Quite easy to get very nice sounds out of it.

Sound Quality : 10
To me it sounds wonderful a peice i cant do without. use it in my recording rack on everything from vocals to bass and guitar. A BBE 462 with a good compressor is sort of like a poor mans mastering machine for your recordings.

Reliability : 10
Depend on it, you bet. As far as a back up yes i would i personally never heard of and peice of BBE gear go bad, probley would out last every peice of gear i have.

Customer Support : 5
I would imagine the service dept at BBE are sort of like the maytag people the stuff just never goes bad or breaks. No need to call them well i might send them a card or two to let them know that we know they are there if anyone needs them....LOL

Overall Rating : 10
I play everything from A to Z and i have been playing guitar and keybords for about 35 years. I know what i am talking about when it comes to gear. not a kid that uses his alowance to get the latest greatest cheap thing to come along.

Ease of Use : 10
easy to use low and high!!

Sound Quality : 10
sounds great to me but the thing people get confused with it is when you crank the lows and high youre not cutting mid range at all youre boosting the hell out the ends of the spectrum start at 0!!! not all knobs on 6 or 10 or whatever and ease into youre sound.it conditions low contour and the high end and it definatley sounds better in than out. if you like it it is a 10-- if you dont look elsewhere

Reliability : 10
it sits in my studio but I've transported it to a couple gigs and well' it is as solid as a house

Customer Support : No Opinion
never tried them

Overall Rating : 10
would definately but another one!!! makes more than just guitars sound excellent!!! it isnt a scooped out sound unless you boost high and low ...if you like sound enhancement then get it because you need to read the manual to actually know how to use it.I like mine and I plan on using these until I dont like music anymore (which is impossible)

Well I am just giving my opinion here but:
My gear is: Various guitars including ibanez rg/fender talon/charvel model 6 into a digitech geq-14 midi eq into digitech gsp-2101 with the other side of the eq in the fx loop. Then from there into the peavey classic 60/60 tube poweramp. I was fairly happy with my sound before i added the bbe...with the bbe on it sucks the tone...it scoops the midrange...the low end is hard to describe...but it lacks definition. Now i do what the manual says and put the bbe BEFORE the EQ. I am going to try it after eq and also in stereo mode inbetween my digitech and the poweramp...if it is not satisfactory then i will be selling this thing...

To my ears it sucks the midrange down quite a bit and in the type of music i play (80's metal) that is not so good. I like midrange so i can hear myself on stage...I hate a scooped sound.
Also it should be noted that i hate most nu-metal and this unit tends to add a nu-metal sound i think...i think disturbed uses these.
So if nu metal is your thing then by all means give this thing a try...

Reliability : 8
Looks to be built solid...it survived shipping!

I use it for a guitar rig which it says in the manual that it can be used for...maybe this thing is only good for studio use for mixing or something?

It's very useful tool. Only two knobs per channel. Bass booster and Treble Booster. Easy. Better first try bypassing the unit. Then quit the bybass and play with the knobs at 0. Put both knobs at 2 and try. Only keep raising the level at your taste. As simple as that. Don't raise higher than 5.

Sound Quality : 10
The sound is pure cristal. The clear tones sound thick and deep. The distortion tones.... this thing seems to have been contructed for metal guitarrists.

Reliability : 10
I don't think it could break.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I don't know.

Overall Rating : 10
If you play prog metal you HAVE TO OWN ONE OF THIS.

My rig:
Guitar: Heart-Art (similar to Paul Reed Smith)
Power amp: Marshall 9000 (50w+50w)
Preamp: Mesa Boogie Triaxis
Fx: Tc Electronic G-Major
BBE Sonic Maximizer
Midi Floorboar: FCB1010
Marshall 1959 Speaker Cab.

This rig, without the Maximizer sounds incredible, but with it... the sound is simply superb.

I think the Maximizer helps for building your own sound.

BBE is the best name in sound prossesors as far as i am concerned. Not only does it look real cool with the blinking lights, it has the best sound inhansment that i have ever heard.

Sound Quality : 10
we have a 24 channel Mackie mixer, it is a quite runing board already, but the BBE just made it even quiter.

Reliability : 10
i would go any where with just one, I have ran sound for my dad at his church for 10 years, and we have had the BBE for about 7 years, it has never been repaired, and has never giving any signs or any threats about giving up. and it still makes our system sound better then ever...... and did i mintion the lights??? i love lights.

I would say no matter what the case wether it be christian, live band, or keroake, or any thing music related it is the product you need, and if you dont have one, well...... you never have heard true crystal clear sound.

Two knobs and a by-pass switch. It looks easy, but it takes time to taylor your sound.

Sound Quality : 8
It is not noisy in either my guitar rack or hooked up to my home stereo. On my home stereo it is very cool. It really helps sharpen everything.

The guitar is kind of 50/50. I use it sparingly. I don't really like what it does to my clean tone. For overdrive it is much better. I am running a Traynor 2-12 and my rack of a TC M300 and BBE runs through the FX loop. It is ok, nothing great with the guitar. I could live without it, but it is useful.

Reliability : 10
Very reliable as with most rack equipment.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never called them

Overall Rating : 7
I like it for jazzing up my home stereo sound. I am in the middle of the road as far as guitar use. It works excellent with my RainSong acoustic. Not real great with my electrics clean. Better for cleaning up hard overdrive.

I chose it because it was a 2 channel unit with RCA and 1/4 ins and outs. I compare it to a parametric EQ. In fact if it was stolen, I would replace it with a parametric EQ. It kind of gets in the way sometimes.

A piece of cake. Two knobs per channel; doesn't get much easier than that does it?

Sound Quality : 10
I'm using the 482 in a typical DJ setup; I record a weekly mixshow here at home and use the unit mostly for playback. Running audio out from a Pioneer DJM-3000 to the 482, the sonic result has been nothing short of wonderful, even through the old pair of Yamaha monitors I currently have. The sound quality coming off the Pioneer board is good to begin with, but the 482 just gives it that extra little something. Spinning both vinyl and CDs, I get a nice robust low end and a sharper high end with each. No more tinkering with individual EQ bands; simply move the 482's contour and process controls to where you want them as needed. Simple as that!

Reliability : 10
Bought mine in 2001 and haven't had a single problem with it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to contact BBE in regards to the 482.

Overall Rating : 10
I'd recommend the 482 for any DJ or playback setup. As most DJ mixers these days have an integrated EQing system of some sort, I opted to skip buying a seperate rack EQ in favor of the 482, and I'm very glad I did. It's a simple and affordable sonic tool that's really put a shine in my sound system, and for what it costs, you can't really beat it.

Very few knobs. You don't need the manual

Sound Quality : 6
I'm using it on guitar. I use a Les Paul thru a Marshall JMP-1 Preamp and Marshall 9200 modded poweramp with other various effects into Marshall and Mesa/Boogie cabs. I loved my original sound but I thought if something could make it sound even better, I'm all for it. I don't agree with the people that said the 482 made their original setup sound like crap. Without the BBE I still love my sound. Basically, it does make the bass more clear and punchy and the highs clearer and crisp. It is NOT a significant difference though. I didn't notice much of a difference with the cleans as I did with distortion.

Reliability : No Opinion
I haven't had it long enough to tell but it seems sturdy enough.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Haven't had to deal with them.

Overall Rating : 7
Overall, I think it's a good addition. I would not pay $200 like the 482i new models, which are the same as the old models just made to look space age. It's just not a $200 improvement from your original sound. If you can get one cheap go for it. I'd imagine this unit is better for recording, mixing, and bass, but that's just an assumption.

I'm using a DXMG Jackson guitar with Emg 81 pickups in bridge and neck position, then a cry baby and a rp-7 digitech connected to the BBE 482 and finally a Vs230 Marshall combo.
It isn't a good rig, but the 482 makes it sound better than it is.
I can obtain a full and very clear clean tone and distortion becomes alive with this unit.

Im using this with a rocktronII hush, akg 80 wireless, 5150 head, various effects. It isnt noisey but I wouldnt reccommend turning the knobs past the middle, this really should be required, well not for guitar anyways.

Reliability : 10
I can easily depend on this, it is tough as nails.

I may upgrade it to the 482i, but it isn't required, I will only do this if I have extra money kicking around.
I havent dealt with them though, because really you dont need any support.

I play Melodic Punk Rock and this puts the sound in your face like mace.

I reccomend this to anyone, because when I first tried it, I had my amp set perfectly and didnt think I would want any improvement, but after playing with it on for 5 minutes and turning it off, my amp sounded like utter shit.

Pick one up!

The easiest piece of rack gear I'e ever owned. Only a blind ham-fisted gorilla with one leg and a tin ear could make a mess out of it. Its real nice to have the hardwired in/out to compare with. I thought I needed an EQ for my rig. The EQ I got was crap and did not do the things I wanted it for. Bye bye EQ, hello BBE you sexy piece of gear.

Sound Quality : 9
Everything you've read is true. It will do wonders for your rig, but it can be overdone too. It makes no noise on its own. My rig starts with an ADA MP-1, BBE unit, Rocktron Hush Super C, Rocktron Intellifex, Rocktron Velocity 300 power amp, and 2 Marshall 1960 cabs.I'm giving this a 9 because the process can be overdone if not set right. Basically just keep the knobs at the 12:00 or lower position and its all good. They should have named it the Sonic Orgasmatron because every time I finish playing, my knees are wobbly and I need to smoke several cigarettes....

Reliability : 10
Seems like it should last quite a long time, but if it ever did crap out on me at a show I'd be devestated. If you're totally anal about having backup everything, then buy two of these at the same time. One BBE unit should cost twice as much as it does to begin with, so why not just get two?

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with them. I suspect that BBE is a legitimate company who would stand by their products anyhow.

Overall Rating : 10
If you like muddy sounding tones, don't buy this. If you want something crisp and clear, this is it. Your pants will NEVER dry out. Also if you are honestly happy with your guitar rig, then don't even try a BBE. Because once you do, there's no turning back, and you will no longer be happy with your sound without the BBE. Some have said you can't polish a turd. Well, my philosophy is, that if you do have a turd, wouldn't you rather have that turd nice, solid and crispy when you throw it at their heads, or are you satisfied with trying to pick up a sloppy gooey one that just slips out of your hands when you go to throw it? I thought so......

Unreal! I came when I heard the difference. I have a 79 Les Paul Standard, JCM 800 4210 combo with a Marshall cabinet. My Paul has EMG 81 in the bridge and the stock neck pickup.

Easy to use - two knobs and a bypass!

Sound Quality : 9
Music is subjective, but for me this really makes my rig shine. I use a maple neck/alder body, E.V.H pickup; Mojave Peacemaker; THD Hotplate (line out to amp two, dry to g12H-30 speaker cab #1);H&K Replex; BBE 482; '73 Plexi Modded Superlead; g12H-30 loaded Cab #2. Since I have it buffered on both sides by tubes, perhaps this is why I don't notice any type of "tone suckage". It simply make chords and notes super defined and sparkle.

Reliability : 9
Never broken down on me yet - and with only two knobs on it and no need to tweak them once you've found your "zone" I dont think I'll be having any problems with this unit for a long time.

Customer Support : No Opinion
No experience here.

Overall Rating : 10
It's great for accenting that 80's thick power tube saturated sound. It allows me to get close to what the tone would sound like after it was mastered in the studio, without having to pay thousands to do it. I wish it was a bit more tweakable, like an EQ, but thats not really what its designed for so its unfair to count that as a negative. As with any piece of equipment, how you utilize it is everything - for me it plays a significant part in my tone with great effect.

Ease of Use : 10
Simplicity is beautiful. 2 knobs for bass and treble just like in the old home stereos. It's a no brainer but the sounds are remarkable.

Sound Quality : 10
The sound is superb. I use it with DJ gear and it makes a big difference when playing CDs. I use it to make the bass & kick drum punchier and the vocals come out so much more hi-fi and clearer. If I bypass the Sonic Maximizer then the sound almost sounds more like an AM radio station. I will use the Sonic Maximizer for my bass rig as well. The Maximizer will add more bottom to bass guitars with a weak bottom.

Reliability : 8
I've only owned my Sonic Maximizer for less than a month but it well built and sturdy.

Customer Support : 6
I have not had to call on their product support.

Overall Rating : 10
I love this unit because it's simple and yet the sound quality it produces is superb. I would replace this unit if I had to. I highly recommend this to bass players, vocalist, DJs. This unit is versatile. You can use it for musical instruments, on a PA mixer, studio mixing or DJ use. The price is also good.

POD Pro -> TC Electronics G Major -> BBE 482 -> Tube Works 1180 Power Amp -> Yamaha Club Series SM12 PA speakers. Definately adds presence to the overal sound. Since G Major has balanced out, I am replacing 482 with 882 next week. 482 has been working great with my rig. I sometime encounter posts by those who don't know how to use it. One guy said BBE does nothing. That's not true. BBE adds lively presence to your tone. I have pretty hifi rig and I can hear the differences. If you don't know how to set up your amp, BBE might sound strange. Then, that's your problem, not BBE's.

It's not an amp. It's not an effect unit. It's sonic maximizer. Don't complain that your solid state amp has not been transformed into high end tube sound with BBE. First you should spend money on guitar and amp. If you go futher, BBE is a good way to reinforce your sound.

i use a 5150 halfstack, like many who have posted here
jackson concept, emg 81 pickups, ibanez proline
at first i tried an eq pedal, 7 band, but it sounded way to dry, sucked tone, made it into a slayer type crunch

then i just bought this today at guitar center, used for 100 bucks( i went to buy tubes but they were fuckin 15 bucks each)

i leave both knobs on it at about 5

it sounds a lot better, adds clarity, made my clean channel better

i give it an 8 cause you gotta have a good amp to make it shine

Okay, before someone gets defensive, I have to make some key points. I've read the reviews and I think alot of things were not taken into account. Many players are playing through pretty whack rigs, except the JEM7 and 5150 user.. My point being, this device can make crap look tastey, but in my opinion, if you have a very good guitar, amp, cables, and alot of experience with tone, as well as a well-trained ear, you will not need this unit. I think it can be benefitial for mastering a home recording or for guitar-direct recording at the most. But if you want your sound, and not a processed sound, save your cash. If you have mediocre gear(typical mass-produced guitar with some kind of bass amp and a metalzone) you'll think it's the best thing for your rig. However, if you do it right and get a solid axe, a hi-quality amp, etc, your hands alone will show your tone, not some 'pushbutton magic' unit.

Reliability : 10
Don't drop it or eat it, and you'll be fine.

I know nothing about adding "effects", and I had it figured out within minutes. Two knobs per channel, and an in/out button.

Sound Quality : 9
I must say, that I agree with most of the big boy reviews - I will not be singing without this machine again. Ok, you can tweek and play with your EQ's and knobs all day long - but, I don't have all that stuff, and this machine enhances the "sound" of my simple and sweet Carvin PA very well. I'm not going to list all my fancy equipment like the other jocks, because it will do a great job with just about anything - and not just the macho equipment. The biggest surprize was the natural sound of my A/E acoustic guitar running through one of the channels. THAT was the biggest and most noticable improvement in tone. It sounded like I was not even running through an amp. As far as vocals - I do notice a clearer and more distinct definition in the vocals. ( Something most of you do not seek nowadays). It does what it promises, if you don't mush it up with that other crap.

Reliability : 9
Had it for a short time. I can't see where it would fail, unless a factory glich or someone throws it across a parking lot or over my head.

Customer Support : 9
I called two times before buying and two times after buying - and I learned something every time. I really believe that they care. They even comforted me with live advice on the hook up.

Overall Rating : 9
Read what others say; and then get one of these things. If you are new to the effects world, do not be afraid. This will enhance and clarify your vocals and acoustic guitar signal. This is the best 200 dollar upgrade in the world. Those other people are spending way more, and they are having to say they can't hear a difference because of pride. Why are you still reading?..........

I know nothing about added effects; and I had my BBE hooked up in about three minutes. It truly made a noticable improvement to my Carvin PA. I run my Taylor through a PA channel, and the added surprize was that the BBE made it sound like I was not even going through a pA; but just playing in my living room. The support at the company was very fast and helpfulin answering follow up questions. Everybody uses one of these to improve sound quality - but you.

Pfft. Two Knobs. Two Channels. Two Readouts. On/Off Switch. Effect On/Off Switch.

How ease can it get?

The Sonic Maximizer has been designed (and implemented) in consumer home/car stereo systems as well. Thus, if you're the moron who complains about not being able to hook up his/her VCR, then you're probably not involved in recording/live sound to begin with.

Sound Quality : 10

Is it going to turn a Mississippi John Hurt recording into a Mutt Lange wanker fest? Um, no.

Does it do what it says it does? Well, yes, pretty much. As far as the whole frequency distortion thing...well, true, most speakers (even expensive ones) aren't capable of producing certain sounds accurately. That's why older recordings (microphone to tape) sound distorted (high end) when popping out of your speakers. Engineers had to learn, over the years, how to tweak and twiddle to get perfect sounds coming out of those crazy cones.

Welcome to the age of home recording. I wouldn't be lying if I said that about half of the records coming out these days were produced/enginered/recorded by the artist/s. And most of these guys/gals didn't go to audio engineering school.

The Sonic Maximizer is perfect for this setting. It's not a fix all, but it definetely adds a lot of oomph...cleans things up a bit as well. I can't imagine recording without it.

Also (noticed immedietly on headphones, for those who aren't so well trained with the ears, I know that's most of you out there) there's a notable bump in the stereo range. Not really a spatializing effect. It just seems I don't know....stretch things out..and bring the mix "closer". If that makes sense.

I use a lot of 60's soul/funk breaks in my recordings (try finding a studio to replicate that sound...never...shit..try finding a drummer to play some fatback, eh..maybe a couple of Keb Darge's friends in england..but definetly no wack minded Sam's Ass employee jizzin on his double bass pedal could ever even think about music before 1989...aside from stoner rock and lame free jazz), and believe me...just running them through the this baby makes 'em sound perfect. And, mind you, I'm lifting them off misused records through a gainy shure (jukebox/DJ) stylus!

As far as sticking one of these guys in your cabinet. Eh, I really don't know. Honestly, I've honestly only used this in a studio setting, and from my experience, I've decided to only run samples and pre-recorded mixdowns through this puppy. While it cleans up some rather standard "trouble frequencys" I have noticed that while running (no, not direct) guitar alone, it goes overkill on the brilliance and pretty much strips away the warmth and body (in which, technicly it's doing "it's job"...just the wrong application), and with bass, well, I'm in no position to comment on that. ;)

note: reviewer actually noting an area where he's not auraly astute..as opposed to blaming the equipment.

Of course, the whole guitar thing is probably just the fault of the user (back to the whole "older recordings" thing that ear piercing treble is probably just due to the boys at the desk sitting at said desk too long....hearing damage my friends...combined with your brain naturally cancelling out frequent signals means: Your mix is going to be horrendously "intense"...aka..a Celine Dion record is the "industry standard" and your making the recording sound like Iggy Pop's "Raw Power".)

Oh, and one thing, to whomever wrote:

"As for the explanation of 'higher frequencies traveling slower than low ones.." well any physics student knows that all sound travels at a constant rate as do all electrical signals in the same environment. (there can be differences in frequecy signal strengths through different media but I dont think a speaker is such a medium.) And when playing live no one will notice since the acoustics of the room have much more to do with sounding muddy than this thing can correct for."

You play live, nice, why do you need a studio signal proccessor to play live? Uh huh.

As for your breathtakingly mindblowing explanation of acoustic sciences. Hmm, maybe you should go back to grade school and learn about something we like to call:

THE HUMAN EAR!

You can tell that a significant improvement has occured. Deal with it.

I leave it, powered up, underneath a DBX 386 tube preamp, which is also powered up; sometimes for weeks at a time. Oh, did I mention, by underneath...I did NOT mean in a rack.

It can stand the brutality.

It's not going to make your music better. For at home producers, you'll notice the enchancement. Remember, signal proccessors (non-effects) work best with friends. You're still going to need a preamp (no, not just for Phantom Power and guitars buddy, everything), 31 band equalizer, parametric equalizer, compressor, etc.,etc.,etc.

With only two knobs and an on/off switch, you would have to be a real moron to not be able to figure this unit out. It is very simple and straightforward, which is what I like. Too much crap in the way just gets me annoyed. It has a LO CONTOUR (bass) and a PROCESS (treble) knob, and also a push button in the center to turn the unit's effect on or off. The manual is rather vague and really only shows how to connect it...but if you know what you're doing then you wouldn't even need it. All in all, a trained monkey could handle this.

I purchased this thing for my bass rig. I play a Music Man StingRay 5-string, which sounds great alone thru my SWR 4x10 half stack. But when I added this thing to my setup thru my effects loop it gave my low end more beef and the highs more clarity. It crazy to think a Music Man could sound any better...but this unit made it possible. My tone right now is flawless. I keep my knobs set between 5 to 7. Going out of that range sounded to me to be either too weak or over-processed. Nothing sounds empty, no matter where on the fretboard I play. And most importantly, the unit is QUIET. I think all these reviews saying that simply adjusting the EQ will give you the same results are false. This unit does NOT work like an EQ, therefore an EQ can't possibly reproduce this unit's purpose. Trying to mess with your EQ too much will always leave an empty spot somewhere or you'll just make your tone very muddy, unless you have a 5,000 band EQ that covers every frequency known to man. That's like saying using more cream in your coffee means you don't need any sugar. That sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? This unit can't be duplicated by tweaking your EQ. Don't even waste your time trying. For 200 bucks...go buy a 482. It's probably one of the best 200 bucks you'll ever spend on your rig.

Well I just bought thing so I can't really make a legitimate comment here. It seems like it is built tough, but only time will tell.

Excellent!!! I had a few questions that the manual didn't answer so I e-mailed the company and got a response by the next day (it was late in the day when I sent the e-mail). I also tried calling the company, which is not a toll-free number by the way. I wasn't able to speak to someone that very minute, so I left a message for their tech dude and was called back not even an hour later. You don't get that kind of service all the time. Definitely deserves a 10.

My overall opinion? BUY ONE!!! I sincerely believe every instrument rack should have one. Bass, guitar, keys, PA, whatever...it's the best thing you can get for your money if you want to beef up your sound. I play in a cover band and have to play all different styles of music. This thing does the job for it all. It's easy to use, easy to connect, very tough to get a bad sound with, and it won't break your bank account. I compared this thing to the Aphex 204 Aural Exciter with Optical Big Bottom and I think the 482 blew it away. It has a far more natural sound while the Aphex sounded way too over-processed. Easily the most logical 200 bucks I have spent on my rig so far.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE 482 and the 362. I owned both. I agree with the other reviewers on this category...they are easy to use. Manual is a bit basic. But read on...

OK...here is where I disagree with most of the previous reviews. I used both of these BBE's on my SVT 3Pro/410HE/115E and found that I could get as good a sound without this item. I just had to use my EQ and tone controls a bit and I got the same sound improvement Especially at volume and while gigginig with the whole band. If you sit in your music store and play with this on their amp with the volume on 1 by yourself you'll think there is a tone improvement. There isn't. Play with the amps tone controls. You can get the same results...unless amp has lame tone controls. I returned my BBE's.

Looks like it is built well. Only kept them each for a few days until I realized they didn't do enough for the money.

Very good...I called and got a person to discuss my dissatisfaction with. I called when I had the 362. They said get the 482...it has the new 4th generation chip. I did. It still didn't meet my expectations. But the people were nice and responsive.

I play hard rock. I have been playing on and off for 30 years. I would not buy this item again. I gave it a real good test using good equipment including my SVT rig and my friends Marshall Lead 100 watt and 4x12 cab. Neither of us thought the sound improvement was any great shakes. Try one before you run out and buy a bigger rack.

Very simple to use, just 4 knobs and a function button.

The Sound you get from this is Incredible! I couldnt believe my ears. My amp is a Marshall TSL 100, i thought the distortion on the amp was great before the BBE, but when i got my BBE and hooked it up, it just puts my amps distortion to shame.

Reliability : 10
Its well made, just make sure you have a rack case to put it in.

Did not deal with them

The BBE is great for any style of music. If it were stolen i would buy one the very next day.
