Not that difficult to get used to. The real kicker is the "Tone" and "Effect Level" knobs. This thing is meant to be put into the effects loop.

I use it with a Godin Detour (discontinued) through a Peavey Classic 30. As stated above, this pedal is meant to be used in the effects loop. Otherwise, it will sound very sterile and sound very poor in general. Be sure to fiddle with the "effect level" and "Tone" knob; it is what makes or breaks your sound.

guitars: custom made strat, yamaha pacifica; pedal chain all BOSS: CS3-DS1-OD3-CH1-DD3; to Roland cube 60. I needed subtle chorus, just to add a bit of spice when playing clean chords and arpeggios, and that's what it is. Anyone here looking for a watery, swirling type chorus, look for something else, this can't deliver it. Not noisy at all. Also good for acoustic guitar.

I've been playing for twelve years, constantly gigging for six years, and the first thing I look for in any piece of equipment is reliability. I also need effects that cover as many genres and musical situations as possible. I don't use chorus that much, so this box suits to me. Again, if you need quality chorus that bad, buy yourself T.C. Electronic (the one that Eric Johnson use), that will do the job. I'm fine with this one.

So much tone sucking... It's awful...
And the EQ knob... when you are using it in clean sound - OK. You can twist it however you want.
But if you use it distorted there is a huge increase in the volume. When in distorted sound you should be careful where you leave the EQ knob so there will be no difference in the volume level when turning on or off the chorus.
Well, there is a Level knob on the CH-1, but when you turn it lower you barely hear the effected sound...

Takes a little tweaking to get a decent sound. Does not have the same depth of effect as many other chorus units.
Sound Quality

I have a hard time assigning a numerical value to the sound quality of this unit. I think it is hideous with electric guitar. The sound is sterile, digital, lacks warmth, and gives an ice pick like chorus sound. Any of the older Boss choruses or the newer digital CE-5 sound warmer.
However... this chorus sounds GREAT with acoustic guitars. Everything that hurts it with electric seems to help on the acoustic. The chorus is precise and emphasizes the mids and highs on an acoustic extremely well. It retains the clarity of your acoustic sound without the slight muddiness that can result with a lot of other choruses. I was ready to dump this thing until I tried it on an acoustic.
I am going to give it my rating for acoutic, for an electric I would have to give it no higher than a 6. I think Keeley would have to have a mod for this for it to even be worthy of consideration for most electric guitar applications.

Boss support sucks, can't even get parts easily from them. But.. at least they finally put most of their newer manuals online so they don't get totally slammed. They also have a decent warranty and they aren't going out of business so they will be around to honor it.

I play and write orignal rock, mostly in the classic rock, old metal genres as well as writing music for acoustic guitar. Love the Grateful Dead, Dylan, CSNY, Allman Brothers, Yes, Queen, Deep Purple, Hendrix, Zeppelin, AC-DC, Sabbath, Al Dimeola, Zappa, Bob Marley, Sonny Landreth, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Sublime, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc.. you get the picture.
Have been playing over 30 years, I am constantly in search of better tone and although I don't have the best ear ever I have a pretty good one.
I have owned and tried a lot of pedals over the years and think that I can speak authoritatively in my review of this one. I will grant however that sound is subjective and different guitar/amp setups may yield different results.
My advice is, try this out if you are looking for a chorus for your acoustic guitar. If you are buying a chorus for your electric; unless you are looking for a really modern, mild chorus that has a very clean digital sound, you should look elsewhere. This is a great chorus for acoustic guitar players only. Love this for acoustic, hate if for electric.

your generally going to get one sound out of this and its exactly what i want an icy cold tone for icy cold songs about messed up stuff there's enough control on it to do exactly that and if you have an ear for it the eq, rate and depth can all be zero's in 2 exacly what you want. so its easy with musicians ears.

ive run this amp through a few different set ups a fender blues Junior, marshall Avt 50, Fender FM 12, Crate 212 and some other goofy amps and i can't say anything bad about it it's a little odd with distortions because im a big fan off high gain and fuzz but thats what i bring out my ce-5 for. i love the chime this adds, it's subtle and at points you wouldnt know it was there 9at least at my settings) it's good for a little extra color its not a warbly effect but ive got it sounding natural at times-im a big analog fan and i still like this. it's great for cure/joy division type jams as well as other things you just have to know what its going to do at what setting

This is a great subtle chorus. It is not as lush and deep as many, but it is not intended to be. The EQ control is very useful when changing instruments and not having to adjust your amp settings to suit the chorus. I like having the level control as well to adjust the amount of wet/dry signal...many other models don't have this feature. Anyone complaining that it isn't lush enough should really do more research...why did you buy it if you want a very lush chorus? I'm giving this a 9 to make up for the uneducated reviews.

This pedal fits my chorus needs perfectly. It isn't the most lush, but that's fine with me. I run it in my effects loop and it's nice and quiet. I like having the dry/wet level control and the high end EQ is great! I can change guitars and effects combinations without having to mess with my amps controls. A note to those complaining about it being weak or subtle...why did you buy it? It isn't a TC or Small Stone...it isn't intended to be. This pedal has no sound quality. It produces cold, tinny, cheap, cheesy, weak digital sound that cannot stand up to good chorus pedals. Reading others posts about this pedal, I am not the only one that has issues with the lack of sound quality of this pedal. The sound quality is bad, even for Boss. Boss dropped the ball on this pedal big time. There is WAY too much de-tune effect to this pedal, and you cannot tweak that out of the signal. Also, there is about a 50% drop in the sound and tone when I engage this pedal. That is completely unacceptable.
This pedal was replaced QUICKLY in my line up by a Electro Harmonix Small Clone Analog Chorus pedal; the sound is like a different world.

Sound Quality

If you're looking for an analog chorus sound, this is not the pedal for you. It's digital, and as a result, is very digital and 'icey' sounding. Great if you like a digital sound, and would probably sound pretty nice on a digital synth. If you're looking for Robert Smith style chorus sounds, this pedal can do it and more. Can even emulate certain Small Clone sounds but obviously isn't necessarily meant to. I've read a lot of reviews stating that this pedal has a weak signal and is noisy... My CH-1 cuts through full gain very easily and doesn't add excessive gain to the signal on a clean low gain feed on any amp I've used it on thus far. Not noisy at all, unless you take into account that touching the strings and etcetera are processed along with the signal. No switch or jack noise though. Perhaps I got a good one out of a batch?
Overall, it isn't the greatest sounding chorus in existence, but for my taste (I tend to like digital chorus sounds), I am happy with it.

This thing, like all BOSS pedals, is built like a freaking tank. Definitely one of the reasons why they're tour staples I can assume. The only weak point would possibly be the knobs, but you'd have to do some pretty hard kicking at it to even break those. I'd definitely use it without a backup, although it eats batteries up, so if you can use an adapter, use one whenever possible.

I play an amalgam of many genres, and usually use this pedal in a situation to where I want whichever range to cut through a mix. It has pretty deep lows, ringing mids and icey highs. I have been playing for 20 years, own a 1978 Peavey T-60 and a 1997 Les Paul Custom. Sounds great on both guitars, but might be a little too jangly for a single coil setup. If it were stolen, I'd definitely be pissed, since I use it quite a bit, and would probably buy it again unless I found a pedal for the same price that I absolutely liked more. I love the color (fits the sound of the pedal), the icey digital sound, the build quality, compactness, and low noise. My favorite feature is the EQ, which brings in more or less of the high and low end respectively. My only major beef is that it eats batteries, even when turned off, if it's still plugged up. I did not compare it in-store to any other pedals, but I have used and owned quite a few chorus pedals in my time, and this one is one of the better ones I've owned and used. I wish it came with an adapter. It definitely helps me create music, since I've bought it most of my songs have at least one part in it that features the CH-1.

Takes a little time to figure out waht the nobs do. I don't know waht depth means but is makes the sound get swirlyer. The manual is no help it's all written in techspeak.
Sound Quality

I use this with a vintage Cort Les Paul or a Hondo Telecaster into a Crate 10watt amp, and play leggato runs on the octavs. When I turn it on it's kind off noisey when all the nobs are up especialy the depth nob which makes the sound a lot swirlyer when I turn it down it sounds better. I want to raise the impedence of it so it matches my pickups more so I might mod it with a resistor on the imput jack, I do it to all my pedals it's a easy and a cheap mod to do that you never hear the big guys talk about because it takes their business away. I like tone I don't play a thousand notes a minute so my tone is important to me.

It's just like the other boss pedals I've used in the past I've used the ds-1, mz-1 and the cs-3. I'd use it without a backup but I'd probably bring another one just in case it doesn't work after the bar.

I've been playing for almost 18 years and this sounds like what I need except the depth nob makes it to swirly when it's up to high. If it were lost I'd probably spend a lot of time looking for it and then by something else like a dirt bike or something else. I wish it had some way to control the speed of the pulsing because when I play on the octavs it sounds kind of dirty like it is to slow. I mainly play Robotcore music like the band Eephus or Pore so this gives me a good tone for my guitars but it gets to swirly with the depth nob so I gues it gets a point or two taken away for that.

The CH-1 is a 4-knob Boss and largely intuitive to use. I bought my CH-1 secondhand so no manual but its lack was no drawback. Controls are clearly labelled and straightforward in their functions.
I had long resisted chorus type effects but getting into a playing situation where material almost demands such effects meant that I had to bite the bullet.
A combination of logical controls and experimentation soon revealed some usable chorus settings. I don't like extreme modulation effects so by choice I have limited myself to what the CH-1 can produce. Used in harness with a DD-3 and some really great 'spacey' sounds are there.
Sound Quality
:

Sound quality is fine. No appreciable noise and no perceived decrease in signal level when engaged. It adds a bit of chime and zing when needed, but is not a crucial pedal in my set-up like a wah or my Rat 2. Not so much meat-and-potatoes but more a dash of seasoning....
Sits on my pedalboard which is mains powered so no danger of battery death mid-gig. Pedalboard runs into either a Hiwatt DR103 [through 2x12 or 4x12 cabs], Lab Series L7 or Marshall MG30.
Pedalboard comprises:- Boss TU-2 >> Monte Allums CS-3 >> Blubber wah >> Monte Allums BD-H2O >> Monte Allums SD-808 >> Rat 2 >> Boss CH-1 >> Boss DD-3 >> Boss RV-5.
The overdrives/distortion form the basis for my sounds. Everything after the Rat is a bit of gloss on the fundamental sound. In that respect the CH-1 satisfactorily does its part.

As I wrote earlier, the CH-1 is an addendum to my sound and its loss would not cause a problem. It is useful to have that chimey gloss, but I would rank its necessity below reverb and delay [in order of importance]. Forgive the analogy - if the Rat is black/white, the CH-1 is pastel pink.

This pedal blows in this area. I've had this CH-1 for over a year now and have NEVER been able to get good sound or tone out of it. I read many of the reviews below and noticed many users have the same experience.
Even when I use this pedal alone, it drops the volume of my amp down by almost 50%. It does the same thing in my pedal board, no matter where I locate it. This is a BIG problem when you are playing out because you have to turn your amp volume WAY UP,turn the volume knobs WAY DOWN on your guitar - and that plays havoc with you sound and tone. I play a 1971 Les Paul Custom thru a Fender Bandmaster and cannot get any good sound from this pedal. The volume drop is unnacceptable for a pedal this pricey.
This pedal also ruins the tone. I have been unable to get any good sound or tone out of this pedal for over a year.
The bottom line is THIS PEDAL IS WORTHLESS.

i would say this pedal is not that easy at first to get it sound just by tweaking straight out of the box, so i refer the manual and test drive all the knob to hear what it do (this is my 3rd pedal from the Boss series), editing patches would be a bit frustating until u get use t it, and the manual are decent. It did help to refer but it sure take some time to tweak it.

For guitar right now, im using this with an Ibanez RG350 and a modified JEM jr, Fender and Squier Stratocaster, a Peavey Wolfgang and a Dillion Les Paul copy. For amplifier, live i just go thru any amp the gig provided, at home i use a Marshall MG15DFX combo.
It doesnt get noisy at all even at the most extreme setting, except if u use it with a distortion pedals with full distortion or high overdrive on the amplifiers. The effects could be weak and great, it depends on ur setting and how u set the other pedals, u need to compromise unless u are into wicked, nasty (but great) sound \nn/ hehehe.
I can get close to certain sound that i want, i dont really try to emulate a lot of other guitarist with the chorus, but mostly either it a subtle, very obvious or something in between. But one my friends do said they heard one of my setting sound like the early 80's sound.

This is a great pedal either by itself or with other pedals combination, and i either use it on my crunch sounds or clean sounds. I dont really prefer to use a chorus pedal on my lead unless im playing a cover song but usually they use it very very subtle that sometimes u can just ignore and people wont notice :p hehehehe, and i have been playing for 9 to 10 years already and start more serious in the last 7 years. And the other pedals that i use are a Vox Wah, Boss BF-3, CS-3,DS-1 (x2), DD-20 (x3), FV-50H/L, GE-7 (x5), LS-2 (x4),MT-2 (recently bought this back), NS-2, RV-5 and SD-1 (x2).Previously i owned a Boss DD-3's and some from Digitech and Ibanez pedals.
If this pedals were stolen, i just bought it back if i had the cash at that time. My favourite feature on the clean sound is when i set the effect level, tone control and the depth around 3 to 6 o'clock and the rate around 6 to 12 o'clock. For a subtle effect i just set the effect level at 12 o;clock, the tone around 9 to 12 o'clock, the rate around 6 to 12 o'clcok and the depth around 12 to 3 o'clock. Im still trying to find the best setting for my crunch.
My setup right now, the guitars--FV-50H--Vox wah--LS-2 (x2) [the first box, dictated either im going dirty or clean, meanwhile the second one dictated either im going crunch or lead:-
1) clean- CS-3 + GE-7 + CH-1
2) crunch- GE-7 + DS-1 + GE-7 + BF-3 + CH-1
3)lead- GE-7 +SD-1 (x2)
4) from the 1st LS-2 i'm using the A output to a NS-2 and put the
and LS-2 in the loop of the NS-2 and the NS-2 output back to
the 1st LS-2.
--#rd and the 4th LS-2 (which consist of 2 x DD-20 in the A loop and one DD-20 in the B loop with a Boss RV-5, meanwhile the 3rd LS-2 use to cut off the effects from the 4th LS-2.

I'd say to find a good sound out of this pedal is pretty easy, sometimes if you haven't used it for a while it does take some practice but after about 10 minutes you can dial it in pretty close. Pretty easy design to click on as are most boss pedals just press and go.

I'm using my les paul with this through a palomino 30 watt 2x12 amp and it sounds beautiful and adds a nice texture. Sometimes it does sound overly chorusy but then you just dial down the effect level and play on.

The actual chorus effect itself - the way it modifies the tone is quite nice, but the overall output sounds rather thin and wispy compared to the clean guitar tone. This makes single coil strat pickups sound tinny and a humbucker Les Paul sound like P90's. Ok for an entry level player, but there are better true bypass pedals out there.

Ok so far, not had a problem with it. However I'd ALWAYS get a backup because two of my other boss pedals have flaky behavior, one with the power supply and the other with the switching - makes a loud noise when disengaged.

Those wishing to emulate a similar sound to the glory days of Joe Satriani (e.g. the 'Surfing with the Alien' era) need look no further, this is the pedal for you! The minute I plugged this pedal in at the guitar shop I could instantly dial in the perfect 'Z.Zs Song' tone. this pedal handles both clean and distortion well, and whilst tone-snobs may turn up their nose at this cheap chorus alternative, this pedal is perfectly capable of producing a professional sounding chorus for practical circumstances.
Though there are 'lusher' pedals out there (T.C Electronics chorus & Boss CE-2 spring to mind), the bell-like chimes of this pleasant chorus pedal will certainly not disappoint. For the price this is simply unbeatable! Try and see if you can get a 90s MIJ version second hand.

Sure there are better boutique chorus pedals out there, but alot of professionals and some of the best guitarists in the world actually still prefer the good old sound of a Boss chorus pedal! A great alternative to the astronomically expensive CE-2.

Sound quality is excellent for what I play. I don't want a huge swirly chorus sound, I want my otherwise dry Les Paul to sound a little lush. The CH-1 is perfect for that. It doesn't overdo the chorus effect. I play with all settings around 12 o'clock. Sounds perfect on stage and at home.

Ok, I've had Small Clones and everything. I would not say this is the best chorus of all time but it suits perfectly to me.
I must make something clear for all tha young amateurs and begginers out there, who know nothing yeat about stompboxes:
This pedal was launched in 1989 as an analog pedal, and until October 2001 it was. In that month, the CH-1 Schematic suffered a big change and from that date on, the CH-1's are digital as they changed some analog components for digital (cheaper) ones.
So this is the story. Mine is a early 90's and sounds pretty good to me and to the music im into right now.
If your CH-1 is October 2001 or older, Im sorry for you men, you have the wrong guy.

There are many types of music and many types of chorus pedals, before choosing any of them, first try to find out which sound you want and go to the store and let the sales guy show you the material hes got.
When I was young I bought a Small Clone just because this guy Cobain used it before he patheticaly shot himself. And the real story is that I was not after his sound, so my ears got mature and when I found out I wanted something else, I sold it to another iwannabecobain kid.
So my advice is: Be your selves and try to sound like your selves!
P.S: Kurt Cobain shot himself, he is not a model to any of you kids. Im ashamed he used strats and DS-1 as I do.

This may not get the deep, swirling, watery chorus you may get out of the CE-2. I tend to find the CH-1 is for achieving effects mixed with others. This pedal sounds fantastic with distortion and overdrive, achieved the sounds captured by artists such as Omar Rodriguez Lopez and Dean Deleo from the Stone temple Pilots. For a general chorus pedal this wouldnt be as high as an 8, but for the distinctive sound this pedal captures it is a very high mark.
The only problem is, is that unless the E.LEVEL is turned above halfway the effect is barely hearable.

I play grunge, progressive and post hardcore music, and this pedal is great for all. Mixed with lots of different effects is this pedal's biggest strength, and doesn't drown out or get drownwed by other sounds. I play a les paul with an overdrive and distortion OS-2. If i was to lose this pedal, I would definitly purchase this same pedal. My favourite feature on this pedal is the EQ; turned all the way up it sounds like no other chorus available.
Go ahead and buy one, you'll be disappointed at first, but get to know it and you'll love it.

First -- this will not make you sound like Kurt Cobain. It's not a deep, sweeping chorus. Second -- it's meant for live performance or high-volume practice. It sounds weak and almost indescernable at low volumes. However at live volumes it really comes through and colors your tone just right. This is one of two chorus pedals I own -- the other is the MXR M-134 stereo chorus. The MXR is overpowering, and I use it for times when I want my tone to sound like it's immersed in chorus, just dripping effect.

This pedal is good at fattening up your tone with a nice volume boost. I like it just for that, and I feel that this is what Roland/Boss was shooting for when they designed it. Very few pro players want a chorus that dominates the tone. It takes away from solid, aunthentic tube tone, and sounds synthetic. If you want to sound like Kurt Cobain or Zakk Wylde, use what they used (Electroharmonix Small Stone for KC, and MXR stereo chorus for Zakk Wylde). In any case, ALWAYS try the unit out before you buy. If you don't, it's your fault if you don't like the effect.

Satriani has used this in his rig for at least 10 years, although his is probably analogue. Still, this ounds great, even though it's digital. I spent a long time comparing this the the Chorus Ensemble, the CE-5, and found the CH-1 to be far warmer and less sterile. A great buy, especially at this price!

I bought this pedal really cheap off a guy who was selling all his stuff, and giving up music. At first, I just stuck it on the pedalboard, turned all the knobs to the middle, decided that sounded OK, and left it. After a while, I started getting annoyed by the drop in level and seemingly "thin" quality of the tone. I contemplated buying another chorus pedal, but I decided to sit down and mess with this one. I turned the level up more, and messed with the depth, and messed with the placement in my pedal setup. After a while, I found the sounds I was looking for, and now I'm really impressed by this pedal.

It's not analog, it's digital. Don't expect it to sound analog. However, with that said, it doesn't sound bad. Pretty shimmery. Can sound very full if you have the right amp and settings. The guitar you play is obviously important too. Playing a guitar with humbuckers through this made a huge difference. I'm into King Crimson and The Police as far as chorus sounds reference, and this will do those sounds easily. It doesn't get as freaky as some other choruses, but for the price Boss charges for these things, it's pretty versatile in my opinion.
I dunno much about the "correct" way to run pedals in a configuration, but I have this set as such: Line 6 DL4 > Boss PH3 Phase Shifter > Danelectro Daddy-O overdrive > Boss DD2 delay > Boss CH1 Super Chorus > Line 6 Verbzilla reverb > Akai Headrush E2 > Boss TU2 tuner. It works pretty damn well in that setup. It's perfect for enhancing the sound of modulation effects.

The first is the "arpeggios" setting, it sounds great for jazz and shimmer, kinda of analogish to me with a little swirl. The next is the vibrato setting, little weak but really cool sound. I used it with a Fender American Standard Strat w/after market (Seymour Duncan) pickups into a Marshall amp. Sounds warm and subtle, sort of "delicate" to me. I liked it a lot. Even with the dials maxed out it has usable sound (although not for my playing style). The EQ knob really does make a difference (which I had doubted before trying it). I think it sounds really good--not metallic sounding to me, which is one thing that I HATE in any effect except distortion (where it belongs).

Boooooo!
Everyone says they're built like tanks. Well, maybe the outside is. I bought mine used (my bad) and the A Output wasn't working after I got it home. Had it evaluated by a professional electronics tech. He said it's probably a factory defect. At his shop, we called Roland/Boss. They verified it sounded like it was not working properly--since it was in Like New condition (but still used) they wouldn't even give me any help or suggestions. I took it home, I opened it up and fixed it myself. It worked fine for another week...then neither output works. The jacks are mounted to PCM boards an held to the case via washers and nuts. The boards inside the unit are NOT secured to anything but are free-floating. Anyway it probably shouldn't have had this problem.

Pffftttt! whatever!
I bought a used pistol once that turned out to have a flaw. I sent it back to the manufacturer (Beretta) they sent me a NEW one no problem.
Boss?! No way. Unless you bought it new, from an authorized dealer, and have the original receipt...you're outta luck. No flexibility on their part--they don't even want to hear it. They rest on the reputation of their pedals and not on the reputation of the company's customer service.
If you buy one of these (or any Boss pedal!), you'd better hope it never breaks. 5 year warranty IF you buy NEW from an authorized dealer only (better check your guitar store's status!) and you'd better keep that receipt. No if/and/or buts.

The design is decent and the sound is really good. I can't really fault the pedal--just the company for lack of customer service/care. The pedal has a pretty good sound to it--but it won't really give you any "weird" effect. You might try the Boss CE-5 for that or another effect altogether (like a flange). The CH-1 has more of an old skool vibe, as opposed to a digital/metal vibe. The box is solid and the dials are pretty solid too. The insides are NOT secured to anything and are fragile PCM boards.
The companies customer service is worthless! Bottom line on that: They won't back up their product. The will only fulfill their legal obligation...period.
If I can find the replacement parts (maybe guts from another CH-1), I'm willing to repair it. The pedal DOES sound good.
--but--
If it breaks would I replace it? Funny...
It DID! And I'm replacing it with something else...probably a Danelectro Cool Cat (a NEW one!).

Well if you want a lush, deep, good chorus sound this is not the unit for you - don't even bother. Impossible to get a saturated chorus sound - no usable tones here - you can barely even hear an effect in mono. I wanted something like my DOD FX 65 stereo chorus which i got in 1995 - but this was sooooo disappointing. For the $100 i paid i felt totally ripped off - for the sound it produces, it should cost $25 out the door with the ac adaptor included - for $99 it is a piece of crap - not worthy of its price tag. I returned it after about 2 or 3 days and exchanged it for an Ibanez TS9 for the same price - now there is an effect unit worthy of a $99 price tag. My opinion is that for $99 an effect unit should completely satisfy your wants/needs and it should leave you not even wanting another effect unit - it shouldn't make you regret buying it after a day or two of casual jamming. Piece of crap! I have a better chorus effect in my Digitech Desktop Guitar Processor which i bought for $99. This box is awful enough sounding to scare me away from ever buying or even testing/using/borrowing-for-just-one-show any other Roland/Boss pedal. How hard is it to get down a chorus effect? Take one signal, then split into two, then adjust the amount of signal number two, and the delay time and rate of signal number two. Whatever this pedal does, it doesn't turn the two signals into lush stereo magic, so what did i pay $99 for if not lush stereo magic? Nothing.

I am using a '73 Fender Bassman 100 tube amp head which sounds good at any setting - also noiseless - playing through celestion speakers in a marshall cab - all good gear - clear and noiseles - guitar is mahogany (e.g. gibson explorer/thunderbird). Both guitar and amp are near-flawless and in perfect states of repair. By all means, my rig will allow the best to come out in a pedal. If it doesnt' sound good in this amp it won't sound good anywhere - well, it just doesn't get the job done even with a good tube amp. Its a chorus for amatuer musicians only - even if you are a pro and are on a budget and you really need a chorus you wouldn't want anyone to hear you using this thing - this is a toy chorus to be toyed around with, no serious musician would use this in front of an audience or for recording. If i had a gig on the beach in the sand then i would use it because i wouldn't care if it got sand in it and got ruined. I wanted that big lush chorus sound like Kurt Cobain on Nevermind - the dreamy watery like shimmering wall of glass chorus - this is just some el-cheapo mimmicking box. And the guy who said he can get the Bryan Adams tone is an amatuer too if he thinks this thing sounds even half-way decent or close to the 'run to you' tone. Bryan Adams' tone on 'Run To You' is not attainable with this unit - Bryan Adams' has a much richer, more-proper, lush, penetrating, and obviously higher-quality chorus tone on that song that Roland only wishes this unit could mimmick. Don't be fooled, these guys are just stoked on a new unit, they would probably rave about anything after 5 minutes out of the box. This is a very low-quality chorus - if you are serious about your chorus tone save your money and buy something like a TC-Chorus or an Electro-Harmonix Poly Chorus.

After this piece of crap, i will never use another Roland/Boss effect unit (or any gear) again. Boss sucks, Roland sucks. The lesson? Always go boutique, if you can't afford to go boutique, just save your money until you can afford to go boutique. You will be happier to use no pedals for another month rather than affording this 'compromise' now. Go boutique, mass produced pedals are always crap.

I traded this for a EHX Big Muff... Best deal I ever made, as I HATED that crappy big muff (I wonder why it's so popular?!?).
What I love about the SuperChorus, is that it can be very subtle if I want it too. It enhances my clean sound, without being too obvious. On the other hand, with the rate at 0 and depth at 10, a flanger-like sound can be achieved.
This is a perfect match for the music I play. My current band plays dreamy indie rock with new wave influences and occasional noisy outbursts... Imagine The Cure meets The Cardigans meets Sonic Youth, or something like that.
I've been playing for about 15 years, owned tons of different gear, but this is definitely a keeper.

Keep in mind too that I only use chorus on clean sounds for a little atmosphere. It is analog, but it's not quite a warm as the older CE-2 or a Choralflange (of course).

These are very good units if buy them used, as I did. I can't say that I would pay $80.00 for a new one, I'd most likely get the Ibanez CS-9 RI instead. Seeing as I don't use this effect very often, I'm not too picky about the sound, but this is a nice sounding unit. Again, I'd recomend finding a used one for half the price of new.

Pretty good. Sounds good in mono, and you can get a lot of variety. My only complaint is that there is not a whole lot of depth, especially in stereo mode. It just kind of "sits atop" your sound. To counter this, I turn the "wet" amp's bass up a lot more than the "dry" amp, and that helps, but it's still pretty transparent. It is a really nice chorus if you want a slow, watery chorus. It reminds me of Rush-just a subtle, fairly slow chorus.

The sound has some left to be desired. A CE-2 sounds way better; fuller and deeper, but it's a mono unit. For a good stereo unit that is fairly affordable, this is about as good as it gets. I really like the Uni-vibe chorus, but it's fairly expensive, and it's not the "traditional" chorus sound. But this unit is way better than a DOD ice box or anything else in this price range.

This is the best chorus pedal I've ever used. It actually enhances the instrument's tone & sound the way a pedal is supposed to do! I also got it at a fantastic price. I highly reccommend using e-bay to buy effects pedals. There are lots of them on there, & you can get them at a reasonable price. Just watch the auctions closely, set a maximum price, & wait. If you lose an auction, just go to another. It took me 4 auctions to get this pedal at the price I wanted, & I'm glad I waited! The Boss CH-1 Super Chorus is a fantastic pedal that delivers the goods.

I'm using this with super strats mostly. Marshall TSL 602 combo and a 1960A cabinet. It's not noisy. Boss stuff is high quality. I can get a Leslie cabinet like sound with this. Think 'It don't easy' by Ringo Starr. And if I really want it over the top I can add a Boss DD-5 digital delay to it. I mostly like adding a little swirl to my lead sounds. It kind of reminds me of Pink Floyd. The sound is more pronounced the cleaner the amp is. It also sounds good with distortion too. You can go stereo with this pedal. I chose this over the Boss CE-5 chorus ensemble because I felt that there was too much going on with that.

THIS IS NOT A CE-1,2,3 OR 5. It is made with a different function. Why does everyone whine about it not sounding like a CE-5? Why, then, would Boss make 2 different pedals that sound the same? IT IS MEANT TO SOUND DIFFERENT TO A CE-5 PEOPLE. It is obviously a lot more subtle and it does what it is meant to do incredibly well with no tangible noise and at a decent price.
Only problem sometimes is a very slight lass of treble if you have it set to high. My setup:
88 Fender Strat->Boss OS-2->Boss ME-50->Boss CH-1 then to two amps: a Vox Cambridge 30R and Yamaha G50-210. This is a dreamy setup and the CH-1 completes everything by splitting the signal into a lush stereo signal. I hate the stereotypical chorus tone but the CH-1 just fills out the tone and makes it stereo. That's all I ask.

Here's where they fall apart. Maybe they're relying on the quality of their products, so they don't bother with customer service. But as soon as they don't make it anymore, they wash their hands of it. Pretty ordinary stuff, especially when compared to companies like Zoom, who don't have the quality of product, but have an excellent 'discontinued items' page on their website.

We range from slightly aggressive emo to ambient guitar indie pop and I have been playing for 15 years. As I said, I only wanted a chorus to fatten my tone and after all the other effects, split it to stereo. This CH-1 does that, no complaints. And at a reasonable price. I just wish people would stop comparing it to the CE-5- it isn't a CE-5, it doesn't pretend to be. If you wanted a CE-5, why did you buy a CH-1???

Everything is pretty self-explanatory. Level of effect, if you want the tone to be more high- or low-ended, rate and depth. Couldn't be simpler. Easy to get a good sound out of this. Manual probably explains everything, but I haven't looked at it seeing as it's so easy to use.

I run a Mexican Telecaster w/ a Hot Rails bridge pickup installed -> Fender PT-10 -> Crybaby Wah -> Ibanez DS7 -> Boss CH-1 -> Boss CS-3 -> Boss DD-20 -> Fender FM65R. This effect completes everything perfectly, no matter what settings I have. Great for a Floydish clean, ambient tone or adding some flavor into heavy solos. Not too subtle but not too dominant either - I actually chose this over the CE-5 because that seemed too subtle for my liking. It adds very little noise, if any at all. Adds a lot of color to your tone. Works with all kinds of music, from Floyd to Alice in Chains to GnR and anything else you can think of.

If I lost it or it was stolen I'd get another one ASAP! Best chorus pedal I've played, only one I can think of that surpasses it is the CE-20, and thats a bit of overkill in my opinion. I only need one setting but it's so versatile that it fits with everything. Fantastic pedal

I'm using a Fender Super 112 (6L6's 1x12 combo) Various guitars, mostly Fat Strat & Les Paul. Other effect in the chain are : Keeley modded Boss Blues Driver, Keeley modded Tube Screamer, Boss DD-3, Boss CH-1.
This is my second time around with this pedal. I had one a short time ago, and thought after reading some other input, that i might like the vintage Ibanez cs-9 chorus better. So I found a used one at a guitar show and traded my original CH-1 for the CS-9. I realized after spending some quality time with the Ibanez unit, that it did not interact very well with overdrive tones. At least not to me. It seemed to accentuate the higher freqencies, and the overdrive sounded a little shrill. However, it DOES sound fabulous with a clean setting! So, considering that I play with at least some overdrive most of the time, I decided to get another CH-1. The CH-1 is more subtle than the CS-9, but I really don't like my effects to be " in-your-face". Like others have said, it will fatten things up without being real obvious.

I play mostly blues based rock covers with a band that gigs 2 or 3 times a month. I've been doing the guitar thing for about 27 yrs.
Considering that I came back once, I guess I would again if anything happend to this CH-1. It seems to be the perfect fit for what I'm doing. I did compare it to the CE-5, but I couldn't hear any noticeable difference. The saleman did try and talk me into some other chorus......." the most awesome chorus you ever heard" .........maybe so, but it was also the most expensive chorus I ever heard. Besides, it wouldn't fit on my pedalboard which would open another can of worms.

My main instruments are synths and keys and I have recently taken up bass guitar. I bought this pedal to liven up the static sounds of some of my really old stuff - and that it really does well. I also have an Ibanez GSR 200 bass guitar which I tend to just play through the mic input on my hi-fi or through one of the channels on my Behringer MX2004, and the chorus sounds really cool. Some say that too much effect can make the sound too processed. This is true but it also has the scope for making a bland bass sound more synth-ey - great with keyboards for electronic music.

Excepting it runs on a PP3 nine volt battery (although there is a power adaptor input) all boss's pedals are bomb proof milled from what looks like - and certainly feels like - a solid piece of steel. Nice thick paint finish, metal panel underneath the knobs and chunky input jacks. An elephant could stand on this! Even the boxes for these pedals are pretty substantial - should last forever.

My style of music has been described by many as having 'Ambient, complex instrumental textures'. (I'm not sure what style I'd call it myself to be honest!)I compose instrumental music using electronic, synthetic sounds, piano and strings and heavily layered pads and harmonies.
I have been playing for sixteen years and in that time have acquired a lot of equipment - in order of acquisition:
Yamaha PSS 470 keyboard
Technics EX50 double manual organ
Original 1960's Stylophone
Korg 01/wFD Synth
Evolution MK-125 MIDI Controller
Casio CT-101 vintage keyboard
Peavey KB-100 Combo Amp
Yamaha DJX Keyboard
Yamaha DX7 Synth
Fostex VF08 Hard Disk Recorder
Behringer MX2004A Mixer
Oberheim MC-1000 88 note weighted MIDI Master Controller
Korg MicroKORG Synth
Boss PW-2 Power Driver
Ibanez GSR-200 Bass Guitar
Boss CH-1 SUPER Chorus
...oh and the kitchen sink!
Lost or Stolen? Yeah I'd get this one again or try the Bass Chorus (I bought this one because it was ten quid cheaper and I didn't know the difference!) I intend to collect a few of these in the future (Flanger, Phaser, Reverb...) becase you can connect them in a variety of different ways to achieve many different effects.
Love - painted my favourite blue, really well made, looks cool.
Hate - not so much a hate, but never a fan of PP3 square batteries connected by a flimsy wire. Care required here.
Favourite feature - can turn a boring, bland, static mono sound into a cool stereo one with interesting animation and movement - always a good thing...
I did not compare the CH-1 to anything else.
Wish list - be cool if it ran on a single AA battery with the connectors mounted inside the pedal rather than that flimsy wire.
This pedal sure does help me make music. It works well with my PW-2 which I have used to distort the sounds of my old Casio - from bland to lead synth! Amazing!

It is pretty easy to get a good sound out of this. I recommend leaving the level and EQ knobs at 12 o'clock, and playing with the rate and depth knobs. I leave the rate knob at 7 o'clock and the depth at 9 o'clock to fatten the sound just a little without making the tone sound too digital.
Sound Quality
:

Some people say this pedal is subtle, I agree. You need to increase the depth significantly to make this pedal stand out, especially if you are in a heavy metal band and looking to fatten up your tone. I use a Schecter C1 Classic ->Dunlop wah-wah->MXR compressor-> Boss Metal Zone->Boss EQ->MXR Phase 90->Marshall JCM2000. Maybe I'm not a big fan of the chorus 'sound', but it seems that when the rate and depth are turned up, the guitar has a sterile, digital sound, like an overprocessed guitar tone. But for what it does, it's a good pedal.

I use an Epiphone Les Paul Standard/Fender Fat Strat MIJ with a Boss Metalzone, Dallas Rangemaster treble boost homemade clone, EHX Small Stone and a home made tube amp.
