Been playing for 30 plus years!
Don't like overdrive pedals much!
They always sound, well like pedals!
Nothing beats the true overdrive of a tube amp..................
That was before I ran across the EDGE HOG from Barber Electronics!
This is the most open and natural sounding pedal I have ever used.
I use all tube amp because I am a tone freak...And tubes are the only true buttery tone.
The Edge Hog takes that tube breakup and pushes it into the most wonderful full rich overdrive I have ever heard.
I have the unit set at 1:00 Edge and 1:00 Hog / 4:00 Bass and 9:00 Volume............The tone puts my old Fender amp to shame!
Why did the stop making these?!
If you run across one BUY IT!!!
Your tone will thank you...

It's a Barber!!!!

has edge and bass controls instead of the traditional tone control on a tubescreamer. The edge adds pressence and bite while the bass adds thump to fatten up the sound.

Sound Quality : 10
Very transparent! Has a lot of gain before breakup. It can cover most sounds in ltd but cuts through better. goes from clean boost to low gain distortion through tube screamer, hot rodded tube screamer and beyond tubescreamer, but is way more transparent and versatile. can cut through anything like a hot knife through warm butter.

Chord clarity is very good. Maybe the best of anything i have used, better than the LTD in my opinion.

As another reviewer mentioned it has an effect on mids. I think this is a possitive. It really cuts, but the bass knob ensures it stays fat at the same time, and clarity is never sacrificed.

Humbuckers and singles are equally at home with the proper adjustments to the tone controls. Equally suited to pushing an amp or creating it's own dirt. it is an overdrive no doubt, but can be very saturated into distortion while retaining clarity.

This is a great pedal for all kinds of styles and guitar amp combinations. It has a very large tone pallet and almost any player would be able to find sounds usefull for whatever they do.

Reliability : 10
It's been kicking for 8 years. i'll keep my fingers crossed.

The Edge hog has a very clearly written manual, controls are Volume , Bass, Edge (tone) and Hog (drive). This is about as simple as it gets not to mention I always like having a bass control.

Sound Quality : 9
I like the Billy Gibbons like quality this pedal has, very up front sounding with my 59' Bassman reissue and a Fender Deluxe. I can also get some great Jeff Beck sounds from the Edge Hog.I find the balance to be like vintage Rat meets TS808. This sounds absulotely heavanly with my 80's frankenstrat, my Tele sounded nice with it as well. Nice and quiet too!

Reliability : 10
This box is built like a tank, I will a gig without worry.I have a couple other Barber pedals that have been aces on every gig.

Customer Support : 10
Dave and Craig are two of those rare guys who give their time freely and have never rushed me off the phone. Dave was very promt and clear responding to a barrage of email questions about an edge Hog/Tone Pump dual unit. The best customer support I have seen.
(note about reviewer after mine, did you ever consider your email did not go through for some reason? I can't seem to get your email to work either) I say always call when emails seem unanswered by a company, I had the same problem with Fulltone not responding to an email about my 69 pedal, I called and everything was cool. Even in the year 2002 email can be dodgy with junk mail filters and such... JUST CALL IF EMAILS ARE NOT ANSWERED! much better than writing nasty baseless reviews.

Overall Rating : 9
I play classic rock/blues and some fusion and country. I have been playing for about 23 years. I play a Frankenstrat (hum/single/single) and Tele sometimes. I would gladly rebuy an edge hog if it were lost. My favorite feature of the Edge Hog is the great aggressive sound and simply controls. I will be buying a Tone Pump and possibly replacing my Ross with a Tone Press soon from the good people at Barber. I already have a Direct Drive that is my main overdrive..thanks guys!

I've had an older Burn Unit and the Edgehog and I think they are decent pedals, but here is where there is a big disapointment. I have emailed Mr. Barber once to ask him to compare the BU and the EH and no reply! I emailed him again to ask about any mods or adjustments he could do to the edgehog and once again no reply! I can understand if your busy and it takes a few days to get back to someone, but to just ignore them is not a sound business practice. I have spoken many times to Matt Farrow, Joe Gagan, Robert Keeley, George Blekas, and Bob McBroom and these guys LOVE to talk about their pedals and help a guy fine tune his sound. I bought my Barber pedals used, but I think I would be a little leary of spending the bucks on a new one with this kind of customer support.

4 knobs....mine is a "early version" (sn#0006), and like many Barber pedals, the labels are worn off...but basically, you have a master volume knob, a treble knob, a bass knob, and a gain knob....of course this is my simplified way of explaining the functions :)

its absolutely simple to get a great tone at just about any volume....

Sound Quality : 10
this thing is positively the best sounding overdrive i've ever had the pleasure of using....and i've had tons of overdrives...fulltones, menatones, ibanez's, boss's, etc...i'm always searching for the "holy grail" of tone, and for me, this may possibly be it....

my main rig consists of either a es-335 or a tele thru a fender pro jr and a supro trojan that are aby'd together...the edge hog just brings this rig over the top...super smooth overdrive that is completely natural sounding...sounds amazing with chords, as you can still hear every note within the chord. i set the gain between 9 o'clock and 12 o'clock and it pushes my amps perfectly.

if there was a higher sound quality rating than a "10", this pedal deserves it !

Reliability : 9
seems solidly built, but i haven't taken it out on the road yet...still, its well constructed, so i'd use it without a backup. i'll give it a "9" simply because its well built....

Customer Support : No Opinion
havent dealt with him, but i've heard good things...

Overall Rating : 10
i'm mainly playing original music that lies in the "alt. country" and "country rock" genre...some of my influences/favorite artists are johnny cash, tom petty, neil young, the derailers, wilco, blue mountain, matthew ryan, lucinda williams, son volt, etc....and this pedal definitely works perfectly with my music. sweet overdrive, without sounding "grainy"...

if you even "think" about stealing this pedal from me, i'll hunt you down and kill you....

the pedal is easy to use. this is a update of my last review. i have since picked up an original 4 knob edge hog and dave barber has rebuilt my 6 knob edge hog for free and refused to let me pay for return shipping...great service!!!!!!! before i could'nt get a good sound out of this, now i can.

Sound Quality : 8
the sound quality is great. at low volumes the overdrive is sweet. at higher gain settings the overdrive is rich, full of sustain, yet transparent and articlutae...i use a custom relic strat with lindy fralin p/ups, a custom relic tele with barden p/ups and a prs mccarty w/ lindy fralin humbuckers. my amps are a matchless hurricane, top hat club deluxe and a fender blues jr. my rig changes often, but now it is guitar>keeley compressor>barber 6 knob tone pump modified to original non internal trimmer specs>barber 4 knob edge hog, keeley modded baked ts-9 w/ 3x saturation or menatone blue collar>voodoolab analog chorus>ibanez echo machine> PE dual tone set as a 2 stage clean boost

Reliability : 10
very reliable. i have 6 barber pedals. they are the best boutique true bypass overdrives on the market

i play blues and classic rock. this pedal is a good compliment to the tone pump, gives more gain and a more humbucker sound. the tone pumps are the ultimate 808's with the option of more gain, is great for blues and blues rock. it is my favorite overdrive, the edge hog is great for classic rock stuff.

hard. i ahve 5 barber pedals, 2 burn units, 2 tone pumps a dual unit and this. the other rock, but i can;t get a good sound out of this and the manual, unlike barber's other great manuals is useless...

i don;t understand this pedal.i tried to use this w/ my custom strat w/ lindy fralin p/up's>keeley comp>babertone pump>barber burn unit or fulltone distortion pro> clone clone chorus> keeley ts-9/808 3x saturation> keeley ts-9/808 2 xsaturation w/ vaughn cost's dual channel mod> boss tu-2> ibanez ad-9 analog delay> top hat club deluxe or matchless tornado...but i couldn't get a good sound out of it...

i can't get a good sound out of it. if anyone has some sample settings for this please eamil me!! i asked dave barber and he never emailed me back...

i play blues and classic rock, been playing for 28 years. i own tons of analogman, keeley, fulltone, barber, diaz, voodoo lab, fralin, top hat, matchless stuff. i have custom guitars, a robben ford elite a jerry jones, tokai love rock, prs mccarty, hamer 25th anniversary...if this was lost or stolen i would not think twice about it.
i wish the manual had samole settings so i could figure out how barber thinks this should be used. the burn unit's manual is perfect. this manual is worthless...why?

Ease of Use : 9
The Edge Hog is extremely easy to use, plug in turn all the knobs on full and let er rip. Really as simple as that. It sports two channels and six control knobs; two volume, edge, and hog controls for more bite and gain. I used an SRV Strat through it and it just screamed. It would be very punchy with a humbucker equippped guitar as well.

Sound Quality : 8
Setup was a Strat through 30 watt Peavey Delta tube amp, and that's it. Very punchy and no noise at any setting that I noticed. The Edge Hog is very transparent and based on many distortion and overdrive boxes I've tried that's a bonus. Rarely does a pedal offer this type of transparency and clarity without imposing its own tone. This pedal is an excellent overdrive unit and covers any medium to low-high gain range. I compare it to an Ibanez Tube King in terms of tone but it is much clearer and transparent than a Tube King. I was looking for more of a high gain Eddie Van Halen tone and I will say the Edge Hog cannot cover that by itself, but I am keeping the pedal because it covers the Bluesy and medium gain so well. David told me that the pedal is not designed for high gain use and is more of a ZZ Top tone, which it is. This pedal would be exceptional with humbuckers and it cranks with singles. It does not saturate like I want but the inherent Van Halen tone is in there already it just needs a little nudge to go over the top. The transparent tone is there and really shimmers just like Eddie's early Marshall setups, very touch sensitive pedal. The slightest push into saturation would render this pedal king of the hill.

Reliability : 9
Build quality is excellent. Very thoughtfully constructed with only high grade components. True bypass was exceptional, I could tell the difference right away with this pedal versus cheap commercial units that suck your amp. Innovative touches like rotating battery clip show they are really thinking at Barber. As neat as a pin inside the unit. No backups necessary with this unit I don't think.

Customer Support : 10
I emailed Barber with a question about the unit's gain and received a response almost immediately, I was floored. Has anyone ever received customer support that quickly from a manufacturer, I doubt it? Barber obviously sees excellent customer service translates into loyal customers, which it does. Do not hesitate to buy a product from this company.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
This pedal covers many styles from mild grind to blistering rock tones. It is just shy of the explosive type of saturation I was looking for but with a little help can get over the top. I've been playing since I was 15 in a time when you tried not to spill the bong water and Whole Lotta Love was the hottest tune ever, this pedal can help you capture the vintage tones you remember. I would buy this pedal again and I recommend you do the same if you want transparent grind with no imposed coloration or unwanted tone, just pure guitar tone. You'll like the quality, tone, look, versatility and the way it cleans up.

Just plug it in, turn it on, let 'er rip!

Guitars: PRS McCarty, Gibson ES 335, Fender Stratocaster. Amps: Marshall 50 watt Silver Jubilee w/ Celestions, Guytron 100 watt. As you can tell by my rigs, I like it big and loud. I've never heard anything like this pedal before. The tone is razor sharp, but solid all the way until final decay - not the least bit metallic or thin. And, the Edge Hog sustains like it's a compressor - without that annoying thud on the attack of every note or the hissing between phrases. If you just want the sustain, dial back the edge knob and dial up the bass and hog knobs. Now a mainstay in my arsenal. Bye-Bye Boss CS-2!

I've only had it a month. Seems reliable, but I'll withold judgement until I've had it on the road for a year.

Been playing 14 years. Last 3 as a sideman on the east coast college circuit. This pedal has upped the ante on my sound and playing style - which is blues rock. I go for it alot more with this pedal. My tone is so much more powerful and convincing. I use it on nearly all of my lead playing now. Wouldn't plug in without it. I agree with the previous review. This pedal is the darkhorse of the boutiques.

Ease of Use : 9
I own the Barber Burn Unit and the Tone Pump II, so I'll make comparisons. Whereas the BU and TP require lots of tweaking to find preferences and understand how the knobs flavor the overall sound, this pedal requires moderate tweaking. 4 knobs - volume; edge for treble/sharpness; bass; and hog, which works like the pump in the TP. It's a boost of sorts. Manual is clear on how to use. One of the easiest boutique pedals to use and figure out.

Sound Quality : 10
I run mostly single coils - custom Strats and Tellies, with an occasional Les Paul and a PRS Custom 22. I use a Fender Bassman or a Mesa Tremoverb for the single coils and either of these two plus a Marshall for the humbuckers. Pedal is dead quiet when not in use - true by-pass. If I want, especially in transition from one idea to the next, to get a really aggressive, face blistering lead tone or cut through a mix, this is the pedal I use. With my Strats, which are already warm and made hotter by the BU or TP, think of an overdriven Robin Trower - or, better yet, a boosted Rory Gallagher on the bridge or middle/bridge pickup. With my tellies, it's Albert Collins and Roy Buchanan on the bridge. Don't get me wrong - it's nice on all pickup settings, but you gotta tweak to accomodate the selection. Plenty of raw vintage! With the PRS or Les Paul through the Marshall, it's absolutely frightening! It's so enjoyable to have the mid range of a Marshall be matched with a fierce (not thin or frail) high end without having to blast the amp's gain channel and add noise that runs wild when you stop playing. This pedal has saved this amp from the auction block. It is a snarling rottweiler. With a wah, think of Slash's solo in "Sweet Child of Mine."

Reliability : 10
Had it for a year and no problems.

Customer Support : 10
Since I own 3 Barber pedals I love, I just had to call Mr. Barber and thank him and pick his brain for tone ideas and other pedals he's considering making. It was a remarkably pleasant experience to expect some customer service dweeb and, instead, talk to the man himself. Nice guy - talented and humble.

Overall Rating : 10
With most of the overdrive and distortion pedals on the market - and amps and guitars as well - it seems like everyone is making them to accentuate and promote the mid range, to the loss of treble - especially the aggressive sort. This pedal gives back what's missing. What's great is that, for as sharp a tone you can get from the Edge Hog, it's not thin or weak; the bass and hog controls are for just this purpose. It stings, it bites, it snarls. I think that this is the "darkhorse" of the boutiqe set.
