I have played for years with various guitars including some top end Ovations ( which I can never get on with sue to the dished back ). I play MTV style Acoustic pop, funk and blues. When I first saw this guitar I couldnt believe how cool it looked...and when i plugged it in...I simply was astonished with what came through the Senheiser headphones I was using.....the Yamaha ones included were a little thin but through a really good set of phones you could get lost in your own world and still be in the shop when it closes !!!!...it was simply amazing.....the EQ was really easy but found flat to be nice...or just a bit of a nudge on the bass. The Reverb brings it alive and is just as I said before ...amazing..
I bought my first one and plugged it through my AER 60 at home and wondered where the bass had gone...this was rectified when it went rhough my PA...some simple EQ ing and it was all back and sounding peachey !!!...I just stuck it rhough my stereo chorus and job doneand even better you can crank it and get NO FEEDBACK !!!

The guitar came from the factory as little high for my liking but i de tune to Eb and play with .13's so only a minor adjustment got it right.
Does the guitar contain any flaws....nope...the only thing I can criticise is the gig bag which the handle fell off on one side...which i can live with.
I have been gigging this guitar HARD OUT probably twice a week since 2005 I think and its been that reliable that I bought a second one in case I broke a string so I wouldnt have to change EQ's....and the second one is exactly the same, bullet proof, identical set up, same sound...its like a clone of the first and there was two years between purchases.

As I said before Ive been cranking this puppy since 2005 up to twice a week and showing it no mercy, I bought the spare SLG in case I broke a string only and have been doing the same with that one... I have a very 'choppy' funk style which my old Fender strat didnt like very much and I just cant seem to find either of their weak spots !!!. The only amendment Ive made was to Araldite standard strap lock fittings onto the angle style ones fitted...even they havent fallen off but I can take credit for that...sorry Yamaha !!!. I would have no doubt that if I took the top and bottom off either of them and used them as a cricket bats they would still play perfectly afterwards !!!. Sometimes I can get through a gig with only minimal tuning and if I tune it before it goes away at the end of the night, quite often its still in tune when I take it out...doesnt seem to be affected by temp or humuidty...what the hell have they made this out of ???

The SLG-S is a weapon....if you dont mind a bit of EQing on the desk, the front of house will sound fantastic. If you want to sit at home and plug in some good headphones you will be blown away. Since buying these guitars I havent used anything else, studio or live. I have played with them in pubs clubs and also huge concerts...virtually impossible to get feedback even if you crank the monitors !!!!...the only effect I ever use is a BOSS Stereo Chorus to thicken it up and thats it. The only other advantage to having this guitar is it looks super cool and when your playing it catches everyones attention, it almost amusing to watch peoples reaction and its guaranteed 'WOW & COOOOOOOOOOOOOL" comments at the end of the night...so even if you are rubbish at playing you'll be remembered for your guitar !!! BONUS !!!. One amusing thing is that my mate forgot his strat and plugged in my spare SLG -S into his Fender electric guitar amp and he had it screaming like a strat all night...he now has one as well and gets the most amazing sounds from it...so now weve got three SLGs in the band !!!. Simply this thing is amazing, every guitarist should have one and if someone tells you they are anything but brilliant is either daft, deaf, is jealous cause they cant afford one or have never heard or tried one. I would be amazed if one ever came up second hand !!!

It's a 3/4 scale neck with a tiny headstock and a composite hollow frame that represents the bouts on an acoustic. The upper frame unscrews in 3 seconds and stows in the bag (supplied). The whole thing can be carried onto a plane, or put on the back shelf of a car - takes up almost no space at all. There is a piezo pup, a two position reverb (more about that later!), an on-off switch, volume and tone controls, a 1/4" jack and a headphone jack. The neck is quite similar to my acoustic, but it feels rough and cheap on the back. Board and frets are good, as are the tuners. Strap buttons double dty as the screws that hold the top frame in place. That's bout all.

You have to understand that this is a niche instrument: it allows me to play late at night without disturbing the missus. I can lug it around on vacation and I don't need to be precious with it. I therefore only expect it to sound 'right' - it doesn't have to sound good. It is a tool for a specific job, not my pride and joy. All of that said, it is pretty adequate. Not a very good tone, and I wouldn't record with it, but you could use it live (if it is a bit fragile). Sounds OK. DOes what it says on the tin. I do all styles, from punk-folk thro to folk-punk. That's fingerstyle Minutemen, Billy Bragg, heavy f----- Dylan, to put you in the picture.

As I said, the board and frets are good. Action medium high, nut cut for medium weight strings. Go to lights and it'll buzz. The rest of it is built down to a budget, and it shows. I'll still give it a decent score though, cos I appreciate the way the guys at YMI have got their priorities right.

WOuld only use it on a gig if I was starving. That's not what it's about. It is flimsy, and feels it. The top frame waggles around a lot, which is off-putting. The dowells that fit the frame into the guitar need a couple of dollops of epoxy to sort that out. I've had this thing a year now (used) and played it for about 300 hours. Just now the reverb's at fault. The guitar plays OK w/out reverb, but if you turn it on you get a loud howling sound, then, if you strike a chord the whole thing shuts down. It's strange. Oh well, I don't care, cos I can do w/out reverb, I suppose. It's just annoying and a bit of a concern about the overall durability.

Been playing off and on since '83 (I was a late starter). I've gigged exactly once and recorded exactly once. I suckk - always have done. I don't get much time to play and have long periods off, but I still think I can tell what's what. I play a Yamaha LJ16 acoustic (great guitar!!!), an A style Ozark mandolin, an F style Weber mandolin (get one!), Jap Fender Tele, Squier P-Bass, and a modded Epiphone LP Special. The Yam Silent is a unique machine that very definately fits a specific purpose, and, with that in mind, if it were lost I would replace it in a heartbeat. Cheap too.

Body-less steel strung acoustic guitar, designed to be plugged in using its built-in pickup and preamp that includes a two-setting reverb. It 'eats' batteries, so allows a wall-wart type power supply to be plugged in. There's also a headphone socket so you can experience the sound all to yourself, using the provided ear-bud type phones. The lack of a body is made up for by a fitted bottom frame and a detachable top frame that make up the acoustic guitar shape around an otherwise straight 'stick' neck/body.

Acoustically, the guitar is very quiet (hence the 'silent' tag) and the tone is not particularly rich or chiming. Plugged in the top end is quite good, although it does have the flap of a typical piezo-type pickup. The bottom end is the weakest area of the tone, as it sounds fairly false. Having said that, it is not a bad tone, its just not entirely realistic if that's what you are looking for.
The reverb does help a lot to make the sound more pleasing, although with just two preset sounds there's not a whole lot to trim.
I bought the guitar because I wanted something I could play solos on in a similar manner to a solid body electric guitar, and although that's an impossible task this guitar is the best I've come across in terms of

Construction-wise, it seems fairly well-built. However, I find it does not hang too well on a strap, as it tends to hang away from your body. You can remedy this by threading the strap through the frame before attaching it to the rear strap button, and it doesn't look too untidy. Still, this shouldn't be necessary and seems to have been overlooked at the design stage.
The frames fit quitae well, but have a matt finsh that seems to mark easily and looks messy.
I bought the guitar because I wanted something I could play solos on in a similar manner to a solid body electric guitar, and although that's an impossible task this guitar is the best I've come across in terms of slick action, tolerence of light strings and high fret access. It reaslly does allow you to do things that are very difficult on most acoustic guitars.

I hoped to gig this guitar but I've chickened out, as I'm not entirely convinced that I can cope with the sound. I'm sure it would suit less demanding applications, but there must be better options for live use - and I'll continue looking for them. However, for home entertainment and quiet practice, this is still a very useful acquisition.

I've been gigging for 30 years, but rarely with acoustic guitars. This just come anywhere close to my Taylor 314, but plays a whole lot easier. I need something else to fit my needs, so I wouldn't get one of these guitars for live use. If I was desperate for a travel guitar or quiet practice instrument I'd get one right away.
I wish it balanced better and sounded more realistic - especially the bottom end - but I guess I'm asking the impossible.
