This guitar is a fine piece of craftsmanship, the finish is impeccable and smooth as glass.
Sound

The sound is comparable to a Martin guitar that I paid more than three times for. The neck is perfect and the "Ez-Play" system that Mr. Zager uses makes this the easiest guitar I have ever played . . . I realize that sounds redundant since it is the Ez-play system - but believe me it is and the sound is rich . . no zinging strings. . .

I have not been playing very long at all. I did some research and decided to purchase this guitar. (at the time, the overall rating of this guitar was 9.8 with 97 reviews.) Lifetime Guarantee, (and will pay shipping both ways if you are not satisfied) There is no way anyone would not be satisfied with this guitar, or give it an unfavorable rating. Unless of course they actually don't own one. Alot of that going around it seems.

I ordered a zager 50CE spruce solid top with a mahogany body with electronics and on board tuner.it has a beautifull transparent finish.the neck is not thick and fits my palms well.my fingers are able to reach the 6th string with ease.the strings are soft to the fingers and gentle pressure against the frets is enough to bring out beautifull good tones and volume.the distances between strings are wider than my epiphone dove guitar since i can easily do fingerstyle solo picking.
Sound
:

i do chord strumming and learning with patience solo fingerstyle play. with lighter strings that are lower or closer to the frets,i can produce a good base volume and qualty high pitch sounds.the sounds are solid and there is no scatter or break when sustained.the sounds somehow just comes out with solid tones both in the high and low pitches.i have not used it long enough to know its shortcomings but i am not a very accomplished guitar player[yet]to know this.all i can say is that is is definitely better than my epiphone guitar that i exchanged for my saxophone.

the quality of the guitar as a whole looke very solid.the wood is of good quality with excelent finish, saddle is perfectly fitted,no scratches or blemish nor any loose controls or nuts.my wife said that i have everything i need to play a good guitar music.no excuses.

i wish it should have come with a strap.

This guitar couldn't be any better! I play acoustically around town and just in my own house. My style is alternative I guess...never really thought about it. I haven't actually used it through any amps just yet, but am going to in two weeks!!! I have recorded with it on Logic and Cubase...and it sounds absolutely wonderful. Nice low end with clear highs. The mids are perfect...and with the built in EQ and tuner...it always sounds the way I want it to. The harmonics on the guitar are piercing and sound full. I never want to buy any other kind of guitar as long as I live.

The guitar has this thing called "EZ-play" science that Dennis puts into all his guitars.
The EZ-Play??? modification process involves:
-Lowering the strings closer to the fret board so you no longer have to press hard to form a chord.
-Widening the stance of the strings so there is more space for your fingers, while keeping the neck shallow so its easy for small hands.
Modifying the saddle, bridge, neck and nut in harmony to amplify the tone and resonance.
-The result is a guitar that is 50% easier to play with a sound that rivals guitars costing 5 times the price.
So your answer is that this guitar has some of the best action I have ever felt before. The guitar was even in tune when I received it!!! There were no flaws whatsoever on this beautiful baby.

I am serious about this guitar. I would play it without a backup for sure.....I've never broken a string on this thing except for once...and that was because I tuned the high E really high...really fast. It is a quality guitar and you can really see the work and pride in Dennis through his guitars he makes. The strap buttons are completely solid...I can depend on this thing for everything lol. The finish is absolutely AWESOME! Every time I polish it, it seems like I just bought it brand new. You will never be disappointed with a ZAGER guitar.

I have been playing for three years. I own some other electric guitars. If this guitar were stolen from me...I would find the bastard that did it and kill him. If I couldn't do that, I would buy the same one from the same company. I've have friends who own taylor and martin guitars, and when they play this guitar...they can't believe the quality and craftsmanship for the price I paid. It plays just as good if not better and sounds wonderful!!!
I love everything about this guitar...hands down. My favorite feature is the built in EQ and tuner. I chose this guitar because of the price and its overall beautiful appearance...I already knew that it would sound great.

Acoustic/electric "EZ Play" guitar-Natural gloss finish, mahogany body, solid spruce top. Onboard electronics and tuner, abalone inlays, inlaid rosette, inlay on the back of the body, rosewood bridge, rosewood fret board, Grover tuners. Bridge is rosewood. Saddle and nut are hand-carved as part of Denny Zager's "EZ Play" system. The one thing that is missing is a front strap button. Denny addresses this on his Web site, but I would have preferred the button be installed at the factory. Is this worth giving the guitar a 9? (Purely subjective assessment here).
Sound
:

It's hard to describe the clean sound of this guitar in words. The best way to describe it honestly is to use my wife's words. "It's like playing for years with ear plugs and then taking those ear plugs out and hearing the full tone of the guitar." I couldn't say it better myself. The full-bodied tone and timbre of this instrument are apparent (and wonderful) the first time you strum the strings. I've played this through my Fender Princeton DSP65 and my DeVille (no acoustic amps) and the sound is truly luxurious. The onboard EQ allows for sounds from twang to velvet.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

I play guitars and collect 'em as well. I've looked very closely for imperfections, shortcuts, cheap hardware, etc. Can't find anything to complain about. Frets are hand-filed and rounded by Denny. The saddle looks odd because it is shaved, filed and fit to the guitar. It's not the nice, even, smooth white piece of plastic we normally see. The finish is impeccable. When I consider a guitar, I have a little inspection sheet that I follow. From the top of the headstock to the bottom strap button, I look at everything-inside and out-using a flashlight, mirror, finish microscope, etc. The Zager Web site says Denny inspects every guitar by hand. I can believe it.
Reliability/Durability
:

I haven't used this guitar long enough to tell you about reliability. I will say this; the guitar comes with a lifetime guarantee. I have called the company (toll-free, I might add), spoken to a couple of people, so I know they're accessible. I have no doubt that if there is a problem with the guitar, it will be repaired promptly, properly and with great care. I've owned instruments long enough to know that a guitar is only as good as those who make it and maintain it. I always carry a backup guitar with me. The instrument may be built like a rock, but there is no way to predict accidents, drunk customers or thieves.
Based on the lifetime guarantee, I have to give it high marks.
Customer Support
:

Again, I can't speak to customer support because I haven't needed help. However, as I said above, when I've called or written with a question I'm sure they've heard thousands of times, I've dealt with people who are interested and responsive. I'm fully confident any problem will be handled quickly by Zager and company.
Heck, Zager offers a 60-day money back guarantee, and they pay the shipping if I want to return it. Denny's crazy-like a fox. He knows how tough it is to buy an instrument without ever touching or playing it. What better insurance policy is there?

I've played for more years than I want to admit. I quit for awhile and started again a few years back. I currently own more than two dozen guitars, a Yamaha keyboard, a dozen amps - including Fender, Marshall, Peavey, Crate, Vox, etc. Fenders, Gibsons, imports, customs, acoustics, twelve-strings, ukeleles, etc. - you name it, we've either owned it or it's in our collection. I can afford just about anything I want and my wife encourages me to collect for us (yeah, I DO know how lucky I am). So why did I decide on a Zager? I can play it without pain in my wrist, arm and fingers. I'm not getting any younger, but I still think I'm 20 and want to continue to play as though I am. My wife and I gig together and the Zager's sound, style and feel fit the bill for those jobs.
I have played just about everything from a Monteleone (a very humbling experience) to a J-200 (disappointing) to a D-18 (nearly orgasmic). They're all great guitars, but I can buy three Zagers (including the case) for the cost of one D18 and still have money in my pocket.
Much as I'd hate to have it happen, if I get a scratch or nick on my Zager, I won't feel nearly as suicidal as if I'd done it to my old Hummingbird.
I plan to give updated reviews on this guitar at six months and one year. We'll see if my impressions are

This is a basic acoustic 6 stringer. It came with an allen wrench and an extra set of strings, which I did not expect. It was completely in tune. It was signed by Mr. Zagar with the current date and an individual serial number. The neck is thin enough to accommodate my small hands and the strings are very close to the neck, to make for great ease in playing. It came in a cardboard triangular "case" which nested inside the packing case. The triangle case is reusable and perfect for storing and protecting the guitar from nicks scuffs and home atmosphere changes.

I bought a Zager 50CE direct from the Zagers. I have long been in the market for a new Acoustic/electric for leading worship. I was saving my money for a new Larrivee, but got impatient and figured with the guarantee, I could just send it back at their expense and keep on saving for who knows how long. The 50 has a spruce top and mahogany box. This guitar sounds great plugged in, and there is an onboard tuner - very convenient. I added a hard case with a free humidity guage for 95$. Grover tuners stay in tune all day long. You won't find a better guitar for the money - anywhere.

I wish I could give it a twenty for sound. I was expecting the low action and knew from the photos it was a good looking guitar, but was totally unprepared for the sound. It truly does match the sounds of the real high end Taylors and Larrivee's. The pickup allows for much more diversity in sound, just with the onboard preamp. You'll be surprised at the sound for less than 500$

I have played USA Ovations since 1977. I love the slim neck and extremely low action. I have tried Martin & Taylor and could afford anything I want, but I've always stuck with Ovation, because of the neck action. I have bought many guitars over the years for students, and have found quite a few good deals on old Ovations, primarily because they aren't one of the "big 3" names in guitars. Tradition doesn't bother me; ease of playability is the key to someone sticking with and improving on guitar. It's a waste of money to get something you have to "fight" with to learn to play. A recent student played my guitar and loved the action, but the strings were a little too close together for his fingers. He wanted me to find him something that played with that same low action, but had a slightly wider string set-up. I went to guitar shops and played on everything that looked decent, and even some very expensive Martins and Taylors, just for my own curiosity, since it had been a while. I just wasn't satisfied with anything I played on, and certainly not in his price range. I did some research and found Zager Guitars on ebay. I spent some time at zagerguitars.com and the more I read, the more impressed I became. It looked like this was just what the young man was looking for: fit, finish, electronics, low action but wider string placement, and price range. I decided to take the risk for him and ordered the guitar myself. There didn't really seem to be any risk anyway, since the guitars come with 100% money back guarantee and lifetime guarantee. I ordered a ZAD 50CE and it came in 3 days. I took it out of the box and sat down to "see if this is real." It played like a dream and has a wonderful balanced tone: crisp, clear highs, smooth mids and warm, full lows. It definitely has the feel and sound of a much more expensive guitar. It's low and fast, and all around, the guitar is very sharp looking!! I've watched quite a few of the videos on the website and must say that I agree with Mr. Zager on virtually everything regarding how a guitar is set up and what makes a guitar more comfortable to play. I've adjusted bridges and nuts many times, hand filing them, and have converted every student's guitar over the years to a lighter gauge string. Mr. Zager, however, has got this process down to a real science and I'm very impressed. The frets were hand dressed and the intonation all the way up the neck was perfect. Wow!
I won't be looking for old Ovations for students anymore. I know where to steer them right from the start. Great product at an unbelievable price! BTW, the young man can't put the guitar down, and that's exactly what it takes to go from novice to proficient in a hurry! Keep up the good work!!
A new Zager fan!

I bought this guitar a week back and it just plays awesome! Infact I don't have any good words to explain how cool this guitar plays.
I play both flat pick and finger picking, mostly country and classic rock, and I always had difficulty with finger picking in my old guitar. This one is so ergonomically designed that the fingers align perfectly with the strings and each note comes lound and clear!
This is electric/acustic guitar, however I am not using any amp right now. I love acustic, but bought this combo kind of guitar because I couldn't find a better deal for a combo guitar anywhere (neither on the internet nor in any local stores here in San Jose, CA)... I mean, you tell me where can you get a guitar that's plays like a $2000 guitar but is for sale for only around 500 bucks!, moreover, it's hand crafted and fine tuned by Danny himself!... I'll be amazed if I find a deal better than this...
The guitar is not noisy at all. In fact, one of the videos on Danny's site shows that some guitars might rattle in some dry areas and the guitar comes with an adjustment key (and Danny's video explains how to use that key) that you can use to adjust the guitar to reduce rattle... however, I didn't face any such issue...
What kind of sounds the guitar can make... well... check out Danny play himself on his site: http://www.zagerguitar.com/index.cfm?event=video&vid=zad50ce-solid-top-acoustic-electric-natural
I strongly suggest buying this guitar, for the fact I believe you won't get a better deal... I did almost a month full of research before I bought this guitar, and believe me I researched each site and checked out couple of guitars at the guitar center and other local guitar shops here in San Jose, CA... I am so satisfied with this guitar that I just can't explain it in words...

The guitar is custom crafted for much easy play! It even comes with extra set of Martin & Co. high quality strings! I know, that's not a big deal, but go and try buying a guitar from any store and see if they give you Martin strings for FREE :-)...
I also recieved (with the package) two very light picks... they are extremely thin... I already had quite thin picks, but these are even thinner, and they help ensuring that you don't mess up the strings...
The guitar was flawless, top finishing touches and in perfect condition! This is one part that I was quite worried especially because I feared that ground shipping might create some troubles... wears etc... but no, nothing... the guitar was in perfect condition!

I showed the guitar speks (like the wood quality and all the other stuff that's mentioned on the website) as I didn't have much clew, and they were quite impressed with the guitar quality and the price... they infact said that I might be one of the lucky customers :-)... as that kind of deal is not possible... :-))...
They said that this guitar is built to last, and especially for this kind of price range even if it would last 1/2 the life of a 5000 dollar guitar, I say, what the heck...

I have been playing for an year now, and this is my second guitar. It's just awesome, and as I have put my comments above, you've got to see this guitar to believe it...
I did compare this guitar against others and the only guitar that sounded better than this one was the Martin costing 8000 dollars! and even that... I didn't play it... I took one of my guitarist friends who checked it out... that guitar sounded amazing, but then I couldn't figure out much of a difference between this one and the 8000 dollar guitar, perhaps I am too novice to figure that out... but at least, I didn't find any glaring differences... however I did find a lot of glaring differences between this ZAD-50CE and my old guitar that I bought from a local store for around 300 bucks...
I wish it came with both the bottom and front pegs installed for the guitar strap... I don't use strap though, but after seeing the video on Danny's site as to how ppl can spoil the guitar while installing a strap peg, I just feel that it's way risky to give such kind of a custom made precision instrument to any guitar store to install a peg...

This is a beautiful guitar. The setup by Zager looks to be impeccable. I've had it a relatively short time so I can't tell if anything will come loose but so far it's all good. The action is really incredible. My previous guitar was re-fitted to lower the action and I thought it was pretty good but this one just blows that away. No buzzing, easy to play, chords formed with a mere touch. Really amazing.

Again, it's relatively new but it's been heavily used in that short time. The guitar looks solid and I have no issues.

Lifetime warranty with 100% return rights including shipping both ways. As an internet-based company, they have to do this and I have never heard that Zager has backed away from this warranty. They shipped the guitar one day after the order was placed and it arrived promptly. Dennis, Jr. or Denny Zager himself responds quickly to e-mails. This is a solid company with their eye on quality customer-support.

I told Dennis Zager that I can't imagine going back to my old Yamaha even though I loved that guitar. I love the richness of this relatively inexpensive guitar and I also love the look on people's faces when they pick it up, play it a little and then express surprise at the price. I would recommend this guitar to anyone who is in the market for a sub-$1000 guitar

I've been playing guitar for 40 years both in a band and for pleasure. I've played Gibson, Taylor, Alvaraz,Fender and the
one that comes the closest to the sound of the ZAD-50CE is the Alvaraz but it's not a close 2nd. The sound is so crisp and clear no matter what cord you play.

I fine tuned the strings when I first received the guitar using the awesome built-in auto tuner and the played it for seven hours. I had no fatigue in my fingers or hand. The action is so nice you barely have to touch the strings. I could find nothing wrong with the set-up of this guitar.

I've only had the Zager for a short time but it looks like a very well built guitar. The workmanship that's gone in to making this guitar is second to none. I would not be afraid to use this on stage or anywhere else.

I can't honestly say myself how the customer support is because I haven't had any problems. This guitar was bought by my wife for my birthday and from what she told me the maker of this guitar was nothing but supportive and very helpful in answering her questions prior to the purchase. As for the warranty, it's lifetime. I think that's pretty good.

The finish is very glossy, which looks nice, but would not be my first choice. The built in tuner is a nice addition. The case as well does a very nice job of cradeling the guitar. They threw in an eztra set of Martin string which was a nice touch. The pickup is an active model, which uses a 9 volt.

Normally I don't do testamonials on the things I buy, but I had to let everyone know about this guitar, so here it goes.
I play everything from country, to 80's rock, to playing in my church. I have a fender stage 100, a Peavey transformer 112 and I plug into the PA when available. This guitar has a full bright sound typical of a spruce top. It has a great smooth sound that depending on how hard you play can get very full and bright. It sounds absolutely great throught my Fender amp, along with the sound board at church. I do use a zoom acoustic pedal, more often than not.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The action on this guitar is unmatched, for the price. The action would be comparable to that of a $2000 Taylor, which is what I was going to buy. Plugged in this guitar sounds amazing. I have looked this guitar over very well and can't find any flaws in it at all. Dennis Zager looks these over before he sends them out, and must do a good job, because I can't find so much as a slight blem. The string science that Dennis uses works great, I was definelty a little worried because I have rather large fingers, and have no problem at all. Barre chords on this guitar are a breeze.

I can't tell you how this guitar will hold up, I have not had it that long. I am just going on what I have had in the past and it is very well made. The finish is great, and all the hardware is top notch. I would not go on a gig without a backup, so I can't give that question an honest answer. I give it a 9, based on lack of knowledge on this category.

The customer service I recieved from this company is top notch. It is refreshing to see that there are still people who do business the old fasion way, by putting customer service first.
I needed the guitar by a certain date and they did what it took to get it to me on time. They always answered my e-mails within about 4 hours, and answered all of my questions.

I have been playing for about 10 years now and have owned a lot of guitars. I have currently a martin d-50 which I am now selling, because I like this guitar better. A G&L electric and Ibanez acoustic electric and a few other priceless keepsakes. I wish that this guitar had a front strap peg on it, but I will have someone else install that. This guitar compares with thousand dollar guitars. With a money back guarentee, how can you go wrong, that was a selling point for me, and boy am I glad I did.

I have been playing guitar for forty-plus years and own a Martin D-28 and a Seagull M-C Spuce. I find the Zager is much easier to play than both of the these. Its tone is equal to the rich sound of the Martin. If it were to be lost or stolen I would would replace it with the exact same model. I love this guitar because of its tone, playability, and beauty. I have nothing negative to say about the Zager 50-CE.
Its well worth the cost and I recommend it highly!

I purchased the ZAD50-CE with the natural finish. It's a glossy finish on a cutaway body. Check out the Zager website for the features. What's stated on the website is correct. There is no smoke-blowing on this website. The ease of playing of this guitar is it's #1 feature. The neck is as thin as any I've ever played, which is important to me with having small hands. I rated this as a "9" only because it does not have "Tons of features" (as your #10 rating would suggest); it's an acoustic. It doesn't need "Tons of features!" It does all that I need it to do.

:

I play in an acoustic duo. The ZAD50-CE does exactly what I need. I had a minor issue with the pickup that was completely resolved by the Zager folks. It required shipping the guitar back to them. Their guarantee speaks for itself. 100% satisfaction. I play this instrument directly through a Peavey 600XE mixer. I dont use any effects. I'm very satisfied with the sound of this instrument, both amplified and unplugged.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

This is the easiest to play guitar I have ever owned. I had a minor issue with the setting of the pickup, probably more to do with the saddle. Dennis Jr. provided me instructions on adjusting the saddle, but when that didn't solve the issue, I shipped it back for adjustment. Had it back in just over one week with the issue completely resolved. That was the only "flaw" with the guitar. I have the natural finish. It is as nice as I've seen. The action is as good or better than any instrument I've owned. I rated this "8" only because of needing to send it back for adjustment.
Reliability/Durability
:

So far, I've only used it for two gigs. I can't speak to all the questions in this category. I've used it both times without a backup. I can tell you that after two, three-hour gigs, I had NO finger fatigue, and NO hand cramping. My fingers felt as though I hadn't played at all. I rated this a "7" only because I've only used it twice and can't honestly answer the Durability questions.

100% Lifetime warranty, including free shipping back to them for any repairs. This warranty is ROCK SOLID! I shipped my ZAD50-CE back to have the pickup / saddle adjusted. Dennis answered my initial email within minutes and provided some instructions that could possibly resolve the issue without returning it. When that wasn't successful, my subsequent email was answered (sent and replied to on a Sunday morning) promptly and I was provided a prepaid shipping label for UPS. I sent the guitar back for adjustment and received it back from Zager in 9 days, completely adjusted to my satisfaction. These are the most helpful folks in the business!

I got my first guitar in 1966, so I've been playing for approx. 40 years. Currently, besides the Zager, I have a 1978 Fender Telecaster and a Dean Acoustic. I asked alot of questions before I purchased this instrument and I was making a purchase sight unseen. I do believe the Zager folks answered all my questions, in fact, I was a bit of a pest! I'd buy from Zager again if the guitar was lost of stolen...in a heartbeat. I had been considering purchasing a Garrison before I chose the Zager. I chose this one based on the Guarantee and the testimonials on the website. Call me gullible if you want, but I am completely satisfied with my Zager. What do I hate - Nothing. Favorite Feature - the ease of playing and the incredibly low action with no fret buzz. I would not hesitate to buy another Zager instrument or to recommend Zager to anyone who will listen.

I think the guitar would withstand anything you wanted to do. If I were a proffessional, I think I would certainly have a back up guitar in any case. That would only be smart right? But I do believe my back up would be another Zager. I have played Ovations and Yamaha for years, and the sound and finish do not compare to a Zager.

I have been playing for almost 40 years. I'm left handed, so I have always had to be a bit picky in choosing a guitar. I have played and own Ovations and Yamahas before. If I lost my Zager, I would definitely get another one to replace it. I love the sound and the ez play feature really does make a difference on string bite. The built in tuner is really nice also. I like it more than others I have used on the Ovation models I own. I don't dislike anything about this guitar. I wish it had some mother of pearl inlays on the frets, but that is all i would ask for.

I got my Zager last week, and I have really enjoyed it. I like to finger pick, play chords, and sing. It has a nice, rich sound. My previous guitar, a modified 1970's Alvarez, sounds twangy compared to the clear sound of a good strum on the Zager. Pull-offs and hammer-ons are much easier because of the lowered action.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

The guitar was set up before arrival by Mr. Zager himself. It was well done (all I had to do was retune and put in a fresh battery). I have a cheap fender amp, but the Zager comes in loud and clear with the plug in. Best of all, my two sons (aged 8 and 9) who had previously gotten frustrated by sore fingers on my old Alvarez were able to finger chords and strum for quite a while with the lower action on my new Zager. Their interest in learning guitar is renewed, and I am planning on getting one for each of them.

Being new, I have not yet needed to get it repaired. There is a lifetime warranty nonetheless, which says alot about Zager's confidence in the quality of his guitars. His son, Dennis Zager, Jr., was very kind and e-mailed me promptly about his inventory and was kind enough to inquire about my satisfaction with the guitar.
