This acoustic guitar has a solid cedar top with rosewood back and sides. It looks as good as any guitar four times its price with its abalone inlay around all edges of the face, sound hole, and fret board, in combination with gold plated "Grover" sealed tuning gears. Dreadnought size guitar with rosewood fretboard. Hand filed frets make it very easy on the fingers.

Sound : 10
This guitar has the most beautiful, deep, rich tone. The guitar resonates and has great projection. The sound easy fills every room that I play it in. Its intonation is perfect and harmonics are a breeze on this guitar.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Here is where this Zager really shines. The action is perfect! I've spent hours in several music stores over several months playing all guitars from $700- $4000 and I can honestly say that my ZAD-80 is the best sounding and best playing guitar out of them all. I found a few $3000- $4000 guitars that either sounded as good as or looked as good as my guitar but I haven't found one that could beat my guitar in both sound and playability. The workmanship of this guitar is flawless.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've only had this guitar for 6 months, but I have bumped it several times and it hasn't affected the guitar one bit. I also have a toddler that likes to help me play and my guitar has taken that abuse without skipping a beat. Zager has a lifetime guarantee on all their guitars. This thing is definitely built to last. It tunes easily and always stays in tune.

Customer Support : 10
No "fine print" with Zager- they hold up to every claim they make. One of the biggest reasons I decided to try this guitar was because of Zagers 100% money back guarantee. I first ordered one of their guitars that had been discounted due to some marks on the guitar. It played and sounded perfect but the marks on the guitar were too much for me so when I let them know that I wanted to return the guitar they emailed me a prepaid UPS shipping label. And as soon as they received the guitar a 100% refund was issued immediately with no questions or problems (they even refunded my shipping charge!). No other company does that! Their customer service is hands down the best I have ever seen, anywhere! When I purchased my first Zager guitar, I sent them an email with several questions at around 9pm and to my surprise I received a detailed response within 15 minutes! Their knowledge about guitars has been invaluable to me even though I have played for over six years.

Overall Rating : 10
If you want a $4000 guitar for under $800 then a Zager ZAD-80 acoustic is the only way to go. I also own a ZAD-50 CE, which I love so much that when I found out that Denny Zager was retiring from making guitars I quickly purchased my second Zager guitar. This guitar is one of the best purchases I have ever made. This guitar holds its own against $2000 - $4000 guitars in every category. The thing that I love best about my guitar is the deep, rich tone and it's perfect action and playability. Take my advice and buy a Zager, I bet you'll love your guitar every bit as much as I love mine.

Purchased about 6 months ago - dreadnought with solid cedar top and rosewood b/s, 3-piece back with abalone rosette and purfling, cross inlay fret markers, body & fretboard binding, gold grover tuners, this one's sweet. Standard frets/scale length, gloss finish, and even signed on the back by Denny Zager himself.

Sound : 10
Sweet, mellow sound with full bass and clear trebles - its been compared to high-end Martins and Taylors by a friend who owns several of each

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
top bookmatched well, beautiful amber tone, almost vintage-look. Craftsmanship appears excellent - the only flaw I found is an area on the fingerboard that had been buffed when it was finished (3 or 4 frets on the body)and had a slight shine to the rosewood. When I recently changed the strings I cleaned the fretboard with lemon oil and it is hardly noticeable now.

Reliability/Durability : 9
The guitar is light-weight, which probably contributes to the great sound, but it is well-made and should make several generations if well-cared for. Nice gloss finish, Grovers are good, stays in tune. Wish it had come with a strap button - came with endpin only. Don't gig, but I have never had any problems with it, always been dependable for me.

Customer Support : 10
Very responsive customer service, took the time to answer questions before and after purchase. Great warranty/return policy - I'm sure I could have gotten a replacement because of the overbuff on the fretboard, but it sounded and played so incredible I couldn't part with it! Blem hardly noticeable, sound VERY noticeable.

Overall Rating : 10
Playing over 5 years now, this is my favorite of 2 acoustics, 1 acoustic/electric and 2 vintage Gibson classicals. I would immediately try to get a replacement should something happen to this baby. You can't find this quality anywhere for the price, a great value.

Features : 10
Purchased this guitar for two reasons. (1) The economy has forced me to sell my two high end guitars, (2) I still wanted as close to high end product as possible without the high-end price. Well, I have more than met my expectations. The Zager is not only the easiest playing, best action guitar I have ever played, but the workmanship, materials, and details rival or best both my Martin D 28 and Gibson J 160-e. It is a truly beautiful instrument using materials as good as guitars 3 times the price and Denny Zager's personal set up is second to none.

Sound : 10
This acoustic uses a thinner bracing system than most. It is lightweight but has a sound which I believe is better than both the Martin and the Gibson. The Zager is brand new and beats the aged sound of my other two high end guitars.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Here is where the Zager blows away the expensive competition. The set up is the reason people buy these instruments. Denny Zager sets them up personally. To me it's like having a guitar custom built for me. Can any other owner out there tell me the name of the person who set your guitar up at the factory? He even sent a picture of himself setting up my guitar! Yes, MY exact guitar. And he was kind enough to autograph it. Talk about standing up for your product. The action is ridiculously low without any fret buzz. I looked till my eyes hurt to find a flaw ( over-gluing, loose bridge, warping, saddle problems etc.). There are no flaws. Both my Martin and Gibson needed set up work AFTER purchase and the luthier still couldn't get low action.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I swear, I have heard so many testimonials from guys in bands who take their Zagers to a practice or a gig and the other band members gravitate to this guitar no matter what they are already playing ( from Martins to Taylor high ends). I haven't played in a regular band since college a long time ago but I will have this guitar forever. Even the gold plated Grover tuners just feel more substantial than the Martin or the Gibson tuners. The finish is a beautiful mirror gloss. If I blindfolded a doubter they would be hard pressed to tell the Zager from any similar model in any price range except the action and sound of the Zager would be better.

Customer Support : 10
When you buy a Zager...let me correct that....even before you actually buy a Zager, I exchanged many emails with Denny's son Dennis who answered all of my questions by email personally within minutes! After receiving the guitar I received a follow-up email to make sure I was satisfied. If there is a problem, you actually talk to the person who knows your specific guitar. Does any company ( not just the music business) do that? If I ever have a problem with this guitar ( which will probably never happen) I can talk to the person who knows this guitar. Amazing.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for 30 years. Not only did I get what I paid for, I got more. When I opened the case upon receiving the guitar, I thought they made a mistake and sent me someone's custom made model. The guitar is that beautiful. This should be the only acoustic guitar I will ever need to play ( other than a prized Gibson B-45 12 string). There simply is no better guitar for the money or considerably more money for that matter.

take a look at Zagerguitars.com for specs and materials. It is all right there and the pictures do not lie. This guitar is a beauty !Worth a few minutes and seeing for yourself spares us both.3-piece back is too pretty for my words and the mother -of -pearl inlays are a neon blue that jumps out. There are excellent fotos on the site.Way better in person. The hardshell case is jet-black and velvet lined. It has a humidity and temp sensor attached inside. Sturdy enough to protect and last -if you don't fall down stairs too often. Good hardware latches give a positive and snug closure.Good value .

Sound : 10
This guitar is warm and bright, full and rich. It has a wide range and will surprise a player with its versatility and capability which allows one to play it like ya feel it.From rock to finger-picking it satisfies. Sustain is a pleasant fade and it will ring as clear and as crisp and bright as the player is capable. I instantly knew it was for me as I picked it up and it plays like it was custom fitted to my wide palms and short fingers. Top, mid and bottom range hold their own which is vital to a solo player/song-writer. I will say that until you pick one of these up and play it-and get your eyes opened - it is hard to believe the Zagers' claims-and the testimony. But I am here in Truth to tell you that this guitar not only meets all expectations-but exceeds them across the board. That is a rarity in itself these days. Cannot beat it for the price.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The set-up is a major factor in guitar playability. A properly set-up guitar can make a decent guitar sound good. It can make a good guitar sound a lot better ,and it can make a well-made instrument come to life in its own unique way- a way that will never be known nor felt nor heard- unless done by an expert. Mr. Denny Zager is a Master Luthier. His Zager String Science System for his EZ-Play setups is immediately seen ,felt, and heard upon first encounter. If you have ever picked up an expensive guitar and its reputation-and known it only as a "clunker" - it wasn't set-up to enhance its design and reason for being. The Zager ZAD-80 Acoustic Dreadnought has low action on a straight fretboard. While tuning -up with the gold -plated Grover Heads- the guitar resonates with a vibe and sound that lets you know-this is how it always should be.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This guitar is well-made. The finish is done by someone who cared to give it a long life and to really enhance the beauty of the wood.I looked up and down and all aroung to find one wrong thing-and still have not found a flaw !I cannot recall picking up another guitar and not seeing 1,2, or 3 things instantly-can you ? Wow is the word right there.I suggest you take a look at Zagerguitars.com for yourself to check out the beauty of this instrument-and to check out the specs. Every claim on this site has been true to my experience. I am 56 and have owned and played many a fine and expensive guitar .I have only fallen in love a couple times in over 40 years with any guitar and I fell instantly in love with this one. This guitar is as good as any player.dig that.

Customer Support : 10
lifetime 100% warranty with full satisfaction guaranteed ! The only guitar makers in the trade to fully stand behind their product. This integrity shows in the instrument.First class people who have a righteous product to share and really truly care that people are satisfied with their guitars.Have you ever gotten a "well what do you want me to do about it ?" response from any customer service ? The Zagers ask up front " what can we do for you" and they are accessible for feedback and customer after-sales service. They do not keep you waiting-they respond promptly, professionally and sincerely to see how they can assist you. They truly care about "making it right".I have emailed them several times before ,during, and after my purchase and they answered every question fully and personally .

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing guitar for over 45 years now. With a few months off here and there. I own a Yamaha keyboard and some blues harps. And an upright piano.I have owned a D-28 and an old Martin cowboy guitar. A Les Paul Artist , a Tele, a Vox, an SG, a Carvin (Les Paul ) recently been playing a Fender acoustic,a Goya, and occasional brushes with a 10 k Taylor-courtesy of my friend( his first words were WOW! Nice tone !) an LP Standard and a custom rocket of an Ibanez electric. To mention a few I can recall.I not only would buy this guitar again, I am considering getting one or two others. And one for my brother. This is my everyday player and the EZ Play set-up is all about reducing fatigue and pain in the hands and fingers to allow us to just play when we feel like it -for as long as we feel like it. For the freedom of this alone I highly reccommend this guitar and company-The Zagers are first -class all the way. P.S. And I do not kiss anyone's -ss -believe that. This is my honest review and I am proud to own and play my Zager- check it out. Peace

all ratings are based off of a perfect guitar. i.e. Martin- OMJM

Custom made guitar, solid ceder w/ laminated indian rosewood back and sides. the laminated back and sides are what brings this down to a 9. High quality tuners, abalone inlays in the sound hole and outer bindings. Custom Frets

Sound : 7
I'm not feeling the sound, it seems muffled when i do heavy picking and the mid seems to over power the high. Relatively good sound, but i expected better. John Mayer would not approve.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Action is quite nice but not as good as the hype. There are glue smears every where! on the neck and higher frets. The wood is nice and polished whistle clean, it squeaks in my case. Custom set up is worth the money.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Well built, i'm sure the overused glue will keep everything in tact. Inlays are nicely done, i'm sure I will keep this guitar for at least 10 years. Btw, be prepared to baby your guitar, it's just so beautiful :)

Customer Support : 10
Defiantly the best i've ever encountered, it's like the Nordstrom of the guitar world. Ask them anything and they will reply with pleasure and promptly.

Overall Rating : 8
I did my own appraisal for this guitar. I've played 90% of the expensive martins, taylors, etc. so i have some credibility. the sound ranges in the $1,200-1,600 area.Action ranges from $1,000 - 6,000 i guess. (kind of hard to estimate that). Wood, features such as 3 piece back and grover tuners, $2,500-3,000 guitar. So I firmly believe this guitar is worth at least $2,000-2,300 if sold in guitar center with Martin slapped on the headstock.

Features : 10
This is a dreadnought acoustic guitar with a solid cedar top, solid rosewood sides and back and a deep gloss finish. I recently purchased the guitar new from Denny Zager's website, and it was shipped to me promptly inside an excellent hard case w/digital humidity and temperature sensor ($95 extra, no extra shipping charge). I was amazed at how light the instrument was when I unpacked it. I was expecting it to be reasonably well made, but I honestly had not expected it to be so delicately crafted from such fine woods. The tuners are gold Grovers, and the nut and bridge are finely tuned by Denny Zager to maximize playability. It came with a T-shirt, some picks, a Certificate of Authenticity, and an extra set of Martin strings. Of course, I ordered several more sets of strings immmediately, since I'm wearing them out so fast. I can't put the darned thing down.

Sound : 10
This guitar absolutely sings. The notes ring out clear and strong with just the lightest touch. I'm no expert, but the sustain and harmonics, the clarity and warmth of the sound, and the tonal response I get to whatever I do just knocks my socks off. I'm mostly a finger picker, but I do use a flat pick, too. The guitar plays so easily and predictably I'm even trying a little Flamenco (did I spell that right?). It's fair to say that it suits my playing style perfectly (I played lead guitar in various garage bands in the 60's and 70's, but have mellowed a bit with age).

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The guitar was beautifully set up, tuned and ready to play right out of the shipping carton. I was a little leary of buying a guitar with a rosewood fretboard, but the piece of wood used on this guitar is just as dense and tight-grained as I would have expected an ebony board to be. It feels great under my fingers, and the carefully dressed frets and well-tuned action make it a joy to play. I can't put it down. I find myself playing in front of a mirror so I can be the one who gets to enjoy looking at this beautiful instrument. I did find one small glue spot at the neck joint, and the rosewood neck could have been a shade darker to better match the back and sides; but for the price I paid and what I got, I'm not complaining. Denny even says he's primarily committed to providing an instrument that maximizes tone and playability over fit and finish, but the combination of solid cedar and rosewood with beautiful bindings all around and elegant inlays and a deep, rich finish is an unbelievable deal for 750 bucks.

Reliability/Durability : 10
The hardware is excellent quality (I did see a speck of tarnish on one of the gold Grovers), and the finish is deep and beautifully applied. All joints are solid. I would judge this to be an instrument that will only improve with age. Like any fine guitar, I would not have dreamed of buying it without a good quality hard case. The delicate woods of the top, sides and back require care and environmental control, but given that, should return many years of increasingly pleasing tones and playability.

Customer Support : 10
This company has one of the best websites and support service networks of any company I've seen on the internet, in any business.
If I call, I get an answer. If I e-mail, I get a reply: I don't know if it's always the case, but late one Saturday I got a reply e-mail from Dennis, Jr. (it's clearly a family business) within 30 minutes. Their guarantee is lifetime, 100%. When I ordered the guitar I was immediately directed to hours of on-line video sessions with Denny demonstrating how to care for, string, tune, adjust, etc. the new guitar. And they have put together a huge library of on-line videos including lessons for all skill levels, Denny's own arrangements of dozens of popular songs, tabs, and enough information and help to keep anyone busy for years.

Overall Rating : 10
I started playing 45 years ago. Career and family took me to another place for a long time, but this guitar has helped me re-discover the passion I had years ago for music and playing guitar. I've always had at least one guitar since I left full-time involvement (inexpensive acoustics, a Peavey Strat), but this one has truly inspired me to play again. Over the coming years I will probably spend time comparing this guitar to others out there, and may even buy one or two (or three or four). Or very possibly another Zager, if I can find one. I'll report back. But I'm grateful to Zager Guitars for providing a high quality product at an extremely reasonable price with unbeatable support. They gave me back the music.

From Denny Zager, the ZAD80 is the top of the line acoustic guitar sans any on board electronics. It is the standard Dreadnaught size with light weight, high gloss finish, solid cedar top, 3 piece rosewood back, and rosewood sides. To round out the eye candy, the ZAD80 has abalone inlays on the edges, face, soundhole and back, sealed gold Grovers, and abalone rosettes on the fretboard. The first impression is one of very high quality, and at just under $900 with case and freight, it just might be an absolute steal.

Sound : 10
My 1969 Martin D-28 Brazilian Rosewood is THE guitar I use as my standard when comparing acoustic guitars. It sounds very "mature" with great tonal balance, projection, and sustain. While I wouldn't put the Zad80 in that category, it is a sweet sounding instrument. The cead seems to impart a somewhat mellow tone, the action is excellent with no buzzes or clunks. It simply compares to many guitars costing thousands more and puts some to shame.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I am no celebrity looking for cash, nor am I the greatest player on earth. While I have read some reviews on these guitars that were very critical, this one is quite simply first rate. Great action, fit, finish, wood kit, and style, and is a joy to play. Even my wife's dead ears have perked up when I pick around. I play a little of several styles and this guitar is capable at all of them. Frankly, it plays much better than I.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Well, my 1969 Martin has been lovingly cared for since new, and it has a stress line or two showing, and the pick guard is pulling awau, so I doubt any guitar could survive that many years without some minor imperfections showing. I doubt this ZAD80, with proper care, would be any different. Very durable and reliable.

Customer Support : 10
Frankly, anyone who is disatisfied with Zager as a company, must be impossible to satisfy. They not only talk the talk, buy truly walk the walk. Lifetime warranty, send it back for full refund including freight? If you received one that wasn't quite up to snuff, this is always possible in manufacturing and sales, then Zager WILL fix your problem.

Overall Rating : 10
While the Zager family is human and I'm sure mistakes have taken place, anyone who slams this company must have a hidden agenda. Realizing not every person knows guitars and may not have the ability to accurately compare, it just makes sense someone out there would be dissapointed. Not me! It's to their credit an American family is willing to take on the "big boys" and compete effectively. It's too bad the run is about over for these guitars. Those who miss out will likely have to pay a much higher price later.

This new Zagar guitar is beautiful, clean, well crafted and perfectly set up. The main features I love is the extremely low action, the slightly wider spaces strings and the ease of playability. As a dreadnaught accoustic, there are few features other than the feel, sound a playbility....this is a great guitar and considering the price, it is a gem.

Sound : No Opinion
This guitar sounds great. It is wonderful in the lows, mids and highs. It has rich sound, similar to my Martin D28 and yet the sound is a little brighter.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I have never bought a guitar from via the internet, so I was a little nervous about the quality of sound, finish, etc. When it arrived I put is under bright lights and examined every detial, looking for a flaw or something to disappoint me. I not only found nothing wrong with it but am amazed at the worksmanship. The wood is gorgeous, the finish is without flaw and there is no evidence to suggest there has been any modification at all. It looks like it came right from a famous manufacturer like Taylor. A beautiful instrument and for less than $750....I am blown away. Oh and the case is wonderful as well.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I just got it so cannot comment here. the intital quality is perfect so I look forward to so many years of enjoyment.

I corresponded iwth Denny's son Dennis. We must have exchanged 10 emails to help me answer my questions, choose the right model and arrange for expedited shipping. What a delight my serivce was. When I recieved my guitar is had a few wonderful picks, some extra strings, some great literature about my guitar and a poloroid of Denny playing my car just beofre it was shipped to me. I am a big fan!

Overall Rating : No Opinion
This guitar is fabulous. I have a Martin D28 and a Taylor GS7 which I love and yet I honestly believe this new Zager ZAD 80 is easier to play and sounds every bit as great as my others. I ordered this guitar based on all of the things I had heard about how Denny sets up his guitars with low action and slighlty larger space between the strings and a few other small but critical tweaks in "string science". I spent less than half of the money on this guitars as my others and it sounds as good or dare say, even a little better.

As far as the sound of my Zager guitar here is my testimoney on it: I just received my Zager Guitar and I felt obligated to let all posible buyers out there know that these Guitars are the REAL DEAL. With the 100% money back guarentee I felt like I had nothing to lose. My guitar instructer has been playing guitars and teaching professional guitar players for over 20 years. I had asked him about purchasing a new guitar and he recomended at the time a Martin D-28. When I brought my new guitar to my lesson this week, he was so amazed by the quality, the sound, and how easy it was to play. He said that he will now recomend the Zagar company to anybody in the market of purchasing a new guitar. In less than a week my quality of guitar playing has already improved. Save yourself the money and buy a $ 2,000 guitar for under a $ 1,000 with the case. What a great experiance it has been. I have no dislakes at all.

Guitar has all the features of a high end guitar Solid cedar Top,rosewood fret, grover tuners, mohaghony body. Also included were an additional set of Martin strings, some picks and a t-shirt. None of the extras were advertised, so it was a nice surprise. Has a beautiful gloss finish of museum quality with a beautiful abalone inlay.

Sound : 10
Great sound, Rich deep tone with amazing sustain. Highs, mids, and lows all right on the money.

Action, Fit, & Finish : No Opinion
Family run operation. Guitar is set up and worked on by Zenny himself. Arrived in mint condition perfectly in tune. The action is outstanding. It"s easy on your fingers. I have some nerve damage in my fingers from an old injury, and have never played a guitar that feels this comfortable to play.

Reliability/Durability : 10
It seems to be sturdy and reliable although it is has not been in my home all that long. I have no doubt about it's ability or it's warrantee.

Customer Support : 10
This is where it counts. I had an issue with the first guitar I was sent. It had a defect that was not visable upon initial inspection. When I contacted Zager Guitars I got an imediate responce from Dennis Zager and delt only with him throughout the entire process. He said "if you do not like the guitar we want it back, and will give you a full refund. One unhappy customer is one too many". I asked for a new guitar and was sent one right away. Shipping charges were covered both ways. This is a class act.

Overall Rating : 10
I shopped for a guitar for about 3 months with a 1,000$ budget. I played evrything I could get my hands on in that price range. I have owned high end Martins in the past I don't think I could have done better. I am no expert and am not claiming this sounds better than guitars that cost five times more. It does sound and look better than any guitar you will find in the 750.00$ range. That's what I payed for it. I did play guitars that cost twice as much. It's not hard to figure out how much extra you pay for brand names, someone has to pay for the advertising and marketing. This a smart buy. Well worth the money with a lfetime guarantee. I will be buying my son one for xmas. Because he is not aloud to touch mine.

This beautiful guitar is thoughly and completely described and pictured in the Zager web site (zagerguitar.com) It is appointed with very tastefully done abalone accents, gloss finish, golden colored grover tuners, rosewood fretboard, solid cedar top and rosewood back and sides (which look to me to be laminated to mahogany substrata). The neck is a custom design that seems very much like a Tayor. All in all it is a beautiful execution of a great design.

Sound : 10
The guitar provides a full rich sound. Bass notes are big, not boomy, trebles are clear, clean, bright and fully resonate. Sustain is wonderful.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The factory set up was excellent. No buzzes. action is low, intonation is great, it frets well all up and down the neck without undue string pressure. Tunes easily and holds tuning well. No complaints here!

Reliability/Durability : 10
Although I have had it only a couple of weeks, it seems to me to of excellent durability and certainly reliable. I think time will prove this to be the case.

Customer Support : 10
One of the things that attracted me to the guitar was the unconditional lifetime warranty and the "money back" (including shipping both ways) offer if I was not totally satisfied. One simply can't loose with that kind of assurance. I ordered it on a Thursday afternoon and received it the following Wednesday. Every question was answered quickly and honestly with utmost concern for my satisfaction. Since receiving it I haven't had occasion to ask for further help of service, but I have no doubt of their sincere intent toward customer satisfaction -- as a example, that tell me if anything ever goes wrong, they will ship me a new guitar and arrange for my old unit to be picked up at not expense to me.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been in and out of playing music of various kinds for more that 50 years. My son is an avid guitarist with over 35 yrs of playing blues and jazz and was completely impressed. I compared it with Martins and Taylors in the $1,000 price range and felt this guitar was equally impressive in all respects.

The Zager ZAD 80 has a solid cedar top with rosewood back and sides. The back is made using 3 pieces. It has beautiful abalone inlay and gold plated Grover sealed tuning gears. It is a great looking guitar with a perfect finish. It is much better looking in person than on the web.

Sound : 10
The sound is better than what I expected. I have a classical guitar and love the warm rich tone. I also have the ZAD 50 black and know it has a clean bright sound. But the ZAD 80 blew me away! The tone is very warm and better than other high end guitars. People don't have to spend thousands to get a great sounding guitar.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Denny Zager did an excellent job at setting it up. I couldn't play for hours like I do if my fingers were sore. I could not find any flaws. It's scary that he can provide an excellent guitar that people can play and other companies that have been selling for decades can't or don't care to. His EZ-Play string science really is a science. In plain English it works! I've read negative reviews and just don't understand how people miss it. Yes I could spend thousands and get a high end guitar with low action and have it play like a Zager. Well DA why don't I save thousands and get a Zager? Isn't the end product in playing the guitar sound and playability?

Reliability/Durability : 10
This is my second Zager. The first one I had is still in great condition and it's 3 years old. Yes I can depend on it and the Zagers do stand behind their products. Fear not.

Customer Support : 10
The support that Dennis Zager gives is well beyond any company that I have ever dealt with. Most internet companies don't have a live human to help their customers. Dennis got back to me within 24 hours and even shipped the guitar in good faith that I would send the balance in the mail! A 10 isn't good enough with this company it's 100. Other companies should learn how to work with people like the Zagers do.
I have signed up for the lessons because of the great customer support. Years ago I signed up but couldn't take them. Dennis graciously extended my time for free. And I bought a second Zager guitar.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for a couple years. I have a Martin, Yamaha classical and a Zager 50 black. I bought the ZAD 50 a few years ago. My brother is taking guitar lessons and he bought a beginners guitar. At the store they told him buy a cheap one and after he learns how to play they can lower the action to make it easier to play. They have it backwards!! I gave him my ZAD 50 so I called Dennis and bought a ZAD 80 for myself. So yes I did replace it and would a thousand times over.

PS-my brother took the ZAD 50 to class and his teacher was blown away and is now telling his students about Zager guitars. They commented on the beautiful sound quality and how easy it was to play.

Absolutely beautiful guitar. This is my first and I was extremely impressed with the finish and workmanship! I received much more than I expected for the $$$.

Sound : 10
Has a smooth clean sound to it...better than I have heard from other more expensive guitars. No buzz, and VERY easy to play without having to cut the tips of my fingers to get a good sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I have not seen any flaws in this guitar. I am a beginner but have had several others look closely at it who know what they are looking for. Every guitar player who has looked at it has been extremely impressed with the workmanship.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Came with a case which the guitar fits in perfectly! Also included was an extra set of strings, pics, and a humidity sensor for the case. Lifetime warranty. I plan on taking good care of this guitar but so far has proved VERY durabile and solid.

Customer Support : 10
The personal touch with a picture of Denny tuning MY guitar included was very awesome. I also got a free video lesson which I plan on making use of once I learn some basics first. I emailed Denny once I received the guitar (which only took 5 days from when I purchased it) and I received a response that same evening. I never expected such prompt delivery and friendly customer service.

Overall Rating : 10
I did a lot of comparison in quality and prices and seeked advice of other guitar players before buying this one. I am so glad I chose the Zager Zad80. It has been soooo easy to learn to play and I feel that it will grow with me as I get more skilled. I LOVE the sound and the ease of play. I have tried out many guitars and this one is by far the best and easiest to learn on...and the price can't be beat.

I did alot of homework both on the internet and visiting 6 music stores. I compared solid wood guitars like Martins and Taylors and laminated wood guitars like Blueridges and low end Martins and then ordered the Zager ZAD 80. This guitar had a solid cedar top and laminated rosewood back and sides. The color and grain of the wood is really nice. It looks like a very expensive guitar. It came with what I would call custom set up. The strings are further apart from each other than any other guitar I played, which was good for me, I wear XL size gloves. I also ordered the mid range guitar case which is an above average case in my opinion, it came with a humidty gauge.

Sound : 10
The sound of any guitar is subjective, what sounds good to me may not sound good to any one else. However, I had in my head what guitar sound I wanted. I wanted a full rich deep base with good midrange and no tinee sounding treble out of the high strings. And that's pretty much what I have with this ZAD 80 guitar. It has above average sustain. Each string sings out for a long time. What was really amazing is how much better this guitar souneded compared to solid wood guitars that cost alot more. Which prooved to me that just because a guitar is solid wood doesn't automaticly mean it will sound better then all laminated wood guitars. You owe it to yourself to compare for yourself.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The action is not as low as I was expecting it to be. When I read low action in the discrition at the Zager web site, I immediately thought of an electric guitar with really low action. This guitar does not have that low of action, but it's alot better than my 1980 Yamaha G335. There is no string buzzing when plaid normally and the only time I had any was from the low E string when I got carried away strumming to loud. The wood finish is flawless, it has a gloss finsih which makes it look like a really expensive guitar. It really is a good looking guitar. A very high quality look.

Reliability/Durability : 9
This guitar reliabilty should hold up very well as long as it is taken care of. I keep it in the case when not in use. The Grover tuning keys are quality and are gold in color which adds to the over all look of the guitar.

Customer Support : 10
Customer support is where Zager has everyone beat. I e-mailed the company with all my questions and I recieved a very quick response. I was skeptical after reading all of the information on their web site and then all of the glowing reviews, but it's all true. If you are skeptical like I was, e-mail with concerns and questions. Order the guitar and see for yourself. I was fully prepared to send the guitar back if I did not like it and go buy some other guitar. So I was pleasantly surprised with the over all buying experience and the product.

Overall Rating : 10
I started playing in 1968 on a Harmony, sunburst acoustic, moved up to a hollow body electric, later had a 12 string Epiphone and in 1980 my wife bought me a Yamaha FG335 that I have been playing all these years. I did own an Epiphone Les Paul for a while. I compared this guitar to High end and low end Martins, Taylors, Guilds, Larrivee, Parkwoods, Blueridges, Epiphone Mastercraft DR 500's. The highest price guitar I compared it to was a Taylor at about $3,500 and Martin D35 at $2,200. The least expensive was the Blueridge 40 at $495. This guitar in my opinion sounded better then all of them and played better as well. There were two that were very close and cost more. If this guitar ever got stolen would I buy another one, yes!

Check out www.zagerguitar.com for complete list of features such as solid cedar top with rosewood back & sides. Scalloped X bracing, sealed Grover tuners, abalone inlay, hand carved custom nut & bridge, dreadnought size. This guitar is eye candy.

Sound : 10
Rich, full sound with lots of sustain. Holds it's own(maybe even better)than high end Martins & Taylors. I have compared to both - you should do the same...you won't be disappointed. The sound of this guitar will blow you away!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This is a "Custom" guitar so set up was perfect as you would expect. Action low, no buzz. Finish was perfect. One small dark spot on top, HOWEVER, it is characteristic to natural wood. No sharp edges on frets, inlays were perfect.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've only had this guitar a short time but I have no doubt it will withstand my "abuse" and last a lifetime. Guaranteed for life - if you take care as you should "no worries".

I have not had any problems to date. However I suspect the incredible, and I mean INCREDIBLE, communication from Dennis Zager and beautiful workmanship by Denny Zager is an indication of the customer support anyone could expect.

This is the first I have ever left, but felt compelled to do so because of the exceptional value this guitar delivers. On features I give it a 10 because it delivers on structural and cosmetic at all points I love the 3 piece back but would be just as happy with or without the abolone. It does turns heads.

Sound : 10
I've played for over 15 years and have owned the likes of Taylors,Guild,Larivee,Takamine,Dana Borgeouis,Daion etc and this guitar hits the sound I was looking for. The set up Denny does makes the sound balanced, deep and sustain that I was looking for. I might ad a cannon as well. The only other guitar I would compare was the Dana Borgeouis costing thousands more. This is the Martin D35 sound without the price tag and professional set up to boot!!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The set up was the second reason for my purchase. Sound first then the set up. I can play this guitar longer and easier than any other I have owned. I dont know how it works but Denny has figured out how to do it right. As a guitarist I thank you! for those of us who love to rock "accousticly" we solute you!!!

Reliability/Durability : 9
dont know yet but will treat with loving care. This guitar is to much fun to not keep around.

Customer Support : 10
I had originally purchased an OM that arrived in 15* weather, very cold. The temperatures in delivery caused a small crack in the finish. They not only returned and replaced but paid the shipping both ways. They also allowed me to change models to the Zad 80 that I wanted. Family owned and it shows!! You wont find better service, period.

Overall Rating : 10
I received my Zager ZAD80 Acoustic guitar in March of 07. I've been playing guitars since 1983. I currently also have a Taylor 414ce from before I got the Zager. However, now I play the Zager regularly while the Taylor collects dust in the corner. Don't get me wrong the Taylor is a fine instrument and well made, but it costs alot more, doesn't play as easily and doesn't have the resonance of the Zager. Maybe if I compared it to the Taylors in the 700 series with list prices of $3500 it would be more fair to Taylor. But, that said, you're getting that much quality in a Zager for a fraction of the cost. I get crisp clear highs and long sustained lows with the Zager It sounds and plays awesome. I keep the Taylor around just in case I need to plug in. I should probably sell it and buy the ZAD 80CE Acoustic Electric. Merry Christmas to Denny and his Crew. Keep up the tradition, A great guitar at a better price

I play Bluegrass, Folk and Jazz music and I find this instrument suited to all three.

Notes bend easily for a non-electric, and most important, its in tune up the entire neck, on each string. Great balance on both Bass and Treble ends.

Great bridge and string set up. Easiest guitar I've ever played.

It is a new purchase for me, and I am extremely pleased.
I currently play a Koa Martin anniversary model. I find the Zager to play much easier and speak in tune up and down the neck, on All strings.

I am a professional musician and have purchased this instrument as a back up gig instrument. I am very pleased with my purchase.
Thanks, To Danny for his innovative design and set up.

The guitar is beautiful. It has a solid cedar top and rosewood back and sides. Golden grover tuners and a gorgeous abalone inlay also add to its looks and overall presence.

Sound : 10
Sound and playability is what Zager Prides themselves on and rightfully so. The sound is in a word "amazing." I realize that Denny says roughly the same thing on his website, that his guitars will rival the sound of those high priced big name guitars that cost four and 5 times the price. Well I'm happy to report this is 100 percent accurate. The sound is incredible all across the board. It really just is mind blowing that it produces such an amazing tone. I truly only believed that this type of sound quality could only be found by spending thousands of dollars, so lets just say that I couldn't have been happier to be dead wrong. The sound will rival or even surpass any top dollar model on the market. Guaranteed.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This is with out question Zagers best quality. Although the sound is amazing, it's the action that will really put you over the top. His set up result in the easiest playing guitar I have ever picked up, including your taylors, martins, takamines and dozens of others. They design them perfectly. No I'm not sure exactly how, but If you'd like a detailed description visit their website (www.zagerguitar.com) you'll will be able to get a detailed description. But to keep it short and simple and not go off on too much of a tangent. This will hands down be the easiest playing acoustic guitar you will ever play. I'm convinced.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Everything about this guitar is solid, both literally and metaphorically. It's a solid cedar top guitar with a high gloss finish, sealed grover tuners and hand filed frets. I've already taken it out to see how it would preform against others in a live performance. As with just about every other feature it has to offer, It plays live than any other guitar I have previously played. All the hardware is built to last.

Customer Support : 10
Now I really hate to sound like this much of a cheerleader but...I'm really left with no choice. Every guitar they make comes with a lifetime warrantee. Yes that's a LIFETIME warrantee. Plain and simple, I have yet to come across another company that has the same deal. Also their customer service is outstanding. I had a few questions about the guitar before and after I got it. I sent an email to customer support and had answers to all of my questions in under an hour. True professionals over at Zager; they're dying breed. Anything you need at any just about any time during the day/night can be dealt with in a matter of minutes with kindness that just may go unmatched.

Overall Rating : 10
As a whole this is not just the best acoustic guitar for the price, it's the best acoustic guitar period. I've played countless high end acoustics, that don't get me wrong, are very fine instruments with all the attributes you'd expect from a high end model. But the Zager Zad 80 has the features, easier playability and a sound that rivals/surpasses all of them for a fraction of the cost. If you play the acoustic guitar, I can promise you, you will not be dissapointed with Zager. And just to throw it out there, lets just say you weren't so fond of the instrument. They have a full 100% money back guarantee on all of their products, also paying for shipping. So even if you're still skeptical... what do you really have to lose?

I received my ZAD 80 about a year ago--it arrived on time and was beautiful--but now a year later it's even better--the cedar has darkened and it always catches peopples eye at jams etc

Sound : 10
I like to play folk and bluegrass and wanted the deeper cedar tone, and it's definitely filled the bill

I added a K&K pickup and WOW does it sound awesome

It sounds better every day. The reason I didn't review it until now is I'm always skeptical of the stuff you read on line--but this guitar has lived up to all my expectations. Every week I go to guitar center and play the Martins and Taylors and shake my head--you've got to get into big $$ before one sounds as good as mine

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
It did need a slight intonation adjustment but I called and they walked me through it over the phone and even sent me a new set of strings--since then it has been perfect--Marin Xlights (10's) sound the best on this guitar

I bought one with a slight flaw ($50 discount) so other than that it looks great--especially for the price

Reliability/Durability : 9
A year later and it's better than when it was new--I play it everyday and take it to jams around town and have never had any problems

Customer Support : 10
As I said they were very responsive etc--definitely A plus on customer service

Overall Rating : 9
Been playing for 20 years--wish I would have had one of these when I was younger--they play so easily

If lost I cry like a baby--then buy another--actually I'm thinking of buying a ZAD 50 with spruce top for that nice brightness

I must say the K&K pick up I installed is far superior to anything I have heard on other acoustics

I did sign up for the lessons too-but quite frankly they were not my cup of tea

Features : 10
My ZAD80 came with full mother of perl inlay around the complete top, sound hole and neck fret markers. It also has the tortus shell pick guard. The neck is custom made for Zager Guitars by the Martin factory and is different in it's thickness front to back which makes it much easier for bars and reaches. Denny Zager does a complete and very professional setup which makes this guitar a joy to play. I bought mine with the Zager hardshell case which came with a digital temperature and humidity sensor. The guitar fits in the case like a glove with soft long fleece type pile. The guitar is totally protected from movement and damage. A very complete and primo package.

Sound : 10
I have two nice guitars that I had before I purchased the ZAD80. A 1970's vintage Lyle and a Yamaha 12 string. Both are mid priced guitars with very clean full sound. My ZAD80, for very little more money, is noticiably crisper on the highs and mellower on the lows. The cedar top and rosewood sides and back produce an extremely "Sweet" sound. I am told that with age - this guitar will get even better - if that is even possible. I enjoy playing full arrangement songs where I am playing the base, rhythm, background fill and melody all together on my guitar. The sound produced by my ZAD80 across the full range is amazing to hear. It doesn't seem to matter how strong you play it - the sound is pure and undistorted.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The stand-out feature of my ZAD80 is the action. Denny has done his magic on the string spacing and height adjustments. I can't say enough for how nicely it plays. I can practice for hours with no hand fatigue or finger pain. As for Fit - it is a standard Dread with a much nicer neck - and as for finish - All I can say is WOW! Absolutely perfect. Too beautiful to describe - You just have to see it.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I haven't had this guitar long enough to tell you hands down that it will not have a problem. What I can tell you is that I don't have to worry about it. Zager has a rock solid warranty. If ANYTHING happens to go wrong with my ZAD80 - for as long as I own it - Zager will fix it - including the shipping to have it fixed. You show me a company that will stand behind their product like that - I'll tell you that you should buy it.

Customer Support : 10
I haven't had to request customer support on my ZAD80 - but if I do - I have no doubt that the customer service will be top drawer. I have had several occasions to ask questions - both before I purchased and about Denny's lessons. Every time I've emailed Zager Guitar, I have received a very prompt and satisfying response. This company is a family owned company who really care about their customers and potential customers.

Overall Rating : 10
I did a lot of research before I bought my ZAD80. In short - if you are in the market for a very nice acoustic guitar - that means nice looking - nice playing - and nice sounding - you simply can't do better for the money than a Zager. I don't think you can do better even if you are willing to pay three to four times the price of a Zager. You certainly won't find a better company to deal with. If you buy and don't like it for any reason - any reason at all - you get a full refund and they will pay to have it shipped back. How can you possibly go wrong.

The Zager Zad 80 is a full dreadnought with a solid spruce top and rosewood back and sides. (3 Pc back). The high gloss finish is outstanding! It comes with Gold plated Grover tuners, and the sound hole and body is trimmed with Abalone. The look is of a much more expensive guitar. No complaints what so ever on the looks!

Sound : 10
As for the sound? I must admit after months of reading all the outstanding reviews on Zager guitars, I was still very skeptical. But, with a return policy like they offer, I had nothing to lose. In a word, WOW!! If I didn't experience this guitar for myself, I would have never believed it. The sound of this ZAD 80 is incredible! I've owned and played alot of guitars, but this is absolutely the best sounding guitar I have ever owned! I put it right beside my Brothers Martin D45V and other than The 45 projecting a little more than the Zager, I absolutely could not tell them apart! (The Martin better project a little better at $11,000.00!) I don't know how Denny Zager does it, but I really don't care. This is one outstanding guitar for $745.00!! WOW!!!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
As far as I can tell, other than a small tool mark on the edge of the top (under the fingerboard), this guitar is flawless! The action on this thing is just as Zager promised. It is the easiest playing guitar I have ever played! Including my Brothers $11,000.00 Martin D45V. Again, had I not experienced it for myself, I would have never beleived it!

Reliability/Durability : 9
I don't know yet, but with a full lifetime warranty from Zager. I have nothing to lose!! But all appears to be rock solid!

Customer Support : 10
Outstanding family owned company. I asked alot of questions in e-mails and by phone before I bought the guitar. E-mails were answered almost instantly (even at 10:00 on a Sunday night) and all phone conversations were kind and helpful.

Overall Rating : 10
I assure you that all skepticism is gone!! If this guitar were stolen, (after crying like a little girl) I would order another one right away! In my opinion, you will not buy a better sounding, better playing, or better looking guitar for alot more money anywhere! Unless you're planning to spend $11,000.00 to $15,000.00 for a guitar, save your money and purchase a Zager ZAD 80. You will not be disapointed!

From the moment i opened the case, the finish on the ZAD 80 Dreadnought just blew mw away! I would have never believed a guitar costing under $900. could be this nice. The ZAD 80 is a solid cedar top matched with solid rosewood sides, and a three pc. solid rosewood back. Trimmed with abalone around the sound hole and the entire body, matched with the high gloss finish, it is absolutly stunning!! I only found one little tool mark under the neck at the sound hole that is barely noticible. Outstanding workmanship for the $$$!!.

Sound : 9
As for the sound of the ZAD 80? I was pleasantly surprised. It sounds far better than any major brand (including Martin) in the price range that I have ever owned or played. I mostly flat pick, and the guitar is very clean and bright as well as having great low end. Over all it seems a little strong on the mids, but a very pleasing strong. I can't get over the projection of the instrument in this price range!
Well done Denny.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Ok....this is where I have to say I was really sceptical. I had been reading reviews on this "String Science" thing for months. It just sounded to good to be true. Well, it only took about 5 minutes to realize all the claims by Zager are true!! This thing plays and handles easier than any other guitar I've ever had in my hands including my brothers D45V $11,000.00 Martin! I know that sounds hard to believe, but true. It doesn't sound or project as good as the D45V, but it's not far behind. Remember, it cost's less than 1/10th as much!

Reliability/Durability : 9
I havn't had it long enough to know, but Zager offers a full lifetime warranty on thier guitars. Anything ever goes wrong? they will repair or replace it 100% free of charge! It's a no brainer for me....but time will tell how they hold up over the years. The guitar does have gold plated Grover tuners, a bone nut and saddle, and the construction looks as good as any I've seen.

Customer Support : 10
Again.....A full lifetime warranty! Dealing with the Zager family Co?
Could not be any more pleasant. I sent emails with questions on a Sunday night, and had a reply in 10 minutes! Didn't expect that.

Excellant customer support!

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing guitar for 30 years. This is absolutly the most stunning, easiest playing, best sounding guitar I've ever seen for under $900.00! It should cost 3 times that! I thought my Washburn WD45
rare wood that a pro Luthier carved a bone nut and saddle for, and re-worked the action on was nice. (which it was). But this Zager ZAD 80 blows it clear out of the water!! Not even close! Trust me...you will not find a nicer instrument for the money anywhere..anytime!!

Check the Zager website, its all there and was delivered as advertised.

Sound : 9
Rich and full with lots of sustain. I have yet to compare to stiffer opposition such as a Taylor (there is nothing much here in Muscat) but will check against my borthers next month.

I read elsewhere that this is a musical guitar. Seems to state the obvious, but now I own one I find this a fine description.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Action spot on. Low, light and no buzzes at all. Exceptional. Easy to play.
Finish on dressed frets under top E string (only) poorly or even unfinished which spoiled otherwise excellent set up. The frets will play in.

A beautiful looking guitar.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
Too early to say, but looks solid enough. Lifetime guarantee seems rock solid as well - how many manufacturers offer that?

Customer Support : 10
I would like to emphasise the excellent customer support as this is exceptional. Response time on emails is excellent and queries addressed usually within hours.
Zager guarantees all of their guitars for life. My fret problems were quickly resolved. Denny offered three options: refund, replacement or further discount. All three were to Zager account, no quibbles. You cannot ask for more than that.

To anyone considering buying a Zager, do it, you cannot go wrong. Its win win.

Overall Rating : 10
Been playing for 30 years on and off and this is the best acoustic set up I have experienced. I think the guitar is excellent value for money.

Dreadnaught Acoustic Guitar. Cedar top, rosewood laminate back and sides, rosewood bridge and fingerboard, mahogany neck with truss rod. Grover tuners. These are made in Indonesia, at the same factory that produces the Sigma Martins. The guitar has a 14/20 scale. The ZAD 80 has abalone trim and is the higher end of their line. It is a full-featured acoustic, and comes with a free case (used) with a humidistat.

Sound : 10
I am a finger-style player and find this guitar to be just about perfect. I played it against a Taylor DN3, and found it superior. As part of the set-up, Zager widens out the string spacing and lowers the action to a remarkable degree. The sound is rich, and the sustain is amazing. The sound is actually piano-like. Even without picks, the volume a fine...not too loud, but projects well.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Set-up was perfect, and is one of the main selling points of this brand. No visible defects. Top (cedar) has uniform and close grain spacing and is perfectly bookmatched. Rosewood fingerboard and bridge are fine, and the laminated rosewood back and sides are bookmatched as well. Purfling is very beautiful and done with precision.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I believe the guitar will wear well. The company has a no-strings-attached lifetime warrantee, so long as light-gauge strings are used. Too soon to tell, but I see no weak points. I'm not sure I would take it to the beach to play, but that is because of its new-and-perfect fit and finish, NOt because I doubt its durability.

Customer Support : 10
No repairs necessary, but the company sent out an acoustic-electric by mistake and took care of the shipping and replacing quickly and at not cost to me. I was able to play the accoustic-electric till my accoustic arrived. They answer questions quickly and promptly. The are a family-owned company who seem to take pride in their product and es

Been playing for 40 years or so and sold my '67 Gibson B25 on eBay to finance this purchase. I'm pleased with the Zager. It's strongest point is its playability---I can play for hours with no finger pain and strain. I did find it equalled the Taylor DN3 in sound and was superior in set-up. I expect it to be my main guitar for the next 40 years (if I should live so long.)

The Zager ZAD-80 has all of the Zager "EZ-Play" design elements. The top is solid cedar top with a 3 piece rosewood back and sides. This guitar also incorporates the extensive use of abalone inlay around all edges of the face, sound hole, and fret board, in combination with gold plated "Grover" sealed tuning gears. There are 14 frets to the body and another 7 down to the sound hole for a total of 21 frets. The neck is Mahogany and the fret board is rosewood as is the bridge. There is a gloss finish over the natural wood. This particular guitar was made in January of 2007. No electronics on this model and it is not a cutaway. Absolutely stunning guitar. The main feature is the great tone and EZ play string science. The 3 piece rosewood back and sides are beautiful and he abalone inlay around teh entire body is a sight to behold.

On the recommendation of Dennis Zager Jr. I took this guitar to the music store and compare it with other guitars.
While doing the comparison in the store with my Zager I could literally tell the difference in the Zager with the sound. The Zager had more volume and bass than all of the Taylor, Breedlove, Seagull, and Takamine guitars. It didn???t matter which model of these guitars I looked at the Zager was deeper sounding. The Zager did sound like the very top end Martins ($2700) Martins. The kicker though was the beauty of the Zager was far better than anything in its price range and in my opinion was more beautiful than the $2-3K guitars (finish, fret board inlay, body inlay, and 3 piece back). I paid $695 for my discounted ZAD-80 and nothing under $2500 was even close. Frankly nothing over $2500 was close either. I also have a 30 year old Fender Acoustic with cedar top and rosewood back and sides and I give that guitar a 10 in sound, but since this is a new guitar I expect it get better and better. The reason for a nine rating was because of my Fender, but if I compared to the other new guitars I would give Martins a 10 in general and this Zager would be a 10 also. However, none of the new guitars sounded as good as my 30 year old Fender. This is to be expected.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
When I received the guitar the top frets (1-3) were very easy to play but going down the neck to the sound hole the strings were higher than my 2 existing guitars. I e-mailed Dennis Jr. about this and he encouraged me to take my guitar to the music store and compare it with others. See above.

I e-mailed Dennis Jr. with my findings (other guitar string height comparisons) and he immediately (within 1 hour) he sent me a new shipping label and asked if I wanted my money back. No way did I want my money back but I just wanted the string height more uniform down the neck. I offered to pay for the return shipping since I was not returning for a refund just an adjustment. He didn???t take my money. Denny Zager Sr. adjusted the guitar (lowered the action) and shipped it back to me the day after they received it. I have been nothing short of amazed buy the responsiveness of the Zager team. In a world where customer service is nearly dead, Zager guitar sets the gold standard!

Playability is probably a 10 now, however I will rate it a 9 because I sent it back, and because I am still getting use to the string science. As the strings are spaced slightly wider and you can use a lot lighter touch. After years of playing the fender the light touch gets some getting use to.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
I can't rate this after only having the guitar for a month or so. However, it does have a life time warranty and the finish is beautiful. Still I won't provide a numerical opinion here.

Customer Support : 10
Customer support is great and prospect support is great. I decided I wanted a better guitar (Fender sounds great but hard to play and my fingers were sore after 15 minutes - yes it has been professionally setup) and began my guitar research in January of 2006.

By Spring 2006 Zager guitars were on my radar as were Taylor, Martin, Foggy Bottom, Breedlove, Seagull, and Takamine. I could go to my local music stores and touch and play all of these guitars except the Zager. These were very nice guitars ranging $600 - $2700.

That???s when I started harassing the good people at Zager guitars. Without exaggeration I probably sent between 80 - 100 e-mails to Dennis Zager Junior. Without telling me to get lost he answered my every e-mail (promptly), no matter how dumb the question. He replied with his personal answer to my questions and with links to testimonials, magazine reviews, and videos. By February of 2007 I knew I would buy a Zager guitar. However, I didn???t know which one to get, or if I would buy a used one off e-bay, or a discounted guitar from Zager Guitar directly.

Dennis Jr. recommended the ZAD-80 acoustic because of my preference for deeper and bassier sound. He told me that the ZAD-80 acoustic dreadnought model (no cutaway, 3 piece rosewood back, cedar solid top) would be the deepest, bassiest, boomiest sound Zager could provide. So I was decided on the ZAD-80. However, this is one of the pricier Zagers so I was on the look out for a discounted minor damaged Zager. I found one and the very day I was to place my order it sold. I e-mailed Dennis Jr. and asked him if he could scuff up a new one. He said that he had a ZAD-80 his dad had used in a video and offered that to me at a very reasonable price. I also asked if he had a damaged case and he said he had an ugly molded case that was broken and he would through it in for free.

Two days later I had my new ZAD-80 guitar. The case. This was the ugly case. The only reason I asked for the case was for extra shipping protection. I planned on throwing the case away once it arrived. What I found a shinny black molded case that looked like new inside and out. I looked all over for the damage that made this an ugly case. I finally found a 2-inch crack at the very top of the neck area. I have decided to keep this case that had a humidity gage inside. The case was damaged, but ugly it was not. I still keep my guitar in it when not in use.

Now take this services and add the lowering of the action while they picked up shipping both ways was amazing. As I said before Zager is the gold standard!

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for 30 years, and I own a Fender Acoustic, Dean Exotiglass acoustic, and a Dean ML electric. I asked every question imaginable before buying this guitar. If lost or stolen I would replace it.

I love the beauty, believe me you will not find this kind of beauty for under $3K and probably not with a 3 piece rosewood back.

What I don't like are the strings that come with it. I replace with Martin MSP4000. A big improvement. I also don't like that guitars have to be played in seasoned to get that really deep deep sound. I wait though. It is par for the course.

Last thought. When researching Zager a few posters said the guitar had laminate materials on the back and sides. Laminate is plywood with a veneer. Like countertops made of chipboard and a simulated wood laminate. This is not a laminate guitar so don???t be fooled by those insane comments. You can look in the sound hole and compare the wood grain from the inside to the outside. The top, back, and sides are all wood!!!! Not laminate!!

I play bluegrass music, so I was interested in trying out a few of the Zager guitars. The ZAD-80 is the third Zager guitar that I now own. The ZAD-80 loudness and mellow/rich tones from bass through treble is outstanding and it rivals my 18-year old Martin D16A.

I did not purchase this instrument for its looks, I purchased it for the cedar and rosewood sound characteristics. The sound from this guitar is awesome!

Zager EZ-Play Modified
The Denny Zager factory set-up creates low action that does not sacrifice sound projection. It is simple to fret, there is no string buzz, and my hands do not tire after playing long periods. Alternate picking techniques are a breeze with this set-up of extra-light gauge strings and the supplied thin gauge picks.

Finish is flawless, tuning pegs work well, the nut and saddle are set perfectly in position.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
The guitar does not come with strap buttons installed; however, Dennis Zager, Jr., mailed free of charge, several sets of strap buttons, which I will have professionally installed on all my Zager guitars.

Dennis Zager, Jr. responds courteously to any question or comments; usually within hours.
I love the ZAD-80 so much, that I just placed an order for my fourth Zager guitar, the ZAD-80CE!

As a hobby, I am playing bluegrass guitar for more than 20 years. If one of my Zager guitars were stolen, I would immediately replace it with a duplicate Zager guitar model. I feel the playability and sound characteristics of the ZAD-80 guitar rivals my 1989 Martin D16A. If you are in the market for a top-quality instrument at reasonable price, then I believe you should try these Zager guitars.

This guitar just booms out the sound @ lows, mids and highs. Crisp highs, Mellow, but powerful lows and the mids are just where they ought to be. I played a Martin HD28 for 25 years and this guitar sounds every bit as good.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This may be the Zagers' strongest area. The lowest action I've ever experienced in 49 years of playing and absolutely no rattling; even using extra light strings. The look is classic "high end" dread with rosewood fretboard and bridge, abalone inlays at the bindings and rosette and a beautiful, flawless gloss finish. The back is 3 piece rosewood ala the Martin D35. The easiest playing guitar I've ever played. The Zager "string science" isn't just a slogan, it's something you and see and feel.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
Unfortunately I've only been playing this guitar a short time, so that making a making a pronouncement about it's durability and reliability would be inappropriate. Although I've only owned this guitar for less than a month, I've played it for hours each day since it arrived. I wouldn't hesitate to play this instrument in any setting.

Customer Support : 10
Lifetime warranty. Before I bought I called many times to ask questions....They make a lot of claims that are hard to believe at first glance. A customer service person always answered the phone, no holding or waiting. They answered every question willingly or showed me how to get the answer. Sometimes you have to e-mail Denny Jr. with the more technical matters, but I never waited more than 1 hour before I got a return e-mail with a full, complete answer to the question(s). I bought a "flawed" and discounted guitar, but I have yet been able to find the flaw and I have looked really hard. I called and joked about not being able to find the flaw and Denny wrote back saying that sometimes they oversell some of the guitars and when that happens they just send a new undamaged one. I think that's what happen to mine.

Overall Rating : 10
This is the note I wrote to Zager Guitars after receiving the guitar and playing it for a while:

Let me just start by saying that I'm a skeptic by nature. My story goes something like this: two years ago I sold my 25 year old Martin HD28 that I had purchased new in 1980, but had been playing only about twice a week recently. I had started a new project and needed money to purchase photographic equipment. I convinced myself that I really didn't play that much anymore and I could replace the guitar with a less expensive model. BAD IDEA, but I made myself believe that it was okay; for two painful years. I found Zager Guitars while I was searching ebay for a replacement. I listened to the videos, which sounded really good. And the testimonials! It all sounded too good to be true for the price. I e-mailed several questions and never waited more than an hour for a complete and helpful reply from Denny Zager Jr. I called a several times and, again, was treated like family. What a pleasure to be able to talk to a live person and be treated so well by staff. I couldn't believe the prices and the stated quality of the guitars. Well, I know about shills and shell games and never fall for them, but their policy of free shipping both ways seemed to reduce the risk to just a few minutes of inconvenience. I now have my ZAD 80 and I'm going to sound just like everyone else who has written in to say what a fantastic guitar they create. I owned and played a Martin HD28 for 25 years and my ZAD 80 is as good in sound (both highs, mids and lows) as the Martin ever was. Now about playability....this is the most amazingly easy guitar I have ever played; everywhere on the neck. The day it arrived I began playing and didn't put it down for two hours. I was enthralled! As I said before, the sound was astounding, AND I had no pain and none the next morning when I began playing again. I've been enjoying the guitar for two weeks couldn't give it a higher recommendation.

No electronics.

The harmonic structure and tonal complexity of this guitar is amazing. There's very nice balance between the bell-like ringing of the strings and the warm resonance of the fine tone-woods that were used. Fat trebles and gratifying bass even with extra light strings. Plenty of volume whether flat-picking or playing fingerstyle. Good projection and uniform volume across all the registers of the fingerboard.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Top marks for setup. The action is very close (much like a quality electric guitar). Frets are silky smooth. No buzz anywhere on the fretboard. Very good intonation. Fit and finish are near perfect. The finish seems very durable and is extremely high gloss. The abalone inlay and body binding are precision-fit and beautiful. The only discernable flaw anywhere on the guitar is a nearly imperceptible variation in wood grain on one side of the bookmatched cedar top.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I am not a luthier, but I believe this guitar to be well-made. Bracing and ribbon lining inside the body are well-sanded and very neatly glued. Body and bridge routing are precise. Looks like plenty of attention to detail.

Denny offers a lifetime warranty on his instruments. I have had no problems with my guitar. In advance of my purchase, I communicated with the Zagers both by phone and by email. They were exceedingly friendly and helpful. They were also prompt to assist with a problem after the sale. I ordered my ZAD-80 with a Martin case, but they shipped it with a Zager case (which is very nice, incidentally).
I spoke with Dennis and he apologized profusely. He offered to immediately ship the Martin case to me and have the Zager case returned at his expense. I tried to tell him that I was fine with the Zager case and not to worry. Never-the-less, three days later I received a care package with strings, capo, picks, and an electronic tuner. That is customer service. That's integrity.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing guitar (mostly for my own enjoyment) for over 30 years. I still have an old Takamine 12 string guitar that I purchased in the 70's. I previously owned an Ovation Custom Elite deep bowl - (another sweet-playing guitar). I also have a Fender Sting-signature Precision bass and a Washburn 8-string bass. The Zager ZAD-80 is just such a great guitar. It has all the projection and resonance that my Ovation had - and it's easier to play. I was hoping to find a guitar with good intonation and great sound quality at a modest cost. The folks at Zager and their ZAD-80 have far surpassed all my expectations. I'd buy another Zager guitar in a heartbeat.

I have not had any problems with this guitar, but I have contacted the company several times during the past 2 years for other reasons (mostly by email). They are always friendly and very responsive, usually getting back to me in less than an hour. I phoned once, and got an immediate pick-up from Dennis Zager (Denny Zager's son). It is really quite amazing. This is my second Zager, the first being a ZAD-50CE that I have played practically every day for 2 years with no problems. The warranty info from Zager's website: "We are the ONLY guitar company that offers a 100% money back guarantee. If you are not happy with your new guitar, we will pick it up and issue a full refund including ALL shipping and handling fees both ways. This is why we have been in business for 37 years."

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing a couple of years. I also own a ZAD-50CE. The 50 is nice, but the ZAD80 completely outshines it, hence the greater expense. I wasn't sure when I bought the first one that I would "stick with it" so I was a little cautious. I have never regretted my purchase, and after 2 years I love playing more than ever. Now my abiliity is accelerating daily and it is exciting. I expect to get every bit as much joy out of the ZAD80.

I wanted a guitar with a richer tone and I shopped around for awhile. I looked at $1,500+ Martins, Takamini, Ovation and others. None compared favorably to the Zager. This may be hard to believe, but it is true. I finally found a used Tacoma Koa for about 2g's with a tone that stood up to the Zager. I almost bought it in fact, but after pondering for a time (I don't rush into things) I decided to try the cedar-topped ZAD-80. After all, it does have a 100% guarantee, shipping included. In retrospect, I think I made an excellent choice. The Zager sounds and looks every bit as good for considerably less money.

This is the Acoustic model dreadnought. It has solid rosewood sides and back with a cedar top. It has a full gloss finish that is remarkable.

Sound : 10
This has deep sustained base with very bright treble. I play many styles on it. I love the low end sound. I mainly play contemporary Worship music, some country and folk. Sounds better than my Taylor.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This guitar was set up great. The action is extremely easy to play. There are no flaws that I have found.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Time will tell how long the life of this guitar will be, I can't see why It wouldn't last a lifetime.

I've been playing for 25 years. I own several guitars including a Guild Electric, Taylor 414CE Acoustic Electric. I just wanted something to take out camping that wasn't too expensive.. This guitar beats my Taylor in sound and playability. If it was stolen I'd definitly buy it again. It was a gift to me.

Solid Cedar Top, Laminated rosewood back and sides, Drednought. They are made in Indonesia. Mine was made in 2005. This info. comes from Denny Sr. himself.

Sound : 8
The sound is very rich. Not as good as my D-35, but better than my Guild D-55. And both of those where close to 10 x's the price I paid for the ZAD-80.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Fit and finish were way better than I expected at this price point.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
Haven't had it long but it seems better quality than my Guild, it was getting worked on within three weeks of buying it new.

Customer Support : 5
Lifetime warranty. My only problem with the Co. is that they really don't give enough info. on where the Guitars are made and what woods they use. Alot of folks think these are solid wood and are made in the U.S.A. And they aren't. Solid tops, but not the backs and sides. It took three e-mails to finally get the truth. They kept telling me "We get them the same place Martin gets their Sigmas". Denny Sr. finally told me, "Indonesia".

Overall Rating : 7
I got mine used and for only $200.00, it was like new. They have recently raised their prices and I'm not sure the new ones are worth the $900.00 bucks it'll cost with a case. But the have a 100% return policy, so get ya one and try it out. If you don't like it send it back. It's as simple as that.

Transparent gloss finish, EZ-Play "String Science" system,
, full size dreadnought, solid cedar top, Grover tuning gears, abalone inlay, rosewood fret-board, bridge, back, and sides

Sound : 9
Incredible sound. Rich, warm, and clear. My wife plays mostly acoustic rock, and the guitar sounds like a million bucks. It may not be the absolute best sounding guitar out there, but it's very darn close to the high end units that sell for 3 or 4, or more, times the price. And certainly wildly better than anything else one could even begin to expect in the price range.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Incredibly well set up, with the EZ-Play system, which allows you to play far longer than virtually any other instrument.

Well built, well matched, well finished. The rosewood back and sides are gorgeous. We had one that had a slight cosmetic issue in the finish, which Zager replaced immediately, at no cost to us, including shipping both ways. The second instrument is flawless.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
Have only had it a couple of weeks, but it seems very well built. Since they offer a lifetime guarantee, on top of the apparent quality, I have not doubt this instrument will last.

Customer Support : 10
I wish this category went to 11!

This instrument has a lifetime warranty, and a 30 day money-back guarantee. That's believing in your product.

On top of that, their customer service is mind blowing. I emailed them on Christmas morning, informing them of the cosmetic issue on the first guitar. I had an answer in less that two hours, and the new instrument shipped the next day. Dennis Jr. is *incredibly* helpful and pleasant to deal with. I've very rarely had the pleasure of dealing with a company that shows this kind of commitment and customer service.

Overall Rating : 10
My wife is the guitarist, she's played for a few years, but hasn't played as much as she could, due to not having an EZ-Play. She's absolutely thrilled with this instrument, due to the sound, beauty, and how very easy it is to play. I have a damaged left hand, and even I can pluck out a few things with it.

As a woodworker (thus the damaged hand), I admire the quality of the wood and construction of the instrument. It is simply gorgeous!

I will be buying a 3/4 size Zager in the next few months for one of our sons, and recommend this company to anyone who will listen.

This instrument would be a deal at twice the price, and for what you pay, it is an incredible buy.

My music style is easy listening folk, some Spanish guitar. This guitar has a superior rich and full sound. The kind of sounds and variet the guitar can make is only limited to the player's ability! I like the feel and looks of the guitar-- there is nothing to dislike.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This guitar was lovingly set up in person by Denny Zager who inspects every guitar he sells. There are no flaws; the action is superb, nothing is wrong with this guitar.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Of course, this guitar will withstand live playing. I have no doubt that it will last forever, and I can depend on the finish to last forever-- it will stand up just fine in a gig without a backup.

Customer Support : 10
There is a lifetime warranty on all Zager guitars-- I feel as if I know Denny Zager personally-- and his staff-- that's how smooth my buying transaction went-- the communication was excellent.

I've been playing off and on since the 60's-- plan to jump right back in again. If stolen, I would replace it with the exact same model. I compared it with a similar Martin-- chose this one because of the EZ-Play feature. (I'm a little bit older than I was in the '60s)

Features : 10
This guitar has a high gloss finish. To all those guys who think it has laminate wood, It doesn't. Please get your facts straight before putting misinformation here. It is a solid body rosewood guitar.

Sound : 10
This guitar has outstanding sound. Very loud, very long sustain. It is all affected by how fresh the strings are. You will want to continue using phosphor bronze extra light strings on it but I use Martin marquis as they seem to be the best and last the longest. D'Addarios seem to crap out early.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Very good action, intonation is perfect, gold grover tuners' Very nice. I had a small scratch by the pick guard but not a problem.

This guitar has solid Rosewood back and sides (not laminate as has been reported by a few "I think the back and sides are laminate types". I wouldn't have bought it if it were and no this is not a samick made in the orient. Read the web site and it will tell you all you want to know. The guitar is made in Lincoln Nebraska.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I use this guitar at open mics and haven't had a problem. I added as strap button for the front as it doesn't have one. Cost me $7. So far it is dependable and reliable.

Customer Support : 10
Customer service is nothing short of outstanding. I originally had a Zad 50 with a problem and they paid shipping both ways and I upgraded to the Zad 80.

By the way did I mention there is a lifetime warranty on this guitar. Generally it's no questions asked.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing a couple years and also own a Martin D-15 custom which has rosewood back and sides and spruce top. I prefer the Zager. There is something about the sound I just love. The Martin has pretty low action too.

The sound is amazing. Just keep fresh strings on it. I change mine every 2 weeks. If your're the type to change your strings once a year this guitar isn't for you. If you want the best sound available check it out. I have compared it to many high dollar guitars and found most wanting in comparison. You can't go wrong with this guitar.

This model has rosewood back and sides, with solid cedar top and

most beautiful instrument I have ever seen!!

Sound : 10
My zad80 has a sound a player always dreaned of. Great volume and
sustain, with a rich mellow tone which literally sparkles from bass
to treble. Outstanding !!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I know when a guitar is set up properly and this one is on the mark!
Correct relief on the neck, nut set with .018 nut height at first fret, .105 at the 12th fret. Intonation is very good. The frets are
all set perfectly. There is not one single flaw in workmanship nor
finish which I can detect.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
Needless ti sayy, I have not owned this instrument ling enough to say
how long it will last. But it appears solodly built. Zager must have
confidence in it or they would not give a lifetime guarantee with free shipping both ways, or your money back. Try beating that anywhere!!

Customer Support : 10
This company is helpful beyond belief. I chiped the saddle while changing strings and Zager had me ship it back for repair free including shipping both ways. I had it back in five working days. And
they did it all with a smile. Even sent me a new set of strings and
a handful of picks.. ONLY AT ZAGER GUITARS!!!!

Overall Rating : No Opinion
I have been playing for at least 45 yrs. and have owned several guitars including Gibsons, Seaguls and several others.I love everything about this guitar. I have compared it to guitars costing $ 3,ooo and none can beat it overall, Only one high end Martin could
equal it all things considered. If I ever buy another guitar, it would just be for the sake of variety, not quality.
I have one complaint, I wish it had a strap button at the neck. I will be verry disappointed if my evaluation does not get published. I will be watching !!!!!

This guitar is as beautiful as any I've seen at 5-6 times the price. The quality of workmanship is exquisite; the finish is flawless; the neck width, spacing of the strings and re-worked nut, bridge and frets make it extremely easy to play.

Sound : 10
The guitar is acustic but not electric. It has the pure and mellow tone of a custom guitar many times more expensive. There is no buzz.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The guitar arrived via UPS. It was well packaged andarrived in tune! I have found no flaws whatsoever in the finish, the pegs, the quality of wood and matching of veneers. Again, this guitar has the quality of a guitar one would expect to be far more expensive!

Reliability/Durability : 10
yes to all of the above- without reservation!

Customer Support : 10
It's a new guitar with a 100% money back guarantee, including shiping. Customer service was very responsive to my questions before I ordered the guitar and it was shipped the day I ordered it. Service so far couldn't be better!

I own a Martin acustic/electric and have been looking at others in the price range of $2000-$3000. The ZAD-80 is of the same-or better- quality as the expensive Martins. For me, the Zager action is better. My only problem with my new Zager is that it's almost too beautiful to touch!! I'd buy another on (and probably will) in a heartbeat!

I play "folk baroque" style (music by John Renbourn and Steven Grossman) and before ordering I was concerned about fingerboard width, thinking that it will be narrow for fingerpicking. However, I soon realized that after some practice, the neck on ZAD-80 is just fine and that I can play techinically demanding riffs with ease.

The sound is crisp, balanced, and intonation is perfect.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I am not a luthier, but this model seems to be manufactured according to high standards. Inlays and finish are beautiful; action is low, but there is no buzzing and barre cords are easy to play.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
I will use this guitar for home studio recordings exclusively. At this point I cannot comment on how long it will last. However, if the sound and finish do not deteriorate with time, ZAD-80 will be like a bottle of good vine - will get better with age (and I would like to grow old with this instrument).

Better than Dell's (few years ago :). Dennis alomost instantly replied to my e-mails and gave me excellent advices before I made my decision. I was torn between the ZAD-80CEOM and the ZAD-80CE. Both are electric and acoustic but the OM is slightly smaller. Both had a marvelous sound when I played them acoustically (without electric). The tone is warm and deep.

I use it with a variety of amps, mostly in a church, and the sound is clear as a bell.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The guitar came in spotless condition - it clearly was tuned before being shipped, and needed little effort on my part. I checked it carefully and found nothing, not even the slightest problems.

The action is easier than any steel-string guitar I have even owned.

Reliability/Durability : 10
It looks like a museum piece. This is a very high quality guitar.

Customer Support : 10
Since I did wanted to try both the ZAD-80CE and the ZAD-80 CEOM, I called Zager and asked them how I could do that, since this was an Internet purchase (in other words, I could not try each one at a store).

They made it simple - they sent me both! They gave me a prepaid return label and asked me to send back whichever one I did not want to keep.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing guitar, on and off, for about 50 years. I tried other guitars in stores, including Martins, and the Zager sound beat them all.

I also own a 12-string Alvarez, a 6 string Gretsch and a classical guitar.

I only wish Zager would install a strap pin on the guitar, but having that done locally is a small price to pay for such a fine instrument.

My advice: Do not have any concern buying from Zager over the Internet. They are first class.

Action, Fit, & Finish : No Opinion
The action is absolutely outstanding. This is the easiest to play guitar I have handled in over 50 years! Some bar cords have been difficult for me but not on this guitar. Some grace-note reaches have been hard but not on this one. Hammering on strings produces a beautiful and accurate ring with just a light touch. (no electronics in the original purchased guitar, I added those later) The top is beautiful, in fact the whole instrument looks beautiful, with the abalone inlay on the neck and on the top. No flaws at all.

When it first arrived I was tentative about it, because it didn't 'sound' like my well aged wood guitar (that had been stolen). I have emailed the manufacturer several times a week with pesky questions. The Zager family have been very patient with me, very forthright, very thorough in their responses. The most important thing to me was they were willing to completely refund my money and pay to receive the guitar back if I didn't like it even after playing it for several months. I wanted a sound pick up system installed but they don't do that at their shop. They were up front with me on those things and even gave me detailed help on how to locate and select someone locally who could do those modifications correctly. They even recommended the best system to install and provided me with data to support their recommendation. I installed a Fishman Elipse Blend (dual pickup type).

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for 50 years. I own a mandolin, a clasical guitar, a bango, some drums, and a bag of electronic equipment amplifier etc.

The Zager website provided some testimonials about these guitars by very satisfied customers. I was suspicious (I am always suspicious-- other companies 'invent' their satisfied customer statements). But when I asked them about my suspicions the were very patient with me, even giving me contact information to verify the veracity. The were willing to totally refund my purchase and return ship the instrument. That convinced me I had nothing to lose.

I tried the instrument. At first, because the sound was of 'new wood' not aged wood like my former guitar I was uncomfortable. As I played it every day the instrument began to age and tune in right before my ears. I can see that in some time this will be much better sounding than my former (40 year aged Aria Rosewood/cedar) instrument. This now sounds at least as good, and is immensly easier to play than my old guitar. I was shopping Martin dreads at the same time and this sounds as good and plays easier than the Martins. Yes, I know some will be suspicious of that statement, I was. But it is TRUE. You must try this instrument if you are shopping for a dreadnought. It is the biggest 'bang for your buck.' It should cost a thousand dollars more than it does for the quality you get.

I bought the guitar brand new in January, 2006. It is an acoustic, Rosewood body and fretboard, cedar top, gold Grover tuners, nice mother of pearl inlay, thin neck (which is easier to get your hand around), dreadnought body style. It came with a nice molded case. There is one minor flaw in the wood on the front of the guitar. You can only see it if you turn the guitar at a certain angle.

Sound : 9
The guitar is made to use extra light guage strings so I was concerned that the sound might not be loud enough, but it is plenty loud and the tone is very sweet. Both bass and treble come across very well. It is a mellow sound, consistent with its cedar face--a very nice sounding instrument.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I bought this guitar for the action and it is absolutely everything it was advertised to be. It is the best action I have ever encountered on an acoustic guitar! The action is perfect at any fret, and requires so little pressure that the guitar stays in tune a very long time. It was actually in tune when it arrived from the factory. I am giving this guitar's action a 10, but only because there is not a higher rating.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Since the guitar is new, I cannot say much about its durability but certainly the hardware (gold Grover tuners), the workmanship and the finish are all first class and should hold up for a long time. The finish is clearly several coats deep.

Customer Support : 10
Customer support is outstanding! They guarantee their instruments and will replace it instantly if you are not happy with the one that arrives. They clearly believe in producing happy customers. These people are out to prove something.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for 35 years, mostly on a beautiful Martin D-25 K2 (that means its entirely Koa wood). I haven't touched my Martin since getting the Zager. It is the easiest guitar to play I have ever touched. I can play much longer, the guitar stays in tune, and I am able to handle fingerings that I struggled with in the past. If something happened to the guitar, I would buy another tomorrow. I am already trying to figure how I can justify buying another one to keep at my office. The price for this guitar was absurdly inexpensive for the quality of the instrument.

For manufacturing info, see Zager's web site.
<a href=http://www.zagerguitars.com>Zager Web Site</a>
The ZAD-80 has a solid cedar top, with rosewood sides and back. Thi sis an acoustic dreadnaught, so no electronics are available or needed. The finish is high-gloss, and it is beautiful. No imperfections found on my guitar. Tuners are gold-plated, enclosed Grovers. Neck is made from African Mahogany, and fretboard is Indian Rosewood. Frets are hand filed and are perfect. Action is very low, and no buzzing has been encountered after 2 weeks of heavy play. Accessories included extra set of strings, t-shirt, and a couple of picks.

Sound : 9
I play mostly bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, and artists like James Taylor, Jim Croce, and John Denver. The Zager suits this style of play perfectly. Flatpickers who think that Martin is the be-all, end-all should really try a Zager. Very rich, mellow sound on the ZAD-80, but the higher notes are very bright in their tone.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Absolutely no complaints here ... everything is perfect. The 'EZ-Play' claim is no bunk ... it is for real.

I play only for my own enjoyment and the occasional festival/workshop ... not really qualified to make a judgment over the long haul.

My Zager Aad-80 was made in the USA in 2005. It is a 21 fret guitar, with solid cedar top and rosewood back and sides. It is an acoustic, dreadnought, with Grover tuners.

Sound : 8
It has a very smooth yet bright sound, which I like very much. I may have to use a bit higher gage string than the extra lights it came with. To get a bit more bass.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
This is the reason I chose this particular guitar, it has a custom set action which is quite low, with no added buzzing. There were no visible flaws in this guitar

Rosewood sides and cedar top. In-lays on front and back. Gold plated tuners. My wife says it looks better than her vintage Martin. I agree.

Also bought the hard case.

Sound : 10
The guitar was a gift for my wife, who thought it sounded a lot like her Martin D-28.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
My wife didn't like the way her vintage Martin hurt her fingers when she played, but she says her arms wore out before her fingers with the Zager.

This was the reason I bought the guitar.

My wife noticed two small indentations the size of a pencil tip on the front of the guitar (under the strings). She said you can only see them if you look at an angle. She added that she expected to add numerous small wear and tear marks herself in the coming years, so it didn't bother her a bit.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
Looks solid so far.

Customer Support : 10
I emailed a question at 9pm on a Saturday, got a response by midnight. I ordered the guitar on the following Monday, and it was delivered in three days.

Included a free t-shirt and a set of Martin strings on delivery.

Overall Rating : 10
I started looking at Martin guitars to find a new guitar for my wife, who worried that her older Martin was too fragile to take on vacation.

When I asked her what she didn't like about the Martin, her only response was that it hurt her fingers. So I did some research on Google and found Zager. It sounded like a good company, small and focused. I read a lot of the reviews on Harmony Central, and the consensus was positive about the Zager products and service.

After I got a response to an email at midnight on a Saturday, I knew the customer service reputation was well earned, so I decided to order the guitar.

Since my wife is happy, I am happy.

The Zad-80 Has a cedar top with rosewood back and sides. Grover tuners in gold plate. Rosewood fretboard with hand filed frets. The neck is thin with 20 frets. Box says made in Indonesia. Gloss finish with abolone trim.

Sound : No Opinion
Guitar has a beautiful sound that has a mellow tone, due to the cedar top. Would compare it with any Martin I have played.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The feel and fit of this guitar is beautiful. The string setup that Zager does makes this one of the easiest playing guitars around. The finish brings out the beauty of the rosewood and cedar top. Have read some reviews saying they are not made in the USA. Nether is a Stratovarous violin, but I hear they play pretty well. Good craftsmanship can come from places other then Pa.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Have only had this for a short time but with the Zager life time guarantee you can't go wrong.

Customer Support : 10
Have never delt with people this good. My E-Mails were answered so fast I figure someone lives by his computer. Talked to them on the phone and found them friendly and helpful. Can't say enough about how good they are to deal with.

I have been playing on and off for close to 40 years. Had not played for the last few years but got the bug again when I pull my Les Paul Custom out of the closet. Had played allot of acoustic's over the years and thought I'd give one of these a try after a friend turned me on to them. No regrets! Would buy another if stolen. The only thing I did was change the strings for Elixir extra lights. Now I woulden't trade it for anything.

All the features of this guitar are available on zagerguitar.com , If your looking at this review you already know that. All the features on this guitar are great. Im a college student and was looking for a good acoustic around 600-700$. I couldnt be more pleased with this guitar. It has everything I want and it looks great.

Sound : No Opinion
The sound of this guitar is amazing. When i first recieved this guitar at college i didnt have a tuner available so i was tuning by ear. Pretty hard when you live in a dorm and there is always noise. Anyway i never thought the sound was that great UNTIL I BOUGHT A TUNER.. and when i got this thing tuned perfectly.. i was floored by the sound quality.. i broght this thing to guitar center and compared it with other taylors and martins.. it sounded amazing.. why pay 3000$ for guitar when you can spend 600$ and not have to worry about little nicks and dents

Action, Fit, & Finish : No Opinion
The action on the guitar is great. Its definatley the lowest possible action you can have without buzzing. I put some elixir strings on this thing with tuning a half step down.. and i noticed slight slight buzzing.. but nothing bad. I usually keep the guitar tuned normal, and buzzing isnt a problem there. The neck is definatley one of the most comfortable necks ive used. I was in guitar center playing 2000$+ guitars that had necks that were uncomfortable compared to the zager.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
I dont see this guitar ever having any problems. Its just an amazing guitar for the price. Sure there are some spots near the joints where too much glue was used, which you woudlnt find in a 3000$ taylor.. but jeez.. this guitar costs 600$ and it sounds JUST LIKE THE TAYLOR IF NOT BETTER.. this guitar sounds/feels/and looks great.. if you buy it you wont be dissappointed.

Customer Support : No Opinion
This is probably the best thing about this guitar. If you have a question you can call or email Zager and talk to Denny himself!! the man behind the guitar. No other company offered the support of zager. I have emailed denny zager and had replies within 20 min.. never more than an hour. ive even emailed the guy at 3am and gotten replies by 7am the next day. amazing. denny zager stands behind his products and will do whatever it takes to make u happy, which isnt hard when he is selling guitars of this quality.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
bottom line. These acoustic guitars are easier to play than 90% of the acoustic guitars on the market. They look great and sound better. are they perfectly constructed.. no, but the flaws in the construction have nothing to do with the sound of the instrument, and overall it looks completely amazing.. the only flaw i found was an overuse of glue at the neck joint.. when you pick this guitar up it has a solid very well built feel.. and the high gloss finish just shines... when i first brought this guitar home and showed it to my friend they complimented me on how nice it looked.. and how nice it played.. you will not find a nicer guitar for the price that zager offers... this is a professional musicians guitar..and the price is a steal. overall i would recommend this guitar to EVERYONE

2005

Just purchased the ZAD80 a few weeks ago. Nice Cedar top with, I think laminated, Rosewood Sides and Back. With Grover tuners. Also has very nice inlays around the body and the rosette. Has all the key features I was looking for.

Sound : 10
the sound is great! Better than I expected. I try to play Folk and Bluegrass and this guitar sounds good with or without using a pick. As I mentioned the sound is very full both in the high and low ranges. I was surprised how well the sound is at the higher frets.( 12 and up. ) very bright and clear.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
This guitar came out of the box ready to play. There were no flaws. The finish is excellent.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I just play at home but I would play this guitar anywhere. As far as I can see it should last a very long time in all aspects.

Customer Support : 10
Outstanding. Every question I asked was answered very quickly. I asked what to use to keep the finish as nice as it is. Not only did Denny Jr. give a quick answer but also sent a small bottle of polish to try out for FREE!!!( now I keep humming that "year 2525" song):) And they do stand behind the %100 refund policy.

Overall Rating : 10
I read a lot of reviews and did a lot of research on different guitars before I decided to buy this one. I went to a few local stores and tried out a Martin, Taylor, Gibson. Actualy I tried two different D28 martins. The first one had a bow in the neck and buzzed a lot the second one had a crack from the bridge to the end of the body that had been repaired. Even with a $400.00 discount the price was $1600.00. I compared it to the ZAD80 and the Martin was harder to fret and the ZAGER sounded better. I'm thinking now that I need a Electric Acoustic,,, It will be a ZAGER. I thought that if I wanted something that sounds good I would have to spend $2000.00 or more. Not so.

Overall Rating is Excellent!

I just purchased the guitar of a lifetime! It's a Zager ZAD-80 acoustic. Solid cedar top, mahogany back and sides. Gold Grover tuners. Dreadnought body. Scalloped bracing. Incredibly graceful neck.

If I were to change anything about it, I think my "elitist" side would opt for solid mahogany, and I believe (though I'm not positive) that the ZAD-80 is laminated. But it certainly doesn't affect the sound or appearance of the guitar.

Sound : 10
Let me tell you, this is one *sweet* guitar...and I have a lot to compare to. I recently purchased a Martin HD-28VS, and I am seriously considering taking it back to the shop in favor of this ZAD-80.

This baby sings like an angel. And she sings with an ease and grace I only *wish* my Martins had. I can finally achieve complicated chord structures I've struggled with for years. I prefer to play fingerstyle, and this guitar gives me the opportunity to focus on great new patterns instead of worrying about dead-sounding chords due to the high action of my guitar. The ZAD-80's sound is bright and full. You don't have a category rating of "Totally Awesome, I Am Blown Away", but I am!!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Zager's ZAD-80 is a gorgeous work of art with its abalone inlay, impressive fit, and stunning finish. In addition to being a musician, I'm a graphic artist with a bent toward perfectionist, so I have a tendency to pick things apart looking for the minutest flaws. Trust me, I found nothing to complain about in this guitar.

One thing I particularly look at is what kind of wood is on the back of my guitar. No one ever sees it, so the luthier has the opportunity to use "ugly" wood back there. I was pleased and surprised to see a really pretty pattern in the grain on the back of my ZAD-80.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I'm not a performer, but I think the ZAD-80 will handle anything I want to throw at it. Its hardware is solid, the finish is flawless and deep, everything about it is top-notch. And if I were a performer who needed a backup guitar, you can be sure it would be another ZAD-80!

Customer Support : 10
As I was making my choice, I had the opportunity to deal with several people at Zager. My questions, either by telephone or e-mail, were promptly and courteously answered. Even when I changed my mind in the 11th hour about which model guitar I wanted, they were wonderfully friendly and helpful. And, I asked the impossible. I ordered my guitar the weekend before Christmas as a gift for myself and asked that it be delivered to me before the holidays. I did NOT pay for special handling or shipping. Zager jumped right on my order and my guitar arrived on the east coast in 3 days. And don't forget, I'm talking about THE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS!

Customer service and support? This company truly knows the meaning and carries it out. I highly recommend them.

Overall Rating : 10
I would put the Zager ZAD-80 guitar up against any I own...and I own a Yairi and 4 Martins: one of which is a custom model and one is a pre-war model. I love those guitars, but my hands are quite sensitive and I cannot play them for very long at the time. I do not have that problem with my ZAD-80. Because it's so easy to play, I can work on complicated melodies without giving up due to the frustration of painful fingers!

If my ZAD-80 were stolen or lost, right after I took a stick to whomever stole it, I'd buy another. That same day.

I am in no way connected to the folks at Zager Guitar, other than being a delighted customer. I highly recommend them and their guitars to anyone.

I hate to burst your bubble Robert, but Sigma and Zager guitars are not made by C.F.Martin. They are both manufactured in Indonesia by Samick. I owned a Sigma DM-1ST, made in Korea by Samick and it was a good guitar well built, had good tone and easy to play, but it was a Martin copy, imported by C.F.Martin. Martin also imported from Japan, Shenandoah models back in the 70's. The early Sigma guitars were also made in Japan.

I hear only good things about Zager guitars and I wish you good will. Enjoy your new guitar. It will get better the more you play it.

Features : 10
This guitar is a Zager ZAD-80 and to my understanding it is a Martin guitar made especially for the Zager Company, and modified by Denny Zager to his precise specifications. It has a solid cedar top and rosewood back and sides, and rosewood fretboard. It is a dreadnought acoustic, no electronics on this model. The bridge is also rosewood. They are Grover sealed tuners. Does not come with case but you can buy one of a few types at a reasonable price when you order. I did receive a free unadvertised gift of a very nice stand, and each one comes with strings on and an extra set of martin strings. And a couple of picks.

Sound : 10
I am just a novice and just chord and sing for my own pleasure. I owned a Cortley back in the seventies and relly loved its' sound, and have often searched the internet for one. That is how I came across Zagers' website and thought I would take a chance and am very glad I did. Rich and full describe well the sound right out of the box. Very satisfied and have no dislikes. No "tinnyness", and plenty of volume.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The guitar is set up absolutly perfectly from the start. Denny Zager tunes each one, takes the time to stretch the strings, tune again and a third time. It arrived to me in perfect tune and ready to play. The action is all it is claimed to be on his website. I haven't played in probably 20 years, and set down and played my Zager for two hours and never once thought about my fingers. Absolutley no pain. Easiest fretting guitar I have ever seen. To understand more about what he does to this I highly recommend going to his website. Now the finish looks fantastic to me, very nice, but this is one area where he says he doesn't go all out, because it would drive up the price and not change the sound or action. I am sure the grains don't match up perfectly, etc. But what do you want? Sound and ease of playing or a picture to hang on the wall?

Reliability/Durability : 9
Guitar comes with a lifetime guarantee, I have absolutley no worry about reliability. He says on his website that if the guitar doesn't last a lifetime, it wasn't a good guitar.

Customer Support : 10
I am always tempted to say for each catagory here, "Now this is where Zager guitars really shine". Like customer support here. But I thought the very same thing about the reliability section, the action section, the sound section, etc. But let me tell you about how unbelievably impressed I am with customer support. And, in a way it really all comes down to this doesn't it? Email a question, answer guaranteed back within 24 hours, I have never waited more than 12. I really think Denny Zager would rather go broke than to put his name on a product and not stand by it. If you are not happy with your guitar, you send it back and he refunds every penny, including the shipping both ways. Absolutly risk free investment. I will just put it like this, I don't know the man and never will, but the way he is running his company has created a loyalty in me to him as I feel he is to me as a customer, and to any other customer.

Overall Rating : 10
I haven't played in a long time and it is just a hobby, I am very happy with this guitar and would definatly want to replace it if lost with one just like it. They said to be critical in this review, nothing is perfect, and that glowing superficial review won't be published. Well I hope that's not the case here. I am sure if I was a professional musician I could say, well it lacked this and this product is better or whatever. For the money, You won't get nothing better than this.

As far as features go on this type of instrument, obviously you look for quality and craftsmanship first and foremost. This guitar definately reflects the attention to detail that Dennis and Denny pride themselves on. The beautiful inlay work, and the overall construction guitar far surpass anything that I've seen even at double the price.

Sound : 10
Here's what you look for most in an acoustic right? As beautiful as this guitar is, the tone is equally impressive. It has a very warm sound, with nice resonance, something that you would expect from a well aged Martin. A perfect studio guitar.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The guitar arrived in tune, with a perfect setup, right out of the case! Easy playability is one of the key elements which Zager incorporates in their instruments, and it definately shows here. This reduces the sore hand factor dramatically, which in turn makes you want to play a lot more:)

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've only had the guitar for a short time, but in checking this guitar with so many others that I've owned, the quality alone makes me pretty comfortable with the fact that this guitar will stand the test of time admirably, both live and in the studio.

Customer Support : 10
Have you ever dealt with music companies that never take/return calls, or rarely if ever answer emails? This is the absolute opposite case here. In the short time since I purchased this, Dennis has gladly answered any and all questions, and offered up ideas along the way. Excellent guy to deal with, which I think reflects on the company as whole. Sorry HC for puttin' up so many 10's but Zager earned it!

Overall Rating : 10
Overall, every element is covered explicitely well with Zager Guitars. I think I've covered most of the bases already. Overall...one excellent experience all around!

Hand made by Mr. Zager and Mr. Zager Jr. I bought the easy play model and a case. The item arrived in beautiful condition and the guitar looks so good I am amazed at the quality. When I went to the music store to look for some sheet music I looked at the other guitars, nothing in the price range we paid for this one looked as sleek and nice. The sound is really good, a nice mellow sound. In order to upgrade I'd have to pay twice as much to get a better quality and sound. This is solid cedar top and the rest of the guitar is solid rosewood. Apparently, according to the local music shops, it is pretty rare to see so much rosewood in one guitar. The last string or two are a bit higher than I like, but I have yet to find a perfect set of strings. I expect this guitar to last quite a while. The guitar doesnt stay in tune for days at a time, but I'm not sure any of them do and this is so easy to tune that it hardly matters. I think serious players tune their guitar every time anyway.

Sound : 8
We enjoy old time country music (Mother Maybelle Carter, Jimmy Rodgers, Hank Williams, and Jimmy Dickens style) This guitar has a much richer sound than any of the guitars we have seen at the same price range. There are richer sounding guitars but they cost at least twice as much as this one did.
Overall, it has become a lot more pleasurable to practice playing songs I like with this guitar. I was frustrated with my Alvarez because nothing sounded right even when I played it as the music sheets had it written. Now I look forward to practicing in the evenings.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The guitar arrived within 2 business days and was in such perfect condition that I was amazed. I expected to have to do a lot of adjusting to it but, except for some minor tuning, it was ready to play. I never took much stock in the looks of a guitar before, but this one almost makes me feel like a star. The coloration is so rich and natural that I am proud to show it off.

Reliability/Durability : 8
Having only had the guitar for 2 weeks it is hard to say what the reliability is, but by appearance I expect this guitar to last me the rest of my life, or at least another 15 to 20 years (I am 63). I don't do gigs, I play for my enjoyment and for my family. But if I did play professionally I would not hesitate to play this as a solo instrument, although I equally look forward to dueting to a keyboard with my sister.

Customer Support : 9
The staff at Zager spent almost an hour with me to ensure I received the right guitar for my needs (large hands with little flexibility) and desires (low mellow sound) with the proper strings to match. This is my 5th guitar in 2 years and the only one I am satisfied with. I have had Alvarez, Taylor, Briarwood and an unnamed brand previously. The only other brand I would consider now wood be a Martin.

Overall Rating : 9
I believe I asked every question imaginable before buying and the staff were very patient, kind and helpful to me. If anything ever happened to this one I would replace with an identical or Martin only. Have been toying with a guitar since childhood but got serious about learning about 3 years ago.

Acoustic dreadnought, Solid Cedar Top, Rosewood back-(3 piece) and sides with Rosewood bridge. Gloss finish. Scalloped X-bracing. Modified EZ-Play neck, saddle and bridge, with hand carved nut.

Sound : 10
Wonderful warm tone and resonance, you expect from an aged Rosewood Martin. Fingersyle is well suited to this guitar.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The special care with which this guitar is modified makes it the easiest guitar I have ever played. The action (very low) and string science that makes this guitar sound so good and play so easily is my favorite feature.

Reliability/Durability : 8
This guitar is made very well and stands apart from other Martins I have had. It seems durable to me, although I do not play professionally.

Customer Support : 10
This company is a family business that treats you like family. They are great to work with from purchasing, instruction, and answering any question promptly. They offer a lifetime warranty.

I am 52, and have been playing off and on since High School. I also own a Classical guitar and a Taylor, which I love. This particular guitar from Zager though is unique. The beautiful tone, and the lowest action, makes it hard to put down. My fingers do not get sore anymore, and I pretty much attribute this to this guitars' features.

In College, I had a prized Martin stolen out of my dorm. Many years later, I have replaced it with a Zager Modified EZ-Play, and if this was stolen, I would replace it with another ZAD80. I'm beyond impressed! I researched guitars, and played friends guitars, before taking the plunge with Zager - and I am so glad I did.

Made in 2005 in Indonesia (most guitars in this price range are made abroad), modified by Zager in Nebraska. It has a solid cedar top with laminated rosewood sides and back. No electronics. Gold plated Grover tuners. Thin neck of rosewood. The only thing missing from comparable models (and not all in my research) is that the saddle and saddle are corian, not bone.

It's a standard dreadnought with the features you'd expect. This is a really beautiful looking guitar.

I used this site to compare to other more well known guitars:
http://www.acousticguitar.com/issues/ag131/feature131.html

I thought the ZAD 80 compared VERY well in features and price with these models.

Sound : 9
I tried the 50CE first and found the sound too "brilliant" for my taste. It started sounding almost tinny to my ear. The sound on the 80 is a really nice, warm sound. This is what I was hoping for when I traded up from the 50ce. Very similar to some of the higher end Martins and Taylors I've tried, not quite as resonant or rich but pretty darn close. I want to try slightly higher gauge strings as I think that will make it a little more resonant and probably louder.

An experienced guitarist friend said the sound is very well balanced.

If you like a rich, warm sound you'll like this guitar.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The action is very low, just as the web site explains. The extra light strings make it play almost like an electric. This is also one of the reasons I went with Zager: you get a good sounding guitar that is already set up well so you don't have to take it in and incur extra expenses.

The 50CE I got first had buzzing issues. They worked with me to try to get rid of them, but I could never fully to my satisfaction. The 80 has NO buzz (well, my instructor can make it buzz but he's pretty heavy handed), it feels really solid everywhere on the fingerboard. Not trying to discredit the 50, I may have gotten a lemon.

Can't find any flaws with the setup, I think it's excellent.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
It has a high gloss finish that should hopefully stand up well. I'm an amateur who doesn't gig (my biggest concern is that my two young sons will knock it over :)). The construction seems very solid, but I can't really speak to this topic as I've had it less than a week.

Customer Support : 10
Zager is very good to deal with. They answer questions via email very quickly, and the phone support dude is great (that's right, it's a guy that picks up not a voicemail system).

I got the 50CE. Played for about 3 days. Went on vacation for 10 days. Came back and played for another 2 weeks. Tried to fix the buzz and became increasingly unhappy with the brilliant sound. Talked to Zager about it. They offered to send me the 80 so I could try it. No charge to me for shipping either way. I'm sending the 50ce back today and applying the cost to the 80. In my opinion this is EXCELLENT customer service.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing for about a year. Had an entry level guitar before this one. So my biggest hurdle to overcome in this purchasing experience is my own lack of knowledge. I've done a lot of research over the past month, including playing a lot of high end guitars, and have become much more competent when it comes to judging guitars.

The ZAD 80 is not a high end guitar and no one should expect it to play like one. It's laminate back and sides, corian bridge and saddle can't compete with the materials in a Martin D35 for example (which lists for $2849 on the Martin web site). There are a lot of reviews out there that say it is just like one of these more expensive guitars and you all need to use your common sense when deciding if this can really be the case.

Having said that, the ZAD 80 competes VERY well with other guitars in the $500-$1000 price range. You get a lot of value when you purchase this guitar. And you'd be supporting an excellent independent family owned business by purchasing here.

The main reason I'm writing this review is to provide some useful information to folks looking at Zager, as I have learned a lot during my purchase experience (info I would have really liked to have).

If you are looking at Zager, don't worry about purchasing online as this is not an issue. I recommend the ZAD 80 over the 50ce as the sound is better (at least to my taste) and you get something that has higher quality materials for a small increase in price.

Hi Folks,

I'd like to let you know that I received my new ZAD-80 precisely on time. It is BEAUTIFUL !! The fit and finish is excellent. It more than met my expectations ..... and most importantly the mellow tone of this cedar topped model is just what I wanted.

Now it's only up to me to make full use of Denny's on-line lessons to learn how to make good use of it.

Many Thanks

I have recently purchased a Zager ZAD-80 acoustic.
Solid Cedar w/Rosewood sides/back/fret board
Dreadnought style, thin neck w/Grover Tuners
I also purchased the molded case.

Sound : 10
The sound is very rich. The information I read about the guitar before i purchased it was that it had a quality equal to instruments in the $2500 range and I agree with that assessment.

I play country, rock and blues and find this guitar produces a sound
complimentary to those styles.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Guitar was shipped in tune.
Zager guitars are set up with a very low action which makes chords extremely easy to play.
The finish of the instrument was flawless.
It's appearance is quite nice, especially the cedar top - it has an
aged quality to it that makes it appear 30 yrs old.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
I have not owned it long enough to have a solid opinion here.
The quality seems very good over the entire instrument.

Customer Support : 9
Warrantee is lifetime.
Purchase experience was very good.
Have not had any cause to deal with company on warrantee or repair issues.

I've been playing for 5 yrs. I own a Guild and an Alvarez.
I took a chance purchasing online and not having played it, but
the instrument came as advertized.
If it were stolen I would replace it with the same model.I also plan
to purchase another this year.
The sound and the playability are the best things about it. I haven't
found anything I dislike about it. (I compare to the two I own and it
is far superior)
I compared it (not directly) to Taylor and Martin guitars. I was
originally looking to get a Martin or Taylor, but the cost was
a stumbling block. The Zager has the same quality sound and it is
much easier to play than the others I tested.

I bought an '05 Zager ZAD-80 recently. This is a dreadnought size guitar with rosewood sides, back, fretboard and bridge and solid cedar top, with a high-gloss finish. The neck is thin with gold sealed Grover tuners. The guitar came tuned with Martin strings and a surprise teeshirt.

Sound : 10
The guitar produces plenty of volume in a rich, full tone. Not as bright as a spruce top. I compared this instrument to a $2000 Martin D-28. The Zager is much more suited to my taste, warm, mellow--not bright and annoyingly sharp like the Martin. The tone of the Zager is appealing and addictive.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
It is here that the Zager excells. Just minutes out of the case it was apparent that the $2000 Martin was no match for the Zager. Denny Zager's "String Science" has been much maligned, but I'm here to tell you folks, It's for real. The playability of this guitar is phenomenal. The Martin D-28 was hard to fret above the 7th or 8th fret, but not so with the Zager. This beauty seems to get better the higher up the neck you go.

Reliability/Durability : 10
A solid, well-made guitar. Beautiful yet functional and durable.

Customer Support : 10
The folks at Zager Guitars are great to do business with, especially Dennis Jr. Answered every e-mail and every question. And you simply can't do better than a 100% money-back guarantee, as well as a lifetime warranty.

The Zager ZAD-80 is a full sized dreadnaught guitar with 20 thin hand filed frets, scalloped X-bracing, hand carved custom nut and hand carved custom saddle, sealed grover tuning gears, a solid cedar top, rosewood back and sides, rosewood neck and bridge, full abalone inlay and abalone inlay rosette. According to the Zager web site all of their guitars are made by the Martin company. Mine seems to have been made in Indonesia. The nut and saddle of each guitar is worked on to improve string spacing for those of us with larger fingers and the action lowered to make playing the guitar easier.

Sound : 9
I use both pick and finger picking techniques. My playing style is a blend of blue grass, jazz, and folk rock. The ZAD-80 suits my playing style very well. Admittedly the depth of sound isn't as deep and full as a Gibson J-45 rosewood (which I love) but the ZAD-80 doesn't cost $1,800.00 either! It is a beautiful and very well made guitar. I could not find any flaws in it. I have owned a maple Gibson J-200, a Gibson Rosewood J-200, I own a maple Gibson J-100, I have owned three Takamines, a Guild D-40 and have played Breedloves, Larivee's, Taylors and Martin's. They are all wonderful instruments- but you pay a premium price for them! The Zager ZAD-80 is a quality instrument with a good sound befitting its price ($595.00).

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The action is wonderful! It is low and very easy to play. I have spent hundreds of dollars having several of my guitars professionally worked on to scallop the braces for greater resonance and the action lowered for ease of play. The Zager comes perfectly set up and easy to play right out of the box; and the braces are scalloped. Those two features alone are worth anywhere from $100-$200.00 in luthier fees.

Reliability/Durability : 10
The more I play my Zager the more I expect it to mature in sound. No, it won't sound quite like the J-45 Rosewood, but it costs one third the price and from what I can see it will last just as long.

Customer Support : 10
I have talked to the Zager company by phone and have sent them e-mail. They were very helpful and were genuinely concerned that I be happy with their product. Though I cannot speak for everyone my e-mails were answered within several hours.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing for almost 35 years. No, I am no Leo Kottke, John Renbourn, or any other great guitarist, but I play well enough to know, and have played enough quality guitars to know the Zager is quality guitar worth the price.

I ordered a Zager solid cedar top ZAD-80 guitar as well as a guitar hard case direct from their website. It is a fantastic guitar made right here in the USA. When it arrived it was ready to go, with very minor adjustments to tuning. It came with sealed grover tuning gears, as well as full abalone inlay. The finish is a beautiful gloss, and the pictures on the website do not do this guitar enough justice. It comes with a rosewood bridge and fret boards. However the best feature of this guitar is a 100% money back guarantee. If you don't like it they'll take it back and refund you the shipping costs both ways as well. Here is a list of the features of the guitar direct from their website.

- Abalone inlay rosette
- Tortoise shell pick guard
- Gloss finish
- Hand carved custom nut

The sound is fantastic. I've been playing for the past 7 years on an Ibanez basic solid top. It is a nice full sound that really opens up the more you start to play it.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
When I first got it, I was amazed how great it was set up. Virtually no tuning was needed. Everything looked and felt great.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I'll play this guitar at least as long as my old ibanez, if not longer. It's built better, and sounds better. The only reason I'd stop playing this one, would be if I ordered the ZAD-80ce, or 50ce.

Customer Support : 10
I don't think i've ever dealt with a better group of people selling a product. They really take pride, and each guitar is hand signed by the maker. I sent them an email, and i got a reply back with in an hour. On top of that with my guitar they sent me an extra set of strings, as well as a free t-shirt.

Overall Rating : 10
Like I said I've been playing for 7 years now. I was very skeptical about investing in a guitar with out playing it first. However I figured with what the ez play system boasts, and the 100% satisfaction guarantee i figured i'd give it a try and if i didn't like it I could send it back. I first became interested in getting a new guitar when I found mine being constantly out of tune, and there was nothing i could do to fix it, and rather than take it into the shop and get it repaired, I should just get a very good replacement for as much as I play. I started searching for a guitars going to guitar center, and other music stores playing all the guitars there. Then I was reading reviews about this EZ play system, and it interested me because he boasts it's great for players with smaller hands because they can't get the arch they need on the longer stretches without muting some notes. So I ordered it and was impressed not only with how easy it played, but also the sound. It sounded just as nice as guitars more than double its price that I tried out. It's worth a try, and if you don't like it send it back. You have really have nothing to lose.

You have to check out the Zager E-Z play full- size dreadnought guitars! I'll tell you a little about the ZAD 80 solid cedar top. It has rosewood sides and back, rosewood bridge and fret board, abalone inlay on the fret board, around the sound hole and edges, tortosie shell pick guard, grover gold tuners, scalloped X -bracing, is stung with Martin Strings and has a lifetime warranty. I was a bit skeptical about ordering a guitar online, but you know, they have a 100 % money-back guarantee so I thought, why not? I'll give them a try. I am so glad I did because I have been out there playing every guitar that is made and there is no comparison. I am extremely picky. This is the guitar I am going to play all of the time. The others are going back into their cases! I really can't believe that I got this fine of an instrument at such a GREAT price. It is worth so much more. YOu have to check out the website, Zagerguitar.com.

I like all kinds of music. The Zager is going to handle rock, blues, country, jazz and anything else that gets thrown at it. The solid cedar top lends itself to a soft, mellow, very sweet sound. I like the clarity and fullness that flows from it.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Because I have educated myself on how guitars are made and because I am so picky, I can tell you that this is a very well made guitar. I examined it from all angles under all lighting conditions. Denny Zager, of Zager and Evans, "The Year 2525" fame, personally checks out each guitar. This is not some assembly-line made fiasco. This is the real deal. The E-Z play feature that Denny came up with is also the real deal. I really didn't think there was a way to get over the sore finger bite , but I can play three times longer with this guitar. Isn't that what we all want?

Reliability/Durability : 10
Gold sealed grover tuning gears, Martin Strings, an awesome gloss finish, solid cedar top, and top of the line rosewood all contribute to this awesome instrument. Try it! What have you got to lose? Denny promises a quality instrument. This is not a gimmick. He delivers what he promises. He just wants to share his love of music with us by delivering a quality instrument. He also offers really classy, easy to understand, inexpensive online lessons. He has proven to me that he is an honest man; so refreshing in today's business world.

Customer Support : 10
Remember when you could go to a gas station and three guys would run to your car to change the oil, fill the gas and wash the windows? (Yeah, for you young guys and gals, that really happened)! Well Denny and his family are running their business like they were run in the good old days. They are personal, always remember to call or e-mail you back, and they usually respond to my questions or comments in less than 24 hours. I even got extra little surprises sent along with my order. I have never bothered to review anything before but am so pleased with Denny and his company that I just had to share. Check out the website : Zagerguitar.com and browse around or join the live chat with the family and ask anything you want to know. They are really great.

Overall Rating : 10
I wish I would have found Denny Zager, his unique easy-to-understand lessons, his quality guitars, and great customer service years ago. Thanks for reading this!

ZAD 80 was made 04-2005 and Professionally set up with Zager EZ Play string science personally by Denny Zager Sr. in Lincoln, NE.
21 Fret dreadnought, solid cedar top (straight and very tight grain), rosewood back and sides, rosewood bridge and fretboard, mahagony neck and head, high gloss natural finish, gold plated Grover tuners, narrow neck, Martin extra light 10-47 strings (extra set included)
Abalone inlay around entire edge of soundboard, soundhole and fretboard, tortoise shell pickgaurd.

This guitar fits me to the T. I play bluegrass and fingerstyle. It has a deep bassy rich full sound. Tone and resonation are outstanding and this guitar is brand new. I have played it side by side with a couple of older martins in the 1600.00 range and the Zager definitely sound as good if not better to me. But the best part is that it plays so much easier than any other guitar I have played because the set up done by Mr. Zager is top notch. Intonation is right on the money.
Oh I forgot to mention the price, are you ready for this? 595.00 and no sales tax, and it comes with a LIFETIME full money back refund, no quetions asked! I ask you, how can you not try one of these? I was looking for a good quality guitar at a reasonable price and I found it in the Zager 80. I love it and their service is second to none.

I was skeptical about purchasing a guitar over the internet, so I got the answers to all of my questions before I decided to go ahead with the purchase. I knew that if I was unhappy with the guitar, I was out nothing. I would simply send it back. I have been playing guitar for about 10 years.

I would like to add one final thing, I am not a devotee to anyone or anything as some may have you beleive. I know a good deal when I come across one. I am not sorry about owing this guitar. I only wish it had ten years of age on it! can't wait to hear it then.

This is my first serious guitar after attempting to teach myself to play on and off for decades on an old acoustic. Not only did the Zager pitch to try their EZ play system draw this small-handed player in, but their classes convinced me that they were a company I could trust.

When my guitar arrived it was so beautiful I was afraid to take it out of the case! I can't believe how much easier it is for me to navigate the neck, even using steel strings for the first time. The sound is so good, even my skeptical husband was impressed and started messing with my new baby!

Dennis Zager has responded promptly and helpfully to my every email, every question, and even helped guide me in my choice between the ZAD 50 and 80. He recommended I go for the best bang for the buck, trying to save me a few hundred dollars on my purchase. I went for the 80, for the look and deeper sound, and absolutely love my new guitar. The on-line classes are very easy to follow, and are an incredible bargain considering the cost of lessons. I hope to master the Zager method, and love that I can go at my own pace.

This guitar has a lovely rich sound. I hope to learn to play classical style in addition to my efforts to master chords & notes for rock and folk tunes. I write children's songs and want to be able to accompany them instrumentaly if I can ever switch chords fast enough! My new guitar should make this possible for me.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
My guitar arrived looking beautiful and nicely tuned. The EZ play system was just as promised...easy and exciting to play.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I haven't used it for very long, but I am kind of a quality snob and I have to say I am really happy with the look and feel of my new guitar. The finish is flawless as far as I can tell and the hardware looks very high quality.

Customer Support : 10
Incredible. I had mentioned that my pickguard looked a bit scratched despite its plastic wrapping, and they responded immediately with a new pickguard, a complimentary set of strings, and a surprise gift which I will keep to myself as I don't want them to end up doing this little extra for everyone or they'll go broke. Suffice it to say I have been very pleased and am spreading the word to all of my guitar playing friends.

I think I've answered some of this already, but yes, if it were to disappear I would go back to the Zager company. I can't believe I bought this online, but it was a great value for the rosewood/cedar combination. I didn't shop around too much, except for used guitars on ebay and at a Taylor sale at my local music store. The Taylor I played was going for about $1200, and the only thing that really wowed me about that one was the solid wood neck. It sounded really nice, but I have to say, I think my ZAD 80 sounds really rich.

suits perfect to my style (a mix of all)
it is not that noisy than sprucetops but that's just wonderful
sound goes from rich and full to bright depending how you are playing it - so there pretty much variety.
mainly the sound is more soft and mellow.
i tried hard but i could not find any dislikes!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10

The EZ-Play? modification process involves:

Lowering the strings closer to the fret board so you no longer have to press hard to form a chord.
Widening the stance of the strings so there is more space for your fingers, while keeping the neck shallow so its easy for small hands.
Modifying the saddle, bridge, neck and nut in harmony to amplify the tone and resonance.
The result is a guitar that is 50% easier to play with a sound that rivals guitars costing 5 times the price.

with this set-up - what should i tell you more - everybody must be happy

after checking many times i did not find any mistakes on it.

Reliability/Durability : 10

this guitar - i'm sure - will last and sound better with every year!

solid cedar top with abalone- I think it is real- not for sure-but doesn't matter because it looks good to me ,sides and 3-piece back are laminated-but some of the most beautiful wood I have seen on guitars -for more than this price, bound rosewood fingerboard, rosewood bridge, gold plated grover tuners-nice playing frets, extra set of strings-case costs extra-nice looking guitar

Sound : 10
this guitar has a nice sweet broken in sound with plenty of bass for my style of playing country or bluegrass, I like it because it is not harsh sounding-the strings that came on it were 0.10 to .047 gauge- I like the guitar with 0.11 to 0.52 gauge for flatpicking

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
the action on this guitar is what I have been looking for because I can play it and not get tired as I do on some of my more expensive guitars cause I hate to start having set-up work done on expensive guitars because sometimes they never sound as good as they did-the workmanship on this guitar is above the average for a guitar of this price

Reliability/Durability : 9
I will never treat this guitar bad so I can tell how it would hold up for some one else-but it is built solid as to me-good hardware, good finish-I would depend on it by the way it is built

Customer Support : 10
they have been nice to me in communication about the guitar- and I have no reason to believe they will not stand behind their guitars-the guitars have a lifetime warranty

Overall Rating : 10
I own several guitars-some are very high priced-I would not hesitate to compare this guitar with any I own for being a good buy -this guitar in the way Mr. Zager does his set-up on it-is what makes the guitar different from others you will buy in this price range-I do not believe you will find a better sounding or playing new guitar for the money you spend for this guitar-I would buy another one soon if this one ever was lost or stolen-because I would miss it's sound and the way it plays easy

I have been playing on & off for 30 years.
I have always wanted to learn to finger pick.
This guitar is perfect for that. I own 4 other guitars, including a very expensive Ovation I have owned for 20 years. It used to be my favorite. The value received for the price, I have not seen on any other guitar, and I have looked at alot of them.

I went to three different shops and played guitars ranging from the $900 to $2500 range. I must say that the sound of the Zager ZAD-80 is absolutely beautiful and without question will austound even the most loyal Gibson or Martin fans. The moment that I opened it up from being shipped it was perfectly tuned and ready to play. They even sent an extra set of strings!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The real beauty behind the Zager E-Z play guitar is that it's not only so "E-Z" to play but so much fun as well. The action of the guitar makes it possible for me to increase my playing time without fatigue by about 20 to 25 minutes. This will without doubt improve my overall playing skills very rapidly.
The finish of the guitar is truly stunning as well. How they can produce this much of a quality prodcut that delivers so much in performance, esthetics, playability is beyond me. Outstanding dollar value without question.

Reliability/Durability : 10
THe ZAD-80 is made with very high qulity components like Grover tuners, etc.
As for reliability, I haven't purchased a guitar in 20 years, I plan on this being with me to the end!

This is really were Zager Guitar shines.
In todays business world most companies talk-the-talk but don't always walk-the-walk.
I spent about 3 days e-mailing Dennis, Jr. back and forth with questions. He would generally respond to each of my questions within 10 minutes.
I had one tiny little issue when I received the guitar after being shipped and literally within 5 minutes of me e-mailing them with the problem, it was handled. Done, finished, end of story.
It truly is an honor doing business with people who take such pride in their company and their product. For me, this was a purchase about a passion and through my experience with them the Zager Guitar Company is passionate about what they do.

Overall Rating : 10
If you are thinking of buying a new guitar, do yourself the favor and look into a Zager product before you buy. It's very doubtful that you'll look much further.

Zager ZAD 80 this is a new model in the Zager "String Science"line up.The ZAD 80 is a solid cedar top full size acoustic dreadnaught. It features a 3 peice Rosewood back and sides and Rosewood fretboard with a gloss finish.Abalone inlay Rosette surrounds the soundhole.Full abalone/pearloid inlay laid by hand around all edges of the ZAD 80 face and fretboard make for a beautiful acoustic guitar also with a tortoise shell pickgaurd. The ZAD 80 features scalloped X bracing and is imported by Denny Zager.Like all Zager acoustics it is modified by hand by Mr.Zager with his "String Science".This includes a hand carved custom nut that sets the strings lower and slightly wider apart with no string fall off.The saddle is hand carved so the strings are set lower to the soundhole. The frets are hand filed to reduce string bite and finger fatigue. These are options you will not find on acoustics in this price range and makes the ZAD 80 very easy to play and a lot more fun to play.

Sound : 10
The solid cedar top ZAD 80 has a mellow, darker sound than the solid spruce top ZAD 50.All Zager acoustics are strung with Martin extra light strings .10-.47 but when strung with Martin or Elixir custom lights .11-.52 they really reach there full potential of volume and sustain and you can make the change with no modifacations to the "String Science".I have also used light gauge strings with no set up problems. The ZAD 80 scores a knock out in the sound department with the cedar and rosewood combination.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
I'm not sugar coating anything about the ZAD 80 and try to find a flaw in this set up but I can't.I read of many new players who bring there guitar to someone for a set up because they are in need of some help with high actions and sore fingers. So they pay an extra $25 to $75 and still are not happy. This is all eliminated with the ZAD 80 the set up is pro style with a very light touch to the frets to form chords the "String Science" modifications help speed up play and takes the worry out of how hard to press the fretboard. The ZAD 80 is set up and tuned to bring perfect inotation.Every thing is refit by hand by Denny and flaws are weeded out.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I own both a ZAD 50 and ZAD 80 and I'm very proud of that.I once had a small collection of acoustics from some of the best guitar makers.I am very fussy about sound, fit, finish and set up if an acoustic has one flaw it will bug the heck out of me and I will sell it.The ZAD 50 and 80 right no are my only 2 acoustics in my house.

Customer Support : 10
This is where the ZAD 80 and Denny Zager shine.I have not come close to any one who has the customer support of Zager Guitars. When I read people saying they will not buy on line or with out seeing first that makes sense because you do not want to be stuck with something you don't like.Well the Zager's changed that because they will take back and refund total purchase price of your acoustic if you are not happy with it.The warranty is lifetime and judging from sales Denny and son Dennis are going to be around for a longtime. They are a small buisness so they really get to know there customers and take the time to answer all questions by email or phone.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing a long time and cooled off for a decade or two to raise a family now that I'm pretty much have a lot of time to my self I play more than ever.I'm very happy with the ZAD 80 for $545 it easily compares to a $1200 to $1500 acoustic with a better set up than many guitars in that price range out of the box.The same said for the ZAD 50 they make a good pair for any acoustic player. If you are a beginner start with a vist to Denny's web site and if your an older player like me why spend big bucks for an acoustic when you can get one of the best looking...sounding and best set up guitars for a price like this.
