Finish is laminate, standard dreadnought shape, not sure what tuners it has since it's not in front of me but they're fine. No accessories were included but i bought it in 2008 when it was made.

Sound is spot on. It stays in tune ridiculously well, i think the first week i bought it i only had to tune it like once or twice, and i play it for hours every day! such a rich, bright sound, so good!!!!! palm muting is easy and beautiful as well.

the guitar was set up very well. i didn't need to adjust the action at all, it's a little higher than i was used to but not ridiculous or anything. strings were fine too, i'm just changing them now and i got it in october. no flaws.

i haven't played live with it really, just with a small group of friend but it withstands it well. it sure is loud. the hardware is fine, the tuners are great like i mentioned before. the finish is good too, it only has a few dings in it so far from me hitting it on the radiator or things like that. the strap buttons are solid too, i put a new strap on it and it's on there really snug. i could definitely use it without backup. i can count on it to stay in tune very well

i've been playing for about a year and a half, the other guitar i own is a squier bullet (yeah, the $99 one). this guitar was only $129 and it is worth hundreds more than the squier in terms of quality. i was seriously blown away when i found this. i tried out other guitars in a higher price range, i was willing to spend up to 500, and this was by far the best that i played. i tried nicer yamahas, and some fenders, i forget what else, but this was the best! if it were stolen/lost i think i'd buy another one, unless i was all of a sudden rich, then maybe i'd get a super nice martin or taylor. but for the money, this guitar is AMAZING value. i can't stress that enough. i don't regret getting this one at all.

I bought this guitar knowing that there were other guitars that sounded better but cost o lot more. I compared it to breedlove 400$, 200$ ibanez, fenders, epiphones and i could not justify spening the extra 50- 250$ more. As soon as i picked it up and strummed it, i fell in love with it. Rich sound and strong clear bass, mids, and highs with the factory strings. After playing it for a day ,all day i could tell the strings were not as clear sounding (yes i played the crap out of it!). So i am looking to upgrade to D'addario med bronze's. ..To be continued

My FG 335 model was built in 1978. All standard stuff, laminate spuce top, asian mahoghany back & sides, yamaha factory tuners. Strictly no frills, but hey, frills won't make it sound better.

I was so impressed with the sound of the FG 160-1 that I bought in June '08 that I kept looking for more. I can't help but think that the Yamaha FG series guitars are the best bang for the buck out there. My 160 has an incredible full rich sound, the 335 that I picked up in Oct '08 is brighter, though not as rich or loud, but still sounds better than other brands I've tried. You can't beat Yamaha for sound, especially for the price you pay. Frankly, I don't know how they do it.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

very high action on this FG 335 when I got it - but that was mostly due to a slightly bowed neck - a 1/4 turn on the truss rod and a sanded down saddle fixed that up nicely. A few dings on the finish but nothing that would affect the sound.

it's almost 31 years old now and just a few minor dings on the top. I think it'll last another 31 years.

I first started playing in 1971 on a classical guitar - never really liked it that much so spent much of the last 30 years in the case - then I discovered the Yamaha FG's. Now I play every day - even if it's only for 10 minutes. I love my Yamahas and would love to add to this collection. Martin who?

Features are typical FG style as most reviewers have described. A classic design based on a classic Martin dreadnought. A laminated top which has aged to a deep golden tone. Mine is from the mid-eighties and has had a fishman natural II pickup installed. Just looks nice and basic, and no one will guess its amazing secret- the sound!
Sound
:
9
Full and rich sound which delivers beautiful overtones/undertones and rings on with class, and defines itself very nicely. As another reviewer stated, it pays to try different strings and now I am on medium phosphor bronze which sound great tho' my hands tend to sweat a lot and they wont last long. I'm sure there are finer sounding guitars out there but prepared to pay a lot and then be constantly worried about damaging the precious thing instead of playing it!

The action is a bit high on mine but near the nut I dont notice that and it plays easily. There are no flaws. Its simply a perfect players guitar. I also own a 12 string Yammy, an FG 312, older and similarly robust.

I have been fortunate enough to realise at the young age of nine just how wonderful the guitar is as an instrument. I have owned a few in my time and wouldnt part with this, and here's the problem for the would-be purchaser of an FG 335. They are simply one of the best FG's and so why would anyone want to part with one? Most old FG's are fantastic value. Now in 2008, the original owners are dying and the dumb relatives just clear out their stuff. I mean, it's just an old guitar, right. Yes, sweet ladies, goodnight, goodnight!

I own 3 Yamies now. Did have 5 but sold a couple of FG160's. I still own a FG340-II and a Fg-200. I believe the 335 has a sweetest tone compared to the others. Also, the later 70's models (made in Taiwan) seem easier to play IMHO than the earlier models. It has a solid bass and clear highs. I play with light strings as I like to bend the strings a bit for blues. It's stock (plastic nut and saddle) but I plan to change the saddle for a bone one in the future. I put one in my FG200 to lower the action and it made the tone warmer and more clear.
Action, Fit, & Finish

Action is still a little high for my taste but is better than early 70's models. Still looks good and plays nice. Medium gauge strings tend to be hard to play bar chords with on Yamahas in general ( at least for me).

I used to think Yamaha's weren't that great as they were all laminate until I played one. Now, I think they are the best value for the money. My 3 Yamies are all made in Taiwan and I think they are probably just as good as the Japanese ones as it's more the material and method of assembly/quality control rather than the place of origin. New guitars today are mostly made in China (ROC) but the quality I've seen coming out of there lately is amazing compared to 2 years ago. Same for Korean guitars. It wasn't that long ago that Japan stood for junk. Nuff said. I own several acoustic guitars but I mainly play my 335. I was in GC the other day and saw a new F335. One of their cheapest models sold today. I picked it up and played it to see if my opinion of yamaha guitars still held true. It was loud and clear. Not as sweet as my 79 but still, for the money, a great starter guitar. I also played a Martin Eric Clapton 000 guitar there and though it didn't sound as good as the Martin, it was a LOT cheaper and didn't sound bad. just different.

I'd say most acoustic guitars pretty much have no features... I mean having tuners is pretty standard...
I guess if you're talking about asthetics, they didn't waste any time making it too frilly, but it is pretty to look at. It was my first guitar and I rather enjoy it a lot. I have the F335BL and it has a georgous black finish throughout. The Yamaha design on the headstock is pretty and the tuners look nice being gold on black.

I feel as if this guitar has a booming sound and is great for strumming chords with. I mainly play rythem guitar and sing as a sort of hobby with my friends. This was my first guitar, and I learned to play with folk rock and acoustic versions of my favorite rock songs.
It's a great sound, the lows are there but not too loud, the highs are there but not too loud, and the sound is very deep. I use Martin silk on steel folk strings on it, and they really compliment the tone well.

I got my guitar at guitar center, my dad spotted me a 50 and I payed 100 from my first paycheck for it. Those were the days...
The finish is perfect as far as I can tell, the saddle and bridge and nut are in good shape, and there isn't any fret buzz. My main complaint is that the guitar has pretty high action at the moment. the strings just keep getting further and further away from the frets the further down the neck it goes. I'm rather certain that it was like this when I bought it, but not for sure.
I've had it for about a year and I actually like the action being high because it helps me build up finger strength. I'll probably get an allen wrench and adjust the truss rod in a few days though, as playing barre chords on it is a bit of a chore past the 5th fret.

I have played this guitar "live" before, I play it all the time with my friends when we're just sitting around at my house. The tuners are great and will continue to keep it in tune as long as I can strum it. The strap button is good, and the finish is fine, although it's so shiny that it keeps attracting fingerprints like a mother, but I don't mind. I'd say it's a wonderful guitar to take to the beach or hiking. I don't worry about it breaking at all.

I've been paying for about a year now, and this is the only guitar I own at the moment, but I have a Fender Mustang to arrive at my house soon.
The guitar center employee told me that "Some old guy got a Martin and took it back within a few days to get the Yamaha I was playing" I didn't really believe it, but I can see why he might have.
If it were lost or stolen I would find it and kill whomever stole it. It's sentimental to me because my dad helped me get it, rest his soul.
I love the look of the guitar, and the sound I get from it. I wish I had gotten the wooden bodied one instead of the black one now, but it's just color, no difference in sound, and that's what matters. I've played other guitars and the only guitar that I've played that really made me go "this is so much better than my Yamaha" is a Fender Stratacoustic, and I just have a fling with the Stratacoustic anyway, so it's purely lust.
If you can get it for 150 like I did, I'd say go for it. It's an amazing quality instrument from a great company and it's good to learn on. I would reccomend it as a first guitar to anyone.

I have been playing for over ten years. I have since started playing a twelve string ovation which has become my mainstay. I will eventually upgrade to a much better guitar for the six string. The Yamaha is a very good starter guitar. It forced me to really work on my fingering since the action was so high. So it worked out for the best. But I would never use this guitar to play on stage like I do the twelve string.

very nice action, I've played many expensive guitars that don't compare. I'm using Martin Marquis Silk and Steel ultra light strings, and it really zings on the high end, but you can get some rumbling base tones if you palm it at the bridge. I tend to thump it quite a bit, and even the thumps have a rich tone!

30 years later the neck is still laser-straight, and the tone is outstanding. I haven't exactly babied it, so it has the odd knick and scratch here and there, but the tone is unaffected. There's a little bit of pick-marking on the lip of the soundhole and the rosewood fretboard has visible divots in the first 3 frets (a whole lot of C, G, and D chords later), the frets are getting kind of flat but there's absolutely NO string buzz!

Black, high-gloss finish. Excellent, mirror like and very well done. Gold tuners. White rosette around the soundhole. This is a nice looking guitar - does not look cheap whatsoever. Who's to say how the finish will hold up over time - then again, I didn't buy this guitar based on appearance. The neck seems narrower than other acoustics...seems typical of a Yahmaha guitar. This guitar was made in Indonesia. Believe it includes a lifetime warranty. I checked Yamaha's website and it didn't list this model. It's brand new so likely they didn't update the site yet. For what I paid, I'm guessing there's laminate on the back and side...possibly a solid spruce top but I don't know.

I play original rock and acoustic pieces...as well as a few covers. The sound of this guitar is well balanced with excellent intonation. The guitar seems to be in tune everywhere on the neck. Pretty impressive for a guitar in this price range. The lows don't boom but they are there. The highs don't sparkle but they are there. The guitar lacks a bit in volume but this is likely due to alot of laminate on this guitar. Seems like it would be good to play some blues on. Very good sound for strumming and good to very good sound for fingerpicking.

Excellent!!!! For $150, I feel like I STOLE this guitar from Guitar Center. Yamaha delivered in spades on this axe. Unbelieveable value. I'd compare the sound, finish, and playability of this guitar to some acoustics in the $1000+ range. How do I know this???? I've played them.....acoustics ranging anywhere from 1,000 to 3,500 (1968 Gibson, Martin Clapton model) dollars. Yes, it is that good. I've been playing for 20 years and know a nice axe when I play and hear one. This is it. Although, I picked through a few different guitars of the same model and this one shined bright, hands down. The others seems nice too. ALWAYS pick and choose on acoustics. There seems to be a lack of consistency even on the same model.

Puts out an extremely well-balanced, mid-bassy husky tone. No stridency (too high notes) anywhere up the fretboard. My favorite fg of all (I have the 140, 160, 180, 200, 340, 345.) Loud enough, has a sound not heard on other guitars, even the fg line. I found the 340 too bright, brassy, and a bit messy sounding. I found the 345 (rosewood) a little boring, frankly. The 335 is one of the best values in the old fg (70's and 80's) line, along with the 160, imho. Has a dark punch when fingerpicked; the 'd' string really stands out. Does get a bit mushy when really strummed, but I like that personally. Puts out a bassy and midrangey wall of sound- with just enough high end- that sounds...regal, somehow.

Never paid more than 115.00 for one of these gems. I have...a few 335's. I played with identical new strings my 335, 340, and 345, and I honestly enjoy the 335's sound much more than the other- more expensive- two. I found, also, that GHS 12-54 Vintage Bronze strings really bring out the sound of the fg's. Anyway, I am so glad people pay over 300.00 for the 340 and 345, and really don't know about the 335. It also records great, wonderful balance.

The neck contour is the best I???ve ever played. Why are all the necks on the new guitars, save the vintage remakes so thin backed. My HD28 felt like a toy compared to my FG335. I like support and mass in a neck. Tuners were shit so I replaced them with Grover locking tuners. All laminated body: Spruce and Mahogany, but very nice woods used.

What made me look into these guitars after years of sticking with the top names was the tone I kept hearing. Every single old Yamaha I heard at various gigs was better sounding than my Guilds, Martins, Tacomas, Taylors, Larrivees and many others.
One day I heard my son playing what I thought was my HD28 (on one of its good days). I walked into his room and he had this old Yamaha FG-340W he earned from his aunt for work he did for her.
I said wow that sounds good. Then I said, do you ever play my HD28? He didn???t want to hurt my feelings and hem???d and Haw???d around saying ??? sorry dad, but this sounds better.
Rich, articulate, lots of bottom end, clear, loud, balanced. All the things I was looking for over the last 34 years. It absolutely blew my Martin HD28 out of the water which tended to be too boomy and muddy. Something cool I once heard on a review: You can???t make an old guitar. All this hype about forward shifted X-bracing ??? all it does is make an already boomy guitar boomier.
I???ve always been told that laminate guitars can only improve a little over time. Bull!!! If a top has to be solid, then explain a Rainsong to me. Carbon fiber top? I think I???ll stick with the organic (Woody tone) laminate top on my Yamaha!! I???ve had at least 20 solid tops in my 34 years of playing and none I MEAN NONE! Sound as good as this FG335.

After having the FG-335 a month and playing it next to my Martin HD28 (which I reviewed here two years ago). I have decided that the HD28 can be sold to pay bills. DONE!!! I will buy one more FG 335 as a backup. These can be had for around 150 to 200 bones. The beauty is, they are not the collector items of the Nippon Gakki???s like my FG75. I did also steal a Fg75 for $89 and it is almost mint. I???m a vintage Yamaha man now. Every old Yamaha I???ve played sounds better than anything out there under $2000. I go to Elderly about every three months and play all day long ??? You really have to pay a lot and buy a sweet old OM Martin to get the tone of these old Yamaha FGs. I know some of you Martin owners are going to have to scoff at this, but as a three time Martin owner myself, I???m sorry the proof is in the pudding. I???m coming off a little cocky here and forgive me for that. Please just play one of these and judge for yourself. I???ve always appreciated all of your reviews. Its kind of a sharing within a musical family I???ve always been thankful for. That is all this review is about too. I want you all to get the same blessing. Shoot, just add one of these to your stable. They are so cheap, you have nothing to loose. If you find one, but it has belly buldge like mine did, causing high action. Just get a bridge doctor from Stewmac. I will flatten the bulge and lower the action. You don't always have to get a neck reset.
Why are the Old Yamaha laminates so good? I don???t know, maybe it is their unique body geometry and bracing (larger lower bout and tighter waist than a dreadnaught). I know this, after spending thousands over three decades for THEE sound. I found it at only $173.00.

This Yami has pretty much defined my music style(Folk, Blues, etc..) since its the only guitar I owned untill a couple of years ago when I bought another 12 string(Yamaha of course) It has a massive vintage sound that can be both warm and rich or bright and edgy depending on what type of strings used, and how the instrument is played. I generally use GHS phospher bronze extra lights. I get a nice Neil Young "My, My, Hey, Hey(Out of the Blue) sound out of it. Playing near or on the neck gives a great round warm sound and down by the bridge is bright and percussive.

I've worked with number of professionals and their jaws never fail to drop when I tell them how much I paid for the guitar when it was new.
I go to the music store every few months to see what's new and for 30 years I haven't found a reason to replace my Yamaha. I would have to go into therapy if it were lost, stolen or damaged.

It is a great guitar. it's a dreadnought with a gloss finish and it has yamaha tuners that are great. I rarely have to tue it. it has a rosewood neck with 20 frets with 14 accesible frets. This guitar was made in taiwan and was my dads who bought it in the late 1970's. Even though it was a laminate top, it sounds great.

It is a very basic dreadnaught guitar. Made in Taiwan. Mahogany back/sides and I think a spruce top. I know lots of people say laminated, but the end grain on the top anyway appears to extend through the cross-section, which would indicate solid. I think it was made in 1982, and perhaps they made it differently from year to year. I received it in 1983 as a 13th birthday gift from my grandmother. Other's have come and gone, but this one will be buried with me.
Sound
:
9
I play mostly folk-based acoustic fingerstyle (Bruce Cockburn, Leo Kottke, James Taylor) and it suits me pretty well. I think a wider neck would be a little better for that. I had the neck reset and the action adjusted and it plays as well as many Taylors I have picked up off the wall at guitar center. It can be a little muddy sounding when strummed hard. Sustain is unremarkable, and the volume could be better for a dreadnaught. I have trouble hearing myself when playing with others. I installed a K&K sound Mini-western transducer pickup under the bridge, and it sounds nice plugged in.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
Action was a bit high when i first got it, and that discouraged me for a little while. also, it benefits from lighter strings. I use d'addario exp custom lights (light set, but .011 and .014 on the top) and rarely have to change them out. after resetting the neck and a new nut and saddle, it plays much better, but i woudln't go so far as to say it plays like an electric. Finish is Ok, i really don't remember what it was like new. I had it in its case for years and years, and when i removed it, it had aged to a wonderful warm amber color. It honestly sounds better than some brand new Taylors and Martins I have played. You can't "make" an old guitar.

As others have mentioned, this thing is an absolute tank. Think dreadnaught, as in "battleship". Over the last 23 years, its been overseas, its been in storage, toted around from pillar to post in that ridiculous paper-bag of a case it came with, and only has a few dings and scratches to show for it. No cracks or finish checking or anything that isn't completely self-inflicted. Its got that elusive trait "character" I think upgraded tuners would be my next move. Not sure whether i would use it without backup, but i bet i could.

I have been playing off and on since about 1983. "rediscovering" this guitar a couple of years ago inpired me to take it up much more seriously, and I am soon to purchase my first high-end guitar, a Martin. It has mostly sentimental value to me, since my dearly departed grandmother gave it to me, i will never sell it. If it were stolen, I might buy another one, but it wouldn't be "the same". I can't think of a better first guitar for the money - you would have to spend 10x that on a Martin or Taylor before you could really quantify the difference.

It is the best sound I have ever heard from any acoustic with the price less than $2000. I am not a very good guitar player, but I have a very good guitar sound judgment. When I was purchasing my FG-335 thirty years ago, I compared the sound of my FG-335 to an array of other Yamaha FG guitars in the same warehouse, and making sure that I had picked the best among the best. My brother heard the awesome sound of my FG-335, and he was a serious guitar player who insisted what he had should be better than mine. i am the original owner of a 1979 Yamaha FG-335 Left-hand dreadnought model. i believe it was made in Japan back in '79. not too many features as this is an entry-intermediate model. i think i paid $199 + tax back then.

i just can't figure it! i thought this guitar sounded great in 1979. after putting it away for 15 years in it's original cheap chipboard case without any humidification and just taking it back out in 2005 (i put new strings on it, of course), it's sounds like a very expensive guitar...really! it has a big, big sound almost like a mini jumbo...why? i don't know. i just think there are many of these older yamahas which have exceptional tone and sound. if you flatpick aggresively, you don't need an amp. i wouldn't sell this guitar because i'd only get around $150 for it and honestly, after trying some $1500 martins or taylors, i'd rather keep this vintage yamaha because of the big, deep sound.

mine is still all original and holding up well. but the mfgr. used cheap materials for the nut and bridge. i still have them in place and will build and replace with bone material when i get the time...that should really make this guitar better than it already is. the neck is still true and straight. the body has not split or cracked after 26+ years.

My Dad told me about a nice Yamaha acoustic in a antiques warehouse just outside Leicester in December 2004.It turned out to be a FG-335,quite well used - but to me thats a good sign - it means its been loved!
In the 70s/80s I used to have a FG180 I sold in 1986.I had always regetted doing that. This was as near as I'd ever seen to that guitar.
The old adage that "they don't make 'em like these anymore" is so true here..I believe from its number this is around about a 1977 one(?),made in Taiwan.

This is the guitar I play around the house but I have also gigged with it,using it for a couple of "thrashy" songs in my set.I've had a Fishman pick-up put in it.Its short of sustain but very inspiring.
I also used it on a joint gig with a Leicester band called Ist.Thorugh their congas, electric bass and another acoustic player it cut through really well,I really dug in and got some nice lead work out of it.I likened it that night to the acoustic equivalent of a Telecaster electric,it had that short, cutting, twangy quality with the band.Very useful..
I sit doodling on it watching TV.
Late at night I sit on my bed and write songs on it.Most of my last six months songwriting output has been done on the FG-335.I even keep it by my bedside if its sleepless night or dreamlike inspiration strikes at 3AM..
..Its that kind of relationship..er..with a guitar lol!

Now this is where this thing shines! For a cheap guitar this thing sounds very good as it has a very mellow warm sound to it,especially with some D'Addario phosphor bronze mediums.I play mostly death metal and heavy metal but I'm very open and like to play all styles to increase my skills.Like I said though the sound is quite suprising and I'm glad I picked it up for something to mess around on.Probably be pretty good for fingerstyle since its got warmer tone to it.Still works great for chords and picking too.Now I don't think they make this model anymore although they make similar ones in the FG series and these guitars are amazing sounding for the price definetely worth checking out.

Well when I got this it was in horrendous shape. The neck was extremely bent out of shape, frets are quite worn down and buzzed at a few spots, and the nut was broke. So I worked on it not really worrying about it since I had got it for so little.First thing I bought a Bone nut and roughly sanded grooves for the strings then i adjusted the truss rod(took many turns haha) and worked from there.Put some strings on their and tuned it up but the nut wasnt low enough and It seemed to strum hard so after hours of carefully fine tuning the nut and sanding the bridge I got a perfect guitar in the end and I couldn't be happier! So properly setup these guitars play great.Although Yamahas are known to be well built and dependable this guitar was very neglected so it needed a little work but after it played great and I haven't had any problems with it.Neck is pretty thick compared to their newer necks which is the only thing that could use improving and some better machine heads as most Yamahas seem to have only ok ones.Finish is what you would expected very used but I don't mind it's only for around the house and quick jams with friends.

It is a fairly standard dreadnought sized guitar, I think that the construction is laminated wood throughout, but I can't say what wood were used or quote any of the specifications as there was no detailed brochure with it when I bought it. I's got a good chunky neck that plays a lot faster than it initially feels that it should. Everything is pretty much as you would expect on an entry level acoustic guitar.

:

THis was my first guitar, and at the time that I bought it I knew nothing about how a guitar should sound to a player. I never really compared it properly to another guitar until I wwas thinking about
replacing it years later and found it difficult to find another acoustic that sounded good enough to justify the expense of trading up. Depending on where you strum it can go from janlgy to quite mellow and is certainly good enough for folk, blues, and general rhythm work, it is also very good at doing early rock and roll if you clip in a sound hole pick up(and if you do,it does sound more authentic with cheap one rather than the hi tech modern type). It is still my only acoustic guitar (has been since 1981) and I am still looking to replace it when the right guitar comes along, but as I amnot using it for performance purposes I can take my time.

fit and finish were fine, I have not adjusted anythng since it was bought and it has worn in beautifully. This guitar was given new to my Dad by my Grandpa in 1981, two years before I was born. It's made in Taiwan. Spruce top, mahogany back and sides, all laminated, I understand. Gloss finish, and the top has taken on a little bit of an amber color due to the age. It stays in tune indefinitely. Very solidly built guitar, typical of Yamahas of this period, from my experience. I give it a 10 because it has all the features a workhorse or entry-level acoustic should have.
Sound
:

This is my favorite part of this guitar. :) It has a very "big" sound. The bass is full and rich, but still well defined, and the high end is much better than many acoustics I've played. I don't get the brittle high end some reviewers mentioned. Mine's fitted with 13-56 gauge strings. I use this guitar for a variety of styles, but it mainly occupies the bluegrass flavored side of my shows. Works well for rhythm as well as leads, and has good volume to boot. I plan on having some sort of pickup system installed on it. Hopefully I can find one that captures the beauty of this guitar's tone. As for comparisons to better guitars, I've A-B'd this one with my 1958 Martin D-18. The overall tone of these guitars was very different. The Martin has a little more detailed high end, but the Yamaha seemed to have a stronger bass. I know this isn't really comparing apples to apples, but the Yamaha compares very well to a guitar valued ten times more. Due to the Martin's age and value, it rarely leaves the house. I have am Ibanez acoustic as well, but the Yamaha is my number 1 acoustic. I give it a ten because it sounds better than any comparably priced guitar I've played, and as well as some more expensive ones.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
This guitar was set up with 13-56's at the store, and that's all that has ever been on it. The action is s little high, but it works well for my style of playing and I haven't bothered to mess with it. Some people like to knit-pick in this section, but I'm not going to. This is a well-built, solid guitar and mine doesn't have the fret finishing problems others have mentioned. The woods are beautiful and getting even more-so with age. I won't take off points for the higher action because I like it.

Every Yamaha I've seen has been built like a tank. This one has withstood plenty of playing, especially in the last 6 years, and has very minor scratches to show. It was left fully tuned up, in it's case, with 13's for about 5 years. That's a big no-no, but when I opened it up 8 years ago, it was in tune with no action problems. When I tell people that, they think I'm lying but it's the honest-to-goodness truth. That's durability. It has held up to live playing, and I'll play it live until my Dad asks for it back.

I've been playing almost 9 years. My dad let me have this one as he doesn't play any more. My uncle also received and identical one at the same time as my dad. I've played both, and I like mine a little better, possibly because it's more "played-in." The only modification I've made is adding a strap button on the heel. If it were stolen or lost, my whole family would go through a grieving period, then we'd form a posse to track the thief down if it were stolen, or find another if it was lost. I't more like a sister than a guitar, really. I love the sound. I wish it had a pickup system, but I can fix that pretty easy. Besides, the pickups of 2004 sound a little better than the ones from 1981. Some people don't play theirs live because it isn't a high-dollar guitar, but I don't have any inhibitions about it. It sounds better than the guitars a lot of people I play live with. The fact that I could buy 10 more like mine for one of theirs makes it even better. Besides, many people I play for wouldn't know the difference any way. If you find one of these, my advice is to buy it. I think you'll be glad.

The guitar was made in 1978 or 1979, in Japan. It has a spruce top joined at the center. Unfortunately, it did not have the three-piece back, the rosewood sides, or the mother of pearl inlays of the FG-340 that I wanted but which was not available lefthanded.
Instead, it has mahogany sides and back, rosewood frets, and standard Yamaha hardware everywhere else. Terrific value for the money, then or now.
Sound
:
10
As so many others reviewers exclaim, the sound on this guitar is nothing short of remarkable. It has given Martins and Takaminis it has been pit against all the competition they wanted - and then some. It seemed - and still seems - impossible to get the quality of tones from it one can, whether live or recorded. Early on I found D'Addario Silk & Steel strings best suited my playing, its relatively high action, and my ear, which gave it a bright and ringing intonation that anyone who heard it fell in love with. However, unlike some others (who have sung of the rich, mellow sound that has come to theirs over time), mine seems to have lost a bit of the original clarity over the past 24 years. Perhaps if I switched strings I could recapture it. (Suggestions anyone?) In spite of this it still is lovely, whether finger-picked, flat-picked, or strummed to anything from blues to overtone-laden Kotke-esque compositions of my own.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
The factory action was a little high, left untouched. After reading others' success with a professional lowering I am inclined to consider it, as it looks there is room for it without inducing fret buzz. Fit and finish were and remain flawless in every regard but for the edges of the fretboard, where the fretwires protrude just a bit uncomfortably if one fixates on it. Beyond that, it does not seem possible that Yamaha could have put so much quality into so comparatively inexpensive a guitar.
Reliability/Durability
:

My FG-335 has been the definition of reliability and durability, surviving a couple of minor mishaps and much playing under some degree (or greater) of influence. No matter where I've taken it and what I've put it through it has not changed one bit, and once tuned will hold it indefinitely - which just blows me away. I've never really recklessly abused it, but its been played high and low across the US, enjoying many happy hours being sawed on in a hammock in Hawaii overlooking the beach. Many more played not on but literally *in* the ocean, wading around in the surf strumming the sun to bed to the delight of strolling vacationers (whose enjoyment of golden strains brought to them over the rush of waves by a Maui breeze caused them to universally believe I was a better guitar player than I am).

Overall, the FG-335 is such a fundamentally sound guitar that I have looked at and *not* bought any number of others costing many times what it did that did not offer an advantage to warrant it. I've been playing for real since I bought the FG-335 almost 25 years ago, it having been preceded by a rental I took lessons on as a kid and a catalogue-purchased righty my sister handed down that I reworked to play lefthanded. My favorite thing about the guitar is the way it fits me physically, like a glove. There is nothing not to like about it; the only thing I would have preferred would have been the eye-appeal of the FG-340 my roomie had. I cannot imagine life without it, that is how much a part of mine it has been. And, I hope, remains.

This is a late 70s Yamaha FG-335. Spruce top, mahogany back and sides. Very plain guitar, shaped somewhat like a Martin D-28 but a little narrower, which I really like. The neck is also slightly smaller than my D-35 and much easier to play. Unlike most Yamahas, the action came relatively low.
Sound

I have a beautiful 1972 Martin D-35, and guess what? This guitar doesn't sound as good! Well, actually, it sounds as good to me in a different way. This guitar does have a beautiful, slightly treble-dominated sound that I love more every time I play it. It hangs on the wall in my office, and I play it during lunch are right after work. The sound is full and rich, but could use a little more bass. However, as I said before, I love the sound of this guitar. And if you like strong treble, you will love this guitar.

I've been playing since 1976 (is it 27 years already?). If this guitar was lost or stolen I would try to find another. It has a unique combination of beautiful sound and excellent ergonimics and fits me like a glove. I'd half to chase down the theif and do bad things, since this guitar is more of a family member than an "instrument". I love the shape and sound. I also love the fact that I can throw it in the guitar or take it on the plane without fear of ruining it. I wish it had more bass. I wish it was a Martin, since I am partial to American craftsmanship, but I give all credit to the folks at Yamaha for producing a wonderful guitar at an excellent price. Besides, you could buy 5 of these and still come out ahead. If you can find one, buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Built in '79, looks like a two-piece spruce top but I'm told it's a laminate. A basic low-end acoustic with high-end kudos.
20 fret neck with dot in-lays.
Basic Yamaha stock tuners.
I'm rating it a 9 for the simple fact that for a road warrior you don't need the frills...it's only eye candy.

The sound on this projects like no other. Highs, lows, mids, they are all there. I play all styles, from classical (with nylon strings) to intros for metal songs on stage, to blues. The guitar shines in all aspects.

The action is so sweet that lead playing (especially blues) comes as second nature without having to "think" the guitar. She plays like butter. It came from the factory like this.
The fit of this guitar is outstanding for the price. Mentioning the price shouldn't come into it... who cares what it costs. If it works, go with it.

The hardware is as solid as the day I got her. (and she's seen some abuse)

Been playing for 32 yrs. I also have an '81 gibson flying "V", '80 Lado Solo 1 and a '82 Carvin V220.
The reason I was originally interested in this guitar was because it is a lefty, and I didn't want to change the strings and nut to suit my left-handedness. I had been having trouble finding lefties at the time so when the opportunity presented itself I couldn't refuse. In no way was I expecting to get this type of quality out of this guitar, it was just a spur of the moment thing... talk about luck!
If lost I would be shattered. No two guitars are the same and as good as these are I don't think I could replace her.

Basic dreadnaught guitar. No frills. Purchased new in 82. Yamaha says it is all laminate. It was my first "Real" guitar. I bought it after playing many instruments it was the easiest to play and had the best sound to a rookie.

I am a folksy player and it souds great around the campfire, in church and in my room. Notes are clear and true. The overall sound is rich and full.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The main reason that I bought it was because it was so easy to play. I later learned from friends that were semi-pros that the "action" was very low with absolutly no distortion even when played hard.
The finish is nice but little things were obvioulsy not a high priority. Like the binding is "feelable" and the fret ends are also not quite flush. Nothing that affects reality and things I never even noticed untill I campared it to a Taylor.

After 20 years I now own a Taylor 12 string that I don't deserve. Every one I know that has played my Yamaha has compared it to much more expensive guitars. My Taylor is a custom Maple and I spent many years shopping. Mainly because even low end Taylors were no better sounding or playing than my Yamaha. I plan on keeping it forever. If for some reason I needed to replace it I fell it would take at least a 600 series Taylor to beat it.

This guitar is a no frills type of guitar. I have owned it since it was purchased new in 1980 by my grandmother as a gift to me and my sisters. The Tuners are OK but the B-string tuner does have some slipage. Original guitar did not come with any kind of sound reinforcement. I did install a hybrid system a few years ago (Crown Condenser Mic by the sound hold and a Fishman thin line tranducer in the bridge) It was a pricy system to install but worth it for it captures a lot of this guitars great tones. The model I have is just a standard dreadnought model. The plastic pegs that are in the bridge are kind of warn but still hold up.
Sound
:

I play a lot of fingerpicking types of songs and this guitar is solid when it comes to sound. I used 13 guage acoutic guitar strings which bring out a warmth on all ends of the sound spectrum. The sound is rich and full. I have had many comments from people that this guitars sound rivals that of many higher end acoustics.
I run my hybrid system through a Fishman Acoustic Blender system. I normally do not use any effects for I like the natural sound of an acoustic. The hybrid system (mic & tranducer) really pick up the tones of this guitar.
Even playing high up on the neck the innotation is very good and well balanced.
The only gripes that I have is with a lot of fast strumming the sound can get muddy. And if you are into very low, alternate tunings this guitar does not perform well. I tried playing "The Wedding Song" by Paul Noel Stokey on this guitar where you have to tune your guitar down to the key of C and it's impossible to play. The sounds gets too muddy or fartish (if you will)
If this guitar should ever be stolen or burned in a fire, I would be the saddest man on the planet.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
The string action from the factory was very high and made this guitar a little bit intimidating to play. When I had my hybrid system installed the fellow who did the work lowered the action for me. Even with a lower action the sound stil was not sacrificed and makes playing this guitar very easy. (even with my 13 guage acoustic strings)
I have had people comment that with the low action this guitar is very easy to play.

I have played this guitar live and in the studio and it has worked well for me. From all my playing the finish has worn a bit by the sound hole and I have had 3 fret jobs done on this guitar since I first got it back in 1980.
I'm a klutz and so far this guitar has survived me. One time I was taking it off and I was standing underneath a cieling fan. Yup you guessed it, this got caught in the blades but still survived.

I bought the FG 335 in 1977 for #70 - my first guitar! Spruce top, mahogany back and rosewood fretboard as far as I am aware. Bog standard steel tuning pegs. All in all an above average entry level guitar in my view. At the time I never imagined I would still love the thing 25 years on!
Sound
:
9
I can't remember how the guitar sounded when I bought it. It was as much as I could do to learn a chord! However, 25 years on and it sounds rich and mellow to strum, especially so for jazz style rythmn playing. The top E & B strings sound a bit brittle toward the 12th fret, but that maybe as much to do with the very low action I use as anything else.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
8
The action was a little high when I bought it and got worse as the years rolled on and I failed to get the thing set up properly. However, with an accumulation of knowledge over the years I have corrected the action, shaving down the bridge and the nut and adjusting the truss rod. These days it plays like an electric! Perfect intonation, very little fret buzz and a remarkably full sound given the low action and the extra light strings I use. Some of the frets are a bit worn but not so much as I need to change them.
The G tuning peg has had to be refitted on a number of occasions but apart from that and fret wear (to be expected after 25 years) very little deterioration has resulted. Testament to the finish is my accidental use of oven cleaner to polish the body some 15 years ago - I thought it was funiture polish! It still looks good.

This thing is rock solid. It was thrown around the room on a number of occasions during my late teens / early 20s but it's still in one piece and looks like an old master. I treat it with a bit more respect these days...

That this guitar is still my favourite acoustic after 25 years says it all. I've been through numerous electric guitars, my preference is for Tele's, and use a Tanglewood electro acoustic for gigs but I always return to the Yamaha when I'm writing songs or home recording or jamming with friends.
I recently bought a #600 Simon & Patrick Pro Mahogany in the mistaken view that my FG 335 was past it, but I took it back after a day when I realised the wood on the neck had shrunk exposing protruding frets at the side. I was happy for the excuse because the S&P sounded no better than my trusty FG335. You don't always get what you pay for.

I have an FG335SB that I purchased used in the mid-80s. It has a beautiful blue-green finish that has deepened over the years. The purfling has aged from white to a nice ivory. It has what looks like abalone fretboard inlays (5th, 7th, 9th, double at octave, 15th) and side fret markers. The pins have black dots and are probably not original. I built a custom bridge and nut to replace the original. One of the tuners was lost over the years and has been replaced with a generic type tuner. It has a fat neck that I don't care for but has probably helped to keep this guitar solid.
Sound
:
9
I use it for bluegrass, finger picking, and rhythm. It responds particularly well to the finger picking, and with the low action, it's great for acoustic leads. It doesn't sound quite as well for slide or rhythm. It lacks a little on the high end, but this is probably because of the strings (bronze medium). All in all, it has a good, rich sound that is surprising.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
8
I bought this guitar used, and the only problem at that time was a worn fretboard. It had no other flaws as far as I can recall. The action was medium when I bought the guitar, but I built a very low nut and bridge from hard maple, and now the action is terrific with no buzz.

This guitar is extremely dependable. The finish has held up remarkably well, considering how many times my children have played with it and banged it around. Over the years, one of the tuners came loose and disappeared while in storage. Other than that, the hardware is very solid. This guitar has been through a lot in the last fifteen years, and I am amazed at how well it has held up. It's one of the best built guitars I've seen.

I have been playing since 1973. In 1987, after my Ibanez "Dove copy" was destroyed in an accident, I needed another guitar quickly. I went to a nearby music shop intending to buy a brand new high-end guitar, but couldn't find anything as visually appealing as my Ibanez was. As I was about to leave, I saw this one in the "used" section and immediately chose it just because of it's color. The shop owner told me that I would never regret buying this one, and he was right.
One of the things I like best is how I can put it down and pick it up a few days later and play it without any tuning or adjustments. I also love the custom low action; other people have told me it plays like an electric. I wish it had an adjustable bridge and a little more inlay, but I really have no complaints. If something happened to it, I wouldn't try to replace it, as I don't think I could ever find another one.

Mine is a late 70's model, Taiwanese made FG 335. I've been playing her for about a year and a half now. It's got a great relatively-beefy V-neck and smaller frets. Rosewood fretboard, mohogany neck, back, and sides. The tuners work fine.

The sound is great, period. The highs are crisp and there's plenty of bass and mids. People have complained that the highs are a little "harsh" or "brittle," but that is probably the strings that they're using. I use her for slide playing, fingerpicking, strumming--you name it. This guitar handles all of these tasks with ease.
A very good professional musician friend of mine uses two FG 335's from the same era and swears by them. The only guitar that he liked better than these was a $3500 Martin. I've heard that foreign guitars of this time period ended up using better woods than many American companys. With this kind of sound, I don't doubt it.

I basically play ballady kind of stuff and this guitar has a warm, rich sound. I find that using meduim gauge strings on this box yields the best tone witout hampering payabilty.
One day, a buddy of mine was commenting on how great this guitar sounded but added in a comment, "It's only a Yamaha though. There's no way that it would sound as good as my '65 Martin". My initial reaction was, "Of course", but...I just had to take him up on his challenge. :)
He brought his guitar with him the next day. We set up a mic in the studio and literally did a blind A/B comparison. I played the exact same riff on both guitars, out of his view and asked him to pick out which was his Martin. In the five tests that we did, he picked the Yamaha every time. No lie. That is one of the reasons I gave this guitar a 10. I love the tone and the test was the icing on the cake. I know all guitars are not the same so everybody's milage will vary but I'm totally pleased.

I bought this used so it wasn't in the greatest shape. There was a lot of old gunk on the fretboard and a few belt buckle scratches on the back. The action was also very high due to a bowed neck, probably due to poor storage. After a good cleaning and a minor truss rod adjustment, it was almost as good as new. To give a rating on this wouldn't be completely fair though because the condition of the guitar was not the fault of Yamaha.

This guitar has been everywhere and then some. It's dependable and rugged and stays in tune really well. Although not having a back-up is a not a great idea, I feel comfortable enough that I could go without a back up, if I were in a bind.
The only concern that I have is that screws are loose on the truss rod cover, due to wear and tear. The guitar is about 15 or 16 years old.

I feel that I really lucked out buying this guitar. I've checked the Yamaha website and they're no longer producing the FG-335. If it were stolen, I'd be extremely pissed because I obviously can't replace it. For a lower end acoustic, it's been to hell and back and stood up to it. Yes, it's not a Martin, but to me, it's close enough...

I bought this used at a pawn shop because I needed a new "beater" guitar. It's a basic model acoustic, attractive, but no fancy stuff on it.

The sound is what sold me on this guitar. The highs are bright and clear (if maybe somewhat "brittle"), and the lows are rich and mellow. Fingerpicked, the sound is comparable to some low-end Taylors I've played. Strummed, the tone muddies a bit, but the sound is still quite good.

No flaws that I can see. Appears to be very well made.

This is a 20 year-old guitar, and it is still in fine fine shape. I'm sure it's been around the block a time or two. I've put a few dings in it myself (clumsy me). I don't think my rather fragile Seagull will look or play this nice after 20 years.

I've been playing 17 years (since I was a teen). I've owned a Sigma (my first guitar), a Larrivee, a Seagull, and I've played MANY other brands and models. For the price and the durability, this guitar is tops! They don't make them anymore, but if you see one used for a good price, it would make an excellent guitar for a beginning player, or a good second guitar for an advanced beginner. It has enough sound quality to satisfy most casual guitar players, and is FAR SUPERIOR to any of the low-end models being sold these days.

This is a basic dreadnought accoustic guitar with very few frills. Very good finish and quality binding

I use this guitar with a Lawrence pickup and a DOD acoustic processor. Alone, it sounds ok. Through the gear, any guitar would sound good.

The only complain that I have is that the neck is like holding a 2x4.

I have had this guitar for about for about 7 years and with regular string changing it has done the job for me. I rarely use an acoustic any more, but when I need it on stage, it works when I need it

I have playd for over 25 years and have owned many guitars. This is the fourth acoustic that I have owned. The only reason that I bought it was that my '73 takaminie was smashed. If it were lost or sotlen I would probibly be on the hunt for a new Martin or Taylor. This is a good low cost guitar but that is about it.
