Love the tone. I bought this amp a few years ago, on consignment at a second hand shop, for about 500cdn. After giving it a bit of armor all and cleaning the contacts I was amazed at the gem I had picked up. The sound was/is spectacular. Can't say I'm much of a fan of the distortion, pretty ugly.
Also, I'm a bif fan of the weight! Carrying this bass head from show to show is an absolute pleasure. When all is said and done you'll have herculean arms.

I play in various bands, punk and a few jazz (call me Mr. eclectic) and the tone can be matched to any. Personally, I believe it is one of the best sounding head's I've ever tried. One tip, pretend the distortion knob doesn't exist (you'll do yourself a world of good).
I play both electric and upright bass though it and it sounds wonderful!

Very dependable, I've had the bloody thing for 5 years now and I haven't had any problems. Its older than me and when I bought it, it looked like it had been sitting for 10 years or so and it sounded perfect when I tried it.

Frankly, this is not the catagory I love most about this amp. The built in distortion is next to useless, unless you are really looking for a specific, dirty sound. The equalizer is useful though, particularlly if you play in a variety of places and need to customize the sound.

The sound is just fantastic. Real, fat full tube sound and nice and clean (without the distortion).

I have played and gigged with this amp since 1983 and I love it. It has moved from Nebraska to Massachusetts to Arizona and back to Massachusetts and I have never had a singel problem with it. Just replace the tubes once in a blue moon and you are all set.

Never needed it and never had a problem getting tubes (unlike what I've heard about the 400s).

The only reason I would not buy another one is that I'm not playing the same kind of stuff I was when I bought it. I was 15 playing loud rock and roll and it was perfect. I have played outdoor gigs with it, no problem.
Now I'm playing a Fender Blues Junior because I'm actually playing fiddle with an Irish combo of all things! Hey, it's what happens sometimes as you approach 40! And frankly the thing IS a beast, it's really heavy. You are not going to want to tote this thing up stairs with any regularity, even with help.

Built in the 70's, this is a heavy, powerful, versatile beast of an amp. With your basic treble, middle, bass, and presence controls it also has a 5 band rotary EQ with + or - 5db at well chosen frequencies. The 8 ohm minimum speaker impedance is limiting but can be worked with. The distortion sucks but with the gain and master you can get some cool tube growl. I use it with a hi-fi bass (modulus) and a nasty rock bass (P-bass w/DiMarzio and pick) and I'm able to get anything I want from it.

OK, I just answered this in the previous section. It has one channel so you can't switch sounds quickly but with all the tone-shaping capability, you can get pretty much any sound you want except full-on distortion. The "distortion" knob delivers a crude grainy buzz that isn't as loud as normal - unusable. It definately is giving me everything I need playing rock, blues, funk, reggae. It would sound great playing jazz but it's way more than you need....

This amp is approximately 30 years old and is a tube amp so it needs occasional attention. I've been bringing it to gigs without backup for 5 months. I'm about to have the outputs replaced with kt88s as an upgrade.

I've been playing bass something like 35 years and I've owned many amps over the years. Some exotic and cool (Sound City 120 bought new in '75, '69 Marshall Major, Hiwatt DR201), some just loud (Acoustic 360, Sunn Coliseum, rack stuff). This amp is the most versatile in terms of tone shaping and just plain yummy for the tube factor. They are fairly rare and I'd been wanting one for years. For that reason, it might be hard to replace. It would be nice to be able to run it at 4 ohms through an SVT cabinet. But right now, I'm thrilled with it. I see no need to upgrade.

a 1977 all tube fender bass head, 2x 12ax7 preamp, 12at7 inverter, 6v6 (!!!!) driver and four 6550 power tubes. active and passive eq, master volume and a very bad distortion.

a loud and warm clean tube sound, and with the double eq, you can shape your sound very well. and with te preamp/pouwer amp settings are also overdriven sounds possible (nice tube growl). it's a big rock amp!

using it now for a few months, never had a problem with it. it has two very very heavy transformers in it (i think the head weights about 40kg....) maybe i'm gonna put some fans in it to cool it down a little. it's all point to point, so if any thing goes wrong its not a big problem to fix it

the only two bad things are that you only can use it on 8 Ohms or more, so you need special cables to use more than one cab (i use two in serie, making it 16 Ohm) and its heavy... very heavy.... but for the rest, it's all i need. i played with two guitarist with 5150, and i can keep up! what more do you want. it's the amp for me
