The Sound Quality is everything I was looking for in a compressor!
I play PRS (2 McCartys 2 Custom 24's and a Swamp Ash special) Brian Moore C-90 Piezo/Midi and a Modified 20 yr old American Fender Strat.
Egnater M4 preamps, VHT 2/50/2 or Boogie 20/20 power amp, Boogie and Marshall cabs with Celestion vintage 30's or Greenbacks, as well as 1964 Fender Black Face Deluxe Reverb and a 1964 Blackface Princeton Reverb. This Ross modification on my MXR Dyna comp was just what the doctor ordered! It has solved the swelling/pumping proble inherent in the Dyna comp. Now it is extremely smooth and steady and has a sweeter tone! Anologman Mike has done yet another EXCELLENT job on my pedals. Mike has done a TS-808 brown/kws mod to my Ibanez TS-9 and I bought a Analogman Clone Chorus which I absolutely love. See my Clone Chorus review. I own alot of pedals by alot of different manufacturers, Analogman stuff/mods are absolutely top notch EXCELLENT!!! I own/ have used alot of compressors and this mod sounds the best to my ears.

I have been playing for 28 years. I play all styles of music in a cover band that plays 150 +/- shows per year on the east coast from Key West Florida to Killington Vermont and all places in between.
On my pedalboard are Analogman Effects/Mods, Fulltone effects, Ernie Ball Volume, Axess-electronics BS2 or VHT Valvulator and various Midi controllers. I own or have used High and low end gear from many manufacturers. In my Mini rack I bring out TC Electronic G-Force, Lexicon MPX-G2, or Eventide H-3000DSE Egnater M4 preamps and Boogie or VHT power amps. ANALOGMAN MIKE is THE BEST!!! When you get the mod done you will be smiling ear to ear!!! I know I've given all 10's but I can't give less!

Like most compressors, you have to tweak them a bit to get the best possible response, but if you are used to an MXR dynacomp, it works the same way and isn't much trouble.

I am giving it a 10 based on a few things. One, it is a modified dyna-comp, so if you like the dyna comp, but would like an "improved" dynacomp sound, then this is for you. Two, I compared it to three other compressors (A Boss CS-2, a standard re-issue dynacomp and a Maxon CP101-which is a great compressor!) and I really liked this pedal better OVERALL.
I've been re-doing my pedal board lately. The dyna-comp was more of a rock-n-roll sound with the midrange boost and
snappy attack, but it was kind of unnatural with it's uneven swell of sustain-and it changed the sound of my guitar.
The Maxon is a GREAT, pristine compressor! The Maxon and the "dyna-ross" mod worked great together, but alas I am only allowing myself one compressor- The dyna-ross retains the dyna-comps rock-n-roll characteristics, but seems quieter and smooths out the sustain-The Maxon was like a clean boost that compressed just slightly and didn't have near the sustain of the dyna comp (of course the Maxon sounded more natural in that way as well) but the "dyna-ross" cleans up nice at moderate settings and even sounds good on my accoustic!!! (The Maxon was too bright) putting all three of these in front of my Keeley Modified TS-9 also showed the differences very clearly- The Maxon emphasised alot of high and high mids which kind of gave it a "honky" sound......(that does not mean that if you played funk, you sounded "white")
-sorry-anyway- The Maxon also had very little sustain. The dyna comp was too midrangey and altered the tone of my guitar. I liked some of that, because it sounded like rock-n-roll, the dyna comp is an institution! but the "dyna ross" is like a toned down dyna comp, different mid shift,
smoother gain swell, still plucky, still has monster sustain-a good
compromise and now-my only compressor.

Analog Mike and Robert Keeley both deserve alot of respect for providing great customer service, doing honest business on the web, and making boutique tone available to the working musicians and hobbyists for a decent price. I highly recommend both of them.

This is now my only compressor- It gives me the classic tone of the dynacomp, but with more subtle results. Although at 160.00, the Maxon was a good choice at 135.00 and the dynacomp being half that at 65.00, I wouldn't quite call it a "bargain" but you often get what you pay for and it's hard to put a price on certain things like craftsmanship. This is a great improvement on the dynacomp-and has alot of character.

I plug an old Ibanez Artist into a Fender Deluxe Reverb, using the 1st channel. It definitely has a Trey Anastasio vibe to it, but even better is the B.B. King to Kenny Burrell tone that I can somehow manage to pull out of my Artist (Les Paulish) when I thought for sure that an archtop or big hollowbody would be necessary to get such a thick tone.

Mine is a DynaComp mod. I have had no troubles with the DynaComp and from what I hear about Analog Mike, I don't expect any trouble with the mod.

I play blues. It's a great pedal modification. Thanks to Trey Anastasio for bringing it to our attention. His tone comes from so much more than this pedal, but the Ross is a great accent to good playing and an already good tone.

It's a compressor. I set the level to match the clean signal, and the sustain (the other knob) to about 25% and leave it alone.

I play a Hamer Echotone/Duncan Antiquity pickups through a '59 Bassman reissue. I purchased the MXR Dyna Comp earlier this Summer and couldn't quite get a sound I really liked - all kinds off burping and swelling - so I had Mike do the mod, and what a difference. Now it produces a beautifully subtle, clean compression (first in line) with sustain to spare. I thought I liked the Bassman before...WOW!

I've only had it a short time, but the solders look solid and the thing is in an MXR box - it weighs about as much as a Volkswagen. I don't expect it to fall apart.
I'll have to gig without a backup because I only have one, but I'm not worried about this pedal.

I play blues and blues influenced rock, mostly, and have been for about 25 years. I just set out in the last couple of months to start replacing my ancient, abused (I was a teenager when I got this stuff) rig. In fact, the guitar, amp, compressor and other pedals are all brand new. The user reviews at Harmony Central have been very, very helpful to me. Thanks for pointing me toward AnalogMan.

THIS IS A SUPPLEMENTAL REVEIW TO ONE I LEFT BEFORE.
I JUST HAD MY FIRST GIGS WITH THIS PEDAL AND COULDN'T BE HAPPIER WITH MY TONE. fENDER TELE>> VOX RI WAH>> ANALOGMAN COMPRESSOR>> 2 TAN ROSS DISTORTIONS>> FENDER HATROD DEVILLE>> loop> BOSS CE-2 CHORUS> BOSS RV-3> loop return>> AUDIENCE AND I HAVE GOTTEN NOTHING BUT UNREAL FEEDBACK AS TO HOW GOOD MY TONE IS. AFTER REPLACING THE BOSS DISTORTION AND COMPRESSION I HAVE A TONE THAT HAS BECOME COMPLETELY MY OWN. IT JUST ROLLS OUT OF THE SPEAKERS.
!!!!!!!!!THANKS MIKE!!!!!!!!!!!

No manual don't need one. there is one knob for level or gain and one for sustain and sensitivity. I use an adapter so i don't need to deal with the screws on the bottom. the only thing i don't care for is how close together the input jack and the power jack are but that doesn't hurt me none so it's definitely not a problem. The compressors he makes from scratch have the power jacks on the top.

I have to admit when i first plugged it in it took me a while to get the hang of this pedal. I had been using a boss cs-3 which isn't a BAD pedal at all by any means these can get real nice sustain if you just don't over do it. but once i got all my pedals in a good order and got my levels set i started homing in on a good tone.
and then there it was....
The tone i was looking for, half way between David Gilmore, Trey, Robbie Robertson circa the band( now if i could come across an old, i think it was a 1940's fender broadcaster), jerry, with a real nice clean or overdriven blues sound, a good country twang and even a litlle dave navarro in there.nice and versitile. I am surprised that i can set my volumes on my amp at about 2 1/2 and put both dials on the compressor at 9 o'clock and I get a real nice thickened tone and be totally loud enough to mix well, With my volumes at three I really had to turn down. Before I traced down the noisiness it did squeal a bit with distortion but once i eased back on the amp level it fell in the pocket...
here is my set up
American tele w/ dual single coils>>vox reissue wah>>vintage tan ross distorion( this is a sweet pedal too, i use it turned about a third of the way up for lighter drive on some parts and can kick in the amp's fully cranked lighter distortion for nice over saturated solos and some times i fully crank the ross for good chunky rythmds and solos , the ross also sound great with the chorus)>>the analog man dyna/ross mod compressor>>> a fender hotrod deville 4x10(sweeeeeeet amp)>>>loop out to the input on vintage boss ce-2 (with black made in japan sticker, unfortunately the sales guy told me had kept the metal thumb screw for himself)>>>boss rv-3 digital delay back to the loop return>>> speakers>>crowds ears. the wah and chorus could both be a little loud before but the compressor helps mellow both of these out, ican finally use my wah with distortion and not kill everyone.
Also I can get FULLLLL string response on big chords which was a problem before, the only problem other than a bit less thickness on the tone ,that i couldn't get from the cs-3
To me it almost sounds like the tone is just "rolling" out
of those speakers, not to mention now the are even some new growls coming out of there that i had never heard before.

So far so good, have had a few rehearsals with it but am waiting for a show to try it out at, but i doubt there will be any problems with the quality of tone. Will keep cs-3 as back up ntil i can order the made from scratch compROSSor as to ALWAYS have a back up because i would not want to do a show with out it.
Also this thing is HEAVY for it's size, nice heavy casing.

Mike always answered my emails quickly and i sent him at least twenty researching his products. He always answered my questions even about products he didn't carry himself. The only thing was is that i had no idea how long the waiting list was for one of the made from scratch pedals was, so I ordered one of these first so i could have it for my pending gigs, there was no wait and it was on my door in 10 days. sent by priority mail and nicely packed.
Price included shipping for a premade modded mxr dynacomp. I didn't need to send him one to mod.

I play in a trippy pop band that has some diversity, not a one trick pony by any means, but i have been playing for 15 years and i will play anything i can make my sloppy little finger to play , any style or song that catches my ear and this pedal can cover every base. If it were lost or stolen I'd would be preparing a bribe to try to get a rush on a new one asap. If you are looking for some high tech gizmo that is expensive and probably hard to dial into this is not for you and i'm not saying those are bad it's just a different product, but if you want a bitchin sounding compressor pedal at a decent price for the work and quality then this is a good trade kimo sabe.
I did a lot of research on this and two other products(morgan miller and the ross<which i will buy one of anyways eventually just to have>) I just got more info from mike and ross is out of business so i bought this one off his website based on reputation and the fact that i can send this to him to be serviced if i need to.

I use a Matchless chieftain and a strat with Kinman pickups. This thing is extremely quiet, the sustain is even better than the dyna-comp, it is not squashed sounding, the tone is smoother and rounder, the available gain is increased, the high end is not lost.I can barely believe my ears to tell you the truth. A comp. is my primary effect and I feel I have the best there is.
