Many bass players would shrink at the lack of features on the Alembic f1-x. Bass, middle, treble, plus a bright and a deep switch. The deep switch on mine remains on all the time, it adds a nice body. The bright switch can be great for slapping. The frequency center of the bright switch adds a glassy bite. Sometimes I turn the treble down all the way on my bass and turn on the bright switch. I have only owned 2 other amps; an Ampeg B2(most over used and overrated amp in history) and an Eden WT-300 Traveler. The Eden I bought recently for ease of travel reasons for small gigs. I like it.....but honestly the EQ is a bit much for me. Maybe It's because I have used the F1-x for 11 years...but no matter how much I twiddle the Eden's knobs...it never sounds nearly as good as the Alembic.I like the Eden's take on bass sound, and enjoy the amp....but the Alembic always sounds amazing.I use it in tandem with a QSC PLX2402, 2400 watt amp. The headroom probably doesn't hurt either.I bought it used in 1996 for 400$ at the advice of the guys at Bass Northwest. Not a lot of 17 year olds with that kind of tone. The features aren't a big deal to me on this amp.....because it sounds sooooo good. As long as more features didn't screw with the tone, they would be great. No parametric EQ though, please.

I have many basses (yay!).A '65 Fender Jazz, a '95 Fender Jazz 5 string, an '07 Japanese Fender P-bass, a fretless '78 Ibanez Roadster, a '96 NAMM model Warwick Corvette standard, and a '93 Modulus Quantum Sweetspot 5 string. All of them have active preamps and passive pickups, except the Ibanez, which has EMGs. It makes them all sound incredible. The only amp I have ever tried that I liked as well was a Glockenklang. At 2500$ for just a head ...no thanks.I can't say enough good things about the tone. If you play anything other than distorted metal and punk type stuff, this is your best choice....especially since you can find them used for 400-600$. I bought mine used...and 11 years later... it's still badass.

Reliability : 10
Never let me down, but most pre-amps are fairly reliable....it's usually the power section that has problems.

I got mine in 1996, hasn't left the rack since (except to change the tube).

The passive tone controls are not the most versatile setup. That's not really what this thing is about - if you want parametric EQ, adjustable compression and the such, you'll have to add it in the effects loop. The DEEP and BRIGHT switches do affect the signal very effectively and musically.

For my purposes, the crossover just sits there. I've tried bi-amping a few times and it's never worked well for me. With the right speakers & amps, maybe it could be cool, but whatever... If I were in charge, I'd seriously consider scrapping the crossover and adding some active EQ and/or compression. Something bass players would actually use! Who bi-amps anymore?

The front-panel DI, on the other hand, gets used all the time. Definitely keep that!

This box is ALL about tone. You can really feel it, live. A lot of manufacturers slap a tube or a simulator in their amp so they can claim they have the tone. This preamp ACTUALLY has it. The vibe I'm talking about is big and round, somewhat compressed with a super phat low end. Ultra musical! The DEEP switch is super "old school" and the BRIGHT switch adds some wicked treble slice. Good for slapping.

One thing this unit does NOT do well is boost mids. The "flat" setting has bass & treble knobs at 9 o'clock and the mid knob at 3 o'clock. Not much room left to dial in a "frown" curve. With the right bass and/or speaker, this won't be a problem but if the rest of the signal chain is also mid-shy, you might find yourself too easily buried. Adding a good quality parametric EQ is one solution - I switched to a less "neutral" speaker cab with good results.

Reliability : 10
The construction on this unit is really super - much better than any other piece of electronic gear I've ever owned. Simple wiring, high-quality components, easy access. Doesn't get any better than this.

I change tubes periodically and always travel with a spare (plus the allen wrench required to get in). I haven't ever had any trouble and don't ever expect to.

This unit really is built to last a lifetime. If and when internal components finally need replacing, it would be easy to do and very much worth doing.

I called them a couple of times with questions and got quick, meaningful answers.

This box doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles. It just delivers that golden tone that so many other manufacturers promise. It's not cheap but it's worth what it costs.
