Mine's a 1971. The 2 channels are voiced differently, the bass channel is good for an old school warm, dark sound while the guitar channel is clean and clear, more "modern" plus having reverb and tremolo.

Sound Quality : 10
I use it for straight ahead rock, it would be great for any style. The "guitar" channel - the one with a 3 band EQ, reverb, and tremolo - has my favorite clean bass tone ever. Clean as any high powered solid state amp, but more "alive." This thing has unbelievable low end, I have a 5 string bass tuned to a low A and after the 400PS nothing else does it justice. It's not a great head for distortion, but then Fenders are famous for their clean tones. The bass channel has only a 2 band EQ, a stronger midrange tone that would be good for country, classic rock, etc.

Reliability : 10
Never had a problem. I took it to a tech (once I found one competent to work on it) and after all this time it needed nothing more than a cleaning.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Long forgotten amp, I'd expect no help from Fender on this one.

Overall Rating : 10
I've owned practically every tube bass head you could name, and this is one I wouldn't sell. They don't turn up too often, but when they do then tend to be cheap. Due to the unorthodox nature of the amp (see the other review, people are afraid of them, and huge heavy tube heads that don't say "Ampeg" on them aren't seen in music videos. It's an unusual amp and that needs to be taken into account before buying one, but it's the best bargain in tube bass amps, besides being the ultimate tube monster at any price.

this is a 1971 fender 400 ps all tube bass amp. this amp has 4 inputs, 2 bass and 2 guitar. it is versatile enough for any style, from jazz to metal. if you use a guitar input you can use reverb if you so choose. it has 12 tubes in the back and can produce 435 watts. it also has 3 outputs producing 135 watts each, so you need 3 cabs to get the full power of the 400 ps.

weather i use my 05 warwick corvette, my 06 fender jazz, or my 76 gibson ripper this amp sounds amazing. i mainly play a jazzy, funky, classic rocky kind of style and it is perfect for anything. although i've never turned the amp up past 7, i did use my bridge pickup only with the trebel all the way up and the volume on 5 (loud as f#%k) and it didn't produce any buzz. there is no distortion at all at loud volumes with my ampeg 4-10 and 1-15.

Reliability : 10
this amp has never let me down. it weighs about 100 pounds so its a pain lugging it around, but i bring it everywhere i go. all you have to do is replace the tubes every few years.

never had a problem

ive been playing bass now for more then half my existance on earth and i would not use another amp. ive owned various ampeg and warwick amps and this bad boy puts them to shame. if i somehow lost this amp i would try to find another of course. i couldn't have it any other way. i love everything about this amp.
