Glossy black w/ ivory accents, Dreadnought body shape, Yamaha Tuners, Fat "V" shape neck, early 1980's I think, made in Taiwan, 20 frets, Pretty sure it's a solid top...

Sound : 9
I play mostly Blues/pop type stuff... Suits every style good. Full and loud. Buzzes a lot because of a rattly tuner, but I like it that way. Sounds amazing.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
Not sure about the factory set up, and mine looks like the saddle has been replaced(I can see a shim in there) but the action is medium and it's not too bad. Could use a few adjustments that I'm not brave enough to make on my own.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Built like a tank. Everything on this guitar is solid and tough.

Customer Support : 10
Not sure, but I've heard Yamaha has great customer service.

I've been playing off and on for 13 years. I traded a Squier strat for this and I think I got the better end of the deal. If it was stolen or lost, I'd be sad. I'd look for another one. I might upgrade the tuners eventually and get it set up professionally.

The guitar itself is stock, with yamaha tuners, a big, thick neck, and a laminated spruce top. 20 frets, solid construction bridge, and a quality truss rod in the neck. no built in tuner or eq.
The neck is a bit thick, but I've never known anything different, so playing thin necks feels a bit sickly to me. 8/10

Sound : 10
The sound is FANTASTIC. This was my first guitar, and though I have been through a number of guitars since starting, I always come running back to this one. The sound is rich and vibrant at the neck - I haven't heard a muddy tone out of it since my first month of playing guitar. When played at the bridge, you get a bright sound that will outshine any Taylor guitar on the market. I have used this guitar for everything from folk to rock, and it never disappoints. Ever. I have no complaints whatsoever about the sound. 10/10.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
adjust the truss rod to lower the strings to your preference. You most likely won't have to worry about it again.

10/10

This guitar will not die. it is covered in bangs and bruises, but it keeps holding in there regardless. It fell off the top bunk in my dorm... I think I heard it laugh. When you get this guitar, keep in mind that it may very well be the last steady guitar you ever use. If you adjust the action just right, there won't be a need for anything else. This guitar has been played by my father and I (respectively) for 30+ years, and the only thing even coming close to being legitimately messed up is that the casing is loose on one of the tuning machines. And that's just because I'm too lazy to tighten the screws on it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
N/A. Never needed any help with it.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing this guitar for 8 years. If this guitar were stolen or lost, I would cry, then I would hunt down the jackass that stole it. If I wasn't able to locate said jackass, I would most likely purchase another, though I don't see how it would ever be the same. This guitar has a spiritual quality for me - it means much more to me than any other guitar ever could.

Occasionally I wish that there was a built in pickup, but that's never really become a problem - I primarily use the guitar for recording, and Miking it always has a better outcome tonally anyhow.

If not for this guitar, I would likely not be pursuing the classical guitar career that I am today. it gave me a start - even though I was inexperienced and my fingers were weak, it gave me powerful, clean tone... honestly, if I had a guitar that sounded any worse, I probably would have become too frustrated with the pace of the craft and given up. This guitar was a joy to play from day 1. I simply cannot praise it enough.

Would have to rate this as a solid 7. Nothing is actually spectacular on a stock model but everything works like it should. Thru the years the wood has really turned a deep yellow and fret wear has been minimal yet constantly played. Like others state it is a TANK. For construction materials consult the yamaha archive website but you have to like a thick neck to appreciate this guitar. I don't know how they did it to make them sound so good, but other manufacturers should emulate this guitar.

When I purchased in 1987 used for $125 I was totally pleased however thru the years I started searching for another accoustic and nothing rivaled it except guitars costing $1500 plus. Could never justify making the purchase in my mind. See below, but now that I have modified it, I don't think I'll be purchasing anything. For the money especially, nothing even comes close to this. Great balance between the strings, with excellent articulation and fabulous sustain. Overall volume has more than doubled with no loss of clarity, in fact that has improved from that old "muddy" sound when strummed hard.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
When I got the guitar until only 3 months ago the action was good and very playable. Recently I was looking at Zagar guitars and I connected with Dennis Zagar's approach to modifying a guitar. I figured what the heck, I can do this(been messing around with repairs for over 35 years), so I gave it a go. I installed a graphtec nut, a tusc compensated saddle, and bone bridge pins, and also installed a set of Elixir Phosphor Bronze lt/med strings. I modified the guitar setting the action extremely low, the equivalent to a luthier set up for an electric, and the results were outstanding. The sound rivals any guitar I have played in over 43 years of playing and I have played all of them out there. The action is better now than on any accoustic guitar I have ever played. I also just modified a Yamaha FG 170 in the same fashion and the owner from the mid 1970's stated it never played as easy nor sounded "like this." No more sore fingers and more of a desire to practice was the result.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Like I stated earlier, this guitar is a tank and withstand just about anything. Can't even count the number of times mine has been bumped into something or fallen, yet it still keeps going....kind of like the energizer bunny. I am 56 and I am sure this guitar will outlive me and still have tons of life yet...and I play 2 to 3 hours a day! Totally dependable and would not hesitate to use it on a gig or in the recording studio...I know I have. Everything on this baby is rock solid!

Never had to use it so no opinion

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing over 43 years and own a 78 Strat, a 65 Hagstom I, Ibanez bass(mid 80's) and the Yamaha. I didn't really appreciate this guitar much and took it for granted as a decent mid priced accoustic. Now if it was lost or stolen I would be devestated and would replace it right away. There is nothing sonically I would change as this was the elusive "sound" I had been on a quest to find. I am currently looking for others on e-bay.
