I have no issues getting a nice sound of it. There are two knobs. That's less than three! No stereo output but I needed a nice mono chorus and this is one of the best money can buy. I'd probably laugh if I ever read the manual.

I run my 335 semi-hollow guitar into an Ampeg GV-22, a 6L6 powered, 2x12 Gemini series amp. The clean sounds are almost ethereal. My biggest love for it in leads using my Russian Big Muff to get an even thicker and cutting sound.
The speed doesn't go high at all which I think is amazing. The CE-1 was invented to simulate a Leslie but it's subsequent failure produced one of the most common effects in a guitarist's arsenal today. The CE-2 throws that high speed rate out the window and realizes it's true calling. The effect always sounds right at any setting.
Anyone who says the green label, black label, silver/black screw trash sounds better than another model is hearing with their eyes. A pal owns a black label CE--2 (I own a green) and it sounds the same. He mentioned there's an internal trim pot that does something but there's nothing wrong with the way mine sounds so I don't bother.

I suspect the Boss customer support department is in the factory helping the engineers make pedals. That way no one will ever call.

I play what I like and this pedal works in any application chorus can be used. For a used pedal that's nearly 30 years old it's nice for it to just work and work well. These choruses go for the price of a brand new Boss chorus (which are inferior) and sound much better.

Yes, easy to use...
Main reason for posting this is to point out to anyone looking for a Boss CE-2 (they are expensive on eBay) that the CE-2B Bass Chorus is just as good with guitar as bass - the CE-2B was also made in Japan, has an absolutely identical chorus circuit - except with an extra knob to blend the amount of effect and straight signal. So the CE-2B is actually better!
They really do sound the same - I have tried both side by side and hard to tell apart with the CE-2B blend knob cranked.
The main difference is the CE-2B is usually around half the price.

I have several pedals on my board and the CE-2 sits well with all of them. I use vintage Fender and Vox amps in multi-amp set up with a 1960 Strat, I place the CE-2 after trem and before delay, I have the "Long Dash" MIJ one from 1980, supposedly these are the ones to have, but I hear any of them from this era are great. Awesome chorus with a slight boost, no tone coloration of guitar. I like it much better than the original CE-1.

I got the Long dash MIJ model made in 1980, the CE-2 is more under the R than the U. This is the more collectable one. I have the CE-1 and I like this one much better, it sounds just plane GREAT. You also get a nice bump in volume and mids when engaged. Lets the guitar tone come thru in spades, GREAT chorus and I thought nothing could beat the CH-1, this pedal is awesome.

For a 29 Year old pedal it still sounds great, no hissing or buzzing and to my ears it doesn't suck tone despite not being true bypass.
I play with Telecaster and a Strat through a VOX AC30/6 Top boost.
Normally with the following set up of Boss TU-2, Boss DS-1, Boss Equalizer, Flanger, Boss CE-2, DD-2 Delay then directly into the amp.
All pedals are linked via George L's patch leads.
It's very warm sounding pedal, a pleasing sound that adds to the music instead of overwhelming it. You can go from subtle right through to crazy chorus.
Great for early Cure, Police, Chilli Peppers etc.

I play a mixture of Stuff from RHCP's to The Cure, Been playing for 10 years and I've owned a Boss CE-5, A great pedal but no-where near as musical as the CE-2.
I love the simplicity of it, two knobs and great sound - I even like the colour.
It adds to my tone and when engaged slightly boosts the sound which is a great feature.
If you get the oportunity to buy one cheap then don't hesitate and if you have cash to burn you can always buy one from Ebay.

for a 20-something years old analog pedal this thing is amazing.
very little added noise even with my p90-equipped (!!!) les paul.
no static, no crackle
and the sound character is close to perfect - to my ear
I really don't know why they don't make choruses that sound like this any more. I wouldn't call it subtle - when it's threre, it's definitely there. But it's so uniqulely musical!

I play a weird mixture of rock, prog and blues and tend to use some fairly radical effects, but this turned out to be all I ever wanted from a chorus pedal.
After I got it I sold my reissue Small Clone and a Guyatone Micro, which wasn't so bad but had this annoying volume boost.
It's great with a delay and even sounds curiously fun after an overdrive. And I power it with a daisy-chain no problem.
Listen to it, and if you like the tone, don't hesitate to buy. It'll cost you about 10 bucks more than a new CH-1 which I believe is a useless piece of crap anyway %)))

Ok for start, this pedal has only 2 knobs which are:
left>>Rate (amount of chorus you want)
right>>Depth (the area of where you want the chorus to sound more-clockwise=focus on high freq/ anti-clockwise=focus more of lower freq)
no manual cause i bought this off e-bay but geez.....who needs a manual to operate 2 bloody knobs....some retard or gizmo freak/sound engineer but def not for me.

I use a couple of Ibanez (RG570 & RG320FA>>both loaded with DiMarzio pickups). my main influence is Joe Satriani and when i observed his pedalboard and found this baby there too so the hunt began for 8 months n finally got it.
Soundwise can get pretty thick, analogy(if there's such a word XD), rich harmonics, dreamy sounds on the clean channel and this pedal has got a lot of presence when activated. Immediately recognisable when its on or off. on clean i can easily nail some Satch's chorusy stuff n to my surprise, with some delay can play Satriani's 'Brother John' tone and Enter Sandman by Metallica. On the gain channel, it gives a thick and slight flanging quality to the sound. Listen to Satriani's 'Crushing Day' open riff. definitely warmer than the CH-1's but sacrifice tweakability.
also can be used to play love songs and 80s type of rock/metal love ballads so well i just flow with the sound. i advice to play around with it more too.

Strat and PRS straight into Orange Tiny Terror and Celestions. To me this is exactly what a chorus should sound like. I don't want a deep overpowering chorus but a subtle natural effect that doesn't colour the original sound too much. This one does the job beautifully with minimal noise and tone suck (if any - I know all about true bypass and stuff but there really is very little with the Boss pedals I have used - a limited range I admit and I don't chain stuff together much). Warm and natural sounding.

You can pick these up on EBay regularly for less than the price of a current digital unit, if you get the chance to do so then go for it. Having ditched various bits of digital gear I was directed to one of these via the reviews here and information elsewhere. I managed to get a black label Japanese one on EBay in 'as new' condition and couldnt be happier with it.

Right now I in an r&b ban but I've used it for blues, rock, country, funk, punk, reggae, etc. It's a keeper. Right now mostly playing a couple of Tele's and a Strat through a couple of old Fender amps. I've used other chorus pedals but this is the one. My pedalboard varies but I always have an OD pedal and some kind of delay. The only two pedals that are always there ar this one and a tuner. If I lost it I'd buy another on ebay. This one get's a 10.

I bought this pedal from a Pawn shop for $27 because the guy didn't know what he had.
This pedal is pretty easy to use and get a good chorus sound out of. Two knobs - Rate and Depth. Pretty straight ahead. I don't have a manual and there's no need for it. This one is a Japanese model with the green tag.

Setup - 73 Ibanez Les Paul mod w Seymour Duncan 59 and Pearly Gates w 10s, 84 American Fender Strat w Noiseless single coils w 10s, Crate V32 Palomino 212 w custom mods to pre amp. Pedal is plugged into a Carl Martin Combinator with the rest of my pedals.
Sound - It can go from subtle effect at the lower settings to a nice lush deep chorus with the Depth knob cranked up. If you are looking for a fast speed on the Rate knob, this pedal won't get you a tremolo type effect.
You can use it for country / slow ballads, funk, jazz, and rock. I really like this one over the CH-1 I have.

I play a variety of styles in my band. We play soul, r&b, 50s, disco, funk, rock, latin, and jazz. This pedal has been great for all these styles.
I have been playing for over 25 years. I own Boss, Carl Martin, Aphex, BBE, RMC, DOD, Dunlop, Ernie Ball, Ibanez, Line 6, Morley, Digitech, Radial Engineering, and Rocktron pedals. Yes I'm a gear whore.
If it were lost or stolen, I would definitely be upset. This is the best chorus I purchased.
I just love the analog sound. It sounds so lush and deep. Its warm and not overpowering. The CH-1 is sterile and has a lot of highs compared to the CE-2. It has been a great addition to my arsenal.
I have tried other chorus effect pedals - DOD, CH-1, Alesis rack effect, POD, Digitech - the Alesis was the only one that is comparible. Great pedal.

I use a 5150ii half stack with a Schecter C-1 Blackjak. The pedal sounds great. I use it in my effects loop.
There are 2 reasons I'm not giving it a 10. First, it isn't the clearest chorus. But the reason is becase it's an analog chorus from 1982! Thusly, it is warm and lush, but not the clearest... Secondly, it sucks tone. All Boss pedals seem to attenuate the highs pretty good, and it is very annoying. Thus, true bypass looper!
Also, there is a very slight volume boost when engaged but not very noticeable. (much less than say a CE-5 or Ibanez cs-9).

Well, I never really loved chorus but I'll be fair anyway (or try, at least). It did sound lush and very natural. No noise to speak of. I used it with Fender Japan strat and Fender Cyclones, mainly through a 70s Vase Trendsetter valve head and Marshall 210 cab. I could emulate other artists. If you like thick, natural chorus, this is for you. if you shy away from that, like me, maybe try something more sutble, like a Boss CH-1, which is what I have gone to. Much more subtle and is stereo. (Interestingly, lots of reviews mark the CH-1 down for being subtle...c'mon fellas...horses for courses.) Anywho, the CE-2 is excellent, just not for me.

They've started publishing their manuals online (about time) but they're not especially supportive. The bossarea.com site is the best resource (but it's not run by Boss, just by Boss fans). Bossarea is very cool. Boss are fortunate that their products are such high quality, support is very rarely needed. Although, I'm sure they factored that in to their business plan...

Like I said, I cringed when I played it because it was that classic chorus tone. While I don't love chorus, if you get a chorus, this is what you expect (and, yes, I am a clown for getting a guitar pedal I didn't really like but it was cheap and definitely worth giving a go.) Great, thick tone but not for me.

Setup (I'm just getting into the effects world, but starting with the best of course). Carvin CT6M > Boss TU-2 > Morley W/V/D II > Boss CE-2 > Boss RC-2 > headphones & soundcard or cheap amp. I love this thing, if you're really into a heavy chorus it can pull it off, with a rotating speaker sound or without, either way it's pretty thick. That is especially sweet for pulling off a John Frusciante sound although he has a CE-1, which is another point to be made, I think the CE-2 has the best features of the CE-1 in a compact package from what I've heard of the CE-1. It's a truly classic effect, I'm looking forward to getting a Tom Petty sound as well (he uses one). You can get so many great sounds out of only two knobs, which is one of the best things about this pedal.

I've been playing for over 4 years, and it's truly a great addition to my sound, I love it and because of this am looking forward to getting more vintage analog effects. This pedal meshes with all styles of music, whether it's funk, rock, alternative, classic, etc. I chose this pedal after making numerous comparisons through online sounds and videos, and also played the newer pedals in stores, like the ce-5 and ch-1, those just didn't compare. I look forward to comparing it to more pedals, as I am sure it will come out on top, it has that mojo.

I bought it the late 80s and tried several times to find better pedal perhaps slightly cleaner with true bypass and more versatile but never came close to the beauty and depth of this unit. Others I purchased in my search were the H20, TC Electronics,Carl Martin. Carl Marin was the best but it was not compatible with my amp switchbone pedal. So back to the trusted CE2 it can nail the classic Robin Trower tones and does a great hidden treble boost plus a good over the top chorus but no real leslie setting. Two controls - rate and depth. Since this is a somewhat subtle effect, even full depth is not overwhelming, in fact thats where I leave mine set all the time. Set rate control to taste, to my ear it sounds best in the slow range, around 9 o'clock.

I've never cared for chorus modulation - until I got one of these. With depth set full and rate slow, it adds a something special to your basic tone. This is probably the all time champ Boss effects pedal - they really got it right with the CE-2. Of course they later had to "improve" the sound and the result was the CE-3 which sounds totally sterile by comparison. I have a Japanese black label in perfect condition and a later model from Taiwan. I would say the MIJ unit is preferable but not by much, so if you get a chance to own either one by all means don't be picky.

CE-2's add a very pleasing organic sweep to your sound. I play through the clean channel of a Mesa Express 5:50, which is beautiful tone in the first place, and allows me to set chorus, gain, and compression from my pedal board and keep a very low noise floor. It's right at the edge of distortion - amp volume does the rest. Every time I hear a jacked up Marshall amp hissing like an air hose I just smile :) I'm so glad I don't own one.

Like many Boss fans, after reading all the hype about this pedal I just had to get one, well two actually. I bought a Taiwanese version at first, was quite disapointed (ok very pissed off and certainly not the Holy Grail of chorus effects!) so I bought a Japanese version, ok slightly better - or maybe I just want to think it sounds better as I spend the extra on it, but still not what I was expecting, its a bit of a tone sucker and at the same time tends to reduce both pinched harmonics and arpegios to mud. Sorry but my Ibanez CS9 does a better job, and sounds more organic, and preserves my ??2000 PRS tone! I'm being quite critical in this review, but only becase of how much I paid for each pedal considering the performace. There are many better analogue chorus pedals out there for the same or much less money.

This is the late 70s/early 80s Alex Lifeson Chorus tone in a box. Nails that classic subtle Chorus, which is EXACTLY what I wanted. Doesn't do the Leslie thing or super extreme sounds, which is great because I couldn't care less about getting those kinds of tones. It's NOT dark, soupy, watery or overbearing like most of the botique Chorus pedals I've tried. Not metallic or thin either, just a beautiful, shimmering, pristine sound that makes clean tones sparkle.

I've been playing for 22 years, mostly Metal (Iron Maiden to Morbid Angel) and some Jazz. Most of my pedals are "botique" and true bypass, but so far nobody has made a better sounding Chorus pedal to my ears than the Boss CE-2. I tried a few other Chorus pedals before finding this one, Voodoo Lab (Too dark and only one usable setting), Fulltone (Too expensive, don't like Flanging or Mike Fuller), Home Brew (In for repairs so the jury is still out), Electro Harmonics (Too metallic and hollow), Ibanez (A 9 and 10 series, nice but too overbearing)etc. The Boss just sounds "right" to my ears, if you like that classic Rush Chorus sound then this pedal is HIGHLY recommended.

This is a subtle pedal and one of the best choruses I have ever heard. I use this through > Strat/Electra/Kramer/Carvin> Danelectro FAB Distortion> Boss Chorus> Ibanex FL9> Ibanez AD9> Ibanez Turbo Screamer> Boss Super Phaser> Boss noise Suppresor>Dunlop cry-baby> Boss stage tuner> Randall RG100SC/Randall 2x12 Cab. Silent Pedal. Through an effects loop it's less noisy ( it's not that noisy though) and from guitar dirset to amp it's more noticeable but you get that "analog scream" ( thing Prince- purple Rain solo).

I severly abused this pedal since 1982. This was my first pedal and it stopped working around 1997. I recently found an excelent Luthier and he repaired it in 2 days for $30. This was a mirical to me! Boss boxes are tough and can be used for commercial construction and endorsed by the DOT for any heavy machinery applications. An insider at Nasa's propulsion labs told me that unwanted Boss units are used as anti- heat tiles for re-enrry units. Boss pedals do suffer from exterior oxidation and this can eventually affect jacks.

metal/blues/prog 28 years - ebay sells these units for at least $120 in decent shape. I would succumb to that if the untimate sacrifice was made by this pedal. I love the subtile otherworldly-ness and organic realness of this unit. Choruses are definantly a pedal where there are differences in tastes. Do you want an obvious 1980's overload, a 1970's background flavor or a now and then swooshiness. The Boss CE-2 is classic in its subtleness and beauty. I own 15 pedals, some mentioned here and some I don't use that often and this is the classiest. I'm sorry but when it's the best, 10's are all around.

Mainly use this before a reverb (either RV-2 or modified RV-5) after distortion (modified SD-1, Fat Cat, MT-2). Rich chorus sound that can go from light to heavy. Fairly quiet for an analog pedal but it will influence tone when there are too many effects in the chain (it is not true bypass and more than 2-3 Boss pedals will make your sound a bit darker and duller even when they are off). To fix this, I use and EQ (Nady 8 band) and an EH-2/EH-50 at the end to clean up the dullness. Works very well with tremelo, especially running it before a PN-2. Overall, a great sounding pedal. I wish Boss would start re-issuing some of these classics with the exact same spec's as the originals.

Hard to kill these things. I fix many effects and the Boss ones usually only break due to botched modification or crazy abuse. Otherwise, Boss pedals are indestructable when used sanely.

I play mostly Jazz, a bit of Rock and classic rock. Sometimes I hammer out a metal riff. I enjoy all music. I've been playing for about 14 years, but only seriousely for the last 2. I have been massing pedals for a while now and mostly fixing/upgrading pedals to improve their sound. I really like the simplicity of the CE-2 and the analog tone. I also have an Ibanez TC10 and SC10, as well as a DC-3 Chorus pedals. The Ibanez ones win for deeper, stronger chorus (especially the twin cam TC10 which is useful for other purposes) and neither of them are as subtle and rich as the CE-2. The DC-3 is a very good pedal as well but a little more subtle than the CE-2. I would definately buy this pedal again if stolen or lost.

I was surprised by this pedal. After reading all the gushings on this page I was expecting some thick, swirly, detuned mayhem but the reality is that the effect produced by the CE-2 is actually quite subtle.
Nevertheless it is a fantastic effect. I am not really a massive user of chorus, but a recent renewed interest in The Police, and listening to lots of bad late 70s guitar jazz-fusion persuaded me to use it more often.
Kicking in the CE-2 with the rate at less than 10 o'clock really adds loads of presence and fullness to your overall sound, with higher rates you do get slight swirliness/detuning. I have to admit I never used it with less than maximum depth as I found this too subtle and, yes, I did play around, for several hours, with the internal trim pot to get the exact amount of 'wetness'.
My set up consists of either a Japanese 60s reissue strat with upgraded Kent Armstrong 'Tweed Tone' pickups or Gibson ES135 with upgraded Kent Armstrong PAF-style humbuckers. These go into either a silverface Twin Reverb or Deluxe Reverb via various other analogue stomp boxes.
For the record, the model I have is Made In Taiwan. I don't know how much its country of origin matters. It seems to me that those who own MIJs are adamant they are far superior, whilst those with MITs insist there is no difference. At the end of the day: if it sounds good and is what you are after, who cares with of those two far eastern islands it was manufactured on??

Great pedal. One of the best (and cheapest if you buy MIT) choruses out there.
However, I prefer the sound of my black, made in Taiwan, Ross Chorus which is much more versatile: goes from light to super-thick-nearly-flanging and rate goes much higher for fast Leslie-esque sounds.
As a result I just sold my CE-2.
Lovely sound though.

I am honestly suprised by this pedal. It was suggested to me by my guitar tech, who told me that guys like Robben Ford used this pedal not for 'chorus', but for a small decibel lead boost with a "fatness" tone boost. Being curious, I looked it up on Ebay (I am hooked-on-Ebay) and of course this lovely site, followed the models, and bought the Made in Japan black label/long dash with a black screw. I believe I got a decent deal, considering the silver screw one I was also watching ended up over $200.
Anyway, I am really a Classic Rock and Blues guy. I never liked the chorus effect; I believed it to be a really cheap sounding effect that made the guitar sound fake, ruining the tone. I probably based this on my serious distaste for 80s rock, because the guitar tones in that era were simply awful in my opinion (I really like natural tone), and the 80s chorus sound was just one of them.
But when this pedal arrived, I found some very good sounds. You can get really smooth, to really subtle, to all out tone-morhping noise out of it. For me, I cannot use any setting beyond 12:00 on the Depth, or else the tone becomes "too 80's" for me. The settings I am using now are Rate at full, and Depth at near 10 o'clock. With drive from the BB Preamp, I get a nice vowely, mature sound that gets into Jazz/Fusion territory. The sound is thick, but also transparent; not overpowering the sound, yet there. Sounds even better clean as well. There is a lot of flexibility with the sound. You just have to be a tad bit careful with overdrive before it, because it can feedback, but most often it happens with my Heritage, which can feedback quite easily at full blast since its a semi-hollow. I don't use any amp drive (I run the amp clean and use my pedals for drive/fuzz, etc.), so I don't know how it works with that. All in all, very useful, musical tones. A 9 because of lack of comparison and chorus experience by me, and because I have never heard a CE-1, the true "Holy Grail" for choruses.

I went from a chorus nay-sayer to a full on supporter (it does help that I got one of the most coveted chorus's produced). I fear that, like another poster, I may use this pedal too much! Sounds wonderful. I believe I got a really good deal for a very usable and somewhat collectable pedal; its in fact the cheapest pedal in my rig! I haven't compaired it to a green label MIJ, but will soon because my bassist wants one for himself. The only real concern I have would be with the Boss passive-bypass system, but since its the only non true-bypass pedal in my rig, I don't think its a problem. Lastly, I'm not sure if this goes for all old Boss pedals, but everytime I plug it in, it turns on, regardless of if it was off or on the last time I used it. No big deal, I'm just curious if thats normal. I might get another, probably cheaper, to check out Robert Keeley's mods, but either way this one's a keeper.

Well, here's the kicker....i got mine free from a buddy, but about 10 years ago, the thing was in a house fire. You couldnt make out what was on the outside of the effects box, but you could make out the word BOSS. Anyway, it was missing the screw, so not sure if it was silver, but its a japanese one with long dash. I took the screw out of my CE-3 japanese (they have 5 or so JC4558 op amps for your TS-9 for your information!!) and used it for my CE-2. It worked fine after all the mods. Just got some detergent, and got all the black soot off it from the smoke, and wow, it was a CE-2. I heard all the hype, and man, its the quintessential chorus and sounds great through a parallel effecs loop. I give it a 10 for reliability, cuz, well, uh,,,cus it went through a fire!!!! I rang them (01792 515023)to ask about the discontinued aca adaptors which you MUST use with the OLD boss pedals, they said "you can not buy them in the shops anymore, but they have them and will sell them to you directly 22 pounds plus postage", I live down the road a little from them, so I will call in there when I get chance and buy the adaptor(I do not want to wear out that lovely metal battery compartment screw!)
They stock a lot of discontinued bits, I may ask for one of those old unwanted ce-1 units they don't want anymore he-he.

For what I was lucky enough to pay for this "First series vintage Classic" you could not buy a poor new chorus, so I am more than pleased.26 british pounds is about $40 !!!!!!!!!.
If it were lost or stolen I would have to satisfy myself with a later Japan model at best, I do not think I would be lucky enough to find another one of this period and would not be willing to spend enough on a chorus to buy a boutique makers example.
I have heard some more modern chorus pedals and they tend to sound thinner and cheezier than this one.Honestly.

I purchased my vintage Boss CE-2 Chorus Pedal, with the Black Label,& long dash and the silver thumb screw,Made in Japan, Used, for $159.00 (plus Shipping), just a month ago, but I absolutely love it! It is one of the sweetest sounding chorus pedals ever, actually this is the sweetest of them all!It is the original version of the legendary organic swirling, syrupy chorus, and adds anything from a subtle dimensional thickening depth, to a warbly vigrato. With only 2 knobs, it is very easy to use. It did not have a manual with it, but anyone can easily set it to the sound preferred by them. My pedal has all of the original screws, rubber backing, etc.,but has some wear from prior use by its original owner, which in no way diminishes the playability of it.

I use this with my Fender Telecaster and my Fender Frontman Amp (38w amp). Since I want to emulate the sound of my favorite Blues Player, Johnny Winter, I set the Rate knob at 10 o'clock, and the Depth knob at 2 o'clock, which is how he sets his knobs on the old Boss CE-2 pedal which he still uses. It is not traditionally a blues pedal, but sounds good on the blues. However, the knobs can be adjusted to get anywhere from an organic swirling, syrupy chorus, to a subtle dimensional thickening depth, on up to a warbly, warpy vibrato.I use a Boss Metal Zone pedal for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, but this CE-2 can also be used for that type of music also. This CE-2 sounds great on whatever setting is used, in my opinion!

Although I like different styles of music, at the present time, I prefer Blues/Rock. This is a perfect match for the Johnny Winter sound which I love, since it is the same type of pedal which he uses. My favorite feature about it, is that it is so easy to use. The ONLY thing I would prefer, is that the battery wires are a little shorter than the ones in the newer pedals, and it would be even easier to connect the battery if the battery wires were longer. Nevertheless, that is just a little minor annoyance which is really of no real consequence. I rated this category a nine, only because of this one minor inconvenience. I really LOVE this pedal, and do not plan to ever part with it!!!

I own the Tawain model (latest). I had trouble using a regulated power supply (modern powersupply). So I had my pedal sent to Robert Keeley @ Keeley Electronics to have the HI_FI mod done.
It not only corrected the power supply problem but the tone of this thing is nothing i have ever heard. Oh yea, lush organic tone. I have a hard time not using it. I sounds very real, not digitally fake. It really meshes with your guitar tone, as apposed of adding on top of it or taking away. It does boost a little, but who doesn't want that?
The pedal was great before the mod, but i would highly recommend the mod. I would probably go insane if I put one of the these things before a tape echo unit.
Oh yea don't buy into that hype about the different labels on the back either. Like i said I have the green label tawian unit, and it sounds the same as the others to me.

Lush. Rich. Sparkles. Definitely analog. I've heard a couple of digital models of this pedal, and none of them come close.
An interesting effect, in that it is -- in fact -- a Chorus Ensemble, not a pure Chorus.
I was so curious about what gives this pedal it's unique sound, so I plugged a scope on it and reverse engineered the effect.
The answer: it's two short delays (about 4 and 7ms), and two swept delays in opposite phase that sweep across the delay rails. Why this works is a mystery to me, but the sound is stunning. Pure magic. And you can't replicate this sound with a more conventional chorus.

I've just recently switched over to a multi-effect unit (a GT-6), but I still keep this pedal in the effect loop, because there is no substitute for the sound of a real CE-2. Allegedly, the GT-6 has a CE emulation, but it doesn't compare. The Line-6 Modulation Modeller also has a CE-1 emulation, but the non-virtual CE-2 is better than the Line-6 CE as well.

i use a few old tube amps with this pedal, also other pedals that i use with it are boss tu-2, dm-2 , modded sd-1 and sometimes another ce-2 or a dc-2.
if you use tinny high gain amps, you will get a mild hum/buzz.
i get no sounds that i dont like.
this is a strong effect, in that its thick.
I dont use this pedal as a chorus, rather, i use it like a tone 'conditioner'.
i set the rate all the way down, and the depth all the way up.
Hard to describe the effect here, its like it makes the signal 'glow'...it also has this swirly slow thick sound to it, which is the best thing actually.
this ones going to be an expensive classic soon, whichever one you have.
I have one of the original long dash silver screw ce-2's as well as a two japanese green label ce-2's.
The differences are interesting.
The long dash ce-2 has i. an NEC 4558 op amp
ii. a different casing. it has a thicker case, as well as a differently moulded battery compartment from any of my other boss pedals (i have about 25 of the bastards). It also has the siver metal battery compartment screw.
iii. the serial number is stamped in red ink right next to the switch, in the battery compartment.. the serial of the long dash is a very low 200.
iv. a different logo. the silver screw also has a longer dash in the logo.
The most important difference here folks is of course the op amps.
the other differences mean nothing except for maybe the thicker casing which will alow you to run it over with a hummer.
the japanese green label has a jrc4558dd op amp.
on a website called www.modezero.com , there is a ce-2 long dash with its guts spilt out, and it too has an NEC 4558 op amp in it.
keeley modifies these pedals. One mod that he does is to put burrell brown op amps in them.
i would never get this done to my ce2's because ,again, it makes them clearer, more hi-fi.
for me, the beauty in these things is that they THICKEN the tone, not thin it out just like all the shitty digital effects do. thats right, every single digital effect ive ever heard thins the tone.
it seems that with these pedals there is always some kind of bullshit hype. and of the course, the oldest one is the best one blah blah ....not in this case folks. if you after a nice thick lush tone, the green label is the hands down winner.
the long dash has more of a hi-fi sound (thinner, yet clearer ). It sounds more like my dc-2, although not quite as 'hi-fi'as the dc-2, which i feel is the chorus's chorus, the king of em all.
there has been some talk regarding the trimpot, but depending on which op-amp you have, the effect the trimpot has less or more impact.
if you open your ce-2 up and turn the trimpot all the way clockwise, and then back it off just a bit, you will find your sweet spot.
Again, depending on which op-amp you have, the trimpot will have more or less of an effect.
This pedal folks is an analog as it gets.
the current trend that sees old analog pedals getting top dollar isnt just because of the romance of it all, the old pedals have a thicker tone, they are much much sweeter than new pedals..another good one is the dm-2 delay.
get one.

Very easy to use - only two knobs. However, I got the Taiwanese model. Being (1) the picky person I am and (2) wary of the current state of the pedal since I bought it very used, I wanted to mess with the internal potentiometer to adjust the sound. Didn't end up changing it by much, but the fact that I had to think about messing with it was a slight negative.
Sound Quality
:

Very quiet - it doesn't add any noise that I can detect. One thing that I didn't like about it is that it seems to distort high level input. I have a Fender guitar on which the pickups tend to be pretty hot. There's a bit of distortion when I turn the CE-2 on, but usable. Going through my Stage 185 amp it's almost negligible. The cheap Kustom I sometimes use doesn't like the high output very much.

My music is a combination of '80s new wave and Nirvana-like modern rock. It works well with that. I've used the EH Small Clone several times and I didn't feel like it had any significant "magic" that the Boss CE-2 didn't have. I'll definitely be keeping it for a long time.
It's vintage, so you have to live with a few obvious issues related to age and wear. Other than that, it's good.

gibson sg standard> boss tu-2> boss-dd6> boss ce-2> bbe 360 sonic maximizer. no noise. i plug everything into a furman power conditioner. i have yet to find a bad setting. the chorus is very thick and warm. no overwhelming shwooshing noise. i have had many chorus pedals. some that cost around $300.00. this 29.00 used box is better than anything else i've tried. full tone, mxr, boss ce-5, eh poly chorus reissue. I could never get the chorus i was looking for until now. this pedal accentuates your sound. it doesn't take it over. sounds good on most speeds.

hi -fi ish.
i use this pedal with a blackface bandmaster and a marshall jcm 900.
difficult pedal to describe..i have a ce-2 chorus, which is amazing. The ce-2 is thicker !
but the dc-2 shouldnt really be compared to other pedals..its kind of on its own. Im very glad to own one of these little purple gems.
sometimes i play with it with the first button pressed down all the time. sometimes i kick it in with the third or fourth button pressed.
this pedal is three d. its lush, it shines..really, its more than a chorus. i reckon this pedal is very special indeed.
the effect is much more obvious in stereo.
i havent been very helpful here..try and get to hear one somewhere if you havent got one.

Pretty damn easy. I mean, speed knob, depth knob and a footswitch... If you've got problems using this pedal, I feel for you. The only reason it doesn't get a 10 is because I had kind of a hard time popping the footswitch open to get at the battery plugs. You've got to use some little pointy thing to push a latch and then it pops open.

Not THE BEST chorus out there, but for the price it's going for I'd say it's got the best sound/price ratio. It's a nice thick chorus with just the right amount of swirl to it. The reason I don't absolutely love it is that it's a bit of a cold sound, not very tubey like I like, but it's more than useable. My rig is sort of a keyboardist guitar rig. Rhodes Stage 73 -> Phase 90 -> CE-2 -> TS-7 Tubescreamer -> Twin Reverb. I also want to mention that this chorus sounds awesome with the phaser. For heavy-metal players, this is the perfect chorus to go with heavy distortion. It's really clean, really quiet (noise wise) and doesn't make a pop when you click it on.

I have one of the Japanese black logo silver screw boxes Panasonic MN3007BBD/MN3001driver circuits. When it was first given to me, I was a little disappointed by the lack of depth provided by the unit as I was used to more modern swirly digital chorusing. As it is an analog unit, yes, it is not the quietest thing to grace one's pedalboard, but not any noisier than the average tube amp, and definitely not distracting when perfoming or rehearsing. It has since grown on me quite a bit since demoing it with various other guitar/fuzz/amp combinations (the taste buds in my ears have improved as of late). Clean, it is a gorgeous doubling effect that turns a single guitar into a three dimensional wonder. Dirty (via a homemade NineVoltNirvana Skyripper>CS-2 into an Ampeg VL-1002), it really provides a Robin Trower-Esque tone (think the song "Bridge of Sighs"-I know, he recorded it with an RM Univibe-a subtle phase shifter, but it amazingly does it convincingly). All things considered-it's so very swampy and dredgy at maximum depth and slower speeds. I only recently heard (in this very string) that Andy Summers and David Gilmour also used this on certain classic recordings. Stylisically-I love blues from deep space. I keep the speed about 11:30 and the Depth dimed. Considering my uses of this box I feel with all of my heart that it is indispensible to my sound/playing tastes. Choruses are not supposed to sound like Leslie tone cabinets-do not ever expect one to do that trick. Having logged many hours with a 147 Cabinet, I don't ever let my expectations make me think anything would sound like that than the real acoustic Doppler Effect. At faster speeds, it does the "Come as You Are" trick-as previously mentioned. I have heard that Mr. Keeley provides a mod that makes it go even faster than stock. I'll give it a nine-when engaged, it shaves a bit of your top end- I dont know of a BBD based unit that doesnt.

I had a CE-5 before this but when i got my CE-2 i compared them and banned the CE-5 from my pedalboard PERMANENTLY. It really blends in your sound and sounds so warm i almost burned my ears!!! THe CE-2 is a basic mono Chorus pedal that features RATE/DEPTH knobs. Not very complicated to use, just simply tweak to own desire. The only thing is unless you go the 12oclock/3o clock/9 o clock/full up route with these pedals you might have to make tick marks if you want something in between these settings cause the knobs are very sensitive and move easy if bumped.

Okay....over the years I've own many different "incarnations" of this pedal. for those who are familiar with this chorus, it has been reissued a few times until it was discontinued in the 90s for reasons I'll never know since it's probably the best sounding and most practical chorus unit out there. i've owned quite a few (4 to be exact including the one i'm currently reviewing) mainly because after i got rid of it i opted for other chorus units. However i came to the conclusion that this is the best one out there as it is prevalent with many guitarists, especially thru the 80s! Now I recently picked up an original CE-2 with a long dash and the silver screw! I found it for a fantastic price although it wasn't in mint condition. Anyway there are many rumors regarding the different tone ranges of these pedals, right? well after owning all 3 different Japanese models I can honestly say the differences aren't very extreme but to those who are after a certain tone they in fact are!
JAPAN GREEN LABEL: Nice chorus, but very thin sounding and the oscillations aren't quite as smooth as its predecessors
JAPAN BLACK LABEL/Plastic screw: Better sounding indeed, smooth oscillations. Very lush, however transparent still. Most prevalent on 80s guitar though.
JAPAN BLACK LABEL/long dash/silver screw: Hands down beats them all! Very lush, smooth oscillations, so thick it's almost flange like! Can pretty much rival the tones of the CE-1 chorus ensemble.
Now i know people mentined the internal trim pot. however I have fiddled around with mine on other models and didn't do much for the overall sound except increase or decrease the "dryness factor" like a mix knob to my ears.
I think the reason why the earliest model is the best sounding pedal is because this was when Roland started manufacturing BOSS effects (OD-1, CE-1 Chorus Ensemble Phase Five) Even the lettering is different than on later models (thin font like the Roland font coincidentially) It may sound pointless but the theory is that Roland as everyone knows produced some of the most lush and trippy chorus units (Dimension D, the rackmount unit and one of the first chorus available w/4 push buttons) The earliest CE-2s were produced in the late 70s before BOSS became a primary manufacturer of effect pedals as it is today. Those earliest CE-2s sound like a portable pedal version of the lushest chorus units offered by Roland, hence why they are so good and most saught after. I am very sensitive to tone and If I didn't think there was a difference in such versions I wouldn't even have wasted my time typing this. For those looking for a good chorus sound really any of these CE-2s will do. but iif you're after a certain tone, the earliest models are worth checking out. They're getting harder to find though and I was lucky to find one at a price that didn't break my wallet cause these mint can go for $250! $90 if you're lucky. Mine was put through its paces but really isn't that beat up and it sounds great and that's all that counts.

I play soulful blues/Rock. My setup as of now is a 1952 Telecaster repro into a Fender Blues Junior, and will grow on as i grow older, lol! As I said any of the CE-2s are great sounding Choruses that are very simplified and compact and have a nice baby blue color to boot! Compared to other units vintage and modern like Voodoo lab, EH, Visual sound, etc. This mono chorus is still reigning king to those concerned! However if you're lucky enough to find the earliest models and hopefully at a price in your budget then go for it! It you're a tone fanatic as i am, go for it! It's worth every penny. as I said on a previous review I have a Caesar Diaz (moment of silence) Texas Tremodillo that I run in front of this, and you'd be surprised at how this makes your guitar almost sound like you're playing through a slow moving Vibratone,(If you close your eyes and have a highly overactive imagination, hehe). For Psychedelic fun play around with the tremodillo or whatever trem unit you have and you'll be amazed at the trippy tones without having to drop a hit of owsley! If you're lucky enough to own a vibrato unit, you'll be gone man! I'm awaiting my Austone Vibro stomp and when i get it and demo it, I'll be posting on that as well, CHEERS!

This pedal sounds great! Not noisy at all... When using it in clean mode, sounds like the Clapton/Eric Johnson "sofisticated" clean tone. Really beautiful! Jackson KV1/Fender YJM Signature Series>Samsom Wireless>Rocktron Banshee>Crybaby Wah>Boss CS3 Comp.>AMP (CE-2 in Amp loop)
ATTENTION!!!! I've read some reviews about the Taiwan/Japan question. My CE-2 is japanese. I don't know the tone of CE-2 from Taiwan, but I must share one experience I had: I bought the BF-2 Flanger made in Taiwan. Sounded a little "poor" for my expectatives, but ok. Later, I saw on a store the same pedal (BF-2), but a "vintage" japanese ones. When I tested.... WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!! NOT a small diference, but the japanese pedal was SEVERAL TIMES BETTER!! I can't say about CE-2, but about BF-2...

Very little noise. It IS analog so there is a certain amount of noise associated with it by this virtue, but comparatively little. This is a 'warm' mellow chorus. It is not an extreme pedal and it is not a digital pedal. If you are after either of these things then this isn't for you.
I enjoy the sound very much - just to add something to a nice clean sound it is perfect. Don't get me wrong - the speed and depth available is quite adequate but not as much as some others.
I give it a 9 because it can get SLIGHTLY muddy and less effective with a humbucker's tone control too far down, though that's to really much of a problem.

In the end, this pedal does exactly what it sets out to do. I like my effects to be subtle and add a little something 'special' to my sound. I can see where a crystal-clear, sterile chorus could come in handy but that's almost a different effect.
The only thing I would like is for this to have stereo out, but it's not really a majoy concern for the moment.
The bottom line is that you can pick up one of these fabulous pedals secondhand for $100au. Now that is amazing value.

I got two of this miracleboxes; one made in Taiwan and one made in Japan. As some other users said before this unit can be tweaked with an internal trim pot (perfectly described in other reviews).
My both units both sound exactly the same, so I guess the reason why (so I read) some taiwan units are inferior to Japanese ones is indeed just a matter of inferior tweaking in the factory. Take some time and patience with the trimpot and use yer ears and you'll find your sweet spot.
Yes it adds noise, yes it is vintage, yes I can live with it.
I use this things with just about any guitar and effect-amp combination. Haven't come across a bad sounding combination yet.
It is a vintagechorus, but incredebly versitily with just two knobs. I own some chorus pedals ans digital gear and nothing beats these fellows when it comes to thick sweet utra smooth warm natural chorus. Still lookin for a CE-1, so I can't compare, but if Andy Summers used these things in his Police days, they can't be that bad.
I also read someone advising not to use them with distortion.
Personally I advise the opposite, using chorus on distorted sounds will always be a matter of personal preference, some can't stand it, some can't play without. Having experimented with a lot of chorus- distortion combinations I like the CE-2 a lot for this purpose. It perfectly blends with distortion in a very organic way. It becomes one new sound rather than one one top of the other.
I give it a nine but just because I read they won't accept halaluja revieuws, but this happens to be a halleluja machine. Ok; -1 for backgroundnoise since they insist.

Using this with MIJ Squiers and an Epi Les Paul through a Deluxe90 or a Blues Jr. I tried this with a weak battery and thought I hated it, so I put an adapter to it and it really sings. It's a very thick warm sound, and works pretty well with distortion. I nailed Scofield's "organ warble" sound and some Cyndi Lauper guitar tracks. It's really cool, but it's not a "flashy effect" effect, it's more of an ambient effect. I like it when used with delay afterwards so the rises and falls are echo'ed.
Overall, it's a nice old school chorus that isn't as offensive as many chorus pedals.

This effect is not noisy (maybe a little hum, but nothing serious. After all, it's analog). It sound just great. I only have this little box for a few hours now, but i really enjoy it a lot. It's my first chorus, but I remember playing with a guy who had a newer BOSS chorus, and it to come close to this CE-2 at all. The effect is very warm and subtle. It gave a nice flavor to your sound. If you are looking for a extreme chorus, look somewhere else, but if you are loking for a nice and warm chorus, that's the thing.
By the way, I don't know if it is really different, but mine is a Japanese with black label and metal screw.

My setup is: RG550, CS-2, DS-1, GE-7, CE-2, a delay and some other pedals...
A very analog, warm tone, swirling around my ears...
I've got also a CH-1 but, of course, CE-2 sounds more warm, depth and natural. New CH-1 Super Chorus are really cold...
(beh, suono con una RG50 Ibanez, piu i suddetti pedalozzi;
il suono del CE-2 e molto caldo e analogico; ti circonda proprio le orecchie...
ho anche un CH-1, ma e piu freddo e meno profondo del CE-2...)

When i first began gigging in about 1980, the CE-2 was my 1st chorus. Back then there weren't but maybe 2 or 3 options for chorus pedals, so i didn't know what was good or not. In fact, at that point my ear wasn't nearly developed enough to know what was good or bad as chorus pedals go. But i sold it after a couple years and got an Ibanez, then sold that, etc etc.......had probably 10 various chorus' since then. My memories of the CE-2 were that it may have been better than all of them, but you know how old memories are. I didn't know if these were just fond memories or if it really was the best i'd ever had.
Well, i just bought my 2nd CE-2 some 23 years later and i now know without a doubt those memories were accurate. Actually, i played a friends CE2 a couple weeks ago which made me realize what i'd been missing all these years, so i bought one. I should never have used anything but the CE-2 !! As others have said, it's just so mello, round and round without a trace of obnoxious high end. It's subtle, but it does exactly what a chorus should do with no unwanted artifacts.
If your tonal tastes are refined, this chorus will satisfy you better than 95-99% of whats out there.

Apart from the MXR Micro Chorus, which only has one control, the Boss CE-2 is literally idiot-proof. 'Rate' and 'Depth' controls enable you to get a myriad of chorus tones out of this little box.

My set-up is straight forward. The signal goes from my guitar(s) through my effects into the amp. The CE-2 can be noisy when used with distortion, but that's just the analogue character of the unit. I mostly use it with a clean amp tone. The sounds are very enveloping and rich, no matter how the effect is set. I'm using an all-valve, hand-built amp, and I like to run a Boss CS-2 Compressor in front of the CE-2 to produce that cluster-like chiming sound. The compressor gives the chorus a sweet shimmer without making my tone pokey.
The guitar player that immediately comes to mind when I hear the CE-2 is Andy Summers (The Police). He was one of the first players to bring the chorus out into the spotlight. I think he did that because he was the only guitarist in the band, so he needed to broaden the guitar sound to fill in the space. The CE-2 just has that sweet character about it, that boxy chorus sound. It's a sound that I've heard on so many records, so it was impossible for me to resist the temptation of getting one.

This box is actually a 1979. It has the black label on the back. Apart from a few paint chips, the stompbox is in a great condition and hasn't failed to function perfectly. It wouldn't be hard to find a backup, because I have seen a few of them floating around. But if for some reason it would go down one day, I would get another just like it. They're just too irresistable.

I play in various cover bands. The great thing about the CE-2 Chorus is that no matter where I need that sound, it always cuts through. You can always hear its distinct character, even when playing in a band with lots of other musicians. I wouldn't want to change anything about this little box because its simplicity is what attributes to its charm. I think that no matter how many chorus effects are out there, the CE-2 will always remain a true classic, just like its older brother, the CE-1.

I don't particularly like chorus as its too "tinny" in general but I got this pretty cheap and I'm not real enthused about my Boss CH-1 or Danelectro Cool Cat or POD. So I'm not the best source for chorus info. I DID however, try tweaking my Taiwan CE-2 interior pot and I want to verify that as previously stated, the best, round-ish tone seems to occur when rolling *back* the interior pot. For my box, I rolled it back between where it was set(12:00) and where the effect turned off(8:00). For those time-challenged, that would be 10:00. ;)
My test equipment was on a cheapo strat copy into the CE-2, into a clean digicrap amp in the theory that if I can improve *that* mess, then I've achieved something. However, the change is really, really slight at low volume. However, I have pretty good ears for tone so it is real. But I can't tell you exactly what changes though it appears to be a background phase timing. Line it up and it warms up a bit. Crank it up and you get crystal mush in really small amounts. But tech-head tweakers live for this stuff ! Enjoy !

Someday I'll hear a smooth, clear, analog chorus and fall in love. But not with any crystalline icepicks digging into my ears, and the CH-1, POD, Cool Cat and CE-2 don't seem to avoid that without eq in my (limited) experience. But the CE-2 isn't bad relative to the others. And, hey, BONUS ! You get to tweak it to your hearts content !

Very good for a two knob pedal !! Chorus is very lush and spatial, when you dial it up to 12 on the rate and 3 on the depth, it's a tremendous and wonderfully thick swirly tone. Not quite as obvious as some of the early 80s high chorused sounds, more of a subtle tone expander. After having read some of the notes here about the internal trim pot, I'm excited about having even more range to work in !!!!

First, Trim Pot notes: This is a green label Japan version. After reading the threads here, I wanted to boost the trim pot. Sure enough there is was, complete with blue glue on it. Once you break that seal, it turns freely. (I recommend needlenose pliers to initially twist through the glue, on the square top of it. None of my 12 Craftsman screwdrivers would fit right and plastic was soft. Careful on the initial twist!) Turning it all the way clockwise gave me no sound at all and I thought I broke it. Dialing back just a tad gave me the sound though. In total it was about a quarter turn. Tried a quarter back as well which diliuted the effect to about nothing. So what do you get with this? It's not "night and day" like I expected. I just gives you "more effect" so the depth knob goes further, more range which is obviously a good thing. Now full depth for me goes just to the point which is "too much," so I know I have full range of what I would use. It's almost like a Flanger at that point. I read some commenting on a rotary simulation with this pedal - I don't hear that myself.
I'd probably be more excited about this pedal if I had never heard stereo chorus, but I don't have a stereo setup, so... But I can recognize that is does sound really good for mono. I would probably buy another if lost at this point, because I'm not going stereo and I don't know of anything that would be better.
For me, I'm a 20 year player, little bit of everything. Modern Rock, SRV, classic rock.

I actually have two of these CE-2's. My first one, which incidentally is a Japanese 'green label' one, I've had for about 2 years. The second one - a Japanese 'black label' one, I just got very recently. Why two? you may ask. Because I picked up the black label one for dirt cheap in a cash-converters shop and I wanted to see for myself if there was any truth to this label-colour superiority debate.
So after doing a half-hours work of AB'ing the two, I have reached this conclusion: YES, the Japanese black label is smoother and more articulate than it's Japanese green label sibling. BUT, the difference is *very, very* slight. Perhaps a comparison with a Taiwanese CE-2 may have brought a more dramatic outcome, but unfortunately I don't have a hold of one. Were I to score each pedal separately:
Japanese Green Label - 9/10
Japanese Black Label - 9.25/10
Simple as that.
The sound of both CE-2's is very liquidy and can be altered to be as subtle or strong as you like. IMO the chorus sound compliments a clean sound much better than either an overdriven or distorted tone. Some words I would describe the clean CE-2 sound are lush, dynamic, and full. When used with overdrive/distortion, the chorus effect is not as noticeable but it thickens up the tone quite a bit.
Right now the CE-2 sits at the second last spot in my effects chain: VOX wah --> DS-2 --> CE-2 --> DD-3. Use it as late in the chain as possible. Settings I'd normally use it at would be Rate at 11 o'clock and Depth at 12 o'clock. Nice, subtle effect. It can become extremely swirly and watery when turned up full on both settings, which is cool in itself but personally I can't really find a realistic use for it. The noise level is very quiet to the point of unnoticable.
I cannot compare this pedal to any other brand's/types' chorus because I haven't heard any other with my own ears - the CE-2 is the only chorus I've used as yet - but I still thoroughly recommended it. So if you see one, just grab it. They aren't made anymore and judging by the trend, they'll become more and more desirable for guitarists.

Only decided to write a review to share my thoughts and personal experiences in having two versions of the same type of pedal. Hope it helped any of you out there who have also been interested in the CE-2 and/or the ongoing debate of which one is "the holy grail" version, so to speak. Both Japanese versions are excellent, don't know about the Taiwanese one because I haven't heard it.
If they were lost or stolen I would be sad because of the mere fact they're hard to get a hold of these days. But if I saw one I'd buy it straight away. I love the subtlety of it with my clean tones. It's there if I want it to be. To me it's a great little pedal and I think it's a very good reason to why it's becoming (is?) so sought after.

I got years of experience with the CE 5 and the Roland JC120. I prefer the JC120 over the CE5 and CE2. But . . . . the CE2 is coming closer to the JC120 than the CE5 does. It's a shame u can't run it stereo, since any chorus sounds better stereo. That's the major difference between the JC120 and the CE2 i guess. The JC120 is stereo. Apart from that they sound pretty similar. I'm running it through my Mesa Boogie Studio .22. It works great with that amp. It's subtle but present. It blends in very nice with the sound of the amp. With the JC120 there is a abrubt change in sound when u switch of the Chorus. This is not the case when i run the CE2 through the Mesa. It works great with the distortion of the amp. Very smooth.
Oh, before i forget. Use a battery or get the right adapter. This thing sounds like a distortion with a AC adapter. U really need a ACA adapter.

The CE-2 is pretty straight forward as far as controls go - rate and depth is all you get. Luckily, with this pedal, it's all you need. I usually set the rate somewhere between 10 and 11 o'clock, and the depth at about 4 o'clock and it sounds great.

I have Gibson, PRS, Fender, and Washburn guitars and a Peavy Transfex Pro 212 amp. I use the CE-2 in front of the amp along with a Dunlop wah, an Ernie Ball volume pedal, a Danelectro Hash Browns flanger, and a Ross phase/distortion pedal. I haven't found it to add any noise to the signal when the effect is on or off. The chorusing that this pedal produces is thick and lush, but not overwhelming and it sounds good on clean and overdriven amp settings. It is easy to get sounds similar to Rush, King Crimson, and the Police with the CE-2.

Although other units have been more versatile, this is the one that SOUNDS the best to my ears, and I really do like the simplicity of it. Very good, I like it a lot. I've seen people write it's noisey, well I use my fair share of gain and I don't hear anything in the loop or in front of the amp. It is lush and fat. The Perfect sound with tube distortion. Not noisy, and it is easily the best chorus pedal I have ever played/owned. Anything I have compared it to seems to fall short. I run a 69 Guild Starfire V Lefty or an 89 heavily customized Yahama Lefty with Duncan humbuckers through a Blackface Bassman head to either 4-10 or 2-12 cab, a TS-5 tubescreamer and the CE-2. -Thats the whole set up. Hence I play mostly blues style music, though some jazz and rock are also in the bag. Been playing for 12 years and I'm still refining my sound and trying not to sound like SRV. I have a Green label CE-2 from Taiwan and don't plan on messing with it as it has always sounded superb to me. Even recording through an original SansAmp, the CE-2 only enhances my tone. I would highly recommend the CE-2 to anyone. It is foolproof and bulletproof. If it was seperated from me I would most likely sell my stereo and try to find a VB-2, to see if they live up to the rep. Remember we might play other peoples songs, but try to play them as if they were as original as we can hope to be. Peace.

Just got this bad boy about 1 hour ago. Wasnt all that impressed at first. Then I opened it up and tweaked it like the nice people below said to do. I lined up the blue glue (goo?) that the other guy below mentioned and voila, 10 times better. The pot inside seems to be a gain pot or something, because it increases and decreases the effect. Too low and the effect is almost clean, too high, and it breaks up when you play loud. Somewhere in the middle, you are good to go. Full chorus, and no break up. Ill give the sound a 9, because I wish the rate would go faster like a small clone (which I would also like to try), but this sounds pretty durn good. I have 2- CE-2,one Japanese and the other Taiwan.
The Japanese is the of the first/earliest period, black label,
twin cavities in the battery compartment, with battery wire coming from
thumbscrew end and serial #9000.
The Taiwanese CE-2 is the green label/last period.
I have spent hours testing and comparing the two CE-2 against each
other.
The CE-2'S played through - Roland JC-120,Fender Rivera Concert,Fender 65 Twin Reissue,Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue,and Tech 21 Trademark 10.
The guitars used Ibanez Iceman,63L series Fender Strat,62 reissue
Fender USA Telecaster and Gretsch White Falcon Jnr.
Both pedals running on power adapter not batteries.
Even blindfolded myself and got wife to help in test.
Final test done through Trade mark 10 with headphones.
DRUM ROLL.................................
And the winner is...........................
Fucking both.
They are identical in sound,no differance whatsoever.
I was so pissed off, because i was from the old school, that Japanese
BOSS were superior to Taiwanese.Maybe in other Boss effects it is
true but not between these CE-2'S.
The joke is i bought it new in 82 and never knew you could open
it up and tweek the depth of the chorus to maximum.
(In the test i put them both full and midway before the effect cut
out.)
I always knew that the CE-2 was better than my CE-3,but not the same
as the highly underated BOSS Taiwanese model.
(Just for the record, the CE-3 is a piece of shit, lacks sparkle and
brilliance of CE-2,but i also bought this new in 83(BLACK LABEL-JAP)
so i could utilize the stereo effect).
BOTH CE-2'S SOUND GOOD,BUT DON'T FALL FOR THE EBAY/COLLECTORS HYPE.

I've had this thing for quite a while, so it's seen many musical styles, from Metal to Jazz, and Punk to Folk... and anything else in between, it's very versatile, because it's so easy to use, just add more or less chorus, depending on what you're doing! I havn't been able to find a chorus as thick and full in any multi effects (with the sole exception of the Line6 PODv2.0), even the Boss ones! If it was stolen, and I never had the POD, I'd definately get another... plus, they're easy to find, and you can get them REALLY cheap!

I'm just posting an update on my love/hate relationship w/ the CE-2 to confirm that i LOVE it now without a doubt! See, I have the black Label japan version cuz it's supposedly the best. well, I agreed that the sound was fat, but maybe to fat for my taste. It seemed to round off my tone which is that sweet compressed overdrive that you only get from vintage amps. I thought it may've been a hoax w/ this pedal business because my fav players who used them in the 80s (G.E. Smith Clapton, Page) got tones pretty dead accurate to a Leslie in Chorus mode (go figure!)Anyway I still played with it because it made my Bluesbreaker sound like a leslie cabinet but i didn't like the boost and the fact that it cut my highs pretty bad. i just figured it wasn't the "real" one so i was considering putting it on the backburner for a Rotosphere or small stone phaser. However, after hearing/seeing that bright young man, who's review is probably gonna be after this post, solve this Jap/Taiwan/Dick York/Dick Sargeant dilemma, i changed my mind! All i did was turn the trim pot (the white plastic button on the circuit board with the phillips scrwdriver slot)and BAM! there it was all this time! It turns out that someone previously must've tweeked it all the way up and that's why it didn't sound right to me. Sure I've heard that tone before but i didn't like that type of chorus sound, it sounded too synthy or 80s something, I guess you guys who own these do. Actually there was some blue glue on the trim pot and some that dropped on the board, probably that's where this was set originally. all i did was line up the glue spots to where it originally was and I had that "sound". Because it seemed like it matched my original guitar output so now my tone remains unaffected with that sweet swirly sound that's pretty trippy with a little grit for a realistic leslie effect. people who talk about leslies equate it with that gurgly tremolo sound, when the leslie produces another distinct sound that gave birth to all these chorus pedals we have available today. and i used to think those players had leslies hidden or something but it was just this pedal the whole time. A perfect example of the sound I desire from this pedal is Eric Clapton's "It's In the Way That You use it" I doubt many people are into Hall and Oates here (I wouldn't understand why) but that was G.E. Smith's claim to fame during the early 80s before he was on Saturday Night Live. Another perfect example of this sound is used on their rendition of "When something Is Wrong with My Baby" Live At The apollo Theater. G.E's solo on that song is one of the many reasons why i fell in love with this effect. The point here is that you can get probably get a good sound out of any pedal that's decent if you know how to tweek it. That's what these guys probably did (or their guitar techs). but ,there, the secret is unveiled! WHOOOOOO!

THAT JAPAN CE-2 PEDALS SOUNDS BETTER THAN TAIWAN PEDALS IS COMPLETE RUBBISH !! READ NEXT SECTION BELOW ON WHY!!
The most basic chorus around - depth and rate knobs. Dead easy to get a great sound, very rich & lush - just experiement to taste. Pity this isn't in stereo it would sound amazing!
Sound Quality

THE TRUTH ABOUT TAIWANESE AND JAPANESE CE-2 PEDALS - As previously stated from another reviewer, there are four different makes of the ce-2 but the reality is the taiwanese version has the SAME schematics and SAME chip as the japanese ones. The difference in sound is b/c of this: there is a little plastic trimpot located on the circuit board on the pedal which you can turn with a screwdriver which tweaks the sound of the pedal - like a previous reviewer stated, factory settings for the japanese ones were set better than the taiwanese ones. IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TWEAKING!!
Upon experimenting with the trimpot I foubnd by turning the trimpot anticlockwise you reduce the amount of overall chorus and the chorus and tone begins to thin out and eventually turning off the effect altogether. Turning it clockwise increases the overall chorus level and provides more body and depth to the sound. i.e. I can get the SAME SOUND/TONE from the taiwanese version as the japanese.
DON'T BELIEVE PEOPLE/CONSENSUS SAYING THAT JAPANESE MAKES ARE BETTER - THEY HAVE NEVER OPENED UP THE PEDAL AND TWEAKED IT!! i.e. no need to hunt around and find an more expensive japanese version - it's the same!!
Fantastic sound - I run it my G& L legacy special and fender custom tele with my crybaby wah, bluesdriver pedal, into a fender twin. Rockin'!!

Having very little money to go splash out on expensive equipment, my main axe is an epiphone les paul standard, and sometimes my old fender squire, which is detuned half a step. Amp-wise is abit random at the moment, seeing i wouldn't use my 30w amp (being some old tanglewood make) for a gig, who would really? and along with the chorus i use a zoom 505 as well.
The sound the pedal produces is what you'd call a good vintage chorus, it does its job. i've used this pedal on and off seeing i have the 505 with me for the majority of the sounds i need (wheres the tremolo at though!?), though i use this more now seeing i'm looking around at other compact pedals, so i can move away from the multi-effects units. but yeh sound is great, does the job for what i want.

but yeh this pedal does its job, you can't go wrong for being for free anyway but u know, if i was to see this cheap, or any boss pedal as a matter of fact, i'd probably buy it. it gets a nine simply cos it is missing a good few thing compared to the chorus pedals of today, but the tone is sweet. you can't go wrong.

There are actually four versions of this pedal. There is the Taiwan green label (most recent), Japan green label, Japan black label, and really old Japan black label. There is also this rumor that the Japanese ones sound better. After having purchased 5 and lining them up I can confirm this rumor. It's really true. However of the three Japanes versions only the really old black label gives you the superior boost.
This pedal is not noisy but the the really old Japanese version is exceptionally noiseless and will fatten your much better than the others. What sucks is that the pedal may be black label made in Japan but sound no better than the Taiwanese made versions. How do u tell the difference visually between the old Japanes black label and really old Japanese black label, I don't know. Anyway I use it after a CS-2. It makes my sound that much better. However lining up several in a row (in my case 5) doesn't give you the Smashing Pumpkins, "Siamese Dream" overdub effect like I thought. (These pedals are logrythmic i.e. one pedal doubles the signal, two quadruple the signal, but this exponential effect doesn't go on forever of course hence the log. The wave offset, along w/ the sound, is magnified so u get a watery synth sound which I don't like. However the sound is definitey that much fatter. The only downside is that if u turn the depth knob all the way up u can hear a slight flanging effect.

These pedal tends to be very old, older than me, yet they still work. Once I had to resolder the ac jack but this was quite easy to do. The ac adapter and battery holder (the two parts that are most likely to get damaged) have not changed in the past 20 years and are quite easy to resolder. I'm just a basement musician so I don't have anything else to add.

Very friendly and helpfull. I've called numerous times. The downside is that I'm calling long distance from D.C. to California and if the the line is busy they make u listen to songs written by Roland engineers. (This is torture in my opinion and almost as bad as top 40/adult music).

I play metal (mainley shred) and some classical. I play w/ my fingers and I can read music sorta well. It fattens both my overdrive and clean sound. If the very old Japanese black label version was stolen I would have a hard time replacing it. As I said not all Japanese black label CE-2s have that superior sound. Further the black label ones sell for a lot on Ebay. But I only have two pedals in my effects loop (the CS-2 is the other one) and I would invest the resources needed to reaquire such a pedal if it were lost. All in all if u play lead metal and u want a chorus this the pedal to buy.

Using a 2001 Ash bodied USA Strat-->Teese RMC-1 wah-->2 80s Proco Rats-->Boss CE-2-->Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp. I also tried this pedal without the rest of my chain, but there was no noticeable difference. This pedal is not noisy at all. Much older than I am (from the early 70's) and it works like a dream. Absolutely no click when switched on or off, and the effect is beautiful. Compared to a Voodoo Labs chorus, this is simply the sweetest, most lush sounding chorus ever. It will NOT, however, do the Leslie thing...but it does the chorus thing perfectly. This will be the last chorus I own, unless I find another old CE-2...in which case I will own 2 :) The only reason it gets a 9 is because it can't do Leslie..which isn't really a drawback in my book................

I traded a Boss OD-3 for this thing from a friend who just happens to be trying to get me to sell it back to him...fat chance of that. I set mine to have a vintage uni-vibish type warble...like hypnotic vibes. I don't use it for uni-vibe tones cause the micro-vibe does it better and the ce-2 sounds like a chorus...not a vibe...but it will get pretty hypnotic, just really spacious and bottom of the ocean wet. This thing is like throwing my amps into the water without losing the tone. Thick, Lush, Wet, Spacious.

Also I use a voodoo lab power supply w/adj.DIP switches,a plus w/older pedals. Now up until today the CE2(MIT) was brighter but very good but for me too bright. I followed the suggestions of the writer who mentioned that if you play with the trip pot you can see a big difference.. Well it worked about to about 80-90% satisfaction.I marked the orig. position and toyed with the tones.Going just a bit counterclockwise was a vast improvenent for the (MIT) version. Sounds pretty darn good if you ask me. Just like a CE-1 in mono. That's the big downfall of this pedal... it is a mono chorus. Stereo is the way to go for that full out, totally lush chorus tone. This one is pretty thick, organic & lush sounding, though. Now for the big news flash!!! I buy & sell pedals constantly. I have had numerous Japanese & Taiwan versions of this pedal. THE JAPANESE VERSION DOES NOT HAVE SOME MYSTICAL, MAGICAL VOODOO THAT IS MISSING ON THE TAIWAN VERSION. The components are the same, folks. The circuit is the same. The circuit is based around the Panasonic MN3007 BBD chip... this is where the magic comes from. This chip is used in BOTH versions. The secret is in the setting of the internal trim pot. Minor adjustments can make a major difference in tone. It just seems that for the most part the trim pots were for some reason adjusted better on the Japan models than the Taiwan models. This can be fixed!!! Open your pedal & experiment... use your ears. This whole Japan vs. Taiwan thing has been planted in peoples minds, and taken root in the guitar playing community. It has been WAY OVERBLOWN. It's like saying that I will only drink Budweiser that was brewed in St. Louis, because the BUD from the Tampa plant is inferior... there is no major discernable difference. Enough of my soapbox... this is a wonderful pedal to have in your arsenal if you're in the market for that BOSS chorus sound.

WOW! is the best way to describe the sound of this pedal. My signal chain is guitar (Les Paul, SG, Strat) -> VHT Valvulator -> tuner -> MXR Micro Amp (to match Strat output with Gibsons) -> TS-9/808 -> TS-9/808 -> Amp -> (effects loop here) -> Boss CE-2 chorus -> Boss DD-5 Delay. I have owned the Boss CH-1 Super Chorus which was really thin and basically crappy sounding. I then got a CE-2 from Taiwan and that sounded okay, but it was still thin and cheesy sounding. I then bucked up for a black label Japan model of this pedal and the difference is absolutely unbelievable. This is quite easily the best chorus sound I have ever heard. It is very full and lush. I wasn't a big chorus guy, but now that I have this pedal, I'm going to start using it a bit more. The clean sounds with either the Fender or Gibson sound angelic. I couldn't be happier. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR . . . don't get the CE-2 from Taiwan, it's a waste of time. I haven't heard the green label Japanese CE-2, but I've heard it's not as good as the black label. You can find a black label CE-2 on eBay for around $60 if you're patient and don't mind getting outbid a few times before landing one.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents here. I own both the Black and Green Label CE-2's, as well as a crappy Ibanez Soundtank Chorus. I've had ample opportunity to a/b these pedals, and I can concur that the Black label has more depth and warmth - this has also been commented on by my girlfriend, who knows nothing about guitars at all. The Green label one is still miles ahead of the Ibanez, and I'll be keeping it as a backup, but for now, the Black label will be getting the most use.

For my views on analog modulation (I wouldn't use anything but), see my reviews of the re201 space echo, pearl ce-22 chorus, boss dm-2, etc. Clean and shimmery, Crank up the knobs and get a shake. Not a vibrato but nice, nevertheless. I use it after a analog delay, usually, but before a tape echo for maximum effect. After a parametric e.q. or a gain boost yields some nice tones, too. I would rate this after a ce-1. The ce-1 has a huge signal, this has a bright signal, but it is only mono. I hear Roger Waters uses two for stereo effects. hmmmm.....

So yeah. If you want a huge sound, get a ce-1 (love it, not yet reviewed it), but the ce-2 is a nice match, especially with the dm-2 (my recommendation). Boss may be the most popular brand, but they deserve it for putting out such nice stuff for so long, and I hear they are really cheap in the states, too. It shimmers and is a really pretty chorus, but that ce-1 vibrato.......mmm...vibrato..

I have a very fond spot for my 'ol CE-2; A fellow band member sold it to me in 1991 and it has since the outlived ALL my instruments, amps, etc., I have used it for both bass and guitar (1974 fender P-bass, 1979 Les Paul Custom)and, especially bass, has proven to be somewhat of a signature BASS sound for my band (a dark-ambient, ethereal rock combo), spanning 6 albums. I run it through an Ampeg B-50 amplifier, and set it at about 12:00 each mostly, for a nice warm tone.
Initially the effect of the CE-2 remonded me a little of that post-punk bass sound of Steve Severin (Siouxsie and the Banshees), Simon Gallup (The Cure) and Peter Hook (Joy Division).

Use with a Musicman Silhouette Special and Les Paul Pro (P90 Pickups)into an late 70's Marshall JMP combo or a JMC800 head. Regardless of setup sound is rather thin and not the warm tone I have heard from these pedals. Mine is made in Taiwan and I have just done a A B comprasion with an older model made in Japan.
Older model made in Japan is "warm and lush" mine is much "thinner"
Get a Japanise model if you want a warm sound.

I'm using this with a 40th anniversry model Les Paul, a 2001 Fender American Hardtail Strat, and a 95' Gibson Explorer. I'm using a Mesa Maverick 1x12 combo along with a 2501 Marshall and a Fender Super Champ. This is the best analog chorus I've used period! This is my third one, and am using it to replace the much overrated Vo*doo L*b Chorus. It may not be quite as warm as the VL but, it doen't have all the noise or the annoying boost feature that the VL has. I never compared it to the Fulltone, but to me $300+ for a chorus is a bit rediculous. Nice and smooth sounding and doesn't get all wacky sounding (at extreme settings) like alot of the newer digital stuff.

I've compared this to the Nobels CH-D, the Boss CE-1 (tone sucking), the Boss CE-5, Ibanez SC-10 and the Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus. I like this the best (the CE-2 that is). Mine is made in Japan, but I did own the Taiwaneese model and found it to be real close tone-wise.

I bought it mostly because I wanted to get the tones David Lindley and Ry Cooder got on "Bop 'til You Drop." It does the trick. I have other choruses, a Rivera amp with built in chorus and rack mount multi effects boxes. I think the little blue Boss box is my favorite. Too bad it's not stereo.

Before i go into this, let me clear up something that has been blown out of proportion here. there are 2 versions of the japanese model (black label/metal screw and greel label) Now everyone sys that the first edion of this pedal is the best to get. I had a japanese black label model which had a black screw rather than a metal one so i thought I got ripped because while the sound is very good and one of the best choruse i've used i thought it could be better and it gave me a bassier sound which i didn't like very much which i realized after using it extensively. my fav guitarist (G.E. Smith) used one in his hall and oates days in the 80s and it had a "vibe unit", "leslie" sound and i figured mine wasn't that one that everyone raves about. so i ordered the one i thought had the metal screw cuz it looked like it in the picture. however when i receive it, it had the black screw and the green label! so i was like "oh no" since everyone said that one wasn't as good as the other guy. but when i played through it and set it the way i do usually i was in for a great surprise... it did that vibe unit thing i was looking for! now the depth isn't as heavy on this but that was okay cuz i don't like that heavy depth, the rate "swirls" are more pronounced.if set the right way it gives a good approximation of a slow rotating leslie which is why i wanted this in the first place. As your traditional chorus effect it might not do it for you which is why most of you wrote this off but if you're looking for a cool vibe unit this will do the trick

Now I'm really into blues stuff.last time around i had other equipment but I now play a epiphone 58 Korina "V" through a Fender blues junior amp. my effets are a Dunlop univibe (which people have also wrote off but sounds great to me) the CE-2 and a tubescreamer re-issue runing it before my "chorus/vibe" effects which acts as an overdrive like on a leslie cabinet. in doing this with the CE-2 it sounds ver much like a "growling" overdriven leslie. I discovered this through common sense and how G.E. fooled me into believing that he was using a leslie when the whole time it was just this pedal with an overdrive unit! now i am very happy with this pedal, moreso than the "original" which i really liked but after a while got fed up with as it wasn't giving me the tone i really desired. so a word to the wise: before you go bashing a certain pedal take some time to really work with it or if there are different incarnations as with this model explain how they are differnt because what might not work for you may be that "holy grail" that someone else is looking for, such as goofs like me. "Different folks, different strokes" (i think that's how it goes, lol)

My setup: American Strat/SG --> True Bypass Switchbox --> TU-2 -->
TS-9 (x 2) ---> Rat Distortion ---> MXR Phase 90 ---> Boss CE-2 ---> Crybaby ---> Switchbox ---> Fender Deluxe Reverb. The Boss CE-2 that I own was made in Japan and has a green sticker on the the bottom. From what I understand this is a reissue, and supposedly does not sound as good as the black-sticker Jap version. To my ears, this pedal sounds great. The chorus isn't as lush as, say, a Super Chorus or Dano Cool Cat, but it sounds much less processed than the afformentioned pedals. Also, it works well with all of my other pedals, and sounds good both clean and dirty (it sounds INCREDIBLE after a Rat distortion). It is also a relatively quiet pedal which is a big plus in my book.

I must say, I am not at all disappointed in my purchase. I have owned a Super Chorus, a Dano Cool Cat, and an Ibanez chorus and this pedal blows all of them away. I am not the type to use chorus all of the time but I will turn it on for certain songs or lead parts. This pedal can definately add flavor when used appropriately.

This peadal continues to suprise me. It's not as lush as some i have heard, nor does it sparkle as much as some can but when ever i need to record a guitar line that requires chours i find myself turning to the CE-2. Only on the extreme settings does it provide an unusable sound. Well maybe i just don't know how to exploit those sounds yet. It has a little noise but it is an old pedal. Not enough to worry me. Slightly limited but it does provide a considerable range of chours sounds.

Very easy to use, just two knobs. I don't have the manual, and would never think to ask for one.
One word of warning: this is an old unit, which is why it has the wonderful analog sound that they foolishly don't make any more, but--the output is mono. I guess back then, they didn't use to bother with stereo output...but for chorus, it is a LEETLE bit stupid. I've never worked with two amps, so I don't know if there would be any way to rig it to get "true chorus."
Sound Quality

First of all, let me just state that this is the Japanese black label model. I haven't played any others, but some say they're very inferior, so if you're thinking of buying, check the bottom of the pedal.
I'm way into chorus (hardly ever play without it), and this is by far the best-sounding chorus I've ever heard. Since I could still imagine it being better, it's not a 10.
This pedal adds a wonderful richness to your sound. The effect is most pronounced, and most beautiful, on higher notes. You almost feel as if the pedal is creating phrasing for you. It also does a remarkable job of cutting through the mix, unlike any other chorus I've played with.
The CE-2 sounds especially great combined with reverb. With heavy reverb--when you want that--it improves the sound almost beyond belief. But it's great ALL the time, at least in my experience--with or without distortion, playing fast or slow, hard or soft.
Only two criticisms, really: it's quite noisy. And, there's a dirtiness in the sound that's quite endearing, only, you can't get rid of it, and it's not ALWAYS what I want. Though lots of times it is...if there was only a Dirtiness knob that could be turned up or down, and less noise, I'd give it a 10. Heck, I'd give it an 11 if I could (for that extra push over the cliff).
I use it with a Les Paul and a Fender concert amp. I play with high gain--the noise might not be such a problem without that. I play it with the rate at four o'clock and the depth all the way up. This produces a very rich sound without a hint of wobble, but there are lots of other possibilities. More contemporary units with more knobs are more versatile, but not that much so in most cases. Actually, the Boss CE-5 is a lot more versatile, but it has that fruity swirly sound which you can't get rid of except by turning the settings down until the chorus isn't very rich. The CE-2, on the other--like, say, the DOD--doesn't give you any fancy schmancy crap, nothing but pure chorus. But the chorus it gives you sounds so much better than the DOD, it's a joke to even compare them.
I found when I used the DOD--which I did for years--I always had the chorus on. When I used the CE-5, it sounded more interesting, but I often wanted it off. With this baby, I'd be hard-pressed to find a reason (other than noise-reduction) to ever play without it. If I could build it right into my guitar, I probably would!

This is a chorus from the golden age of chorusing (made in Japan as opposed to the later model which is from Taiwan). Had I only bought one or two of these back in the early eighties I might not have ended up with so many overpriced digital effects in my closet! None of these (Roland, TC, Lexicon, Line6, etc.) beats the pure analog beauty and musicality of this little babyblue box (actually the GP-100 chorus would be second).
As others have said, and will continue to say, Andy Summers and this particular model helped put chorus on the map of modern guitar textureville, but I assure you, even if you're not a police fanatic you will LOVE what you hear from this little monophonic wonderkind.
I use the rate setting at 12 o'clock and the depth at max. Never have I heard a more natural and lush and warm and musical chorused tone.

I'll use this space to describe my ultimate "100% humidity" chorus setup here... I run the guitar into apreamp that outputs dual mono signals, each into a separate CE-2... the signal from the pedals runs into a T.C. G-force where I'll usually patch in ANOTHER (stereo) chorus and delay in some permutations. I run this into a stereo power amp and a pair of 2x12s... bring a raincoat!
It's still amazing this near antique holds its own... unlike SO many choruses I've played, the CE-2 doesn... 't 'zang' your overtones, obscure your choice of notes, or create unnatural sounding attack
...it just sings and sings and sings!
My other rig is an M&G 18w breaker, and there's just nothing better than guitar->pedals->amps after a long day of pressing buttons on so many digital racks.

I'm posting this so that maybe my experiences can help someone else find what they want or save some $$$....
I have owned all three versions of the Boss CE-2 pedal (for anyone who hasn't heard about this pedal, it is an excellent all analog chorus pedal from the late 70s-early 80s that was used by the Edge, Andy Summers, Gilmour, etc.) These pedals are still available for about $65 on Harmony Central classifieds, ebay, etc. So, here's the scoop - by far the best sounding version of this pedal are the original, Made in Japan units with the BLACK sticker on the back (and the metal battery compartment screw if you're lucky, then you know it's the real deal). This chorus is unreal, warm, watery, swirly, sounds like heaven. Particularly good with a clean amp (Super Reverb, Classic 30), try it after a Phase 90 set at 7 or 12 O'clock - incredible.
I first owned the Taiwanese version of this pedal, and never really liked it. It is kind of thin, with a metallic-ness to it that I couldn't use. So I sold that one and bought what I thought was the famous 'Made in Japan' version on ebay. This pedal WAS made in Japan, but apparently is a reissue or something and has a green sticker on the back. This pedal was not significantly better than the Taiwan version. So I sucked it up and traded that one on a gen-u-wine original from the late 70s. This freakin' pedal is incredible, I can't stand it it's so good, I wake up at night and plug in just for a minute! ;)

Like I said, I've owned all three versions, and have traded twice to get the one I wanted. I lost about $25 on each of these transactions, so my total price for THE TONE was more like $120 (ouch!!) To me it's worth it b/c this is the only chorus I've heard in a while that I really like. To be fair, the other 2 versions of this pedal are not bad, they are all analog chorus pedals, but the original Made in Japan units are magical. If you can find one you won't be disappointed. 2 points off, though - why can't they all sound equally as good??

I use a Heritage hollowbody ES-335 copy with a Trace Elliot Tramp Twin and sometimes a smaller Fender Squire 15 practice amp.
I don't notice noise only some distortion (like fuzz). This is most noticeable on wacked out settings. A friend of mine has a Roland Jazz Chorus amp which is very noisy and I think the chorus on that is a bit different. The chorus in this pedal is OK but sounds a little tinny and brightens up the sound of the guitar. The pedal can help get Ozzy sounds and surprisingly, it does certain Pet Sounds (Beach Boys) which I'm not sure it was designed for. I think it helps fatten the sound some for blues and rock and even sounds pretty good clean. I have the made in Taiwan version.

Initially, I wanted the chorus for playing blues (either clean or with classic rock levels of distortion). I think it works OK for that but the brightness of the sound makes it seem digital (it does say on the back that it is a "class B computing device." It does not do the Beach Boys sounds very well so I would not get it for that reason. I like older music (pre-Britney Spears). Possibly, an older analog chorus would suit me better.

This is the Japanese model. I've heard that the Taiwanese isn't even worth comparing. I've also heard that there are *some* Japanese models that weren't that great. I know that I've seen Japanese ones with stickers on the bottom and some without stickers (with the info printed right on the bottom plate). This is one has the green sticker. So...
Maybe I have one of those fluke Japanese ones because the sound isn't what I expected. It's a great chorus, but it doesn't knock my socks off. In fact, it's a bit thin and you sometimes forget it's on. Maybe it's my rig, but I was expecting a very rich and thick soupy chorus and what I got was more watered-down and kinda bright. Again... it's still a great Chorus on its own.
My setup is : Fender Mex Strat ==> Fulltone Fulldrive 2 ==> Boss CE-2 Chorus ==> ZOOM 5000 Distortion pedal ==> Digitech GSP-21 Legend (with only Delays and Reverbs activated) ==> TopHat 50W Emplexador Head ==> Marshall 1960a Vintage 4x12 cabinet.

Have had it for 2 days. Doesn't want to work with my Voodoo Labs Pedal Power which advertises that it works with every Boss pedal out there. Have to check into that.

I play a mix of shoegaze and loud hard powerpop, bands like My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Swervedriver. I also play lower stuff like Low, Red House Painters, Idaho. The pedal adds nicely to both loud shoegazy blissy stuff (it's practically a requirement when you're doing those add9 chords) but really shines when it's just between your guitar and amp. I love its shimmer, but I hate that it's just not deep enough. I don't mean like a flange, but more thicker like a Roland JC120. I've got an Arion Chorus that isn't that great but when combined with the Boss, this is closer to what I'm looking for strangely enough.

I use a Gibson Les Paul and Marshal JMP 100 Watt. I have a TC Electronic Chorus the old one and started using this boss which I liked better. Then the TC Electronic got Jealous and know it doesn't work anymore. The boss CE-2 has a clear shimmer that adds an extra good tone.
