Not that difficult to get used to. The real kicker is the "Tone" and "Effect Level" knobs. This thing is meant to be put into the effects loop.

Sound Quality : 8
I use it with a Godin Detour (discontinued) through a Peavey Classic 30. As stated above, this pedal is meant to be used in the effects loop. Otherwise, it will sound very sterile and sound very poor in general. Be sure to fiddle with the "effect level" and "Tone" knob; it is what makes or breaks your sound.

Without effects loop: 5

With Effects loop: 8

Reliability : No Opinion
Its a boss. Get an AC adapter though.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never Dealt with them.

Overall Rating : 9
Very solid pedal that can be used in a lot of different applications. Make sure you put it in the effects loop though.

Peace of cake, four knobs, no need for manual.

Sound Quality : 8
guitars: custom made strat, yamaha pacifica; pedal chain all BOSS: CS3-DS1-OD3-CH1-DD3; to Roland cube 60. I needed subtle chorus, just to add a bit of spice when playing clean chords and arpeggios, and that's what it is. Anyone here looking for a watery, swirling type chorus, look for something else, this can't deliver it. Not noisy at all. Also good for acoustic guitar.

Reliability : 10
Yes, definitely. Just make shure you buy an adapter the moment you buy this pedal. It's current draw is 22mA, and it means one thing: it will eat batteries.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never needed them. And hopefully won't.

Overall Rating : 8
I've been playing for twelve years, constantly gigging for six years, and the first thing I look for in any piece of equipment is reliability. I also need effects that cover as many genres and musical situations as possible. I don't use chorus that much, so this box suits to me. Again, if you need quality chorus that bad, buy yourself T.C. Electronic (the one that Eric Johnson use), that will do the job. I'm fine with this one.

It's not difficult to use. Every knob says what it does. I give it 9 cause I simply don't like it...

Sound Quality : 2
So much tone sucking... It's awful...
And the EQ knob... when you are using it in clean sound - OK. You can twist it however you want.
But if you use it distorted there is a huge increase in the volume. When in distorted sound you should be careful where you leave the EQ knob so there will be no difference in the volume level when turning on or off the chorus.
Well, there is a Level knob on the CH-1, but when you turn it lower you barely hear the effected sound...

Reliability : 10
It is reliable... No problems with for more than 2 years (till I finally got rid of it and bought a better chorus).

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 2
This is a weak digital chorus effect... I give it 2 only cause it's reliable and never broke.

Takes a little tweaking to get a decent sound. Does not have the same depth of effect as many other chorus units.

Sound Quality : 8
I have a hard time assigning a numerical value to the sound quality of this unit. I think it is hideous with electric guitar. The sound is sterile, digital, lacks warmth, and gives an ice pick like chorus sound. Any of the older Boss choruses or the newer digital CE-5 sound warmer.

However... this chorus sounds GREAT with acoustic guitars. Everything that hurts it with electric seems to help on the acoustic. The chorus is precise and emphasizes the mids and highs on an acoustic extremely well. It retains the clarity of your acoustic sound without the slight muddiness that can result with a lot of other choruses. I was ready to dump this thing until I tried it on an acoustic.

I am going to give it my rating for acoutic, for an electric I would have to give it no higher than a 6. I think Keeley would have to have a mod for this for it to even be worthy of consideration for most electric guitar applications.

Reliability : 10
It's a boss, built like a tank.

Customer Support : 7
Boss support sucks, can't even get parts easily from them. But.. at least they finally put most of their newer manuals online so they don't get totally slammed. They also have a decent warranty and they aren't going out of business so they will be around to honor it.

Overall Rating : 8
I play and write orignal rock, mostly in the classic rock, old metal genres as well as writing music for acoustic guitar. Love the Grateful Dead, Dylan, CSNY, Allman Brothers, Yes, Queen, Deep Purple, Hendrix, Zeppelin, AC-DC, Sabbath, Al Dimeola, Zappa, Bob Marley, Sonny Landreth, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Sublime, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc.. you get the picture.

Have been playing over 30 years, I am constantly in search of better tone and although I don't have the best ear ever I have a pretty good one.

I have owned and tried a lot of pedals over the years and think that I can speak authoritatively in my review of this one. I will grant however that sound is subjective and different guitar/amp setups may yield different results.

My advice is, try this out if you are looking for a chorus for your acoustic guitar. If you are buying a chorus for your electric; unless you are looking for a really modern, mild chorus that has a very clean digital sound, you should look elsewhere. This is a great chorus for acoustic guitar players only. Love this for acoustic, hate if for electric.

your generally going to get one sound out of this and its exactly what i want an icy cold tone for icy cold songs about messed up stuff there's enough control on it to do exactly that and if you have an ear for it the eq, rate and depth can all be zero's in 2 exacly what you want. so its easy with musicians ears.

Sound Quality : 8
ive run this amp through a few different set ups a fender blues Junior, marshall Avt 50, Fender FM 12, Crate 212 and some other goofy amps and i can't say anything bad about it it's a little odd with distortions because im a big fan off high gain and fuzz but thats what i bring out my ce-5 for. i love the chime this adds, it's subtle and at points you wouldnt know it was there 9at least at my settings) it's good for a little extra color its not a warbly effect but ive got it sounding natural at times-im a big analog fan and i still like this. it's great for cure/joy division type jams as well as other things you just have to know what its going to do at what setting

Reliability : 9
very reliable never had a problem with sound cuts or anything but can boost the signal too much at times...

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 9
i would say more about pedal combinations and settings to help but ive taken a long time to get my sound so dont be tone deaf know it's not analog and turning a chorus all the way up doesnt make it lush. i like effects that add ambience or a different feel not to say oh he has a chorus or delay ETC. i like noise as much as the next person and there's pedals for that if you need an icy chorus this is it.

Very easy to use. Controls are straight forward and well labeled.

Sound Quality : 9
This is a great subtle chorus. It is not as lush and deep as many, but it is not intended to be. The EQ control is very useful when changing instruments and not having to adjust your amp settings to suit the chorus. I like having the level control as well to adjust the amount of wet/dry signal...many other models don't have this feature. Anyone complaining that it isn't lush enough should really do more research...why did you buy it if you want a very lush chorus? I'm giving this a 9 to make up for the uneducated reviews.

Reliability : 9
It's a Boss. It's well made...built for the road.

This pedal fits my chorus needs perfectly. It isn't the most lush, but that's fine with me. I run it in my effects loop and it's nice and quiet. I like having the dry/wet level control and the high end EQ is great! I can change guitars and effects combinations without having to mess with my amps controls. A note to those complaining about it being weak or subtle...why did you buy it? It isn't a TC or Small Stone...it isn't intended to be. I think it sounds great...I've been playing for 30 years and have been through tons of pedals over the years. I'm rating it a 9 to make up for some of the lame reviews.

4 knobs, but can't get a good sound out of it.

Sound Quality : 1
This pedal has no sound quality. It produces cold, tinny, cheap, cheesy, weak digital sound that cannot stand up to good chorus pedals. Reading others posts about this pedal, I am not the only one that has issues with the lack of sound quality of this pedal. The sound quality is bad, even for Boss. Boss dropped the ball on this pedal big time. There is WAY too much de-tune effect to this pedal, and you cannot tweak that out of the signal. Also, there is about a 50% drop in the sound and tone when I engage this pedal. That is completely unacceptable.

This pedal was replaced QUICKLY in my line up by a Electro Harmonix Small Clone Analog Chorus pedal; the sound is like a different world.

Reliability : No Opinion
Reliability is a moot point with this pedal. It sounds so bad that it gets replaced. I sold this piece of crap for $30.00. I felt guilty about selling it for that much, the poor sucker that bought it will probably scrap it too!!!

Even without a manual, you'd almost have to know absolutely nothing about chorus (or any modulation effects) to not be able to figure it out. Unless of course, you simply can't read.

Sound Quality : 7
If you're looking for an analog chorus sound, this is not the pedal for you. It's digital, and as a result, is very digital and 'icey' sounding. Great if you like a digital sound, and would probably sound pretty nice on a digital synth. If you're looking for Robert Smith style chorus sounds, this pedal can do it and more. Can even emulate certain Small Clone sounds but obviously isn't necessarily meant to. I've read a lot of reviews stating that this pedal has a weak signal and is noisy... My CH-1 cuts through full gain very easily and doesn't add excessive gain to the signal on a clean low gain feed on any amp I've used it on thus far. Not noisy at all, unless you take into account that touching the strings and etcetera are processed along with the signal. No switch or jack noise though. Perhaps I got a good one out of a batch?

Overall, it isn't the greatest sounding chorus in existence, but for my taste (I tend to like digital chorus sounds), I am happy with it.

Reliability : 10
This thing, like all BOSS pedals, is built like a freaking tank. Definitely one of the reasons why they're tour staples I can assume. The only weak point would possibly be the knobs, but you'd have to do some pretty hard kicking at it to even break those. I'd definitely use it without a backup, although it eats batteries up, so if you can use an adapter, use one whenever possible.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with BOSS or Roland for any product I've gotten from them as of yet.

Overall Rating : 8
I play an amalgam of many genres, and usually use this pedal in a situation to where I want whichever range to cut through a mix. It has pretty deep lows, ringing mids and icey highs. I have been playing for 20 years, own a 1978 Peavey T-60 and a 1997 Les Paul Custom. Sounds great on both guitars, but might be a little too jangly for a single coil setup. If it were stolen, I'd definitely be pissed, since I use it quite a bit, and would probably buy it again unless I found a pedal for the same price that I absolutely liked more. I love the color (fits the sound of the pedal), the icey digital sound, the build quality, compactness, and low noise. My favorite feature is the EQ, which brings in more or less of the high and low end respectively. My only major beef is that it eats batteries, even when turned off, if it's still plugged up. I did not compare it in-store to any other pedals, but I have used and owned quite a few chorus pedals in my time, and this one is one of the better ones I've owned and used. I wish it came with an adapter. It definitely helps me create music, since I've bought it most of my songs have at least one part in it that features the CH-1.

Takes a little time to figure out waht the nobs do. I don't know waht depth means but is makes the sound get swirlyer. The manual is no help it's all written in techspeak.

Sound Quality : 7
I use this with a vintage Cort Les Paul or a Hondo Telecaster into a Crate 10watt amp, and play leggato runs on the octavs. When I turn it on it's kind off noisey when all the nobs are up especialy the depth nob which makes the sound a lot swirlyer when I turn it down it sounds better. I want to raise the impedence of it so it matches my pickups more so I might mod it with a resistor on the imput jack, I do it to all my pedals it's a easy and a cheap mod to do that you never hear the big guys talk about because it takes their business away. I like tone I don't play a thousand notes a minute so my tone is important to me.

Reliability : 8
It's just like the other boss pedals I've used in the past I've used the ds-1, mz-1 and the cs-3. I'd use it without a backup but I'd probably bring another one just in case it doesn't work after the bar.

Customer Support : 6
The guy at guitar center was pretty helpful so I guess I give them a high grade.

Overall Rating : 8
I've been playing for almost 18 years and this sounds like what I need except the depth nob makes it to swirly when it's up to high. If it were lost I'd probably spend a lot of time looking for it and then by something else like a dirt bike or something else. I wish it had some way to control the speed of the pulsing because when I play on the octavs it sounds kind of dirty like it is to slow. I mainly play Robotcore music like the band Eephus or Pore so this gives me a good tone for my guitars but it gets to swirly with the depth nob so I gues it gets a point or two taken away for that.

Ease of Use : 8
The CH-1 is a 4-knob Boss and largely intuitive to use. I bought my CH-1 secondhand so no manual but its lack was no drawback. Controls are clearly labelled and straightforward in their functions.

I had long resisted chorus type effects but getting into a playing situation where material almost demands such effects meant that I had to bite the bullet.

A combination of logical controls and experimentation soon revealed some usable chorus settings. I don't like extreme modulation effects so by choice I have limited myself to what the CH-1 can produce. Used in harness with a DD-3 and some really great 'spacey' sounds are there.

Sound Quality : 7
Sound quality is fine. No appreciable noise and no perceived decrease in signal level when engaged. It adds a bit of chime and zing when needed, but is not a crucial pedal in my set-up like a wah or my Rat 2. Not so much meat-and-potatoes but more a dash of seasoning....

Sits on my pedalboard which is mains powered so no danger of battery death mid-gig. Pedalboard runs into either a Hiwatt DR103 [through 2x12 or 4x12 cabs], Lab Series L7 or Marshall MG30.

Pedalboard comprises:- Boss TU-2 >> Monte Allums CS-3 >> Blubber wah >> Monte Allums BD-H2O >> Monte Allums SD-808 >> Rat 2 >> Boss CH-1 >> Boss DD-3 >> Boss RV-5.

The overdrives/distortion form the basis for my sounds. Everything after the Rat is a bit of gloss on the fundamental sound. In that respect the CH-1 satisfactorily does its part.

Reliability : 9
The answer is a four-letter word.

B O S S.

Customer Support : No Opinion
No contact whatsoever.

Overall Rating : 7
As I wrote earlier, the CH-1 is an addendum to my sound and its loss would not cause a problem. It is useful to have that chimey gloss, but I would rank its necessity below reverb and delay [in order of importance]. Forgive the analogy - if the Rat is black/white, the CH-1 is pastel pink.

Not too difficult to figure out what the knobs do. I've seen better and I've seen worse in this department.

Sound Quality : 1
This pedal blows in this area. I've had this CH-1 for over a year now and have NEVER been able to get good sound or tone out of it. I read many of the reviews below and noticed many users have the same experience.

Even when I use this pedal alone, it drops the volume of my amp down by almost 50%. It does the same thing in my pedal board, no matter where I locate it. This is a BIG problem when you are playing out because you have to turn your amp volume WAY UP,turn the volume knobs WAY DOWN on your guitar - and that plays havoc with you sound and tone. I play a 1971 Les Paul Custom thru a Fender Bandmaster and cannot get any good sound from this pedal. The volume drop is unnacceptable for a pedal this pricey.

This pedal also ruins the tone. I have been unable to get any good sound or tone out of this pedal for over a year.

The bottom line is THIS PEDAL IS WORTHLESS.

Reliability : No Opinion
NA. I got rid of it because it sounds like crap.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 1
This pedal is useless, it kills your volume and tone. I expected a LOT more out of BOSS and a pedal in this price range. Even Danelectro's and Behringer pedals sounded better when I tried them at The Guitar Center (though I'd never buy Danelectro or Behringer junk).

I'm looking at Rocktron Chorus pedals to see how they are.

i would say this pedal is not that easy at first to get it sound just by tweaking straight out of the box, so i refer the manual and test drive all the knob to hear what it do (this is my 3rd pedal from the Boss series), editing patches would be a bit frustating until u get use t it, and the manual are decent. It did help to refer but it sure take some time to tweak it.

Sound Quality : 8
For guitar right now, im using this with an Ibanez RG350 and a modified JEM jr, Fender and Squier Stratocaster, a Peavey Wolfgang and a Dillion Les Paul copy. For amplifier, live i just go thru any amp the gig provided, at home i use a Marshall MG15DFX combo.

It doesnt get noisy at all even at the most extreme setting, except if u use it with a distortion pedals with full distortion or high overdrive on the amplifiers. The effects could be weak and great, it depends on ur setting and how u set the other pedals, u need to compromise unless u are into wicked, nasty (but great) sound \nn/ hehehe.

I can get close to certain sound that i want, i dont really try to emulate a lot of other guitarist with the chorus, but mostly either it a subtle, very obvious or something in between. But one my friends do said they heard one of my setting sound like the early 80's sound.

Reliability : 10
Well yes i can depend on it now, after getting use to it and for now i dont really need backup, it from Boss, they are reliable and this pedal have been with me for quite a while (around 7 years and i have 2 of them).

Overall Rating : 8
This is a great pedal either by itself or with other pedals combination, and i either use it on my crunch sounds or clean sounds. I dont really prefer to use a chorus pedal on my lead unless im playing a cover song but usually they use it very very subtle that sometimes u can just ignore and people wont notice :p hehehehe, and i have been playing for 9 to 10 years already and start more serious in the last 7 years. And the other pedals that i use are a Vox Wah, Boss BF-3, CS-3,DS-1 (x2), DD-20 (x3), FV-50H/L, GE-7 (x5), LS-2 (x4),MT-2 (recently bought this back), NS-2, RV-5 and SD-1 (x2).Previously i owned a Boss DD-3's and some from Digitech and Ibanez pedals.

If this pedals were stolen, i just bought it back if i had the cash at that time. My favourite feature on the clean sound is when i set the effect level, tone control and the depth around 3 to 6 o'clock and the rate around 6 to 12 o'clock. For a subtle effect i just set the effect level at 12 o;clock, the tone around 9 to 12 o'clock, the rate around 6 to 12 o'clcok and the depth around 12 to 3 o'clock. Im still trying to find the best setting for my crunch.

My setup right now, the guitars--FV-50H--Vox wah--LS-2 (x2) [the first box, dictated either im going dirty or clean, meanwhile the second one dictated either im going crunch or lead:-
1) clean- CS-3 + GE-7 + CH-1
2) crunch- GE-7 + DS-1 + GE-7 + BF-3 + CH-1
3)lead- GE-7 +SD-1 (x2)
4) from the 1st LS-2 i'm using the A output to a NS-2 and put the
and LS-2 in the loop of the NS-2 and the NS-2 output back to
the 1st LS-2.

--#rd and the 4th LS-2 (which consist of 2 x DD-20 in the A loop and one DD-20 in the B loop with a Boss RV-5, meanwhile the 3rd LS-2 use to cut off the effects from the 4th LS-2.

I'd say to find a good sound out of this pedal is pretty easy, sometimes if you haven't used it for a while it does take some practice but after about 10 minutes you can dial it in pretty close. Pretty easy design to click on as are most boss pedals just press and go.

Sound Quality : 9
I'm using my les paul with this through a palomino 30 watt 2x12 amp and it sounds beautiful and adds a nice texture. I usually don't use distortion with this but sometimes using a wah effect adds a nice control over the chorus. Sometimes it does sound overly chorusy but then you just dial down the effect level and play on.

Reliability : 10
Well being a boss, and having a solid metal frame its pretty durable. I haven't seen any dents or anything with it but i usually take pretty good care of my pedals.

Overall it matches my style of music well (rock-blues-to anything). If it were lost or stolen i would buy another as i like the sound texture it adds to my setup. I compared it to the CE-1 chorus ensemble and i picked this one because the other one just sounded fairly light.

Takes a little time to get your sound, after which you can just leave it and forget it.

Sound Quality : 5
The actual chorus effect itself - the way it modifies the tone is quite nice, but the overall output sounds rather thin and wispy compared to the clean guitar tone. This makes single coil strat pickups sound tinny and a humbucker Les Paul sound like P90's. Ok for an entry level player, but there are better true bypass pedals out there.

Reliability : 5
Ok so far, not had a problem with it. However I'd ALWAYS get a backup because two of my other boss pedals have flaky behavior, one with the power supply and the other with the switching - makes a loud noise when disengaged.

It's an ok pedal for the price. You could gig quite nicely with it. However if you're serious about it and you're in it for the long term, invest in a better made pedal preferably with true bypass and one that doesn't SUCK tone.

The minute I plugged this pedal in at the guitar shop I could instantly dial in the perfect 'Z.Zs Song' tone. this pedal handles both clean and distortion well, and whilst tone-snobs may turn up their nose at this cheap chorus alternative, this pedal is perfectly capable of producing a professional sounding chorus for practical circumstances.

Though there are 'lusher' pedals out there (T.C Electronics chorus & Boss CE-2 spring to mind), the bell-like chimes of this pleasant chorus pedal will certainly not disappoint. For the price this is simply unbeatable! Try and see if you can get a 90s MIJ version second hand.

This pedal is fantastic value for money, and you simply cannot argue with the quality at this price! Sure there are better boutique chorus pedals out there, but alot of professionals and some of the best guitarists in the world actually still prefer the good old sound of a Boss chorus pedal! A great alternative to the astronomically expensive CE-2.

Sound quality is excellent for what I play. I don't want a huge swirly chorus sound, I want my otherwise dry Les Paul to sound a little lush. The CH-1 is perfect for that. It doesn't overdo the chorus effect. I play with all settings around 12 o'clock. Sounds perfect on stage and at home.

This is a great chorus, and you can tweak it with some mods to make it sound really weird. It works perfectly well for me, since I don't need those swirly watery weird sounds. I use it all the time to add some depth and richness to my tone. I don't need anything better.

Ok, I've had Small Clones and everything. I would not say this is the best chorus of all time but it suits perfectly to me.

I must make something clear for all tha young amateurs and begginers out there, who know nothing yeat about stompboxes:

This pedal was launched in 1989 as an analog pedal, and until October 2001 it was. In that month, the CH-1 Schematic suffered a big change and from that date on, the CH-1's are digital as they changed some analog components for digital (cheaper) ones.

So this is the story. Mine is a early 90's and sounds pretty good to me and to the music im into right now.

If your CH-1 is October 2001 or older, Im sorry for you men, you have the wrong guy.

There are many types of music and many types of chorus pedals, before choosing any of them, first try to find out which sound you want and go to the store and let the sales guy show you the material hes got.

When I was young I bought a Small Clone just because this guy Cobain used it before he patheticaly shot himself. And the real story is that I was not after his sound, so my ears got mature and when I found out I wanted something else, I sold it to another iwannabecobain kid.

So my advice is: Be your selves and try to sound like your selves!

P.S: Kurt Cobain shot himself, he is not a model to any of you kids. Im ashamed he used strats and DS-1 as I do.

The manual is as straight forward as it gets.

This may not get the deep, swirling, watery chorus you may get out of the CE-2. I tend to find the CH-1 is for achieving effects mixed with others. This pedal sounds fantastic with distortion and overdrive, achieved the sounds captured by artists such as Omar Rodriguez Lopez and Dean Deleo from the Stone temple Pilots. For a general chorus pedal this wouldnt be as high as an 8, but for the distinctive sound this pedal captures it is a very high mark.

The only problem is, is that unless the E.LEVEL is turned above halfway the effect is barely hearable.

I play grunge, progressive and post hardcore music, and this pedal is great for all. Mixed with lots of different effects is this pedal's biggest strength, and doesn't drown out or get drownwed by other sounds. I play a les paul with an overdrive and distortion OS-2. If i was to lose this pedal, I would definitly purchase this same pedal. My favourite feature on this pedal is the EQ; turned all the way up it sounds like no other chorus available.

Go ahead and buy one, you'll be disappointed at first, but get to know it and you'll love it.

Easy to use. Fiddle with the dials and you quickly get the range of this box.

Sound Quality : 8
First -- this will not make you sound like Kurt Cobain. It's not a deep, sweeping chorus. Second -- it's meant for live performance or high-volume practice. It sounds weak and almost indescernable at low volumes. However at live volumes it really comes through and colors your tone just right. This is one of two chorus pedals I own -- the other is the MXR M-134 stereo chorus. The MXR is overpowering, and I use it for times when I want my tone to sound like it's immersed in chorus, just dripping effect.

Reliability : 10
No probs. Works great.

Overall Rating : 8
This pedal is good at fattening up your tone with a nice volume boost. I like it just for that, and I feel that this is what Roland/Boss was shooting for when they designed it. Very few pro players want a chorus that dominates the tone. It takes away from solid, aunthentic tube tone, and sounds synthetic. If you want to sound like Kurt Cobain or Zakk Wylde, use what they used (Electroharmonix Small Stone for KC, and MXR stereo chorus for Zakk Wylde). In any case, ALWAYS try the unit out before you buy. If you don't, it's your fault if you don't like the effect.

I play all kinds of stuff, mostly alternative rock kinda stuff. I like creating textured and interesting guitar sounds and this is great. Satriani has used this in his rig for at least 10 years, although his is probably analogue. Still, this ounds great, even though it's digital. I spent a long time comparing this the the Chorus Ensemble, the CE-5, and found the CH-1 to be far warmer and less sterile. A great buy, especially at this price!

I bought this pedal really cheap off a guy who was selling all his stuff, and giving up music. At first, I just stuck it on the pedalboard, turned all the knobs to the middle, decided that sounded OK, and left it. After a while, I started getting annoyed by the drop in level and seemingly "thin" quality of the tone. I contemplated buying another chorus pedal, but I decided to sit down and mess with this one. I turned the level up more, and messed with the depth, and messed with the placement in my pedal setup. After a while, I found the sounds I was looking for, and now I'm really impressed by this pedal.

Sound Quality : 8
It's not analog, it's digital. Don't expect it to sound analog. However, with that said, it doesn't sound bad. Pretty shimmery. Can sound very full if you have the right amp and settings. The guitar you play is obviously important too. Playing a guitar with humbuckers through this made a huge difference. I'm into King Crimson and The Police as far as chorus sounds reference, and this will do those sounds easily. It doesn't get as freaky as some other choruses, but for the price Boss charges for these things, it's pretty versatile in my opinion.

I dunno much about the "correct" way to run pedals in a configuration, but I have this set as such: Line 6 DL4 > Boss PH3 Phase Shifter > Danelectro Daddy-O overdrive > Boss DD2 delay > Boss CH1 Super Chorus > Line 6 Verbzilla reverb > Akai Headrush E2 > Boss TU2 tuner. It works pretty damn well in that setup. It's perfect for enhancing the sound of modulation effects.

Reliability : 10
Seems dependable. Boss pedals seem to be very good overall in this area, though I may be having an issue with a PH3 I just bought. Still, I've never had a Boss pedal crap out on me, so that's a good thing.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I dunno. I've never called them.

It's a good chorus pedal. It's not the Holy Grail of chorus pedals, but it's worth it if you put some time into it. Why the hell would you want to spend $100 on a chorus pedal anyway? If this got stolen, I'd probably try a few other pedals, but decide that this was the one and come back to it. Go for it.

At first I thought the sound was very weak and to pop chorusy for me. I went on the roland site and found the tech doc. and looked through the effects guide. I found 2 setting that are great that I never even thought I could do with this pedal. The first is the "arpeggios" setting, it sounds great for jazz and shimmer, kinda of analogish to me with a little swirl. The next is the vibrato setting, little weak but really cool sound. I like those two settings the best. These pedals are cheap and are very versitile.

If you can't figure this out, you're probably deaf. It's an effect pedal afterall. Just twirl the knobs 'til is sounds good.

Sound Quality : 8
I used it with a Fender American Standard Strat w/after market (Seymour Duncan) pickups into a Marshall amp. Sounds warm and subtle, sort of "delicate" to me. I liked it a lot. Even with the dials maxed out it has usable sound (although not for my playing style). The EQ knob really does make a difference (which I had doubted before trying it). I think it sounds really good--not metallic sounding to me, which is one thing that I HATE in any effect except distortion (where it belongs).

Reliability : 1
Boooooo!
Everyone says they're built like tanks. Well, maybe the outside is. I bought mine used (my bad) and the A Output wasn't working after I got it home. Had it evaluated by a professional electronics tech. He said it's probably a factory defect. At his shop, we called Roland/Boss. They verified it sounded like it was not working properly--since it was in Like New condition (but still used) they wouldn't even give me any help or suggestions. I took it home, I opened it up and fixed it myself. It worked fine for another week...then neither output works. The jacks are mounted to PCM boards an held to the case via washers and nuts. The boards inside the unit are NOT secured to anything but are free-floating. Anyway it probably shouldn't have had this problem.

Customer Support : 1
Pffftttt! whatever!
I bought a used pistol once that turned out to have a flaw. I sent it back to the manufacturer (Beretta) they sent me a NEW one no problem.
Boss?! No way. Unless you bought it new, from an authorized dealer, and have the original receipt...you're outta luck. No flexibility on their part--they don't even want to hear it. They rest on the reputation of their pedals and not on the reputation of the company's customer service.
If you buy one of these (or any Boss pedal!), you'd better hope it never breaks. 5 year warranty IF you buy NEW from an authorized dealer only (better check your guitar store's status!) and you'd better keep that receipt. No if/and/or buts.

Overall Rating : 4
The design is decent and the sound is really good. I can't really fault the pedal--just the company for lack of customer service/care. The pedal has a pretty good sound to it--but it won't really give you any "weird" effect. You might try the Boss CE-5 for that or another effect altogether (like a flange). The CH-1 has more of an old skool vibe, as opposed to a digital/metal vibe. The box is solid and the dials are pretty solid too. The insides are NOT secured to anything and are fragile PCM boards.
The companies customer service is worthless! Bottom line on that: They won't back up their product. The will only fulfill their legal obligation...period.
If I can find the replacement parts (maybe guts from another CH-1), I'm willing to repair it. The pedal DOES sound good.
--but--
If it breaks would I replace it? Funny...
It DID! And I'm replacing it with something else...probably a Danelectro Cool Cat (a NEW one!).

Well if you want a lush, deep, good chorus sound this is not the unit for you - don't even bother. Impossible to get a saturated chorus sound - no usable tones here - you can barely even hear an effect in mono. I wanted something like my DOD FX 65 stereo chorus which i got in 1995 - but this was sooooo disappointing. For the $100 i paid i felt totally ripped off - for the sound it produces, it should cost $25 out the door with the ac adaptor included - for $99 it is a piece of crap - not worthy of its price tag. I returned it after about 2 or 3 days and exchanged it for an Ibanez TS9 for the same price - now there is an effect unit worthy of a $99 price tag. My opinion is that for $99 an effect unit should completely satisfy your wants/needs and it should leave you not even wanting another effect unit - it shouldn't make you regret buying it after a day or two of casual jamming. Piece of crap! I have a better chorus effect in my Digitech Desktop Guitar Processor which i bought for $99. This box is awful enough sounding to scare me away from ever buying or even testing/using/borrowing-for-just-one-show any other Roland/Boss pedal. How hard is it to get down a chorus effect? Take one signal, then split into two, then adjust the amount of signal number two, and the delay time and rate of signal number two. Whatever this pedal does, it doesn't turn the two signals into lush stereo magic, so what did i pay $99 for if not lush stereo magic? Nothing.

Sound Quality : 1
I am using a '73 Fender Bassman 100 tube amp head which sounds good at any setting - also noiseless - playing through celestion speakers in a marshall cab - all good gear - clear and noiseles - guitar is mahogany (e.g. gibson explorer/thunderbird). Both guitar and amp are near-flawless and in perfect states of repair. By all means, my rig will allow the best to come out in a pedal. If it doesnt' sound good in this amp it won't sound good anywhere - well, it just doesn't get the job done even with a good tube amp. Its a chorus for amatuer musicians only - even if you are a pro and are on a budget and you really need a chorus you wouldn't want anyone to hear you using this thing - this is a toy chorus to be toyed around with, no serious musician would use this in front of an audience or for recording. If i had a gig on the beach in the sand then i would use it because i wouldn't care if it got sand in it and got ruined. I wanted that big lush chorus sound like Kurt Cobain on Nevermind - the dreamy watery like shimmering wall of glass chorus - this is just some el-cheapo mimmicking box. And the guy who said he can get the Bryan Adams tone is an amatuer too if he thinks this thing sounds even half-way decent or close to the 'run to you' tone. Bryan Adams' tone on 'Run To You' is not attainable with this unit - Bryan Adams' has a much richer, more-proper, lush, penetrating, and obviously higher-quality chorus tone on that song that Roland only wishes this unit could mimmick. Don't be fooled, these guys are just stoked on a new unit, they would probably rave about anything after 5 minutes out of the box. This is a very low-quality chorus - if you are serious about your chorus tone save your money and buy something like a TC-Chorus or an Electro-Harmonix Poly Chorus.

Reliability : No Opinion
No, you can't even depend on it to deliver ok-sounding chorusing effects, this is only the second pedal i have ever wanted to return, and its the first pedal i actually have returned. Its a terrible value.

Customer Support : No Opinion
After this piece of crap, i will never use another Roland/Boss effect unit (or any gear) again. Boss sucks, Roland sucks. The lesson? Always go boutique, if you can't afford to go boutique, just save your money until you can afford to go boutique. You will be happier to use no pedals for another month rather than affording this 'compromise' now. Go boutique, mass produced pedals are always crap.

Overall Rating : 1

Setup 1: Rhodes => BBE Preamp + Sonic Maximizer => Boss CH-1 => Fender Hot Rod. Perfect for having some fun at home, for small gigs or rehersals. Sounds great.
Setup 2: Rhodes => BBE => Boss => STEREO P.A. system or similar. Not so aggressive as Setup 1, but more cool, sophisticated, floating, spacey...you know what I mean :)

Really easy to get a good sound out of this pedal, unlike many pedals there is no real terrible settings. Except I don't like the rate up all the way just makes your guitar sound like an out of tune, alien spaceship. Many comes with some sample settings, I prefer just to mess around with a pedal to get sounds I want out of it.

Sound Quality : 9
Not noisy, cuts a bit of gain but it's allright it fattens up the sound and with the EQ knob set a little warmer than without the pedal I expect that. The sound was allright-pretty good, but then I bought a new amp and used the pedal in stereo it sounds amazing especially with my new amp powering the old amp.
Sound Quality 7.5 with mono, 9 in stereo.

If it was stolen, I would have to wait a while but eventually I would get this back into my rig, unless I managed to get ahold of a cheap stereo chorus.

I use this with both a Gibson Les Paul and a Fender USA Telecaster, through a Laney VC30 class A tubeamp.

Fantastic sound. Not as deep and luscious as my EHX Small Clone (which is nice too), but thanks to its crisp character the CH-1 is definitely more suited for 80s/new wave/gothrock sounds. Exactly what I was looking for.
By the way, Robert Smith of The Cure uses this!! Sounds good with distortion too, but back off with the depth control.

I traded this for a EHX Big Muff... Best deal I ever made, as I HATED that crappy big muff (I wonder why it's so popular?!?).

What I love about the SuperChorus, is that it can be very subtle if I want it too. It enhances my clean sound, without being too obvious. On the other hand, with the rate at 0 and depth at 10, a flanger-like sound can be achieved.

This is a perfect match for the music I play. My current band plays dreamy indie rock with new wave influences and occasional noisy outbursts... Imagine The Cure meets The Cardigans meets Sonic Youth, or something like that.

I've been playing for about 15 years, owned tons of different gear, but this is definitely a keeper.

It's not too terribly difficult to use. There are 4 knobs (as many already know) and 2 outputs. It's not to difficult to figure out, as mine didn't come with the manual. I'm used to the old 2 knob chorus pedals out there like the CE-2 and Ibanez CS-9, but it's not like there is a big learning curve with the 2 extra knobs.

Sound Quality : 8
I use this through a Bad Cat Cub II and a Fender Super Champ, and sometimes when I don't feel like firing up a tube amp, my Peavey Studio Pro 112('03 model). Adds a little noise but nothing worth complaining about. The effect is pretty subtle (which I like) and while it sounds good, it's not over the top great. Keep in mind too that I only use chorus on clean sounds for a little atmosphere. It is analog, but it's not quite a warm as the older CE-2 or a Choralflange (of course).

These are very good units if buy them used, as I did. I can't say that I would pay $80.00 for a new one, I'd most likely get the Ibanez CS-9 RI instead. Pretty good. Sounds good in mono, and you can get a lot of variety. My only complaint is that there is not a whole lot of depth, especially in stereo mode. It just kind of "sits atop" your sound. To counter this, I turn the "wet" amp's bass up a lot more than the "dry" amp, and that helps, but it's still pretty transparent. It is a really nice chorus if you want a slow, watery chorus. It reminds me of Rush-just a subtle, fairly slow chorus.

One word-Boss.

The sound has some left to be desired. A CE-2 sounds way better; fuller and deeper, but it's a mono unit. For a good stereo unit that is fairly affordable, this is about as good as it gets. I really like the Uni-vibe chorus, but it's fairly expensive, and it's not the "traditional" chorus sound. But this unit is way better than a DOD ice box or anything else in this price range.

I run this through a Marshall slit channel 50 watt reverb amp. I use a Washburn EA-20 acoustic, a Washburn C-64-CE electric nylon, & a 1979 gibson Les Paul Custom with it. It has a tad bit of noise, but no more than any effect pedal.

This is the best chorus pedal I've ever used. It actually enhances the instrument's tone & sound the way a pedal is supposed to do! I also got it at a fantastic price. I highly reccommend using e-bay to buy effects pedals. There are lots of them on there, & you can get them at a reasonable price. Just watch the auctions closely, set a maximum price, & wait. If you lose an auction, just go to another. It took me 4 auctions to get this pedal at the price I wanted, & I'm glad I waited! The Boss CH-1 Super Chorus is a fantastic pedal that delivers the goods.

Easy to use. The manual is pretty good.

I'm using this with super strats mostly. Marshall TSL 602 combo and a 1960A cabinet. It's not noisy. Boss stuff is high quality. I can get a Leslie cabinet like sound with this. Think 'It don't easy' by Ringo Starr. And if I really want it over the top I can add a Boss DD-5 digital delay to it. I mostly like adding a little swirl to my lead sounds. It kind of reminds me of Pink Floyd. The sound is more pronounced the cleaner the amp is. It also sounds good with distortion too. You can go stereo with this pedal. I chose this over the Boss CE-5 chorus ensemble because I felt that there was too much going on with that.

Reliability : 10
It's a Boss. Unless I go throwing it at trains or something it should last a longtime. :)

Boss is hard to contact. I wish their website had more information about specificatons etc.. But they make really great products! So I can't complain. I mean, a great reliable product doesn't need customer support.

I play 70s and 80s rock and metal. I've been playing 28 years. I like the simplicity of it. And the fact that it's a Boss. It's a fun pedal. I started using it again after buying it about two years ago. I don't know if I'd buy it again. Maybe. Or maybe I'd buy an Uni-vibe.

Easy as. No editing really. Requires some knowledge of the parameters of modulation effects but very simple. Bought it 2nd hand, so no manual but not required.

THIS IS NOT A CE-1,2,3 OR 5. It is made with a different function. Why does everyone whine about it not sounding like a CE-5? Why, then, would Boss make 2 different pedals that sound the same? IT IS MEANT TO SOUND DIFFERENT TO A CE-5 PEOPLE. It is obviously a lot more subtle and it does what it is meant to do incredibly well with no tangible noise and at a decent price.

Only problem sometimes is a very slight lass of treble if you have it set to high. My setup:
88 Fender Strat->Boss OS-2->Boss ME-50->Boss CH-1 then to two amps: a Vox Cambridge 30R and Yamaha G50-210. This is a dreamy setup and the CH-1 completes everything by splitting the signal into a lush stereo signal. I hate the stereotypical chorus tone but the CH-1 just fills out the tone and makes it stereo. That's all I ask.

Reliability : 10
Boss...

I just worked out that I've owned 16 Boss products over the years. NONE of them has EVER given me a problem. Out of all the brands of any product, I would choose Boss. I've even had trouble with Sony, Panasonic and Toyota, but never Boss.

Customer Support : 3
Here's where they fall apart. Maybe they're relying on the quality of their products, so they don't bother with customer service. But as soon as they don't make it anymore, they wash their hands of it. Pretty ordinary stuff, especially when compared to companies like Zoom, who don't have the quality of product, but have an excellent 'discontinued items' page on their website.

Overall Rating : 10
We range from slightly aggressive emo to ambient guitar indie pop and I have been playing for 15 years. As I said, I only wanted a chorus to fatten my tone and after all the other effects, split it to stereo. This CH-1 does that, no complaints. And at a reasonable price. I just wish people would stop comparing it to the CE-5- it isn't a CE-5, it doesn't pretend to be. If you wanted a CE-5, why did you buy a CH-1???

Everything is pretty self-explanatory. Level of effect, if you want the tone to be more high- or low-ended, rate and depth. Couldn't be simpler. Easy to get a good sound out of this. Manual probably explains everything, but I haven't looked at it seeing as it's so easy to use.

Sound Quality : 10
I run a Mexican Telecaster w/ a Hot Rails bridge pickup installed -> Fender PT-10 -> Crybaby Wah -> Ibanez DS7 -> Boss CH-1 -> Boss CS-3 -> Boss DD-20 -> Fender FM65R. This effect completes everything perfectly, no matter what settings I have. Great for a Floydish clean, ambient tone or adding some flavor into heavy solos. Not too subtle but not too dominant either - I actually chose this over the CE-5 because that seemed too subtle for my liking. It adds very little noise, if any at all. Adds a lot of color to your tone. Works with all kinds of music, from Floyd to Alice in Chains to GnR and anything else you can think of.

Reliability : 10
Rumor has it that after a nuclear war, the only things left on earth will be roaches and Boss pedals. And I can't argue this; hasn't caused me any problems.

I play all sorts of music and I can usually fit the CH-1 into everything and make it sound good. I actually can't seem to find a way to make it sound BAD. If I lost it or it was stolen I'd get another one ASAP! Best chorus pedal I've played, only one I can think of that surpasses it is the CE-20, and thats a bit of overkill in my opinion. I only need one setting but it's so versatile that it fits with everything. Fantastic pedal

Very easy to use. Knobs are self explanitory. Consult the manual if your having trouble.

I'm using a Fender Super 112 (6L6's 1x12 combo) Various guitars, mostly Fat Strat & Les Paul. Other effect in the chain are : Keeley modded Boss Blues Driver, Keeley modded Tube Screamer, Boss DD-3, Boss CH-1.

This is my second time around with this pedal. I had one a short time ago, and thought after reading some other input, that i might like the vintage Ibanez cs-9 chorus better. So I found a used one at a guitar show and traded my original CH-1 for the CS-9. I realized after spending some quality time with the Ibanez unit, that it did not interact very well with overdrive tones. At least not to me. It seemed to accentuate the higher freqencies, and the overdrive sounded a little shrill. However, it DOES sound fabulous with a clean setting! So, considering that I play with at least some overdrive most of the time, I decided to get another CH-1. The CH-1 is more subtle than the CS-9, but I really don't like my effects to be " in-your-face". Like others have said, it will fatten things up without being real obvious.

Reliability : 9
I've been using Boss pedal forver. Never a problem. I've had my Tube Screamer for less time than any of my Boss pedals, and I've already had to replace the swithch.

I play mostly blues based rock covers with a band that gigs 2 or 3 times a month. I've been doing the guitar thing for about 27 yrs.
Considering that I came back once, I guess I would again if anything happend to this CH-1. It seems to be the perfect fit for what I'm doing. I did compare it to the CE-5, but I couldn't hear any noticeable difference. The saleman did try and talk me into some other chorus......." the most awesome chorus you ever heard" .........maybe so, but it was also the most expensive chorus I ever heard. Besides, it wouldn't fit on my pedalboard which would open another can of worms.

Like the PW-2 which I also have, there are just four knobs - effect level, EQ, rate and depth. Twiddle, follow your ears for whatever music you're doing. This is really easy to use. A 'manual' is included but you won't need it.

Sound Quality : 10
My main instruments are synths and keys and I have recently taken up bass guitar. I bought this pedal to liven up the static sounds of some of my really old stuff - and that it really does well. I also have an Ibanez GSR 200 bass guitar which I tend to just play through the mic input on my hi-fi or through one of the channels on my Behringer MX2004, and the chorus sounds really cool. Some say that too much effect can make the sound too processed. This is true but it also has the scope for making a bland bass sound more synth-ey - great with keyboards for electronic music.

Reliability : 9
Excepting it runs on a PP3 nine volt battery (although there is a power adaptor input) all boss's pedals are bomb proof milled from what looks like - and certainly feels like - a solid piece of steel. Nice thick paint finish, metal panel underneath the knobs and chunky input jacks. An elephant could stand on this! Even the boxes for these pedals are pretty substantial - should last forever.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I cannot comment on Roland/Boss support as I have not needed to contact them... yet anyway.

Overall Rating : 9
My style of music has been described by many as having 'Ambient, complex instrumental textures'. (I'm not sure what style I'd call it myself to be honest!)I compose instrumental music using electronic, synthetic sounds, piano and strings and heavily layered pads and harmonies.

I have been playing for sixteen years and in that time have acquired a lot of equipment - in order of acquisition:
Yamaha PSS 470 keyboard
Technics EX50 double manual organ
Original 1960's Stylophone
Korg 01/wFD Synth
Evolution MK-125 MIDI Controller
Casio CT-101 vintage keyboard
Peavey KB-100 Combo Amp
Yamaha DJX Keyboard
Yamaha DX7 Synth
Fostex VF08 Hard Disk Recorder
Behringer MX2004A Mixer
Oberheim MC-1000 88 note weighted MIDI Master Controller
Korg MicroKORG Synth
Boss PW-2 Power Driver
Ibanez GSR-200 Bass Guitar
Boss CH-1 SUPER Chorus

...oh and the kitchen sink!

Lost or Stolen? Yeah I'd get this one again or try the Bass Chorus (I bought this one because it was ten quid cheaper and I didn't know the difference!) I intend to collect a few of these in the future (Flanger, Phaser, Reverb...) becase you can connect them in a variety of different ways to achieve many different effects.

Love - painted my favourite blue, really well made, looks cool.
Hate - not so much a hate, but never a fan of PP3 square batteries connected by a flimsy wire. Care required here.
Favourite feature - can turn a boring, bland, static mono sound into a cool stereo one with interesting animation and movement - always a good thing...
I did not compare the CH-1 to anything else.
Wish list - be cool if it ran on a single AA battery with the connectors mounted inside the pedal rather than that flimsy wire.
This pedal sure does help me make music. It works well with my PW-2 which I have used to distort the sounds of my old Casio - from bland to lead synth! Amazing!

It is pretty easy to get a good sound out of this. I recommend leaving the level and EQ knobs at 12 o'clock, and playing with the rate and depth knobs. I leave the rate knob at 7 o'clock and the depth at 9 o'clock to fatten the sound just a little without making the tone sound too digital.

Sound Quality : 8
Some people say this pedal is subtle, I agree. You need to increase the depth significantly to make this pedal stand out, especially if you are in a heavy metal band and looking to fatten up your tone. I use a Schecter C1 Classic ->Dunlop wah-wah->MXR compressor-> Boss Metal Zone->Boss EQ->MXR Phase 90->Marshall JCM2000. Maybe I'm not a big fan of the chorus 'sound', but it seems that when the rate and depth are turned up, the guitar has a sterile, digital sound, like an overprocessed guitar tone. But for what it does, it's a good pedal.

Reliability : 9

I play mostly classic and power metal. This pedal is good for fattening up the sound a bit, but I don't use it for anything else. I find that it makes the tone sound too processed if the knobs are turned up too high.

Im just 12 yrs. old, but have been playing for two years now though, so the pedal has to be simple and to the point, once you understand what knob is for , you can get out every single toneyou imagine from the pedal. Thats what I love of the BOSS stompoxes

Sound Quality : 9
I play it through a Vintage style Fender Nashville with a silverface Twin Reverb, and this pedal adjusts very well to the sound I look forward in my grungy radiohead kind of music,, specially with arpeggios and some solos, if you combine it with a Big Muff it gets the best distortion for solos I have heard.

I have never had any problems with my boss pedals ( DS-1, super chorus, my Flanger, Tremolo ) but I have a friend whos pedal was bought by the internet and came in bad shape, and he called Roland, and they sent him a brand new pedal with a bog apology letter, so I guess it is good.

I love its design to make a great sound out of a simple stompbox. I prefered this to the EHX small clone cause this ones sound is a lot warmer. Its a master key in soundS like Radiohead or Nirvana, ad a very good choice to create nice riffs,

This pedal is very easy to use. I have all the knobs at 12 o clock with the far right knob cranked all the way to the right. Even a two year old could do it!

Sound Quality : 9
I use an Epiphone Les Paul Standard/Fender Fat Strat MIJ with a Boss Metalzone, Dallas Rangemaster treble boost homemade clone, EHX Small Stone and a home made tube amp. The pedal creates a lush sound which makes for very atmospheric playing. The trick with this pedal though (as all effects) is to use sparingly. Nirvana's chorus sound is easy to dial in but I don't really play covers so I can't give you many other examples. A great sounding pedal.

This pedal rocks in a big way! Compare it to ANY other chorus pedal and it will always be a one sided battle. The depth and lushness of the sound is leagues above the CE-5 and its cheeper too? - work that one out! I play a Les Paul through a Marshall Jackhammer and this pedal, running it in stereo through my Marshall and home AV system as a second channel and the sound is second to none. Sounds beautiful clean but works amazingly with really heavy distortion to produce that vintage Zakk Wylde sound from Ozzy's 'Live and Loud album'

This unit was made with the gigging and recording musician in mind. It is easy to get a good sound on just about any setting, and it gets very vocal, clear, and robust tones with a Strat, Les Paul, or any hollowbody. I was very happy with it's qaulity for the money.

Sound Quality : 10
It sounds very good with tube or solid state amps. For my Jazz setup, I use a hollowbody guitar through a Vox Pacemaker with a midiverb and this unit and that is all I need. It makes my guitar sound very vocal and clear, like Wes Montgomery or George Benson. In my electric setup (Fender Strat) It works wonders for lead guitar. Makes all the notes clearer and even adds a bit of sustain. Bear in mind that my attack is almost abusive, so that may have something to do with it.

I have a really embarassing setup, so I won't bother commenting. It's got a really good range of sounds, you can go from Nirvana to Metallica to Guns and Roses. It may not be able to make you feel sea sick, but it does have a nice deep sound, from water-like to just thickening the guitar sounds.

The knobs are pretty easy to understand. The EQ knob is basically the 'Tone' knob on other boss pedals. Full EQ boots highs.
The manual is pretty poor just a folded A3 piece of paper, not even any sample settings.

Sound Quality : 7
Okay, if you want a cutting edge super loud and vibrating chorus, look at the CE-5, if you want a more subtle vintage sounding chorus, the CH-1 will be more you thing. Opening it up and close inspection shows the unit to be analog. The one thing I noticed about this pedal is that if your using it on a small (< 10 inch cone) amp or quietly, it seems to have little effect. Crank the volume and gain on your amp and the pedal will reveal itself. For old Metallica sound it's great. For 'Come as You Are' Nirvana sound, you will have to boost everything (bar Rate), and even then your probably better off with a CE-5.
A very nice sounding pedal.

Reliability : 9
Usual Boss reliabilty, I have Japanese pedals that are rustbuckets (literally) and still work fine.

As I said before, think of this as a CE-2 pedal with a level control, an EQ control and a Stereo output. If that's what you want from your pedal then you will be happy with this pedal. Otherwise, try the Chorus Ensemble (CE-5).

I took the plunge and bought this when I was a beginning guitarist back in 1990 and I didn't even know what it did! But I saw an advert with Tony Hicks of The Hollies endorsing it so that was good enough for me! Upon figuring out what it was for it was very easy to operate. Chorus is all down to taste really and the CH-1 presents no problem in getting the sound you want

Sound Quality : 10
Can't fault it. I don't use it as much these days as I use a Zoom multi-effects unit and it's much easier to use the preset sounds rather than tweak these and remove the chorus just for the sake of using the CH-1. But if I want to have a sound with only chorus then I will always use my CH-1 over any other choruses I have - the rest just don't come close. The CH-1 has a lush warmth that I have never heard in any other chorus

Reliability : 10
I've had it for over 12 and a half years. It has been gigged many, many times, transported all over the place, dropped, kicked, stamped on, been tripped over and has literally barely a scratch! It looks almost as new and it has never required any maintainence. The rotary pots are still silent, demonstrating no crackle and the on/off switch works fine. Can't find a bad point about it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had any need to deal with them.

I'm using this effect with a Fender Blues Junior and a Godin LG. When the CH-1 is activated it adds a little noise which increases as you turn up the gain on the amp. This effect sounds ok however it is very weak, I also own a TC Electronics SCF and the Boss CH-1 is not even close when I do an A/B comparison. Of the Boss effects that I own (TR-2 and DD-3) the CH-1 is the worst. I will probably keep this unit as it does provide the chorus effect however it's not very versatile and tends to get lost in the mix. Also if your looking for a vintage sounding chorus look for another unit, I would classify the TR-2 as a clean sounding chorus.

I didn't expect the TR-2 to perform as good as the SCF which sets the standard for a clean sounding chorus however it still fell short of my expectations. Yes it does the clean chorus effect and it comes in a well built compact package however the effect is weak and not very versatile - I would look at other units before considering the CH-1.

If u don`t belive this, just open it :) Same BBD chips as in Danelectro "Cool Cat" or in best Boss chorus CE-2 (MN 3007 & MN 3101 Controller CCD Chips). So please be sure wha you`re writing, thanx. Yeah, it sounds not so warm as others, but it`s analog anyhow. God bless!

If you can turn a few knobs then you will be able to use this pedal. Self explanitory for anyone. I didn't need the manual because I was able to get the sound i wanted by just fiddling with it for a couple of minutes.

Sound Quality : 10
I am using this pedal with an Ibanez SA160QM, and into a Marshall Valvestate 102R. This pedal gives me the exact sound i want. I mainly use this effect on a clean sound because it gives it more depth and i have always liked chorus on my clean channel.

It's a Boss, so it's built like a tank. I have always used Boss stompboxes, so i know that this pedal will last forever.

This pedal will never fail me. I stick to what i know. "If it's not Boss, it's not the biz". I wanted a good chorus pedal, so i went out and bought one. Considering the sound, these pedals are definately worth the money. If it was stolen, i wouldn't think twice about buying another.

Very easy. And pretty versatile also.

Sound Quality : 10
This is THE chorus pedal to get if you want that nice CURE chorus sound. It has a VERY nice warm depth, and a nice "sparkle" also.
I've owed a Small clone and ended up selling it because it just took over the sound completely. It was WAY, WAY too deep, and too bassy. Had no "sparkle"
So then I moved on to a Boss CE-5 chorus ensemble. That sound was OK, but it was missing warmth, killed your low end (bass), and just didn't seem to have the depth I was looking for.
I'm telling you! I'm a BIG chorus fan that has tried MANY different pedals, including choruses on multi-FX, and THIS is the one that has
finally satisfied me. Try it yourself. Go to ANY Guitar center and just compare this to the CE-5. It it SO easy to tell the difference. You'll notice that this CH-1 is deeper and warmer, yet it still has that sparkly high end.

I play melodic emotional hard rock inspired by
Cure, U2, radiohead, Dredg, At the drive in, COLD...
I heard a friend play some "Sundays" songs, and the tone on the guitars really stood out for me more than anything at all.
This comes closest to that sound, and may be what they used, but I do know that Robert Smith of the Cure, and many other pros use THIS for their chorus.

I'm not a believer that anything is "plug 'n play", but this pedal is definitely on of the easier ones to tweak within seconds. If you know what you're looking for, you can almost nail it without even playing, especially if you're fairly familiar with chorus in general. And it's very easy to go throw several settings fairly quickly.

Sound Quality : 9
I use a variety of Telecasters and Stratocasters through Fender and Vox amps. This is an all-around great chorus pedal. The EQ function makes it very versatile. Rolling off some of the high end makes it a little more subtle, but with a definite added thickness. Sounds really cool with a big chunk of warm distortion to go along. Turning up the higher end gives it a modern-shredder-80s-instrumental-jazz kind of vibe, which isn't too bad. It sounds a little more synthetic and almost keyboardy, which could work for somethings.

With the rate up, you can get a wobble, Leslie-ish sound, but Rotovibes and other more specific Vibe units do this job a lot better. It does sound pretty cool when the effect level is rolled off a bit and the neck pickup is used, yielding a Rhodes-y plunk.

This pedal behaves well with other pedals, too. It doesn't screw with your original tone too much, and rarely disagrees with anything you pair it up with. I have yet to try it with a fuzz however.

Reliability : 10
OH yeah, this thing is probably solidly. Structurally, Boss probably has one of the best pedal designs out there.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 9
I play a lot of different styles, but mostly hang in the brit pop/garage rock/shoegazer/blues/classic rock vein. I own a myriad of overdrives, a few fuzzes, a few distortions, delays...maybe about 15 pedals altogether. I've always been a fan of Boss pedals, and own several.

Basically, I like the "chunk" factor of this pedal. It really sounds fantastic with the highs rolled off a little and paired with a warm, thick distortion. I'm not really a clean chorused type of guy, but the pedal does shine in this area too. Basically, it does everything very well, and could probably satisfy most chorus needs with aplomb. The stereo outs and the EQ function, once again, really make this a great value.

Squier Jagmaster/Dean ML/modded Epi Strat-copy --> Boss DS-1 --> CH-1 --> Crybaby --> Marshall Valvestate 8100 half stack.

No matter what I can't get a bad sound out of this pedal. Turn all the knobs all the way up for a strong, fast, watery sound. Back off a bit and you can achieve a perfect '80s chorus sound ala Slash on "Paradise City." Familiar with the loss of sound when you solo after a chorded passage? No longer is a second guitarist necessary with this baby. Simply kick it in when you go into your solo and voila! It fills out the sound perfectly.

Reliability : 7
I'm hesitant to rate any Boss product in this category as I've had the switch in my DS-1 fail on me once before, although it was after 3 or 4 years of constant abuse. I probably could have sent it back in to Boss and had them service the pedal, but you can buy a new DS-1 for probably the same price as it would be to have one serviced! But as far as my CH-1 goes, I've never had a problem with it, although it doesn't work with an adapter (it was given to me by a friend). I'd use it on a gig without a backup, but that's only because I don't use it a whole lot.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never dealt with Boss.

Overall Rating : 8
I originally got mine because I'm a huge Nirvana fan and my friend had one lying around his house. Apparently someone left it there a long time ago and he's a drummer, so he had no use for it. It works great and I love playing with the settings (there are so many different sounds you can get with this thing), but I can't quite replicate Kurt Cobain's chorus sound. I'd replace it if it were stolen, but I'd probably check out some Electro-Harmonix products first.

Like all Boss pedas a breeze to use if you know what you bought the pedal for!?

level -> EQ -> Rate -> Depth

Normal chorus knobs, eq will provide hours of head scratching trying to decide where you like it best. But all useable.

Sound Quality : 10
My setup is Ibanez RG770 or Ibanez JEM 7vwh -->cs-3 --> sansamp gt2 (valve emulator) ---> ds-1 ---> BOSS CH-1 CHORUS --> dd-5

It seems like a clear pedal with no noticeable noise.

The chorus sound is great. Its a bog standard useable chorus i.e made for a sutble standard effect rather than weird wacky stuff. BUT that is what I bought it for.

Plug in and play - there's not much more to it. The manual for this particualr model is kind of confusing at first, but I see no need for it anyway. The most attractive feature on this pedal is it's simplicity. It's the reason I bought it instead the slightly more sophisticated CE-5.

Sound Quality : 9
The sound I get out of this pedal is great. The simpicity helps as well. I play and Epiphone Scroll 550 through a Peavey Bandit 112 and it sounds great. I personally prefer a reduced rate of pitch and greater depth, but you can create a cool underwater sort of sound if you max out all the dials. Combined with distortion it sounds terrible, but I think that's to be expected. When played clean it sounds awesome and even better when combined with and acoustic simulator. My only suggestion is that for the price unless you use a chorus pedal a lot it's not worth the price wait till it goes on sale. What's the point of buying a pedal you'll need for maybe 2 songs?

Reliability : 10
Will last a lifetime - even if abused.

I play mainly hard rock, so this bad boy doesn't get used often, but it is a great pedal. If you have to pay full price than I suggest getting a CE-5 Chorus Ensemble - they are the same price (street) and that pedal seems like a better investment. If you're not going to use it a lot and if the pedal is full price, save your money and buy a better guitar or something, but if you can get it on sale this pedal is awesome. I bought it for that reason and the simplicity factor. The CE-5 seems like it has too many bells and whistles, something I didn't need. Overall a good pedal.

Okie. Here is where it counts. I won't compare this with those vintage or analog chorus pedals. The CH-1 will only give you a normal chorus effect and no more. No warble, no wacky stuffs. Just a standard chorus sound. But that's all I wanted in a chorus! This is just a basic chorus that can make you sound like all those chorus you hear out there. Why are all the people slamming this chorus, saying it sound like shit. If it really make you think it sound bad, either you did not spend enough time tweaking or you're just sprouting nonsense.

It dosen't get prisitne sound quality from me of course. It's not a prisitne sounding chorus. But it does all the things a chorus should do.

Excellent pedal! It gives you a nice chorus effect without camouflaging your amps tone. I tried many differnt brands of pedals but nothing came close.I bought the Boss CE-5 previous to this but it seemed to lack body/fullness.I play through a late 70's Marshall JMP MkII 100w head,so I'm very particular about the tone. This is one of the most killer sounding heads' that I've ever played through.

*I'm using this one with a (believe it) bass guitar...if you're into Goth or other Dark stuff, it's probably more the way to go compared to a dedicated bass-pedal, because it's more extreme with a bass.
If you're looking for very crazy sounds like MEPHISTO WALZ did it, try this: Put two cables into the outs to activate the stereo-mode, but only feed the wet signal to the amp, letting the 2nd one alone (you could also use just a plug for that): BOIOOIOIOIO....!
*Noise in modern pedals is a little less.

Sound Quality : 10
Excellent. It does a chorus effect without colouring your original guitar/amp tone. I tried a Boss CE-5 but it seemed to thin out the sound so the guitar sounded artificial somehow. With this CH-1 I can set it so that there is a strong 'wibble-wobble' chorus effect or with a subtle barely-there effect with no change to the original sound and tone at all. The trick is the EQ knob. I have it down low and I can get a nice subtle effect that makes my guitar sound richer and more lush without sounding effected. Abit like 2 guitars playing the same part. If I turn it off the guitar just sounds drier. A more pronounced effect is possible as well with a turn of a knob.

I do abit of everything in a wedding/bar band. I use teles and Fender amps and I'm pretty fussy. I like a simple good sound that leaves it up to me to create textures and variety....much like a good quality acoustic guitar does. A good Telecaster and a good tube amp does that so any effects I use are pretty subtle. A Boss EQ pedal as a slight midrange solo boost, this CH-1 to add a bit of lushness and a Danelectro PB&J mini echo pedal. It's sometimes hard to tell if I have any of them on or not....the idea is to make the sound richer and a little better without being obviously effected. The CH-1 does it really well. It suits me perfectly.

The CH-1 has four knobs: Effect Level, Equalization, Rate, and Depth. Not a complicated pedal, really.

Sound Quality : 5
My setup is as follows: 1977 Fender Stratocaster > Ernie Ball Volume pedal > Electar PBX-1000 Pedalboard (which contains the following Boss pedals: Boss CS-2 Compressor/Sustainer > Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter > Boss BD-2 Blues Driver > Boss OD-3 Overdrive > Boss PS-5 Super Shifter > Boss DD-5 Digital Delay > Boss DD-3 Digital Delay > Boss PN-2 Tremolo/Pan > Boss BF-3 Flanger > Boss CE-3 Chorus) > Korg G4 Rotating Speaker Simulator > Alesis Microverb > stereo into two silverface Fender Twin Reverbs.

You'll note that I do not have the CH-1 on my pedalboard. This is because I returned the CH-1 the day after I bought it. (My mistake: I gave it just quick check at the music store and thought I could tweak it to my tastes when I got it home.)

The CH-1 made my tone unbearably antiseptic and sparkly--so clean and sharp it almost made my ears bleed. No matter how I tweaked it, the CH-1 sounded digital and cold, sapping all of my tone's warmth and character. Plus, when used in stereo, the wet-signal-in-one-amp/dry-signal-in-the-other combination sounded lopsided to me; I prefer the more balanced and aesthetic inverted phase-type of stereo chorus, like the Boss CE-3 (Boss' best stereo chorus ever, in my humble opinion).

The CH-1 is great if you're looking for a really clean, sparkling chorused sound, like, say, the clean tone of Kirk Hammett or Mark Tremonti or Eric Johnson. This sound is superb for these guys; however, it doesn't fit my style.

Reliability : 10
C'mon...it's a Boss. Heaven forbid, but if nuclear weaponry or any other method of mass destruction ever annihilates Earth, the only things remaining will be cockroaches and Boss pedals.

I can't speak intelligently on this particular subject. I've been an ardent Boss pedal user for more than twenty years, and I've never had reason to contact Boss' customer support.

Overall Rating : 7
I play kind of an eclectic blend of jazz, blues, and rock--kind of a "Bill Frisell-meets SRV-meets Alex Lifeson" style. I have been playing for 26 years, and I love to write and record my own tunes, as well as play live.

Like I previously mentioned, the CH-1 in and of itself isn't a terrible pedal; it just isn't suited to my organic and earthy style.

In buying the CH-1, my intention was to have a back-up for my 18-year-old Boss CE-3 Chorus. However, after quickly realizing that these two chorus pedals are completely different beasts, I returned the CH-1 and found another CE-3 as a back-up. (Not that a Boss pedal really ever needs a back-up; it's just that Boss no longer makes the CE-3, and I feel better if I have a back-up for a discontinued pedal that's an integral part of my sound.)

Im using a Mexican Strat, a Boss MT2 Metal Zone and a Hughes & Ketna 40w combo. I love the clean sound of Stats anyway, and with the Chorus pedal and some reverb it sounds brilliant. When i bought it, I said to the bloke in the shop that i wanted a pedal to get a clean Metallica sound. Straight away, he went and got this pedal, plugged it in and played the intro to Welcome Home (Sanitarium). I decided to buy it there and then.

the pedal is good for making a subtle difference to the sound. I personally dont like the sound it creates with all the controls on full. I dont suppose it is designed to be used in that way, but at least it offers the range of sounds. I can also get some interesting sounds when i use it with the Boss Metal Zone, both when i put it before and after the the Metal Zone in the chain.

Ofcourse, like with any pedal, you get humming when using a mains adapter, so if you want it to sounds its best then use a battery.

If, like me, you want to get a 'clean Metallica sound', then this is the pedal to buy.

Just as ith any pedal , its as noisy as your guitar to amp sound w/o effects. Andmy NS2 cancels any small hum my set up has (notable on the dirty setting , but not noticeable). They sound great to me , but to each their own .I recommend it over even the Univibe and Stereo Univibe , based on sound , price , customer service , and versitility. I can get my favorite artists sound (Dave Navarro) because thats what he uses, andi dialed in his setting , plain and simple. I say create your own sound with it (i do this in other bands) , so your favorite artists sound may not be important if you dot like the pedal period on YOUR set up. though the knobs are self-explanatory, i believe that the large number of negative replies to this pedal are due to people not understanding what's really going on with this pedal. this pedal kills batteries quickly. the people who have a hard time getting a good sound out of it probably ran the battery down first. at least, that's what i think the negative reviews come from. but the battery-eating thing still hurts your rig, 'cause it won't bypass when the battery is dead, so either get a splitter (too much work) or make sure the battery is fresh and put it in your effects loop (worked for me)

Sound Quality : 9
my setup: sg w/p90As --> vox wah --> boss ds1 (boost/overdrive) --> proco rat (set to saturate with distortion) --> mesa/boogie preamp -- (effects loop) --> boss ch-1 --> ibanez tonelock delay --> preamp again --> peavy classic 50/50 power amp --> 2 cab loaded with vintage 30s.

this pedal is actually pretty lush and deep, if it has a good battery in it (see above). it almost sounds like a flanger pedal.

it won't break. it's made of die-cast metal.

i can trust it won't start screwing up in the middle of a gig, provided that it has a fresh battery and stays in my effects loop where it won't really screw alot up if it runs out (never went out on me in a set when i replaced the battery before hand, but it did once when i replaced it just the night before)

This is a solid pedal, I think better than some give it credit for. The only better chorus unit I've heard is the Arion Stereo Chorus, which is likely the best chorus pedal ever made. I've owned two of those, but I kept breaking and replacing pots on them from wear-and-tear. So I went with the CH1, because I knew that they were a good unit and it seems like every other guitar player has a baby-blue BOSS Chorus pedal! :)

I HATE BOSS PEDALS!!!! .only some are good like the digital delays(even though its not analog its sweet!) its strange how guitar center has all the Boss and DOD pedal up all over the place for you to try , They suck and sound crummy, guitar center just wants you too buy them because they are alot of money, thats why you gotta be the better man and surf the web for effects so you can shape your sound. ANYWAYS , the boss super chorus sounds fake and cheap , it also runs down the tone of the guitar. its not lush sounding like a small clone but that even sounds to Kurt Kobainish(Nirvana is overrated) the best chorus to get is the boss CH-2 witch is hard to find ( can you say ebay!!!)well anyhoo this pedal is just another boss pedal with cheap sound, sounded almost like a crappy flanger. it gets a 4 because the name "SUPER CHORUS" made me laugh , it should be more like "SUPER SUCKER" it just chokes your tone. Try a small stone , or hunt for the ch2

Maybe it's my particular pedal, but this thing has absolutely no depth at all. Unless the depth is cranked all the way up and the rate set fairly high I cannot even tell that it's on. It's a weak, digital tone-sucking piece crap. Thank God I just bought a CE-2 on Ebay.

I used a lot of different guitars on this unit, mostly Fender. The Chorus is hardly visible especially when you are on a gig. The sound is really weak and when you release a lot of Chorus, it kicks in so strong that you just wanna turn it off. I have used other pedals from BOSS, and I think this is one of the worst ones they have produced.

I play a lot of indie and alternative rock music. I wanted to essentuate on the sound by enlarging it's range, but this unit failed me. I had used ZOOM's multi effect and it had better chorus. I'm selling this unit to buy UNIVIBE which I think would do a better job in enlarging my tone.

Ease of use - ridiculously easy. Just turn the knobs till it sounds right.

Sound Quality : 8
I play a Fender MIM Strat with Fralin Vintage Hots (awesome pickups!) and also use a Boss CS-3 compressor and Boss OD-2R Overdrive. I use Peavey amps, either a Classic 50/410 or a 1995 Transtube Studio Pro.

I tried this pedal once using a 9-volt adapter and got a lot of noise with it. So I use batteries (good ones - Duracell or Energizer) and it sounds fine. I always keep fresh batteries nearby, but find that I can generally go about a month between battery changes. I play live about 3 hours a week, so I don't think this thing really gobbles batteries all that much. Once I did need a new battery and didn't have one, and borrowed a rechargable one from the sound tech (playing in church). It sounded just fine.

I like the basic chorus tone I get with this little pedal. When I use the Fralin bridge pickup (with baseplate - very Tele-ish) and hit this chorus, the sound is heaven. I actually use this pickup for a few songs...very clear and bright sounding, the chorus adds a fullness and sweetness that make this a very useable tone for ballads.

It also sounds good using either the amp's overdrive or the afore-mentioned OD-2R. I really like the "level" control. I sometimes back it way off for a very subtle effect, like painting with "pastels." I normally set the rate control at about 9 or 10 o'clock, set the depth to about 2 or 3 o'clock. Level control generally about 50%, tone control straight up. Sometimes I add a bit of extra highs with the tone control, but don't really need to with my particular setup.

This little box sounds fine. I know there are more expensive chorus units out there, but for $25 (I bought it used 9 years ago) this is a very solid unit. I really, really like the sweet sounds it offers. I'll give it a 8 because there may be better sounding units around. I'm satisfied and am not currently looking for anything else. A point off for the noise when used with a power supply.

Reliability : 10
Can I depend on it? I do depend on it and have used it for the past 9 years. The little rubber grommet for the adjustment screw wore out; I just turned it over till the other side wore out. Then I took the one from my compressor pedal and put it in.

Seems the switch sometimes "sticks" and the unit either won't turn on or won't turn off on the first stomp. After I change batteries, I find I have to place the pedal on the floor and fiddle with the screw to find the "sweet spot" where the unit operates with a stomp. The little switch mechanism seems like it might be a bit worn. If it goes, I'll just buy another pedal. But nearly 10 years of pretty consistent use without a backup. It's a Boss pedal. Instead of bombs, we should drop these things on the Taliban. Solid 10 here.

Customer Support : No Opinion
N/A. Bought it used from a former co-worker.

Overall Rating : 10
I play contemporary Christian (many styles), blues, country rock and classic rock. This pedal is a must have for these styles (except for blues). It's a big part of my tone these days. I use it a lot on slower stuff, and even on a couple up tempo rockers.

Gosh, I've been playing over 25 years now. I own the Boss compressor and Turbo Overdrive. Any stomp boxes I buy, I look for Boss first because they are built to last.

If stolen or lost, I'd definitely replace it, though I might try to discover the difference between this and the Chorus Ensemble and pick the one I liked the best. So basically, I'd buy another Boss chorus.

I love its simplicity and durability, and the fact it doesn't really seem to gobble batteries. Nothing to hate about it. This thing definitely helps me make music when playing live. I haven't used it for recording (I have a Boss BR-8 for recording, which has built in effects).

I like Boss pedals the best because of the easy battery change. I've had other pedals and regretted them when it was time to change batteries. "No, I don't have a coin in my pocket...I'm a musician." Or..."where's that little screwdriver I saw in the gig bag last month?"

I'm going to add a few more Boss pedals. The LS-2 loop selector, the acoustic simulator, DD-5 delay and perhaps the DS-1 distortion. I recently sold a Boss Flanger, but now wish I still had it. It's too much most of the, but I could use it more now that I'm playing out more. This little pedal is great. A must have in my tonal quest.

I love this pedal! Having said that, I have heard better, but this chorus pedal sounds pretty good to me. I play an American Standard Strat through a Performer 1000. I set the effect level at 50% and I find that it works best this way. I would have given this pedal a "10" until I heard vinage Memory Man (I think) which is my idea of the ultimat chorus sound. For modern chorus tones, though, the CH-1 is the way to go. A friend of mine had one years ago and he let me borrow it, if I wasn't such a nice guy he would not have gotten it back. I went out and bought my own the day after I returned his.

I play contemporary praise & worship music which encompasses some jazz, r&b, funk, rock and blues. This is one pedal that I will never get rid of, it adds a nice shimmer to funk grooves and slow ballads. It even sounds good with some overdrive. I also use it with a DD-3 delay and it just sounds heavenly. I have had this CH-1 for about 9 years and I have never looked at another pedal with the exception of the Memory Man. I also have a boss ME-5, and it's chourus is no match for the CH-1.

Very straight forward layout. Easy to adjust and use but difficult to find a good tone. My 10 rating refers to layout and use of the controls.

Sound Quality : 4
It isn't all bad but it's more bad than good. I agree that it is almost more of a phase pedal than a chorus pedal. Perhaps that's a strength but if I wanted a phase pedal, I would have purchased one. I want my chorus pedal to sound like a chorus pedal.

The chorus effect is not lush or deep. It can add some nice dimension to a clean channel. It also will make the lead channel edgier for solos although I dislike it immensely for rhythm work on the lead channel.

Over all it makes my tone coarse in all settings. Dialing out the coarseness dials out the chorus effect at the same time. I put it in the loop of my Peavey Classic 100 which is a warm sounding amp. The CH-1 makes the fundamental tone of the amp sterile and harsh.

It is not without it's uses but for the 7 years I've owned this pedal, I've not found its sweet spot. Every time I play through it, the tone just isn't quit right.

Reliability : 10
I got it used and it's still working perfectly. Like them or not, Boss pedals are tough.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 4
This pedal has been in my chain for 7 years now and I do get some use out of it. Since I only paid $35 for it, I don't resent the purchase but over all, it's not what I want in a chorus pedal. Perhaps my tastes would only be satisfied by a rack unit or a much more expensive, vintage stomp box.

For the record I like my Boss DD-3 delay pedal a lot so my review is not a bias against Boss. For basic pedals, I think Boss is the best. I also think they missed the boat on this "Super Chorus". A better name would be "Super Coarse".

I honestly don't know why they've had so much success with this pedal. More power to them but I would not buy it again. My rating of 4 reflects the fact that I can use it once in a while with good results. IMHO a 1 would reflect no useability in any situation.

A boss pedal is easy to use. There are 4 knobs - effect, hi-lo, rate and depth. Very conventional for a chorus.
The manual is not very helpful to a player and players should trust their own ears to find a right tone.

Sound Quality : 8
I am mostly using Gibson ES335, a Fender Strat Relic and a Fender Blues Jr. For the Gibson, CH-1 fattens up the tone a bit. For me who needs a jazzy tone, this piece is a good assessory. The chorus effect is more pronounced for the Strat ( single coil pickup)and like two strats playing at slightly different time.
Effect knob - you have to turn it more in order to feel the chorus.
Varying the Rate and Depth knobs get you some flanging like tones.
The very good point for having this is CH-1 will not overwhelm other effects like distortion. You can maintain your distorted tone very well even with the chorus on at the same time. I hate some chorus sounding with distortion on.

Reliability : No Opinion
Yes, I think so. I use it mostyly at home. Reliability is not very important issue to me.

I play jazz, rock and fusion. JOhn Scofield's stuff.
I think when it is difficult to find the old Ibanez Chorus that Scofield is using, CH-1 is a good clone. It won't color your guitar tone - that's why I am preferring it over CE5 or other chorus pedals.
If stolen, I would surely buy it again unless I find the old Ibanez Chorus pedal. Honestly speaking, there are quite a few types of Chorus sounds, I compare this with CE5 side by side, CE5 is another type of sound but adds colour too much.

Excellent, and I'm fussy. I use a Tele through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and very few effects ,if any. I rely mostly on my fingers and the natural tone of the instrument. I prefer effects to be subtle. It's the same as make up on a woman. I think it's preferable to subtly accentuate what you have rather than to paint on what you haven't.(Unless you're going for the punk effect, which is fine). I like to put on the chorus and sound better without anyone realising I'm using it. The CH-1 does that perfectly. Highly recommended.

Easy to use. I couldn't work out the EQ knob in the short time I had it, it didn't do anything at all. I didn't get a manual but I was using it in seconds. Very Easy.

Sound Quality : 8
This was a complete impulse buy. I tried it in the shop and played "waterfall" (Stone Roses) and it sounded so beautiful and I bought it straight away. I usually play noise rock in a Sonic Youth/My Bloody Valentine vein and previously thought I had no need for a chorus. I was right! I could not find a use for this thing besides playing Waterfall in my room! I was even slightly embarrased by owning a chorus pedal in a slightly sad punk rock way...My Pedals are used for making a huge noise. I use Lonax analog delay, Boss superoverdrive, MXR blue box, Proco RAT, DOD Flanger, DOD gonkulator, DOD grunge, EH Frequency analyser, Boss DD3.
Back to the pedal. It has a nice watery sound, the EQ knob didn't seem to do anything. It has very little range - some chorus pedals can make flanging or phasing sounds thus eliminating the need for these pedals, but you can forget it with this pedal. You Can't get any strange warbling noises you can get on some other chorus pedals (Ibanez, Small Clone). I much prefer the chorus sounds you get with flangers anyway, that has much more personality.

Reliability : 9
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

This is such a typical Boss pedal it's not true. Yeah it's dependable, and sounds OK and it's easy to use and expensive. It also has no versitility at all, does exactly and only what it says on the tin and is quite frankly DULL DULL DULL. I like my effects to either be amazingly good (Rat, Big Muff) or amazingly bad to make loads of noise (DOD, MXR blue box) to stick in the mind. Not ever fair to middling. There is nothing worse than Boss's bland effects range in my opinion. I only like a few Boss pedals when I need a basic striaght sound.
This pedal is fine if you want a chorus pedal, I've tried a few including the small clone and this is probably the best. But I don't like chorus pedals. I don't know why I bought it, and I sold it a month later. Ho Hum. Get a decent Flanger, then you can get Chorus and whooshing sounds. But remember I hate chorus pedals.

THIS IS TO NOTE!!!! i use this on my bass, and it kicks ass.. i have the effect level cranked, and the EQ usually at 3 o clock, the depth all the way up and the rate all the way down, and put distortion before it, and it sounds liek a flanger on a "classic" setting but without as much depth... its awesome for bass, especially when playing chords, it gives it so much more "phattness" and warmth, and metallicy sounds too..... crank the rate up and you get this cool, trippy sound

i use an Ibanez RG 470 which is one of my favorite guitars, I then plug that through a boss compressor in to a jim dunlop crybaby wah pedal which goes in to a boss metal zone which then goes in to a boss Ds1 then i plug in to the chorus and all goes through a boss Eq and in to my h-h amp(which is a shit amp)i never use all pedals at once all at seperate times for diferent things.i am a big fan of people like joe satriani and steve vai and the whole shreding scene.along with my metal zone and Eq the chorus soungs great it produces the rythym sound of the joe satriani song cool #9 which is what i am looking for.i dont really like it too much for lead at i think that it cuts your guitar signal for harmonic dive bombs and it breaks up the smooth sound.for clean tone it sounds great for early chilli peppers stuff like "soul to squeeze" with a compressor the chorus sounds great i am so far happy with it but i get a background buzzing if i use an adaptor which i need to use as it eats the battery up in about 2 hours.

Reliability : 7
as all boss pedals it is really strong an elephant could stand on it and it would still be ok. i wouldnt use it for recording unless i had a battery because of the buzzing but it has never failed me yet and i use it for gigs all the time.

I use this with an Fender American Series Strat with the stock pickup in the neck, a seymour duncan hot rails in the middle and seymour duncan vintage rails in the bridge position. I have a marshall vs102r 2x12 combo. I thread this through the effects loop right before a boss DD-5 digital delay, a dunlop crybaby 535Q wah pedal, a boss CS-3 compressor/sustainer , a boss BF-2 flanger, and finally a Boss GT-3 multi effects. I also run a boss GE-7 eq pedal direct from the input. (I LOVE BOSS PEDALS!!!) The sound of this pedal is great. It is well priced and gives an incredibly smooth cool chorus sound. I also tested the CE-5 chorus ednsemble which is a little more money and suppose to get more tonal variety, but i couldn't get the chorus sound that i wanted from that and the CH-1 was the better choice for me. THe sound quality is great it has no extra noise at all, it can be heard crystal clear with any setting even with distortion turned all the way up. It really does well to fatten up your guitar tone.

Reliability : 10
It's a Boss you don't have to say anymore than that. I don't carry a spare b/c im sure i don't need to. I gig with it constanly and hasn't failed me yet. It has held up well sounding the same as it did when i first got it.

this thing gives you the perfect sound!! i can get the sound that Metallica use on 'Nothing else matters', 'Enter sandman' and also 'Come as you are' by Nirvana. It's dead on...this thing is wicked! i've tryed it on many guitars and it sounds good on all of 'em.

I'd say this is very reliable

This thing sounds best when played clean, i don't think it sounds very good with distortion. I have to say that it makes playing on clean sound alot nicer but it's not essential to what i play cuz i play punk rock, but it's good fun for messing around with. Overall i'd say it's well worth it!! check it out

it has 4 knobs - level, eq, rate, depth and very easy to use. it's not hard at all. if you don't have a manual, then just mess around with last two knobs.

for me, it's a essential part of my ste-up. I am using Cort Classic Les Paul copy which is a piece of crap with pickups from Ibanez Js-100 model, Axis humbucker with coil tap. Effects are connected to Sans amp XXL to Ch-1 to Pearl Ad-3 analog delay to the amp either Peavey Envoy 110 or Marshall vs65r or vs265r with onboard chorus off.
With XXL's dynamic response and Ch-1's tone expanding, i can make my guitar all alive and scream. it gives incredibly distinctive tone that i can't even get from any other guitar. I know a lot of people complain about how much ch-1 sounds so generic and digital. but. i say it had it own sound like any other effect you know. i usually set my ch-1 level 11 o'clock, eq 2 o'clock, rate between 10 to 11 o'clock and depth between 2 and 3 o'clock. I personally could not tell what does eq and level does, though. Any way, this effect cuts your highs little bit. so, if your bridge pick is treby then this can help that problem. hmm.. sort of warm sounding although it's digital.

very dependable and useful thing. i play classic rock and blues mostly and little bit of jazz.. (yeah.. i'm trying..) i have been playing for about little more than 3 yrs, but i giged more that 100 times. try it before you buy it. it sounds good to your ears? well, get it. and get an eq along with it if you can.

pretty easy to get a decent sound. there are four knobs: e. level that determines volume level of the chorus effect, eq boosts either highs or lows, rate for how fast you want the effect to happen, and depth for how thick you want the chorus effect. manual is small but covers all the major areas that you need to know.

Sound Quality : 7
I just started out playing on an electric. My setup is an Epiphone FAT-210 -> CH-1 -> Marshall G15RCD practice amp. getting a decent sound out of it isnt hard. on my neck pickup(single coil) i just had to mess around with the pedal's knobs, although when i switched to my bridge pickup(humbucker), i had to go to my amp to turn down the treble because i was getting way too many highs. you cant turn the rate and depth knobs to far past 2 o'clock without getting a somewhat annoying vibrato sound. so far i'm getting good use out of it.

its sturdy, built like a rock. i wouldnt worry about having a backup, but be sure to bring extra batteries or an ac adapter.

never dealt with them

it's a decent chorus pedal, i can get a good sound out of it. maybe a little high priced for what it's worth, but i can find a purpose for it. if it were stolen, i'd probably look into some different companies, but keep this one in mind. for someone who's just starting out, i'd make this pedal one of my recommendations.

Extremely easy to use. Turn knobs till you get a sound you like.

While the chorus effect is pretty decent, the unit colors your main tone even when clicked off. I tried to compensate with the eq knob but no go. True bypass this thing is NOT! It made my main tone sound like I was running the guitars with the tone knob turned off. I'm running it in the effects loop of a Mesa Nomad. It doesn't suck the tone when in front of the amp but instead, gives you some noise.

Built like a brick shithouse.

Boss products are built to withstand the Atom bomb but this particular unit alters the original tone too much when running in an effects loop and adds noise when running in front.

oh come on, now. all you need to do is move some dials, and step on it. the manual, which isn't very informative (aside from elementary topics, such as proper connection), but that's no big deal.

setup- boogie dual rec thru lots of pedals to one of lots of guitars. if you want a pure, pristine chorus sound, i suggest you check out a tc chorus pedal. this pedal is essentially for either a rookie or someone who doesn't really rely on chorus effects. although it's not the greatest-sounding chorus around, it's definitely doable. and for the price, it's a bargain.

Reliability : 10
i found out the hard way how sturdy this thing is when i dropped it on my foot. damn near broke it, as far as i know.

as i described above, this pedal is perfect for either a rookie player, or someone who doesn't need to blow $300 for a tc chorus pedal. it's simple, sounds decent, is ridiculously easy to use. this should be applicable to guitarists of all genres.
