It's a basic acoustic dreadnought.

Sound : 10
This is one of the most wonderful sounding guitars I have ever played. It loves to be played.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I bought this guitar in 1995 or so, about 20 years after it was actually built. I've passed it onto my nephew. There is some fret buzz, where the strings are played too much, but I have to go fix it. It's not the guitar's fault.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
This is a tank of a guitar. It will take as much punishment as you can throw it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I don't know anything about Yamaha. Never needed to talk to them.

Been playing for 20 years, since I was a teenager. I own a strat, a BC Rich NJ Bich, an ES-335, and a squier strat. Amps are a Fender Hot Rod and a Marshall small-stack.

This guitar sounds so big, and it seems to get better as I get older. This is a great guitar, and I would never let it go. Woe unto you who would steal this wonderful guitar from me.

i am the original owner of a 1979 Yamaha FG-335 Left-hand dreadnought model. i believe it was made in Japan back in '79. not too many features as this is an entry-intermediate model. i think i paid $199 + tax back then.

Sound : 10
i just can't figure it! i thought this guitar sounded great in 1979. after putting it away for 15 years in it's original cheap chipboard case without any humidification and just taking it back out in 2005 (i put new strings on it, of course), it's sounds like a very expensive guitar...really! it has a big, big sound almost like a mini jumbo...why? i don't know. i just think there are many of these older yamahas which have exceptional tone and sound. if you flatpick aggresively, you don't need an amp. i wouldn't sell this guitar because i'd only get around $150 for it and honestly, after trying some $1500 martins or taylors, i'd rather keep this vintage yamaha because of the big, deep sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
mine is still all original and holding up well. but the mfgr. used cheap materials for the nut and bridge. i still have them in place and will build and replace with bone material when i get the time...that should really make this guitar better than it already is. the neck is still true and straight. the body has not split or cracked after 26+ years.

Reliability/Durability : 10
have had no problems...rosewood neck and bridge are still fully functional after all these years. i've slightly worn down the first couple of frets on the lower strings, but that's just from normal use.

great sound from a lower end guitar. plus i've been able to set the action pretty low. very reliable. but as i've said before, the gem trait of my Yamaha FG-335 guitar is the AWESOME BIG SOUND!

My Dad told me about a nice Yamaha acoustic in a antiques warehouse just outside Leicester in December 2004.It turned out to be a FG-335,quite well used - but to me thats a good sign - it means its been loved!
In the 70s/80s I used to have a FG180 I sold in 1986.I had always regetted doing that. This was as near as I'd ever seen to that guitar.
The old adage that "they don't make 'em like these anymore" is so true here..I believe from its number this is around about a 1977 one(?),made in Taiwan.

Sound : 9
This is the guitar I play around the house but I have also gigged with it,using it for a couple of "thrashy" songs in my set.I've had a Fishman pick-up put in it.Its short of sustain but very inspiring.
I also used it on a joint gig with a Leicester band called Ist.Thorugh their congas, electric bass and another acoustic player it cut through really well,I really dug in and got some nice lead work out of it.I likened it that night to the acoustic equivalent of a Telecaster electric,it had that short, cutting, twangy quality with the band.Very useful..
I sit doodling on it watching TV.
Late at night I sit on my bed and write songs on it.Most of my last six months songwriting output has been done on the FG-335.I even keep it by my bedside if its sleepless night or dreamlike inspiration strikes at 3AM..
..Its that kind of relationship..er..with a guitar lol!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Like I said its not got great sustain but its a "pick me up and play me" guitar - and I do - all the time!

Reliability/Durability : 10
Its a toughie, its taken many knocks over the years but it delivers in a rough hewn, soulful kind of way. There's sweeter sounds to be heard but its a guitar I can depend on.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt direct with them.

Overall Rating : 10
I have other acoustics - an Ovation Balladeer,a Stanford D-1,an Eko Rio Grande V1,a Hohner Arbour series..but always missed the Yamaha FG-180 I had in the 70s/80s..Now I've had this FG-335 fr 6 months I can't imagine life without it.Somehow some of the best songs I've written in years have been on written on this thing. Were it ever stolen or lost I would want another like it,yes.

I bought this from my friend(who at the time was just picking up bass). He had a old Yamaha his dad owned for a long time but never used for years he just left it in the closet.I ended up getting this guitar for a quiktune tuner even trade(about 20 dollars)! haha I kinda feel bad I suckered him that bad as it was worth far more but it wasnt being used at all and was in unplayable shape when I got it and he needed a tuner since he was starting on bass.Anyways now to the features which are few.Laminate top I believe, not really sure what kind of woods are used except rosewood neck and fingerboard, dreadnought sized,Yamaha machine heads, pretty much thats all

Sound : 9
Now this is where this thing shines! For a cheap guitar this thing sounds very good as it has a very mellow warm sound to it,especially with some D'Addario phosphor bronze mediums.I play mostly death metal and heavy metal but I'm very open and like to play all styles to increase my skills.Like I said though the sound is quite suprising and I'm glad I picked it up for something to mess around on.Probably be pretty good for fingerstyle since its got warmer tone to it.Still works great for chords and picking too.Now I don't think they make this model anymore although they make similar ones in the FG series and these guitars are amazing sounding for the price definetely worth checking out.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 6
Well when I got this it was in horrendous shape. The neck was extremely bent out of shape, frets are quite worn down and buzzed at a few spots, and the nut was broke. So I worked on it not really worrying about it since I had got it for so little.First thing I bought a Bone nut and roughly sanded grooves for the strings then i adjusted the truss rod(took many turns haha) and worked from there.Put some strings on their and tuned it up but the nut wasnt low enough and It seemed to strum hard so after hours of carefully fine tuning the nut and sanding the bridge I got a perfect guitar in the end and I couldn't be happier! So properly setup these guitars play great.Although Yamahas are known to be well built and dependable this guitar was very neglected so it needed a little work but after it played great and I haven't had any problems with it.Neck is pretty thick compared to their newer necks which is the only thing that could use improving and some better machine heads as most Yamahas seem to have only ok ones.Finish is what you would expected very used but I don't mind it's only for around the house and quick jams with friends.

Reliability/Durability : 8
Well it's a Yamaha so it's built to last.As I just explained I got it in hard shape but now works great.I don't gig with this and I'm sure most people wouldn't as its a low end guitar although a great one.

Customer Support : 7
Never needed it but the site could be more useful seems to lack information and is difficult to find at times.Warranty is great on these guitars though, limited life time warranty on the body.

Overall Rating : 9
Although you can't get them now Yamaha makes similar in the FG series that are fabolous guitars for the money. In my opinion the best beginner guitars out there right now, although I was impressed with the Epiphone DR100 and AJ100 guitars also.Guitars in the beginner range have improved so much that finding a good quality acoustic at 200 dollars isn't that hard anymore. So check out the Yamaha FG series you won't be dissapointed the overall quality is unmatched.Beaver creek, although new,is another brand I believe that makes great beginner acoustics so look around, have fun and get whats best for YOU.

Bought it in 1979 at the BX at Keesler AFB, Biloxi Mississippi. This is my second guitar. The first was bought in Spain and was a beginners classical guitar which got lost along lifes way. Very nice guitar.

Sound : 9
The sound is great. There's alittle buzzing but its from the tuning gears. Normal wear and tear for a 25 year old guitar.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I adjusted the action once and I haven't done anything except change the strings and give it a good rub down each time I change the strings.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Built like a brick house. This guitar has been dropped and knocked over a dozen and a half times. Plenty of battle scars. Had a cat do the dirty deed in the sound hole. Caught my son bouncing up and down on it when he was just 2. Been across the Pacific twice in the belly of an airplane. When it's not being played it's left standing in a corner somewhere. The neck is still straight. It's a good guitar.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with customer support, I do most of the minor maintenance.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing since 11 years old, started with a beginners classical guitar built in Spain. Had a Silvertone Finger Bleeder for a while that someone gave me. The Yamaha is my third guitar, the other is Fender copy I picked up in Japan. It's a Westminster Strat copy. I believe they make the Wasburn line now. All in all I wouldnt trade it for a Martin....well maybe but it would hurt to see my old friend go away.

It is a fairly standard dreadnought sized guitar, I think that the construction is laminated wood throughout, but I can't say what wood were used or quote any of the specifications as there was no detailed brochure with it when I bought it. I's got a good chunky neck that plays a lot faster than it initially feels that it should. Everything is pretty much as you would expect on an entry level acoustic guitar.

Sound : 9
THis was my first guitar, and at the time that I bought it I knew nothing about how a guitar should sound to a player. I never really compared it properly to another guitar until I wwas thinking about
replacing it years later and found it difficult to find another acoustic that sounded good enough to justify the expense of trading up. Depending on where you strum it can go from janlgy to quite mellow and is certainly good enough for folk, blues, and general rhythm work, it is also very good at doing early rock and roll if you clip in a sound hole pick up(and if you do,it does sound more authentic with cheap one rather than the hi tech modern type). It is still my only acoustic guitar (has been since 1981) and I am still looking to replace it when the right guitar comes along, but as I amnot using it for performance purposes I can take my time.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
fit and finish were fine, I have not adjusted anythng since it was bought and it has worn in beautifully. The action is a little high by the standard of modern acoustics, but the slightly higher action means that when you take a bottle slide to it responds well, or at least it does in the hands of others (I am a rubbish slide player).

Reliability/Durability : 10
well I have had it since 1982 and it has not needed any adjustment since so I will have to give a ten in this category

Customer Support : No Opinion
I have never had to use this service but I am told that Yamaha are very good

Overall Rating : 10
I think that it says a lot that I have stuck with this guitar since 1982 and have not found another that outclasses it enough to make trading it in worthwhile. The electric guitars have come and gone, but the FG335 is still there. I think I will get a parlour size guitar to go with it rather than replace it.

This guitar was given new to my Dad by my Grandpa in 1981, two years before I was born. It's made in Taiwan. Spruce top, mahogany back and sides, all laminated, I understand. Gloss finish, and the top has taken on a little bit of an amber color due to the age. It stays in tune indefinitely. Very solidly built guitar, typical of Yamahas of this period, from my experience. I give it a 10 because it has all the features a workhorse or entry-level acoustic should have.

Sound : 10
This is my favorite part of this guitar. :) It has a very "big" sound. The bass is full and rich, but still well defined, and the high end is much better than many acoustics I've played. I don't get the brittle high end some reviewers mentioned. Mine's fitted with 13-56 gauge strings. I use this guitar for a variety of styles, but it mainly occupies the bluegrass flavored side of my shows. Works well for rhythm as well as leads, and has good volume to boot. I plan on having some sort of pickup system installed on it. Hopefully I can find one that captures the beauty of this guitar's tone. As for comparisons to better guitars, I've A-B'd this one with my 1958 Martin D-18. The overall tone of these guitars was very different. The Martin has a little more detailed high end, but the Yamaha seemed to have a stronger bass. I know this isn't really comparing apples to apples, but the Yamaha compares very well to a guitar valued ten times more. Due to the Martin's age and value, it rarely leaves the house. I have am Ibanez acoustic as well, but the Yamaha is my number 1 acoustic. I give it a ten because it sounds better than any comparably priced guitar I've played, and as well as some more expensive ones.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This guitar was set up with 13-56's at the store, and that's all that has ever been on it. The action is s little high, but it works well for my style of playing and I haven't bothered to mess with it. Some people like to knit-pick in this section, but I'm not going to. This is a well-built, solid guitar and mine doesn't have the fret finishing problems others have mentioned. The woods are beautiful and getting even more-so with age. I won't take off points for the higher action because I like it.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
Every Yamaha I've seen has been built like a tank. This one has withstood plenty of playing, especially in the last 6 years, and has very minor scratches to show. It was left fully tuned up, in it's case, with 13's for about 5 years. That's a big no-no, but when I opened it up 8 years ago, it was in tune with no action problems. When I tell people that, they think I'm lying but it's the honest-to-goodness truth. That's durability. It has held up to live playing, and I'll play it live until my Dad asks for it back.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with Yamaha. Probably won't have to either.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing almost 9 years. My dad let me have this one as he doesn't play any more. My uncle also received and identical one at the same time as my dad. I've played both, and I like mine a little better, possibly because it's more "played-in." The only modification I've made is adding a strap button on the heel. If it were stolen or lost, my whole family would go through a grieving period, then we'd form a posse to track the thief down if it were stolen, or find another if it was lost. I't more like a sister than a guitar, really. I love the sound. I wish it had a pickup system, but I can fix that pretty easy. Besides, the pickups of 2004 sound a little better than the ones from 1981. Some people don't play theirs live because it isn't a high-dollar guitar, but I don't have any inhibitions about it. It sounds better than the guitars a lot of people I play live with. The fact that I could buy 10 more like mine for one of theirs makes it even better. Besides, many people I play for wouldn't know the difference any way. If you find one of these, my advice is to buy it. I think you'll be glad.

Brought this guitar back around 1982. Basic steel strung acoustic guitar. What more is there to say except it's a great guitar.

Sound : 10
I just loved the sound and feel of the guitar from the moment I picked it up in the shop. I'm just a basic strumming around folk and blues player but the sound is all I need. As so many others have said it's just a real easy guitar to play from bar cords to running around the frets I don't get any hum or vibration.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Never had any problems with the set up or quality of the build on this guitar. Fits like a glove. The finnish is a good as the day I brought it but then it's never been out of the house unless in it's case so I treat it very gently!

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've kept the guitar in a hard case for 20 years and it's in pretty nearly perfect condition and sounding better all the time.

Never had to call on the warrenty

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing since the early 70's - just me mucking about. Getting a bit more serious now. I think country blues suits me so I'll see where this leads.

I went and brought this guitar with a much more accomplished friend who loved the sound this made. He had just brought a more expensive Yamaha and wanted to swap. Thanks goodness I never did.

For the money this was a brilliant buy.

This was my first new 6 string acoustic. previous guitars were really old and really cheap, so this one was loaded as far as I'm concerned.

Sound : 10
My FG335 sounds great anywhere, any time. I am not a disciplined guitar player although I have been hackin' since 1960. More than a few people are sure I am more accomplished than I really am, and I lay it all to the sound this instrument produces. It gets better with age. Experimenting with strings can be very rewarding.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I picked this guitar over more expensive Martins. I fell in love with it the moment I picked it up. Sort of like the puppy at the pound begging you to take it home, eyes full of promise of faithful comapnionship. It fits like a glove even after years of changes to my girth, etc. I had played a Framus 12 string for about seven years before buy this baby. I hardly ever touch the 12 now. The fit is great, the finish is beautiful. Fret wires are not flush and smooth, but not a nagging problem.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I haven't abused it, but I haven't pampred it either. Nothing has ever gone wrong with it. Not a single problem. It holds a tune like none other.

Customer Support : No Opinion
The warranty is up, and they don't make this faithful model any longer. Never had to use this service, but if Yamaha customer service is as responsive as the FG335, it has to rate a 10 also.

Overall Rating : 10
Playing since 1960, mostly alone, and have developed my own undisciplined style. My guitar is my therapy. Wish I had bought two of these. Don't know what I'd do if it were lost or stolen. If you look up love in the dictionary, you'll see a picture of me and my Yamaha FG335.

Features : 9
The guitar was made in 1978 or 1979, in Japan. It has a spruce top joined at the center. Unfortunately, it did not have the three-piece back, the rosewood sides, or the mother of pearl inlays of the FG-340 that I wanted but which was not available lefthanded.

Instead, it has mahogany sides and back, rosewood frets, and standard Yamaha hardware everywhere else. Terrific value for the money, then or now.

Sound : 10
As so many others reviewers exclaim, the sound on this guitar is nothing short of remarkable. It has given Martins and Takaminis it has been pit against all the competition they wanted - and then some. It seemed - and still seems - impossible to get the quality of tones from it one can, whether live or recorded. Early on I found D'Addario Silk & Steel strings best suited my playing, its relatively high action, and my ear, which gave it a bright and ringing intonation that anyone who heard it fell in love with. However, unlike some others (who have sung of the rich, mellow sound that has come to theirs over time), mine seems to have lost a bit of the original clarity over the past 24 years. Perhaps if I switched strings I could recapture it. (Suggestions anyone?) In spite of this it still is lovely, whether finger-picked, flat-picked, or strummed to anything from blues to overtone-laden Kotke-esque compositions of my own.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The factory action was a little high, left untouched. After reading others' success with a professional lowering I am inclined to consider it, as it looks there is room for it without inducing fret buzz. Fit and finish were and remain flawless in every regard but for the edges of the fretboard, where the fretwires protrude just a bit uncomfortably if one fixates on it. Beyond that, it does not seem possible that Yamaha could have put so much quality into so comparatively inexpensive a guitar.

Reliability/Durability : 10
My FG-335 has been the definition of reliability and durability, surviving a couple of minor mishaps and much playing under some degree (or greater) of influence. No matter where I've taken it and what I've put it through it has not changed one bit, and once tuned will hold it indefinitely - which just blows me away. I've never really recklessly abused it, but its been played high and low across the US, enjoying many happy hours being sawed on in a hammock in Hawaii overlooking the beach. Many more played not on but literally *in* the ocean, wading around in the surf strumming the sun to bed to the delight of strolling vacationers (whose enjoyment of golden strains brought to them over the rush of waves by a Maui breeze caused them to universally believe I was a better guitar player than I am).

Customer Support : No Opinion
I have never needed to do one thing to this instrument from the day I bought it.

Overall Rating : 10
Overall, the FG-335 is such a fundamentally sound guitar that I have looked at and *not* bought any number of others costing many times what it did that did not offer an advantage to warrant it. I've been playing for real since I bought the FG-335 almost 25 years ago, it having been preceded by a rental I took lessons on as a kid and a catalogue-purchased righty my sister handed down that I reworked to play lefthanded. My favorite thing about the guitar is the way it fits me physically, like a glove. There is nothing not to like about it; the only thing I would have preferred would have been the eye-appeal of the FG-340 my roomie had. I cannot imagine life without it, that is how much a part of mine it has been. And, I hope, remains.
