a grand then do it. do not go cheap if you can help it. If it means saving a while longer then do it, you'll be glad you did!

This 410 was made in 2003.It is made of one of the most beautiful woods I have ever seen on a guitar(ovangkol)an african hardwood that has an almost 3 dimensional look about it.The top is of good ole sitka spruce. One of the most lively tops. The fretboard and bridge are made of ebony,a real nice feature(very expensive to buy).It sounds like I bought this thing on looks alone, but just the opposite;the sound is the first feature that caught me and what a bonous it happens to have beauty also.It comes with a very impressive piece of luggage also.

Well this is the main reason I bought this thing in the first place.I was in the market for my final accoustic and tried out quite a few.I play mostly country and some older rock and this baby can do it all.It can be played hard or stroked softly with no noticable difference. It is one of the brightest guitars I have ever heard. There have been complaints that they don't have enough bottom end.Well I beg to differ, because I happen to like the big boom of a dreadnaught and believe me this one has plenty. It is very loud and very clear at any type of playing.

The action was a tad bit high, but within minutes the dealer had it zoned in to play with ease.As I said earlier it is absolutely gorgeous,so bookmatching is fine.(not a real issue with me anyway).Absoloutely no complaints in the action or the finish(gloss top and satin back and sides).I will lower my rating to a 9 on this one because I heard that they come out of the box perfectly set up.Probably most of them do,but this one needed to be lowered a hair.

I am quite sure that this guitar can handle just about anything(normal use) you can toss at it.It seems very solid. When you pick it up there is a certain ridgity about it.After all this is a guitar and not a shop tool. You look after it and I'm sure it will look after you.I also own a Big Baby and although it seems very fragil,it seems to be holding its own.I wouldn't even consider a backup!!!!Not necessary!!!!

Have never had to deal with them. But have heard they are second to none.If their service is half as good as I think their product is I am not too concerned.By the way the warranty is lifetime(normal wear and tear). If I have problems my dealer usually looks right after me.Morris Music Saint John New Brunswick.Canada.

I have been playing off and on for about thirty years and always wanted a high end instrument.Well I know there are higher ends than this one,but believe me this one is high enough. If I ever had to replace it my only hope is that I could get one that sounds as good(and I'm sure they all do).I tried some other big name brands and have come to the conclusion that they are just living off their history. If you are ever in the market,do yourself a favor and pick up a Taylor(that's all it will take).I also own a Big Baby and it can hold it's own with most anything out there(less bottom end).I also own a Seagull M6 Gloss(great bang for your buck). As you can already tell this is a very satisfied and happy Taylor owner!!!!

Its Mahogany... so... its bright and very clean. My B and High E cut through very strongly. It lacks a thundering bass response. However, over the many years I've had the guitar, its become warmer and even more crisp.
Guitars need to age, so you can trust that my tone is what you'll end up with. the 410 is rich, and very bright.
10 - because you should buy a guitar with your desired tone in mind. This is what I wanted, and the 4 nails it down.

Bob Taylor is personally responsible for ruining me for any other neck. To some, playability is not an issue, and will suffer through thick necks...

ahh, I'm the original owner and sole player for my 410. So i know of its longevity.
Its a Acoustic guitar! Dont bang it, throw it, leave it out, or bump it. It will scratch, ding, and chip. Its wood folks.
I need a refret I think, and maybe a little neck adjustment. But in no way does it effect tone or playability. I've never had down time on this guitar. Its been with me everywhere i go. Just store it in its home, the Taylor Case, watch for humidity, and a lot of TLC.

Wonderful. Many of my band members and friends play Taylors, and those guys down in the El Cajon Factory know their stuff. If you ever need anything, they'll take care of it.
Oh, and get those Taylor Coasters made of Soundhole Spruce cut outs. Thumbs up to "Wood and Steel" the Quarterly Taylor publication.

I've been playing since I was 14 years old. And my 410 was my first "real" guitar. But i've run into some sweeeet instruments in my time. I've been within 5 feet of an James Olsen! And although I never played it, it deserves that sort of respect. Langiejans, Martins, Gibsons, and few other customs like Santa Cruz, etc.
To be honest, my 410 cannot compare to a freakin' Olsen! But then again, I dont want to spend thousands and thousands.
I would mourn for 30 days and nights with linens and ashes if someone stole my 410. Literally. But I would not buy a new 410. Taylor Guitars have changed throughout the years, and now the lower end models do not reflect the same level of quality that exsisted once. Instead, save up and invest in a 510 for mahogany, or a 710 rosewood. OR get the Doyle Dykes!
My next guitar: Custom w/ a Taylor neck(i havent found one yet!) or a Talyor 710C. Maybe Bob will bring back the 410s of old... :)

I've had my 1998 Taylor 410 modle for over a year. There are twenty frets on this guitar but no cutaway so you only actually get about thirteen or so. My 410 dreadnought has Ovangkol back and sides with a spruce top. This guitar has aged well even though its only about five and a half years old. There is no pickup . the fretboard is ebony and the neck is tropical american mahogany. I personally like the satin finish because the finish has a lot to do with the sound. The headstock is indian rosewood which is a little classy. Chrome plated grovers provide the tuning. The neck is thin. I got the brown hardshell case which is greatly durable. So features are alright. I only wish this guitar had electronics, if it had an onboard preamp it would be sweet...

The sound of this guitar is tonally progressive. It's not to loud, but of course there's plenty of depth to the instrument which gives it a broad consuming feeling. I like the crisp clean sound that this guitar provides. I thoroughly enjoy playing rythym which is great for the 410. I hear a lot about the bass in taylor guitar and think that this 410 provides a good amount of bass. I'm a high end person though... You can finger pick with this guitar, play some open end rythym, or just bar the chords and go hard on it because it provides you with plenty of sound. I use an acoustic Peavey amp (112) but would rather plug it into an SWR (or I guess, Fender now since they bought them out) Strawberry Blonde. Most of the time I go through a PA and depending on the PA, reflects the sound you achieve through the 410. Sound alone for this guitar is definately a 10. In all honesty, sound greatly depends on the musician, and the 410 is enjoyable to me.

I've beat it up a little, which really gives it more character and it's been suitablly durable over this past year. I know that's not a long time but it was constructed to last. I've played it live so many times and it's been very trustworthy. I've even been to gigs with it and only the 410, and don't have any complaints. I had a strap button put on the end of the neck and it's been solid as well.

I own two other acoustic guitars (one taylor and one takamine) and I own one electric (Epiphone Les Paul). Acoustic will always be my first love however. If i had to buy another guitar I would buy the 410 again or possibly a 500 or 700 series taylor. I absolutely love the tone wood used to make this guitar. It looks quality and plays quality. There are a few very minor nit-picky things that bother me but nothing inheritanly major.

It?s kinda hard to rate ?features? on an acoustic guitar, especially with no electronics, but it?s got all you need to be a happy guitar player for many years to come. The point of buying this guitar for me was to get back to basics, I sold my Strat, amp, pedals, etc. in order to afford this guitar, I do not regret it for a moment. Electric players spend so much time and money looking for ?the tone?. All you have to do is strum this guitar once and you?ll realize no amp or pickup will ever recreate these real vibrations. So I?m giving it a 8 on features even though to many it doesn?t have many. Although, if you look at what the guitar comes with, you?ll realize it has all the ingredients needed to make for a solid instrument. First off the wood selection; ebony fingerboard & bridge, Mahogany neck, Rosewood headstock overlay, Ovangkol (African hardwood) back and side (I never heard of it before this guitar) & a Sitka spruce top. Descent appointments; white bindings, Grover tuners, strap buttons (what a concept), tusq nut & saddle, pearl dot fret board inlays, gloss top and satin sides & back (the Ovangkol wood looks very nice w/ the satin finish. Of coarse it has the Taylor bracing system and other design innovations that have made Taylor world famous. Oh yeah it?s made in the good old USA and comes with a stout hard shell and has a lifetime warranty.

I like the sound of this guitar a lot. I really don?t know much about describing sound or how it compares to other guitars. I do know that it is clear and lively and to me sounds how an acoustic guitar should sound, most importantly ? it?d fun to play! (Plus it?s going to sound better every year it gets older)

I think Taylor guitars are the most consistent brand out there. Every time I pick up a Taylor at the guitar shop they seem to be set up perfectly. I asked the sales guy about this, he said that they come in this way and the shop doesn?t do anything to them. (Apparently Taylor realizes that first impressions are important to the $1000+ guitar consumer) The fit of everything is very nice, very well constructed. As others have mentioned it comes with 13?s stock from the factory, coming from the electric world that?s quite an adjustment. I?m going to stick with them for a while and see if they grow on me, if not I will change to 12?s. The action is a little high but I not screwing with the factory set up for the time being. This guitars stays in tune better than any guitar I?ve ever played, the Grover tuners as great.

The overall build quality of this guitar is great but I agree with others when they say that they feel the gloss is a little thin, to me the gloss is what protects your guitar from the world. I?m sure this helps the top resonate a little bit better, but you need to careful when handling this guitar. The finish is definitely not as durable as import guitars with super thick gloss, (We?ll have to see how the finishes compare in 20 years, ..oh never mind, by then the import will be in the trash dump, this one may have a couple battle wounds but it will still be kickin and sounding as sweet as ever!) The back and sides are satin finished, which typically is not as durable (as gloss) but this should not be an issue since the Ovangkol is a very hard wood. I think it?s as reliable as they come.

I?m trying to give an honest opinion and rating of this of this guitar. I know that most people are basis once they?ve bought something. I?m sure you can find people that would give a $200 import guitar a 10 in all categories. My viewpoint is that if everything were a 9 or 10 than there would be not need for the 500, 600, etc ?series. I plan on playing this guitar for a long time and I happy with my purchase. For people that live in the Detroit area I recommend that you check out Motor City guitars in Waterford, their prices are great, better that Guitar Center and MF! I hope this review was helpful, see ya.

Made in 2002, purchased in August 2003 - yeah, it hung on the wall for a year. Ovangkol back & sides, spruce top, mahogany neck; gloss top, satin finish elsewhere.
No frills at all (I expect binding and ebony on a guitar of this price). This is not a bad thing.
Came with an absolute TANK of a case!

Factory setup was "ok" - it hung on the wall for year remember. Strings were replaced (don't like the Elixir feel) and fretboard dressed; after that, very smooth playing.
It came strung with 13s, put 12s on with little degradation in the amount of bass.
Factory action set a bit too high for my taste. I'll be having a Fishman bridge p/u installed and the saddle shaved to lower the action. No buzz anywhere on the neck.
Tuning is excellent and the intonation well set - one of the reasons I was drawn to the Taylor line.
I have found NO flaws in the "F & F". another reason that drew me to Taylor. The book match is, well, "book matched".

Can't say much here about reliability as I've had the instrument for just a week.
The gloss and satin finishes "feel" thin to me - not a bad thing, I'm used to thicker poly and nitro.

Been playing for 35+ years, have various other brand (and non-brand) name guitars & amps, various effects and primarily play at church (non-traditional music).
Two things, overall, pulled me to the Taylor line: neck feel and tuning. I have big hands and the Taylor neck fits me very nicely (where the Martin neck doesn't). The other reason, tuning, is due to struggling with my other acoustic (S&P Pro Flame) to keep it in tune and to correct its intonation. I fully believe that my particular S&P has structurally failed over the last year causing the intonation and subsequent tuning problems. It's also gone "punky" on E-notes for some odd reason.

The 410 in my opinion is best suited for finger picking. I say this for sound only. The neck needs to be a little wider to accomodate for finger passages. I believe that when Taylor first started out they were trying to attract electric players with their thin necks. Being an electric player I was certainly attracted to the feel of the neck which is why I bought the 410. But finding myself playing in a trio at the "Spotted Cat" on Frenchmen ST. in NOLA I realized that the 410 has some shortcomings with sound and playability. My biggest complaint is that the sound compresses when you play rhythm hard on the 410. When I say compress I mean the sound gets mushy at a certain threshold. When you try to push the guitar for loudness it will only get so loud and when you do this it sounds closer to a muted banjo than a guitar. Using the lightest pick available will open it up a little bit when playing rhythm but sitting around a guitar circle it's hard to be heard when it's your turn to solo. Playing the 410 live has been an expensive endeavor to get it to sound like an acoustic through a PA system. Though I think any acoustic is an expensive endeavor when you try to make it sound what it is when you plug it in. I have a hard time staying put when I play on stage so I figured a condensor mic would be useless because I'd spend too much time concentrating on mic to soundhole distance that concentrating on playing. I gave up on trying to make the acoustic sound like an acoustic when I plugged in and just tried to settle for a pleasing sound. Also I was tired of spending more money after an allusive sound that I may or may not achieve. This is what I ended up with in my chain of goal oriented effects. The 410 was 1st plugged into a Sansamp Acoustic DI, then a Morley JD10 for warmth not overdrive, then to a Boss GE-7 EQ, then a TC Electronic chorus peddle, then to a volume peddle. I put a Dana Bougeois piezo and mic system in it and kept the slider towards the piezo side. I had another hole drilled for a Bartolini pickup but this was a fiasco. Though I liked the sound of the Bartolini I had tech problems. 1st... Bartolini clamps for their acoustic pickups don't fit on the Taylor 410. I had to turn them upside down and file away part of the plastic clamp to make it fit. The ploblem is the framework inside the 410 is very close to the soundhole where the pickup clamps go. The last straw was a loose connection at the input jack which cracked and cut out while on stage. I finally said the hell with it and ended up playing my Borys Jazz Solid electric and left the 410 at home. I'm now writing instrumentals on the 410. All finger-picking stuff which in my opinion is what the 410 was made for.

I originally had a 1951 Gibson but had to sell it for money reasons. That instrument was so terrific and great sounding, I still think about it and wish I had it back. But,after getting back on my feet and longing to play again, I went searching for a "good" sounding guitar. Thinking I could get something under $1,000, I tried a few but nothing sparked my interest. Then the salesman handed me the Taylor 410 and within two or three minutes I said "this is the one". The sound is full not "tinny". I try to difersify my playing so fingerpicking and strumming both come into play. I love the solid sound. I can't complain about the tone at all. Excellent... I only give this an 8 because I'm extremely critical and fussy.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
8
My only problem was that the factory setup and action was perfect, but I brought it in the store for it's new setup (to change strings and make small adjustments) and the guitar hasn't been quite the same since. I would say it was the setup guy that took it upon himself to make too many changes that didn't need to be done. I'm still working on getting it back to the original. So, my suggestion is not to screw around with the original factory setup too much. Let it be and play it for a while and then find a good luthier for adjustments if needed. As for the body, I think it was very well made.

And, the setup guy sort of screwed me up. Make sure you go to a reputable music store to buy a guitar. Even though Taylor might have good customer service, they aren't the ones you will be really dealing with hands on. If this Taylor was lost or stolen I would buy another, but at different store. I love the sound. My favorite features are the sound and the beautiful wood on the sides. I did compare this to Martin, Larabee and others, but in this price range they didn't compare.

My cousin wanted a guitar. I said, "Get a Martin. Get a Martin." He said, "No. I want a Taylor." I said, "Get a Gallagher, get a Santa Cruz, or get a Huss & Dalton." He said, "No. I want a Taylor." Well, he got one by mail, and after three days he returned it. Let me say first and foremost that I'm a flatpicker, and so is my cousin. This guitar sounded horrible for flatpicking. It had very weak projection, when you picked the unwound strings against the wound strings, all you could hear was the unwound strings. It had close to absolutely no bass. I suppose what sound was there was rich, but when he played it against my Martin, I mean you just couldn't hear it. The kid looked like he wanted to cry. Thank God he got his money back. I just wanted to warn all you flatpickers out there!

You can read the basics of this guitar below. My goal was to get an acoustic without dealing with cutaways or electronics or anything like that. The instrument was intended to be for personal satisfaction mostly, and I'm not a big fan of cutaways (who actually plays up there?) or the sound of most amplified acoustic guitars anyway. This guitar has all the features an acoustic needs. The look is simple and understated, though the ebony wood and neck binding are a nice touch which set it off a bit from other dreadnoughts.

So I spent an afternoon in a store specializing in acoustic guitars. I tried out everything in the area of this price range, from $750 to $1100. This means mostly Taylors and Martins, though there was another brand or two in there. Started with two Martins around the $1000 range, one with rosewood back/sides and one with mahogany. They were nice enough, nicer than any other acoustic I'd played (electric player for four years, very limited acoustic experience). I tried a Taylor 310, not impressed at all. So it looks like it's going to be the rosewood Martin until I run into another, cheaper Martin, with laminated wood for around $750. Notciably crisper than my current front-runner, with nicer highs. Maybe this is the instrument. The store clerk, who had been appearing occasionally to check my progress, offers a Taylor 410 from the wall. This instrument had not been considered, it was on the highest end of the price range and I hadn't liked the 310. I sit down and play for a minute. Now I see what was missing from those first two Martins. Their highs were subduded at best, and if you laid into the bass strings all the way you ended up with mud, no note-to-note definition at all. I had almost made the mistake of buying a guitar that would have forced me to hold back sometimes. This Taylor was completely different- the highs shimmered gorgeously, and the bass responded at any volume with piano-like definition. Honestly, I have no understanding of midrange in acoustics, but I'm going to trust that it's there and that it's good. I did a blind A/B test of the Taylor and the cheaper Martin, the Taylor won for having the same general sound but fuller and more complex. By instinct I focus on highs more than lows, and this guitar just shimmers. Lovely. Now when I go to music stores I play the most expensive acoustics I can find, and I'm still satisfied with my midrange Taylor. 10 - Although I know that there are better-sounding guitars, probably not for this money.

Been playing for 4+ years, also own a Fender '72 Tele Thinline reissue and a Fender Prosonic combo, plus assorted effects. I play indie, blues, and classic rock, pretty much anything that's interesting, challenging, and fun. This guitar was purchased specifically as an instrument to take to college (no Prosonic in a dorm room!), and if it were stolen I'd be mighty pissed as I went to buy another one. I feel kind of silly giving this thing all 10s, but that's how I feel. I've made it a point to play acoustics since buying this every chance I get, and not once have I said 'gee I'd like this one more.' Though I still love playing electric, there's something honest, trustworthy, and comforting about an unadorned dreadnought, and for the money you're not going to find a better one of those.

I tried several guitars in this price range before deciding on thhe 410. I liked the sound of the Martin D1 but the workmanship seemed a little shoddy. I also considered the Gibson Gospel but thought it played sloppy.
I think the 410 is a lot of guitar for the money.

This 2001 Taylor 410 has all I could ask for. Sitka spruce top, Ovangkol back and sides, ebony fingerboard, Grover tuners, great hard shell case. The Ovangkol is mottled and has much more character than most tone woods. I think Taylor has a winner with that wood. It has everything I want in an acoustic.

Rich, full, consistent sound down full fretboard. Not as bassy as some, but I don't play in stadiums. Sound very even. High E never sticks out like it does with many acoustics.

Action great. Very easy to play. I also won Guild, Martin and Tama guitars and this is hands down the easiest to play. Changed strings the first day I had it and everything worked fine. Took me a half hour, which is about as quick as I do it.

I only recently purchased it so it's hard to say. However, some fret over satin finish, but not me with Ovangkol. It's so hard that the satin feels totally differnet than the satin on, say, the Martin mahoganys. I expect this will be a rugged performer.

Been playing off and on for 30 years, much more seriously in last year or two. I made a lot of progress with my Martin, but this guitar seems to be taking me to new levels. And as another reviewer said, the smell of the Ovangkol is awesome. Taylor really is on to something with this wood. "mottled" like the nose of an appaloosa horse. (bet you didn't read that in another review.

I bought my Taylor in 1999 but I believe it was made in 1997. It is a 20-fret beauty w/ ebony fret board and bridge. The bridge is the string thru type and it the guitar has a satin finish. It has a sitka spruce top and ovangkol back and sides. It is a very basic standard dreadnought w/ chrome grover tuners and comes w/ a very nice skb hard-shell case

I like to play anything and everything from blues to bluegrass; I mostly play folkish style music w/ my father and uncle. The guitar is a whole lot more versatile then I am. I think it would sound good w/ any type of music (within reason). It has a very bright rich full sound and a very distinct tone. The guitar really projects sound quite well and has plenty of bottom end. I haven?t played many guitars that sound as good as this one, not even other Taylor?s.

The guitar was set up perfectly when I got it; I don?t know it that was done at the factory or at the place where I bought it. The action is low but there is very little if any fret buzz. The top is book matched quite well but not perfect. It seems to be really well made and the bridge setup is outstanding.

I did not get any papers w/ my guitar for registration, and have had no need to contact the company for anything although I think I need to try and register it soon. The store I bought it from (Strings in Things in Memphis) is one of the worst music stores I have ever dealt w/ as far as customer support. I got a good price on the guitar but I can?t even get anyone to wait on me to buy strings in the place.

I have been playing guitar for over a decade now and I also own another dreadnought (my first one which is a kay). I have an Alvarez classical guitar, a Kramer bass, a Gibson Les Paul smart wood and several amps, pedals etc. If this guitar was lost or stolen I would by another Taylor but I don?t think I could replace this guitar ever. Even thought it was manufactured it is still a one of a kind guitar. I have thought about adding a thin-line pickup to it but I am afraid that might change the guitar and I couldn?t stand that. In short this is one of the finest guitars I have ever played. It easily ranks up there w/ the Martin?s and Gallagher?s that I have had the pleasure to play on. In short, if you are looking for a good acoustic guitar give Taylor a long hard look, you might not be able to find anything better but always buy the one your heart tells you to buy.

Built in 82, the last year before Taylor bought their CNC machine, so still carved by hand. Solid mahogany dreadnought, solid spruce top, long scale, simple electronics, dot inlays. Nothing fancy, just what you need for tone.

This is where it gets wierd. I've played most things you can find out there-spent an afternoon at Gruhns playing everything he had, several afternoons at Daves Guitar shop, plus high end stores across the midwest. I find myself gravitating towards high end Froggy Bottom and Santa Cruz. The only reason I ended up with a lower end Taylor was a trade. The sound is hard to describe, it's a swirling, midrangey sound with lots of bass and sparkle. Not has hard as a rosewood Martin, not as warm as a Maple Gibson, just an incredibly rich tone that suits well for fingerstyle or flatpicking and records beautifully.

A flatter neck than a modern Taylor, great action, slight upbowing of the body behind the bridge but still very playable (no neck reset needed, and even when it is, it'll be easy with the bolt on neck). It's worn and played and looks every bit the part of a 20 year old acoustic...

I think the tremendous sound of this guitar would suit most any style, as it is very versatile.I tend to have a little more of a heavy strumming style and generally run it through a sound system.I am a song leader for our worship team at our church, and using the sound system,it very easily fills the room.In my opinion it has outstanding resonance with very clear intonation and a rich, full sound.I do however feel that as the strings begin to age a little it becomes very ordinary sounding rather quickly. It takes 7 to 8 years for a guitar to reach it's full potential in terms of both sound volume and quality,so since I have only had this guitar a little over 3 years,I know it will continue to get better and better.I was very impessed to be able to get scalloped bracing in this price range-but then all Taylor's include this feature.

In my opinion this guitar seems as though it will be very durable long term, that is one of the reasons I selected it.Taylor is the only manufacturer in the world that uses ebony on the fretboard and bridge, and ivory tusq on the nut and saddle,on every guitar they make. This guitar withstands live playing very well and the hardware seems to be very durable. The satin finish is a bit of a concern,so far it has been very durable, however how it will hold up long term remains to be seen.It would be nice to have a gloss finish, but I guess to get a guitar of this quality,at this price range, you have to give up something. My 410 has been extremely reliable and dependable!

10, becuase anything else is not needed. It had all the features a good acoustic guitar should. Don't be putting any electronic crap in my acoustic, wood is all a great guitar needs. The Ovangkol sides and back have a very nice grain and slight webbing, very nice. I could do without the bearclaw on the sitka spruce top, but it adds character. Who cares if the tuners aren't gold plated, did oyu buy your guitar to look at it or to play it. The new 410s like mine, a 2000, have a bound neck. Binding is about the only extra feature I go for, because its easier to fix a chip or ding in a bound neck than have the whole fretboard redone. It came with a hardcase.

That last guy must always play jumbos because this puppy has bass. Tons of it for a dreadnaught, more than my Guild JF30 or any martin. This thing puts the sound out there. You can even get good volume fingerstyle if your fingers are strong enough. Play this thing in open D and it is very boomy. Good for folk, rock, country, celtic, etc.

The action measured out exactly as the Taylor website said it should. It is so good that medium strings fell like lights. My repair guy looked at it and asked me how bad it buzzed, but it never has. The new neck design is very tight.

The gloss finish on the top is a little soft. The bindings will take the brunt of the punishment and can be easily replaced if need be. I don't use the strap buttons because I play seated. If I played in one tuning I could gig woth just one guitar, but I usually take this one and National resonator for my blues gigs.

Unlike the last post, I got my affirmation of warraty registration right away, as well as a video. I also get a Tayloer newsletter each month or so, as well as invitations to clinics that Taylor holds at music stores around the country for their customers. When you buy the guitar there are many pamphlets inside the case telling you how to care for the guitar. I feel very strongly that Taylor is a great company.

Talk about a bargain. Yes there are other all solid wood acoustics for less dinero, but none have the little touches like a bound neck, or a deluxe case. The time and effort Taylor went through to design and build these guitars is well worth the money. Much better than a guitar desinged to make a quick buck off extra lumber like some other previously mentioned company (cough, tacoma, cough). A new Taylor is like what a Martin used to be before the decided to become a huge corporate moneymaker. Here's the kicker, the satin finished ovangkol smells like cocoa, mmm mmm good.

2001 model (Ovangkol; yes --- there is a "g" in the correct spelling of this West African wood)--- back and sides with satin finish
solid spruce top (glossy finish), not all that well bookmatched
standard off the shelf features and tuners, no electronics
neck / headstock fingerjoint is much too plainly visible
nice binding (white "ivoroid" [plastic])on a wonderfully playable neck
non-beveled edges to the cutesy Taylor pickguard annoy me a bit
precision fit plastic case is very nice indeed
can't say I much like the appearance of Taylor's "smiley face" bridge

I play primarily folk and folk/rock (I've never much liked that latter "hybrid" description). Some fingerstyle, mostly flatpick.
When I purchased this guitar from a small local shop on something of a "got some extra cash" impulse in late August, 2001, I was drawn to the clear, "woody" sound and the ringing sustain of this guitar. However, once back in my own familiar sound surroundings, I promptly started asking myself "Where's the bass?". I've been asking myself that same question ever since. Compared to my Martin SPD-16R (of comparable cost), the Taylor 410 doesn't have much discernible bass / low end at all, a shortcoming which will undoubtedly lead me to part with this guitar in the months ahead. Too bad too ---I sure do love the feel of the neck, but ---no bass, no keep.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
7
Action is fine, although the higher profile frets (i.e., compared to Martin)are noticeably different to me and take some getting used to. I experience some fret buzz on one fret of the low E string, but that might be my own imperfect playing style --- I have not yet had a luthier take a good hard look at the instrument, so I am not prepared to blame the factory set up. The construction of this guitar leaves very little to be criticized, although I admit I dislike the Taylor pickguard (and bridge shape). The top spruce pieces are not all that well bookmatched either. The Ovangkol is unique and lovely to me.
Reliability/Durability
:
No Opinion
Having owned this guitar for only a few months, I am not entitled to an opinion on its long term durability. However, it is clearly very well made. I didn't particularly want a strap button (but it's there pre-installed anyhow, like it or not), but the strap button is clearly solid and secure. I'd be surprised if there was to be any reliability issue with this guitar down the road. I won't be keeping it, but certainly not because of any concerns with its durability.

Well, I completed and submitted the (non-transferable) warranty papers to Taylor immediately upon purchase --- over three months ago now.
I received no acknowledgement of any kind (Martin provides its registered owners with a dated owner's card identifying the instrument by model, serial number and name of original purchaser in about a week, just by way of comparison). Also, I have yet to receive a single copy of Wood 'n Steel, Taylors publication which is supposedly sent out to all registered owners --- but you couldn't prove that by me, having never received a single one.

I've been playing guitar for about 32 years (I'm a competent player, but I make no claims to expertise or artistry). I likely won't keep this guitar. It's very solidly constructed and I love the feel and playability of its neck, and I like the clear, ringing sustain. But I expect more bass out of a dreadnaught. Low end tone in this guitar is more a rumor than a reality. Whether it't the hardness of the Ovangkol (which is 102% as hard as oak), I don't claim to know, but it just plain lacks the tonal warmth I expect (demand) from a dreadnought. I also don't like the smiley face bridge or its cutesy pickguard either, but it's the absence of low end tone which is the REAL issue. I'll probably sell this 410 and replace it with another dreadnaught --- a Martin, model yet undetermined --- but with solid rosewood back and sides, spruce top. I really and truly wanted to like this Taylor 410, but for me it just plain doen't cut it tonally. It's not about brands, it's about the tone --- it's always about the tone......

It definitly has a full, bright sound like I haven't heard from any other. It also sounds good as a lead guitar and has no problem cutting through the jam room even when playing just single strings. This is a standard dread acoustic guitar. This guitar was made in 1994 and has an aftermarket Fishman acoustic matrix pickup installed. One great thing about it is that the bridge is similar to an electric in the sense that instead of pulling out those pain in the ass pins out you string it straight through... Came with the original Taylor case, the nice one before they went to the molded plastic. The guitar fits perfect making me feel safe when lugging it around with me. Came with brand new capo and humidifier. this guitar was actually never even played until late 1999 when the person I purchased it from made a trade with a dealer. This guitar has minimal wear, in fact the body has no scratches, unlike the brand new 410's I played in music stores which already had minor pick and belt buckle scars...
Sound
:

The sound that this Taylor 410 belts out is beautiful. It's full but doesn't get bogged down in the bass realm. It has great highs and lows. The pickup sounds good but you need to get the Fishman eq or else you'll spend all day trying to adjust your amp so that it doesn't feedback. Normally I play it unplugged but when I plug in I play through an Ampeg Reverb Rocket with 2 12's. It sounds good but like I said, without the eq you spend a lot of time farting around with knobs... I like to play not adjust knobs. But back to the guitar. This guitar actually beats the hell out of a new 410. I played both and I fell in love with this one. It ripped and was much fuller and heavier.

the action is perfect. No buzzes even when really hammering on it. I play with a pick mostly but play light. even when really banging on it you don't hear annoying buzzes. The body looks good but there are no bells and whistles. It's very standard looking and not flashy at all. then again, flashy is a waste of money. I paid for sound. the action, fit and finish are all perfect, no complaints what so ever.

I've had this guitar for about a month. It's heavier then a new Taylor and I think it would be fine for live gigging. It will stay in tune for an entire show, that I'm sure of. Unless of course you are switching up tunings. Anyway, this guitar has a button on the neck and I'm not sure if it's original or not. either way, I feel safe with a strap on since they are real solid. I don't have a backup acoustic right now but I'd feel alright without a backup. Easy to change string set up makes it optimal for giging. Finish seems thick enough but come on, does it matter? have you ever seen the Woodstock film with Richie Havens? His guitar looks almost warped from wear and he still rocks. worry about songs, not scratches and finish.

Have yet to deal with Taylor but they sent a free video about the neck process. I emailed once with a quick question and recieved an answer same day. Let's see, Gretsch never got back to me but did send a booklet that didn't answer the question. Dean sent me the wrong answers and told me they didn't know where in NJ their guitars were sold... Guild told me they couldn't help me because the Guild I have is too old... Yeah, a 1979, a real dinosaur... Taylor seems better then most.

I've been playing guitar for about 7 years. At the present point in time I have a Guild S70d, a Univox Les Paul rip off, various pedals, an ampeg reverb rocket with 2 12"s and some other random stuff. If this guitar was stolen I'd be bummed. This is a beautiful 1994 piece and like I said above, it sounds better then a new one, by far. The neck is smooth, fast and sweet, the action is perfect, the sound is rich and full and it looks like a nice guitar. It's not fancy so if you are going for looks stay away from this one. I wanted a guitar that sounded good, not that was expensive because it had gold tuners, fancy inlays, sound hole designs and the like. To me, all that stuff is a waste of money. it doesn't enhance sound or play in the least. I compared this to everything under the sun and as far as bang for the buck, it kicked everything else's butts. The Tacomas were nice but couldn't hold in comparison. The price I paid was perfect for what I got. This guitar stays in tune hardcore and sounds sweet. I wish it had a better player as an owner but all in all I can hold my own...i'm no jimi but then again, who is? If you have questions, email me at backtotheearth@hotmail.com and I will tell you how great this product is.

Well i just like to say that this is one of the best sounding acoustics ive ever played. After i played it at the store i had to buy it. And i think its one of the first peices of gear i bought that sounded better once i brought it home. It has a big open natural sound. Like an acoustic should sound. Its the sound ive had in my head so i bought it

Excellent for fingerpicking, lead and chording o Very Rich Full
Sound!! I had read all of the reviews and I got the impression that
the 410's (mahogany back/sides thru 1997?) was un-naturally bassy - to my ears is is perfectly balanced with great bass end. What a sweet guitar!

Factory setup is very, very good. Normally I would never consider
owning a guitar without having it setup and tweaked - but this one
is darn close. The only thing I can think of is that the fret ends
are a tad bit sharp - needs smoothed out - leaves me giving it a 9.5.

Spruce (?) top, 95 model I believe, Ovangkol sides and back (whatever that is), 6 Grovers, Satin finish, dot markers. I dig the string-thru-the-back-of-bridge thing instead of the 6 pins. You can change strings way faster. I'm more of an electric guy, so I'm not quite up on all the different acoustic guitar woods and construction. All I know is that it works.

Ah, this is what sold me. I bought this used and as soon as I plucked my first chord, even on strings that were over a year old, she sang like an angel! Keep in mind, this is near their bottom of the line, but it blew away most of my other acoustics - except my Taylor 814 CE which costs around 3 times more. Nice full sound, very balanced tone, bright but not steely, nice low end without being boomy. For the money, it blows everything else away.

Mine was used, but very well set up. I thing the satin finish enhances tone on inexpensive guitars like this. Don't use regular guitar polish on this, as it may mess up the finish. I say guitar polish is for sissies anyway.

I bought this primarily for recording. It records great and time will tell if it holds up, but I suspect it will, as all Taylors are work horses. I would not hesitate to use this on a Bruce Springsteen session in a burning barn. I also like having a truss rod I can adjust, unlike some older Martins I've had.

I know some of the people at Taylor and they will always be there for me, which is one reason I like their guitars. They're not like one of those dot com companies that'll put you on hold till the cows come home. Real geetars made by real people.

I'm a professional. I play in a band called the Hellecasters and am primarily an electric player. But I own about 7 or 8 acoustics and this lowly 410 makes the other non-Taylor guitars cry for mercy. If someone stole it, I'd hunt them down with my Colt AR-16E, tie up the bastard, and make them listen to Elton John singing duets with 'N'Sync till their ears bled.

I purchased my Taylor 410 in April 1997...after four years of searching. It has a solid spruce top...satin finish...crafted in Southern California. I should have bought it with the pickup installed.

I finger-pick and play acoustic rhythm guitar...it works well for both styles. I had a Fishman acoustic matrix pickup installed a year ago. I'll run it through a PA either straight or with a multi-effects acoustic pedal. The sound is incredible...perhaps the best all-around guitar I've ever played. I can't discern a difference between my Taylor 410 and guitars costing upwards of $4000. It has very bright highs, booming bass, and excellent resonance.

I've been playing for nearly 20 years. I also own 2 Fender P-basses, an Alvarez acoustic, Seagull 12-string acoustic (another excellent value), Fender Squier Strat, Yamaha PA and Keyboard (among other misc. stuff). If it were lost or stolen, I would cry...I'd get another one, but with the electronics built in. Its sound is its best feature. I compared it to more expensive Martin, Guild, Takamine, etc...this guitar had a little something that the others didn't...it "spoke" to me. All Taylor 410s (and any guitar model for that matter) aren't the same...I could discern a difference between the one I purchased and another 410 sitting next to it. If you're looking for a high-end guitar, check out Taylor's "low-end" line up. You get a lot of guitar for the money...I can't hear an appreciable difference between my 410 and their more expensive guitars (like the 810)...that's my opinion.

2000 Taylor 410; Solid Sitka Spruce high gloss top with satin Ovangkol (similar to rosewood) back and sides with white plastic binding on body and neck. Ebony neck and bridge. Strap button in neck. No electronics. Grover chrome tuners. Came with factory installed Elixer medium gauge strings, which I really like. Tusq nut and saddle. Came with a decent hardshell (SKB) case, although you have to be careful not to hit the exposed edges and nick the binding.

My style is fingerstyle (James Taylor, David Wilcox, Steven Curtis Chapman) and not too heavy strumming. I play in a small Christian worship group and externally mic it through the church's system. My playing partner has a 70's Guild D35 with Fishman Natural 1 and the Taylor sounds great up against it.
The sound out of this guitar is nothing short of amazing. It had the open, airy sound of a Tacoma, but with the clearer definition, low-mids, range and sustain like a Martin or Gibson. I found myself drawn back again and again to the Taylors when trying these other guitars.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

Set-up was perfect. If I hadn't seen the Taylor video, I might not have known the top was bookmatched it is so well done. There is nothing poorly done in the construction. I would have preferred a gloss finish all over, but this is the second from the bottom of the line. But, on the other hand, you have to get well up some of the other lines to get ebony fretboards and bridges. The action, especially with the Elixer strings is like liquid. I find I'm going where I'm supposed to with no effort or thought -- and I'm not THAT good. It's definitely made me a better player.

Taylors are sometimes considered less durable (or more delicate) than, say, Guilds. I tend to treat things carefully anyway, especially such a fine instrument, but have no reservations about its durability or reliability. I have only had it since April (the same month it was made), but I plan to follow the recommended humidification in the winter. Right now, I keep it in the case when not playing, but I play it nearly every day. I only give it a 9 because it doesn't have that heaviness of a Guild or Gibson.

Haven't had any problems in the several months I have owned it, but all contact with the company has been enjoyable. I asked for some tech sheets on amplification and the sent me EVERYTHING, including the material on humidification and adjustments that came with the guitar.

I've been playing for about thirty years, off and on -- mostly off. Taught myself piano from guitar and concentrated on that for a while. Got back to more serious guitar playing with this praise group and fell in love all over again, especially after shopping for and buying this Taylor. I replaced (traded) a 1974 Yamaha FG-360.
I had originally purchased a Taylor 310, but asked if I could have a full credit if I upgraded within a certain time period. I called within a day or two and ordered the 410. The 310 was fine, but the white binding, fuller tones (yet still bright), and more substantial feel of the 410 was more appealing. Plus, I confess there was something about the bottom of the line that my ego grappled with. For the extra $200 I'm much more satisfied.
I played this against similarly-priced and higher-end Martins, Larivees, etc. and the results were amazing. A great value. If abalone, gloss, gold tuners, etc. aren't critical, this sounds as good as the 810 in my opinion.
I was close to getting a Guild DV52. It was in the same price range as the 310 and 410 (closer to the 310) and it had rosewood, white binding (body), and abalone soundhole rosette. It felt more solid, but just didn't have that Taylor sound and feel. As I said earlier, this has made me a better player. I love playing and practicing. There is nothing I would change except for cosmetics, but you can go up one level and get that (500 series) if you want.

1997 Dreadnought 410, no electronics. Features include: Solid spruce top, solid mahogany back and sides(new ones are in ovangkol), mahogany neck, chrome Grover tuners, b-w-b-w-b binding on top, no neck binding, pinless bridge, nice plastic hardshell case. Satin finish. Pretty straightforward mahogany dreadnought. I have to rate this guitar a six in this category, because it only had slightly above average features, like the nice binding and case. The rest of the features are pretty average. The quality of the spruce top is nearly identical to that found on the Tacoma DM 10, and not as nice as my 1998 Martin D1. Yes thats a D1.
Sound
:
4
The dreadnought suits my style when I am not finger picking, or playing acoustic blues. The 410 is a rythym guitar. It is very responsive to subtle changes in attack. The sound is strong in the low end and somewhat stronger in the mid-range. The high end is not very good. It has a rather degraded high end, a little weak and not very clear. The sound balance is tipped very far in favor of the mid-range to the detriment of the high end. In comparison, my 1998 Martin D1 has a better overall tonal balance, clearer highs, and quite noticably greater sustain. The Martin D1 is also substantially louder than the Taylor 410. I compare these two because I owned the D1 for three years, and I paid exactly the same price for the Martin new (740 inc. shipping) that I paid for this Taylor used. The D1 has a satin finish, mahogany body, however it has laminate sides. It is a noticably better guitar than this Taylor 410. I would have to rate this Taylor a 4 in this category, because of its sub-par tonal balance, and the fact that a lower priced Martin with laminate sides sounds louder and clearer, with better toanl balance.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
5
The top was properly bookmatched. However, the choice of wood is nearly the same, as stated above, as the substantially cheaper Tacoma DM 10, and not as good as the Martin D1. The interior of the Taylor 410 is absolutely clean. No spare glue, and no poorly carved braces. I can see a very small amount of glue under the satin finish at the edge of the fretboard where it meets the spruce top. The binding was well laid. The nut was well cut. The action is typical Taylor, low and easy, with no fret buzz. The fretwork is fairly clean. There is nothing outstanding to say about the fit and finish of the Taylor. It is absolutley average as far as what you'd expect from a guitar at this price.
Reliability/Durability
:
5
The Grovers have loosened up a little bit. The finish, being satin, is extremely thin, and it will not hold up. Satin is good for retaining the responsiveness of the wood, given that your not weighing it down as you do with a gloss finish. However, the slightest nick will cut through the satin to the wood. Conversely, my old Guild with a high gloss finish could take the nick and bumps much better. I like satin for its sound, but don't expect much in the way of protection. The Taylor is no more durable than most solid wood, satin finish dreadnoughts, and far less durable than say, a high gloss Guild dreadnought.

I've been playing since 1981. I have had a number of guitars including Guild and Martin dreadnoughts, a G&L Legacy, a Gibson SG '61 reissue, and some crappy stuff back in the early 80's not worth mentioning. I would not buy this guitar again. I can get a new Martin D16GT, all solid wood mahogany dreadnought with a gloss top, for the same price I paid for this, and the Martin would be new w/warranty. My '98 Martin D1 is a superior guitar to this Taylor 410. The Tacoma DM 10 is as good as this Taylor, tonally and structurally, and the Tacoma costs 200 less brand new w/warranty. I don't think I got good value for my money, and I would definitely not consider purchasing the new Taylor 410 in ovangkol for the 936.00 plus tax my very honest and reputable dealer is asking. Its simply not worth that much money.

This guitar is pretty much your basic acoustic dreadnought. It has a comfortable neck which is better than most I've played, basic rotomatic tuners, a rosewood veneer on the headstock, rosewood fretboard, small-ish frets, a bookmatched spruce top, and ovangkol neck, back, and sides. Also, the strings are fed right through the bridge like a stopbar tailpiece would, so changing strings is a snap. I only give this an 8, not because it is less-than-stellar, but because it really doesn't have that many features per se.
Sound
:

This guitar's sound is pretty damn good. The ovangkol neck, back, and sides in combination with the spruce top make a pleasantly bright tone that is never overbearing. I just saw a pro playing this axe live the other night and he certainly seemed to be able to make more than a few bluesy-folk songs spring to life upon it. (It was miked and also had a dimarzio piezo pickup in the sound hole.) It scares me to think of what the more expensive Taylors would sound like.

I've been playing for a couple of years, and I also own a guild songbird, a Gibson ES-330, and a Takamine classical. If it were stolen I would have to kill the thief. I hate nothing about it. A pickup might have been nice, but some might prefer a 100% wholesome folk guitar. I would recommend this guitar to any who are looking for a solid mid-level dreadnought.

Bought in '95. It has a mahogany back and sides, not like the current 410 which uses ovangkol (whatever that is). It's more like the current 310 model. The style is basic dreadnought, no cutaways or electronics, with a pleasant satin finish. A very nice neck with ebony fingerboard. Overall, a basic rhythm guitar.
Sound
:
10
This is a wonderful sounding guitar, with a good deal of bass (which you would expect, from the mahogany), so it sounds better with bright strings. I'm not sure how to describe it, but the body is very "loose" -- but not in a bad way. The wood seems very flexible and "alive", so it's responsive and sustains well. Compared to other guitars I looked at from Gibson and Martin in it's price range, it was easily the best sounding of all. However, if you're looking for a fingerstyle guitar, this is probably not the one for you, because of its overall mellow tone and heavy bass response. Great for full chords, though. Every time I play it my wife looks up and says "Oh, it sounds so beautiful!" Every time!
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
The guitar was basically flawless when I got it. The finish was perfect and the action was fairly low, especially for an acoustic. The neck shape is the best thing about it: not too wide, not too thick, not too thin -- just right.
Reliability/Durability
:
9
I'm not a pro and the guitar gets relatively light duty, so I can't comment on the rigours of the road. But I've had it for almost 4 years now and it still looks new to me. It does have one fairly ugly scratch on the back, though, and I don't know how it got there, so possibly the finish is not the most durable.
Overall Rating

At the time I bought it, it was the cheapest guitar in Taylor's line. I can't imagine what the expensive ones are like, because this one is just wonderful. As I said earlier, compared to the other guitars in it's price range, the Taylor won hands down. The best thing I like about it is the neck shape and the feeling of being "alive" -- it's very responsive. The only thing I don't like is the heavy bass response -- that's not a fault of the guitar, however, it's just a result of the woods used. If I had to do it over again and had more money, I would probably get one with maple or rosewood bodies for the brighter tone. But, I would definitely get another Taylor, no doubt about it.

1997 Mahogany body with solid spruce top. The FB (I think) is ebony. Satin finish. Dreadnaught style acoustic guitar, with Grover tuners, and very nice molded case. No onboard electronics. Nice medium neck, with comfortable contour. This is a very simple guitar to look at, and at the time I bought it (new) it was Taylors least expensive model. The strings go through the bridge, which means no little pegs to fool with. It came with some docco from Taylor on how to adjust the neck, and how to identify when the guitar has too much/little moisture absorbed ino the wood.

Very full bodied, even tone. I use DiAddario Bronze medium strings on it (factory recommended) and with new strings, the tone is incredible... hit a D chord in the open position and it just rings forever. Can be very bassy sounding, depending on your individual picking sytle. No options here, just a well made acoustic 6 string, but it does it very well. It is well suited to any acoustic style guitar work. The strings rattle a little bit when you really strum hard, but thats to be expected on a guitar with low action.

I've had this about 7 months, and it's holding up fine. I expected some neck adjustment problems due the changing humidity and moisture conditions over this past winter, but I haven't had any. This is a super acoustic, the best I've ever had. It has no onboard electronics, so I'm going to put a Fishman PU in it soon, and get the 2nd strap button added. The only negative I can think of about it is that the Satin finish is very slick, and sometime that guitar will slip off my lap if I'm playing sitting down and really strumming away... the strap is a good thing to get.

1997 Taylor 410 acoustic dreadnought made in the USA. Mahogany back and sides, spruce top, all solid woods. Satin finish, which is kind of a nice change from the high gloss I'm used to seeing. This guitar is plain and simple. It has extra decoration. String-thru bridge makes changing strings a breeze. 20 Frets, neck joins body at the 14th. The neck is FAST and very comfortable, better than the Martins I've played on. The action is low and smooth, however the other 410s I've played have not been quite as good. I had the L.R. Baggs Dual System pickup added for electric capabilities. The controls are mounted in the sound hole which is rather awkward.
Sound
:
10
This guitar sounds really good. Nice full sound, good bass, and plenty of natural acoustic tone. I play acoustic rock and folk in an alternative Christian band. My Taylor fits in perfectly. I looked at a lot of other guitars before I got this one. I strongly considered getting an acoustic/electric like a Takamine or an Ovation. However, I wanted the best natural acoustic sound I could achieve. I wanted my guitar to sound like an acoustic instrument, not an electric trying to be an acoustic. The Baggs pickup I had installed conveys the true sound quite well through an amp or PA. I haven't used the Fishmann systems to be able to compare the two. I've had a bit of problems with feedback, especially running through my amp. I try to use the PA whenever possible.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The action could only be better if the strings were made out of butter. This guitar is smooth and sweet. It is hands down the best acoustic guitar I've ever played. However, I don't think this is characteristic of all 410s. The others I've played have been good, but not as low or as smooth. Still, they're easy players with good tone. The guitar is well made. It feels like a professional instrument from the moment you pick it up to the moment you play the last chord. The joints and frets are all well fitted. Very nice. The neck feels "heavy." It rests firmly in the left hand. On the Martins and Takamines I've played, the necks have been lighter. They don't feel as well anchored or as solid.

I've used this one on many live gigs with no problems except for feedback. It doesn't break strings readily, unless you do optional tuning. I tried tuning up a full step and popped some strings. Other than that, no problems. The only thing I'd improve is the endpin. I had to replace it when I had the pickup installed. It gets loose sometimes which is pretty awkward. I use this guitar with no backup. I trust it to perform well, and it always has.

I've been playing music for seven years, and guitar for the last two. I play on Fender Squire Vista electrics, a Marshall 50 watt dual reverb amp, and a Digitech RP-12. I'm a music major (trumpet) and very concerned with the quality of my sound. This guitar is the only blonde I've had my hands on in the last two years. I love it to death. It is the best guitar I've ever played, both in action and in sound. I wasn't going to spend this much money on a guitar. But from the moment I sat down and played that first G chord, I knew that this one was meant for me. I would buy it again in a heartbeat (assuming I had the money, which I don't) I played on Takamines, Martins, Ovations, Epiphones, Fenders, and some older Guilds. The Taylor just sounded better to my ears. For what I paid, this was the best guitar available to me.
