As easy as any other stomp box effect. You would have to be kind of a knucklehead not to figure this thing out. The manual is pretty good-it gives some useful settings but other than that, who really needs a manual for a stompbox?

I plug in an Anderson classic into a Ernie Ball volume pedal, Fulltone clyde wah, Fulltone fulldrive 2, SIB varidrive, Fulltone Supa-trem, Fulltone choral-flange, then voodoo lab microvibe, then the dd-5. I keep the dd-5 on all the time so the lack of true bypass does not affect my tone at all (when it is off). I would say that the sound is very sterile but that is to be expected since it is digital. All the modes on the dd-5 sound pretty good (I don't have the expression pedal so I don't use the last 4 modes). Some people have criticized the reverse mode-I actually think it's not bad (not as good as the line 6 delay modeler). In general, the sound quality is more than adequate and expected for a digital delay.

Boss is unbelievable. I used to have the metal zone and the GE-7 equalizer, both that kept on ticking for years. I also had the auto wah that never gave me problems. In general, Boss reliability is unmatched. I have had problems with Line 6 (I used to own the line 6 delay modeler and a flextone plus but both were defective) but I have never had problems with Boss products.

I play all kinds of music and have been playing for about 17 years. The dd-5 is not perfect but I wanted a digital delay over an analog delay (I didn't want to shell out 600 bucks for a SIB echodrive) and I guess I got what I wanted. I would say the sound is a bit sterile but it's supposed to be that way. I have owned the Dan echo (pretty warm sounding but very unreliable), the Line 6 delay modeler (too many effects-why do you need that many delay units??-and unreliable), the Ibanez DE-7 (good but I wanted to fool around with the reverse delay that the dd5 has) and I would say the dd-5 is equal if not better than all of those. If someone stole it, I would maybe just buy the SIB echodrive but I'm not sure. Generally, the dd5 is good, not great. However, it would be a worthwhile purchase for its reliability (I have absolutely no doubt this pedal will never give me trouble).

Almost perfect. Just the fact that the delay decays naturally when you turn the unit off instead of an abrupt stop (like on the earlier versions and on most other brands) is reason enough to buy this pedal.
The tempo input is great for syncing your delays to the beat of a song. I can go from rock-a-billy slapback to outerspace effortlessly.

Kinda hard to get the times right without a tap tempo pedal (don't buy that Boss crap, just get a cheap keyboard sustain pedal for $10). Other than that you can get some classic U2 sounds out of this as well as play around with some decaying effects and stuff. Very nice.

well i have never owned one, nor do i want to right now. I had a DD-3 and I have a DM-2. I liked the DD-3 alot, and I would have kept it if I didn't have needed the money. I had been in a band that had a total of 2 DD-5s, and I do not think its as good as the DD-3. I think the DD-5 is a little to harsh in comparison to the DD-3. I also think that the DD-5 has alot of gimmicks that just aren't really important. I personally didn't even like the hold feature on the DD-3, because I think its a little hard to use. The Pan delay feature is a kewl idea, but I think the sound quality on the DD-3 is better. But I guess you sacrifice alot fo delay time for that extra tone. And I should know that now that I have a DM-2 (which I love, but can't compare because its analogue). The reverse feature is a kewl idea, but poorly done on this because you can't take the original signal out (which makes it sound a little cheesy).

I use an Ibanez Universe with a crate T672 Half-Stack. It sits in the chain with my Boss Metal Zone, Flanger, Phaser, Noise Suppressor and my Crybaby Wah. I couldn't ask for a better setup, The beauty of some of these combinations still suprises me, even though I've been playing with them for half a year. Fairly simple. The 11 different modes have been covered by others. Easy to get the basic delay sounds you want; however, the sample mode does take some practice to use effectively. But other than that there were no hangups for me. Have not tried the tap tempo yet. It's a box, you step on it, it delays.

I use a G&L ASAT with a Fender DeVille. I does not make any unwanted noise at all. I also have an Ibanez AD99 Analog delay. I like them both for different reasons. Digital delay and analog delay are really completely different effects. The DD-5 replicates the signal of your guitar exactly, and I like the way my G&L sounds, so I don't mind hearing it again. The analog delay gives you back a dark interpretation you signal, I like that too. The DD-5 works MUCH BETTER in live situations. The analog is used in the studio sometimes, and at home. My DD-5 sees much more time than my analog unit. If you have a good sounding guitar and amp, this pedal will sound great. I listen to alot of U2, so I have a rather high standard for delay,LOL, and I can rip off the Edge fairly well, although a EH deluxe memory man really sounds like the Edge. It does tend to place some drag on the signal when it's off, but to offset this, the DD-5 fades out when you turn it off, rather than cutting off abruptly, which I REALLY like. This pedal is very high fi, as one would expect with a digital unit that doea what it's supposed to.
Everybody knows it's on, hehe. The hardcore analog freak might not like this pedal, but as I stated before, analog delay is just a different effect entirely. The reverse mode I've never found to be very exciting, but it's fun to play around with. Try this, put it on mode 4 and turn up the feedback and delay time all the way and play a bunch of different licks. IT SOUND LIKE SONIC MAYHEM!!! All of you licks will be played over and over again. But I usually tune the level up half way, the delay time about 40%-60%, the feedback about 50%, and mode on 3. doesn't do some of the stuff an analog does, duh, but an analog can't do the thing the DD-5 does. I enjoy the sound of a good digital delay, and this is a good one. Believe me, I've heard some really bad digital delays. I also use a coloursound WAH-WAH, a mesa boogie V-twin, and an EH Bass Balls (when it works, which is rare) Sounds best to my ears when it's last in the chain. Oh yeah, if you buy this pedal and are planning to use batteries, E-mail me so I can go buy some Duracell stock!!!!!!

I'm using this whith a PRS Swamp Ash Special, Mesa Boogie Heartbreaker, I also use a Marshall Supervibe, and a Cry Baby Wah. The delay sounds great with little or no noise at all. I think this baby does a great job. The tap tempo function is a newly discovered kick ass feature for me. I have had this pedal for like 3 years and never used it except for basic delay. You gotta use the switch it's like night and day. you can change the delay speed for different solos midstream. I figured out how to use it in under 10 minutes. As for the switch I built one using Radio Scrap parts for 8 bucks, and it took me less than a 1/2 an hour.

Overall this pedal is great. If it were stolen I'd gun the dude down and peel it from his bleeding hands. I play all kinds of music and this thing has never let me down. It eats batteries like the energizer bunny on steroids. If you gig with it using batteries plan on at least one per set. Get (build) the tempo switch it rocks. I actually got mine for free. Bought it with a digital metalizer and returned that piece of crap and teh clerk refunded me the price of both pedals. Long live pawn shop crack heads.

The sound quality is the best out of any echo unit I have ever tried! And I tried them all looking for the best! On all settings it is quiet, no hum, and seriously, just great. I can't say enough about this so maybe I'll just say it's the best. I use it with a boss super phaser, a crybaby, a danelctro daddy-o, and a crate GFX-120. It sounds shitty with tha amp distortion (because I hate the amp and everything does) but when used with the danelctro it sounds great. I've also used a boss metalzone on occasions and it sounds awesome with that.

I''m playing an electric fiddle, if anyone else is, I'm using a Barbera five-string bridge. I patch through the DD-5, then into an Alesis Nanoverb for ambiance, then into an L.R. Baggs Para Acoustic(which by the way, is pure gold for any acoustic player,) into a solid-state acoustic amp. I've never heard any noise whatsoever. My setup is pretty quiet, and the Nanoverb is the loudest thing out of the whole chain. There's no hi-cut control like on the Dano's, but that's no biggie for me. I highly recommend getting a cheap unlatching pedal for the tap delay(you can get them for like ten bucks at a keyboard shop.) The tap delay is the one I use the most. It adds a great, lush echo to solos. I love U2, and I can get that type of sound from this. The one I haven't used at all is the reverse mode, where Boss tried to make a reverse echo-type deal that doesn't sound all that great. The hold mode is nice, since I can play a two-second loop, and solo over top of it, and practice with some backup. I also use it in mode 2, with short delay, and put over chorus and reverb to get a real thick, ensemble sound.

If I lost this, I'd probably get another one, just because it's got everything I need in a delay, and not (too)much more. I've had mine for about two months, using it every time I get on stage, and it doesn't get in the way of the rest of the band, although that's up to the person using it. Once again-GET THE AC ADAPTER!!!

Initially, I was impressed with the variety of functions the DD-5 offered. After purchasing the pedal myself though, it has left me quite disapointed. True, it does have a few options which are usable - like the reverse, delay and hold. Unfortunatly though, settings 8-11 require an additional purchase for tempo.

4 knobs.....eq level (controls volume of repeats), repeat (controls number of repeats), delay time (controls delay time), and mode (selects from 11 diff modes) pretty easy to use/dial in a sound.....some of the modes (8-11)are useless without the optional tap tempo thing.....two second delay is useless, mode 7 (pan delay) is useless unless you have two power amps and cabs.....don't get me wrong, this pedal is the shit!!!! i usually keep it on mode 3 with the delay time at 60% and the repeat at 60%....sometimes use it in mode two with a slapback delay and mode 6 for the reverse delay.....mode 1 is short delay, mode 2 is longer delay, mode 3 is longer, mode 4 goes to two seconds, mode 5 is the hold mode (just loops a two second sample of playing.....pretty useless) mode 6 is reverse, mode 7 is pan and modes 8-11 is tap tempo shit.......with all that shit packed on there, it still is an easy pedal to use.....

i play a mis of pearl-jammy shit and limp bizkit/deftones heavy shit......a real must have in any guitar set up......not limited to guitar though....my vocalist has a dd-5 he keeps permantently on his voice.....kicks ass for either.......delay is my favorite effect of all time...it's so versatile....the i bought the dd-5 because it's the only pedal i could find with delay and reverse......i wish boss would make a delay pedal with just delay and reverse.....and cheaper damnit!!! but the dd-5 is the only boss delay that lets the delay fade after you turn the pedal off....which is really useful and practical......if this pedal was stolen i would definitly buy another one......i have at least one song i've written with my band that requires the reverse delay mode........and a few solos that do too....i use the standard delay settings on the 20+ songs that we have written......i can't get enough of it.....it goes good with every effect i own especially the whammy on the two octaves up mode......spacey sounds, dude......it's awesome with the gonkulator too and the flange...basically everything.....buy this damn pedal!!!!!

Easy out of the box if you have a good idea of what you're looking for and a vague idea of the principle of delay. The manual has some interesting suggestions for settings, but i didn't buy it for reading material.

My setup: Either a yamaha pacifica (s-s-h) or an Epiphone SG copy or either of my synths or my drum machine through (in no order) EH Big Muff Pi, MXR Distortion +, DOD Death metal, nondescript old flanger, Boss Super Phaser, DOD Vibro-Thang, Ibanez Sountank Chorus, Crybaby wah, Digitech XP-100, Digitech SP-300 and the DD-5, always at the end.
All that mess into an Ampeg Reverberocket that is utterly rebuilt.
It really has no noise problems at all. The effects are typically 'cold' and digital (hence the name of the pedal) but not weak, really. My favorite artists (Aphex Twin, They Might Be Giants, Skinny Puppy, etc) don't sound like me, so it doesn't matter.
I like the third click and I use the fifth to hold ostinato figures to compose melodies over.

I can depend on it as much as any other effects in my setup because i treat them all fairly well. I use it without a backup.

My music isn't easily described, at least as i hear it. BUT it is suited to my use. I have been playing some kind of instrument for 15 years now, and have had exposure to a fair amount of the non-boutique world of gear. The DD-5 is a good pedal for what is billed as. My favorite thing to do with it is to put it on the eighth notch and crank everything all the way up as i attempt to cut through the resultant din. It really has helped to make music, as any good effect will do. It also helps to enforce a sense of timing in what i'm playing. Overall a neat box.

Les Paul, wah, whammy, ds1, dd3, chorus, marshall. To all of you idiots out there who say "Aw, damn, it sounds to DIGITAL, it sucks!"-----well look at the freakin pedal. it says "digital" delay. if you don't like it, get another one that sounds more analog. I think this sounds like a delay should: clean, precise, and simply perfect. Kicks the Danelectro delay's ass!!

This pedal is not difficult to use at all. All the other reviewers that say it's difficult are obviously too lazy to figure out how to use this pedal effectively. There are 11 modes; just set your pedal to each mode and see what each one does.

This pedal absolutely rocks. You can record short riffs and solo over them with mode 5, which is pretty cool. The sound overall is great; you can switch the feedback and volume of the delayed notes, as well as change the delay time from .001 seconds(1 millisecond) to 2 seconds(2000 milliseconds). The only major fault I can see with this pedal is when the feedback is 2/3 of the way up or higher, in which case the sound gets insane, because the delayed notes like never go away. You have to be playing something really slow to have the feedback up. But that is the only problem, and it sounds great nonetheless.

This pedal works for just about anything. I don't see how anyone could dislike this thing; it can do anything you want a delay to do. I recommend everyone to get this thing.

This pedal is extremly easy to use in that, it includes up to 11 modes. But it doesnt stop there, a person could make one of the modes completely different, with the time it takes on delaying, to the depth of its echo. To learn how to work it right off isn'y hard either, just playing with it for 5 minutes I got the hang of it.

My guitar and amp are from the Fender Company and with this pedal the sound can just go so far. I played the first song i ever wrote with this pedal and it puts a whole new ans awsome bend on it. I find very few things to change about this pedal, this isn't one of them. (my personal favorite mode is mode 8. so if u get to play with it, try that one.)

The only reason that i gave this area a lower rating is that it will munch on, chew up, and just suck dry batterys. they happen to last kinda ling but within a week of using this pedal at least 30 min a day, it ran dry.

Overall, the pedal rocks. As I mentioned earlier it puts whole new twists on old songs and inspires even greater new ones. I like this pedal and I'm glad i got it. If you have the money to spend, this would not be a bad way to spend it...

I only give it a six because there is so much you can do with it that it is overwhelming at first. There is just so much to do with it. Manual made it a little easier to use. READ IT!

I'm using a yamaha guitar and an amp I don't even know the name of that really sucks and this pedal still sounds great. The effects go from super fast delay to something like 5 seconds. Very big range when coming to delay. I can get the delay from LImp Bizkit, POD, and even some kool stuff korn does (my favorite band). Has great sound no extra noise when pedal is on or off just the effect (when on). Sounds very natural. Sounds good with my Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion which sucks. Only two pedals I have.

I like to play a sound consisting of a korninian crunch from one of the first to albums mixed with the kool ragae jazz type sounds of incubus. Very nice. I have been playing for about a year and a half just long enough to know if something sounds good or not. I would have gladly paid $500 for it I'm totally infatuated with this pedal. If it were lost or stolen i would gladly buy another and then hunt down and brutally beat the guy that stole or found it and take my pedal back. Definitely brings out the creative side. If you don't like this pedal you obviously abused as a little child. Awesome
