The Peavey Max 160 is is a fairly simple amplifier. IT has the same preamp as the Max 450 I believe. 3 band control and one semiparametric in the mids. It only pushes 160 watts at 4 ohms at the max (pun intended). If you are looking for TONS of power, you wont find it here. IT is single channel with DDT protection (I guess it clips sin waves so your speaker doesn't burn). I have mine matched up to a Peavey 210 TVX 4ohm cabinet and they seem to work well together.

I play yamaha BB3000 basses (fretless). The setup I have resonates very well. I bought the Max head and cabinet on a whim. I have been playing GK and bagend for years bought I stopped at a local music store and decided to try out the 210 and was surprised on how good it sounded. I ordered the Max head on EBAY for around $200.
I am 40, and am starting to worry about hearing problems from 300 watts (the SPLs must be very high). My whole band is turning down so this seems to fit me fine. The DDT kicks in if you hit it hard, the sound difference is not noticable in a band setting, but if you are by yourself you notice the change in sound.

I bought it because it is peavey. My first amp was peavey, and nearly indestructable.

I sent a peavey speaker back 3 times to be rebasketed (black widow), It was not the speakers fault I had a crappy Fender BXR200, that pushed nasty sine waves through it all the time. Peavey was always gracious.

I invested in padded covers (because it looks so new). I plan on handing it down to my son wheb he can appreciate it (in 20 years)
