This was the first pedal I ever bought, and the best! Now I have a Sovtek big muff, Dunlop Jimi Wah, Digitech RP-150 and Behringer multi-fx and EQ, all between 3 USA Strats and my Music Man HD-130/210 stack (or tweed Blues Jr). No matter what I have plugged in or turned on, the Ashbass TS-9 is always part of it. It just makes the tone come to life, it's dead without it. You do get a bit of background fuzz with the first 2 knobs when you turn them all the way up, but it corresponds with a rise in volume, so you can just roll down the guitar and filter it out easy enough.

I've had several TS9's unmodded before and this one is just as easy as the others. I play with tone on 10 and level on about 5. Drive I usually have very low because I just use this pedal to add some punch to my normal sound. Very easy.

Oh yes. The pedal when I got sounded great. Just like the description on ebay said. I emailed ashbas about having even less gain and he told me to unsolder one of his added parts. That little thing made the pedal on drive=0 have almost no overdrive at all. At last! a true clean boost TS9! Undoing that part did also undo the "extra gain on 10" but I don't need that anyway. Thanks ashbass for the tip!!

This is my second one... I own two. I use it with my large road rig (see jamesallan.org) I actually use it with several different rigs and I have found it to be very transparent. I love the sound it... Not HARSH!!! That is the key. I use it with JMP, Laney VH100, Twin Reverb, and JMP-1. Just enough lowend response...not boomy.

Sound quality is what it's all about. This modded TS-9 delivers! My chain includes 3 guitars, an Ibanez AG-75 with Classic '57s, an LP Vintage Mohogany, and a 50th Anniv Strat into > Crybaby way > TU-9 > modded CS-3 (Humphrey) > Ashbass TS-9 > DD-3 > into a Deluxe Reverb RI. A little noise with the single coils in the strat, but not noticeable when playing and not bad when not playing. I get fabulous tone with this setup and the Ashbass is a big part of it. I've compared it "inline" with an unmodded TS-9DX and the Ashbass sounds much fuller, has stronger OD, and I get nice overtones with this setup.

I play blues and blues based rock, been playing for 24 years. This unit fits my style perfectly and I love it. Not for metal IMO. I would buy another if it were lost or stolen. The thing I like most about it is the tone! It is sweet and uncolored. It just adds some nice beef. I'd highly recommend this pedal. I wish it costs less, but price is fair compared to a new one. The mod isn't very expensive.........they're just overpriced when new.

I've never tried any of the other various tube screamer mods or versions out there, but this one is far and away the nicest sounding distortion pedal I've ever used. I'm by no means a pro, I just play for fun, but I can easily get a nice warm AC/DC tone, or Dave Gilmour type lead sounds. I'm using a Laney LC15R with a Marshall 1912 cab, and the tube screamer gave a decent boost to my Epiphone Nighthawk's weedy top end. Sounds best with my Dean V however, great big fat rock sounds. Love it!

I mostly play rock, sometimes veering towards metal. You'd need to combine this with some other effects to get a really crunchy rhythm metal sound, but for rock it sounds great and for lead gives great sustain without being noisy or out of control. I can't recommend these pedals enough. It's so much easier to play good guitar when you're not struggling against your gear.

The warmest, cleanest sounds you will get with a valve amp. If you just want to overdrive a clean channel or push a crunch sound that bit further, this is the pedal for you. All the dynamics of the guitar are brought out, no fuzz just raunch if you want it and singing sustain if you don't. Pinch harmonics are all there with higher tone settings. I'm using it with a Fender Prosonic (all valve boutique amp, kind of the nearest Fender got to Mesa Boogie type) which has a clean and overdrive channel. Works great with both and brings out the best in my Strat, Tele & the warmest sustain from a LP

I play blues, blues rock, country rock, heavy rock and into the shred zone. This pedal adds clarity and warmth to all the guitar/pickup/amp settings I have tried. If you are in search of tone and love that part of Santana, SRV, Duane Allmann, Gary Moore that is nothing to do with the notes they play then you will not be disappointed. Can't wait to test out every combo of sounds & licks!

A very quiet pedal, easy to dial in a variety of great sounds, from mild grind to complete meltdown. Running a 79 Gibson SG through my modded Traynor YBA-1 Bassman (Basically a Marshall Plexi circuit)the pedal sounded just fantastic, smooth distortion and gowl, yet still nicely defined at just about all settings-- not muddy at all. No problem getting that Clapton Bluesbreakers/early Cream era sound with both the SG and a Gibson Les Paul, although the Paul was definitely darker and lacking the same punch on the bass strings. This is a warm sounding pedal that perfectly compliments the EL34 tube type sound-- after a number of so-so pedals with temperamental personalities this one has been a pleasant surprise.

I admit I bought it because of the hype! Keeley was too expensive and didn't fancy modding it myself. Was ready to be dissapointed but WASN'T! Through my Strat and V2 it sounds warm, creamy and old school, bluesy enough for Clapton. I play through a JCM2000 DSL and am only using the clean settings now because through my SG this pedal overdrives plenty, more than enough for Foo Fighters and QOTSA stuff. It WONT make you sound like SRV because your NOT SRV! but it's a damn good overdrive pedal.

I've played since I was 16 or 17; I'm 24 now. What's my age again?
If it was lost or stolen I'd just buy another one; nothing else comes close to this thing's tone. I love the extra gain and bass on this thing.
This thing is muudy or dark like a fulldrive and doesn't cost $220.
I do wish the tone knob did more to shape the tone...but, i'd never dime the tone knob anyways... so i can't complain really.

I LIKE CLASSIC ROCK SOUNDS, COUNTRY ROCK, JAZZ-ROCK, _____ROCK, AND THIS WITH MY DELAY IS A NICE MIX, OR SEPARATE. THE BOTTOM LINE: MY ORANGE AMP SOUNDS GREAT WITH STRAIGHT SIGNAL OR I CAN ADD SOME DELAY OR SOME DRIVE AND IT GETS F____IN' BIGGER BUT NO BETTER (IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. IT'S NOT ABOUT THE VOLUMN FOR ME, IT'S ABOUT THE PRESENCE). IF YOU DON'T HAVE A GREAT TUBE AMP THEN I DON'T KNOW THAT THIS PEDAL WILL MAKE MUCH DIFFERENCE OVER ANOTHER..BUT REMEMBER, THIS IS MY OPINION AND NO ONE PAYS ME TO GIVE IT, I JUST DO :-). IT'S ALL INDIVIDUAL TASTE BUT THIS PEDAL IS A SOUPED UP VERSION OF THE STOCK TD-9, AND I THINK FOR THE ADDITIONAL $20 IS WELL WORTH IT (THAT ALSO INCLUDED SHIPPING).
