Ashbass FUZZbrite

Two knobs, volume and depth. Couldn't really be simpler. It's no trouble at all to get the sound it's designed to make.

I'm playing a 1990s Japanese Tele '62 Custom RI and an SG Special faded, both equipped with Catswhisker pickups, into a Vox AC4TV for home use and a 1990s Peavey Classic 50 for stage use. What this pedal delivers is classic, nasty, Pebbles / Nuggets style mid-'60s fuzz of a kind which all the various smoothed-out Muff-type fuzzes on the market right now just can't do. This thing spits and snarls. What it also does is stack up superbly with other pedals - kick on a Tubescreamer or similar and you can go from garage-band nirvana to that late '60s Jimi vibe instantly. Noise? Yes, there's a little, but what do you expect from a fuzz? Plus there's zero tone suckage when the unit's off. The only reason I'm giving it a 9 is that it's not going to be for everybody - but if you're into the kind of sound it makes you can't go wrong.

The build seems rock-solid. I've got other pedals which feel worryingly flimsy (Electro-Harmonix, for example) and this is the polar opposite. There are still '60s Mosrite Fuzzrites around and working today (and going for ridiculous prices online) and I expect this Fuzzbrite to be just as hardy as the original.

I've emailed Ashley Bass on a few occasions and the replies have always been extremely prompt and helpful. Can't be faulted, really.

I play everything from blues to '60s punk to noise-rock to alt-country and beyond, and have been playing for twenty-five years or so. Fuzz has been a favourite sound of mine since I first heard 'Satisfaction' and the Stooges, and I've been through a lot of stompboxes trying to get that sound without the muddy bass-heaviness of a lot of more modern fuzzes: finally I've found the pedal I was looking for. It's simple but perfect at what it does. If anything happened to it I'd get another in a second.

2 knobs. Best to set to 8 or above and there you have it.

I use this mostly for surf as this (as are most fuzzes) is/are not that versatile. Jazzmaster >> FUZZbrite >> Nova Delay >> amp with Tremolo and Reverb.

I have lots of fuzz boxes and this one is just plain fun! I like this or my byoc triangle muff for surf.

One important note is if you want it to sound like the old ones you need to get the cheap carbon/zinc batteries from the dollar store. Use modern batteries make the top end a bit piercing.

Cant say. The components are in a clump of bondo (of chewing gum I cant tell), so like other gooped pedals you cant fix it IF it does go bad.

They seem nice.

A great fuzz for what it does. I dont know why they put an LED on it as it is obvious when it is on and it just drains the battery faster. It would also be nice to offer two models with the option of a smaller box, but for how I use it the larger size is fine.

As far as getting a good true 60's Fuzz sound that does not sound like every fuzz face clone out there this things excels and you'll be hard pressed to find better. For Instrumental fans of the Ventures, Shadows or Japanese Eleki sounds it's the bomb. At lower settings with the guitar volume turned down you can get very close to sitar sounds. Very Cool. Iron Butterfly to Neil Young to Takeshi Terauchi, can be subtle and twangy or over the top sustain and buzz.
I'm giving it a 9 because under the Harmony Central ratings 10 has "pristine" after it. This thing is too trashy sounding in a great way to call "pristine" and that's why it's so cool. It's true bypass as well for any of you who think that's dandy

I solder for a living and upon opening the unit to install a battery I was impressed by the neatness and good looking solder joints so I don't perceive any problems with reliability. It's built like they were 40 years ago, right. I've read some great comments on Ashley's customer service so the product is definitely backed up by someone who cares

I play a lot of styles of music with a lot of old wacky and not so wacky guitars. I bought this for 60's instrumental music and it does that extremely well and extremely convincing. You can't beat the price but if it were twice as much I'd still buy it (and I'm cheap when it comes to pedals) and if something happened to it I'd replace it immediately. There are a lot of sounds in this pedal. Didn't think I'd find something like this, with all the over engineered and over thought boutique pedals out there. This one's a perfect copy of the Mosrite and it's well executed.

hands down the best fuzz i have ever played. im selling my 60's maestro fuzztone and a byoc tonebender clone i built. using a non reverse firebird, sg standard and a jr through a fender vibro king nothing else in the chain. all three guitars sound great with this pedal. i play 60's garage styled r n r. this can go from stooges wanna be your dog to mudhoney touch me im sick to davie allan and the arrows wild angels theme.

so far so good. no need for a backup unless i had two of these. ****, i would run them together.

they built a plain looking pedal that works real real well. no crappy graphics or silly cliche names, just an amazing fuzz. best one i have ever played by far.

Switch, Depth and Volume knobs, battery or a/c adapter. Very straight forward. I thought mine was defective, but found out it was my power adapter.

What can I say, this pedal is one of a kind. Reproduces that classic mosrite 60's fuzz. My setup is fairly cheap, an ibanez hollowbody and a very cheap 15 watt amp. I just love the different sounds that come out of my setup. Really worth more than the price and cheaper than pulling a Link Wray on the speaker cones.

Haven't used it for that long, but it's a metal box that I'm sure can take some abuse. The only reason I would need a backup is if got stolen.

Don't know, too early to tell. Probably will get stolen before it warrants any repair. Seller seems like an honest person.

I've heard and tried demos of other fuzz pedals, but this one in particular has a certain metallic feel to it that I love. As a first pedal, this one is really fun and simple. Well priced and a great value that's easier to find than the original.

Easy to use, just on/off switch and two knobs, Volume and Depth, both of which can be used to shape it's sound, although I personally wouldn't use either of them much below 7 or 8.

I listen to and play predominantly Garage, psychedelic, rock 'n' roll/rockabilly. I mainly use a 60's re-issue Tele/Kay ET200 through either a Selmer Zodiac Twin Fifty or Laney 2x12 VC30. This pedal is without doubt, THE best fuzz I have used or heard, period. Forget Smooth Big Muff tones, this thing spits and grinds and sounds like your speakers are very close to ripping themselves apart! The top end is pretty dangerous, and with my Tele and Selmer it's enough to take the top of your head off, so maybe increasing the low end on your amp a bit would help prevent bleeding ears. This thing is pure 60's, and I would not be surprised at all if it was a germanium transistor, however we'll never know as Ashley Bass has coated it in some sort of putty stuff, presumably to protect against copies, which is more than fair enough! I usually use this with the volume knob about 7/8 and the depth around 9, as full whack is just a teeny bit too much if you actually want to hear the notes. Mine is the slightly upgraded version, with the orange LED, and supposedly true bypass, however the tone when this is off is slightly dulled, could possibly be wrong with just mine though as it has been gigged a lot!

I've had this for about half a year now and absolutely no problems until about 2 weeks ago when it made some nasty crackling noises and struggled to stay on, but i literally gave it a light kick and it's been fine since. It's built like a tank which stands to reason seeing as it is just a large box made of metal and I've used It at a lot of gigs with lots of sweaty and energetic spectators stamping on it and there's been no problems, would definitely use it without a backup, I already do! Also picks up Polish Radio but this is quite entertaining if you turn up your amp and tune it a bit with the two knobs.

Haven't had to deal with Ashley Bass and I don't think I will have to anytime soon, the website is good though and it was packaged nice and snug and shipped very promptly.

I bought this because a friend told me about how amazing his was, and he was right! I've been playing nearly 10 tears and this is hands down my favourite and most used pedal. I also own a Big Muff Pi which I bought before this in search of a 60's sounding fuzz pedal and it's ok, but it's nothing compared to the FUZZbrite. Apparantly the Yardbirds used one at some point, which makes sense as this pedal is 60's to the core, not only in sound quality but looks too. It's also extremely loyal to the original Mosrite Fuzzrite in both design and sound (there is a recording on the Ashbass website of the same riff played through both an Ashbass and a Mosrite and they're identical) This pedal is perfect for any Garage/psychedelic player, and also good for more modern grungey/trashy stuff (think ***** Galore if you've heard them). If this were stolen I would be EXTREMELY P*SSED OFF!, but I would definitely buy another, no doubt. One last thing, this pedal just creates fuzz riffs on it's own, this thing makes it easy! Buy one and try it, and if it goes wrong just kick it!

seriously, this pedal makes all of my effects stand out. when i turn down the depth knob... it just makes my tone thick and stand out really nice...old school style warm and pleasing how it should be. i use the fuzzbrite before my whammy and wow.. sounds like a synth and then add some delay with some shifting and a taste of modulations. your in for a warm synth sounds... my god, this pedal rocks and i love it as much as my fuzz factory............noise baby noise!!!!

I've been searching for this pedal for 25 years, and I've had a lot of fuzz pedals and wasted a lot of money in the process.
This is pure 60s garage. If you're looking for that heavy metal wall of smooth syrupy distortion look elsewhere. This has teeth, and you can play riffs without the notes getting all cosy together under a warm blanket. This thing wants to stand up and scream!
I love the way the fuzz breaks down after the note, not hanging around like an unwanted fart.

Can't comment on reliability as it's yet to hit the road, but it looks hard enough to stand up to an earth bound leaping cuban heel or two.

This is a great fuzztone. Straight forward with no bells and whistles. Volume and Depth pots and a true bypass circuit. 9volt adapter jack is a nice touch.

The fuzz is genuine no matter what amp I am using. Mostly twin reverb with JBL's or a 69 Bassman with two 15's. Even works great trough my Kustom sidewinder. Using my Gretsch with Hilotrons is a little weak but all my other guitars make the fuzz more than adequate. Only weak point seems to be roll off on the depth pot, other than that the pedal is flawless.

The unit is well built and the case is indestructable. Only concern on reliability is the components being buried in bondo. Makes it almost imposible to field repair if it ever needed it. So one might be smart to have a back up just in case.

I play mostly 60's and early 70's rock and a lot of contemporary Gospel. This pedal definitely gets the "Ventures" fuzz as well as the Stones and Iron Butterfly. I have been playing for 45 years. I would probably buy another one but would try and see if they could keep the bondo off. I compared it to a Maestro fuzztone. Sound is better and the 9volt system is a plus. Also tried and fuzzface and big muff. This is still a better sound even with the few little problems.

There's not a whole lot to this guy, two knobs.

Here's my setup: A custom built Jazzmaster (GFS Wild Dog oversized humbuckers w/coil split) into a Fender Supersonic (wonderfully versatile all tube amp that I cherish) cranked between 6 and 10 (depending) w/ a hot plate attenuator ...and some other pedals in the train (big muff, blue box, so on) but we're here to talk about the Fuzzbrite.

If you're after that thick, bassy, cream drenched fuzz like the Big Muff Pi, then don't bother. This thing just seethes and buzzes and spatters, I can't get enough of it. It's a pretty right on recreation of that old famous Mosrite pedal based directly on an original, in terms of recreation I'd give it a ten (think Davie Allen and the Arrows, a whole lot of the Nuggets bands, the little fuzz parts in the Stooges' 1969, Swamp Rats to some extent, though not quite...). I'm knocking it down to an 8 because the thing's primative (intentionally so), a little noisy, depending on what guitar I use it can be difficult to keep the treble below something murderous (think hat pin to the eardrum), and there's not a whole lot of versatility. But I'm bumping it back up to a 9 for the fact that Ashely improved the original design by making it true bypass.

The output of your pickups seems to have quite an effect on it, my overwound Strat (10k bridge pop) and humbuckered Jazzmaster get a strong, solidified zzzzzz with some breakup as the notes fade, whereas my vintage output Tele gets some more breakup and spit and seems to stop dead once the note starts to fade out, similar to what I've noticed in some of those old garage singles. Also, when wide open, I get a bit of this white noise over the top of my power chords. It can be controlled a little, and I personally welcome it to a degree, but you let that do what you wish to my rating.

I've had it about a year and there have been two times this pedal hasn't worked for me. Once was because I didn't change the batteries. The other time, during a show in Minneapolis, I had noticed the nut coming lose on the output jack and tightened it. This had rotated the jack a bit, and it wound up coming in contact with the volume pot (to which it is very close, apparently), which cut the signal (shorted it out?). I feared the worst but when I got it home, took it apart, and saw what simple fix it was, I was totally relieved; this pedal may be a third of the ebay price of the original Mosrites, but a hundred bucks is still a lotta scratch.

Additionally, it's a big metal box. You'd have to subject it to Nazi torture methods to break it. Or stupidly drop it *directly* onto the volume knob from halfway up a flight of stairs onto concrete like I did (bent it slightly, but broke the plastic knob cover)--Works fine. ;)

You'll probably have to repair it yourself since the company is just the dude who builds these.

The band I play it in is sort of my friends and I's inept attempt at a Birthday Party / Stooges / Pussy Galore kinda thing, a lotta Nuggets/Pebbles influence. And in my case some Blind Willie Johnson and the like, though I never seem to use the Fuzzbrite when I'm playing slide--don't know why not!

If you want some '60s fuzz that's just mean and spits razors then this is a solid bet. It's a one trick pony, as others have mentioned, but damn it's a great one. Great for stinging leads, groovy hooks, or raunchy noise.

I give it a ten overall because not only is it an improvement over the original (true bypass), it's a third of the price, and the sound is killer.

Sounds good for what it does, but what all these reviews fail to mention is that this is basically an Octafuzz. When at full depth, it is exactly an Octafuzz. You hit two notes together and it screeches (yes, I realize that's what an octafuzz does). At lower depth levels you do get "normal" fuzz sounds, but not what you'd consider "fuzz" to be. I can get better "Satisfaction" tones from my Keeley Fuzz Head. This isn't a total knock for the Fuzzbrite. I guess it does what it is designed to do, but all the previous reviews have not given the whole story. The octave effect ruins it. Based on these reviews I thought I'd be drenched in badass fuzz. Instead it's an unpleasing assault on my ears. Not even close to Satisfaction. Kind of close to Iron Butterfly, but harsher sounding.

Not very useful for anything other than harsh, buzzsaw stuff. A one trick pony that's more of a novelty than a useful musical tool.

Very simple to use.
Plug in. Set the depth to 10. Adjust volume to taste. Step on the switch and get yourself ready for the most badass 60s fuzz around.

This pedal is a classic 60s raunchy buzzy fuzz. Not much bottom end, but it's not supposed to sound like a BigMuff.
It is perfect for "Satisfaction," "Psychotic Reaction," and just about anything else on the Nuggets anthology.

Very solid. The box is sturdy. The wiring looks good. The circuit itself is encased in a putty-looking substance, just like the original Mosrite Fuzzrite on which the Fuzzbrite is based.

Ashley was very quick to ship and reply to emails. I suspect that if anything went wrong he'd be cool to make it right.

This is a great addition to my line-up of fuzz.
It gets me the trebly buzzy bee fuzz of many of my favorite 60s garage bands. It's lo-fi in all the right ways, but with a few nice modern touches like true bypass and an LED.

Easy to use. Just plug in and go. You do have to unscrew the bottom portion of the frame to get to the battery.

Great sound. You can get stuff ranging from 60's surf, garage, and that screeching Raw Power sound. I'm using it through a Fender Deville 2x12 combo, alongside a tremelo pedal, and using a strat.Sounds cool combined with the tremelo. Good for the psych, acid rock, punk vibe.

Had it for a week. Looks pretty sturdy. We'll see how it holds up.

Have not had to get it repaired yet.

I play 60's influenced garage punk.It sounds great for the stuff I'm into, which is stuff like the Sonics, Yardbirds, Standells, Pretty Things. If I were to have to replace it I would definitely get another. It beats paying 300 bucks for an original 60's Mosrite Fuzzrite. The one thing that would make it easier to use would be a battery compartment, so you wouldn't have to open up the bottom and expose all the wiring to get to the battery. This pedal is awesome though. A lot of fun, which is what playing rock and roll is all about.

I consider myself a Fuzz Snob when it comes to Fuzz pedals.
My favourite form of music is mid 60s garage and have been listening to it for 30years.
This is the best fuzztone ive heard.
Never owned any original 60s pedal so i cant compare them.

Only had it a week and only for home use.
Im sure it would be great for live shows.

Simple guitar- fuzz pedal- amp set up, no other pedals.
I use the reverb and tremelo on my Vox 15.
Fender Jazzmaster, Epiphone Casino and Gretsch Corvette, they all sound great with this pedal.
Why pay $250 up for a "boutiuqe" ugly pedal when you can get this for 100 bucks?
Would get another if this was lost/stolen.

Only two knobs here (Volume and Depth, which is sort of a combination fuzz amount/tone in that the the more you turn it up the louder and brighter the fuzz gets). Two knobs is easy, but they're mounted on the FRONT of the box, not on the top, so it ain't perfect ergonomics.

If you're looking for a fuzz along the lines of a Big Muff or Superfuzz, you've picked the wrong the horse; this is a classic angry kazoo buzz bomb along the lines on the original Maestro Fuzz Tone, and the Mosrite Fuzzrite, of which this particular pedal is based on.

Sustain? Not much. Godzilla Fart lows? Nope. Massive increase in volume when engaged? Uh-uh. But this fuzz is still plenty fun and musical without being shrill, having a rounded tone that can sound like a sax or sitar when dialed in right. Ever hear the fuzz on old Ventures songs, like "The 2000 pound Bee"? This fuzz'll do it, no prob.

Having played an original Fuzzrite before, I can say with some authority that Ashbass has got it nailed, but maybe with a little more volume when cranked. It also does that same neat thing old Fuzz Faces do, in that you can clean up the fuzz when you roll back your guitars' volume knob.

Too new to tell; a friend has had one of these for a while with no problems. Personally, I wouldn't mind a little more wire for the individual connections inside, or maybe have the mystery circuit (covered in epoxy so's nobody can copy it--it looks like a big glob of Wrigley's chewing gum) mounted to something, rather than just floating there. Maybe it helps the tone; I dunno.

I got it directly from Ashley Bass himself, who was very prompt and and attentive. I'd bet if I had a beef with the rascal I could send it back and get it fixed no prob.

I've got oodles of Fuzz boxes! Stuff from Boss, DOD, Way Huge, Z Vex, Voodoo Lab, Danelectro, Electro-Harmonix, etc, etc. THIS pedal is the closest ever to getting that old-school fuzz I've coveted ever since I used a borrowed Maestro Super Fuzz Tone for a few months while on tour. This little box already has a place in my heart, and it will certainly be used often around here. Plus, for the price, it can't be beat!

Quite good-looking fella with 2 knobs (volume and intensity).
True bypass.
Nothing special, just a vintage looking fuzz.
No manual included.
Knobs stays fine when tweaking.
Very easy to get some Freaky sounds from the 60's!
Not like the 70's style fuzz, It has some nasty robotic buzz Fuzz!

Not too heavy and creamy or bassy, Its rather tonally well balanced than any other vintage fuzz(like Fulltones, Frantone, Dallas-Arbiter, RogerMayer).
Since this one appeared, my favourite pedal was RM Voodoo-1 and the Cusack Screamer Fuzz. Now I mainly use this baby for some nasty solos and funk rythm.

Some might say that this pedal lacking the tone knob is a miss, BuT!
ppl who say they need a tone knob for this kinda pedal is a no-brainer in rock'nroll history or a just a Metal-head.

Two knobs. But the sound coming from this 60's monster will make you cry.

And I had many chances to get to play with many boutique pedals and rack mounted effectors.

And I tell you, this is the by-far the best FUZZ I ever played!
Its not FUZZ pedal for modern stuff(in my opinion) but for any 60s garage rock and PSYCDELICs, 80-90s new wave music.. its jjust got-to-go pedal.

I had a chance to play a Original Morsite Fuzzrite, but Fuzzbrite is like just the same as in quality but for the 3times less the price.

Its well suited for Hendrix style too.
I had 3 Roger Mayer Fuzz pedals and Fulltones' . Fulltones are useless. comparing to this one.
Roger mayer got a point on its own though.
So I keep the Rogermayer and the FuzzBrite.

Really easy to get started using with basic volume and depth knob. On amplifier adjustments can REALLY affect fuzztone, so time spent knob twiddling will reward you.

I can hit the Seeds tone I've been searching for, but it's taking me longer to get the Music Machine and Jesus and Mary Chain fuzz. So far, I think I made a wise purchase and will get most of what I want over time. My sweet spot so far is at the Fuzzbrite 8-10 depth, 6-9 volume, and amplifier at volume 5+. Treble/bass controls also make a big difference.

I first tried it with a cheap practice SS amp and it definitely improved the sound, but did not come close to what I was looking for. When I chained it to my Selmer Treble & Bass 50 Mk III and warmed up the valves, I knew everything was gonna be alright. I use it with a an old Framus baritone with two single coil pickups.

My cabinet is an old B&H speaker cab with a Goodmans Audiom 51 Green 20 UK/40 USA watt 16 ohm 1960's speaker, closed back and it has an an already amazing sustain on it's own, and adds extra bite to the Fuzzbrite.

Seems solid, if blocky. I'll gig with it.

Ashbass has been extremely helpful and responsive so far and I have no reason to doubt they will be that way in the future.

Fuzzed out psych punk, noise, metal, hard core, and garage rock. This should do me right.

I dig the fuzzzzzzz, and the Fuzzbrite does it's job well.

I'd buy another. It's priced right.

I submitted a review for the Fuzzbrite a few days ago but it never got posted. I tried to email Harmony Central regarding this but I cannot find a contact link other than to the webmaster which just sent the email back to me undelivered twice. So, I'm going to give it another try...The pedal does not come with a manual but it really is not needed. Simple instrument in and outs with ac adapter port along with volume and depth control knobs. The pedal features true bypass and I really think it sounds best when running off of a carbon battery (germanium transistors?). This pedal is super easy to use.

The Fuzzbrite is basically an updated clone of the Mosrite Fuzzrite pedal. Having never owned a Fuzzrite pedal I cannot judge how close the Fuzzbrite is to an original but I do know this is definitely the 60's buzz fuzz sound I was looking for in allowing me to obtain those cool psychedelic fuzz tones I grew up with. I can easily get the Satisfaction, Psychotic Reaction, Yarbirds tones that just cannot be had from other fuzz pedals. In used to own a Verbatone Verbafuzz pedal which I thought did a pretty close job of obtaining those tones but the Ashbass Fuzzbrite blows that pedal away.

The pedal seems to be very well made although I did add some stick-on feet to the bottom so the pedal won't slide around when I'm using the footswitch. I would have no fears of using it without a backup.

Other than a few emails regarding the purchase from eBay I've not really needed to deal with any customer support issues, but I don't think it would be a problem should such a situation arise.

I play various types of rock music (mostly my own material) but this pedal will definitely fit the bill when I'm looking for a 60's vibe to the music. I have been playing more years than I want to admit to. I'm not going to list all my gear here, but basically Fender Strats into various tube amps and several other pedals. If lost or stolen I would without question purchase another one. I love how easy it is to get great fuzz tones out of this pedal. I very highly recommend this pedal to anyone seeking that 60's psychedelic buzz tone!

Out of the box terrific sound (see below). Very easy 2-knob operation, no instructions included but none needed.

In my search for a certain guitar tones I have tendency to go through several pedals in my quest for an elusive sound. I have been searching for the right kind of fuzz that will give me that 60's psychedelic fuzz sound (Psychotic Reaction, Yardbirds, Satisfaction...the buzz fuzz sound). I thought I had found it a while back with the Verbafuzz pedal which when tweaked right would come really close to that sound...yet it still didn't quite nail it. After checking out the sound clips and although having never owned a Mosrite Fuzzrite pedal I figured I'd give the Fuzzbrite a try. Wow, this definitely nails the elusive sound! I think it sounds best with a carbon type battery (possibly germaniums?). It sound terrific with the rest of my set up. Mostly running various strats through various effects and amps.

Appears to be well built. I did add some adhesive feet to the bottom to keep it from sliding around on the floor.

Haven't had a need for customer support.

For the price it's had to beat the Fuzzbrite, a terrific value! If stolen would definitely purchase another one. I recommend this pedal to anyone seeking that 60's psychedelic buzz fuzz sound.

Two dials and a foot switch make this pedal very easy to use. I got the sound I was looking for in seconds.

I have been looking for a pedal to get Davie Allan's 60's fuzztone sound for ages and this pedal is it. I love the sound of this pedal for the type of music I play. I use this pedal in my set up along with a Mosrite guitar and Fender Vibroking amp and a EHX Memory Man.
