decent sound i guess,a bit quieter than a stock pedal but no quieter or better than a stock unit with upgraded components,i bought this pedal used and it popped real loud when stomped, problem was fixed by replacing the switch.
I tried it out with several amps, all tube, and for the price i paid ($25)for it ,it is satisfactory, sounds good with singles, soaps and humbuckers

seems as relaible as an original, the popping switch cant really be anyones fault but the switchs itself beacause it was a high quality switch to begin with, just went bad.
as for backup,it is my backup compressor,my main compressor is a ross clone that i built myself, that to me sounds better than any of these that i have ever tried, hand picking your own components just cant be beat

good pedal if you run accross one used,or if you are not interested in building one yourself, the price for a new one can go along way in equipment and materials to build your own and yours will be better if you test every component to make your own sound. This is not a good first pedal to tackle but after a few fuzzes you will be ready. The cost of building my own(and several others for people who have heard mine)was 50 bucks not counting paint, for top of the line components that are the same or better than whats inside of this.
Bottom line i guess is it is a good pedal and if you dont want to build or modify your own then you probally wont find a better one,but if you got the mentality to change the strings on a floyd rose or set the intonation on any guitar, then you got what it takes to build a whole line of the finest quality pedals for the price of one of these new.

I use z vex SHO pedal and t.c.electronic stereo chorus after this Analogman pedal. Firstly there are no noise anymore. I used to use Ross compressor and still have a couple of those but there got a some noise. I am using Two Rock Opal combo and Holland Gibbdroll 2X10.And This pedal sounds best for me now. I used to have a couple of MXR script Logo and Ross Comp, many other comps but This one is the best. I need Attack for compressor and other pedals I used to try was pretty muddy and not clear. But they are sweet sound and sometimes works fine. But this Analogman compressor is perfect for me. Because you can creat any sound you want. sometimes sounds like Orenge squeezer and sometimes Ross. And you can arrange with 3 knobs.

Awesome! I have gone through a lot of compressors and none hold up to this guy. I am keeping this one. Great endless sustain. Full sounding chords and single notes. I compared it to a real Ross compressor, and this guy is actually quieter. I think it is better than the original, but maybe I am just waaaay too excited about using it at a gig this Friday... :)

Best customer support I've gotten in years. Mike is very prompt at answering emails and is available over the phone as well.
Mike spent some time on the phone with me walking me through possible solutions to my problem, and then eventually I had to ship the unit back to him. I got the unit back in two weeks (for one of the weeks Mike was on vacation) fixed at no charge even though it was very possible that the problem with the unit was my fault. How is that for customer support!

I am playing a Jackson SLS with a Duncan jazz p/u in the neck and Duncan JB in the bridge position through a Mesa Boogie Triaxis and 50/50 power amp.
I originally had Mike do the mod to my dynacomp last year when he first started doing them. It sounded very close to my original Ross compressor. It nailed the tone and sustain.
Then I saw that Mike had recently found the original transistors that were used in the Ross comp. I had those installed to see if it would make any difference in the sound and it did!
Now it sounds just like the original. It is VERY hard to tell the difference. This comp gives me amazing sustain for leads. I use it with a clean sound for some snap or through a tube screamer for endless sustain.
Like most compressors, it adds some noise to the signal but not much.

This mod is a great improvement over the stock reissue dynacomp.
It completely transforms it into a Ross compressor. I have seen original Ross comps sell for $250-350 (I paid $250 for mine). There is no need for that now unless you are wanting to complete your Ross collection.

I had been checking our Trey Anastasio of Phish, and really dug his sound that he got. After doing the research, I found that he was using and original Ross Compressor, and after more research, realized how in-demand these pedals were. On Ebay, they were upwards or $375 - $400! I stumbled across Mike Piera's site, www.analogman.com, and saw his Ross Compressor Clone and read about it. His site is very informative and you can tell how much time and care he puts into the descriptions of his products.
Anyway, I sent him a Dunlop MXR Dyna Comp which he rips the guts of and replaces with his magic chips, wires, etc. All I know is when I got it back, it was exactly the sound I was looking for.

I use a bunch of things: My main guitar now is a 1977 Gibson ES-334TD in blonde, my amp is a Fender Blues DeVille 2x12. I am running a Dunlop Wah into a TS-9DX (also modded by Analog Man), then into an original modded TS-9, then into the Ross Compressor Clone. I use the TS-9DX for the main crunch rhythm sound, and then I kick in the 2nd TS-9 and the Ross Clone Compressor for lead. I find that setting the level on the Compressor louder and then the sensitivity around 9 o'clock gets the Trey Anastasio tone I was after. The pedal is a tad noisy but it is expected when you are running the other 3 pedals before it. I have a feeling that the wah attributes to that (I don't like my wah-wah!) The sound out of Mike Piera's Compressor is identical, if not less noisy and smoother than the original Ross.

Mike Piera is extremely relliable, friendly, helpful and kind. I called him initially, and then we corresponded by email the rest of the week. If you don't get and email back from him in under 30 minutes, it is rare. He answers all questions thoroughly. A+ - and I will deal with him for all my repair needs, and future pedal purhcases/mods/etc.

I have been playing guitar for over 15 years, started playing rock and then migrated to Jazz. I bought archtop guitars and studied the instrument for about 10 years. Now, after realizing that making money in Jazz is about as realistic as hell freezing over, I got involved in various rock/pop projects in New York and had to rely on sound from pedals and then I really started thinking about gear and my tone.
After trying out tons of pedals, I came across Analog Man's stuff, and have to say by far it is the best quality around. You won't be sorry - I can't see anything he makes not being of the best quality and sound.

I have many great tube amps (10 total) and some very nice American Fender and Hamer USA guitars (7 total) but I mostly auditioned this pedal with a '59 Fender Bassman Reissue with a Hoffman point to point wired board, a Fender Blues Jr. equipped with a Celestion Greenback speaker and modded by Curt Emery from Emery Sound , and a Marshall JTM45 reissue. For guitars I used a Fender American Standard Telecaster with a Dimarzio Fast Track 2 in the bridge, a Hamer USA Gold Top with Seymour Duncan P-90's, and a Fender Big Apple Strat with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a Seymour Duncan '59 in the neck position. I play mostly noise pop and vintage rock (50's 60's and 70's).
I think I'm becoming a Analog Mike devotee. Upon hearing the awesomeness that is the Analog Man Clone Chorus pedal, I decided to give the Analog Man Ross compressor clone a try. I traded a Route 66 pedal for it (The Route 66 has a very good compressor in it).
This is the best compressor pedal I have ever used. While the Route 66 is very good, the Analog Man CompROSSor is smoother, quieter and it gives your clean guitar sound a very nice presence that works great with delay, chorus and tremolo. I used it with a Line 6 Delay Modeler, the Analog Man Clone Chorus, and a Diaz Tremodillo and I got outstanding results every time.
If you're looking for a ultra-mega studio transparent compressor pedal that takes you a year to get a good sound out of, this is not your pedal. However if your looking for musicality, personality and great tone that doesn't pump wildly and fart out on you at high output settings get a Analog Man CompROSSor. You won't be disappointed.

Well on my end Mike is 2 for 2. I have been playing music longer than I haven't been playing and I'm very tone fussy. Both the Analog Man Clone Chorus and CompROSSor deliver the tone that I hear in my head when I think of the ideal chorus and copmressor pedal sounds. Good stuff!

Analog Man's Ross compression is easy to use. There are only two knobs, one for sensitivity and one for the level. It doesn't get any simpler than that! It operates just like a Dynacomp pedal and took me only a matter of minutes to find a rough estimation of the sound I was looking for.
Sound Quality
:

The sound quality of the Ross compressor is very nice. I tried a Dynacomp pedal before I sent it in to be modded and was very happy with the improvement. Mike does a good job of describing the difference in sound between the two pedals on his website. He describes the Dyna as having a sort of lumpy, sea sick sound while the ross stays smooth and fat throughout all dynamic levels. This is a good description. I'm running a hollowbody guitar into a wah pedal, then into two 808's (which were also modded from TS-9's by analog Mike), then into my Ross compression, and finally into a Mesa/Boogie Heartbreaker. I've got my 808's cranked, one set for fattness, the other for grit. The Ross smooths out these pedals and creates a rich, buttery sound that was unavailable through the Dyna or my Boss cs-3. It also responds very well to dynamics and keeps my tone fat and full no matter how hard or soft I play. As far as settings go I've got the level at about 4 o'clock and the sensitivity at about 8 o'clock for a little boost and mild squashing. There is a liitle hum that comes through when the level is cranked, but no more than one might expect from a true analog effect. The only thing I don't like is when I kick my Wah on the compressor is boosting the hum from it immensely. However, I must say that it has probably got more to do with a noisy wah and the fact that the compressor comes after it in the effects chain (I also leave it on all the time). The pedal sounds good especially when compared to a Dynacomp and the bogus cs-3 I was using for about a month. I gig very regularly and have been using the pedal for a couple of month's now. I do like it and would definitely replace it with another if this one disappeared.

Mike Piera seems to be runnig an honest business and is very responsive and happy to help anyone who asks. His website gives accurate descriptions of his work and he is not trying to sell any more than what is offerd there. From the few E-mail conversations that I've had with him he also seems to be very into what he does (he's a tone freak like the rest of us). Analog Mike is definitely someone that I will contact if I ever need any of this type of work done in the future.
Overall Rating

My overall rating of this pedal and of mike's work is a 10. I'm very much into the Trey thing and model my tones after the likes of his. This pedal is definitely a staple in creating that full, rich sound. I play regularly with a band and we are very much into the jam thing. We do lots of different things: Funk, latin jams, bluegrass/ rockabilly jams, and some jazzier stuff as well (mostly original). In other words we just want to groove and do our thing. With such a blend of styles, I like my tone be diverse, well understood, and to retain clarity no matter what I'm doing, and the compressor plays a key role in all of that. Thanks Mike.

I have a current issue MXR DynaComp, a 70's - 80's "block letter" MXR
DynaComp, and a black Ross Compressor. The Analog Man pedal beats them all. I'll probably sell the Ross, and maybe send in the MXR Dynacomp to
get the bypass option. I use the pedal with a '58 Fender Harvard, or a
'59 Fender Prinston. My guitar is a National Resolectric. I play electrified country blues/slide.

This pedal is a great enhancement for slide guitar played through an old Fender tube amp. I wouldn't leave home without it. I don't use any other effects with the exception of sometimes a t.c. electronic stereo chorus/pitch modulator/flanger pedal.
I would buy another if this one was lost or stolen or "borrowed."
