2 knobs, volume and gain. darius pohl, the maker, included two sound options for me via mini-switch.

the grey is darius pohl's take on the dod 250 preamp, but to my mind it's a totally different overdrive pedal. it has some of that special coarseness of the 250 overdrive, but has way more midrange to offer - just like your favorite bulimic model shows some curves finally (sorry, girls!).
it's very dynamic, a bit muffy with the gain all down and, but just like the dod or the mxr distion+, gets VERY trebley with the gain all up.
the sound in front of a clean amp always reminds me of the sounds keef richards and ron wood had in the 70s with their huge ampeg stacks - uncombed, sleazy, yet warm tones with some serious gain at hand if necessary. i really love playing rhythm guitar with this greasy fella here.
it does good in front of a not so overdriven amp, high-gain tones may get too boomy if you don't watch out. but it's all a question of when and what with this more low-gain overdrive pedal.

darius pohl is one of the greatest pedalbuilder i know, always prepared to get the best out of things. we had sent the grey back and forth about 3 times and he patiently was referring to my wishes about the frequencies in the grey. i am sure that he will be wellknown when it comes to the quality of his work!
you can mail at MastermindDP@web.de and there's a german review of the grey at http://www.guitartest.de/Eigenbau%20Hercules%20Strange%20Brew%20Targa%20und%20Grey.htm

i play rock, blues and pop styles. this pedal may not suit all players' needs for an overdrive, but i think that a huge group might find the qualities of the grey tempting although they didn't look for this particular tone.
