A single 18" Black widow in a ported cabinet. Rated at 350W. Bought new in 1984 and used with a 150Watt solid-state head (self-built)for my basses (Guild B301 and Ovation Magnum).

Ideally I would have liked to have owned the 1810 cab (2x10" and 1x18") but lack of funds restricted my choice.

Sound Quality : 10
HUGE sound with lots of 'throw'. Surprisingly tight, with a low-end kick that could crush bricks and more top end than you might expect from a single 18inch cone - in those days, the Black Widow speakers were years ahead of the competition.

Reliability : 10
Like everyone else says, it was built like a nuclear bunker. Though I rarely gigged it, it was in constant use for recording/rehearsals, travelled with me to every new flat/studio etc. and never let me down. Took everything I could throw at it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Didn't really have any direct contact with Peavey, so no comment.

In 1989 my house was burgled, and almost all of my musical equipment was taken - except one item - yup, you guessed: the 118D ...because it was TOO DAMN HEAVY TO STEAL! I sold it in 1990, because I needed the cash.

I've been playing for about 30 years, I guess, with a gap of a few years in the early 1990s (after the burglary cleaned me out and the ****ing insurance co failed to pay up). These days I play a Ric 4003 through an Ashdown rig made up of two 300W combos: a 2x10" and a 1x15". Love 'em.

Would I have a Peavey 118D again? Well no, but not because there as anything wrong with it. It would simply be impractical for the sort of small pub/club gigs I do nowadays. As part of a larger rig, though, perhaps combined with a 4x10 cab, it would still be a killer for anyone who wants to be heard in the next town!

Bought it used for $50 in 1998 from a guy who had it and a Peavey 4x12 cab that he wasn't using. (bought that one for $50 too.) It has that Black Widow sound and response -- but if I use anything less than 300 watts into, it just sounds muddy. $400watts and it sings -- well at least it growls nicely. Sometimes on a quick finger patter, it seems like it is lagging behind a bit as though it can't resond quickly enough. It IS a big 18" in a VERY solid cab. Weighs somewhere around 4 million pounds by the end of a gig.

Sound Quality : 9
EBO or J Bass and various heads have all been used with this head. I got the best response when I used it with a 4x10 cab also. Highs are not in the program for this cab, but then we are talking about a single 18" speaker. It CAN DO LOW B without a problem. Even using an octave down effect doesn't effect this cab.

Reliability : 10
It has got to be 15 years old or more and still is in great shape.

Who is Peavey?

Played bass since 1958. I'll buy any bass gear I can for peanuts like this cab was priced. I don't really need an 18", but I'm enjoying it.

This is an 8 ohm version of the 18 inch Peavey Black Widow Cabinet. I'm not sure of the wattage, but it handles 300 quite well without complaints. One 1/4 inch mono jack. Loses a point for the lack of casters. This thing is heavy as lead but I'll be adding some soon.

Sound Quality : 8
Because of the size of this speaker, low end is all that really comes through. It's capable of some highs but distorts quickly when the gain is past the halfway mark. The rumble is unbelievalbe though and is able to get you over the pesky kicking of your drummer.

Reliability : No Opinion
This cabinet is a tank. I bought it second hand and as far as i can tell, it doesn't break. I've thrown it around the back of my truck and hauled it into the loft of our singer's barn where I've left it for extended periods of time. Nothing can kill this thing. I used to play with the pre-amp way too high and could have done great damage to the speaker, but after correction, the sound is still perfect. This cabinet will never die.

I've never had to deal with customer support.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing this cab for over a year and it hasn't quit on me once. I've considered down-grading to a 15 but I don't think I could survive without that rumble. If it had a tweeter, it'd be a dream but I'll add 4 10s and we should be ok. This cab is unreal for anyone looking to blow the doors of their next gig.

This is a 4 ohms cabinet with an 18" Black Widow speaker. 800w peak 400w RMS.I wish it had a tweeter minus one point. I bought this cab with a peavey mark III head as well. I stole them both from the pawn shop for $300 total. Plus this thing is pretty heavy and the casters are louder than sin. But 1. I am an OFFENSIVE LINEMEN so lifting it is no problem for me and 2. If anyone tries to steal it they will have to carry it all around or else I will hear them from a good 200 yards.

Sound Quality : 10
This speaker helps me get sounds from extremely fat dub to fairly crisp slap. Great THUMP is always present. Even with my cheap DeArmond bass. I will be adding 4 10's shortly to clear up some of the high end but for anything other than high string solos this cab rocks.

Reliability : 10
I do use this cab without a backup. One really usefule feature about this cab is if you do manage to somehow blow the speaker you need not replace the magnet or voice coil just the cone (make replacements much cheaper). I have owned this cab for 3 years now and have never even heard a single crackle or anything. It is older than me but is built like a tank.

Customer Support : 10
Peavey is a very friendly company. I have had many questions for them about my head and my cab and possibly buying some new 4X10 cab of theirs. They have always responded within 24 hours. To top it off they offer manuals and schematics on their web site.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing for 7 years now and have never heard another cab give the THUMP that this one does. If you EG your head right it'll hit you in the chest like Mike Tyson. Or it will amazingly produce an entire harmonic version of Amazing Grace with no problems. If it were stolen I would laugh at the guy as he tried to load it in the back of his car. After he broke his back I would calmy walk over to him and hang him from a tree with barbed wire by his n**$. If the cab was busted I would definitely look for anoither one somewhere.
