Zager Zad50. Standard no frills Dread. Laminated mahogony back/sides etc etc.

After reading plenty of the hyped up reviews I purchased a used one and for quite some time thought I had a very nice sounding guitar. It was OK but definitely not what others were saying. Very loud for sure (if you like that sort of thing) and bright. Good for blues but any old beater is good for blues right!
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

Finish is definitely OK. On the body. The neck is where it gets untidy. Sharp fret edges. The frets are filed flat in certain areas and left as is in others. Really not very good but I didn't really notice until months after I bought it. The story continues. Also found a blue plastic (looked like a piece of cable tie) under the saddle! With some time spent on removing that, set up the neck properly, new strings etc sounded not too bad.

This is where it gets very interesting. I sold the guitar about a year after I bought it. Hard times. When things got better financially a few months later I was determined to buy a "real" guitar. I purchased a Martin D16-GT. I was a bit concerned I had paid too much for the Martin as I believed the Zager was almost as good for a fraction of the price. After about 6 months the Zager came up for sale so I bought it back from the guy I sold it to. Karma? Anyway, I put a new set of Martin strings on both and began my comparisons. This lasted about 5 seconds. Seriously. The reviews here that would have you believe a Zager sounds better than a Martin are totally unbelievable. The descriptions and wording used on the Zager site are repeated endlessly and is very good marketing and that's it. The Zager ZAD50 is what it is. Overpriced marketing. Martin has been around for 175 + years. Zager has been and gone in ? how many years. I rest my case.

Acoustic 6 string folk guitar. Full size dreadnought with clear lacquer finish. Solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides. Rosewood bridge and rosewood fret board. Sealed Grover tuners. Thin neck, 21 frets. Accessories included hardshell case, humidity meter, and guitar stand. Manufactured in 2008 in U.S.A. No onboard tuner or built-in electronics.

Guitar has bright and lively sound. Pretty good low-end "punch". Nice tonality for the price. I play mostly folk and country, some pop, and this guitar is definitely versatile. Very tight woodgrain on both the spruce top and mahogany back and sides. The scalloped X-bracing helps produce good volume when playing without a mike.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
6
The guitar came from the factory with low action which I prefer. Frets were hand filed. The routing on the saddle could have been better. The strings are at a steep angle between the saddle and the string pins. Time will tell if this will cause short string life and strings breaking frequently. I have had the guitar for 6 weeks and so far no problems in this area. One small finish blem on the side near the underside of the neck.

Guitar is suitable for live playing. Grover tuners look very durable. Finish appears durable and guitar came with a tortoise shell pickguard. Guitar came with only a bottom strap peg and it looks flimsy and weak. This will definitely require an upgrade. I would not hesitate to take this guitar on a gig.

I have been playing for 44 years. I am not a professional musician, merely a hobbyist. I own two other guitars, a vintage Gibson B25 and an inexpensive classical nylon string guitar. I would buy another Zager guitar if I were to lose this one. I do wish it had come with a second strap peg. I was very impressed with this guitar's appearance and tone. For the money, this instrument provides excellent value. It sounds and looks as good as Martins and Taylors that cost 3 times as much.

The ZAD 50 has a natural gloss finish. I have been shopping for a new acoustic guitar for over 2 years. It has a Rosewood fretboard and the neck is so easy to play and so much fun. Also I am an intermediate player who can play this guitar with so much more comfort than the Tacoma I currently have.

I play acoustic worship music and the tone on this guitar is rich and rings true. At first when I played it I did not like it. I tuned it and just kept playing for about 2 straight hours and it sounded better and better and needed very little retuning. It is just a great sounding guitar and i'm thoroughly impressed for buying a guitar that I had never played before.

I examined the guitar from head to toe looking for any flaws. The action is so low you barely have to put any pressure when holding the strings. The only thing that I had to get used to is the setup the strings are set a little further apart from each other than I am used to. This actually turned out to be a bonus for me because my fingers are a little wide. It also holds the tuning for a long time barely have I had to retune. But straight out of the case the guitar is very well built and you can tell Zager takes a lot of care with the product.

The ZAD 50 does not have any electronics or strap buttons. I am confident enough with this guitar to take this guitar without a backup. I have played the guitar hard and soft and it plays great. The finish is deep and shines like crazy. I am also thinking about buying a Zager for my son who is 15 and wants to play this all the time. Everything on this guitar is solid.

The customer support is a little different than I am used to. If you have questions you have to email the questions to Dennis. All my questions were answered very quickly and honestly. Everything that the website says about the guitar is true. Dennis is very helpful and they let you play the guitar and if you don't like it you can get your money back. They are great to deal with.

I compared this guitar to the Guild the Martin several other high dollar guitars and it sounded better than any of them. I basically became frustrated with looking for a guitar and decided to buy the Zager after several weeks of seeing the website. I already had a Tacoma EM9E7 and there is no comparison. The Zager blows it away. I would absolutely buy the Zager again if I were to lose it. The only thing I would change is I would have bought it with the electronics. I have been playing for over 3 years. This guitar has amazed me for the price and the fact that it was bought without ever playing it first.

All things you would expect from a high end guitar: solid spruce top, mahognay side & back, rose wood bridge & fret board, pearly inlay rosette, scalloped bracing, sealed tuners, etc. Try to appreciae the details and craftsmanship. This is truly an exquisite instrument. It also came with a stand and a digital tuner.

Full range sound and well balanced tune. Sweet melody when I do finger picking. (I think even my Husky likes the music!) I frequent guitar center in the area, and I feel that the sound quality of the ZAD-50 is comparable to those high end ones of $2k-3k in the stores.

Low strings, easy to play. This is where Zager guitars shine. Someone argues that is is just regular "setup" that you can git it done in local musical stores. WRONG! Do you think all auto mechanics are the same? or why do we need second opinion from medical doctors?

The web site has a lot of information. The video library (thru their "help" link) is very helpful. Whoelse can give you 100% money back guarranty. They also cover shipping. I am glad to be a owner of the ZAD-50.

I've been playing 26 years. I own 2 Taylor custom made acoustics and a Hohner 6-string in addition to my Zager ZAD-50. I'd definately buy another Zager, though that may prove difficult due to limited availability and Denny Zager's impending retirement next month. This guitar is easy to play and sounds great for recording or through a PA. I wanted a ZAD-80CE, but they were sold out. Very personable customer relations, effective communications and a no-nonsense, professional business transaction.

The sounds is what sold me. There is a great video of the instruments being played on the Zager site. I was mesmerized.
I am a voice teacher/singer. To me, it seems to be a perfect balance of a very bright core sound, surrounded by a mellow tone. It's what I look for as a singer/teacher.
I love what I've seen in action, seeing how people respond singing with this guitar. My students, all very different voices, all seem to be able to blend well with this instrument. It seems to bring their voices to life every time.
I've had the guitar a couple of weeks, and several of my singers came back the next week, grinning, asking if we could do some songs with the guitar again.

I've only had it a couple of weeks, but comparing it to my other guitars, including a nice Gibson, it is easily better made. It seems very solid.
I helped my wasband build harpsichords so I have a bit of an eye for good construction. My eye says this guitar is very carefully made.
I had several very good guitarists in my studio and they all seemed impressed and two are considering buying one for themselves.

Very, VERY nice people who believe in what they do and stand by what they make.

I've been playing guitar on and off for 35 years. I have a house full of instruments. This guitar and my much loved piano are tops. I am a professional singer and voice teacher and give workshops across the country.
This guitar has me waking up in the morning wanting to play. It is so easy to play. I was not blest with "guitarist hands". I can play chords I just can't get on my other instruments. And, as I said, the tone is so much fun to develop, there are so many colors, and the best guitar I can remember ever using for singing.

Zager guitars is a company that not only has excellent quality guitars but their service puts them above their competitors. I purchased a Zager made guitar for my husband's birthday. Immediately I received an email from the company offering assistance in purchasing the right guitar. Then they even followed up to make sure I knew it was on the way. It arrived right on time and it absolutely beautiful. The sound quality is smooth and crystal clear. Denny Zager is one of the few people that lets his passion for what he does shine in his company. I will definitely be getting our son a guitar from Zager when he is old enough to play. Thank you again Zager Guitars!

I've been playing for 34 years. I would for sure buy another from Mr. Zager. What I love most about the guitar is the sound and action. Simply a joy to play and listen to the wood sing in harmony; I can feel what I am hearing in the wood of this guitar; unlike so many cheap guitars out there with "name brands." I chose this guitar based upon the ovewhelming number of positive comments on Mr. Zager's web site, and watching the videos. I compared this guitar to everything GC has to offer (cheap and expensive). NOTHING I played at their shop sounded or played anywhere close to my ZAD-50, with the exception of the Taylor that was going for around $2,400.00.

I'm very happy with my guitar. It's the low-end zager model, and I decided to buy it because because what I gathered from other players online (well, some of them), is that it would be a very good sounding guitar for the price, and be easier to play. I used to play a little a few years ago and was always frustrated by bar chords in particular. They still frustrate me, but even thought I haven't played in years they are easier to make with this guitar sound better when I play them than any other acoustic I've played. Also, it in general sounds good to me, the customer service is phenomenal, there's no risk, and it came with a stand and extra strings. Pretty too. Even though i ended up spending more than I originally wanted, I'm happy with the purchase, and would recommend a Zager, especially to a beginner.

Gloss finish was without flaws. Guitar had been hand polished. Solid spruce top was of high quality, no glue lines evident. Frets are custom filed and crowned by Denny Zager. Body of Mahogany laminate, quality I would judge to be higher than in similarly priced Washburns. Grover tuning machines. Neck is bound, sound hole is very nicely appointed. Overall a stylish looking guitar. Pick guard tortise. Guitar built by Martin at Sigma factory, to Martin quality standards. Neck thinner in thickness enhances playbility, Neck very slightly wider gives ever slightly wider string spacing also makes guitar easier to play. For the price the features represent high value

The sound and playability reviews are what attracted me to this guitar in the first place. I was not disappointed. It honestly sounds as good as my friends 1973 high end Martin. He also has a nice Gurian and the sustain equals this. The sound is balanced high, mids and low end. It is hard to believe what Denny is able to achieve by doing a custom setup on a high quality production guitar. Amazing. He hand thins the bracing on the face of each guitar after hand filing the frets, adjusting nut and bridge height.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
The action is noticably easier to play. The finger pressure for chord formation is less than other guitars I have played and the slightly wider string spacing is forgiving. The finish on my guitar was flawless. I looked it over very carefully and could not find a flaw!!! The guitar had obviously been hand polished. No glue lines, nice wood throughout, not great wood mind you, but nice wood for the price. Right out of the box this guitar sings, comes with a picture of Denny playing it!!

Outstanding. I had originally ordered the Martin Sigma that Denny sets up with his easy play setup. The next day I noticed on his website that the pricing on the Zager 50 had been reduced, so I called to see if I could change my order to the 50. I think it is a little better guitar with it's solid spruce, slightly better tuners and enhanced neck design. Friendly, competant, No Problems, shipped that day. Refreshing people to do business with.

From a wife of a guy who owns 12 or more guitars, who has played them for over 30 years...THIS IS AN AMAZING instrument. He would tell you himself, but Jerry is disabled and playing has become difficult for him until THIS. The narrower neck, the close set strings, the weight... all of it, make him able to play and smile at the joy of it. The sound is beautiful AND Denny makes the whole experience very personal. I had asked him about the possibility of this being 'right' for Jerry's diminished hand strength and Denny answered immediately with all the info I could hope for. When it arrived, it was more beautiful than the pictures and it included strings, a tee-shirt, a stand, even a personal photo of Denny tuning it before shipping. My only regret is that we didn't go more top of the line. BUT we expect to go there very soon. THANK YOU DENNY ZAGER!!! Your detractors appear to me to be misinformed and without personal experience.

The ZAD-50 guitar is the standard dreadnought body using solid spruce tops, mahogany back and sides, and rosewood neck, fretboard and bridge. It is a solidly built guitar with scalloped bracing that is built to accommodate extra light strings and still achieve a full and rich projection. These guitars are set up using Denny Zager's "String Science Method" which is a customization of the bridge, saddle, and hand filed frets. The action is great. I have owned more expensive and less playable guitars in the past.
My ZAD-50 has a sunburst finish. I really like the look. It's got a great fit and feel. The only thing that I would change is I would probably go with a black finish on the back and sides with the sunburst top. Otherwise, I'm really quite happy with this guitar.
The Zager guitar line are made in Lincoln, Nebraska in the USA. That usually means you're going to pay at least a grand. I opted for no pickups. They do, however, offer electronics on both of their main models. The neck is thin, the frets are generous, and the strings are well spaced with Denny's "String Science". I like the gloss finish. It seems to be very well applied - we'll have to wait to see how it holds up over time, but I'm quite pleased. They included a guitar stand, t-shirt, extra strings, and some picks. I use a digital hygrometer in my case though I chose an after market case because I have a preference for a particular company. Zager Guitars offers cases for their guitars but they do not assume that everyone needs another case - so they are not included in the price of the guitar.

My ZAD-50 guitar was made this year... I believe it was even made this month. It sounds great - very even and balanced between bass, mids and treble. I could go for a little more bass, but it's got way more than my Dean or Washburn ever had. I like the projection. I like that I do not feel a need to add a pickup to it. It really projects well enough without it. I was a bit skeptical when I read about these guitars, but I do agree that they play as rich and full as Martins. The sound is bright, but not without balance. I haven't put any bluegrass strings on it yet, though I believe it will work quite well for bluegrass. I have used it for U2, Tom Petty, and old country (like Johnny Cash) songs. It really has a great resonant sound that fills up the body without sounding like it's stuck in or muffled by the body. Again, I wouldn't mine a little more pop to the bass, but it certainly has a balanced amount of bass. I'm really interested in trying the cedar body model after playing this one a while.

I addressed this already, but I'm quite amazed at how close and smooth the action is. I hadn't played for a number of years, but I was able to play for 2 1/2 hours the first night I had this guitar. The setup was perfect! Denny Zager puts some real time and work into these guitars. The tuning pegs are excellent, the saddle has been adjusted to optimal height, the strings are so close to the frets that it's a joy and ease to play. I haven't had much buzzing and I have been away from playing for 8 years! That's amazing. My model has no pickups, so that's not an issue.
Reliability/Durability
:
No Opinion
I don't know what the durability is. I have read other people's comments, but I don't play out on guitar. I do an open mic night here and there, but I'm primarily a saxophonist. So, I don't take my guitar out gigging. I do, however, like to take it to parties with friends and sit out and play and sing. It's more than sufficient for that.

The Zager Guitar customer service has been amazing. Even just the speed of their response to my e-mail questions is remarkable. Denny Zager Jr. is in charge their customer service and he really does his job well. I work in customer service, so to get someone who is competent and quick in their response is just mind boggling. How many companies take their customers seriously enough to print out their letters and put them on the president of the company's desk!?! That's the kind of thing you can expect with these guys. I think that's the most impressive thing to me. I am in the process of opening a business and I am really edified to see other small businesses taking business and their customers seriously.

I have been playing for 23 years. I began as a kid. I have had many guitars over the years - including some custom made classical guitars from Mexico. I've owned Gibson, Guild, Martin, Washburn, Fender, and Dean acoustics. I've sold them all over the years - mostly to pay off college loans, car insurance and bills when I was unemployed. This is the only guitar I would bother to buy again if it were damaged or stolen. I am really impressed with the whole package. The sound is rich and professional, the action is easy and smooth, and it looks beautiful. I like that it's lightweight but built well. I wish I had a showroom to go to to try out their other models. I would really like to try the Cedar bodied and Orchestra Model guitars. Eventually, I do plan to purchase another guitar from them.

The ZAD50 is one of Denny Zager's great guitars, built to his specs (I'm not sure where, but I believe in the US). It has 20 frets, mahogany back, neck and sides and a solid spruce top. It is fully acoustic. It has a rosewood bridge and fretboard. The nut and saddle are hand carved, and the frets are hand filed. It is modeled on a Martin, and to my mind, is similar to a D18.....just my opinion. The finish is high gloss and mirror-like. The neck is a little wider than what you would expect. This gives you a little more room for your fingers and helps to give you a cleaner sound. It comes with Grover Tuners and Martin extra light strings. Mine came with extra strings, some Zager picks, an allen wrench to adjust the neck, a guitar stand, a Zager Tee shirt and a polaroid photo of Denny Zager inspecting the guitar. The ZAD50 is a dreadnaught style of guitar.
Sound
:

The sound is vibrant and resonant with wonderful sustain. It's good on the low end and just gets better as you play up the neck. The volume is not all that great on the Low E string, could just be me..., but it's all that you could hope for in the mid-range. I haven't played it hard yet, and I likely won't, but it could hold its own against any other guitar in a good room. Here's an interesting thing - as I carry the ZAD50 down the stairs...I can hear it ringing. I have four guitars, and that's the first time I've ever heard that.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

I'm not a guitar tech, and I'm not an expert; but I've been playing for nearly thirty years. The ZAD50 is fully acoustic, so it has to stand on its own. The action is close, all the way up the neck. If you pull it too hard with your thumb, then you can get a little rattle. My guitar was set up perfectly. I don't know what you could do to improve it. You could look at this instrument for a long time, and you won't find anything wrond with it. If by some chance you do - they will fix it.....no question asked. The wood is lovely and the finish mirror-bright.

This is a nice guitar. I don't play out other than jamming. I think you could play this guitar in a church...unmic'd....and they would hear it in the back pews. It feels solid and dependable when you hold it. It's got a lovely neck. It seems just a little bit smaller than my other dreadnaughts (I haven't checked it, its just a feeling), and it sits nice in your arms and doesn't "try to get away from you". Its a comfy guitar. It doesn't come with a strap button, but you do get to access a bunch of videos, and one of them tells you the best way, and location, to install a strap button. If you really want a strap button, I think Denny'll send you one.

Zager Guitars is the best company you could ever hope to deal with. This is not hyperbole. You can e-mail them anytime, and Dennis will be back to within a half hour or so.....sometimes in minutes. He is unfailingly polite, he never talks down to you, and he is very helpful and absolutely professional. Every time I wrote to him, I felt like I was talking to an old friend. Denny, in his videos, is chatty and likes to talk guitars. I could listen to him all day. This is a good company. Try it - go on line and drop them a note. Watch and see what happens.

I've been playing for nearly thirty years. I also play the fiddle and mandolin. I play the bagpipes and taught music for ten years. I would happily deal with this company again. They have a ZAD80, rosewood back and sides with abalone inlays all over the place that would look very good on me. If I try to sneak in another guitar, well, I'll have to be pretty sneaky about it.
The prices are great. They have sales. You can also buy demos. The guitars are underpriced.....oh, I didn't mean that !
The only thing I would like to see would be shipping to Canada. Zager ships from their company HQ in Nebraska to anywhere in the continental US for about forty bucks, and they do this really well. I live in Canada, so I had it shipped to an uncle in Pennsylvania who then shipped it up to Canada. I paid $40 plus $40 plus $77 in custom fees to bring it across the border.
I would wish that Zager Guitars sold some "stuff", accessories you know. That would be nice.

I enjoy a small neck on a guitar since I have short, fat, stubby Cherokee Indian fingers. Customer Support? I go out of my way and in many cases pay a higher price for a product when the people I talk with / deal with Bubble / play / make you feel welcome. I emailed Denny and informed him of my problems and needs. Dennis Jr. responded by email with what he believed to be my best choice and explained why. When I called to order my new Guitar, Brian answered and immediately made me feel happy that I called and it???s apparent that Brian is a people person. I have either hung up or walked out on a place of business because of the personality of the people handling my business. it was a great and a pleasant buying experience, I was treated like they wanted my business and Brian spent a lot of time working with me on my purchase, i.e. I didn't get the bums rush. I have no doubt should I have a problem Denny and his personnel will handle it.

I play by ear and can not read note one so tone and tune is important to me. a guitar that is out of tune as you go up and down the neck is like finger nails on a chalk board to me. I do enjoy this guitar. I own three other guitars, two of them are now for sell.I find it refreshing when a product performs as advertized.

ZAD-50 experience
I stumbled on Zager's web site, and decided on the ZAD 50 after considering the options, I really hadn't done any comparison shopping at this point. I figured for $450 and a 100% satisfaction guarantee there's nothing to lose.
The guitar came quickly and it's appearance was excellent in spite of everyone's complaints about being made in Indonesia which is true. The quality of the finish and appointments were good for the money. Solid top with mahogany laminate back and sides, and white neck binding
The guitar had a slightly wider than normal neck, X-light Martin DARCO strings. It came with a guitar stand, extra set of strings, picks, and WOW...a Polaroid picture of Denny Zager working on a guitar, oh yeah a T-shirt too!
The guitar was very easy to play and easy on the fingers, but if you've been playing an acoustic for a while you'll find that the "String Science" really isn't necessary if your guitar has a decent setup and action.
The guitar sounds fairly good to the untrained ear, but if you like to pound out the chords for a BIG sound, forget it. The setup and the guitar just isn't built for that type of play. If you are a very light handed player this guitar may work for you.
After playing the guitar for a couple of days, I went to Guitar Center to try out the Martins. OH MY GOD!!! They blew the Zager away with beautiful sound and sustain, however I still maintain that the Zager looked very good at $450. Martins of course are priced into the thousands of dollars but I found a Martin model made for Guitar Center and Musicians Friend.
Its called a Martin "Custom D", very spartan looking, no bells and whistles but INCREDIBLE sound. Spruce Top, SOLID Rosewood back & sides, and rosewood fretboard. All for $899 with Martin case at Musician's Friend
Sure the Martin is priced higher but the sound is no comparison and isn't that what really matters?!
I emailed Zager for a return, they issued a return UPS label at no cost to me, I returned the guitar and was given full credit no questions asked, a real class act on Zager's part. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT REMOVE THE PICK GUARD PLASTIC, ZAGER OR WILL NOT HONOR THE GUARANTEE. There is no mention of this in his warranty statement
If cost is of utmost importance to you, the Zager is a good buy, but for a modest amount more you can own a REAL Martin at an entry level price. I tried the D18, D-28, and D-45, the Custom D sounds very close to the high end Martins. To me the high end wasn't worth the extra $1-$2 thousand dollars more.
Be sure to demo other guitars before jumping blindly as I did initially

Testiominal:
To all you guitar heroes:
I purchased a discounted ZAD50 better than 2 weeks ago, now my review thus far.
My reason for buying a discounted guitar from zager,(knowing custom anything varies)was not so much for the savings, but to see if the box was played in a bit, this wound up to be true. To this day I really can't find the flaws. So no biggie! The black guitar just about jumped out of the box,Gorgeous ++. Very nice case Well built with lock.
After letting the guitar stand to acclimate to the house temperature for aprox two hrs (which was torture),I picked it up out of the case, and strummed my first chord, what a nice full sound in fact sweet! Even with the extra light strings,(which I was a bit skeptical) the guitar had great push, and put a whole new meaning to fast into my playing. More than 2 weeks of playing this guitar, Denny's claims are true, my fingers don't hurt so I play longer, the action is so sweet I play much cleaner, more precise, which always helps with timing. Two days ago I realized the B string was buzzing a bit, but I'm no fool the weather is so cold here now, the guitar is still settling in to the forced air heat that we have, which in turn must have relieved the neck a touch, one small adjustment to the truss rod and it???s working out nicely. Denny's videos were helpful in this. Great tool and Thanks Denny!, weather can play such a big part with your instrument, I'm the proud owner of a 5??? 7??? grand piano and it took a couple of years to settle into the house.
The proof is in the pudding! My 15 yr old, who is an electric guitar nut, comes creeping over and says Ok Dad hand over that Zager! He immediately began to play "OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY" I was in the other room it was incredible! Go ahead and ask why!! Let alone the song written by Jimmy Page, But if he was playing the Alvarez,or the solid spruce Yamaha, he would not have been anywhere near the clarity of playing that tune. With the additional width of the strings, makes pulloffs-so much easier for us both, finger picking is a dream. I could never play the intro to "TEARS IN HEAVEN" cleanly, but now I can! Thank you Zager!People realize, the playability of this guitar&sound,in my opinion match that of martin's D-15 easily! Now go look at the price of that Martin! I double Dog dare you!
For you beginners, consider the fact that as a beginner you may feel the need to start with that $250 Yamaha or less. Well chances are you not going to have success, the string height and usually HEAVY strings will beat your fingers to a pulp, which will only discourage you from learning, because of how you never dreamed, how hard it can be to hold the strings down. Well with the Zager,I guarantee you will have much more success, and you will learn at a much more accelerated rate, because of Zager's playability, which in turn, will help you realize your dream of being a guitarist, then a true musician. Nothing like being ONE with your guitar while playing your favorite tunes!

I have been playing for 30 years, and the Zager is now my favorite guitar. I would definately replace it if lost or stolen.
It is an excellent guitar for the price. If you want a cosmetically perfect guitar, I suggest to look at other brands. But if you have a limited guitar budget - like me - the ZAD 50 is an excellent guitar.

Beautiful sounding guitar - better than my Washburn and Seagull cedar top. This is a great step up from my first, second and third 'beginner' guitars --> and it's a huge step up for the money. Listen to the demonstrations on www.zagerguitar.com and you'll see and hear for yourself how nice these guitars sound.

Denny sets these up to have a nice low action, hand filed frets and custom nut to spread out the strings a bit. I have short stubby fingers and this guitar is so much easier to play than my other guitars. Easily the best playing acoustic I've played, including Martin D-15 (which runs about 2x cost of this guitar).
I bought this one as a discounted second from Denny's site, and other than a very minor spot by the pickgard (the glue on tip of pickgard came loose, easily fixable), the guitar is beautiful. First thing my kids said when I unpacked this guitar: "Wow Dad, that's GORGEOUS".

This guitar is everything that the manufacturer says it is. After owning a well used starter guitar, I decided I wanted to upgrade to something nice. I visited several guitar forums trying to make a decision on which is best and for what reasons. To my dismay, so many choices and different price ranges. I happened to catch a comment about how anyone intersted in alot of guitar for a very reasonalble price, should take a look at what Zager has to offer. I visited their website and in short order decided to try one of their instruments. Zager offers discounted guitars at reduced prices; units used in shooting videos, or giving lessons, with minor marks or flaws. I purchased a discount guitar and I am hard pressed to find anything wrong with it cosmetically. Bear in mind I am no expert by any means so someone who is, might find a small defect. Again, I could not. I also purchased a used hard shell case and same scenario, cannot find a single flaw in it. Everything was exactly as advertised and the instrument plays like a dream.

I have been playing for about 25 years. Strictly a hobbiest, for my own enjoyment. I would definately purchase another Zager if I were to lose this one for any reason. I love the neck action on it. And if you put a capo on it, its unbelievably easy to make your chords. I looked at Martin, Taylor, ect. Its hard to beat the quality of this instrument for the money. I wish it came with a top strap button installed. They currently do not offer this service. I have no regrets about making this purchase. I find myself playing more now because this guitar plays so easily.

This guitar is a dreadnought with mahogany body, spruce top, and rosewood fretboard. It comes with chrome Grover tuners, a very nice abalone inlay around the soundhole, and white binding on both body and fretboard. The craftsmanship on this guitar is excellent. It is as well made as any acoustic guitar can be.

This guitar has a great tone that should improve even further with each year as the wood ages. I play country/rock/blues/folk with a lot of bass lines, and I like an acoustic with a rich bass as well as a ringing treble that really fills a room. The guitar comes with extra light strings and is set up for fast action and a minimum of hand fatigue. String bends are easy, and I can play for a long time without tiring my left hand. The tradeoff is a little less punch than my other guitar which has slightly heavier strings.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

Each Zager guitar is hand set-up before shipping because this is a small, family owned company according to their website. You can see that the frets have been hand filed and the nut and saddle are set for the lowest action possible without buzzing. If you play it hard it will buzz, so the player has to adjust to the lighter strings and low action accordingly. After an hour or so, I had completely adapted to the feel of it. The instrument had no cosmetic flaws that I could detect. I am not sure what type of plastic is used in the nut and saddle. Both are well fitted and do a good job. I think I would replace the saddle with one made of bone after this one begins to show some wear.
Reliability/Durability
:

This guitar is as sturdy as any expensive guitar that I have played. It is somewhat lighter than my other dreadnought. The workmanship is virtually flawless. The Grover tuners are my personal favorite, and I have used them for years on my guitars. The guitar comes with only the rear strap button, and it is a plastic one that I would replace with one that is more secure. I would have no problem using this guitar on a gig without a backup.

These guitars have a lifetime warranty that covers any failure of the instrument that was not caused by abuse. If the quick and friendly service I got when purchasing the guitar is any indication, I believe that this small company will make it right if the the guitar needs repair or replacement in the future. They also offer free video instructions on how to care for the instrument, install strings, and a variety of other topics.

I have been playing since 1964, and own two other acoustics and a vintage electric, as well as several amps, mics, and other gear. I did not ask where the guitar was actually assembled. I know it was overseas because a guitar of this quality made in the USA unfortunately would cost a small fortune. I had planned on buying one of the 3 US made guitars, but when I saw this website I took a chance on this one, and I feel that I have a guitar that is as good or better than most of the top US guitars and the cost was quite reasonable. I have played all of them in music stores. If it was stolen I would order another one just like it.

Seen from a distance, this guitar appears to be your standard dreadnought in a light finish with a tortoise shell pick guard. Up close, several details reveal this isn't a production line instrument. The gloss finish over solid spruce top and mahogany back and sides is flawless as delivered. The mahogany neck is overlaid with a nice rosewood fretboard and is custom sculpted to give a thin and extremely comfortable profile. There are 20 frets with 14 open. Sealed, chrome Grover tuners look nice on the headstock which, other than the ZAGER name, is unadorned. Abalone inlay around the sound hole is simple, but not at all plain. All models are available as accoustic electric for those who prefer them.

New and "right out of the box", the ZAD 50 sounded impressive, with great tonal range and sustain (10 sec+). It comes with Martin extra light strings (extra set included) that sound good anywhere on the neck. The sound is full, clean, and balanced, with no excessively this or that. It seems it will fit well with the folk/pop/blues/bluegrass music I favor.

Action and playability are where this guitar shines. Made to Martin specs, the guitar is personally hand-modified in several important ways by the owner of the company, Denny Zager (Zager & Evans..."In the Year 2525"). It's called an EZ PLAY because Zager reconfigures the neck to a thinner profile, hand-filing frets for comfort and buzz-free sound. He also custom sculpts the nut and bridge to lower the action which, though not effortless, is dramatically different (easier) than the vast majority of off-the-shelf instruments, shop-set or not. String spacing is slightly wider than standard and doubtless will improve my finger-picking (and I think this accounts for the fact that, in a face-on view, the fret markers...dots...aren't perfectly centered between the 3rd and 4th strings; but, who cares?). Barre chords are a breeze, even way up on the neck. The light spruce top and light mahogany body have a flawless finish and the joinery, inside and out, is beautifully done. Who'd have thought the inside of a guitar would be as pretty as the outside? Looking around with a flaslight, I saw an immaculate interior and attractive labeling, as well as the extensive hand-shaping of braces (again, by Zager) which must account, in part, for the great sound. I've had this guitar only a short time, but every encounter only impresses more. Denny Zager personally plays and sets up this guitar before delivery, and he signs the back, which I think is a nice touch. If you don't, I understand the signature can be removed, but don't know how.

Although quite light for a dreadnought, the guitar seems rock-solid, and has balance that makes holding it easy. The only hardware are the Grover tuners, and we all know about them. Treated properly, I can't imagine this guitar not lasting many years. I'm 63 and fully expect this to be the last guitar I'll need to buy.

ZAGER gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee and a LIFETIME warrantee. They will even pay for return shipment via UPS. This is a small, family owned business (in Nebraska) and obviously can't make an offer like this without something to back it up. Their service has, so far, been exemplary. Call the factory and you'll perhaps be answered by one of the owners. Email is answered quickly and questions dealt with more than adequately. I emailed a question in the wee hours this morning and had an answer by 9 AM; personal AND friendly. Their web site is easy to navigate and comprehensive. Offered as part of "the deal", is access to a large catalogue of on-line instruction by Denny Zager. Nice videos, but way better with a broadband internet connection, which I don't have...the only fault I've noticed, and it's not with Zager.

I've just retired and decided to "re-learn" guitar after a long hiatus. I currently have a Johnson resonator and a generic, discount-store dread. My previous experience had been pretty much recreational, with occassional gigs solo or with a small group. Had I been lucky enough, then, to play the Zager I now have, I'd have saved endless hours of pain and frustration, and I see Zagers as a real boon to beginning guitarists who want to go the accoustic route. I've never played a $5000 guitar, but I shopped extensively, on-line and in the flesh, before stumbling upon ZAGER via a Google search and buying mine sight unseen. The web site is detailed enough to answer most questions (also a large number of nice photos of each model) and customer service handles the rest nicely. So, comparing apples to apples, I didn't find anything among the "famous" names I encountered that would stand up to my ZAGER at 2, 3 or more times the price. If it disappeared, I'd drive to Nebraska and grab another ASAP! In fact, I wish I could afford to give a few of these as gifts. What do I love about my ZAD 50? Reviews are so subjective, by definition, but the proof is in the playing. I see I've given the whole ZAGER experience a solid 10 rating. The instrument and the folks behind it, in my mind, deserve it! Oh, yes; they sent me a a cool t-shirt, to boot!

This guitar is made to be played and played and played. Virtually no hand or finger fatigue. I thought because my Multiple Sclerosis was causing me to loose the srength in my fingers and my hand was cramping so bad I had to give up my acoustics. I didn't own any cheap guitars either .I had a Martin D-16GT and a Taylor 310-CE. This is the first acoustic I've been able to play in 2 years and no fatigue, cramping or pain. This guitar is the hardest to put down of any Acoustic I've ever owned. I have a Fender ash stratocaster that I had a luthier put a Fishman Power bridge in and I have a Parker (03) Nightfly M because that was the only way I thought I'd ever be able to play Acoustic again.Thank you Mr Zager..you make the easiest to play acoustic on EARTH!! and it SOUNDS as good as it looks. The guitar had a decent sound, not too bright like some lower end guitars, but not a Martin or a Taylor either. It did project well. Anybody that says this is the best sound ever has either never played really good guitars, or got one much better than the one I got.

I bought a ZAD 50 that was a discount guitar, it was described as "virtually perfect, played by Denny in several videos". The finish was pretty decent, there were a couple of black specks under the finish on the front near the soundhole, and a very small bubble also on the front. I didn't expect perfection since I was buying one of their discount models. My big disappointment in the guitar was the action. It was 4.5mm off the fret at the 12th fret, which is higher than any other guitar I own. The frets sure were hand filed, they had great big flat spots on many of them that were not polished or crowned in any way. The low E string was way up there height wise, and the high E string was buzzing from the 4th to the 7th fret. Not at all what I expected, I was expecting a GREAT action since that's their main selling point. The action was in my opinion not even good, much less great. The extra light guage strings made it easier to play of course. The top wasn't even close to bookmatched, the top and bottom halves were even a very different color. Also, the white binding was discolored a great deal, it was white and faded yellow.

I don't gig, so that's a moot point. The guitar's quality of construction didn't seem any better than the $100 Samick that I bought for my daughter, but it didn't seem any worse either. No obvious problems with it that I found in my short time with the guitar.

Customer support when buying the guitar was great. All my emails were answered within a couple of hours, most within 20 minutes or so. When I emailed after recieving the guitar to tell them I wasn't pleased with it, things slowed down some, but then again all my emails were answered within 24 hours so that's still pretty good. Dennis Jr. tried to get me to keep the guitar telling me that they were set up high on purpose, and that the guitar would "play in" and the action would get better. The way I understand it, string tension only works one way, unless physics have suddenly reversed themselves. He also said that a truss rod adjustment would take care of the buzzing hight E, I responded that if I adjusted it looser it would only make the rest of the action worse. The next email said they'd take it back and they sent me a pre-paid UPS label to ship it with. Then they told me that in order to have the refund issued that the guitar must be perfect and the pick guard plastic must still be in place. Glad I didn't peel it off. They also said that no refund would be issued until it was inspected by Denny himself, which I guess is reasonable. I shipped the guitar on 7/30, they recieved it on 8/2, and on 8/7 I emailed asking about my refund. Dennis Jr. took care of it in a couple of hours after that, so the 100% refund is truly on the up and up, as long as you live up to the part of the bargain that they didn't tell you up front, which is leave the pick guard plastic on.

This guitar is a very well made with a spruce top , mahogany sides and back and a rosewood fretboard. It has a glossy finish, which will protect it from those annoying nicks and scratches. The strings are set low and a little wider apart than most dreadnoughts , which makes learning a lot easier. It has sealed Grover tuners, which are a big plus for keeping it in tune.I believe it was made in Indonesia, but that is where some Martins are made, so don't hold that against it.

All I can say about this is , dealing with the Zager company is a pleasure. Every question and concern was answered promptly , by email or phone, with the friendliest people. No questions seemed to silly for them to answer , and I think I did ask some ridiculous questions. Also a website that is full of useful information about your guitar.

Well, I've owned guitars for over thirty years, like I said this is a hobby. My favorite guitar was an Ibanez PF 5 , but I can only play it for a short time because it was tough on the ole fingers , and it has a narrow neck, which made some chords impossibe for me to play. Now I have more time to spend playing so I searched for months for something new , and I chose the ZAD 50.And I'm happy I did. It plays with the slightest of touch, and hitting notes and chords is so much easier for me. I know one thing for sure , I am practicing a lot more, I enjoy playing more , and my fingers don't hurt as much any more. They still hurt , but not anywhere like they did.
The best I can say to you is, if your planning a career playing the guitar, maybe this isn't the guitar for you. If your looking to impress your friends with a big name guitar, maybe this isn't the guitar for you. BUT , if your looking for a good guitar to learn on, that has a fantastic sound ( in my opinion ), at a very reasonable price, then this may be the guitar for you. I love mine and am proud to bring it out of its case. Nuff said.

A beautiful glossy finish on this dreadnought lets the solid Sprucewood top fully show. The sides and back are Mahogany. The fit and finish is super with no visible flaws all around. It is obvious that there is great care and attention to quality built into this guitar even before hearing a single sound. A trim of abalone around the sound hole really sets off the finish too.
Both the bridge and the fret-board are Rosewood, a real deal on a guitar in this price range and a feature that adds to the great body sound.
The tuners are sealed Grovers. Helps to make the fine adjustments to get each string just right to bring out the clean sound.
Some customizations are built-in to the standard guitar really push this model way beyond standard. These include filing the frets down to make super easy and smooth playing, hand-carving the saddle and nut to bring the strings lower and to widen them just a bit - this small adjustment gets my fingers dead-on the correct strings with no problems. And there is some scalloped bracing (rather than the usual flat) that really opens up the sound moving across and through the top.
All-in-all, one of the best-built guitars I have come across for less than $2,000.

I was surprised (and very pleased) that this ZAD-50 rivals both my Yamaha CJ838S (circa 1980)and what I remember of my Martin D-35 that was ripped off from my apartment a long time ago (I always suspected a deal made on the street by my room mate, but that is another story). I have not had the budget to ever replace the D-35 and have really missed that sound - until now. Again, amazed at the sound quality from this guitar. In a blindfold test, I doubt that many could pick it from my D-35 if played side-by-side. That is saying something. With the fret and saddle mods, I was worried that the strings would either not carry or would buzz-out. Neither has happened. So I got a great playing guitar that my daughter is learing on that is much easier to play than any of my other guitars.

This thing played and was almost perfectly in tune right out of the shipping box. A nice set of Martin strings was neatly strung and trimmed out. There were no flaws visible in the mechanics at all.

Cannot say. I believe it would. I traveled and played hard with my Martin and it was scuffed, but never tired. I belive this model would hold its own in just about any situation. I have never miked this one, but bet it would hold the house as long as you wanted to and I would not need anything else. If I were on the live circuit, I would probably get the acoustic/electric version that has a pickup built-in because it looks like a breeze to get a room-full of sound from. Still, I think this one would do it too if miked properly - with the customizations, I would not want to modify this myself.

No repairs. Have only had for one month. They offer a 100% guarantee and a lifetime warranty, so that seems good enough for me.
I did exchange a few emails with the company and these were answered promptly. And Denny Zager (founder/owner) and his son Dennis Jr. really stand behind their products. Their web site is full of useful tips. for example, I have been playing and stringing my acoustics for over 30 years, and I was showing my daughter one of Denny's short tip videos and I picked up one little tip that I plan to use next time I put strings on. It just makes sense. My daughter says she enjoys watching him play (maybe only because he is a lot better than me... but also because he does a good job teaching about the guitar, how it works, how to tune and care for it, etc.
Also, through something I did (bad wireless connection on my end I think), I ended up double-ordering and they promptly fixed this the next business day with no major discussion needed. That was refreshing. Usually, once a company has your money, good luch.

Been playing for 40+ years - I think I started out on a Sears Silvertone handed down from my brother in maybe about 1966...try doing the Wipe Out by the Beach Boys on an acoustic... Have an old Ventura Bruno V-23S, Circa 1970 (think Gibson Dove knockoff), a Yamaha CJ838S. Had my Martin D-35 (sigh) and had, played, borrowed and sold several others usually bought used in the $500 range(Epiphone, Gibson, Alvarez)over the years.
Worth noting this is the only guitar I have ever bought that I did not play or hear played first. But after reading several reliable reviews and looking at the construction of this one, plus the money-back guarantee, it seemed worth the go. And it has worked out great.
I really like the rich sound. I heard my daughter plunking away a couple of days ago and I was both upstairs and two rooms away distance wise. The sound from this thing was amazinging clear and especially when you consider that she has been playing for only one month. Just think back to what you sounded like in the beginning. Ouch.
And the next best thing is that she really can play it with ease. That is no idle boast from Denny Zager - this model has EZ-Play in the name and it really is.
I would probably go for the acoustic/electric Zager model if I bought again just for the convenience of a built in tuner, pickup, etc.

Well I am 42 years old, been singing(for money)for awhile and only been playing guitar for a year. I have alot of support and friends who play and help me out, already sounding good(according to others opinions, and mine) I own 4 guitars of varying value, however the Zager is already in the top 2. I would buy another Zager and will probably own another by early next year. I don't think I've fallen in Love with the guitar, however I like it alot...Nothing I really disliked. I may be like some folks and expect to much from a new instrument like this one..............My wife told me something very interesting about the guitar last night, and I quote,"the guitar doesn't make the man, the man makes the guitar". I believe she said that because I was probably expecting to much from my new Zager, although its a great guitar, it won't play the music for you or "Leap tall buildings in a single bound". Its just a great tool to allow me to do that myself...................

I have had a guitar for 30 years but only really started playing to really try to learn for a little more than a year, ever since I got this guitar. My favorite features are the sound/tone and the string science modifications that spread the strings slightly and lower for easier fingering. I would but another one but probably an electric/acoustic next time. I definitely would buy another Zager especially after trying others in the same general price range.

My style is flat pick strumming with about 25% fingerpicking. I have been performing since 1967. My duo plays folk rock, blues, covers and originals. The ZAD50 is plugged directly into a Peavy 400 mixer/amp and the tone controls are flat.
The sound is full and has more of an accoustic sound than Piezo than my prevoius Takamini 360 or Ibanez AEF 30. WHere some times, pickups emphasize some strings over others, the Fishman seems more equalized. Finger picking is somewhat easier because the strings are wider apart than my previous guitars. Some notes buzz on some frets but I haven't played a guitar that hasn't had this problem.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

My prevoius Takamini had numerous setups with extensive fret work and the action was great. The Zager plays as easy as I could want and it's never had a setup. Our gigs are typically 3 and four hours and of course my fingers are somewhat sore but unless I play my Line 6 Variax 300 I found all acoustics are like this.
Reliability/Durability
:

I use the Zager live on the average of 3 times a month. Only recently I added the Variac 300 and this was for a puncher lead sound. One things that I noticed on the Zager is it stays in tune all night. The finish is as good as when the guitar was new. I really would not own a guitar that I couldn't depend on. I used to break G, D and A strings often on my Takamini but this hasn't happened on the Zager.

Again, I've been performing for 40 years. I've owned 2 Martin D-18s, a Guild D-35, F-30, F-50 and two other Guilds that I don't remember the models of. A Takamini 360SC that I loved, and an Ibanez AEF 30 that was ok but didn't feel right.
I purchassed the Zager ZAD50 used. I had never heard of the brand but after playing it acoustic and plugged in for about an hour I fell in love with the feel, the weight and the sound. I compared it to two $750.00 Martins and the ZAD50 had a much more natural sound. My only hesitation was the Zager name on the headstock. What would my guitar playing friends think. The sound and playability helped me overcome that. If this review seems overly positive it's because I truely love picking it up and playing it.

This is a full size acoustic guitar from Zager, made in the USA. The finish is extremely nice, very simple, but well done mother-of-pearl inlay on the body, easy to play design. Frets are spaced well on the neck for the average size hand/fingers, and the guitar holds tune very nicely. When Zager says this guitar is set-up for easy play, they are right on---
Very well crafted instrument overall. Accessories included an extra set of strings, digital humidity/temp gauge, and Allyn wrench for neck adjustment if necessary over time. No upper strap button, had to have one installed. Comes in nice case, with option for other cases when ordered.

Let me preface by saying I've been playing over 30 years although not professionally.
I recently purchased a Zad 80 and case from Zager guitars. The guitar arrived in five days after placing the order, Prior to ordering the guitar I had many conversations with Denny Jr. by e-mail. My e-mails were always answered within a few minutes. Denny's patience was inexhaustible. I'm not one to buy products online and rarely have. I happened upon Zager guitars accidentally when I was just goofing around on the Internet and looking at eBay. After visiting their sight I became intrigued. Their claims about their guitars seemed too good to be true, and I am first and foremost a skeptic. After many exchanges with Denny, and after reading their testimonials and scouring their money back guarantee for small print I decided I would give them try. When I received the guitar and opened it and I was shocked at how good it looked. At the same time I was also suspicious. I took the guitar out and stummed it a couple of times. It was only slightly out of tune. After tuning it up I could not believe the volume and beautiful tone that came from this guitar. But i thought, surely something must be wrong with it. I inspected it from head to toe and could find nothing wrong except a very very small blemish on the back of the guitar near the lower bout. Probably something that you would expect to see on almost any new product. I played around with it for a couple of days trying to find something wrong with it. I couldn't. Still unsatisfied Itook it to a local guitar Luthier (some one who builds and repairs guitars). I told him I had the opportunity of purchasing this guitar, and an equal opportunity of returning it. I asked him to check it over, check the intonation, etc.. Then I asked him what he thought the value of this guitar might be. He told me that a fair price for the guitar would be anywhere from $1800 to $2300! Again I was shocked! I asked him then if I were to pay $600 for this guitar would it be a good price? He exclaimed, definitely, no question! Well to be honest, I ended up returning this guitar because I decided it was still just too much money for me to pay. I called Denny and told him I wanted to return the guitar. There were no questions asked. I received a return label by e-mail and returned the guitar and received a refund. No problems.
I then ordered a Zad 50. Again I received the guitar in five days. When I opened the guitar I was equally shocked by its good looks, especially considering that it cost $200 less than the Zad 80. I took the guitar out of the case, tuned it up, and began to play. I was stunned. Absolutely stunned! Although the tone was slightly different from the Zad 80, the volume and brilliance of tone was amazing. This is one of the two best guitars I have ever owned or played (the other being a sad 80!). The intonation of this guitar is perfect. I mean technically perfect. I've had it tested. It is perfect! I don't see myself ever parting with this guitar. I have been playing for over 30 years so this is no small feat, and I don't expect any of you fellow skeptics out there to believe me anymore then I believed the other testimonials. But all I can say is believe. Whether you do or not is your choice. But believe me I would not have taken time that it took to right this review unless it was true. This review for Zager guitar is the only review I have ever written for any product. Enough said.

this is a satin finish dreadnought guitar with grover tuners. It has a relatively thin neck and is very easy to play. I bought the hard case and keep the guitar cased when not in use. I believe the guitar was made in 2005 the year I bought it. It is a solid top guitar.

The sound quality is fantastic, this is an acoustic guitar with no pick up. I had a gibson hummingbird that I bought new in 1970 this Zager is much easier to play it doesn't sound quite as good as the hummingbird but for the price I paid it is absolutely excellent. The action is very nice, after I had this guitar for several months it has become my only guitar and I have sold the gibson. Many of your readers are probably shaking their heads saying what did this guy do? But I can guarantee you this is one fine guitar with a great sound and is definitely easier to play than the gibson. At one point with the hummingbird I sent it back to gibson to have the neck reworked. Even after that was done the bird was harder to play than this Zager. I would highly recommend the Zager and I would buy another.

I don't play professionally, I play for family and friends and the guitar feels like a keeper. It was hard for me to part with my hummingbird, it was so beautiful and felt like you could drop it from a 10 story building and do no damage! The Zager doesn't feel that stout but it does feel good, real good in fact. And I know that whenever I open that case the Zager will perform beautifully. It has actually made me a better player. I have been playing for (I hate to think about it) 40 years.

I haven't had to get it repaired but when I first got it I wasn't sure I liked it and called the factory. I actually got Denny Zager Jr. and he said no hard feelings just send it back..... well I thought about it a while and played it a lot for a few days... I had been looking at many guitars and wanted something new and the Zager seemed like the best of what I had been looking at. Well those few days of playing changed everything for me, I love the Zager and have sold the hummingbird.

I looked at lower end Martins and gibsons in the $700.00 range. I looked around at many others including Takimini in the $400 to $600 range. But then I found Zager and started reading about how Denny Zager built his guitars and so I tried one and if this guitar was damaged, stolen or lost I would definitely buy another Zager and I would probably buy an even more expensive one. This Zager was in the $400 to $500 price range and it sound and plays like a $2,000. guitar.

Absolutely gorgeous guitar, very classy! Gloss finish really makes this baby glow. The neck is thinner than most, which makes fast playing a breeze. Spruce soundboard and mahogany back and sides looked great and sounded even better. Nut and bridge sit low for easy playability. Abalone soundhole inlays and pearl dot fret markers let you know you're getting a quality instrument. Grover enclosed tuning heads were an added bonus. All at a great price: <$400!

Great for strumming, finger-picking, and even speedy soloing. Clear, rich sound with bright highs rivals even the most expensive Martins. Sustain seems to ring out forever. Sounded great whether strumming lightly or banging away.

Zager's EZ-Play system is brilliant. The action is so low, you'd expect a buzz just by looking at it, but it is completely buzz-free and plays like a dream. No more cramped and tires hands! The modified bracing really lets the soundboard resonate, and small frets are easy on the fingers.
Reliability/Durability
:

Feels solid, with adequate bracing and a thick glossy coat that can take a few hits without dinging. High quality woods and hardware mean this guitar was meant to last a lifetime. Lower action means less wear on the strings, so they should last longer than normal.

Lifetime warranty and 100% money-back satisfaction guarantee!! You can't beat that anywhere. When my friend's pickguard began to come up at the edge, Zager shipped him a new pickguard and a brand new set of Martin strings for free! These people really care about the people who buy their products and Denny Zager signs each guitar to show his personal approval.

I am hoping that I can do this without getting too technical. This will be a "general" rating of this guitar. This the second guitar that I have purchased from Dennis Zager. The first was several years ago - a modified Washburn elec acoustic. The guitar I recently purchased is the Zager Version of the elec. acoustic. These guitars are made to Dennis's specs buy the factory that makes the Martin Sigma series. Truely I have not played an acoustic guitar that plays as sweetly as this one. I am a semi pro that plays out 3 or 4 times a month and I used to have to space out my giggs to let my fingers recover usually 3 or 4 days apart. I just played a gigg with my new Zager ZAD 50 (on Saturday) and I could play the next day if I had to. A 4 hour gigg was no problem - usually I am pretty sore after 3 hours or so. Not that I couldn't finish the gigg but had some sore fingers. On Saturday I felt just a little fatigue in the fingers but by then the gigg was over. For the money - this guitar is a home run.

It sounds great, it looks great, the action is low and easy to play, with no buzzing. I had compared it to a Washburn D10S which I also liked but was not as easy to play, also and Alvarez I forget the model but it also was a nice guitar. I also tried a couple of Epiphones. I thought, hey money back guarantee plus pay shipping both ways, give it a try, I'M GLAD I DID The ZAD 50 sounds great, looks great, easy to play, lifetime warranty, money back guarantee, even if you do return it the shipping is paided for both ways.
Oh yeah playing bar cords was difficult if not very hard for me, not with the Zager Zad 50.

The guitar I got has a high gloss black finish. It is a full sized dreadnaught (41") with the usual sting-thru-body design. He uses Grover tuners which are quality tuners. I tuned the guitar a couple times after receiving it (with an electronic tuner) and since the strings have now stretched out they have stayed in near perfect tune. The only reason they aren't in perfect tune all the time is that I live in a climate that is dry on day and humid the next which always play havoc with strings. But even with that they really do stay close to pitch. The top is solid spruce which accounts for the depth of the lows right thru to the clarity of the highs. The back and sides are listed as mahogany. It doesn't state that they are laminate but from the sound I'm actually not sure (though for the price they might be). It has a rosewood fretboard and bridge which really look good against the black body. And unlike most other guitars in this range, they really are rosewood (many guitars in this range use maple or a cheap wood and actually paint the top the color of rosewood). Last, but not least, Denny Zager must be sure of what he sells as all his guitars have a life time warranty. You don't do that unless you are sure of your product.
After all this you are probably wondering if I am a family member or work for or with Zager Guitar in some capacity. I would think so if I were reading this (the sceptic in me). I have never written a review that doesn't put down at least SOMETHING on the product I am reviewing. But the fact is I stumbled across Zager Guitar on eBay (as I said) and it went from there. They just make a good product and are a good company to deal with; simple as that.

I have been primarily a concert level classical guitarist and taught classical and steele string guitar for just over 30 years. When teaching steele string the style is primarily folk and pop (taught "finger picking style". I became chronically ill and had to sell off the last of my guitar collection a year ago. The medications that I take have induced osteo arthristis, firbromyalgia and a condition called Raymaud's Syndrome...all make the hands cramp or hurt (more than just a little pain and there is little that can be taken for the problems since they are medication induced themselves).
I first say the "Zager Easy Play" guitars while just looking around eBsy then went to their site. Having played for so long it was like having a child taken from you when I had to stop because even nylon strings were difficult to finger. I saw the promises made by Denny Zager and family on his site about the pplayability of his guitars and several friends got the money together to purchase a black, ZAD 50 for me. What was there to lose? They even offer to pay for s&h if not satisfied to send it back so I received one.
I have played everything from student guitars that sound like PlaySchool toys to my own collection of guitars over the years which have included a Les Paul L5 semi-acoustic (my first guitar and the one I considered my baby) to concert classicals costing as much as $4000. While the sound of a ZAD 50 cannot compare to a $4000 concert guitar I am amazed at the fulness and depth of the lows and how clean and bright the highs are. I'm sorry another reviewer had such a bad experience with his guitar but mine worked exactly as advertised. The action (to be discussed next), bridge, saddle, nut and frets were all finely tuned to each other and all the ranges of the instrument are clear and loud for an acoustic guitar. I was amazed to be able to produce harmonics at not only the 12th fret (as is normal for a student or even intermediate level guitar) but also at the 7th and 5th frets. Running scales up and down the fretboard didn't produce a single buzz (even with my messed up hands).
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
The action is amazing for a steele string on the guitar I received. On the site there is a video of Denny Zager stating that at the first fret you would have trouble sliding a piece of paper underneath at that point since the action is so low...so the first thing I did was get and piece of paper and...you can guess the rest. I was difficult to get under but the action was high enough and the guitar setup was so well done that there is no fret buzz at all anywhere on the fretboard.
Having had guitars set up by luthiers in the past, to do as much work as it would have taken to custom make the nut, bridge and file any necessary frets would have cost $300 easily. If a guitar shop says they can do it for $50 to $75 they are amatuers (I had students waste the money in many instances and their guitars really came out with little more than a new set of strings and possibly a new nut that was factory made but to a different height). This is truly the work of a master luthier.
Since the guitar is stained black it is hard to tell if the wood has been bookmatched or not. While the guitar is simple in esthetic design, it is afterall a $400 instrument that has really had another $300 (at least) worth of work done on it by a master luthier. So if it isn't overly fancy, it is still good looking and the black finish is flawless.
Having owned as many guitars as I have and having seen student guitars for 20 years I gave the guitar more than one "once over". I looked for glue at joints, dings that had been stained over (something common with black or sunburst finish guitars as it will sometimes hide imperfections). I looked at the neck from every angle. Again, I don't know what happened with the other reviewer's guitar but mine was flawless in every respect.
The base guitars used by Denny Zager are made by Martin for him and them shipped to him for customization. I actually wanted to find something wrong (it makes for much more interesting reviews I'm sure) but the fact is that there was just nothing to find.
Reliability/Durability
:
10
I've only had the guitar for a few weeks. Being homebound now though it is getting a LOT of use (probably about 5 to 6 hours a day...not bad when I couldn't even play a nylon string guitar for more than 1/2 hour before my hands would cramp up or just become too painful). So I would have to say that it will probably be pretty durable. As for reliability; every part is firmly attached and none of the parts are cheap. The tuners appear to be sealed chrome (unlike guitars such as the Esteban line which used tuners enclosed in plastic painted to look chrome).
As to whether I would use it on a gig; if I had a good mic set up (since this model is acoustic) I actually would. While I might not play it with a symphony orchestra I wouldn't think twice about using it as my primary guitar on a solo gig. As I said, the sound if full in all ranges, it would just need to use a mic and amp for a large crowd. I really would compare the sound of this guitar to one costing about $1000.
Customer Support

As for customer supposrt all I can say is that it is stuck somewhere back in the 60s. Before you take that as a negative, read on.
Back in the 60s there were a couple slogans that ran around: "the customer is always right" and "if you really feel you did a good job you shouldn't be afraid to sign your work". Denny Zager does just that; every guitar he modifies, he signs.
I have also dealth extensively through e-mail with his son Dennis, Jr. Every e-mail has been answered within 24 hours (even on weekends). The are always professional, curteous and actually answer my questions - no trying to skirt around issues. This company, at least in my case, has gone out of their way to be helpful (believe it or not, prior to a sale I am a "hard sell" so I ask a lot of questions and having been in the business my self for so long I sometimes ask questions I know the answer to just to see if the person answering the question really knows what they are talking about...every answer prompt and correct).
For customer service, I can't remember the last time I dealt with a more responsive company.

Playing for as long as I have, having taught my self and even done some custom set up on guitars I knew the questions to ask in advance (though most are answered on the site in Windows video form if you look around).
If this guitar were stolen I would definitely replace it. If I could afford it I would replace it with the next model up (only because the ZAD 80 can be purchased as an acoustic/electric) and it makes recording much easier.
I would recommend a Zager guitar to anyone who was looking. If it were being purchased as a student guitar, that student wouldn't have to upgrade for a very long time. If being purchased as a gig instrument, like I said, I would prefer an acoustic/electric. But being homebound that really isn't an issue for me any more. So don't think twice about giving them a try.
Lastly, Denny Zager also has developed a guitar teching method over the years which is on his site with downloadable PDF files of music, hand positions for chords, MANY hours of streaming video of lessons, talks with students, playing techniques and more than I can mention here. At the time of this writing he offers full on line access for a very minimal fee (based on 1, 6 or 12 month's worth of lessons). I charged more for 1 lesson than he charges for a year's membership. Also worth looking in to, even for an experienced player.

I had real problems with the neck of this guitar. When I sent it back to Zager for repair, they put a bridge the size of the Golden Gate Bridge to raise the strings so they didn't hit frets. This is a good guitar for the price, but nowhere near the top line guitars that the company likes to claim as its compatriots.

I have have a very respectable collection of acoustic guitars. I always made an effort to play them all every single day. Then recently my Zager ZAD-50 came in, and the others are collecting dust. IM thinking about selling them to accumulate some cash to get a higher end Zager. The action and playability are not just great or amazing, these adjectives don't say it. These guitars are the end all, there is no guitar no matter how expensive or what the brand name that can compare to these guitars in action or playability. Denny Zager does it right, give it a try and you will lose interest in your other guitars because you wont be able to put down your Zager.

The neck is wide and shallow with wide string spacing; this guitar is set up for finger style picking and I believe, will inhibit quick chord changes. Probabaly OK for a beginner, but you'll quickly outgrow this instrument.

Okay, this is where I was disappointed. I purchared this guitar in October of 2005. The action, which I described as ridiculously low, was just that. In March of 2006, a little after 5 months of regular use, I developed a horrible fret buzz on the Low E and A string. Basically, these strings could not be played as they buzzed all over the fret board. Inspecting the saddles, you could see that there was barely any material that supported the strings above the frets; I mean the strings were literally sitting on the frets. An e-mail to Zager customer got a prompt reply. Their advice, rotate the truss adjustment in 1/4 increments, counter clockwise, until the fret buzz disappeared. Over the course of a week and a half, I rotated the truss nut to the point where it fell off the rod, and the buzz still remained. Another e-mail to Zager and they replied to send it back, at my own expense, for repair. The shipping cost me $45.00, and when I received it back, it had a new saddle that had the strings 7/32 above the 12th fret (On the low E). This was the exact opposite of what I had before. Now, I had an instrument that was unplayable due to the extreme high action, and I was out $45.00 to boot. No more e-mails to Zager. Since I have played bass over 20 years, I did some research and removed the saddle and shaved the bottom on a flat file until I got the string height down to 3/32 on the low E. I was very disappointed that a "master luthier" let this instrument leave his shop with an unplayable action. Additionally, why did I have to pay for the return shipping the first time???? This is what Denny raves about; how his guitars play so much easier and better, because of his "expert" string science. Please! His supposed "string science" is just a proper set up, nothing more. Why would he return a customer's guitar with an action that required gorilla strength to play? I suspect that the initial low action was ok until I gained some considence in strumming and chord changes. After that, if one strummed the guitar to achieve volume and emphasis, the thing buzzed like a bee hive. Also, I have never seen an instrument's truss not completely loosened with no effect on the amount of neck relief. I suspect that the truss rod is probably inoperable, but I'm not spending another $45.00 for Denny's expertise. Very disappointing.

I wouldn't replace this guitar. Don't be fooled about all this "string science" malarky. Any acoustic can be set up well by an experienced guitar technician, or by the owner, if they follow some basic guidelines and are patient. The Zager Zad 50, IMHO, is nothing more than an inexpensive, beginner guitar, that has some set-up modifications done. Maybe Denny and Esteban can team up for an infomercial!!! I have recently played Epiphone Masterbuilt series and they felt and played well. That's what my next purchase will be.

EZ-Play Zager ZAD-50 Acoustic Black
I will be 55 this year and just started playing six months ago. I was using a borrowed Applause until last week when I purchased the ZAD-50. I wanted to make sure I was going to stick with it this time before buying my own. I had a cheap guitar when I was 13 and messed around with it for a couple months and again purchased another cheap guitar when I was 40, only to give it up again after a few months. I feel like I just struck Gold! This Zager sounds great and is so easy to fret compared to the other guitars that I have played on. A friend let me borrow his Martin D35 over night before I bought the Zager, he wanted me to feel and hear the difference so I would know that I had made a mistake in buying the Zager. WRONG!!! The Zager is a keeper and I can highly recommend it. The big reason being, that it is so easy to fret. The second reason being is that unless your loaded why spend money you don't have to for a great sounding guitar? I admit I was skeptical, seemed to me like there just had to be something they weren't mentioning. Truly is a great deal.
Sound
:

I took a Martin D35 home overnight and would like to say that it did sound wonderful. But on the otherhand this Zager has great sound also. Don't know about you but I'm kinda frugal. If I can get the same effect for a fourth of the price. Thats a no brainer!

This guitar will stand up against any $2000-$3000 guitar. I haven't played for years (raising children i gave it up). I would buy another one but probably an acoustic/electric with a cypress top but I would not trade the one I have.

I bought my first guitar 7 years ago at the age of 46. It is a Mitchell dreadnought, no electronics. I think I paid around $250.00. I purchased the Zager about 6 months ago. In that time I picked up the Mitchell twice, both times for about 5 minutes. There is no comparison. The Zager is easier to play, sounds louder and somewhat more bright. Nice sustain too.
I tried some Martins and Taylors in various music stores but for the price I don't think this can be beat. It really is a joy to play. I can go for hours with a 6 pack and some Homespun videos and my fingers are none the worse for wear. If anything I still grip the strings harder than I have to.
I would definetly buy this guitar again, maybe add the electronis next time.
Don't think I will "singing along with Mitch" any more.

I admit to being a guitar snob. I generally only buy USA made instruments made prior to 1970 (with the exception of Fender Custom Shop guitars- Well done Fender!)
The set-up is better than ANY acoustic guitar I have owned or played. No, the action is not as low as my original '57 Strat, or my Custom Shop '62 reissue Strat, but the transition is very easy. I have examined this guitar with a magnifying glass and can find no flaws. Binding, rosette, bracing, frets, all perfect. I only wish it has a front strap ped, & will add one.

I've only owned this guitar for a week, but I'm confident that this guitar will be as durable and dependable as any fine acoustic. These are not solidbody guitars, folks, and require a little extra care and protection.
After 35+ years of playing, I avoid Mr. Murphy by always having a back-up. (Now you understand why a guitar snob would buy a $400 guitar). But my ZAD-50 will NOT only be used as a back-up!

Again, I'm a novice so I'll mainly passon what was shared with be by professionals that picked up this guitar. The set up is excellent and they are amazed the string height is so low with no fret buzz. One player did what he called "speed work" playing chords/notes as fast as possible... then did the same exercise on the Zager, and you could tell the sound was more crisp and clear because the Zager "string science" was more forgiving to improper finger spacing. Hey if it can make a professional player sound better, I know its going to help me as a beginner!

Zager guitars are really fantastic. I have purchased two of them, and love them both. These guitars are manufactured specially with a thinner neck, and lowered strings. They are very easy to play, and have a fantastic sound. They tune very easily, and stay in tune.
My guitars are beautifully made with a great finish, perfect neck, finely adjusted frets, and easy tuners. The think neck is perfect for my smaller hands.
You have a choice of a molded or regular case. I have one each, and both are high quality and durable. My guitar was sent with lots of extras such as case key, and humidifier.

Tone, playability and quality is equal to guitars costing thousands. Denny Zager claims that he has made it possible for anyone to own a quality guitar, and he is absolutely right.

The Zager ZAD-50 that I own is a solid top acoustic made for Zager by Martin & Co. The ZAD 50 Acoustic is loaded with features; 20 frets on a Rosewood fret board, a solid Spruce top, Mahogany back and sides, sealed Grover tuning gears, Abalone inlay rosette, Tortoise shell pick guard, Gloss finish, Hand carved custom nut, Hand carved custom saddle, Hand filed frets, Scalloped X-bracing, Rosewood bridge, Genuine "Martin" strings, a Lifetime warranty, a 100% money back guarantee, and to me the most important feature of all is Denny Zager's "EZ Play" System.
"EZ-Play" Guitars are modified by Master Guitar Luthier Denny Zager to play easier than any other guitar made. The EZ-Play modification process involves:
Lowering the strings closer to the fret board so you no longer have to press hard to form a chord.
Widening the stance of the strings so there is more space for your fingers, while keeping the neck shallow so its easy for small hands.
Modifying the saddle, bridge, neck and nut in harmony to amplify the tone and resonance.
The result is a guitar that is 50% easier to play with a sound that rivals guitars costing 5 times the price.
As a 58 year old begining guitar player I looked for what I thought would be the best valued instrument for me to learn with. While I realize that there is no way around practice and musical ability, I believe that because of the features of my Zager it will be the easist guitar for me to learn on.
Sound
:

As a novice with no prior guitar playing experience I can only tell you that it sure is easier to press the strings to the fret board, making it easier to play chords. I have listened closely to various guitars and their individual tones and I would say that as the ZAD 50 is set up it has a wondrful bright sound. To me, beautiful music can be made by any quality instrument regardless of the range of it's tone, and this guitar has loads of that necessary ingredient - quality!

Zager's EZ Play set up was the main draw for me to this quitar and I have not been disappointed. The action is just as promised! Even though I have not developed much ability with it yet I can tell you that the set up works for me.
When it comes to the fit and finish, the appearence of this guitar is, well, I'll just call this icing on the cake! The ZAD 50 has just the right amount of "fancy", it looks terrific without being overdone or gaudy. Some folks may describe this as understated beauty, but I say it's just my style! Hold one of these in your hands and you'll know what I mean! Not only do the pieces of the guitar fit together as they should, more importantly, thanks to Denny's improvements, it fits the player. It's not only the string technology that makes this go, the redesigned neck aids in finger reach.
I cannot say the finish on mine was 100% perfect. It came to me with a small piece of sawdust(?) embeded in the glossy finish near the sound hole, you have to look close to see it, it is something I can live with. But if I had requested a relacement it would have been offered. Otherwise the finish and looks of this guitar is fantastic, the quality craftmanship used in it's construction is apparent.

Predicting reliability of any manmade device calls for some speculation on the part of the predictor. I can tell you that from what I've seen in it's solid build, smooth working Grover tuning gears, tight fitting joints, and deep, lustrous glossy finish that appears to offer a long lasting durable coat of exterior protection, I would say that the ZAD 50 should last for many, many years. Zager guitars are warrented for a lifetime of use!

I haven't had to contact for any repair/warrenty work, but since Zager guitars are offered only through their own shop, every new guitar ordered is handled by the Zagers personally. So everyone has at least some contact with the owners of this business. My experience with them has been pleasant, courteous, and they haven't given me any reason to expect anything different in the future. They shipped my guitar and case promptly and responded to email in less than a day.

As stated earlier I am a novice at guitar playing. If this guitar was lost or stolen I would quickly replace it with another of the same. I purchased it for the EZ Play string setup with the added bonus of it being a beatiful instrument to play on. I purchased an acoustic model with no electronics because I want this hobby to be low tech; no electronics, no wires, no batteries, no amplifiers, the least amount of ingredients that can fail or go wrong. I want to keep it simple!
Now if I can find the time to practise!

Sound

How does it suit your music style?
I like to play singer/song writter stlye and this guitar is suiting that.
What amps and effects are you using it with?No Amp
What kind of sounds can the guitar make? How much variety?
The sound is Rich and full when I use only my thumb and fingers, it is bright with a pick. The sound is balanced-the high notes do not die off.
I like that I can play notes and chords cleanly. I like the look of this guitar, it is a Sunburst. I continue to look at it inside and out. I would like an upgrade on the pegs, but I can do that myself, and I wish the dot markers on the frett board where albalone, but it is not neccessary to how the guitar plays, and does not take away from the overall apperance.
Action, Fit, & Finish

the guitar set-up by luthier Denny Zager in Nebraska
it has good action, I am able to play music for the first time. After a week I am already putting togethr my own chord and note arrangments.
the top is well matched.
I am happy with The sunburst finish, which is not "museum grade (like you'd get on a $4000 Martin ), but it is very attractive to look at.
The bridge routing is correct and expertly done by hand.
I am picky about things I buy and I am very happy with this guitar. Sound and play is the most imporatant thing for me.
Reliability/Durability

I belive this guitar would withstand live playing.
Does the hardware seem like it will last? Yes
Are the strap buttons solid? Yes
Is the finish good enough to last? yes
Can you depend on it? so far yes I have been playing it almost non stop, it has not let me down yet.
Would you use it on a gig without a backup?
I do not know if I will be playing gigs, but it puts out a big full sound with a thin pick.

Ok my contact so far has been in asking questions about the ZAD 50, I wanted to know about the woods of the box, and material of the bridge, nut and saddle, and construction and they where very friendly and helpful.
Emails answered in a timely and professional manner.
No repair work needed to date.
It has a lifetime warrenty.

How long have you been playing? Since about March 27 2006
Is there something you wish you had asked before buying this guitar?
No
If it were stolen or lost, would you buy it again or get something else? Yes
What do you love about it? What is your favorite feature? I love it's sound that when I unpacked it it was still in tune, and it's looks.
What do you hate? I haven't found a thing to hate.
What is your favorite feature?
all the hand set up work that was done by D. Zager, before I recieved it, that has made it playable and good sounding.
Anything you wish it had? Natural string pegs, but that is a minor thing. I am going to this one a 10 as this guitar I believe is a great value for the dollar spent. I did visit guitar shops in Sioux Falls, and the ones they offered in this price did not do anything for me. I had been playing an Aspen with a loose bridge that sounded as good as the ones they had on the floor, in this price range. I brought home books from the Library about guitars, and how they made, and what I should look for. Visited many web sites, like Martin, Gibson and Guild, before I decided to buy the ZAD 50. I choose this as it had a money back offer, so I could try it, I liked the way answered my email, I liked that it is set up in a professional manner, and it is a family opperation. I choose to keep it as I love the way it sounds and plays.
Anything else you'd like to share?
I received the Zager - professionally packaged and delivered. I have not played a guitar since 1980, at that time I had not been able to get past learning a few basic chords. My folks gave me the Aspen for Christmas in 78. They purchased it in a local music store, you know the story? high action, hard to play - thought it was me, and put it away?life happens. I now know setup is the biggest factor in how a guitar plays. I have had my Sunburst ZAD 50 for a few days now and I play it for ?hours? every day ? I cannot leave it alone.

I am a 53 year old who decided to teach himself the guitar. It sounds as good as some of the more expensive guitars that I though of buying, and is better than the $900.00 guitar that I did buy. The more experienced guitar players that I hang out with say that it is every bit as good as some of the big names.
Action, Fit, & Finish

It was in perfect tune straight out of the box. The action is outstanding. The strings are very close to the frets and are easy to play. The finish looks very good for the price I paid for the guitar.

I have been playing for about 6 months. I also own a Takamine accoustic electric and I truly prefer this Zad-50 to the more expensive Tak. I work on a big city fire department have one station where everyone plays so we get together on Saturday and Sunday shifts to play. It gives them a chance to laugh at my skill level but they do teach me some good technique. I have introduced them to the Zager guitar method and several of them are going to sign up for the online lessons. During these sessions I don't get to play my own Zager guitar because there is always someone else who wants to try it out. These more experienced guys (some have played for 20 plus years) are very impressed with this guitar. In fact, I am thinking of selling my Tak and getting a Zager-80 Accoustic electric.
I had an opportunity to buy a Martin with a flame maple back that was absolutely drop dead beautiful. It only costs $2700.00. When I told my wife that I wanted to buy it she said, "You are not going to spend $2700.00 on a guitar that, I might add, you do not know how to play!" Well when she started throwing that logic stuff around I knew that I might as well go find a less expensive guitar. That is when I got the Tak. It is pretty nice but is difficult to play. Maybe a better description is that it is painful to play. I had seriously looked at the Zager stuff on line but I could not fondle it before I bought it. I like to be able to feel and touch the things that I want to buy. If you read their add it says you can send it back if you don't like it. Now I wish that I had bought it and left the Tak in the store. I would have bought the Zad-80 to start with. To make a long story short, the Zager is not quite as pretty as some of the others but if it was a girl back in high school you would not be embarrassed to take her to the senior prom either. I will bet that you can't tell the difference in the sound quality between a Zager and some of the most expensive guitars. For a new guitar player, this is the guitar you need both for the quality and the price.

When it was received it was tuned a little bit flat but it may have been due to the weather (hot summer) as much as anything else. The action is low and it is a pleasure to play compared to other guitars. Stays in tune quite well. The fit and finish is commendable, no flaws or blemishes to note.

Researched this guitar for months- havn't played for 30 years- quit because I just couldn't finger chords well with stubby fingers. Ad for this "EZ Play" guitar caught my eye along with heavy positive reviews here and on ebay. Cynical I was but the hype came without risk as you can return this guitar in 30 days no expense.
Solid top dreadnought, natural spruce, rosewood board, grover tuners. The gimmick is the special set up done by Denny Zager to lower the action, increase sustain and widen the nut slightly.
Came with some picks, wrench, a cool t-shirt and a picture of Denny Zager.
Sound
:

Having tried many acoustics in the $200 to $600 range(Martins, Alverez), the sound rates at the top. The sound is bright, bell-like on the higher strings. Bass notes are resonate, but not too boomy. The light guage strings cannot be attacked too hard as the super low action will slightly buzz and you lose the timber. If you are comfortable playing fingerpick style or a delicate pick you are rewarded with sound that is pretty and vibrant which the box projects well. Because the guitar really is "EZ play" your chords are clearer with less muffling on adjacent strings. Maybe this is why the sound is a stand out.

Set up was dead on. Arrived in tune in December and really hasn't gotten out of tune since. Smelled of a recent polish. Zager signs the guitar inconspicuously on the back, but this can be removed.

3 months later no problems: finish is durable, resisting my attempts scuff it up with shirt buttons and wristwatch. The guitar is lighter than other acoustics I've owned and doesn't convey that "built like a tank" sensibility, but the workmanship appears better than mass produced so time will tell.

Lifetime warranty-havn't had to test it out. If you get one please note that if you want to return a nondefective guitar, it has to have the protective film still on the pick guard, so keep it on for the first 30 days. The Zagers were easy to contact with questions via email.

Been playing (?) 30 + years sproradically. Own Yamaha and noname acoustic, a Squire tele and US strat. When I showed the guitar to my teacher he played and raved about it. Told me to show it to the store owner who in turn disparaged the guitar (polished turd). It appears that because Zager only sells direct and not through stores there is a lot of so called experts in the business putting the instrument down. I was cynical that a guitar in this price range could be all that is claimed, but the ZAD 50 is the rare product that delivers on the hype. If you are an expierenced player the sound is likely to please. Student level players will have noticeably less difficulty fingering chords. Tried to initially buy used on ebay but the used Zagers sell close to what the new go for-this speaks to something about this item. I would buy again if lost/stolen but would be tempted to try their more pricey mahoganay top model.

This guitar was set up by Mr. Zager using his "string science". I have a Washburn that I paid to have the action lowered and the ZAD-50's is very similar. The wider spacing from nut and saddle modifications works really well for me.

Guitar was made in 2005. It's a dreadnought body style. I have to say that after playing around 20 guitars in price ranges between $500 to $3,500, it sounds better than any guitar under the $1,500 price tag. I am amazed at the quality of the gloss finish, playability (Zager easy Play system) and the inceredible sound. It's spruce with mahogany back and sides and sounds just as good as the Martin D-18 in my opinion.

I play only Christian praise and worship music for which it sounds great. It's non-electric although I would consider buying one of their electric accoustics. It's the brightness (sound of spruce and mahogany) that attracted me to the guitar. The sound is also rich and full.

I used to play a little when I was around 12-15. I stopped and started playing again about 2 months ago. I play at least 4 hours a day since right now I have the time. I definitely would buy it again, especially since I started out with a Big Baby Taylor which sounds like crap compared to this one. I love everything about it accept the strings it comes with and the fact that the strap buttons need replacing. I can easily say that it beats out the Taylors, Fender, Ibanez, Gibson and Marting guitars that I played and had a professional musician play for me at the Guitar Center in Nashville, TN. under the $1,500 price ranges. Great product for the money. Some day I would love to have a custom guitar, but I don't know exactly what I want until I hear more guitars and play longer. This company lives up to what it says. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
