With my 4 string Jazz copy it does just what I wanted it to. Light weight amp to carry to the bar for jamming with acoustic guitars and maybe an electric giutar now and then. The amp gets loud enough before it runs out. The tone it good and tight with the pickups I have in my bass. A S-D stacked humbucker in the neck and a straight single coil jazz in the bridge. Both are passive. I can get the Thump of an upright for the country to the low growl for the new stuff.
Now with my Curbow 5 it is a different deal all together. The Curbow is an active pickup and a 5 string. This little amp does not have the range to reach the low B string on anything past the 5 frett. The amp was not really designed to get to 30Hz, not really any in this price range will handle an active 5 string very well.
All in all it is a very good little amp with plenty of sound that is VERY portable.

Been playing 4-5 years, played in several cover bands. Played in the US and in Europe (USAF).
I have two 4 string and one 5 string basses, a couple of guitars, amps from Marshall, Legion Sound, Peavey.
If this were stolen or lost, YES I would get another one. It does just what I need it for, small acoustic bar jams. It straps to the ***** bar of my Harley, bass gets slung over the shoulder in a gigbag.

Great. I thought it was good for it's size & now I've recorded with it & the engineer said it was great for its size I'm convinced.
I've also done small gigs with it & it's been great. I do mostly Jazzy stuff on electric & stand-up at low volumes. It can carry a Jazz tone just fine.

Peavey MicroBass III
Made in USA, 2003
20 Watts, 8" Blue marvel speaker, single input, volume control, 3 band eq low/mid/high, headphone jack, external speaker jack
Without the external speaker connector I would give this amp a feature rating of 4. It is very simplistic, nothing more.

This amp sounds far better than amps anywhere near its $130 price range. I've compared it against Crate, Behringer and Fender. This amp does not register low B on a 5 or 6 string bass well at all. However, drop D on my 4 string basses sound great, both passive jazz and active musicman. Use the external jack to connect a 10 or 12 to resolve the low B problem.
There isn't much control through the onboard 3 band eq, it really only refines what you get from your bass eq. Adjust the high to far and you'll get hiss. But overall the amp is very quiet.
Volume is incredible for its size and loud enough to fill the entire house. It only distorts if you push it too far, which seems easier to do with active pickups.

I've had it for three years and it still works great. I did have a few strange problems with it that I have never sent it back to Peavey to resolve. The power jack wiggles a little and if the amp is left plugged in for 3 or more days it begins to hum without it being turned on. I just keep it unplugged when not in use. Its still under warranty for another 2 years I guess I could just get it fixed but just haven't gotten around to it.

Year unkown. Standard black cab, couplke of knobs, 10" speaker. I am a beginner and hide it behind a chair in the living room so my wife won't get upset by a bigger unit. Single channel, no real effect, some know equalizer stuff, headphone jack. For a practice amp, this thing is just great.

I picked this up out of a pawn shop for $75 in like new condition. there were several other branks there in the same size, also used. I tries them all, and was hoinestly amazed at the clarity of the peavey. had i not done a comparison, i would have bought any of the others for about $40, but this thig sounded twice as good as the rest.
I would never try to gig with it, or evben do a practice with friends, but it sounds great on the hardwood floor at home.

My Peavey Microbass amp was made in 2000. This amp was intended to be a bed-room or room practice amp and nothing more. I have never tried using it in any kind of show situation obviously for its limited power. The amp pretty much suits my need though, it's got everything an amp of that kind should have. I use this amp in my bed room for regular practice and it has just enough volume and power to fill a room. It's got a a 3 band Eq. and headphone jack, it's all you need for the application.
Sound Quality
:

I use this amp with a variety of basses Fender p,J, Sting Ray 4 and 5. The sound of the amp is alright but you dont need to turn it up past 2 to get the right amount of volume needed to fill the room. Maybe it's just my amp in particular but when you turn it up past two it starts to overdrive which I found quite amusing. I tend to leave it no higher than 2 on the volume, trust me 2 will fill the room plenty and enable you to still jam along with cd's and what not if you want. Other than that it's just straight forward bass amplification nothing more or less for it's intended purpose.

I'd say you would be able to rely on this thing mine hasnt broken down or blown a speaker yet. I cant really imagine myself bringing it to a gig but if I did I'm sure it would work fine. I dont know how good it would sound though in that environment. If it's one thing Peavey have in their corner, that they dont make up for in sound, at least is solid construction.

I have been playing for nearly seven years now and I own two other amps including this one. The other two amps I own are a Peavey TKO 115 S and an Ampeg SVT Classic with 810E cab etc...I play in a generic rock and blues band at the momment but I am big into metal and have played in a few local metal bands. If it were lost or stolen I would probably buy it again, it's a great amp for the applicaton. An amp like that is what you would be using most of the time anyway. I actually use that amp the most out of all my amps, even the SVT!...Cause when you think about it the SVT is a band amp, it's meant to be turned up loud or at a decent enough volume which usually is way too loud for the rest of the house...I love the SVT sound at all levels but it's really meant to be played in band practice or live. But yeah I'd definately recomend the Peavey Microbass amp for anyone really, pros or beginners alike.

It has surprisingly a SEALED enclosure and is equipped with an 8" noname woofer.
It has no features except volume and basic tone controls.

I use it with my piezo miked double bass for small acoustic gigs and for home practice. It works excellently for this purpose, complementing the acoustic sound from the double bass.
I also use it with my 5-string electrics. It actually handles the B-string beautifully! I guess this is due to the sealed enclosure, which doesn't loose control below the resonance frequency! Smart move, Peavey, to abandon the vented enclosure!
It gets quite loud for practice and it distorts nicely. The compressor seems to work as intended.

I did disassemble the amp:
The noname 8" speaker element does not at all look trustworthy.
- The potentiometers are ONLY secured to the circuit board, NOT to the front panel. The knobs are so loose that they feel like some cheap toy. They also move very easily so you may change the setting inadvertently.
- The operational amplifiers are socket mounted, which is not reliable!
- The rest looks fine, a stable box, a nice circuit board, a heavy transformer.
I would never use this thing on a gig without backup.

Mine appears to be a late 80's to early 90's vintage (mostly black and silver with a little aqua on the amp face/old Peavey logo). Basic practice amp at its best: 1 input, 1 volume, 3-band EQ (passive), headphone jack and power switch with indicator. This one was built before the CD-input jacks became standard, so hard to fault Peavey for not including them. A couple of things do stand out, though: 1) long power cable (about 10' or so), and a "ported" or "slotted" cabinet that seems to help focus the lower frequencies a bit. Nice touches when compared to other small practice amps.
Sound Quality
:
8
Due to the "bass response port/slot" at the bottom front of the cabinet, this unit projects lower frequencies a little better than several of its competetors. That being said, this is definitely a practice amp...only! I found that major swings in the tone controls only had a minor effect on overall tone. As well, response drops considerably if you jump down to the B-string on a 5-string bass. The Microbass handles 4-string basses very nicely. The tone and volume are nothing to brag about, BUT they are perfectly acceptable for the size and wattage rating of this unit. Although I can only recommend it as a practice amp, I can say that it does a nice job when I plug in my acoustic bass. In my case, I push the mid- and low-EQ to 10 and drop the treble. This has allowed me to sit comfortably in the pocket at acoustical jams/shows where I had to compete with several instruments (sans drums). I used to use my Ampeg BA-112 (better tone and volume), but the Microbass does a good job at half the weight and bulk. You'd have a hard time finding better volume/tone at this wieght/price.

After owning over a dozen peavey amps and rack pieces (and another dozen speaker units), I'd damn near proclaim them indestructable. In this case, the amp has held up very nicely for a unit that's about 15 years old. The only issues I can find are a couple of scratchy pots. This is the only amp I carry to small, acoustical gigs.

Best in the business. These guys have answered (in great detail) several of my dumb questions (and a couple of headscratchers) over the last 8 years. Customer support is one of a handful of reasons that I buy Peavey equipment whenever possible. I also like the fact that you can find almost all of their literature (including obsolete models) on-line.

Doggone decent little amp for the price. No question that I'd replace in-kind if lost or stolen! Better tone and volume than most amps in this wattage class/price range). Nearly indestructable. AND, around here, Peaveys are a dime a dozen. Even if it does go south on me, I'll be able to find a replacement at a fair price.

This amp is basic in its features, but has everything you need: bass, mid, high eq, volume, headphone jack and speaker out. The amp is light and compact - you could bring it with you for any occasion. I'd use this in choir practices, jamming (without drums) and acoustic/piano accompaniment. Jamming with a guitar isn't any problem - you will be heard. Add in another guitar and drums and it becomes difficult to hear yourself. It is not suitable for gigs etc. Having said that when you crank it up you get a sound louder than you'd expect for an amp this size and wattage. A 'line out' jack would be a useful addition. My friend Aaron (owner of Peavey Special 112) and I (were recording once with the band and had to resort to mic-ing the amp up, and that's something we won't try again. The bass had to be DI'd (straight from bass to the mixer), so here a line out would be handy.
Sound Quality
:
7
The EQ offers a wide variety of bass sounds - from 'underwater' bass to a more Phil Lynnot style-twangy bass. The EQ is responsive; any small change will affect the sound alot. It offers a good sound for Thin Lizzy, U2, Blink-182 and the like. The tone is generally clean, and suitable for choir backing, solo/piano accompaniment etc. I'd imagine it wouldn't suit metal as well as it has a more clean, less biting tone. I play with a Fender Precision bass and have been playing for a little over a year now, and while I wasn't impressed with its appearance at first, it proved a great buy. It's not just a beginner's amp; if you're doing small jams, doing small gigs, practicing etc. it's very handy.

As I said, this amp isn't gigable. In all the time I had it, it worked fine. It has a sturdy build and there are no loose components, flimsy knobs etc. However once it was out of my care for a while and when it was returned wasn't in working order! Speaker problems! This could have been something that was developing for a while, but in a short time deteriorated to no sound at all. Andrew, of the Rangers, has the same amp and at max volume it distorts. It was not used for a long time, and this might be the explanation for it, although it wasn't abused either. At lower volumes, it's fine though.
Customer Support
:

The warranty the shop offered is for two years, which doesn't cover speaker damage. I left it in to be looked at after I noticed a deterioration in the sound, but the technician didn't find any major problems. It's in for repair again now and I'm waiting to see what they'll say this time. There's little information on the Peavey website about this amp, though manuals are to be found if you look hard.
Overall Rating
:

This was my first amp since the inception of 'The Psychedelic Rangers', a mixed (not heavy) rock band. The fact that it is a sturdy, compact, light, and yet fairly loud amp makes it a gem for some occasions. It beats having to haul around a bigger, more awkward amp if it's only for something small. I've alot of praise for the amp for these reasons, and most other musicians agree that you get a louder, more full sound than you'd expect out of it. Not for high volume practice sessions, or gigs however! It simply cannot compete with a loud band. So you will have to invest in a bigger amp if you're taking to the stage or the band start to crank it up. While my Microbass isn't in working order at the moment, I miss how easy it is to transport it and set it up. I'm using 60W Carsbro Bass Beaver now, which is a good performer, but isn't as easy to move around. I recommend this amp if you're a beginner, or involved in choir etc. - at the right price. Because you will have to invest in a more powerful one sooner or later.

Sound Quality

I'm very surprised by the output of this amp. It's obviously going to have a compromised low end due to it's low power and small speaker, but still I am very pleased with it's tone and volume for practice situations.
The tone knobs are passive - that is, they are 'cut-only'. I turn them all the way up - so that there is no cut. Then, I adjust the tone from my bass. I use a Dingwall 5 and a Hamer cruise (j-bass). My opinion is that using it this way gives the best response. I occasionally will roll back the treble a little.

I have a Brice HXB-406 6 string and an Ibanez GSR200TR 4 String. I run it though a BP200 Digitech Processor. It will not handle a Low B very well. The amp specs say that the frequency response is only 80HZ, nowhere near the 30HZ needed for a Low B. In order to hear it clearly you need to turn the bass EQ all the way down and on the pedal as well to hear the harmonics. I like a balanced tone and It becomes thin on the higher notes with this setting. With my 4 string with or without the pedal sounds awesome!!! It's within the Frequency Response range so it would naturally sound good. Rule of thumb for you 5 and 6 Stringers, the more power you have the better the clarity. Wattage does not neccessarily mean loudness, its how clear you hear the string. I've heard of people blowing their speakers out at the pregain set to 5, but I've never gone past that, plus always have a limiter for saftey. Distortion occurs at about 6 if your really playing loud with the treble all the way up. I use this with my band for now till I get a bigger Peavey amp. It does got some bigballs for competing against a 2x12 crate guitar amp. No comparision though, its not powerful enough to be heard over a drummer, unless he/she has a light touch. I still give it an 8 anyways because if used for the specific use of "practice" its a great amp. other uses will vary, but a full band playing...ciao baby!!

I've been playing for over two years and I also own a yorkville bassmaster 100 and a couple smaller amps that i mainly use for band practices for other people and, except for the input jack, it has worked great. If I lost it i probably wouldn't buy it again, partly because i have no money, and partly because it isn't THAT great of an amp. As far as features go, it has none other than the bass/mid/treble controls. It's great for a beginner amp but after around a year it started falling apart.

For what I'm using it for it sounds great. But I'm using it as an acoustic guitar amp mini PA system. I run my acoutic guitar through a Baggs Para Acoustic DI and send that signal to a Alesis Multimix 6FX mini mixer where I add reverb and mix in my vocal mic then send that mix to the Peavey. Set the Peavey EQ controls at 6, 2 and 1 and you end up with a very decent sounding acoustic guitar/PA amp that is very portable. This setup has enough power to play small venues like a small church, nursing home or small coffee house setting. Nothing ear shattering, but loud enough to be heard and give you control of the mix.

I'm using an ibanez gsr200 with this amp, now because i have a really crap lead this ting produces unwanted noise, i am almost surtain it is the lead because i tried the lead in a kikass amp and it buzzed and with loadsa different headphones it buzzed just as much, so it gives a pretty clean sound with a decent lead. I used it with guitar. YES, guitar. I found it more suitable for guitar than those cheap 20watt peavy guitar amps, 'cause they don't have punch. This amp has it. I played with Telecaster (beutiful sound with it) and stratocaster (still real punchy and good). It is nothing less or more than a good practise amp for rehearsals. Sound was rich and full and when I used drive it was strong enough to punch through the rest of band. Never got through 1/2 of volume. Even at 1/2 I outlouded drums :) But I heard it on bass. Anyway I like it more than it's guitar amps in this price cathegory. I like it at all. Onl thing I miss is glass belly sound (which you could not expect from bass amp anyway :) That's it.

Ok, its not bad, not great, i mean its good for a beginner, but its only got the bare ensentials. If your spending for than 550 (canadian, so like 400 americam) dont bother with it, beacuase your bass wont get the sound its capable of.

First off, all basses will sound more or less the same, so if you have a really good bass, dont bother with this. It isnt very loud, and if you put it up higher than 4 it sounds really bad. You wont be able to compete with a drum kit. DO NOT USE A 5 OR HIGHER STRING BASS. YOU WILL BLOW THE SPEAKER. I played this amp at 4.5 with my ibanez sg305dx, and it blew when i tapped the b string. bad news.

It's a practise amp, so don't expect it to have too many options in terms of features. What it does have, however, its more than befitting for the purpose of this amp - to be used in quiet solo practise or with a couple of guitars, maybe working on a song or whatnot. Basically you have your Gain, which in this case doubles as the volume, Low, Mid, and High knobs in the EQ. The headphone jack is nice if you are into the early hours working on something. You get the on/off button too. That's great.

I'm using this practice amp through my Yamaha RBX-270. I play in a punk band, that also likes to experiment with rock styles and for school/productions it's generally alot of fuller, blunter sounds required. For a practise amp, this will gracefully handle them all. A grunty, lowe end metal sound can be as easily obtained as a treble-y, punky punch and a booming blunt, bassy sound. I have noticed, when the volume is set above 7 and I have my treble/bass knob all the way up, there is a slight hum. But it is barely noticeable, and whilst playing has near-none or no effect on the sound. Otherwise its squealless and harmless.

If you took a rhinoceros, an elephant, and a 150 kilo mass of muscle and bulk, and compacted it into a 14" x 14" X 9" prism, you'd get this amp in terms of sturdiness. Its as tough as they come. It can play for hours and hours on end without complaining much or at all.
Its not likely that you'd be using it in a gig at all, but if we were playing a piece for a small room of 20 people, well, I could easily rely on it. No need for a backup at all, in my opinion

I bought this pfrom a peavey authorised dealer, and they have no quarms whatsoever in taking it back in for repairs/ or general advice if I need it. I got the guy's business card and some sound assurance. It was great that they were so confident in the product to be offering this amount of support for me.
Although I never had to email peavey, because the product has never failed on me, I've only been hearing great things about their level of customer support, along with forums for help. If I ever have a query on the amp, then I have rock-solid grounds for support

I've been Playing for just over two years and sought for a nice practice amp. Unfortunately in most cases these days, a low price is probably going to mean a generally low quality piece of equipment. However, that is possibly as far from the truth as you can get. I read every review I could find before purchasing the product, and found it lived up to every thing said about it.
The sturdiness and the knowledge it will last really sticks out to me, but couple that with a nice, room filling warm tone, or genral nice sound with many types of music, and you get a really great package, and a comparably low price. The features arent top notch, but what can you expect? If you can still get a decent sound, It shouldn't matter how many knobs/switches you get. Overall, I'd recommend it to all beginner bass players, aver comparing it to Crate, Fender and Danelectro of similar power (wattage) and size (speaker size and overall).
It's very portable, generally versatile and one of the best you can get out there in this price range, if not the best.

Don't know what year this tiny thing was built. Bought it in Dec. 2001 for 140Euro. I play mostly Hard Rock and it sounds fine FOR A PRACTICE AMP. No effects i think. I started playing bass with this amp. At the beginning i was satiesfied but as my skill level was rising, my opinion to the amp was going down... It IS a PRACTICE amp. Dont try to use it in a band.

I play a Peavy Fury 4-string. At low Volume the micro-thing sounds fine, but don't try to put the nob aboth 4. I think a clean Rock sounds best on higher volumes, but Slapping sounds pretty thin and using a effect-pedal is the worst u can do. Overall for price+sound+weight its still a nice amp

Play one year, but things sound already fine on my bass. I'm going to buy a SWR Workingman's 15 or a Roland DB500 as soon as i have enough money... poor student i am.
I played a few times on a much bigger Fender-something amp and it sounded much worse than with the peavy. Sometimes i play at the SWR Goliath plus Head, but thats no thing to compare :)

One of the early ones, before they added the trim. Single 8"speaker, 20 watts output. Controls: Input, Volume, Bass, Mid, Treble. Small, basic, pretty foolproof practice amp.

Surprisingly good. Treble response is quite good, and it even has a reasonable stab at low frequencies. Avoid turning the bass control up above halfway if you want to turn the volume up though.

It's a practice amp. It doesn't do floor-shaking-loud, it doesn't do sub-bass. What it does do is make your electric bass audible, with a reasonable tone, and it's small enough to tuck away under a coffee table or a bed. What more do yoiu want?

I purchased mine used in the mid 90's. Have no idea when it was made but even to this day it's in like new condition. Input, Volume, Bass, Mid, Treble and headphone jack. Very basic amp, not much to say about it here. I use mine for livingroom jams with friends of mine. Has plenty of power to compete with acoustic guitars and percussion.

Man does this little amp sound! It impresses everyone I jam with! My main bass is an active five string and it can even handle the low B! Very clean, tight and punchy sounding. Sounds a lot bigger than it looks. Also is very quiet. I've even thought about miking this amp in the studio for certain songs. Haven't done it yet but I'm sure it'll probably sound great.

It is exactly what I need and sounds great. For what I use this amp for I can't think of anything else I wish it had. If your in the market for a small practice amp, definitely give this one a try!

I'm not sure how old it is, but I got it two years ago and it was used then, so I'll guess it's anywhere from 4-8 years old. Still, I'm really attached to this little 50-watt amp. I can carry it anywhere and it's perfectly plain and simple: input, pregain, eq, headphone jack, power switch. For practice purposes I don't need anything else! I'm hoping to try it as a guitar amp soon, too (guitarists are often amused by the fact that it's smaller than their practice amps).
Sound Quality
:
6
I like to keep the high end up a bit 'cos my bass (a Danelectro Longhorn) sounds shinier that way. If the pregain gets turned up too high (past 7 or so) it will fuzz out sometimes, but this seems to vary with the weather, atmospheric conditions, who knows. I can just keep the volume knobs on the bass up and that works all right.
Can't really play gigs with this of course, unless it's a very small intimate venue and you're playing with very quiet people.

With bass guitar, the Microbass has a good tight sound that doesn't get into distortion territory before maxing out. But I get more use out of it with two other applications. 1) It's a good little keyboard amp, with more than adequate bass and treble to project a full, loud tone. Mostly I use the keyboard for auto-accompaniment while shredding my Strat through another amp. 2) Connected to a guitar through the Line 6 POD amp emulator. This is great! Again, the extra bottom allows the amp to ape the huge tone of a Marshall stack or AC-30, but at reasonable practice volumes. Easy on the back. Easy on the wallet! Easy on the wife!

Again, a VERY VERSATILE practice amp for keyboard, bass, guitar or anything with a plug on it. One gripe to pass along to Peavey: the little green pilot lot is hard to see if the amp is on the floor and your standing nearby. Because it's so quiet, I often go off and leave it running for days at a time. Otherwise, sweeeet.

These are great litle practice amps for either bass OR guitar. It has very basic controls - volume (called "pre-gain), bass/mid/treble controls, headphone jack and and on/off switch. 8" speaker, Black, industrial strength rhino-hide covering with reinforced corners.

Sounds great with almost anything you plug into it! Handles open "E" on a bass pretty well, gives a very convincing acoustic sound with an AE, nice rich jazz tone with a hollow body, and a full tone with a solid body. It's not designed to distort but with a decent pedal (I use a Snarling Dogs tweed E. Dog), it overdrives pretty nicely.

It seems way more substantial than the new model. I've only had it a week but I've played almost all my guitars through it and been VERY impressed. If you need a basic bass or guitar practice amp, CHECK THE MICROBASS OUT!!!

Only one channel no frills ,just designed for practice, however I recently ran the headphone output into a PA mixing board and the sound quality out of the board was awesome.A friend of mine used it this way to play bass for us in church and it performed flawlessly.

I don't know about the warranty on this amp, but Peavey usually had a pretty good warranty period.I've owned several other Peavey Amps and have only had one that wasn't reliable but I am an Electronics Tech so I was able to repair it the schematics for all Peavey Amps can be ordered online.

Model Year 2000, made in China. 8 inch driver, 20 watt @ 4 ohm RMS with built in (fixed) compression. It's relatively light.
I'm a beginner bass player, so I don't need a gig amp, just a good practice amp. This Peavey delivers for that purpose. My bass is an ESP B-105 (5 string, passive pickups) and this amp gives fat rich tone with that bass, compression effect is mild and I think improves the sound. No problem with low B string sound either. Although I'm sure better, bigger amp will sound better.
Features, what features? It has pre-gain, low, mid and high. If the high pot is set past 1/3, the amp buzzez (then again it maybe my cheap cable). Also a headphone jack (which sounds excellent). No speaker or line in jack. I wish it had a CD line in so I can practice with CD player and headphone. The Fender Bassman has it but >$100 more
Powerwise it's enough. I tried the similar Crate, Hartke and Fender Frontman 25B. This one sounds the best IMHO. Loud enough for practice in mid size living room.
