I was looking for a new guitar in the $700 range. I feel like I tried everything; Seagull, Tak, Alvarez, Baby Taylor, Blueridge & on & on & on. I hadn't picked up a Yamaha, there weren't ever on my radar.

Then the salesperson handed me this guitar. After about a minute I was convinced. This is easily the most versatile guitar I own. It has a nice warm, rich sound with plenty of tone. Its handle heavy, agressive rhythm playing, flat-picking, finger-picking & leads all the way up the neck equally well.

This will be a great gig guitar.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
I'm pretty picky about my action and I haven't even tweaked this one yet. I like my action really low and this guitar came off the wall playing almost smooth as my Alvarez. I probably have it lowered a little & maybe install a bone nut, but the action out of the box is pretty impressive.

The Sandburst finish is beautiful. The inlays look classy as do the cream bindings. This is a really, REALLY good looking guitar.

The only "issue" I have is that a couple of the fret wires stick out of the edge of the neck just a bit but that's a fairly easy fix. I have yet to detect anything else wrong with the quality of components or the workmanship.

Reliability/Durability : 8
Haven't gigged with it yet, but I don't anticipate any issue.

The tuners, strap buttons, etc all seem sturdy & reliable.

The neck is rock-solid.

I always have a back-up but would have no qualms if you said I could only take this guitar.

I've been playing for more than 20 yrs and currently own an Alvarez 5055, Alvarez Yairi DY56 & a '74 Gibson Gospel. The Yairi has the best action and the Gibson has the best sound (unplugged) but this Yamaha is a good compromise between the 2.

The electronics truly stand out on this guitar. Once I plugged this baby in, the deal was sealed.

As I said, I was also trying out the Baby Taylor, Taks, Seagulls etc ( I must have played 50 different guitar) in the $700 price range and this Yamaha really stood out. The fact that I got it for $450 just made it that much better. I would have paid $600-$700 and felt like I had gotten a bargain.

I probably sound like a company shill, but this is a great workman's guitar. It's very versatile and would fit well into anyone's collection.

I play mostly rock ballads and grungy-style music, and this guitar is great for both. It's really marvellous for fingerpicking and chords too.

The guitar has a deep warm tone, and nice playability.

What I really like about the CPX700 is the sound when it's plugged in.. It's so full.. I can't stop playing :D I didn't like it that my battery ran out so fast, but hey, I shouldn't have left it plugged in all night long :p Remove the cable from the guitar if you stop playing ;)
The built in tuner is usefull.. It's a little bit annoying that it switches itself off after a minute to preserve the battery even while you are still tuning, but hey, just turn it back on :)

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I bought it second hand, but the previous owner hadn't changed the action. There was no reason to change it. Set-up was perfect, action was good (perhaps a tiny bit too high..) but nice playability.

I have to admit that I find the looks of a guitar equally important as the sound. I have to fall in love at first sight with a guitar when I see it, or I'll never buy it. And the CPX-700 is stunningly beautiful.. the black finnish, the curved black pickguard, the pearl inlay , the grand concert shaped body, the beautiful headstock.. I love it :)

Reliability/Durability : 10
It looks very solid. I haven't gigged with it yet, but I've bumped it against various objects like chairs and tables and the ceiling (don't ask) and not even a scratch :)
Yamaha has a great reputation, and so far this guitar lives up to it :)

never dealt with them

I bought this guitar because I needed something better than my cheapo crap 'vanderson' beginner guitar. And better it is! I love it. The sound is full, rich and warm, and it can handle all the styles i like to play. great for strumming and fingerpicking, and when it's plugged in, this guitar really shines. The ART-1way-pickup system is excellent. For this alone I would consider buying the CPX-900 with the ART-3way system, if my guitar got stolen. That's to say, after I hunt the bastard who stole my baby down, and kick him in the nuts :p

The guitar features a solid Spruce top (very nice), mahogany neck, back and sides, a rosewood fretboard set-in to a jumbo body. It has the A.R.T. pick-up system (hands down, the best on the market!!), w/ an on-board tuner. The tuners are VERY solid, no tuning problems at all.

Sound : 10
I can't say enough about the sound of this guitar. I have played EVERYTHING(yes, Taylor/Martin, etc...). This guitar stands up to "those" guitars with ease. This guitar could easily cost three times as much based on it's sound alone. It has a VERY full, warm sound. In my opinion, it is amazing. It's sound is much fuller and "articulate" than any Taylor "concert" series I have played. The pick-up system produces a wonderfully "real" acoustic sound. I have had MANY complements on it's sound through a P.A. The CPX700 can produce any sound you like. It's truly professional in it's sound. I've been playing for 24 years, so you can trust my judgement.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This is an area that is usually a point of contention with any new guitar. However, with the CPX700, you don't have ANY set-up issues at all. The action and intonation was absolutely perfect. I was extremely pleased with the fact that I could take it right out to the studio (after a string change of course), and start recording!! Amazing right out of the box. The finish is really great. No other company(that I know of), has a "sandburst" color. It's flawless. The binding, abalone inlay (on the fretboard and sound hole), and finish are truly great in this price range. Again, this guitar could sell for much more!!

Reliability/Durability : 10
As with all Yamaha guitars I have had the joy of owning, the craftmanship is outstanding. It's durability is very obvious. This guitar is built rock solid. The strap buttons are tight and secure, the input jack is extremely solid, and the neck is sure. I would use this guitar without a back-up any time. This guitar will last a life-time.

Customer Support : 9
Though I have never contacted Yamaha for this piece of gear, I have for a mixing board. They were more than gracious to deal with the problem and with out any "red-tape." I would imagine their customer service is still up to par.

Overall Rating : 10
As stated above, I have been playing for 24 years and have owned countless guitars. The CPX700 is where I stop buying and trading acoustic's. I have found "THE" guitar for me. It plays fast, full and warm. If it were stolen, I would replace it immediately. Taylor, Martin,Alvarez and others make excellent guitars, don't get me wrong. However, the CPX700 has, in my opinion, better sound and playability. The price tag is significantly better as well (around $700). Get it now before Yamaha raises the price. If you can't afford $700, find a "CPX5" on EBAY. They are the "little brother" to the CPX700. You should get it for $375-$400.

This thing sounds great unplugged. Rich bright sound and totally balanced Bass and Treble. I play a lot of praise and worship music and they come in various genres. This guitar sounds beautiful in every style. Plucking is great as well as strumming.
Every note is clear and distinct right up to the highest fret. There is a slight issue when plugging in. The pickup has very low output. It needs a high powered amp in order to bring out the best. I have a 75w Laney Acoustic amp and the guitar sounds good on it. However, the volume on the guitar needs to be set at 3/4 and the volume on the amp needs to be set at 1/2.

Dislikes:
- A slight vibration from the 5th String, 2nd fret
- Very low output from the pickup

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The guitar played straight out of the box without the need for any adjustments. Action is great as you would expect from Yamaha. The fit and finish is flawless except for a scratched up pick guard. Beautifully built guitar.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Will definitely withstand live playing and is built solid. Much better than many of the Gibson and Fender guitars that I tried out before buying this one. The hardware seems tought enough to withstand any punishment. The tuning heads are rigid and never go out of tune. Strap buttons are solid and nicely fitted. I can truly depend on this guitar. I would use it for a gig witout a backup.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I dont know. Never tried getting it repaired.

I have been playing for a couple of years now and I currently own 4 guitars. A Yamaha F310, Ibanez RG Tremolo, Starsun Electro Acoustic and Yamaha CPX 700. This guitar is definitely the best one I have. If it were stolen or lost, I would definitely buy another one. Overall, I love the sound of it and the action, fit and finish.
Hate the low output from the pickups.
