Ease of Use : 10
Easy to use. Just sliders.

Sound Quality : 8
I'm running this with a Crate GTX 100, guitars are Strat, S.G., ES 335. The key to this pedal is to run it through the effects loop, if you have one on your amp. It still is a little noisy, but it does the job. I have it on pretty much all the time. I use it to scoop the mids a little. Like I said it does the job. My chain is simply, dunlop WAH, Envelope Filter, Boss BD-2, Digitech Digidelay. I run the chorus and E.Q. through the effects loop. Ive moved them all around and this is what works for me. This pedal does exactly what I wanted it to do, nothing more.

Reliability : 10
It's a Boss

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never used it.

Overall Rating : 9
This pedal works for me. I play a jazz, blues, country thing so my sound is always evolving. I've been playing a long time and have always had an E.Q. in the loop, it doesn't mess with the other effects if you keep in the effects loop. If it were stolen I'd replace it.

NOISE! I can't believe Boss would make such a peice of ****.

Worked for the short time I used it.

Never used them.

Overall Rating : 1
The noise produced by this thing is unreal, totally useless for recording, passable in a live environment. Think about it, there's a mod out there to replace some of the junk inside with better quality electronics to get rid of the noise. why buy it if you have to mod it to work? Try the mxr 7 band instead. This pedal ruined me for Boss, last pedal I bought from them. If they hear that noise and think that's ok for a $100 pedal, I'll give my business to somebody else.

Seven band EQ with a boost and cut for volume. It don't do nothing.

Sound Quality : 1
I use good equipment and I've been playing for almost a year and I am pretty good and I wanted a EQ pedal to even out my awesome tone and smooth it out better. That is why I bought it but it sucks and it didn't make my tone cleaner like it was supposed to do. I still get a lot of feedback so this is useless and doesn't even work. RIPOFF.

Brownsville thug-->Brownsville MT500/Metal Tone-->DOD FX70 Metal-->DOD FX86-B DOD Death Metal-->DOD FX80-B Compressor/Sustain-->DOD FX40-B Graphic EQ-->Jimi Hendrix wah wah-->boss chorus-->Boss GE 7 EQ-->Crate MX120R Amp, distortion channel.

I run all the distortions at maximum to get the tone of Joe Satrianni. My CRATE IS AT LEAST AS GOOD AS JOE SATRIANNIS CRATE AMP. I have my Crate on 10-every knob on 10 and a Rocktron Nitro with 20db of gain in the loop.

I thought the GE 7 pedal would help but it does nothing. Joe Satrianni plays a Brownsville Thug like mine. Why can't I get his tone?

Don't try this. It makes no difference in my pedal board. RIPOFF.

Like I said. I'm pretty good for playing for a year. I'm as good as Joe Satrianni but its frustrating because my rig doesn't sound as good as his. I am trying to get on tour with him but I need a good rig. The BOSS GE 7 did nothing to help. I am going to trade it for a Metal Zone.
Don't buy this pedal becuz it suks. I'll be on the G3 tour in a year, guaranteed.

it's an equilizer, not a space ship :) simple to use - a level control plus 7 bands of eq. all i was looking for.

Sound Quality : 10
i bought it to put it in the effect loop of my marshall jcm 900 and it really did the job. the amp till then sounded harsh, too much high frequencies and no bottom. 2 minutes after and i had a way better sounding amp! it's not noisy (but it's the only stompbox i use), it doesn't colour you tone. great.

Reliability : 10
i do depend on it. the amp without the ge-7 sounds bad. the box is also very reliable - but it's a boss, what do you expect?

no idea... never needed it.

i play mostly r'n'r. i read about how i could improve the sound of my amp and getting the ge-7 was an option. got it used, cheeap & in very good conditions. it is a simple, effective and very good solution for my problem.

of course one must mess around to get the setting you want for either "what-ever" or that channel switch or lead switch. I bought this from a friend and no manual was with it. ( traded it for a 6-pack of Michelob ultra!)

Sound Quality : 7
it makes noise. I initially used it/ bought it to tweak a decent clean tone out of my Randall amp for my Strat on the clean channel. That actually works as Randalls have a bass-midrange lock on tone that you cannot escape especially with the rg100sc versions ( you can get massive bass rumbling crunching distortions from hell/heaven). Dimebag gave me the idea to try this and it really opened up the amp for clean tones . I noticed at least 50% of everone has problems with this thang.. I have a long effects chain through a Furman power conditioned board and run guitar into board and into amp ( not through the effects loop). I then use an effects loop with JUST the Boss EQ and it works good as most of my use of this is live, the noise the pedal makes is not that much an issue.

I play basically anything... in the past 5 years I have played in a southern rock band, a progressive Christian band ( who I really used this pedal with exclusively with), an 80's metal band and our originals/blues duo. It's just too noisy to use in quiet situations and only good for one or two switching options in live music which it is best at such as over-all EQ help or solo timbre. For Randall amp sufferrers, Dimebag used an MXR to do it for him and it works! If you use a SS Randall- try it.....and celebrate with a "blacktooth grin"

Ease of Use : 6
It's simple enough to use, in theory, but I haven't been able to get a good sound out if it yet. The layout and all makes sense though, and is very straightforward.

Sound Quality : 3
This pedal is a 3-time loser in my book:

1.) The second you plug this into your chain, it sucks tone. A/B it a few times before even turning it on and you'll see. I lose alot of treble with this pedal even being in my lineup.

2.) Turning it on, it's pretty loud, and gives out a constant hiss with the level up.

3.) The EQ options here I guess are ok, but on alot of settings it gives me this weird "glitchy" sound with my pick attack. Kind of like a compressor would, but worse.

Overall, this pedal does nothing for me. I've had it for a month now, and keep trying to like it in different applications, but it just keeps working its way out of my setup.

I was hoping to use it to scoop my mids (the only real use for this pedal I think) to get a more singing/professional sounding tone for solos. Slash, Warren Haynes, etc. While this unit gets you in the ballpark, it's just too much of a cheap sounding effect that messes with the rest of your tone too much to keep in a rig.

HOWEVER, there's not a whole lot of choice out there for Graphic EQ's, so I'm gonna send this out for a mod and see if that does the trick.

FYI, this review is based on: Strat->Boss GE-7->Ibanez TS-9->Fender Blues Deluxe

Reliability : 8
Looks pretty reliable. I bought mine used and some of the white plastic EQ level covers had fallen off, so those are probably the only unreliable part.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 3
Like I said: what are your options here really? Unless you want to use rackmount gear, there's just not alot of Graphic EQ options available. I see some potential in this unit, enough that I'm gonna send it out for a mod and see how that goes. If it works out well I'll review the mod I choose.

If you're determined to use this, it would best be applied before a distortion pedal, or in an effects loop.

Ease of Use : 10
It has 7 sliders for standard / classic eq set up like on old sckool hi-fis or old boogie amps. Easy to use and understand.

Sound Quality : 10
Absolutely fantastic. I am not an anal sound freak who has been confined to his bedroom like perhaps the previous pundit. This is a practical simple industry standard bit of gear that has a number of uses in a live rig. I use it in the fx loop of my marshall to provide a solo boost which is controllable. It does that maginificently better than any other pedal for the money. It can be used to balance your signal when doing a guitar change or to shape the tone for a different song etc. It is very useful bit of gear that you will find a on many GIGGING guitarists pedal boards.

Reliability : No Opinion
I have neever had a boss pedal go wrong - ever. I am 40 and have always gigged Boss stuff. Recently I was duped into getting a Digitech tuner. Bad mistake!

Customer Support : 10
No opinion because nothing has ever gone wrong so I have not spoken to them!!!!

Brilliant pro piece of gear that should be on your pedal board somewhere.

This pedal is very simple to use. Provided of course, you know what the controls do (which isn't difficult to understand).

Sound Quality : 3
The controls all do what they are supposed to, except for a few issues.
OK......
I'm not sure if there are bad batches of this unit or not. But this pedal lowers the fidelity of my guitar sound.

Now, if ALL of the sliders are set to zero, there will be virtually no difference between on/bypassed signals. However, there IS a detrimental quality difference between having/not having this unit in your chain.

More importantly, if you move ANY of the sliders UP or DOWN,
you will notice(unless you have a hearing problem) a slight non-musical distortion of your signal(due to interfering noise) and a faint hiss. You may not be able to detect it if you play with lots of drive already (and even then, it messes with my drive sounds).

NO EQ UNIT SHOULD DISTORT YOUR SIGNAL LIKE THIS. Especially when cutting frequencies

Other than that, it works just fine.

Reliability : 6
All these guys who say BOSS pedals are indestructible, must be repeating what the commissioned music store salesman said
I have had brand-new BOSS pedals cut-out/fail due to switches, 1/4" jacks, grounding issues, and loose AC jacks (during shows no less).
When they work(which is most of the time) they are okay.
Sure, the metal housing will last forever, but that doesn't imply fail-safe operation.

I still use some boss pedals though
(they have good delay-type and filter-type effects).
However, these GE-7 units are broken before they leave the factory.

Very very simple to use. Just adjust the sliders to shape your tone.

Sound Quality : 7
I play a American Series Strat through a Traynor YCV20 15W tube amp. I have owned this pedal for about a year. The first 3 months I had it in various areas of my pedal chain, going into the amp input. I experimented to find that it sounded better before my OD pedal. I played this way for a while and my ears became sensitive to my new shaped sound. I played with the GE-7 in this position for some time. For some reason I then decided to insert it in my amps FX Loop. Wayyy better sounding now. I left it there for a while and again got used to the sounds I was creating. My pedal collection began to grow and one day I just went F-it an removed all my pedals from my signal and began with the basics. A Boss SD-1 into the front of the amp, a EH SMM/W Hazarai delay and a modded Boss CE-3 in the FX loop. I liked this set up. I played this set up for the past several months with out the GE-7 being used at all. Recently I plugged in the GE-7 to try it out again. In the FX loop. I tried to adjust it to discover different sounds. I found myself screwing with everything. My OD pedal, my delay, my compression pedal, and the amp's Bass Mid and Treble settings. I screwed around for about an hour trying to get that sweet sound I found before I introduced the GE-7. Finally I stopped and went...Keep this simple ...What have I changed here? I removed the GE-7 and dialed in the sound I was trying to find again. I thought? Huh? Weird. I repeated the test a few times, GE-7 in the loop, GE-7 removed and put away completely. I even re-introduced the GE-7 and left it off. It robbed my tone when it was off even. This pedal is not true by-pass. In my experience it does rob tone.

It is my opinion that this pedal is a finicky pedal. It works well for some, and not for others. It will sound better in different positions in your FX chain. It would appear that the one constant thing here is it works best in the FX loop. If you really, really are "into your sound" and find yourself buying and selling pedals in your search for the perfect tone, you will not be satisfied with this GE-7 EQ. For me, it is back in the box and not being used. I may find a MXR 10 band and give it a try. It is true by-pass.

Reliability : 10
Rock solid reliability.

Overall Rating : 7
I have been playing now for about 25 or so years. I have 2 tube amps, 2 Fender guitars and several pedals. I would not replace this GE-7 if it were stolen or lost. I like the simplicity and durability of this pedal. It works like it should but it does rob your tone in my experience.

Easy to use. Very self explanatory really.
NO comparing it to the stock version. Read on

Here's the problem. It's noisy/Hiss souning and won't reproduce bass notes in fast succession without losing volume. I contacted Humphrey audio and they explained that tis unit "Sags" or becomes underpowered when in the heat of battle.
They cured all the problems and it's a pristine unit worthyof a '10' now compared to a 2 before.

Ease of Use : 7
OK It's fairly easy, but I'm giving it a 7 as it'll take a little getting used to at first. Once your over the first hurdle it'll give you a lot of fun, but as I say it's getting used to how the guitar frequencies work, patience is the key!

Sound Quality : 8
I use 2 marshals, an SLX & a 1987x plexi, I've ben using this pedal in front. First of all I used it to give a lead tone and boost, these are a bit noisy for that so I'd recommend upgrading a few components, that sorts it out. I found the sounds pretty good( if what you want is a straight forward enhancement of what you've got...guitar tone wise, think Slash, S.R.V ect), how ever I've discovered that straight outa the box these are best for cutting frequencies. As a rule i like the old approach of rolling of the volume for a cleaner sound, thats not always quick enough though, depending on what kinda music you play, so I took my time and got the GE-7 mimicking that "rolled off" sound that I like! Bingo, it works perfectly here to my liking.

Reliability : 10
It never ever goes wrong, tough construction, it'll take a few knocks.

Customer Support : No Opinion
never needed it.

Overall Rating : 9
I'm a Hard rock player, this does the job pretty good, If ya need to upgrade it, it's still not as expensive as some other EQ's, especially second hand. I've been playing for...mmm...23 years, For lead type sounds I've had stuff like GE-7, the KLON CENTAUR..(very smooth but not as versatile), the Ibanez TS-808 tube screamer I still use. A grafic EQ is much more diverse, loads more control over the sound, and is often great used in combination with a drive pedal to give extra control. If it were stolen I'd be pissed right off as I'm already gonna get another one so's to have 1 each end of my FX chain. There are better ones out there , but not at the price so you way it up, Definitely the most versatile type of pedal.

Easy to use...except that the sliders are very close together (as others have mentioned) but they stay put pretty well when you get them dialed in. Just a matter of using your ears and finding what works for you..

Sound Quality : 8
I use this through my effects loop...I don't detect any hiss running it like this...

This thing really helped me out...I'm kind of stuck with my current amp due to financial restraints (I'm not gonna buy another amp until I can get what I really want)...my current amp has a terrible high pitched sound in the drive channel that can't be dialed out with the on board eq...I've had good luck getting the frequencies I didn't like out of my tone and zeroing in on the ones I want with this thing...which is what an EQ is for! Since I'm mostly dropping frequencies out, my amp volume dropped too...no problem: I just bumped the level control up a notch.

Reliability : 9
Boss products are well built...this one is no different...if you leave it on all the time like I do, it will eat batteries...use the ac adaptor if you can...

Very easy to use once you know how EQ works and where to place it (read below)

Sound Quality : 8
Excellent sound quality now that I understood where to place it for my needs (been using it for past 10+ year with ****** sound quality!)
The main goal for me when buying this pedal was to have a relatively clean boost for the lead work. I thought it was making sense putting it in the effect loop to get this extra volume needed to make myself heard. BIG DISAPOINTMENT that i learned to live with until yesterday at rehersal.
Don't aske me why, but i spent some time the other day thinking back on that pedal and why it sounded so like crap when other people are so happy with it. ANSWER : if you want a clean boost for lead work place it LAST in the chain in your FX Loop. Mine was first in the chain, and was generating nothing but microphonic feedback, hiss whatever, enterint (boosted) the other pedals (boss delay and chorus). It is now working as it was supposed to do... after 10+ years of misuse!!!
It may sound stupid, which I might be, but as simple and logical as it seems to me today, it never was for the past years!
so if you want clean volume boost (even slight mid boost), LAST ON THE FX LOOP after ALL other pedals.

Nothing that hasn't been stated before

Sound Quality : 9
I stated in my previous review it had a lot of noise. I found that it must be placed last in the pedal chain (closest to the amp input) in order to be more silent. Sure wish Boss would have bothered to mention this in their manual. Oddly, the unit does not default to "On" when plugged in. Wish they had a user selectable switch that would determine if it was either on or off when first plugged in. As it is now, my Boss Metal Core goes "on" and the Ge-7 is "off" and don't you know I wish it was the opposite.

Very reliable, especially if you use a power supply instead of batteries.

For some reason no company wants to break away from the crowd and off more features in the individual pedals (like a state selection switch) or even an obvious On/Off switch. Oh well. Certainly not a great value new ($99) but you can find plenty on Craigs list or ebay for half that.

None of Boss's pedal manuals state the power is always on when it's plugged in even when the light is out so I certainly wouldn't give good marks for the first battery it costs to find that out. This is a fairly major oversight.

Sound Quality : 7
I think it's crap. It has a hiss or whoosh sound that gets louder when you play. At first I liked the pedal till I noticed that very annoying sound. Strange because their Metal Core pedal doesn't add any sound even when I crank the tone knobs. Other than that it's not a parabolic equalizer so it's not all that great to begin with. Any adjustments on a parametric brings up a pretty wide frequency area, not nearly as nice as a parabolic's exact frequency sharpness. But, I don't think anyone makes a parabolic pedal for some reason. Must admit I'm a beginner and this is all new to me.

I have a Peavey Classic 30 and a Gibson Mahogany with Burstbucker Pros that I like very much. I bought the GE-7 to add a ton of bass because that's the sound I like. The BB Pros really keep it from sounding muddy. It makes a really nice deep tone with the amp's bass at 100% and just the 100hz of the GE-7 at 100%. But I'll have to do without the GE-7 because that loud whoosh is just too annoying.

If you know anything about EQ, it's absolutely ok. I don't have a fantastic ear but I'm able to shape my tones to my liking pretty easily. It's 7 eq sliders and a volume slider. Can't ask for much easier. I had an MXR 6 band eq but the lack of a volume control or an on/off switch did it in for me. One other good thing: this was actually cheaper than either an MXR micro amp (booster) OR an MXR 6 band eq. It does both at once. That's why I chose it. Volume boost at your fingertips (well, so to speak...)

Sound Quality : 10
I've had MXR 6 band and 10 band eq's, a Pearl 8 band and 2 of these units, one Japanese and one Taiwanese. I couldn't tell any difference between the 2 Boss units. I use it for volume boost and sometime for modifying my tone a bit, especially to balance tone through my different amps.

I use a Fender Mustang, Jaguar and Strat (all Japanese) through a 1970s Vase Trendsetter valve head (with Marshall 210), a Peavey Classic 30 and a Fender Super 210 all valve. Pedals are always changing but there's usually a Boss LM-2 limiter, DS-1, GE-7, LS-2 line selector, AW-2 auto wah, Dunlop wah and Marshall EchoHead delay (FANTASTIC delay). I can't hear too much extra noise from, unless I go rank with the high frequencies. Used in moderation, it is excellent.

Reliability : 10
Boss 10/10. This is probably my 40th Boss pedal and not one has ever given me trouble. I've had 3 Washburn pedals- all had reliability issues. Zoom, likewise. Korg, ditto. DOD/Digitech...the same. Boss are just unbelieveable.

Customer Support : 6
They've started publishing their manuals online (about time) but they're not especially supportive. The bossarea.com site is the best resource (but it's not run by Boss, just by Boss fans). Bossarea is very cool.

Boss are fortunate that their products are such high quality, support is very rarely needed. Although, I'm sure they factored that in to their business plan...

Overall Rating : 10
I play mostly alterante/indie stuff, although I can't think that this pedal would especially one genre over another. Great little package, if used sparingly. It irritates me when people complain about it getting 'boomy' when they turn the bass up or 'shrill' when they boost treble. Be careful what you wish for...

Super Simple overall. Seven slices of the sound spectrum, wach with a slider for plus or minus (up to) 15 db. And an overall boost / cut slider for plus or minus up to 15 db.

The sliders are very very closely spaced, and 15db is crammed into like an inch of less of slider throw. If you have not used an eq device, note that a db or two makes a noticeable difference, so between the closely spaced sliders, and the short adjustment distance, it's awkward doing fine adjustments.

Sound Quality : No Opinion
I have not tried any other eq devices, so I cannot give this a rating relative to all eq boxes on the market. I do not use effects much -- just a little slapback delay and maybe a dab of compression, with mild amp power-tube overdrive so that I can go from clean to slight breakup with the guitar volume.

If you don't like to read, here's the executive summary: These are great! If you like details, read on.

1) If you've never used an eq before, get ready for a WHOLE NEW WORLD. These little magic boxes fix your tone the way an airbrush fixes a playboy bunny's cellulite and moles. No guitar or amp is totally perfect -- there's always something like too much muddiness or whatever that is hard to fix with the amp tone controls alone. Enter the eq -- which will let you fine tune the raspiness or muddiness OUT of your tone. It also lets you compensate for an amp's weak areas or adjust to a room that is harsh or flat. Some folks might use these to try to make a strat sound like a gibson, which you could (sort of) do, but that's not really my intent. I started by taking my absolute best guitar ('59 LP cloud-9 reissue), and I'd been pretty darn happy with the tone, yet was amazed that a few minor eq tweaks (like plus or minus 2 to 5db) SIGNIGICANTLY improved the sound. I just removed a little muddiness on the low strings, and presto! True perfection in the tone.

2) I use this through the EFFECTS LOOP -- where it's not at all noisy, and provides high quality tone. If you instead use it up front, between guitar and amp, you WILL get hissing noise, and the tones generally are not as likable, and become less so as you turn the amp gain up. In short, these are best through the effects loop, or if you don't have one, it will sound better in front of a clean amp.

3) I have a number of really super guitars, and was able to surprise myself with the improvements this little eq made to every single one of them. As they say, 'don't leave home without it'!

Id give it a 9 for sound quality, only because I can imagine there are better ones(but probably not in this price range). Just running it between my amp(Blues Jr) and guitar it is amazing. It's a tweaking pedal, let's you tweak your sound a bit closer to "it". The output level slide is what really makes this pedal for my rig, I dig the bluesy overdrive of my amp but I can really kick it off with this pedal to a whole 'nother level, just feels raw... Great for boosting lead work, and cleaning up and focusing your clean tones. I was actually about to replace my pickups before I got this, but it really enhances them and lets me get rid of some of their harshness in the mid-high range I was looking to change.

This is my first eq pedal so I can't really compare it with anything else, so if it ever got stolen I would probably try something else, see if I can upgrade to something a bit more diverse(a 10 band eq). That said though... I really like this pedal and would hate to lose it. It keeps the tone of my guitar really well, and runs buzz free. I play mostly bluesy type rock, and it really pulls my sound together so I love it.

To me it sounds very good when put between guitar and amp. I don't use it in the amps fx loop because I think it makes the amp sound flat.
Between guitar and amp I turn the bass a little down en the mids up (on the ge-7) this makes it all come to life.

Easy enough to use if you have any knowledge of EQ's.

Sound Quality : 9
This is the second time ive owned this pedal. I returned it the first time because I really didnt know what I wanted. I gave a MXR 6 band EQ a try but it didnt work well in my amps effects loop,,some sort of thumping sound happened when I added too much bass. This didnt happen with the Boss. I use this in the effects loop of my mesa boogie rectoverb and it works great. Ive tried it with a peavey classic 50 also and it seemed to actually quiet both amps a bit.Not as much as a noise suppressor but it help. Added benifit I guess. The pedal is not noisy at all,,,note, like I said in the above, ease of use column..You need a bit of knowledge when using these otherwise you will get noise like other people have said. It is best to cut frequencies with these.
If you go and raise every level to the max you will get noise. If you raise the volume level,,far right slider, up too far you will get noise. If you decide you only want to raise the levels, then lower the volume level to where your amp would be without the pedal.

Reliability : 10

I havent tried every EQ pedal out there,,but then again they should all pretty much do the same thing. Some have 6 bands,,others have 7 and some even have 10. I personally dont see the need for a 10band.
I mentioned above that I did try the MXR 6 abd EQ. Other than the noise I got through the loop of my amp I found not having a volume level on the unit bugged the hell out of me. So to me thats important. The Boss seems to do just fine for me so I have decided to keep it..Now Im happy.

I got this pedal to add some EQ to my Fender Pro amp which only has a volume and tone knob. I was surprised. I recently put a Fishmam active resonator pickup in my National Style O. It works fine but has a lot of treblle in this little amp. Not only did it solve the lack of miid and bass problem it increased the output gain ten fold. I plugged in a Les Paull Jr into the same amp with it. Wow. (The amp has been modified a bit with a Celestion Vintage 10 speaker and some different tubes) Its now a ten inch monster. Before the EQ I could play the amp up to 7 and 8. Now 2 on the volume does it. I play mostly acoustic guitars. I shoulld have bought this a long time ago.

Very clear sounding, I use it as a mid and volume boost for solos. I've heard this doesn't sound good with tube amps, but I don't seem to have this problem. Then again, my amp takes pedals very well. I've also heard that these are noisy, but I didn't find that at all either. Of course if you crank the volume to max its going to be noisy (like any pedal) but other than that, there really isn't any noticable buzz.

I would definately purchase this pedal again if lost or stolen.

i use this with a line 6 dl4, boss rv-3 reverb delay and proco turbo rat into a fender blues jr. This thing KILLS. It makes my amp sound like it's about to burst into flames in the very best way. When the reverb and delays get thick you can lose alot of volume and definition...step on this baby and it creates a My Bloody Valentine-esque in your face swirling mass out of what once was just indecipherable noise. Also, when used as a boost by itself it creates a nice crunchy 70's rock vibe...all around great pedal, indespensible. Not noisey at all.

For a Dirt/Crunch AC/DC tone this pedal is great for boosting leads.

I only use 1 channel amps & like one tone 100% of the time when playing live. If you play Hard Rock, have good tone pumping thru your amp & don't want more gain on top of your leads this pedal is one answer. I've tried just about every pedal on the market. My favorite is the Barber LTD. For now the LTD is at home in its box & the GE-7 is being used for live situations. The GE-7 doesn't sound like the LTD, but it does give a nice boost & a bit of gain if you peg the volume.
Boost the Mids, electric guitars are not your home stereo. You don't want the EQ settings in a V. Boost the Mid & you'll be happy with this pedal. Boss has been hit & miss with me. This is a great pedal, spend 5 minutes & dial it in.

Sound Quality : 10
I'm using the ge-7 in the effects-loop of my Mesa/Boogie Studio 22+. My amp didn't come with the onboard graphic eq so i bought (this) one. It works absolutely great, no hiss whatsoever. When i bought the Mesa, the sound was okay, but not excellent like i expected it to be. Since i read all these ravings about this amp, i decided to try to put a graphic eq in the loop of it, cause there are two versions of the amp, one with and one without the graphic eq, and that did the trick. Altho i like mids in my sound, I mostly use the "v" shape cause this amp has got the highest level of mids of any amp that i've heard.. Cuts thru the mix like a knife thru butter.
This thing is absolutely awesome, and small adjustments make a huge difference in sound. If you're having trouble adjusting your amp to your liking i encourage you to try and put a graphic eq in the loop, you won't regret it. It's a tool that i think every guitarist should have, no matter how good the amp itself sounds.

I think that it is a straight ahead device but any user would have to understand the different frequencies on each slider to really get the most out of it. For beginners or a good starting point, I would suggest to visit the Boss Website to review their guide / manuals for typical settings. Other than that I would trust my ears to see what you can create.

I have used this with my 87 and 91 Charvel, 84 American Strat, 05 Squire Tele, 73 Ibanez, and a Gabanelli Bajo Sexto. I have used the pedal with Crate, Marshall, Tech 21, and Vox amps.

Can be good to boost your signal or for rhythm work. The pedal can give your guitar a lot presence. I only have used it for clean guitar work for R&B, soul, funk, Tejano, Latin and rock work. I used it to boost the signal on the Bajo Sexto for Conjunto / Tejano music.

Pretty good with Chorus and Delay. Could not get a good combination with a distortion pedal.

It is a really noisy pedal after using it live for a couple of months.

Very easy to use, didn't even look at the manual.

Sound Quality : 10
No added noise from what I can hear, until the level is boosted extremely on it.

I see some people are writing about how they "can't use it in front of a high-gain pedal". Simple solution: use it AFTER the high gain pedal. Using the EQ after distortion/overdrive sounds a hell of a lot better than before. Think about it: you're using the EQ to cut some unwanted frequencies from your signal.. and then sending that signal to a pedal that generates those same undesired frequencies? That sounds ridiculous when you think about it. If you have the OD/DIST before the EQ in your pedal, you can easily cut the unwanted frequencies that your OD/DIST pedal is generating.

Bottom line: run your guitar through your overdrive/distortion, and THEN to your EQ. I'm sure you'll like what you hear.

As everyone has said before: BOSS. End of story.

BOSS products, from my experience, are EXTREMELY reliable.
I own BOSS CS-3, DS-1, MT-2, GE-7, and PH-3 pedals; and I've never had to replace one or get it repaired.

I'm in a punk-rock band, so you could imagine that aggressively stomping the shit out of the pedals would do some harm, but it clearly hasn't.
This pedal is perfect for me to raise the mids of my sound for a sharper tone that really stands out from the rest of the band, but doesn't hiss. The sound from this EQ pedal is uncomparable.
If something ever happened to this pedal, I would definately replace it with another GE-7. I don't care if they come out with a new model, this one works perfect for me.
I love the control. Anyone can work this pedal, and anyone can use it to get just the sound that they want.
It's perfect the way it is, I don't think any extra features would do it any better.
One thing to maybe add upon it is being able to have more than one EQ setting stored in it, but then again there is a BOSS twin-pedal that can do just that, so this one's fine for a compact pedal.

If you haven't tried this pedal, give it a shot.
Just remember: use it AFTER your overdrive or distortion, not before (unless you want it to do nothing but generate noise).

TIP:
GUITAR -> WAH -> COMPRESSION -> OD/DIST -> EQ -> MODULATION (phaser, chorus, flanger, octave, etc.) -> AMBIENCE (delay, reverb) -> AMP

Slide them up or down, EQ is an art though, its not somthing you can be taught, you can be taught basic pointers like where a snare drum has most of its energy etc, but the rest is a good ear and experience.
Or move them up and down and see if you find a sound that you like.

I couldn't believe how much hiss it generated, I would have never expected a massive gain in hiss with CUTTING frequencies, that just goes against everything!

I had a GE7 many years ago and pretty much left it on all the time, which led me to believe that "geez, this thing doesn't do too much for me." Recently I began a quest for a clean boost pedal, and happened upon a used GE7. It turned about to be just about what I was looking for. I play Strats or a Hamer through a mid-60s Bandmaster through 4-10s, then into a Tube Screamer, a Shredmaster and finally a Zoom 707-2. It sounds great with the level at zero, while the mids are boosted fairly high. Great tone!! No noise at all, no funky addition or subtraction of tone while disengaged. It does kind of kick the amp in the pants a bit even set at unity gain, but that's okay with me. Overall, a fantastic pedal. I just stomp it for solos or parts that need to jump out.

All EQ pedals are similar, even in the frequencies they control. Easy to operate but you need to understand what the level slider is for--to make the volume match when the pedal is engaged or disengaged if you're just shaping tone or say cutting feedback with an acoustic, or to boost volume appropriately for solos.

All EQ pedals are similar, but many reviewers of other brands say this pedal has the "Boss stank"--a hi-mid boost that's there even when the pedal is disengaged, you can't get rid of it, and I gather that's characteristic of many Boss pedals, so consider that when testing this pedal.

What I really want to say here: in quickly scanning these dozens and dozens of reviews I only saw one player suggest BOOSTING midrange for guitar solos. Everyone else seems to love the V-shape configuration that sucks all the mids out. This is what most people do with their stereos as well--it leaves nothing behind except the lows and highs so cymbals and vocal "s's" sizzle and bass-end tones come through stronger in the mix, which people seem to love. And SOME scooped-mid is par for the metal guitar scene, but think about it. Without any mids like a lot of other reviewers are suggesting--cutting the mids to just above -15dB!?--your tone is competing with the bass guitar and the cymbals, and who do you think will win that battle? You will if you crank it up, but the battle isn't for domination of the low and high frequencies(which will result in an incomprehensible mess for your sound man and your audience), the battle is for each player to fit into the mix to create music. Midrange is where the guitar lives because that's where guitar strings are tuned--why avoid the very tones that the guitar produces? A LITTLE BIT of scoop for metal rhythm playing can give you the true metal feeling while still allowing you to fit into the mix. The sound man can then adjust for the room. But for SOLOS, whether you play blues, rock, metal, deathmetal, speedmetal, grindmetal, buttmetal, jazz, zydeco, or nursery rhymes, my god, BOOST YOUR MIDRANGE! You will have a fatter, more professional, and much more satisfying sound that you will even be able to hear. Your favorite players only sound like they're scooping the crap out of their mids because I bet that's how you have your car or home stereo set--you're either boosting your bass and treble or heavily scooping your mids, or all three, if you're like most people. Kids start training your ears for the real thing--set your stereo not too far from flat and you'll hear what the band heard in the studio, get it? I promise you'll not only get used to it, but someday you'll look back and wonder how you ever stood the extreme settings you used to use, and same goes for your guitar. Extreme scooped mids may work in your bedroom to get an appealing stand-alone chugga-chugga sound, but if you want to sound good in a band setting you need to carve out your place in the midrange along with the singer, just like all your favorite players have done. Listen.

If you're a blues player you probably already know all this because you probably use a Tubescreamer which is a mid-boost/volume boost to slam the front end of a tube amp. Any EQ pedal can produce both of the same effects with even more control--mid boost and volume boost. Great trick and cheaper too if you get a cheaper EQ pedal than this one. I use a $20 6-band Rocktek BASS eq for blues guitar playing sometimes, cheap plastic so I don't know if it will last, but the effect is great and I like the two sliders in the midrange ballpark (640hz and 1280hz). No slider above 2400hz but again I don't care, I can cut or boost treble at the guitar if I want (Strat Plus). I also play bass so this is versatile for me.

The difference in price for EQ pedals is mainly in the quality of build. Boss is of good build. I don't understand how they can charge $99 for this though, it seems about double what it should be for such a simple device.

I know players read these reviews as much to learn about effects as to learn about a particular effect. Please see my comments in Sound Quality section. I've been playing for many years, have toured pro, played many bars and warmed up for national acts, played every blues-based form (metal, blues, rock), engineered in a small recording studio, and produced my own record in a real recording studio. Ask any real pro including your favorite player and he/she will tell you what I'm telling you in the Sound Quality section.

I play '91 Strat Plus (U.S. made) with gold Fender Lace Sensors in neck and bridge and silver in bridge, or '69 Les Paul Custom, through several different amps, my favorite of which right now is the Pignose G40V 40w all-tube combo amp (Bassman clone with 1st pre tube ganged for high gain) driving an Acoustic 104 closed back 6x10" cab (yes 6 10" speakers, amazing, can also use for bass), or for smaller settings I run the combo's 1x10" Eminence Ragin' Cajun + a 10" Jensen Mod 50 in a separate closed back EarCandy cab. I also have a Yamaha 240w 4x12" cab that thumps like mad but I'm in love with 10" speakers right now for guitar.

An update from my previous review of 11/07/2004 from James Acker (me).
I know lots of folks are aware of a severe noise problem with these pedals. It may manifest itself more in higher gain, epsecially tube amps, and by high gain I don't mean jsut Metal, I mean also blues when you are on the lead channel. It was unusable because of the added noise. Well, a short time after reviewing it, I bought the Brian Wampler mods for the GE-7. He sent them, they were sitting on a shelf while I bought other pedals...I finally got around to trying out the mods. I seem to have misplaced some parts, but am fixing that, meanwhile I did the replacement of the three IC chips, that is part (not all...there are also 3 capacitors to change out, I need to reaquire these) of the whole mod. It was EASY, took about 30 minutes total and that was with obsessive checking-rechecking. Could have done it in 20. Piece of cake.

NOW...even with only half the mod done, this pedal is all I dreamed it should be. It is crystal clear, it adds that sparkle, it does exactly what it is supposed to, and what I hoped it would when I bought it. So far noise free.

Wamplers' mod is great. I will install the three caps, and may even do some of the tone stack adjsutmetnts (can get deeper bass, clearer mids with a few other cap changes).

I rated this pedal, no I rate it with HALF of the wampler mods (the IC tradeout) at a 9. It is truly a 9. Bet it goes to 9.5 with the rest of the mods. I am SO happy with this pedal now, I kicked another good pedal off my board (space limitations) as I see that this little box can really make a good amp/guitar great, and an already great one, just over the edge to REALLY great.

I recommend this pedal with the mod to ANYONE! Completely safe it will work out for you.

Very easy to use. Sliders make it easy to visualize your setup. Bought it used so no manual, but you don't need it.

Sound Quality : 9
Great! I use it for a specific setup. I have a Boss LS-2 with a clean effects loop and an overdrive effects loop. The clean effects loop has the LS-2 level at about 12:00. This loop has a chorus and delay pedal. The overdrive loop has the LS-2 level cranked all the way (+20db), and includes the GE-7 and a boss DS-2. The GE-7 has all the sliders cranked with a few exceptions for tone shaping. This setup is awesome!! The key to it is the amp. I use a '68 twin reverb, the 100 watt monster with no master volume. Its very hard to overdrive this amp at low volumes but this setup will do it perfect. You don't really need the DS-2 because the gain from the GE-7 and the LS-2 is more than enough to overdrive the preamp and get real nice distortion. With my strat it gets a nice SRV sound, with my Les Paul junior (with an EMG-81) it cranks out like a zakk wylde style marshall. This pedal kicks ass! One note though...it does hum a little...but really only when i put my amp volume over about 5....at that volume though its extremely loud and only good for large venues. On average for a show i'll put it on 3 or 4.

Reliability : 10

It's an EQ. If you don't know what it does, you'll learn quickly.

Fender Mustang, MXR M108, Boss TU-2, Boss DS-2, Boss GE-7, Boss CE-7. I use the both EQ's to fine tune the distortion. I prefer the M108 at the front because it has and input gain, ten band eq, and output level. Mainly it's the input gain that I like, if the Boss had one I might have two of them instead of the MXR (I've been a Boss fiend). It's fine, it works, and I haven't noticed any bad noise coming from it, but it's not the best.

Reliability : 10
Never had any problems with any Boss pedal ever since the beginning of my music through its whole duration. Except the input and output jacks have come loose. I just tightened them and they stayed there. The thumbscrew also sometimes loosens. Just snug them good and if you think of it, check them once in a while.

Where are the Boss manuals on the internet?

Overall Rating : 9
I saw on the internet that Dave Gilmour uses this pedal. Four of them. Good enough for me. I do prefer the MXR, however. I don't know if I'd replace this pedal if it came up missing. I rely on this pedal at this point to fine tune my distortion, and so I'm gonna hang on to it as long as I can.

Great sound quality, not noisey.

I use this pedal as a booster for my other pedals, and small valve amp. My guitars are MiM Strat with Kinman noiseless pickups, a '90 Les Paul Standard. I have other guitars, but these can cover every sound I use.

Set-up:

Gibson LP => Boss GE-7 => Boos SD-1 => Boss DS-1 => Marshall JH-1 Jackhammer => Boss CE-2 Chorus => Digitech Digital Delay => Digitech Digital Reverb => 8W '62 Brit Valve amp. (Scala)

This unit is what I have been looking for, for 10 years. It can boost the input to your favourate OD/DS pedal. This can really make a difference to the sound you acheive. My Boos SD-1 really thinkens up when the input is boosted.

This is a great clean pre-amp, with a 7 band graphic thrown in.

I play Rock, Blues, Hardrock, and a bit of Jazz. If this were lost or stolen I would get another or try a MXR graphic eq pedal. Either way I would get another eq pedal, I'm sold on these things for LIFE !!

You can use this to shape your guitar pickups response. Need more gain from your strat single coils ?? Use the GE-7 flat and tweek the gain control. You can also 'cut' with the gain control and the eq sliders. This thing is good all the way home.

Dave Gilmore out of Pink Floyd uses 2 of these in his live setup. This can only mean one thing, these babies must be very good or he would get another type. He is a very rich dude afterall.

Self explanatory really. 7 bands to tweak the eq of a guitar, plus a level to boost the overall volume. Like any eq, one needs to mess with it to get the desired sound, to each their own.

Sound Quality : 10
OK, here's my latest set up: I currently play a Gibson Les Paul through a Marshall 5212 amp. For effects I run a Digitech RP 100A (I'm going to get a Boss multi effects board later, saving my pennies), Boss GE-7, Boss CS-2 compressor, & a Boss AC-2 acoustic simulator. Needless to say, I get a very thick sound, but it's not "plastic" sounding, very true & real. The GE-7 really tweaks my sound, especially during solos, it gets it out front over everyone else. I can boost the level, have my mids boosted a bit, then ta da! instant "big" sound. Let me put it this way: When I engage this pedal, everyone knows it!

Reliability : 10
This question is a joke with Boss pedals, seriously! They should have an "11" to rate Boss in this area!

Very easy to use. Just touch any slider and you get the most amazing hiss.

Sound Quality : 3
I have tested the ge-7 with various guitars and various amps, with no other effects in the line. It hisses so bad that it's not useable for me. It is not true, that the eq only boosts a hissing that is already there. It produces the noise all by its own. You can turn the volume pot of your guitar to zero. Then cou raise OR CUT ANY frequency, and the hissing starts. The volume of the noise is rather extreme and quite independent of the setting of the output slider.

I am amazed, that some people seem not to hear this hissing. Either they have lost their hearing capabilities through excessive death metal sessions, or Boss produces half of the items hissing and the other half ok, or maybe the hissing is more pronounced by some amps than by others. (For me, it was more extreme through a Roland Jazz Chorus than through a Fender Blues Junior.)

What you can hear through the hiss, sounds good though. Tone shaping can be done very nicely, and I wish I could have used this pedal.

Brought it back to the store after 1 day. But it looks reliable - I'm sure it would hiss on for years.

I've been playing guitar for 20 years. Rock, Funk, Blues, Jazz. If you can stand a lot of noise or if you plan on using the eq only in certain situations where noise is not much of a problem (like solos or parts with a lot of distortion in live gigs), the tone shaping it offers can be very inspiring. If you plan to improve your clean sound and use it for more subtle parts (like I did), forget it. The effect is very nice, but the hiss is intolerable.

Sound Quality : 6
Its pretty good. It is mostly "transparent."

I have a PTP Metroamp 50 watt plexi board installed in an old Laney 30 watt head. No effects loop, so all effects are in front of the amp.

I have found that the GE-7 adds some noise to my signal (obviously, especially when it is boosting the signal), and especially when using in front of a high gain pedal. I determined that the level of noise is unacceptable. I have ordered the tone-jam.com "Sniper" kit for this thing and hopefully it will reduce the level of noise added to my signal.

Bottom line, its not studio quality. But it is good enough for the gig. I just can't use it in front of a distortion box.

Bottom line, is that EQ is almost an essential "effect." It is one of the most important parts of your signal (I guess unless you are a "no effects" guy, guitar straight to amp). Most people do not know this, go out and buy a pedal and may be dissatisfied with it. Unless you have an EQ pedal, you are taking a gamble that the proper frequencies are not being emphasized. It will just be by chance if everything works out.

Before you purchase another pedal, I'd say if you don't have an EQ pedal, get one. It really can turn a effect which sounds ho-hum into a delicious sound.

These are pretty good and cheap used, but mine makes a bit too much noise (I guess that's why they make the noise suppressor pedal...).

Adjustment is completely intuitive. If you can?t figure this one out, you really are in trouble.

Sound Quality : 9
If you really want to judge sound quality you need to use a good set of headphones. In doing so, I found the unit to be very silent both when off and when. The sliding of the faders is silent as well. There are those who say that they experience hiss with this product, but I would guess that this is limited to particular units and not to the design itself. Obviously, the unit will hiss if you input a signal with white noise of a given spectrum and then amplify that frequency band. Therefore, what equipment you use and where you place the unit are crucial (I put mine in the effects loop between the preamp and amp). My setup is as follows:

Gibson SG->Marshall AVT50 (tube preamp section)->Boss GE7->Boss CE5->
Boss CF3->Boss DD-6->Marshall AVT50 (amp section)

I use Monster cables for going in and out of my amp effects loop for maximum shielding against noise interference (yes, they really do make a huge difference). Specifically, I use the Jazz cables, which offer slightly better feedback protection than the Rock cables.

Reliability : No Opinion
The only reason I say N/A is because I have not had it long enough to judge how well the faders hold up. That is, I don?t know if the faders will eventually sound scratchy when moved. Like all Boss pedals, the product seems to be very well built.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I never dealt with Boss on any issues.

Overall Rating : 10
I never usually rate anything this high, but the GE-7 solved a problem that I was having and unexpectedly gave me more than I anticipated.

I bought this product because I wanted to alter the tone of the overdrive channel of my Marshall beyond the EQ controls that they provide. I tried various effects boxes: Ibanez TS-7 (ultra noisy), all the Boss overdrive/distortion boxes (also rather noisy), and lastly the well-known Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer (only slightly noisy). Judging the quality of sound in the store is very difficult for me and I thought I found the product with just the sound I was seeking. However, when I got home and tried it, I found that it sounded just like the overdrive built into my Marshall except that it hissed slightly. Why should I get a product that simulates a tube overdrive when I had the real thing? It finally occurred to me that what I really needed was to modify the tone/color of the sound that my preamp was producing rather than replace it. Thus I bought the GE-7 and it gave me exactly the sound that I was looking for. Additionally, it let me expand the capabilities of other effects by producing sounds that would not ordinarily be available with their built-in controls.

I play both blues and surf music(a rather odd combination), so I needed something to allow me to go from warm mellow tones to sharp twangy ones. Especially because I don't own either a Fender Jaguar or a Fender amp.

I should mention that others have indicated the fact that this is not a stereo product. But since it is the first box in my loop I only need mono, so it suits me just fine.

Bottom line: I highly recommend this product for a wide variety of musical applications.

Great for all music types. Been playing for twenty years. I think that you need some ability on the guitar to be able to really appreciate the subtle effect this has on your playing. I was a little concerned that this pedal would affect my tone but that fear is misguided. I would love to be able to plug straight into an amp without any pedals at all, unfortunately if you chug alot like me you need some eq. I use the Boss sd1 as a clean boost and this drives the amp into melt down. The GE7 adds the icing on the cake.

You can generate a good sound out of it easily if you are good with EQ, if not it will take some mucking around, no stored presets as with all of the simple single effect boss footswitches.

Overall, its fine.

Sound Quality : 9
To those who havn't bought this and are concerned with other reviews saying this is lots of hiss...:

This pedal doesn't generate hiss, your EQ work does. How it sounds is upto you, just as with any descent EQ. Its a sound engineering tool not a sound effect designed to make "your metalzone make all the cool death metal sounds!" lol. Although sure you can do that.

If you are using close to a V shape and you have your trebles boosted anywhere close to 15db, yes, of course you will get hiss. EQ is best used by cutting unnecessary frequencies rather than boosting them all, and where necessary boosting eqs within reason.

Its fine,

You can use it before your effects chain to alter the tone comming from your pickups, or use it to mold your overall tone, either in your effects loop or after distortion.

An EQ such as this is necessary for any performing guitarist, so that you can mold your tone. It's much more important than such modulation effects such as phaser, flanger etc.

OK here's the thing, i play epi lp>dunlop wah>boss md>>>>boss ch1>>>>boss tr2>>>boss dd6>> marshall mg100fx(??)>>>avt 4/12 cab.. not the best guitar/amp combo out there. without the pedal my distortion sounds weak and sloppy, plainly it sucks. well, its because i have a pretty low end marshall. BUT, with the pedal, it makes my sound SOOOO much more cleaner and crispier and heavier. the pedal really compensate for the sound that i wouldve gotten if i have a top model marshall or mesa. u have to really hear it to believe it, but in my own personal opinion, this pedal SHOULD be included in ur rig. some players use this pedal to make there sound stand out especially when soloing. but for now, since i don't have a $1500 tube head and an $900 cab, i use this pedal to make my sound cleaner w/ or w/o distortion, crispier and heavier. its a real must have, simply put.

Its an EQ, its not exactly rocket science. Just a bit of common sense and a smudge of knowledge about what an EQ actually does. Mine didn't have a manual.

Sound Quality : 8
I use this pedal to EQ my DS-1, the stock sound of the DS-1 was a bit.... bland, so I thought this lil box could help me to put a bit of life and sparkle into it. And it did :) I also use this to tweek the DS-1 for various situations, you'd be amazed how "metal" a DS-1 can sound with the right EQing :p

Although people are saying this pedal is noisy, mine doesn't seem to be any noisier than I would expect from an active EQ. I've used this with a variety of amps: Marshall JCM900 stack, Marshall JCM2000 stack, Peavey 5150 combo, Peavey Bandit 112 combo and a Laney thingymabob (cant remember the model), and in all situations, no more noise than expected, so I'm happy :)

Someone asked if it is analog earlier, yes it is, its a real active analog EQ, I took mine apart to have a look.

Mine doesn't bypass silently, it makes a wee click (very slight, but as Boss claim to have slient switching, I'm marking it down)

Reliability : 10
The previous owner had it for about 5-6 years, gigged with it loads, and it shows. But it still works fine, only a bit of scuffing on the paint work, even the white tops of the sliders are in place :) I've personally used Boss pedals for 4 years and never had any problems (except flat batteries, but thats fixed by my new flashy powersuppy).

Customer Support : 8

If it were lost or stolen, I'd probably get another, but I might look at something with a few more bands, its amazing how limited 7 feels when you're used to playing with a 31 band EQ in a PA (when I'm on sound guy duties).

I didn't compare it to other products, I thought "At half price, I may as well".

If your amp is in good condition, have no grounding problems where you're plugging in and use moderate settings then you won't have noise problems when using the GE-7. If your signal is particularly noisy before using the GE-7 then boosting certain frequencies will also highlight the noise present in that frequency range. For example if you're getting 60 cycle hum from improper grouding and you boost the 100hz fader then you will boost the 60 cycle hum along with the the rest of the signal.

Having said this there is a certain level of noise created by the unit itself. Up to 6 or 7db of boost is ok. Much past that and you might find the noise unacceptable. The Level fader is particularly noisy, boosting it much past 4-5 db will create unwanted noise. The trick then when using this pedal is to use it only to create relatively subtle changes to your sound. If you're looking to completelly change your sound I would suggest getting a new amp or guitar. Eq in general is used as a "sweetening" tool because drastic settings usually create unnatural sounds that sound Eq'd.

The frequencies offered by this pedal are pretty good. Great for adding low end! I like to boost the 100hz fader 5-6db with the amp turned up to 10. This makes the low end break up giving you a "blown speaker" sort of sound...very intense. The 6.4 fader is very good for cutting down on noise or smoothing the sound if it's a bit too harsh. The midrange frequencies are 800hz and 1.6k which in my opinion are not ideal. It would be nice to have control over 1k but it's close enough I guess.

Overall, if used in moderation this pedal can provide the subtle coloration needed to "perfect" your sound. Particularly great for playing live.

The type of music I play is Rock n' Roll/punk/indie I guess. But this pedal doesn't really apply to any particular style of music. You can make it work with whatever style you play. I don't like to use too many pedals. I have a Pro Co Rat that I use for leads and an EH Small Clone Chorus that I use for some clean stuff. I've had these in my setup for year now. I expect to use the GE-7 for a while. I think this pedal is a bit pricey for what it is. You can find rackmount eq's that can do much more for only slightly more money but of course they are not portable and don't let you control the overall output level which is the big advantage of the GE-7. Like any good pedal the GE-7 can be very inspiring. Hearing exactly the sound that you want simply makes you want to play...I already wrote a couple of good riffs using it so that's something.

First I had it directly from guitar to amp. Very Noisy. Jackson DKMG w/ EMG 85/81's into the front of a Peavey XXX head w/ Marshall cab. Way too noisy, a lot of "hiss". So I put it in the effects loop keep it on all the time and it's great. I have it in front of a Line 6 Modulation Modeler and Boss DD-3. If I turn the pedal off, my old tone sounds too muddy and I dont know how I lived without it.

This pedal is simple if you know what you want. You can cut or boost your bass, mids, and highs 15 db's. You don't need to check out the manual unless you really don't know what you are doing. There are 7 sliders for your bass, mids, and highs, and an 8th slider for volume control.

There are a ton of EQ pedals out, and Boss made one of the best ones out, the GE-7. An EQ pedal really is the key to creating your own tone or getting the sound of one of your favorite guitarists tone. I mainly use Les Pauls, and occasionally whip out my Gibson V, Custom Randy Roads V, a souped-up Strat or Telecaster, or my Ibanez JS1200 (with a custom chrome job) or my Ibanez Jem (the old 80's kind with the funky colors). I only use those guitars for special occasions, practicing, or recording. The JS1200 and the Jem are for the insane whammy sounds. I use my Les Pauls for all my shows while out on the road. I have a bunch of amps, I have all my distortions (from my heads) almost sounding exactly the same, and I use my GE-7 to clean up and provide more EQ options for my lead channels. I don't really use the GE-7 for my clean sound, but you can really get your clean channel to really shine when you use the EQ pedal. I don't get any hissing or unwanted noise out of my EQ, that's because I don't use it as a huge boost in volume for anything, and I bought a Boss NS-2 not too long ago, that pedal can do wonders! I've actually had the chance a few months ago to talk with many well known musicians, literally face-to-face with them. Most pro's use a noise suppressor, but usually it's a rack. I actually had the opportunity to talk with Malmsteen before, he uses two NS-2's, his old noise gate, it was some sort of noise gate that was in his rack, it broke, and his tech ran out and bought an NS-2 for him without telling him. He said it was incredible, Malmsteen was so amazed with how great the NS-2 worked. So, I thought, my rig is kind of noisy, ran out that same day and bought a NS-2. Boss's two best compact pedals, the GE-7 and the NS-2, trust me on that one.

Reliability : 10
Very reliable, I keep all my guitars, amps, and pedal looking like new and sounding like new. I've been using my GE-7 for years, ths pedal is amazing, can really enhance your lead channel or clean channel. I've owned a lot of Boss pedals, I've never had one die on me or break.

Boss is so good, that I've never even needed to contact them.

If your distortion pedal or your amp's distortion is not enough for you, or just too weak, or whatever the problem is, get the BOSS GE-7! This thing can take some crappy sounding amp and make it sound like it's worth something. If you don't believe me, go out and test this pedal out! An EQ pedal is almost a must for a real musician.

okay, here's the thing. i have a marshall mg50dfx and the distortion isn't that great. i've sold my boss metal zone and my digitech metal master because i thought it sounded too artificial. but with the ge-7 i'm satisfied. gives me crunch and bass that i didn't have before. it DOES produce noise (like no other--it's really bothersome) but it really is just boosting the background noise that's already there. i have an ns-2 (noise suppressor) and it ELIMINATES that. so i say, you 'gotta get both like as if it's a package. it's worth it.

very good. original i bought it to clean up my sound and throw it in front of the boss metal zone AKA the pedal from hell (i hate that damn thing) looking for a super metal tone. well i moved on from that and got good amp distortion and really didnt need it till recently.

with my rig when i would go to solo i wouldnt get the kick in the ass i needed. i read that slash uses one of these in his rig purely to boost his sound for soloing. so i remembered i had mine laying around and thought i'd give it a try. after some tweaking and finding what i wanted for the boosted solo tone (more treble and mids for bite) i fell in love with this thing. it really gets the job done for what i need it for. there's hardly any noise. infact the only time i get noise is if the contacts are dirty.

I use a jackson USA rhodes custom with emg 81 in the bridge, that goes into a digitech x series metal master(in my opinion the best distortion pedal on the market), then into the ge7, and then my amp, a fender cyber twin full stack. It's an incredible sound, almost exactly like a mesa boogie mark IV. I've read many people complain about noise from this unit, and it may be true, but i use an extreamly noisy distortion pedal and this thing almost completely eliminates the noise. If i turn the amp all the way up and give about thirty seconds of just sitting there i'll get feedback, but thats it. I've been able to make my rig sound like Slayer to Lamb of God, to Iron Maiden, and back in less than 30 seconds with this thing.

And just for pointers, If your into metal, check out the digitech metal master, it's much better than the mt2, and nothing against boss, but as far as distortion goes, I dont think anything but and engl powerball can beat the metal master. The ge7 is very good.

I bought this thing because i play clean sounds at loud volume. It really gets rid of the messy sound almost like a compressor. For distortion it works good too. It's made my tone more tight, HOWEVER, I did find it a little noisy. If you leave all the faders at the middle, you get the exact same sound of your set up. Once you move one of the faders, it starts to hiss a little. Even when you move the fader down! Weired. And I can agree with the other guy that it doesn't matter about the level of the unit, you can hear the hiss no matter what the volume settings are. But I'll have to say it does improve my tone.

This EQ effect unit is very easy to use. Gives you a wide range of tone possibilities.

Sound Quality : 7
Here's the problem I had with this unit (I say had because I decided to trade the unit after having it for a while). This unit is simply too noisy with my gear. I have a Traynor YCV40 (2 X 10) which is really a quiet tube amp. I have a strat with DiMarzio Heavy Blues and Vintage Blues pickups (no noise) and an Epiphone Sheraton II that I put Seymour Duncan JB and a 59 in (again, no noise). If I tried to boost the mids or the treble bands with this EQ pedal, I got hiss through my amp. I had the exact same experience James had below. I took the pedal back to the store I brought it from. We hooked up three differnt GE-7's through a Fender Twin they had. All three had the same hiss and white noise. I ended up trading for a TS-9. The store staff was surprised by this noise, but they certainly couldn't defend the units. The guy suggested a Noise Suppresor, but I wasn't too keen on spending more money on more pedals. I had purchased the GE-7 originally to see how it would be to boost the mids on my BD-2. So, the TS-9 is what I was after anyway. The GE-7 was good for scooping the mids, but I don't play too much heavy metal, so didn't need that. It was even noisy (but not too much) with my Martin DGE16 through a Genz Benz Shenandoah acoustic amp. After I noticed that, I was pretty convinced the noise is coming from the pedal.

Reliability : 9
It's a Boss, I think they are reliable. I have the BD-2 and the Compressor - CS-3. They have been very reliable.

NOTE: I'm answering my own review (just below) in this review.

Sound Quality : No Opinion
See my previous review. There is one more strange thing in relation to this problem I should have mentioned. Any band used will increase the noise, BUT you can raise or lower the output slider (+15db -15db) with NO EFFECT on the loudness of the hiss. Weird.

But now the rest of the story. I took the pedal down to the store I bought it at. I plugged it into a brand new Peavey (I think it was) Tube amp. It was MUCH quieter, but when I got the guy to really crank the amp (didn't dare touch a string at this volume) the noise was clearly there. The salesman looked up in surprise even. I showed him all the tricks that it was the same level his lowering or raising any band, etc. He took another one from the shelf, exactly the same!

I went up the street to another store (this one didn't have one) and bought a Boss NS-2 noise suppressor. Got it home, it helped but the hiss is so bad on my amp that even when I am playing I don't mask it completely and the suppressor lets the hiss through though it did help.

Sorry for the epic, but this is stuff I would really have liked to have known before buying the GE-7, so I figure maybe someone else will find this interesting.

Anyway, background...I bought my amp a while back, it always has had buzzes and noises, though I never heard THIS hiss/white noise tilk I got the pedal. The music store proved that the pedal does end up making self-noise but the thing that changes from amp to amp is the level of it. It is acceptable in a brand new amp that works okay, and with a noise suppressor it is even better. My amp has always had other noises though, and I was sure the volume pot on the clean channel was ready to go out, because it made terrible scratchy noises (but not alway at the same setting!) when I turned it up or down sometimes. Also made a LOUD pop when going into standby mode, but only now and then. I still loved the sound of the amp though.

So I changed out the preamp (12AX7A) tube (1 of 5...) that they use half of for the guitar input on the amp.

MAAAANNN...I just got myself a new amplifier! This thing is now MUCH quieter, no scratch sounds when I move the volume, and so far no popping when I go to standby. I think I can safely throw away the tube I took out.

And as for the GE-7...it still is making noise, but it is bearable, and with the suppressor it is pretty quiet in most bands. This particular noise now is a little higher in the higher bands...again I am not amplifying the noise, because it also is as loud with a cut in the HF areas.

But it is MUCH better. So my advice to anyone thinking about this pedal is, be aware, there IS noise from these pedals, but it may be okay. Check the store policy for returns, or bring your amp in to use to try out the pedal (drastic...yes, but in this one case maybe worth it). Higher volumes bring it out more.

Reliability : No Opinion
It's consistent in that it is a nice pedal but makes noise...also consistently.

Simple. I wish these reviews here had form that asked where you use the pedal. This becomes important, because THIS particular pedal react very differently when you are playing at low volumes, or maybe even direct into recording, and when you put it in a tube amp. Also depends on the volume.

Sound Quality : No Opinion
Here is the problem. I noted the discrepencies in the preceding posts about whether this pedal is noisy or not. I also considered that the people that thought it was noisy may not have realized they themselves were boosting the noise. I couldn't test the pedal out before buying, and now I know....all of you are probably correct. It IS noisy and in some setups is NOT noisy.

I won't go into all that I have run it through, because in troubleshooting I cut down everything so I had the simplest test to see why it was so noisy. I was using a Strat->GE-7->Carvin MTS3212 100/50w (switchable) tube amplifier.

When I got the pedal home, I liked it a lot. It held a lot of promise. But I was keeping the volume on the amplifier WAY down next to 1. I took it with me to a band practice, and there I heard the problem at "normal" levels (with my amp set to 50w setting, I had the volume at only around 3-4...but that is pretty loud with this amp). Terribly white noise coming from this thing. I stopped using it, and took it home. Played with it at home reducing the chain down to what I showed above, keeping it simple. Tried swapping out both guitar cables also (guitar->GE-7 and GE-7->amp) and no...not with each other :-).
The biggest clue to the problem was that the white noise showed up, AND at the same apparent levels, whether I raised OR cut a frequency. Unlike what someone else here posted, I found that when I turned the pedal on if all the bands were set to 0, it was still quiet. BUT, when I raised or lowered ANY band there was white noise. If I raised or lowerd say 100hz, it had a more bassy (for a high freq) sound, if I raised or lowered 800 it had a different quality but seemed just as loud.

The level of this noise made the pedal unusable for me. I tried running it in the effects loop of the amp, and it improved some. I don't know if this is strictly the pedals fault...at some point I unplugged the guitar from the input and also tried with teh guitar plugged in but the pickup set to 0. Same thing in all cases.

I am taking the box back to see if this happens with other amps. I won't go on record as saying the pedal is necessarily bad, but it has to be either the pedal, or the amp or the combination of the two.

As some helpful folk here have mentioned, I may try the option of buying yet another pedal, the NS-2 noise suppresor and if that doesn't suck tone too much, I may go with that combo to fix the problem. I considered waiting until I found out before writing this, but I can add a short synopsis later about what I found out. The point is this pedal CAN seemingly be noisy, so if I were you I would test it at the store, AT the volume you plan on using it, and with the same or similar equipment as you play through.

I have no opinion abouit the sound quality yet because the hiss is a deal breaker...but what I could hear over the hiss did sound pretty nice. I want to be able to keep this pedal. Either I find out that I just got a defective one, or that a suppressor makes it all worth it.

Reliability : 10
I trust Boss pedals so far. If I can solve this hiss problem, I will probably buy two pedals, one for into the amp, the other in the effects loop along with a delay box.

Personally, I found the GE-7 quite easy to use. You plug your guitar in one side, plug a cord from the other side to your amp, fiddle with the sliders, and you're ready to go. Very intuitive. I would recommend jotting down your preferred settings in case the sliders are accidentally moved.

Sound Quality : 10
I used my GE-7 running into a 1973 Fender Bassman head through two 12's. The Bassman has the most primitive tone-shaping possibilities I know of (a bass control, and a treble control- that's it). The GE-7 allows amazing tone control with virtually no added noise. Really a great aid in any setup. The really great thing with the GE-7 is that it can be used as a pre-amp. By boosting my input signal (turning up the output slider on the GE-7), I am able to get a subtle, easily controlled front-end distortion. It gives my guitar a commanding, ballsy tone that inspires me as a lead player. It really cuts through.

Reliability : 10
I bout my pedal used & have never had a single problem with it. It is my main pedal- it is on all night, every night I play out. The one I have is a tank.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never dealt with Boss or Roland. These pedals are so reasonably priced that if I ever had a problem with it, I'd just buy another used one on-line.

Overall Rating : 10
I play rock & oldies. I've played guitar for 39 years. Currently I am between bands. I've read that David Gilmour (at least at one time) split his guitar signal into 4 or 5 different paths, running through different effects configurations, and he used a GE-7 in every path. The tone-shaping ability, coupled with the pre-amp function and the reliability of the pedal make it a great tool.

Getting the sound you want might take you a while just because you need some time to figure out what each band does to your sound, but this is normal for an equalizer pedal. When i had just bought it I just screwed around with it for a while, just to see what each band did to my sound. THis is a perfect way to figure out how this thing works. There's no need to check the manual because it's a pretty obvious pedal.

Sound Quality : 8
First of all: If you want to use this pedal to shape your distorted sound it is necessary that you put it behind your distortion unit!! (i use my amp for distortion so i use it in my fx loop) I've read some reviews of people who said that this is a noisy pedal but i never had a problem with this. I have the idea people are just saying this because some guy who mods pedals says that it's a shitty pedal unless you let him mod it.

I use my GE7 with an epiphone les paul custom into a randall RG75 combo (solid state). I bought this pedal to accurately shape my sound and it does the job perfectly. I play mainly metal, think of Slayer, Vader, Megadeth... I managed to clone their sound very accurately with my little GE7.

This extremely effective little box is a must have for any guitarist. If i ever lose this pedal i'd buy a new one right away. I was also thinking about getting the MXR 10 band eq but i decided to go for the Boss GE-7 because they're so reliable. This pedal was the best purchase i've done in a long time... it is always on when i'm playing guitar! I can't do without it!

I play this with a les paul custom and a shitload of other pedals. I run the pedal last to regain any tone i might have lost with the 15 pedals i have. When you play it with distortion it sounds really really bassy so i find i dont use it with distortion at all. it is a very powerfull effect, like taking a blanket off your amp when on the clean channel. fwhen its off, it feels like the volume knob on my guitar is barely turned on. it really boosts everything, including prescense.

i read alot about noise, and i was edgy about buying this pedal cuz of it, cuz i HATE noise, but after i plugged it in i found no noise at all. Of course by this i mena that the GE-7 PRODUCED NO NOISE ITSELF. however of course if you boost the level knob up to likr 75% you start hearing some noise, but thats just noisde already there. and i couldnt possibly imagine why you would want that kind of a volume increase in the middle of a song... so just use the level knob to compensate for whatever frequencies you cut or boost so that it averages out well witht he song. in this sense, there is no noise, and i get exactly the sound i want. its really fantastic. fattens my sound perfectly with no degredation. could do much more for you. i just wanted a fatter sound with distortion. works great.

Pretty easy to get a good sound, just get tweeking.

My setup is Ibanez RG370 -> Boss PW-10 -> Boss MT-2 -> Boss GE-7.

It can greatly improve your sound. My metal zone sounds quiet harsh and fuzzy but with the GE-7 after it and a good bit of tweeking you can get the perfect sound. I cant lay without it now, when i do i feel theres something missing. I play mostly metal and this does the job perfect. Im not one of those new metal people that cut mids, i set it to boost bass level low mids boost high mids and level treble.
One problem is that if you boost too much it can get quiet noisey

It takes some time to figure out how to set this up, but here's a hint. Put all the slides in the middle and see how each slide affects your tone. If you know where you want to go with your sound and you know what every slide does, it's a piece of cake.

The manual does not say anything useful about how to set this pedal up, but gives you the basic info about it.

Sound Quality : 9
My set-up is as follows: Ibanez RG 570 EX > Boss DS-1 > Boss GE-7 > Marshall AVT 50 with a Korg AX100G in the FX Loop.

I'm not very much into that 'V-shaped' metal sound. I rather set it up as a 'W' with the 100@6, 200@-2, 400@3, 800@10, 1.6k@3, 3.2k@-3 and 6.4k@6. With this setting I can get a nice and bright distortion with a great punch. The DS-1 has it's tone at 1 o'clock and dist at 3 o'clock.

If you boost up the level on the GE-7 you actually can get noise, but that's because of the background-noise it is amplifying instead of the pedal itself.

So far for the distortion... if you want to play it clean, you can add more depth with this pedal. Sounds great, but the effect is far less than with a distortion.

Reliability : 10
This thing would survive a nuclear blast, solid as a rock. Speakwise, you must feed it with a nuclear powerplant... Use an adaptor or rechargeable battery. Otherwise you'll be spending half of your wage on batteries... so to speak.

Never dealt with them.

Overall Rating : 9
The styles I like to play are things like Punk/Emo/Indie-rock... bands like A Static Lullaby, Finch, Story of the Year and Thrice. It's not that I exactly want to copy these sounds, but it gets really close to this.

It does not add noise to my set-up (but it logically amplifies the background noise if you crank up the level) so I'm very pleased with this.

One thing what can be improved is the manual. Perhaps a few suggestions about the settings would be nice and helps you understand how to set up an EQ.

For the rest... It does what it has to do; shape your sound the way you want. And it does its job very well.

I don't know what all this talk is about noise?????

mine is just brilliant! no noise, hiss, buzz nothing!

Maybe those who are having difficulty in some noise should invest in some good leads! I mean even just a lead can effect your overall tone! Try it out in a shop one day, try out a $40 lead then try out a $100 lead and immediately you'll hear a difference!

My setup: Ibanez 520qs fitted with Dimarzio Evolution and Breed pickups, Mesa Boogie Triaxis, Mesa Boogie Silum 2:90, Mesa Boogie Traditional Rectifier 4 X 12 Cab, Digitech DHP-33, TC Electronic Gmajor, Boss GE-7,Boss DS-1, Boss BD-2, Ibanez TS-9, Rockman Acoustic Pedal, Crybaby Wah, Behringer FCB1010 foot controller.

EQ's are all hard to use. Most people don't know how to get the best out of them. It takes time to learn how each frequency will affect the tone.

I'm giving it a 10 cuz it's no easier or harder to adjust than any other.

Sound Quality : 7
I have a Japanese Ibanez RG going through a 5150 and these EQ's work wonders in the FX loop of any tube amp. A lot of the time an amps' 3 band EQ just isn't enough. You can get a good tone, but like on my 5150, I HAVE to boost the 100's and cut the 200's to keep the bass from muddying up and dominating everything. This way you get defined power, and it's not something you'd be able to do any other way.

Also, try cutting the bass frequencies in front of the amp, then using another EQ to boost the bass after the amp. Works like a charm!

Unfortunately the pedal hisses pretty bad when you boost anything over 1/4. You pretty much have to use it as a frequency cutter. Boost the frequencies you want to boost, then move everything down to below the line level point. Then, if you really need too, boost the master level slider a tad. But otherwise it's no big deal.

7 for noise.

Reliability : 10
The only thing I dislike about it is those little white knobs on the sliders like to pop off. Other than that, it's bulletproof.

Customer Support : 6
Never talked to 'em. I'll give them a 6 for being impossible to get in touch with.

It's great, just as useful as any other EQ, although the outdated noisy components hold it back. It's a 25 year old design, and $3 in parts will quiet up most of the noise. No way this thing should really cost $90... but EQ's tend to be expensive anyway...

Sound Quality : 10
I have yet to buy this.I have several freinds in the area's top notch bands that use this edal and they all swear by it.I just recently tried a DOD through my Marshall SL-X.And whoa!!!!With the right setting it was like the same amp but bigger.Power chords rangout, leads jumped out of the cab like never befor. And with the leval slider boosted a few and the amp(50W)on 4 1/2 I could get long sustainy stretchs to slowly breakup into perfect controled feedback.I ran mine infront of the amp not through the loop. The DOD I tried had the typical DOD switch problem so I plan on getting the Boss in a few days.As for the guy that said don't boost only cut to avoid feedback,I just don't know what to say.Thats about like saying don't stretch your strings on a lead cause they might break. On a typical professionaly run 31 band PA EQ you should have an S curve. The mids are were your vocals, guitar, snare are.The same goes for guitar. The V shaped EQ will giveyou big power chords and crunchy distortion but your leads won't CUT.Running all slider below 0 will basically cut your tone, totaly stupid,I'm not saying that ou want to boost a freguency to MAX but certain frequencys will ned to be boost some cut.If you get uncontroled feedback find the problem slider and cut it a hair. But to run under 0 cause your afraid of feedback or hiss is defeating the purpose.

hey it's me again I just want to add that for the trick i gave out, unless you're using it as a subwoofer, you'll need an extra radioshack adapter (stereo to mono for headphones, they'll know what you mean) that you plug in before the other one. okay, it's an extra 3 bucks, but it's still worth it. i forgot to mention it cuz it's barely audible difference as a sub. if you dont use this extra adapter for using it as a speaker tho, you'll be losing some channels because the boss pedals are mono and wont take all the stereo channels.

Sound Quality : 9
I use it after my distortion pedal (rat), and it works very well taking away the harsh and fizzy sound of the rat. I dropped the 6.4k, raised all the bass/mid(<5) and treble(abt 5). Strong, powerful, face punching, crunchy is how I can describe the sound. I feel I can almost replicate tones from any covers with this eq. It does hiss a tiny little bit as I boosted the frequencies.

It's pretty easy to tweak this, but the sliders have a greater effect when put in a serial fx-loop instead of a parallel (50% wet).
Also, the effect is more noticable when used in front of your amp.

Mine didn't came with a manual, but I got one for free from Roland Belgium.
Just put all sliders on '0', and boost and cut them 1 by 1, so you'll learn the effect of the various frequencies on your tone.

Sound Quality : 8
Ibanez S540 FM TTS (or Fender Strat '68 RI CIJ w/ US Texas Specials) into Vox V847 wah (TB'ed)-->Boss CS-2 Compressor-->Dod 250 Overdrive-->Hughes and Kettner Tubefactor--->MXR 6 band EQ (blue)-->Engl Savage 60.
fx loop=Boss GE-7---Boss CE-2 Chorus--->Dod FX96 Analog Delay (soon to be replaced with Boss DM-2)--->Ibanez DE7 Delay Echo

Right now I use it in the fx-loop of my Engl Savage 60 tube amp, for a lead-boost. Or for a little 6,4kHz boost after my compression (because my Boss CS-2 tends to dull the sound a little. And the 6,4kHz reinforces the spikey attack, that's so great for funk and rock n' roll licks).

When all faders set to '0', I can still hear a difference in sound when clicked on and off. This should not be possible. When boosting stuff (even a little, I use EQ-ing with care), the thing does get a bit hissy. But apart from these minor issues, the pro's of the unit outweigh the cons easilly. It's a very sturdy tone-control unit.

Together with my H&K Tubefactor and Boss CS-2 Compressor, I can get a myriad of tones, when playing with the GE-7. But since a guitar relies on mids (guitar's fundamentals range from 82Hz-low E to 1174Hz-22th fret D), I'm catious with doing that V-shaped EQ stuff that most inexperienced metalheads use (eventhough I do a lot of metal myself.)

So 2 points deduct for the slight hissyness and slight coloration at '0'. (Make this unit true bypass, add some extra freq-bands, and you'll have a winner. Mr. Dunlop, are ya listenin'? ;-) )

Reliability : 9
It's a Boss. I checked my serialnumber with Roland Belgium, and according to them, mine is from '89-'90. Apart from a few minor scratches it looks almost new. And it'll keep on goin'.
But eventhough everyone always applaudes Boss with phrases like "It'll survive a nuclear war", I feel that my MXR-styled DOD pedals (250 & 280) and my MXR 6 band EQ (blue version) are even MORE heavy duty. Especially the MXR EQ's PCB has such a nice & tight lay-out. Everything neatly ordered and nothing to bend or break.

I'm not saying the Boss is bad, hell no! I'm just saying that the older MXR stuff is even more reliable.

Customer Support : 9
Well, Roland Belgium have provided me with 3 free manuals already, so yeah, I like 'em.

I'd only wish Boss would be smart enough (just like Dod with their 250 overdrive and Ibanez with their TS9) to re-issue their best pedals. Because almost EVERY NEW Boss pedal will sound worse than it's predecessor! (CS-3 vs. CS-2, CH-1 vs. CE-3 vs. CE-2... etc.)

Overall Rating : 9
I play in a heavy/thrash metal band, but also in a funk/soul/disco coverband. And I'm also noodling a bit with surf, blues and classic rock (Dick Dale, Shadows, Gary Moore, SRV, Eagles, Deep Purple, Rainbow, etc.) I've been playing for 10 years now, and I used to have various multi-fx (Zoom 2020, Zoom 3000S, Digitech RP5, Boss GT-3), but I got some complaints about my tone being thinnish and un-organic. I began listening very carefully to any negative side-effects,, and ditched the GT-3. Then back to analog stompboxes (save the DE7). I also upgraded my patch-cables from Hosa to George L (and Tasker+Neutrik self soldered) and my guitar cables to Taskers in the fx-loop, and a Monster Rock between amp and guitar.
The Dod 250 will be made true bypass, and I might replace the CS-2 with a Keeley comp in the (nearby) future.
Yeah, I've become pretty damn tone-frenzy, but I study at the SAE, so my ears tend to hear things more different (and sometimes better) than most people.

If it were stolen, I'd track one down 2nd handed (like this one) or maybe I'd try the MXR 10 band EQ (re-issue with switch).
I love its tone-shaping powers and compact and sturdy casing. The bypass could be improved though. But replacing a FET bypass (like Boss pedals have) with a true bypass, is very hard and costly.

I wouldn't consider the Dod FX40 and Danelectro EQ, because of their flimsy switches and parts.

It helps me making music, it's a powerful tool for several things.
Also very great for that AM-radio sound (check out the intro's of "I believe in a thing called love"-The Darkness and "Ghosts of war"-Slayer).

Not hard to use, but getting a sound you'll like can take a little while.

Sound Quality : 9
I've been playing for two years with my MD-2 which is horrible. But after buying
this, I was finally able to get an acceptable sound. This thing rocks. I've used
it with an MT-2 also, with great results. The only real problem is the noise
I get when boosting Mids. But I get none with a scooped setting, as the High and low
sliders don't seem to make any noise at all. Besides that, this thing is now
essential to me. I feel I can turn my sound into anything with it. I've even been
able to emulate all those weird sounds from different bands (like Strung Out's
Mephisto; the part where the guitar breaks and sounds more middle-ish). I can't
play guitar without this now. I don't know about other EQs, but this one works
great. The effect is more pronounced after a distortion pedal, but it can give
me a clean sound I love also. It doesn't do much going into an amp's overdrive,
but after any kind of distortion it's great.

My favorite setting is a 'w'. It's actually pretty much a 'V' but with the middle
slider boosted slightly over its two neighbouring ones (about +5 from them).
The two leftest sliders seem to control bass while the rightest one controls
the really metal-y usable treble. By the way, if you do want to get a metal
tone, don't do like me and assume the two rightest sliders will control treble
like the two left do for bass; that 6th slider can really mean the difference between
a rock tone and a metal tone if you tweak it right.

Reliability : 8
The white caps come off pretty easily, but the rest is great.

I can't play without this thing. I have an ESP LTD EC-100 going through an MD2,
this and my friend's Peavey bass amp and it turns almost everything that sounded
crappy about my setup into something at least acceptable. My MD-2 still can't give
me the leads I'd like (even though they're better), but I now have a very
heavy and playable rythm. A must-have, especially if your amp's EQ is weak or if
your dist pedal has no mid control.

---------------------------------
A neat trick:
---------------------------------
You can actually use this little thing to turn your amp into a third speaker
or even subwoofer when using your CD-ROM to play CDs. The only extra thing
you'll need is a small adapter/converter (headphone jack to patch cord or
vice versa, just buy both to be sure) that you can find at Walmart or Radioshack
for 3 bucks or so. When you do get it, just plug it into the headphone jack in front
of your CD-ROM player and plug the patch cord into that adapter, leading to your
GE-7. You can then add whatever other pedals you'd like (with some possibly hilarious results) and
patch cord it all into your amp as usual. Then boot up your computer in Windows,
and use your CD-ROM drive buttons to play a CD (not the Windows CD player). Windows
should send the music to your normal speakers, and the CDROM will send its output
to your GE-7 and amp. Then, tune your pedals as you wish. Congratulations! You just
got a new speaker for free.

i.e. I run the CD output through my MD-2 (dist knobs both far left, treble high and
bass used to control the main bass level) then through my GE-7 (use the
three leftest controls to control bass level definition, put them higher than
everything else) and then into my friend's Peavey Microbass amp (Low=full, Mid=
middle, High=middle). The MD-2 gives a huge bass boost (only thing it's good for)
and the GE-7 is used to define the sound and get rid of the CD-ROM's crummy output
as well as add bass. Now I have a free subwoofer. Take that, Logitech!

I was trying to achieve a gritty metal tone without the overwhelming feedback or artificial high note tones that most distortion pedals seem to give off. I tried the Boss metal zone which gave a good high range distortion but, lacked warmth and had very high frequncy resulting in making solos and lead guitar notes sound unclear. I also tried the Digitech Metal Master which was a step up from the Metal zone in terms of having a better rounded distortion that sounded as good as any unit I came across but, had a similar issue as the metal zone of giving off unclear sounds when playing lead guitar or solos. It seemed my amps distortion was clear enough to provide good lead guitar sounds however, this is a cheap Peavey Rage whos distortion lacks a powerfull enough presence that is necessary to achieve a heavy metal or Nu metal sound. therefore, It then occured to me to find a device that can boost my amps distortion and preserve its clarity which is how this GE-7 unit came into the mix. Once I got this unit and did the proper tweaking, I felt relieved that I was finally able to get the sound I wanted. I was able to achieve a high thrusting distortion with out losing my guitars tone and this result gave me the ability to sound very similar to most metal and hard rock bands such as Metallica, Black Sabbath, AC DC, Zeppelin. I'm looking forward to using the GE-7 with a higher quality amp as I'm sure it will give off a better sound then what I'm using now.

I think the GE-7 is the answer to any sound issues a person is trying to achieve. As far as Im concerned this thing can be tweaked to achieve any type of musical style but, of course it would have to be used in conjuction with an effect feature present in a pedal or an amp. the GE-7 does whats its supposed to do which is to smooth out a tone and give a greater presence. It does take some tweaking to get a desired sound but, once that sound is obtained, then the quality of the GE-7 value is highly appreciated

The eq sounded great, it really does the job it's supposed to do. However, it doesn't suit my needs. I bought it to see if it could either clear up a couple of problems that i had with my pickups in the clean channel, and actually it did, however, i think i better spend the money on the pickup than i'm missing. On the other hand, with the distortion, i guess you really cannot make the emg-randall configuration any heavier. On the other hand, when i tried it trough my friends amp, it did it for him, great tone and stuff, though he's broke so he can't buy it :(. So i decided that i would just so let this guy go. By the way my gear is an Ibanez S series with dual actives emgs and a disconnected stock single coil [still looking for a pristine clean active single coil that someone may wanna sell :)]. I'm running the guitar through my Randall Rh200 >>crybaby 535q>> and the ge-7>> to the guitar. If you are interested in buying a used ge 7 for $50 shipping included mail me.

I play heavy metal, some blues and some classic rock, and i guess i'm happy with the setup i have. The ge 7 does the job and i recomend it to anybody looking to improve or alter their sound. It works, i tell u from the big impression i got when i saw it working under different conditions. However, in my case it didn't do it. If anyone is interested un buying one mail me up!

7 sliders, 1 extra for volume. Pretty easy.

Sound Quality : 9
I run this through a Schecter C-1 Classic and a Crate MX-65. The pedal can get a bit noisy if you crank it up, specifically the treble side, but it's nothing a noise gate can't handle.
Played clean, the EQ isn't quite as strong as it is through distortion, but it is still noticable. I use both amp EQ and pedal EQ for clean, but only pedal EQ for distortion. My amp doesn't have a middle knob, so I bought the pedal to make up for it. If you don't want to be like every other guitarist out there, please, PLEASE don't make the EQ sliders into a "V" shape. Boost the mids! That's what they're there for! When playing leads, it's the mids that gives most definition. If you're not going to boost the mids, don't buy this pedal.

It's a Boss. Mine has been run over, and they replaced it.

EQ pedals are useful when you've got a ear for tone, and you can listen to your playing or someone elses (always easier when it's not your sound) and pick out problems like - not enough bass, too many low mids, feedback caused by boosting 3k and above - that sort of thing. If that's you, get one.

Sound Quality : 8
I don't own one of these (yet!), but I've used them and they are essential for getting a decent, clear tone. It's always important to note that the more gain you use, the more the overall tone is compromised and the harder it becomes to balance out and control the sound, even with one of these.

There isn't much point me listing a specific EQ setting as some others have done because how something sounds is based on acoustics of the room, volume of the signal, how many and what type of instruments you are playing with, what guitar(s) you use, what amp... lots of variables, which means what works for one guy, or what works in one place might not work so well in another.

I own a Dano EQ that is almost identical to this, at least it was until it decided to break. That's why I'm getting one. I'll give it an 8 cos I know they're good, but I can't say how noisy it'll be with my rig.

My personal recommedations are to try and level match the volume of the sound with the EQ on or off (some cheaper pedals like mine add noise when you raise the level, so this might not work in all cases). I know some people have said never boost always cut - but I do a combination of both. If I just cut, I'd never get the right tone. I personally think these work best after a OD/Distortion/Fuzz box, or at the end of the chain.

Reliability : 10
Come on, we're talking BOSS here. I've had enough of their products (MT-2, OD-2, CH-1, PH-2, GT-3, GT-6) to know they're pretty much the best you can get.

Plug it in, adjust sliders. It's not rocket science. Yeah, you get a manual which essentially says plug guitar in here, move the slider up/down to boost/cut a frequency range. What more could it say??

Sound Quality : 9
I've had the pedal for about 4 years, but never really used it until recently. The placement is all important.

Most amps have a 3 band EQ, Bass, Mid, Treble. I play with a very scooped mid sound, with the bass and treble up fairly high, didn't get too bad a sound out of it before. I've now got the GE-7 in the FX loop of the amp (running in serial so 100% of the signal is passed through the loop), with the mids turned up about 1/2 way. With the added 7 bands of EQ you've got so much more control over which of the mid frequencies you cut. It's added so much control over the sound that if you know roughly what you're doing you can get an improvement.

Running it in front of your amp will give a more subtle effect. Essentially this allows you to change the level and frequencies of the signal that is passed into the amp, giving control in a similar way to adjusting the volume and tone controls of your guitar. Useful for boosting the signal form low-output pickups, or changing the pickup's sound.

The pedal itself has a little bit of noise, especially if you use it to boost levels (but not a gret deal, and nothign a good noise gate can't handle)). One way of combating this is by not boosting any frequencies (I think there's another review in this list that says a simialr thing). If you treat the pedal as having a maximum of 0 (and not +15) and just cut everything around this (you can use the volume slider to boost teh overall level a touch, or just buy a louder amp) :) then it's pretty quiet.

In the FX loop of an amp, it adds a lot more control to your sound, and can make a big improvement if it's set right.

Reliability : 10
It's a boss.

Overall, it's now an essential pedal. I would hate to go back to using the amp without it.

pisa piss. 7 sliders controling the volume of each freq. (or area of tone to me and you) and another slider for volume. easy... then again if this is your first pedal and you have no clue about guitar it wont be. only problem is tracking the *exact* sound you want. just takes practise. cant be botherd to read the manuel, it's wafer thin anyway

Sound Quality : 9
i use:

epiphone sg 400 > boss cs-3 compressor/sustainer > digitech x-series hot rod > boss ge-7 graphic eq > korg ax100g > marshall mg100dfx

tis good - once you know what you want. mr. slash uses it for feedback, so he probably adds treble, some people make a decent rhythm tone (metal bands have scooped mids or hightned bass or what ever) good for blues too. i think it's great. works as a feeedback reducer if you put the sliders below 0 (it goes down to -15) only problem is this can reduce volume a little

Reliability : 10

I play noisy punk, indie, bit of metal, jazz and shred. works for me. i like it, problems are specified in my review but they don't amount to much. this pedal dosn't do *too* much for the clean rhythm (i.e works well with distortion) which is a bummer. so... 9

Quite easy, Helps to have a bit of knowledge as far as how EQ works, No hidden tricks does what it is told :)the manual is a bit dogdy it does not explain what each band does! so far as i could see, luckly i knew how EQ worked so i did not have a problem.

Sounds great works really well. I have this pedal in my guitars FXLOOP, I use it mainly as a solo boost with my wha pedal, i play mainly metal (metallica, Pantera, Guns & Roses, Megadeth) I keep it in a "V" shape most of the time sometimes I put it into a upside down "V". Sound Quality is great does not humm, hiss, create noise.

Takes a bit of playing around with, I don't know much about how equalizers work, all I do is copy the shapes on my teachers amps and then play with the switches until I get something I like. If you know what you're doing, it'll be easy to set up, if you don't, it could take some playing around with. Manual was terrible, didn't tell me anything I already know.

Sound Quality : 10
I have this placed after a Boss DS-1 distortion pedal and it works out great, I get the chunky/scratchy distortion of early Metallica that I want with the help of this pedal. I didn't know an equalizor could have such an effect, it has certainly taught me a thing or two about my effects set up. I would never use a set up without one of these again. I even love the clean sound I get when the distortion is off.

Reliability : 10
I don't think a Boss pedal can be distroyed by conventional means... Long battery life too, considering I have it on ALL the time when I play.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 10
Like I said, it works great after a DS-1 distortion pedal. I actually first found out Boss makes these from a jam session. I met up with a guitarist who used this and his distortion from his amp, and the sound blew me away. When I decided to look for some more effects sounds, I went for one of these right away, and I can create the Metallica/Megadeth/Sabbath types of distortion I want. This pedal kicks ass.

If this isn't an intuitive user interface, then what the deuce is? The only reason why I am not giving a full 10 is that the effective use of this pedal requires some understanding of the underlying theory. A novice user would not be able to realize just how powerful an equalizer can be.

Sound Quality : 9
Does its job. Very powerful when used judiciously. I can easily modify the tone colour by cutting certain frequencies; and the boost can be just easily used to add some overdrive to certain frequencies for guitar solos. I am currently using the pedal for the latter purpose (as post-distortion EQ), and I am quite happy with the sound that I have achieved with the EQ.

Reliability : 10
Has served me well since 1989 when I bought it (used). Absolutely no complaints.

Overall Rating : 10
When I bought this thing, I had little idea of what it could do. Of course I tried all the simple setups (like the "V" setup), and thought that the pedal was "nice" but no more than that. Just "nice".
It was only later that I realized what a gem this pedal was. Today, it is so integral to my characteristic lead guitar sound that I could hardly live without it.
Would I buy another one if I lost it? Heck yeah! In fact, I have been thinking of buying another one anyway, for pre-distortion equalization.
About the only thing that could be better: it would be nice if you could program in and store different EQ "patches" for different needs. You don't want to adjust your EQ sliders in the middle of a gig! But I realize that then this unit would be a good deal more expensive.
If you have never used a graphic EQ, try this pedal (or an equivalent product). Your guitar will never sound the same again.

-The- rule for eq: ALWAYS CUT. AVOID BOOSTING: So, make your highest frequency zero and all the others less than zero. Then boost the vol.slider. Result, virtualy no noise or hiss. Being subtle with the sliders results in the most usuable sounds

Do it like this and it's a fine pedal eq that nails all the guitar hot spots.

dont know havent bought yet BUT

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE HISS LISTEN UP!!!!!!!!!

its not the pedal that is hissing it is your guitar. especially on single coil guitars. thats where most of this hiss comes from. you probably get less hiss if you turn the volume on the guitar off. Maybe it is just the pedal, but if the guitar leaks sound then all this pedal is doing is boosting the volume of the hiss, just like if you turn the volume up on your amp its louder.

again i dont know if its the pedal or the guitar, there could be somethign in the pedal, but it could be the usual noise that any setup can produce, just louder. someone screw around with settings and post here

apparently it is fine in a loop. for people like me it would be very nice to shape up my guitar, for like when i want a really edgy sound (gibson sg soapbars, really can get warm)

knowing boss id say its a good pedal, but also considering, i probably wouldnt use it on stage. i would get a rack unit or something (unless i just wanted something to give a funky sound like boost all the mid-trebs up for an awful sound at the touch of a box)

This Pedal, together with most Boss pedals are very easy to use. You can't go wrong with a Boss!

Sound Quality : 8
Well I only use the GE7 for just one purpose, which is in the FX loop of my Marshall JCM900 combo. I use it to lift the level a bit and slightly boost the bass too. Its does this very well, without introducing lots of noise and hiss in the signal. I have used it in the front end of the amp too, but it was a bit noisy there for some reason. I suppose it depends how you use it!

If you know how to use an Eq there is no problem. If you don?t: remember that the manual sucks (like every Boss manual) and it won?t help you at all.

Sound Quality : 2
After reading all these reviews about GE-7 I was confused. Some people say that this pedal is noisy. Other people say that it is not. Ok. My setup is: Ibanez 550ltd -> Ibanez SM-7 -> Ibanez CF-7 -> Boss DD-3 -> Boss GE-7 -> Peavey Envoy/Marshall JCM800. I bought this pedal because I needed to cut some mids. I tried this pedal with many setups even with no other pedal in my pedalboard. This pedal sucks anyway. My setup is noisier with this pedal. If you have all knobs at 0 the noise is the same even it is on or off. The big nightmare begins when you move the knobs. Even a ?touch? on a knob transforms this idiot box to a TV without an antenna cable.

If the problem was only the noise I would give this pedal a 5. The grade is 2 because GE-7 is not versatile at all. If you don?t set the knobs at least at the half distance from 0 to max or min you are not gonna have any difference from your original sound.

Reliability : 9
Seems solid like every Boss pedal. It is like a stone but even a stone would have better sound than this.

I don?t need them. If one of my pedals is R.I.P. and I like it I?ll just buy it again.

Pretty easy. It's got 8 sliders, one for volume. You can start with the basic V shape, but I assure you there're better sounds. The one setup listed in the instruction booklet is magnificent (although it's not meant to be a demo). The manual isn't very helpful in the sense that this pedal is relatively easy to use. Have fun with it.

Sound Quality : 9
I play this along with a Boss DS-1 distortion pedal, with an Epiphone SG deluxe to a Peavey Classic 212 (tube, made in '79). The pedal is a bit noisy, but no more than you would get from your average single coils. It's just a bit of fuzz, no buzz. It is not noticeable once you start playing. It really does better the sound; I can make my SG sound like a strat. It is simply magnificent if you want a smooth clean sound from your humbuckers. If you boost all of the settings, you get a really nice natural tube overdrive. Don't turn the volume on the pedal up too much, or the sound quality decreases. I'll give it a 9 just because of the noise.

Reliability : 10
I love Boss pedals; you can't do anything to them that will change their quality.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never had to deal with them because their pedals are bulletproof.

Overall Rating : 10
I play pretty much anything. This does a great blues overdrive with my DS-1. With all the settings boosted, the natural overdrive is great. Its best territory is clean, though. After playing with this pedal for even 10 minutes, I couldn't believe I thought my amp sounded good beforehand. It's great; I would reccomend it to anyone.
