The model i have is the sand burst out of the 3 available, made in Taiwan the body is of the flat top variety with x bracing to enhance the bass notes and is not particularly deep (85mm)with an oval soundhole and a single cutaway allowing good access to the extremely beginner friendly, thin styled, easy to play, 22 fret, mahogany neck. The tuners are chrome unbranded but are of a very good quality and keep the guitar in tune effortlessly.
It has a piezo type pickup built in under the bridge and has a three band eq complete with vol control and what seems to be an additional slider control underneath the eq which enhances frequencies further throughout the eq band (basically a vol control for bass mid and treble).
the eq is situated on the top shoulder with the 9v battery compartment just in front of it towards the neck.
Sound

The sound of this guitar is what really caught my attention as i had spent a few hours trying other guitars in a more expensive price bracket... acoustically this wiped the floor with them all. I then tried the other guitars through an acoustic amp and wasn't particularly impressed by any of them until i plugged this one in... superb, bright, sparkly highs and earthy lows complement the sweet mid sound perfectly. Yamaha have a winner here.
I think that you can make any guitar fit any situation more or less and this is no exception,it's by far the most versatile acoustic i've ever played (22 yrs) covering a range of styles inc folk, country, rock, blues and jazz.
There is only one thing if i have to be honest that i could say against this guitar is that maybe (and this is over critical) the sound isn't the richest i've heared and some would maybe argue that it's a little thin sounding.
Action, Fit, & Finish

The action is spot on with no fret buzz , probably the best action on an acoustic i've ever played.
I cannot fault this guitar from a playability point of view.

I have had this guitar from new for 6 yrs (i think) and have gigged it, practiced and recorded with it with fab results in all situations. Outstanding durability and reliability.

Overall Rating

I've been playing for 22yrs and own a plethora of other gear.
If lost or stolen i would definately get my hands on another... I love the design, the sound, the playability, the feel.
I compared this guitar to takamine, ovation, right through the available range (up 2 about the ??1,500.00 bracket) as well as a few others that ain't so well known and was and still am blown away by the quality of this instrument especially when you consider the cost new was under ??400.00.
If you are after a budget guitar that will inspire your playing then look no further, The Yamaha apx5a has it all!
