Very easy, with basic soldering skills and some patience you can make your stock CE-3 sound amazing. Directions are easy to follow and the result is awesome

Very easy to dial in a good sound from this pedal.

I like the fact that I can dime the rate and depth knobs and still get a usable effect. I also love that I can switch the dry sound to the left or right to my liking.

The one thing that Boss goofy was to mount the middle knob so that it blocks the L.E.D. light. I just turned my pedal 90 degrees when I mounted it to my pedal board. problem fixed.

I've used this pedal in the effects loop of my Marshall 3203 head. There is a slight boost in volume when using this effect but if I pick or strum a little lighter it balance well in the mix. I used this pedal with and older Carvin X60 head as well and there was a slight increase in volume as well. It must be the inherent nature of this pedal. It's not annoying or anything but it kinda wakes you up a little if you forget to expect it. HA.

There is no noise or swirling/swishing sound when engaged with out playing. Even at higher gain settings the pedal is quiet.

Boss stuff is durable and road worthy. No back ups needed.

I use 2 of these in my effects chain. The sound the CE-3 makes with the rate and depth knobs maxed out is unique to this pedal. I've owned the CE-2, the CE-5, and the CH-1(I think) Super chorus and none of these pedals make that particular sound. The other one I use with the knobs at 12 o'clock for the perfect chorus.

I've been playing over 20 years and I have expiramented with lots of pedals over the years. These older boss pedals really do sound better than the new ones. The newer pedals are grainy and digitized sounding. Older Boss pedals are to the new ones like Coleco Vision is to the Playstation 3..HA.

I wish it had stereo inputs.

If it was stolen or lost I would be dissapointed but not too distraught because there are plenty of these on the used market for 50-60 bucks. Both of mine are made in Japan. One with a black label and the other has no label (came off). I paid $53.00 for one and $32.00 for the other. Still very affordable for a great sounding pedal.

Pretty easy to use rate depth stereo switch

I use it through a fender champ and a '65 princeton along with a crybaby wah, dod phaser, hao soul pressure overdrive, and boss os-2 overdrive/distortion, and boss ps-3 pitch shifter with a Godin exit 22 and a fender standard stratocaster. This is the Japanese "green label" model. Very quiet. As far as the sound goes, I don't understand what all the Hype about it is. The effect seems to be barely there. I would recommend a PS-3 pitch shifter for a chorus effect instead of this pedal (maybe I don't like it because I've used the PS-3 before I heard the CE-3). Cuts the signal a bit when engaged but doesn't seem to suck tone when disengaged. I bought it because of everyones reviews (against the advice of my brother-in-laws guitarist he also uses a PS-3) and am quite disappointed. It has hardly any depth to it and definetly won't make anyone seasick.

Solid as a Boss rock that it is.

I play blues and classic rock mostly and have been playing off and on for 30 years. I wish it had more depth to it although it does add a bit of shimmer but nothing earth shattering. I would probably not replace it especially since it only cost $30.00. I would check out others and definetly some other model.

It first look it appears complicated due to all the settings. But once you plug in you figure it out pretty quick.

In my opinion this is the chorus of choruses. I got this in the 1980's and have used it since. Its tone - very thick Bossy chorus is very 80's. Very yummy and colorful. Combined with a Memory Man delay all is perfect in the universe.

Play all kinds. My modeling amp handles my chorsu needs so this pedal sits idle. Getting a tube amp just to use my vintage pedals and get rid of all this digital crap....

Touch trickier than other choruses (chorii? choree?? plural anyone?) because of the extra selection of configuration. But if you want that in the first place, you can't really complain that you have to deal with it... Otherwise simple enough.

I used it with a bench of Japanese Fenders through a Peavey Classic 30 valve, a Fender all valve Super 210 and an old 1970s Vase Trendsetter valve head (with a Marshall 210). Sound quality seemed good, although a bit metallic and/or cold at times. I'm naturally a bit biased because something in me has never liked chorus tone. I've used it more to separate the stereo channels when I use 2 amps. (But I'll still be gentle...)

Boss 10/10. I've probably had 40 Boss pedals ove years and not one has ever given me trouble. I've had 3 Washburn pedals- all had reliability issues. Zoom, likewise. Korg, ditto. DOD/Digitech...the same. Boss are just unbelieveable.

They've started publishing their manuals online (about time) but they're not especially supportive. The bossarea.com site is the best resource (but it's not run by Boss, just by Boss fans). Bossarea is very cool. Boss are fortunate that their products are such high quality, support is very rarely needed. Although, I'm sure they factored that in to their business plan...

We play indie or alternate stuff. I have been playing for a long long time but I'm in denial over my aging, so I won't say how long... This was an ok chorus. I sold it to buy a CH-1 (again- back to the one that suits me more). In my very humble opinion, it sounds more organic and seems to do a better job of splitting the signal into stereo. Very sufficient- just not for me. And it's hard to be truly objective...

It's pretty basic. Rate and depth. The third knob is for changing between stereo and mono.

I just got this one back from my bass-player. Forgot how good it sounded. I know, ten is high rated, but man... I own a ce-2, the holy grail of chorus except from the ce-1. This one does a better job in my world. Ce-2 has this big transparrent sound to it, but the 3 has a warmth and a lo-fi Wibe that I like. It just sounds better to me. The ce-2 is from Taiwan and ce-3 is from japan. So maybe there's a point there. Never heard the Japan ce-2. But of all the chorus-effects that I've heard, this one is the best. That includes any fulltone, Voodoolab, EHX, Ibanez.......and more..

I play mostly blues, rock and indie. I have been playing for almost 25 years. If this pedal was stolen Id get another one in a sec, the price for this one is pretty low. The ce-3 is a very good pedal, it has a warmth to it. The only chorus that fit my taste. I know this is a high rating. But I've never heard it beaten.

This pedal is really easy to use you can find your chorus in like 5 minutes. its quite simple a bit confusing at first but once you get the hang of it you are set.

Sounds good, come on it is ANALOG it sounds good not as good as the ROLAND CHORUS JC 77 amp which I owned. I bought this one because I wanted to hear if it sounded like the amps chorus but it didn't. It laked "Depth" and it is more focused on the mids because it uses JR4558DD opamps which are the ones that the Tube Screamer uses, which tend to take away the some of the low/high end making it best suitable for overdrive pedals.
Never the less this pedal is quite warm sounding and it quite good compared to most digital choruses of today.

I have ordered some parts for a ROLAND JC 77 amp and they were very friedly.

This pedal is great for me because I like chorus. I own 2 the CH 1 which I like and this one the CE 3 whish I also like, the two are quite different though. The only thig that I wish that this pedal had is a bit more depth and a bit more speed, which I modified mines to do, now it sounds like my beloved JC 77 chorus amp. If you guys want to modify this pedal it is really easy and cheap as well. you can do the same mods of the CE 2 to this pedal because their circuitry is very similar, almost the same.

Very simple to use and easy to find the sound that you are looking for. Not complicated at all. It has some cool features also.

I recently bought this pedal in Evil-Bay, I saw the oportunity and I took it it was cheap like 20 bucks but it did't have the spring, I recently got a spring and I'm glad I did this investment.

The sound of the pedal to me is similar to a CH 1 which I also own, without the high end EQ. The tone of the CE 3 is more focused on the MIDS really warm though and I like it. I recently replaced most of the Electrolitic capacitors because they age with time and they tend to dull the tone of most Chorus pedals and tube amps. The pedal I own was made in JAPAN 1983 and thats like "24" year old Electrolitic Capacitors which can affect the tone mostly for bad. Now it sounds a lot cleaner and I can hear more highs, overal it has more clarity. If you want to try a simple mod just replace the 100uf capacitor, which is the thickes _cylinder like_ component with the same value but NEW take a look at the polarity carefully and go for it. You can find these at any radio-shack for a buck.

IT is a BOSS, I own 5 of these and they have never failed me except on the on/off FOOT SWITCH, but that is easily fixed.

I have dealt with them a couple of 2 and they are very friendly and they know what you are looking for. I think they are musicians also. I have ordered some parts for amps and pedals and they are right on target all the time they know the products very well.

I play Contemporary Christian in spanish and this pedal is good for many music styles. Blues, 80's rock and super Ballads. I have been playing 8 years now. I like the tone of the CE 3. I hate that it doesn't have enough DEPTH.

It depends how technical you want to get about stereo stuff but yeah it's an easy to use pedal. (and NO! not all pedals are easy to use)

K well when I first got this pedal I really didn't enjoy using it, the chorus sounded pretty normal really and I got very annoyed at the way it dulled the tone on my guitar a bit even when it was dissengaged. Also the volume drop when engaged was annoying. So it does have a few little quirks i guess but here's the thing... when it came time to sell it I just couldn't I guess I fell in love with it. I've done a lot of experimenting with this pedal in terms of various amp set-ups and the stereo setting including using it in the stereo effects loop of my stereo Marshall MG 250DFX and also using two seperate amps. I've pretty much found that if you put the rate at about 12o'clock and the depth at 3o'clockish, switch the stereo knob to mono mode and just plug into output B (D-E) you can get quite a sweet sound that will cut through a bit for solos (depending on your other effects and settings etc) and also is just plain nice clean. Sounds cool with a long delay :)
The reason I use output B is because I find that output A seems to have a bit of destructive interferance from adding the wet and dry signals together which can make the sound a bit too thin fr my liking.

I also have a rocktron Tsunami chorus which I wasn't too sure about when I first got because it didn't really sound like "a better version of the ce-3" at all but after playing a bit you can get really hot swirls of vibe-like analog chorus from the tsunami. So lesson learnt? if you want deep, seductive swirls of mojo don't get the ce-3. But if you want a chorus pedal with plenty of chorussy chorus you might like the ce-3. Just to clarify the tsumani has a simpler possibly subtler sound than the more complex (like more chorusses) sounding boss pedal.

The other set-up that I played with for a bit was using two amps fairly near each other, having the rate lowish and the depth about 12o'clockish I think. I had delay on one amp and I don't remember what the stereo was set to but I do know I got compliments on "that beautiful tone" i think it was also described as "awesome". But ya'know... maybe I'm just really good at playing the guitar :P

yup. seems good. The knobs are impressively well built. I just managed to pull one off after quite a lot of effort and they are very solid. The little black rubber thing is broken a bit but no-where near the end of it's life. my DS-1 black rubber thing is in far worse condition but still usable :)

It's made in Taiwan, I know that has nothing to do woth the reliablity but I didn't want to put anymore writing in the sound quality section.

It's a useful effect even though it's not the nicest to use because of the slight tone-sucking, but I have an eq pedal to counter things like that and it's not actually very noticable when it's in the effects loop. It is on my pedal board and will stay there with the setting i described befor along with my other chorus and eq pedal.

I've had this pedal for at least a year and have been playing for too long to remember. I build and design guitar effects and have tried out far too many than anyone should lol. so that's my qualifications ;)
I'm also in a gigging band but that's just not that interesting. I play many styles but would describe myself as a blues guitarist based on my usual solo style, quite like pink floyd really.

As a performance oriented guitarist I usually don't look for variatey in a stompbox. I look for versatility surely. but not to the extent that I would twiddle knobs on stage between songs to get that 'other cool sound'.

SO what guitarist would pass up a chance to boast their rig? not me :)
Boss ce-3 (of course), Rocktron Tsunami Chorus, Boss FV500L volume pedal, Boss GE-7 equalizer, japanese Ds-1, NYC Big Muff ??, custom effect switchgear, and hot pink a Guyatone HD2 Harmonic distortion (not on pedalboard at the moment). I have a marshall MG 250DFX stereo 100w amp and use the onboard delay, reverb and distortion. I also have a peavey rage 128 or something practice amp. Oh and I made my own talkbox and distortion (own design), they're not used often tho.

i had the japanese made one..bought it in a 2nd hand shop near my area..i dont know whats the retail price of this but i think got it really cheap(45AUD)..sound?well for me at least all choruses sounded the same..i was gona buy a ce5 until i saw this thing and plugged it in and bang..just what i wanted..compare this to ch1 well il choose this pedal straight away..couldnt get the sound i wanted out of ch1..with the ce5?id go for ce3 still..some people complain about the hiss..well i dont have it in mine..but we'll see..

Simple to use, i didnt get a manual with it as i got it 2nd hand from ebay but it took less than a minute to work out how to set it up the way i wanted, i go out from output A and use the left stereo setting seeing as i dont yet have a stereo rig. the other TWO (wow, so many, i might get lost) controls are kinda obvious so anyone who doesnt get it must be a US president or something (no offence to jfk, he seemed alright)

I know that really i should plug this into the fx loop but i cant really be bothered with the extra cables and i get a erfectly usable sound from this route. Most of the time i use a subtle effect to add a shimmer to my clean/crunch but turn both knobs up and you get a great vibrato/chorus effect thats fun to play with! Sounds really nice on the martin, i use it for a lot of picking to add a bit more magic. I had doubts as to how 'warm' this would sound in comparison to the CE-2 but no complaints since i bought it. Ill give it a 9 because i'd still like a CE-2.... or even a CE-1 but only for the rarity factor :p

Well, mines an early Made In Japan one, not sure what year but its battered and is obviously pretty used.... however, NOTHING is wrong with it and as far as i can see from the circuit, its all original so hasnt beem repaired. Then again it is a Boss pedal and theres a reason "8 million guitarists" use them lol

My band play alternative rock so main influences are RHCP's and Smashing Pumpkins, add in a bit of john butler trio, guns n roses and fo fighters and thats us really! as said before, i like to use this as a "shimmer pedal" and for that its great, id buy it again or have it repaired if it ever broke.... doubting that tho!

I originally owned the Taiwan version,and bought a Japanese version on Ebay.Well.....I really HATED that one man! It had this really "clean" sound to it....too much treble response,and it could NOT get the nice "swirly"(for lack of a better word)tone at all.The Taiwan version has a great Small Clone-ish sound to it.....sits over the top of the sound,instead of integrating within it.Gets a much nicer breakup too,since I use it in front of my amp.The Japanese one just had too much chimey character.Seriously,it was like I had 2 entirely different pedals.Here are my settings on it:RATE-6,Depth-10,MODE:Mono.If you do that with the other one,it just don't sound right man.Can't explain it.Anyways,this thing is THE BEST chorus I have ever used,hands down.It is so lush,and gets a really nice sound with cleans,and a MESSY,jacked up tone with distortion!!!Think,like,Nirvana "Come As You Are" sorta chorus.....or any old shit like The Chameleons,The Cure,etc.Really great pedal man,the Taiwan one anyways.But it is a lot cheaper than the other version.....the pots are not as good,the battery terminal is crap also.But the SOUND.....oh yeah.....it's a HUGE part of my sound!

I play death metal,and experimental progressive rock/noisy shit,like The Cancer Conspiracy,King Crimson,Mr Bungle,etc.I have been playin about 10 years and have owned way too much shit,really.This thing is my little friend that no one cares about.I have tried the most expensive chorus pedals out there,and they did not have the charm of this one,though others were more "hi-fi",less noisy,had more switches....blah blah blah.Buy the cheapo version,it sounds way better!!! Much more unique!!!!! It is one sexy pedal.This and my SD-1 overdrive I cannot live without!!! They are MY sound!

two knobs, one mode switch, stereo outs, pedal. if you can't figure it out than your a complete (insert insult here). Easy as hell to get a good sound out of.

I run it in the EFX loop of my marshall 9004 preamp ( to take advantage of the stereo outs) sounds really good a nice spread of sound. in mode A the sound is very thick, and shimmery. in mode B the effect isn't as pronounced but sounds good nonetheless. This is an underrated boss pedal that is a secret weapon in my setup.

Made In Japan, Green Label

Agile Hornet, Boss(ns2,mt2,ds2,sd1,hf2,eh2,dd5,cs3(not neccesarily in that order)) plus 2 wahs --->Kustom Lead II. I havent used the ce3 with all of these at once, but with some here and some there...i find the effect to be just right...not faded, or not overwhelming...i find clean, you can get some very nice tones...i was able to get the Sanitarium intro sound using it clean...with my mt2, i got a good Into The Lungs Of Hell type sound(kinda dark)...personally, i think it sounds better clean...even just on chords, it dresses em up nicely. it can go from a nice soft chorus, to a harsh vibrato type sound. pretty versatile.

i read on someone elses review "if there was a nuclear war, 2 things would survive. Cockroaches, and Boss pedals." couldnt have put it better myself...i now own 9 boss stomps, and they are all working fine.

from metal to blues, to country, a chorus can be used...i didnt even compare it to the ce2, ce5, or ch1, so for all i know they could be better.

NOTE!!!!!!! The one that i purchased was made in Japan...a friend and I were jamming a while ago, and he had the same pedal, but his was made in Taiwan...i gave them the direct test, straight to the amp, and put the settings EXACTLY the same...and they sounded a bit different...The Taiwan-made ce3 sounded slightly thinner, and not quite as "in your sound" it sounded more like "on/behind your sound." whether as the Japan one was "in your sound."lol I dont know if that really makes sense, and could have just been a problem with his pedal, but i do know that Japan models are apparantly higher quality. anyways, 10 overall...great pedal, get it...

Not impressed. During the 1.5 year that I've owned it, I've probably used it twice. It now requires servicing for some kind of short that has developed inside the unit. (Make sure you read the customer support section.)

Take heed my friends, support for these pedals is a joke once you're beyond the warranty period. In the San Francisco Bay Area, where I live, the two designated reps for Boss (in San Jose & San Mateo) charge as follows: San Jose: flat fee of $65; San Mateo: $95 per hour, with a $75 minimum fee. Sending the pedal to Boss for servicing is the best deal: $45 per hour (charging on the quarter hour). Frankly, I couldn't believe the first two service companies. In my opinion, they're robber barrons.

Using various guitars and amps. Usually placed in the effect loop. My favorite setup is: G&L Legacy Special--->Morley 70" PWO Wah--->Marshall JH-1--->Crate GXT-100, then in effect loop BOSS RDD-20 delay--->BOSS GE-7--->Boss CE-3, and from the output "B" of the CE-3 to a Sound-Research SS amp (all the processing of the guitar tone is already achieve, this amp just reproduce the same tone for stereo).

Not noisy at all, it sounds great on clean. With distortion it depends on what you are looking for, it is focus on mids and removes a bit of bass and soften the attach of your notes, I find a little lost of volume when on as well, sometimes it can be desirable, sometimes not, this is when the GE-7 comes handy.
But nothing can beat that stereo option. You get a huge surround sound effect that can only bring smile on your face.

It gets a nine because you need an equalizer to compensate the increase in mids and decrease in bass.

I play with it since the last 23 years, I bought it new in 1982 and it's still like new. Almost always on. It did cost an arm and a leg back in 82 (around 260.00 Can $)but it pays off over the years.

Stolen of lost ? I would search for another one right away, I cannot play in mono any more, it is so much more Huge in stereo.

Insgesamt ist es ein angenehmer und weicher Chorus, der aber gerade auch durch seinen leichten Mittenboost immer ausreichend stark ist, er hat einen eigenen Charakter, den muss man mogen, ich finde ihn gro?artig/retro, sehr schon. Mit viel Disto und Depth ganz auf wirds bei meinem Setup etwas zu dick, aber so weit will ich das Ding eh nicht aufdrehen. Wirklich die Sonne geht auf bei cleansopunds und den Stereooptionen der kleinen blauen Kiste, schade dass ich nie clean spiele...wie auch immer...

...es ist ein Teil das einfach Vintage ist und auch so klingt, tatsachlich finde ich das hier wirklich gut! Sieht nebenbei auch noch gut aus, blau-metallic! Einziges Bossteil mit drei Knopfen in einer Reihe, leider sieht man dadurch die LED schlecht, aber man hort den Unterschied deutlich ob die Kiste an ist oder nicht...

I use a 30 Watt Marshall Amp and a WH10 when i turn the chorus on its a little bit noisy but just when high volumes but its not bad! I thinnk the CE-3 Sound great but to get a great sound it good wehn your make your amp trebly i recorded a Song called under the bridge ;) with treby setting and i sounded like the original version that recorded with a CE-1! Yes it sound like my favorite artists ;) I would use it with Dist it sound to muddy then just for clean sounds

I play mostly Funk and Rock and its good for this. When it was stolen it were a reason for me to buy a CE-1 ;) a CE-3 is good to but CE-1 is better :D I love about this Pedal that ist very warm i hate that you have to sett your amp in other positions. Its a good chorus which can sound good with the right settings ;)

Very easy. Nice little variation in the mono selection through output A or B, the nobs are pretty obvious.

Set up is a Les Paul special (P100s) through CE3 into modified peavey classic 30, or the same setup with a Maton acoustic. When kicked in there is a little noise from CE3, but only myself or the very occasional mixing dude will pick it up in a live setting. I found that the peavey effects loop was strangely more likely to generate noise, so if I'm using the CE3 I put it inline to the amp. When inline or in the effects loop the CE3 does colour your sound a little when switched off, seems to just steal a little treble sparkle. That's fine by me as if I'm not going to use it, it's nowhere near my rig!

The chorus itself is good simple chorus, nice shimmer, can be taken to the light Phasey edge, or right down to slow gentle reverby sound. Does good cheesy chorus too, but I'm not going to use that too often. Doesn;t rob me of the inherent warmth of my set up but adds that litlle bit of depth for the lone guitarist situations.

I have no idea how old it is, Got it second hand 5 years ago, but it's never let me down. I gig once a fortnight, and treat my gear with respect but solid use. It certianly travels well enough, and stands up to the usual mishaps (dropping, stepping on wrong part accidently etc)

I prefer to play hard rock (foo fighters, spiderbait) and dirty blues, but you don't play too many of those in a row at a pub gig. If lost or stolen I'd search out another old boss chirus, maybe a CE2, but i'd grab another of these jast as happily. My fave feature is the light shimmer and thickness it can add, I like the colour too.

I've compared it to all sorts of multi effects and stand alone chorus. I can't justify the money given that chorus isn't my fave effect Other stand alone chorus sound remarkably similar given the cost and every multi I've tried so far seems to lack a little warmth and flexability.I like that I can just take this out of the rig during a break, without playing with patches etc etc.

Doesn't get much easier than this, rate and dept plus a two pos knob which selects the type of chorus if used in mono, In stereo it creates two seperate wave forms which sound huge when put across a stage.

I'm using a Non-reverse gibson firebird, Various distortions & Fuzz boxes (Boogie V-Twin -> Roger Mayer Vision Octavia -> MXR M-151 Shibby!) -> Fender Blender (home made from orig schematics tho...))
then into the mod effects ~ CE-3 -> BF-2 -> OC-2 all rigged up in a crazy way through the effects loops on the JCM, plus two on a Boss LS-2 (boss' greatest invention!) and one on a boss noise suppresor then finally into a vox wah & a DD-3.

I always use this in mono (not that the rig looks that way - bit embarasing when i pull the board out at a venue!) the stereo mode is nice but have to draw the line somewhere otherwise i'll run out of leads. The chorus is very nice a subtle, without causing any noise at all. I can only here extra hum, if i get my boogie on at the same time, but thats crazy talk.

The effect is not a strong effect and if you want that swirly whirly curly GIRLY kinda chorus my advice is - buy a cat. It really does add a new dimension to your clean sound (thats mostly what i use it for) allowing you to OOOOOOO and AAHHHHH all night. similar vibe? it goes from nothing to that nice chorus sound on The Nirvan unplugged Gig - even some early metallica - if you like that sort of thing.

I only use it with a power supply so i don't know what the battery consumption is like.

Easy. There are only two knobs, virtually anything sounds good.

It sounds very good- I am content. You can get those early Metallica clean sounds, dark and mystical. Also, it may sound quite psychedelic when used with disortion, although I wish that it could be tweaked up to higher speed, as this would sound sicker, almost Jimi Hendrix. Does not matter what kind of gear you have. It is a nice option to be able to use it in stereo also. You can also use a switch (in mono) to turn off the chorus effect and make it sound like whammy bar fluttering. It does create some noise though, especially with distortion.

Mine is a well-used unit that looks kind of beaten up. I inherited it one year ago. Still no problems, I use it without backup.

Good chorus in every sense apart from the minor noise. I dont know wether I'd replace it with the same type or not. I'd probably try something newer and more extreme.

I found it really easy to get a good sound out of this pedal, owing mostly to the fact that it only has the two dials. I got mine second-hand without a manual, but the dials are self-explanitory

My current set-up (owing to my status as a poor student) is an Ibanez GRX70 into Boss MT2, Danelectro pastrami overdrive, this CE-3 and then an RV-3, all run into a 60's secondhand-store amp made by Dynamic Musical Enterprises of Japan (If anyone knows anything about this amp/company, I want to know.) I found the pedal went really nicely in my setup, not creating any extra noise. A big word of warning here - this pedal is best suited to certain types of music. I'm very into a lot of 80's new wave/"goth" stuff, as well as shoegazing and drone, and I found this pedal was wonderful for these genres. However, probably not the best pedal if you don't like the retro sounds. That said, the pedal is capable of a wide range of sounds, from just a slight hint of chorus to a really big swirly sound. It sounds a bit queasy if you turn both dials up really high, but I found it safe to either boost the rate right up and hold back on depth or vice-versa. The pedal plays really nicely through the reverb, and adds a lot to either of the distortion pedals. It adds a nice dimension to feedback, also

For $75 (that's about $140 US) this pedal performs excellently. It matches well with most of the stuff I play, from the aformentioend shoegazy "goth" stuff on the higher settings to jazz and folk stuff when you turn it down. Short of a small clone, this is probably the best chorus pedal i've tried - certainly on par with all the other boss stuff. Unless I suddenly come across a lot of money, this will stay my primary chorus pedal. If you like bands such as The Cure, the Church etc, or anything like Slowdive, you shouldn't pass this up

The easiest pedal I've ever tried. Two control nobs and a mode switch nob I had issues at first (works better with an adapter for some reason)no manual

whichever guitar has the right tunning to a Nobels DT-1 (quality pedal, get one) to this chorus to a bass combo amp. You heard me. sounds quality, it has a hum, but you can at least tell when its on when you're using a battery (the light doesn't go on!) I'm pleased with it overall went into the guitar store and bought the cheapest non-dano chorus. I love the sound and have been playing it for hours checking out everything its got. Wide spectrum i'm impressed

Its a Roland Everyone said its indestructable, i'll agree. My Nobels pedals are based on the same sort of chasis design, and they've been abused for a long time. It'll last forever.

Very impressed, I don't use a lot of chorus, but this pedal my change that. Lets gig it hardcore and see how well it'll hold up. Yeah, I play grunge even though it is long dead. I play anything that has quality rythm stuff (I hate solos so much) Cranberries, Ben Harper, Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, Aerosmith, pumpkins, oasis, white stripes, Green Day, Barenaked ladies, etc...

3 knobs - rate and depth are simple enough, but the mode is a bit trickier. Basically, use mode I(mono) unless you're using both outputs A and B.

I'm using a '77 ibanez artist, thru the CE-3, an electro-harmonix big muff usa reissue into a 40w Marshall JCM2000 DSL combo. The chorus can give a bit of background hiss thru the overdrive channel, but i don't normally notice as long as a note's ringing out. Apart from that, it sounds gorgeous. A warm, lush chiming twang with the rate high, and a lovely 12-string sound with rate and depth fairly low. Crank both and it sounds like nirvana's 'come as you are' but too much depth with distortion sounds a bit muddy.

It's boss. built like a brick outhouse. 'nuff said. Would never need a backup in a gig, but would take a spare battery.

Got it second hand, so haven't seen the warranty. Can't see it breaking in a million years.

Got this pedal from a mate at uni for only 20 quid. It's perfect for grungey 90s rock like nirvana or the pumpkins, but can used to add an extra something to any electric guitar sound. Unfortunately, i haven't had chance to try it out in stereo, but it's my favourite pedal. stunning.

Some of you wrote here he dosn`t like CE-3 for its big hiss. Yeah, some units are too noisy (cause BBD registry). So i`d replace the CCD chip (MN 3207 - about $4 in my country) and it work great, no hiss, no metalic sound, realy warm, comparable with CE-2, but stereo !!! If you know what you`re doing, try it!! Absolutly perfect!!!

I think its sort of metallic sounding. It was cheap though. I like it best on rythm guitar and when i'm messing with feedback it gives it a wierd rythm. I think of boss as the middle of the road as far as pedals go. I use it from a Les paul into a fender tube. I think the electro harmonix would be better but more expensive

Its a good basic pedal I don't think it excells at anything its just pretty good. Like I said it was cheap and that counts for something when it comes to value. Plus boss pedals are tough. I think I'm gonna keep it for a long while. I like it overall.

The only thing that would be a bit hard to understand is the mode switch, but when you figure it out its no match.

I use this in the effect loop of my Crate Vintageclub50 (all tube) and then I use Crybaby Wah and a H&K Tubeman (yes, I know I'm not suppose to).

I love the way it fattes the sound...
But my main use for it is for strange effekts, like a harmonic with much harmonics and swell on the guitarvolum. Or just for freak out solos.
Anyway, I love it, it just makes everything sound special.
My favorite things about it is when you turned everything up, and I mean EVERYTHING, and you get feedback, with alot reverb...When you put this baby on I get a kind of tremolo scary sound thats really lovevly. Then put Wah on that.AHHH!

I can depend on it, it does seem to use as much battery as my BOSS Compressor.
And it is ofcourse hard as a rock. Rockhard.

There are several ways to run this pedal. Even though it only has three knobs, you can run it in stereo, mono w/chorus and clean sound, and mono with chorus.

I use this pedal with my Ibanez Artstar and either a Mesa/Boogie amp or Polytone Mini-Brute IV. I have found that this is a quiet pedal. The effect itself is great. It is not an overbearing effect and is pretty transparent. The chorus mixes with the clean signal, giving you a sweet sound. I bought this to sound like John Scofield (when he used a chorus) and I believe this is the exact pedal he used. This pedal also nails the John Abercrombie, Steve Khan, and Mike Stern sounds.

I have used this on gigs and it always works. I have never had a Boss pedal fail on me and I have never heard of it happening.

I play mostly Jazz music, but I also play Funk and Christian Worship music. I've been playing for over 5 years. If this pedal were stolen or lost, I would probably just use my Boss Super Chorus, which is another great Boss pedal. My favorite thing about this pedal is that it nails the contemporary Jazz guitar sound of John Scofield, Steve Khan, etc.

The CE-3 is relatively simple to use. One depth knob, one rate knob, and one selector knob for stereo or mono usage.

I bought my pedal new, so it has a manual; however, I haven't had to refer to the manual at all.

The CE-3 is the only chorus I would ever use at this point in my playing career. It adds warmth to my sound (I use it solely in stereo mode) without being overbearing like a Small Clone or the old blue DOD Chorus. And, it's not so sparkly, glassy and digital sounding that it makes your ears bleed, like the Boss CH-1 Super Chorus (a godawful, useless chorus pedal in my humble opinion, by the way) or the tc electronic SCF Stereo Chorus/Pitch Modulator/Flanger. Also, when the CE-3 is set on the stereo mode at a slow rate and heavy depth, there is a nice, yet subtle "swirl," almost a whisper of a Leslie effect. The CE-3 does have just a trace of noise, so I'm hesitatingly giving it a 9.

You won't get Kurt Cobain (a la "Come As You Are") out of the CE-3; for Kurt's gurgly, warbly sound, use an Electro-Harmonix Small Clone. But the CE-3 gives you some really nice, warm, subtle chorus. I strongly recommend letting this little blue metalflake marvel shine at what it does best--STEREO chorusing.

C'mon...it's a Boss. Heaven forbid, but if nuclear weaponry or any other method of mass destruction annihilates the world, the only things left will be cockroaches and Boss pedals.

Although I have many backup CE-3 choruses (Boss doesn't make them anymore, so I "collect" them), I've played the same CE-3 for 18 years; it performs just as magnificently as it did when I first took it out of its box and plugged into it.

I can't speak intelligently on this particular subject. I've been a Boss pedal user for more than twenty years, and I've never had reason to contact Boss' customer support.

I play kind of an eclectic blend of jazz, blues, and rock--kind of a "Bill Frisell-meets SRV-meets Alex Lifeson" style. I have been playing for 26 years, and I love to write and record my own tunes, as well as play live.

The CE-3 is the cornerstone of my sound. I usually keep my CE-3 set with the stereo mode on, the depth at max (about five o'clock) and the rate somewhere around 9 or 10 o'clock. I ALWAYS have it on, yet many guitarists listening to me don't really notice that I use a chorus. A lot of them ask, "How do you get that huge 'surround' sound?" I always reply, "Two Twin Reverbs and a Boss CE-3, mainly."

If my CE-3 were to be stolen, I'd be upset, but I've acquired several backups through the years; however, if someone stole ALL of my CE-3 pedals, I'd probably weep uncontrollably and scour all the used pedal cases in music stores looking for a replacement CE-3.

Basically I've got a Les Paul running through a bunch of pedals into a Carvin MTS3212. This pedal doesn't do that high speed rotating thing that say a Marshall chorus might do (thankfully). But if you're looking for a smooth sound (STP - Core era), then this is it brother.

As other reviewers have said as well, this thing is old. I have an early early Japanese model (with the metal turning key thing) and it's still kicking. I had to clean out the pots but all else aside, still sounds great.

This is much more of a rock-based chorus. So if you're really into modulating your sound (new-school incubus, various sevendust), this probably isn't going to be your bag.

It's a BOSS-pedal with two rotary knobs and one mode selector. Step on it to operate...

I mainly use a 2000 Fender Mexico '50's Stratocaster with a Blue Fender-Lace sensor in the neck-position, a standard classic pickup in the middle, and a Fender Custom Shop '54 Strat pickup in the bridge-postition. I run it through a Dunlop Cry-baby, Boss OD-2r Turbo Overdrive, Boss CE-3 Chorus. My amp is a '70's Yamaha B-212 solid state 200 watts.
This is by far the best chorus effect I have, and will ever own. Period. I have owned a lot: Boss ME-30, Alesis Mididverb 4, Boss ME-X, Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble, Boss CH-1 Super Chorus, TC-electronics G-major, but a always come back to this trusty old box of mine. It just sounds so sweet, nothing wild, just sweet mellow chorus. I can get a really nice Smashing Pumpkins-like sound out of it. My main musical influences are R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, and the like. The only style where it lacks some is Radiohead; those big airy parts are hard to do, but maybe coupled with a phaser and delay...? But you can't get all in one, still this is the best chorus-pedal ever made.

Looking in the dictionary.... "Reliability, a - Boss". No, seriously, I haven't heard of anyone breaking a Boss-pedal, have you?

I needed a copy of the manual and blueprints, so I called Roland in Denmark (where I just happen to live), and they sent me a copy of the manual, and the ORIGINAL blueprint whitin 3 days. Nice.

I have been playing for 8 years straight, and this is my favourite effect ever, and judging from the lot I have owned, this is very good. If it were ever stolen, I would put on my camouflage outfit, tie a red band around my forehead, strap on my jungle knife and hunt down whoever stole it, and... you figure it out.
What do I love about it? Everything. The sound, the color, everything!

2 knobs and a rotary switch, seems simple to me.

You can get some cool sounds out of this little box. I use mine with a tele a cry baby, fx86b, dod tuna and a dod overdrive preamp/250 ran to either vox or crate amp.

My setup is
Ibanez RG320GP->Boss DS-1->Boss MT-2->DOD FX-17->Boss CE-3->Peavey Backstage 110 + Yamaha 10watt
obviously i haven't got the best amps yet... so i use the peavey to cover the lows and mids and the yamaha to get some treble from the setup...
The setup as a whole create a bit of background hum... but the effect on its own creates virtually nil.
I normally try to keep the rate bellow the 11 o'clock mark, but by turning it all the way up max i can create a really odd flange-type effect. As For the depth, i normally try to keep it reasonable high to access the more lush tones the pedal can create.
Now for the stereo/mono switch to really be used u either need a stereo input amp or two amps (like i have)... there is no more enjoyable sound than a guitar running in stereo (well, maybe if it was running through a mesa boogie amp, i can but dream) OR if you want to be a lil experimental try running in stereo into only one amp. This creates a very phased sound, that it (literally) almost half missing (this is due to how the stereo effect works)

If ur performing live you litterally can throw it at hecklers in the crowd and not worry about damaging the thing, trust me, i've seen it done

You'll probably never need it unless you pedal is some how involved in a Road Traffic Accident with a very heavy truck...

This pedal is great for playing any style of music, infact you don't even have to create music, this pedal creates such an enjoyablwe sound on its own that you can simply sit back and enjoy the sound of playinmg single notes in stereo for a good 10-25 minutes

Rate, Depth, and a stereo/mono switch, could it be any simpler?

It isn't as swirling as other choruses and is a little weak. At first I really didn't like it and I still don't, for a usual chorus sound. But when I switched the stereo\mono switch to stereo and only used the effect out jack, I got an amazing sound. Alomst a phaser/ delay sound. It rocks. I am giving it a 4 as a chorus and a 10 for a crazy sound.

If you took Incubus, Chili Peppers, Rage, Nirvana, and Hum, threw them in a blender on frappe for 45 second to a minute you would get my music. This pedal is great if you like freaky sounds this pedal is for you, if you want a rich luscious chorus get a super chorus or chorus ensemble. For what I do this pedal rocks.

This vintage Analog chorus is a great pedal for everything. You can get a good vibrato/tremolo sound in one mode, and a parallel de-railing creamy sound in another mode. There are only rate, depth and mode switch. It is horribly easy to use...

Its not noisy at all and the effect always sounds great. I think it runs good with a lot of different music styles...probably A dark metallica "one" sound or somethin.

I use it behind the Boss PH-2
Super phasor,it produces an unbelieveable shimmer and swirl.This is great for rythym guitar.It doesn't sound so good with bombastic amounts of distortion,in my opinion.But with a good overdrive,the CE-3 really delivers.I have other heavy-weight choruses,but I use this one a lot.

I play blues and it gives a good vibe background sound with a guitar. I have been playing for 3 years. I own a custom built bass with a peavy tko150 amp. I like the sound of the pedal I am just looking for other effects such as a bass balls pedal and if interested I would trade.

Simple the knobs do what the say pay attention to using stereo or mono and how the type affects the output though.

I play this through an all boss pedal board with Fender Jazzmaster/ Telecaster, Danelectro U2, Carvin Electric 12 string and it just doesn't do what the old blue D.O.D. chorus did the only down pedal in my boss setup but because mixing pedals makes stomping on them a pain in a live situation this is on my live board but stays home when I am in the studio

Not what I expected have to go with dod for stomp box chorus

Very easy- I bought mine used so I had no instructions, but I didn't really need them. You can adjust it by ear to get the sounds you want.

Used with a Gibson LP & Marshall amp, the effect is buried at times. But it seems that this combo of guitar and amp bury most effects under their heavy sound. Still, at times the bright shimmery tone of the CE-3 comes through, and it is nice and lush. I've used it for recording through other amps and the tone is bright and crisp. A very nice effect for filling out your sound.

I've never had a problem with this pedal. I've owned it for 3+ years now and the only complaint is that it sucks batteries dry (but don't all pedals?) Still, its not the worst offender in this category.

Never dealt with the customer support. Boss is a big enough company that I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to find a service center.

Very nice sound- but in my experience it works best when you have a bright tone to begin with. It's shimmery sound can easily get lost below a mountain of distortion.

Very easy to use. It really only has two knobs, so not much to wory about. One knob for depth, one for rate, and a third for switching to stereo mode, which will make the pedal sound very bad if set incorectly.I didn't get a manual, but it does not need one.

I play a fender strat into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, with an asortment of other pedals along the way. This effect is silent, and delivers that classic chorus tone that accents the highs and leaves out the bass. The chorus has a very nice, lush tone. My only complaint is that it could be a bit fatter. I probably would not use this in conjunction with a wah or a flanger, but it sounds great with delay and some overdrive. This thing sounds way better than the new boss chorus boxes. If you can, get one of these instead.

I play blues and jazz mostly, with funk mixed into both. This pedal is outstanding for both styles. I don't know why Boss replaced this model, because it is much better than their new choruses. If stolen, I would try to find another. This is a great way to thicken out a single guitar, especially in Jazz music. Also, it stays true to that great chorus tone found so often on eighties blues guitar. The only reason it looses a point it the slight lack of fatness in the tone, but that is a minor detail.

3 knobs...rate, depth, and mode. Easy enough.

I'm using this with a Squier Super Sonic through a Peavey Ultra Plus head. It really makes my clean sounds shine, and it gives distorted notes an outerworldly quality. It makes some noise if I stomp on it too hard, but as long as I'm playing with a drummer and bassist, it's not audible. I would need to be careful if recording though. I think it's a problem exclusive to my unit, however, and I wouldn't worry that much about it. It has about three sounds that I use- thin chorus, wobbly chorus, and smooth chorus. Not the best chorus pedal out there, but it's what I need, and what I use.

I'd say it's dependable. I believe it's a late 80's unit, and it's still going strong now, so that speaks volumes about it. I would use it on a gig without a backup.

Overall, it's a great pedal, and it's what I need. I prefer simple pedals with a couple knobs as opposed to floor units with multiple banks that are incredibly versatile. I don't know why, I guess I just prefer to use as few effects as possible, although they are fun. This is a staple effect, and I suggest that you get a chorus of some sort, whether it's this one or another. Considering the amount of money I paid for this unit, and the use it sees, I give it a ten.

What's with these categories? Why would a pedal not be easy to use? Isn't that the whole point? Sure, it's easy to use. The real question is do you really want to use it at all?

I don't know why I got this thing. I hate the chorus effect. I thought I liked chorus when I got it, but I was so wrong. So very wrong. Even if I did like it, this thing makes a lot of hiss.

Oh yeah. Sure. Super. It's a fact that if you never ever use a product, that it will last a good long time. The things we don't rely on are usually the most reliable.

Boss is a huge corporate monolith that doesn't care about you. They want for you to give them $100 for a $10 device. For this, they will paint it a bright shiny color, because they know that you like colorful shiny things. Their contempt for you is palpable and genuine.

I still can't believe I paid full-price, retail. What a horrible product. Hey, if you like the chorus effect so much, why don't you just go get one and share this empty feeling with me?

3 knobs: rate, depth, mode... very simple

this unit has a constant hiss when not in bypass, but it's not TOO overbearing. if the rate is too low and depth too high then the effect can get slightly metallic like there's too much signal regeneration or something. the best setting (in mode I, mono) that i have found is rate at 11 o'clock and depth at 3 o'clock.

solid as a brick caca haus. this unit has been dropped, drowned and thrown from a moving car (no kidding) and it still works like it did when i bought it new back in '88.

never contacted Roland on a Boss product. tried to get help from them
on my D-50 synth/PG-1000 programmer back in '89, tho, and they all but told me to go jump in a lake. had to sort it out myself.

i originally bought this new in '88 and sold it for half of what i paid to a former bandmate in '93. 7 years later, i bought it back for US$10 cos i knew what it sounded like and it happened to fit the bill. i would not buy this unit today for more than US$40. i use this to round out a custom pedalboard made up of Boss (DD-3, TR-2 and MT-2) and MXR (Phase 100, Dynacomp) effects. i play a strat-style guitar with EMG SA pickups and SPC mid-boost thru this pedalboard and into a 1988 Fender Dual Showman (non-reverb) head and a sealed-back 2x12 cabinet. the group i am in does original music ranging stylistically from The Sundays to STP/Soundgarden and this setup pretty much does the trick, tho there IS room for improvement. i find the CE-3 gives just enough shimmer to my sound without being overbearing but, given its hiss and slightly metallic midrange, i would replace it with a T.C. Electronic SCF in a moment if i didn't have plans to go back to a rack setup.

If you plug the thing in right (the guy who had just bought one and decided it was crap maybe didn't?) not confusing the A and B outputs its real simple. I seem to remember plugging in output B (dumb, confused, drunk or all three) once and using in mono and getting V. little effect.

I use mainly a Charvel model 6 and a Roland Bolt amp. I was looking for a sound like the chorus on the Roland Jazz Chorus 120 which I recorded with once but got the Bolt as it was cleaner sounding. This does the job, its a really good chorus effect like the JC,a very warm effect. Using on leads I got accused once or twice of sounding 'like Brian May'. ..tsk(honestly don't know what this might be about) I have a general impression of some slight generalised background noise in this thing.Have been using it for years. Discovered that it sounds good in combination with a distortion pedal (the one I use is a bit crap) but BEFORE it in the chain. I wasn't expecting this. It tightens up the fuzz sound. When used before an analog delay you can get cool breezey sounds like Alan Holdsworth on 'letters of Marque'etc.

Never had any problems with it. I have looked after it well.

I think I dealt with them once about something else. Can't remember what happened.

It can help broaden out an otherwise dull sound if you're playing at low volume, for example; very useful on chordal work. If it were lost or stolen I would check out the market very thoroughly because I imagine there is plently of competition.( at the time it seemed to be an inexpensive way of getting exactly what I wanted). Bearing in mind that you can never replace something exactly unless its the same make/model I would miss it. My style is too broad-based for that to be an issue (well: Metal-Jazz-Techno)but I also play with covers bands for a living and this gadget is useful. I have been playing for millions of years -well since many years before this thing came out - and it has generally helped making music. I like it.

I bought this pedal used and it did not come with a manual. However, since it only has 3 knobs it's pretty easy to figure out :) The user can control rate, depth, and can switch between stereo and mono modes.

I'm using a Fender Standard Stratocaster through a Fender Champion 110 amplifier. The amp does not have an effects loop, so the chorus has to go between the guitar and the amp. I generally play in positions 2 & 4, which are hum-cancelling. The pedal is extrememly quiet, and does not appear to generate any noise.
On the clean channel, the chorus is excellent, and is exactly what I was looking for. It provides a warm depth to whatever you want to play. Simple arpeggiated lines just seem so much fuller. I don't imagine I would play rythem without this pedal.
On the distorion channel though, things get kind of weird. It just sounds... well strange. The problem however, is the lack of an effects loop on my amp, as it's my understanding that time based effects such as Chorus sound best placed after distortion or overdrive. I don't yet have an overdrive or distortion pedal, so I can't comment on how this would sound.
Sounds great clean, but don't know about distorted or overdriven yet, so I have to give it an 8.

BOSS. Enough said.

I've never had to, nor do I expect to have to deal with them.

Overall, I am giving this product a 9 for two reasons.
1) Like I mentioned above, I have no idea how this product will sound when properly placed in my effects chain, and I won't know until I buy an overdrive or distortion pedal.
2) It eats batteries like the Cookie Monster eats cookies. This is insane... A fresh battery lasted only two days of practicing several hours each day; probably about 8 hours of usage. This basically means that you will NEED an AC Adapter to use this pedal. Sorry to complain about such a minor point, but batteries can get pretty expensive at the rate this pedal would eat them up. Why even bother?
If this pedal were lost or stolen, I'm not sure what I would do... I am seriously considering buying a BOSS GT-3, rather than amassing a collection of stomp boxes... If I buy the GT-3, then I will sell this pedal. If I don't, then it will become an important part of my setup. If it were lost or stolen in that case, then I would either replace it, or possibly try out a CE-5 Chorus Ensemble.
BOSS just makes things hard, because all of their products kick ass :)

3 knobs rate depth and mode

Okay, I bought this pedal about an hour ago and... what is that word I am looking for? !CRAP! Oh my God do not buy this pedal, it makes about 2 different noises and the adjustment knobs make no difference. I own a Zoom 505 and it sounds EXACTLY the same as the cheap chorus on that.

So, do not buy this pedal, unless it is at a garage sale or pawn shop for under 10 dollars. I am going to sell this pedal immediately. Look into maybe a CE-5 or even a multi-fx box for the price (new). This is probably the greatest regret of my guitar playing experience.
