? How easy is it to get a good sound out of it?

The unit doesn?t produce sound on its own. It is a signal processor which is very easy to set up.

? How about Editing patches?

This unit is so simple that a monkey could set up patches even with out a manual.

? How is the manual for it (if there is one)?

Not the best that I?ve seen but OK.

? Do you know the firmware revision number? Has your unit been upgraded?

Not a clue.

Sound Quality : 10
? Can you get the sound of your favourite artists? Who are they?

I am a professional guitar player and I like to create my own sounds, but I have very many favourite artists like (R. B. More, David Gilmore, Steve Luckater, George Benson and many more) and I can easily manage to reproduce their sound, but let me tell you about my gear first. A custom Washburn with to humbuckers, a Fender start 50 anniversary with Little Kill mini humbuckers and modified wiring, BOSS GT-PRO and Behringer Modulizer Pro. All this goes strait in to the front mix when I am on a gig or a concert. In the studio is pretty much the same. The only different is actually that I use a different set of patches for live and for studio.

? Are certain effects (distortion, chorus, ...) very good? Very bad?

The speaker simulator is just what I need and that?s why I bought this thing.

? What setup (i.e. what guitars and amps) are you using this with?

Behringer Modulizer Pro is what I use in order to get rid of guitar combos and speakers and I?ll tell this unit does its job just amazingly good. I can?t make a different between using a real guitar combo speaker and using Modulizer Pro 1200P. It just rocks.

? Is it noisy? On what settings?

Not at all.

? Are the effects weak or do they always sound great?

All effects are relatively good for the price of this unit.

? What amp are you using it with?

No amp. Strait in to the mix. My guitar goes in to the BOSS GT-PRO. From the GT-Pro the signal goes in to Modulizer Pro and the in to the mix.

I play virtually everything and I?ve been playing for over 35 years. If this unit was broken or stolen then I would most probably get me another one of this model. I wouldn?t replace this unit soon with something else because it does exactly what I want it to do and it is absolutely not capricious piece of technology which is very simple and easy to use. What I miss here is the possibility to use more than one effect simultaneously. If I had this opportunity I would combine the Guitar speaker with the Bass exciter (Super bass).
It absolutely helps me play the music that I want to play and make my perfect sound for each song that I play.

This unit is defiently not easy to use. Their are 8 buttons used to edit parameters, they are only labled A, B, C etc and they preform different functions in different effect patches. Unless you can remember what parameter each button changes in every effect patch, you will have to keep the manual handy when editing. There is a list on top of the unit, a lot of good it does in the rack. I had to draw up a cheat sheet to look at every time I want to edit. But the few buttons and single dial wheel make changes pretty easy. Its also not easy to get the sound Im looking for. Some of the parameters are not well explained, I usually end up just playing around untill it sounds half decent. The manual gets very technical at times, not a problem for me as I am an electronics tech but it could be a bit confusing for the less technical person, I had to read it twice.

I use mine for guitar in the effects loop of my MP-2 preamp. Theres only one effect at a time but its in stereo. The sound quality is pretty good, some of the effects could be better. But for the money it starts to sound really good. The reverb wont give a long, slow decay, only shorter or smaller room sounds, chorus isnt anything special, the flange and phase have a unique sound to them but again nothing too impressive. The distortion sucks, but there are a few interesting effects like the vintager that will add hiss and pops to recreate the sound of a vinal record. There are also some cool ring mods, a useful noise gate, compressor and a few other cool effects. There are some effects that seem to be more for auido than guitar, like the super bass, expander, exciter, imager and 3D space maker. The unit seems to be quiet and dosnt color the sound too much. But it cant compete with more expensive effect processors.

Reliability : 8
No problems with it. It seems pretty solid, but Ive seen better construction in rack units.

Never had to bother them.

Overall the biggest disadvantage is the ease, or lack of ease to use. But it does get easier after you mess around with it for a while. The effects and sound are not pro quality so I wouldnt recommend this unit for studio applications, maybe live or in your bedroom like me. The biggest advantage is the price. This is probably the best deal in effect processors there is. If you want some decent effects and quality at a low price, then go get one.

It's pretty simple to get sound out of the unit. The default patches sound pretty well when used with keyboards or other devices. The manual is pretty cryptic, especially the midi implementation. Behringer has a program on their website to control the unit remotely but it simply doesn't work. (Or I had it connected wrong) There is one jog wheel to control the value and a few buttons for perameters.

Sound Quality : 6
I use this effects processer to make noise music. I like to take simple keyboards and make them sound as harsh as possible and the unit can do that with some great effects like ringmod and quite a few of the other effects. I've used the unit with a generic 5 channel mixer and also with a pretty large PA and a computer. The output level for the DSP1200P is very quiet, so I have to preamp it.

Reliability : 10
I haven't had any problems using it at shows or for general use.

The price was the largest factor in picking up this unit, I found it for $100 through a catalog. 24 effects for $100 is a pretty good deal especially since it was new. I use it to distort things as much as possible, for example I used it with a contact mic connected to a metal bar for a live show and it sounded great. I most likely wouldn't replace it if I found a way to burn it out or it was stolen.

The midi implementation is very bad, at least the software they had on their site was. I haven't had time to create my own patches for perameters.

If you need some effects and price is a barrier I would recommend the unit.

Creating, storing and editing patches is fairly easy. It is not difficult to get some quite usable sounds out of it (including some of the presets which it ships with). However, five of the seven editable parameters (Variation, Edit A, Edit B etc) perform different functions for each of the 24 algorithms, and there is no screen reminder to tell you what each of them relates to for a given patch. That means that editing without going back and forth to the documentation all the time is less than easy.

The MIDI implementation is very poor. Non-standard control change ranges and a limited number of parameters that can be controlled via MIDI is one problem. The lack of a MIDI mapping facility is another shortcoming.

The manual goes on at length about acoustic theory and sound engineering generalisations but does not address some of the technical issues.

The flush 'finger touch' jog wheel is not an especially friendly design.

Sound Quality : 5
The overall sound quality is acceptable, and good for the price. A lot of the grunge and 'retro' algorithms deliberately introduce noise and low fi, but the remaining patches are refeshingly clean and crisp.

It is not (apparently??!!) possible to set or store the output level of each patch either via MIDI or directly. Since some of the effects provide different gain, this makes effects switching (especially live) problematic without some other unit set to tweak the gain at the same time.

When you change patches, even via MIDI, this unit gives you a SECOND OR TWO OF SILENCE before the next patch kicks in. Which, needless to say is disastrous for any live work or even real time sound changes in the studio.

Reliability : 8
The construction is robust and the unit has not shown any problems so far (though it's not very old yet...).

From what I've seen, it would be safe to use live without a backup.

Customer Support : 1
Simply awful. I emailed them about issues I was having with the MIDI implementation. They responded by summarizing my problem, but offering no solutions, no advice and no new information.

So I wrote to them again, and it's now been a number of months and I've had no further response.

Overall Rating : 3
Some of the sounds are very good and the unit is versatile, providing compression, gating, exciter, bass processing, modulation, phasing, flanging chorus etc. A good extra unit for set-and-forget applications in a low-end studio situation.

Limitations, particularly MIDI and patch changing shortcomings make it unsuitable for most live applications (and some studio work). The sound quality does not stack up against the high end competitors (Lexicon, T.C.Electronics, etc.).

For my purposes, I would be unlikely to replace this unit if it mysteriously dematerialised.
