Ease of Use : No Opinion
very simple to use, ears will tell you what`s what!

Sound Quality : 9
Not an obvious choice of pedal for hard rock/blues, but if you are a
Gibson player who`s gone off strats due to that harsh, brittle bridge
pickup tone, try the distortion on this, instant gutsy sound, you`ll
learn to love your strat again, I did! I don`t know why Boss didn`t
make this distortion pedal without all the digital extras, it beats the
crap out of anything else in their overdrive/distortion range.

Reliability : 9
Useless with batteries, but it does seem to be sensitive to what power
supply you use, the distortion works whatever power supply is plugged
into it, but the digital bits are a bit variable, will work with one
sort but not another? maybe my pedals getting old,(like me)

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to use it, I have some very old boss pedals, one 27 years
old and still strapped to my pedalboard, (BF-2 by the way),

Overall Rating : 8
Brilliant for making strats playable again! (though doesn`t get rid of
the noise problems), bit temperamental with power supplies, but a good
pedal with some good sounds. Haven`t tried it with solid state amps,
but with good `ole valve amps, a winner,(tried it with my Selmer,Kelly,
Park, fender, carlsboro and was excellent in all of them)

Depending on the output used, it may be a difficult beast to tinker with... level, tone, distortion, and the setting knob for the modulation. short echo and a couple choruses.

Sound Quality : 2
I had this effect about 10 years ago and i thought it sounded amazing... i think. cmon, i was 10!

Okay, through a simple setup (DV8se>6505+/JSX>1960A) it produced tones similar to "******."

the distortion is NOT analog. what you're hearing is DIGITAL DISTORTION. yes, there is such a thing, and it sounds bad.

I'm sure if you're someone who compromises with tone, or owns a tele/fender amp and think you know anything about metal, you may well get a kick out of this effect.

Otherwise, i'd say that in stereo operation with HEAVY eq-ing and through a good clean preamp, you can get some interesting sounds. nothing that can't be achieved with a stereo delay or chorus. the distortion is lacking, no doubt about it. yeah yeah gilmour used it decades ago and now its worth around 100 bucks. listen, I DON'T LIKE IT. why should you? because the price tag told you so.

Reliability : 10
Very reliable. the battery snap broke on my first one... the genius that i thought i was told me to wire it to another pedal in series. that didn't work. anyways, years later i bought another one. and i'd say it'll probably last forever, seeing how its probably going to sit in my closet...forever.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 2
Not worth it. Save your money and get a stereo delay/chorus if thats why you're interested in buying this pedal. NO, it does not sound like metallica. Whoever wrote that had better gotten better at hearing tone these days. No, it does not sound like any heavy metal artist. Don't let the hype fool you. its no surprise why boss discontinued this pedal, don't you think?

Three of the four knobs go all the way around from left to right. The fourth one has six different options. There really is no use for a manual (as with all my BOSS pedals). However, browsing through the short manual could help you benefitting from it's true potential.

Sound Quality : 10
I was really disappointed with the sound when I first heard it. Especially the delay, it was too short and couldn't impress me at all. Then I discovered output B and connected it to my friend's amp: it changed my opinion about this pedal forever, because the sound it produced was both stereo and spacious thanks to the short delaytime. I guess this is what this pedal was made for. I used to have an A+B signal-splitter in order to create stereo sounds but it didn't have the impressive wall of sound. If you want a big sound in a small area, this pedal does the trick. You can also use the pedal to rocket your solos big time!

Reliability : 10
The 4x4 all-terrain pedals by BOSS have always helped me through all the jungles I've gotten myself into.

Never had to deal with them.

Overall Rating : 9
I advise every guitarist who has two amps and wants to have a fat rocksound to get one. If only the monojack (Output A) is used, the sound you get could be too thin and too mushy. The only real disadvantage is that on stage you have to switch manually between the different effects, but overall I am really glad I've bought one. I would certainly miss it if it got lost!

This pedal is easy to use, take a few minutes and you've got the sound you'll need
It didn't come with a manual but I had no need for one.

Sound Quality : No Opinion
The first time I plugged in I didn't like it all an thought it sucked biig time. but... One thing I really missed in the other reviews is the sound in stereo mode. Once I plugged in two amps (fender pro junior/Marshall JTM 30) it really came alive. what a difference!!
So I would say that for mono use I don't like the distortion at all but whenever I play in stereo (at home always) I always use this pedal!
The duobling and chorus option are a nice extra. but I think you have to be carefull and don't overuse it. Stick with the first two settings.

Reliability : No Opinion
I suggest that HC gets rid of this when it comes to a boss compact review.

I play a lot of different styles. My band plays rock cover, but I'm not a guitar player who's trying to immitate other people sounds. I play the rock cover with my own sound (-:
Anyway, I really love Boss pedals and got a lot of them. the MZ-2 is one of the pedals I use most for home use (recording and jammin' around)
If you've got two amps you really should try this pedal!!

well, where do i start, it's a boss pedal, these things are very simple to use, i think even a blonde could use them.

you've got overall level, tone, dive, then the 5 mode chorus/slapback switch.

there are alot of mixed reviews of this pedal, i will review this in my personal experiences with this pedal. i purchased this around 4 years ago from ebay, after using one in the studio of a friend.

Sound Quality : 9
well, an mz-2 to is a 100% analougue distortion/overdrive combined with a digital chorus or slapback/double tracking effect. this digital side accounts for the low battery life, though i use it with a power supply with no hum/extra noise.

the name suggested that this pedal should be a flithy metal pedal ala metallica. the mz-2 is actually more akin to a classic rock/blues pedal. the distortion isnt that scooped mid dual rectifier sound, it's that warm (yes warm, though my tweed fender will make anything sound warm) almost vox british sound.

with the gain quite low, it's a very nice rythymic crunch sound, chord work is quite nice with this.

one sound i have used out of this pedal, is that 80's era queen sound, using a boss sd-1 to boost the input into the pedal and adding the chorus effect. it works quite well, especailly using a burns brian may guitar.

i play alot of 70's era progressive rock, blues, classic rock, with bits of current indie/rock throw in.

my setup is crybaby wah>ehx nano lbp-1>boss sd-1>boss mz-2>boss rt-20>dunlop volume pedal>danelectro pb and j delay>vox ac30>fender tweed twin.

guitar wise i use a fender duo sonic, fender strat, fender telecaster, gibson 335, gibson sg, gibson les paul, daisy rock retro-h 12 string, burns brian may.

with this set up i can get pretty much any sounds i want, apart from metal, which i very rarely play.

Reliability : 10
i have never had any problems with it, then again boss do make things to last, my boss stuff will probably still be going after i've started livin underground!!! hehe

i do have a spare, because for me, it does get some nice sounds, and i think i've paired it with some nice equipment, so i wouldnt wanna be without that sound.

Customer Support : No Opinion
never had to use them yet, but i'm sure they'd sort it out.

this pedal has had very mixed reveiws, i have looked at it from my personal uses for this pedal.

i like this pedal alot, it's been in my pedal board for 4 years and i haven't really strayed away from it, apart from using direct guitar/amp setups. it works as a nice little booster, a nice crunchy rythym and a nice lead tone. dave gilmour has one in his rig, he's a bit of a tone freak so it must have some good quality some of us are missing out on.

This unit has the usual boss controls, level, tone and drive. It also has a mode switch that has some interesting stereo digital effects.

Sound Quality : 8
The reviews of this pedal seem to swing between two camps - those who consider it an amazing "Hetfield" sound and those who think it's rubbish. One or two reviews for this actually make sense, calling it "gloriously low-fi...fantastically shit". Essentially, if you want to get a Hetfield sound out of a pedal, don't bother with Boss (the metalzone, heavy metal and other ds models just don't have enough grit although I can't comment on the new metalcore pedal since I haven't tried it). The metalizer is very much an effect but using it as your tone base is not a particularly wise move. I use the distortion set pretty high with the wider chorus for a white noise intro (think deftones when they wander off and do their own thing). I like effects that make my guitar sound very unlike a guitar, if you want a core distortion tone get a boss ds-1, it's surprisingly versatile at the right settings. Better yet, learn how to use your amp properly.

Reliability : 9
My pedal is almost as old as I am and still works fine. However, it is a little battery hungry.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with them.

Overall Rating : 9
I play what can generally be called progressive, kind of dream theater without as much shred (basically all my sweeping sounds the same so I just keep it to a couple of songs). My set up at the moment generally goes Fender 60th anniversary mexican strat/PRS tremonti SE > Crybaby > Boss DS-1 > Boss MZ-2 > Boss GE-7 > Boss SD-1 as a boost > EHX Wiggler > Vox Valvetronix AD50VT. It gives me a great white noise sound which I'd find hard to replace. I'd buy another if I found it for a reasonable price. When I step on an effect I want people to notice, this certainly does that.

Within minutes for playing with this pedal - I needed to go and catch my socks and put them back on! I originally bought this pedal as I was advised by a very good source that David Gilmour has one on his rig - therefor it had to be done! Very easy to get an excellent sound very quickly!

Sound Quality : 10
This is an incredibly versitile pedal - the basic distortion is analogue and has a great warm sound. The other main sound I use is with the Digital chorus - which I find fantastic! I personnally think it sounds a little like Jake E Lee on "Bark at the Moon".
I strongly advise anyone to invest in one of these babies! you will not be disapointed. Yes there is some noise - but hell it's analogue! Buy an NS-2.
I mainly play this wil a Deluxe Strat and an Ibanez S-470 - however I think this sounds actually sounds better with single coil pick ups!

Reliability : 10
It Boss - what else it there to say!

Easy - Turn the knobs! To be fair, you'd have to be a muppet not to be able to...

Sound Quality : 10
YES! It sounds mega. Gilmour had one in his rig for sorrow, and it does that just fine. Use it as a buffer pedal before your rack or tube amp. NOT solid state. Use it to dive tube amps and you should be fine. I had it for ten years and didn't touch it. The put it before my triaxis/2:90/ etc. and WHOAA BABY - It blows your socks off. Toneful and sweet. And yes...they are now rising in price!!!

If it sits well with your rig - 10. If not, sell it and buy something else!

For the first couple of days, it felt like years, i couldn't get used to figuring out the controls. But once you figure it out, u know your own sound and you can change it as your sound changes. If you get it, it will click emediately or take a while, either way once you've figured it out, its done.

Sound Quality : 8
I run it through a Jackson cop off brand, and a fender cop off brand, all through a vox valvetronix. The whole overall sound if you want the clean dry tube like distortion, it comes at a price-
-It gets really raspy sometimes
-you can forget about having single coule pick-ups or continuosly play so the "hum" noise isn't audible
if you like the muddle sachurated distortion-
-"hum" noise is still there on single coils
Over all the bad that ive said, i do have to say this is a great pedal if you can't afford a Head with the controls you want, it is very versitle, it seems to have some sort of chorus effect or something to give it more bottom end (is not so much bad or good).
But if you have the money buy a bogner uberschall or a trible rectifier, you will be much happier with the vaccuum tube distortion.

Reliability : 10
Boss has never made a pedal i wouldn't rely on.
Ive never ever had a boss pedal give out on me.

I play everything from heavy metal to pop rock to classic rock to even country, so this definately suits my hard rock/metal needs for now. I have been playing it for about 6 months, i used some of the DS models and still use some, vox wah wah pedal, and the whammy bar thats about it, i keep it pretty simple. if it ever got stolen, i would have to be in a real jam to buy another one, like 5 hours before a show, but i would probably just use my vox and double the sound with the 0 second delay. I love that it actually can sound clean crisp and focused, but with that, there is ALWAYS a hint of raspy sound.my favorite feature is the gain knob, i pretty much change that every time I play. A decent tube amp would wipe the crap out of this pedal in comparison though. I chose this pedal because of its versitility and bottom end. I JUST WISH THE RASPY WASN'T THERE! If you know your sound you want, it will not get in the way, but if you don't and you need to record, it will suck.

This pedal is very easy to use, ya just set the level, tone, drive and mode. The modes are like this
SGL- Just like a normal Distortion/OD pedal
Doubling 1 2 and 3- Makes the sound full and thick , perfect for solos
Chorus- Heavy thick sound along with a nice chorus effect
If you cant figure how to work, well darn then i guess your'e in a pickle

Sound Quality : 10
I use either a 1981 Fender strat transition model or a Ibanez RG-7620 7 string, The metalizer, Boss ME-30 and a Marshall JCM 2000 TSL 100 Half stack.
With single coil pickups the sound is sort of noisy but with humbucking pickups its pure beauty. And destruction. Beauty and destruction. This effect sounds perfect for those solos where you need a boost or to be more pronounced because it creates super thick sound.
I dont usually try to get " an artist's sound" I just set it until it sounds badass and leave it alone. Overall it sounds awesome , although some others might say otherwise

Reliability : 10
for dependability, what do you expect from a boss? , this shit is like those Jeep commercials , its "Trail Rated", bullet proof , could protect the pope , probably the most durable of all pedals. I would definately use it in a gig without a backup. Then Id throw it at the hecklers and it would still be fine!

Customer Support : No Opinion
I never had to deal with them, so I cant say.

Overall Rating : 9
Overall I would give it a 9 because nothings perfect. A few more options would be nice, but its fine the way it is. I play lots of rock/Blues/jazz/metal and it fits in well with some, but not all. If it where lost id probably get a GT-6 because the metalizer is pretty rare.It really helps if you are a lead player or rythem (with lots a balls) and it doesnt get in the way at all.

"7"....a bit more "complicated" than the average Boss pedal knuckle-brainer is used to, but still, you don't need a manual to figure this one out...

Sound Quality : 10
"10"....actually a '9' but I wanted to give this pedal its due. I see some of these '2' and '3' ratings from all of these supposed metal/rock gods here. Usually if you read reviews that have proper spelling and decent grammer it's a good indicator of the mentality of the player/reviewer. Anyway, the standard distortion sound is great/high gain but not over the top--a heavy overdrive. I don't use the effects settings as they cover up the basic distortion sound too much for my taste. The distortion plus effects settings are interesting in the fact that when you go thru the dist/doubling or dist/chorus or dist/'flange' (one by one) you can hear the sounds of Ozzy, Dokken, Yngwie, etc. You'll instantly know what I mean when you flip thru the preset sounds (if you lived thru the '80s metal rage). A "9" for distortion alone.

Reliability : 10
Boss reliable ? Uh, YEAH....

Never had to...Boss pedals never break down....

Overall Rating : 9
A "9" for distortion. I won't rate it with the other effects (such as dist/chorus or dist/doubling) to be fair, as those sounds are very dated sounding with the presets (very 1986-87).
Nice heavy overdrive with very good definition.

good if you want to play Queensryche or other "soft" Heavy Metal in general, but if you want it CRUNCHY FORGET ABOUT THIS PEDAL !!! I had it for a week or so ( many years ago, when I was in a quest for a good Heavy Metal / Thrash Metal distortion ) and I remeber that the built in Chortus effect was Great, but the distortion itself sounded too week for my needs. sounds great for leads, but if you try to play Metallica with this it will end up sounding like Van Halen ( even with EQ pedals after it ). after a while I knew I would need to sell this pice of crap so I did it. reccommendable only for Van Halen/Angelica soft Hard rock / metal in general

I like the double similar to the cho mod but to many people uses that on stage when the go out of tune under the light.Drive other effects with it or bus it to get a modern chrunchy sound with little effect it's got alot of push I'd say I've got 20 or so boss effect unit 4-8 distortion units some are better if your looking main stream but this has some sweat spots , no I'll not going to start to eat chocalate bars for every meal, but thier is some good tone on this thing if you can present it.

Well, i made a review for this pedal (my first) and I love it. Now I'm using it working with a HM-2 Heavy Metal. Both very easy to use.

Sound Quality : 9
Using an Aria Strat (S/S/H) and a Meteoro 30W Combo. I linked It before the HM-2, setting then like this:

- MZ-2:

15% volume, Full tone, full drive, any effect

- HM-2:

75% volume, lows cranked, 50% highhs, 5-15% distortion.

When the MZ-2 is on normal mode or doubIII, it's very interesting for rhythm, and the leads are very cool when on the chorus modes. The HM-2, when on this set, gives the sound a brutal low end, a la death metal. I found this set not noisy, even on high amp volume there's not much feedback. The only problem is sustain, but i will probably fix it with a CS-3. Very good for heavy metal, even to the extreme sides.

Sound Quality : 9
I used this pedal with a Marshall AVT50 combo.
Not sure why some people found it noisy. My amp that I use for bedroom jamming is right next to my TV and yet there's no buzz from my set up (humbucking fender strat, planet waves cable and patch cords, and an assortment of Boss effects: DD3, CH1, OC2, RV5)..note the lack of any noise suppressors.
This is not really a metal pedal as far as I can tell, it's just a very warm sounding heavy overdrive pedal.
Very nice warm tones right out of the box.

Dead easy. Mine was made in about 1987 and the manual / box are long lost. Needless to say I didn't need them.

Sound Quality : 9
It sounds much better than I expected. A great high gain sound, but it's versatile so mess about with the drive / tone and you'll get a lot out of it. Although I would say crank up the drive and enjoy.

I actually REALLY dislike metal music, just reminds me of the horrible local 'alternative' night at The Ritz in Manchester, full of sad skulky 14 year old skater / goth style people (who laughingly refer to themselves as 'punks')... sorry sorry, I know not ALL metal is sh#t, if you're a proper metal fan you probably loathe these people just as much as I do.

.... Erm, anyway, what I am trying to say is even though I hate metal and it's cliched subsidiaries, I love using this for a rock tone.

The doubling / chorus effects are useful in the sense that you can thicken up the sound without needing a seperate box. Or, have your delay / chorus boxes set to something else. Great!

The FUNNIEST thing is when the batteries run out. In fact they only last about 10 mins in here, a PSA is a must.

What happens it it starts stuttering and swaying and sounds REALLY cool if you;re a noise merchant. Sounds like a Robot dying, honest. Excellent!

Reliability : 9
The batteries are a concern if you don't have a PSA, unless you WANT to achieve the weird stuttering effect. Although, should this come under Reliability? I dunno. They do warn you on the bottom sticker however.

I do like it. I like it a lot. I owned a DS-1 and a DS-2 and didn't particularly like either of them. What's oddest is that both those are suppoedly the 'Nirvana' sound, but I actually found it easier to coax Nirvana tones out of this. Go figure, as they say.

Seriously, it's not exactly one of their more 'sought after' pedals but just you wait, one major artist will name-check one and this pedal could well command premium prices. It's cool as hell (in a REALLY cheesy way!) and much more interesting than a Metal Zone or DS-1 or 2.

One of my favourite distortion pedals, and I have owned all the Boss ones, and a lot of MXR / Electro Harmonix / Ibanez / Dod, etc stuff.

Can't say I understand those who slam this pedal. I have six Biss overdrive/distortion pedals, and this is by far the one with the greatest high gain sound. Whereas the DS-1 has a Marshally, scooped mid tone, the MZ-2 sounds like a Boogie Rectifier, with lots of mids. In fact it's best conceived as a OD-2 Turbo Overdrive on steroids, with more gain and more bottom end - exactly what the OD-2 has always needed. I've had numerous tube preamps in the past - JMP-1, V-Twin, Quad-X - but this pedal actually sounds better in the high gain department. It's tighter than all of them, for instance.

One little thing: When you switch the pedal on or off, you'll get a little burst og the clean guitar signal, when the sound changes, which is a little annoying.

The digital effects are not too much to care about. OK, but not everyone likes chorus or "doubling" (really a short delay or two), and you can't adjust their parameters, so you either like or don't like them. I run it without.

Reliability : 9
Sturdy. One of the two output jacks' nuts are missing, though.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with them.

Overall Rating : 9
A great pedal for Boogie-style high gain sounds. Will make your rig sound expensive. Underrated and far better than its reputation. I wish Boss would put this distortion circuit into a new pedal.

This is just a really ODD pedal to say the least. now, i have a broad range of genre's of music i listen to, but deep inside im all metal. and when i say metal, i mean REAL metal. i do not watch mtv, i do not listen to radio stations that play anything from the past 3 years, because to be honest-there is little skill there. i know my tone farily well, and this pedal is quality. the gain is of a different character than i've ever heard-it's saturated, but not for the likes of some of my favorites, like the great metallica + megadeth, because this pedal does NOT have the big thump thump palm mutes you need for that. but what i use this pedal for, black metal, it's unbeatable. it's distorted quite a bit, but still retains great character as i mentioned, and it does not mud up at all, which is important. the 2xing and chorus effects are acually pretty damn cool. the 2xing effect adds a real neat BF-2 boss flanger metallic sound, which it's famous for. so you can get that metallic tinge without flanging. the pedal, also, if you turn down the drive all the way and your volume knob quite a bit, can get clean light chorus.im using a hotrodded 91' jap strat(which emg's and oujiaboard finish, yeah, im a kirk fan) and this pedal sounds great. it's really in your face. i would label this the mercyful fate pedal, because it get's their ryth sound down real well. anyway, i reccomend!

Yep this baby sounds worse than the girl who sits accross from me at work and tries to sing - it just irritates the shit out of me.
I tried to dial in a workable sound but couldn't even do that - everything sounded so over done it just wasn't funny. the chorus effect is weak and not intense (if you think it is your an idiot)thats why chrous pedals are separate (and dont even get me started on those little multi effect shit boxes)

this thing is the worst pedal Boss have ever made, its early digital crap - so your sound is probably going through a 3bit convertor, and this thing eats batteries like there is a shotage scare or something, that moron below who said he went on holiday and came back & the light being on & shit - that is the biggest load of crap i have ever read, what a tosser, ask anyone who has a digital pedal will tell you straight up that a battery will only last a few hours. I use an Aria Pro Strato with two singles and a humbucker and a Meteoro Thor 30W Amplifier. It has a little noise when it's on and you aren't playing, so that's not a big trouble. The effects just sound great (when i went to buy my distortion pedal I compared it to the Tubescreamer from Ibanez and I really loved this BOSS). The distortion is heavy (yeah, very HEAVY!!!) and the DOUBLES and CHORUSES are killer. As I use it to play heavy/thrash/black metal (Maiden/Iced Earth/old Metallica/King Diamond/Mercyful Fate) it just sounds great for me.

Easy to use. I figured it out pretty easily without a manual.
It's your basic metal distortion sound with the added bonus of
digital effects(double I,II,III & chorus I,II).Also features
level, tone and drive controls.

Sound Quality : 8
I'm using this with a stock Fender Telecaster and a Statocaster with a JB Jr. in the bridge position. I plug into the MZ-2 to a new Peavey Bandit 112. I usually have the amp switched to the vintage setting for a crunch sound and use this pedal as a lead drive(normally without the included effects).

This gives me a nice thick lead sound even with my tele. It's great for that early Prince lead sound which is what made me want to play
guitar in the first place. The sustain I get using it as a lead drive
is amazing!

I don't use the internal effects that much though they sound fine. I think it thins out the distortion to much. Using this pedal through the clean channel of my amp(again vintage setting) I can get a good crunchy sound but I prefer the amp for that.

Reliability : 10
I've had several Boss effects(DS-1, OD-2, BF-2, CE-3) and have never had any kind of problems with them. As others have stated this is a battery sucker and will use up a 9 volt within several hours even without use the effects. I'm getting an adapter for sure.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 8
I play mostly rock from Hendrix to Rage Against The Machine to Prince and this pedal serves me well for almost everything in a lead capacity.
I've been playing since '86 and this the best distortion pedal I've had(althogh the OD-2 overdrive/distortion is very versitale). So, to sum up the effects are utility and add to the versatility. The distortion is best for a lead drive over a crunch sound. If you find this pedal for the low price I found it for definitely buy it even if you don't think you need a metal pedal.

I use a Fender strat with Kirk Hammett signature 81/81 EMG pickups, CryBaby wah, Proel volume, and Danelectro phaser or flanger through a Laney 50 watt GC50A or Crate 20 watt. This Sound it is great. Very Powerful and clear distortion. Now I can play my favorite metallic riffs with my guitar sounding just like the CD. This pedal should be called the the Digital Metallica. Its sound is exactly the same as Hetfield's main sound. Turn the tone all the way up and you've got Hammett's tone.

Honestly, its easy as. Tone, Gain, Volume and a selctor switch to go between 2 types of chorus, 3 types of doubling and normal dist. Oh and not to mention the footpedal

Sound Quality : 2
Sound quality is crap. It gives you a dry, rough sound on the lowest tone setting available. The sound doesn't differ much between the double options. Or between the chorus options. I would have prefered a 3 band eq.
There's alittle bit of excess noise, not too much tho. But it's just not a good sound.

As with all Boss Products, it is reliable as heck. You could probably drop it out of a second storey window onto concrete and it'll still work. The knobs would break off tho, but it would still work.

But the Sound is very very very cool! I play Nu Metal (like Linkin Park or 4Lyn). For this Sound it is great. Very Powerful and clear distortion. I play it for Rhytm-work. Buy it if you like the music of Linkin Park, Metallica (It`s like James Hetfield`s tone if you have full Drive!!!), Edguy, Hammerfall, etc. You can get many different tones with it. It's fairly easy to use. The controls are easy enough but to get the best sound, it's best to turn tone and drive to full and just adjust the level as much as needed. The "chorus" isn't useful at all except for some decent lead tone.

Sound Quality : 5
I'm using this with an Epiphone Les Paul. The sound I can get out of the pedal is a very basic distortion. It lacks any sort of bite or definition. It's sort of just muddy at times and the tone knob is useless unless turned to full. If you just want a distortion pedal and you dont care about specific tone, then you might as well get this one. But there are many other better pedals around. The variety of chorus settings are all identical and don't change the tone very much. Disappointing. Not terrible, just bad.

Reliability : 8
It's built like a rock but it sucks up batteries like madness. I woun't gig with it almost solely because it would most likely fade out on me.

I play any type of music really but this pedal doesn't seem to fit into any genre. It's just a really stale pedal, no feeling whatsoever. If it was stolen or lost, I'd most likely not get it again unless it was at a bargain price, and that's still a very big maybe. I don't like much about this other than the fact that it's decent for power chords and coupled with some other effects, it's not half bad. It's not versatile at all though so your much better off with something else. I wish this thing didn't have the chorus and just devoted itself to being a distortion pedal. It's my only distortion pedal so it got me by on a few occasions but I'm buying a new one soon and selling this one. Just because this thing has chorus as well as distortion, don't buy it. It's not worth it. Unless it's cheap cheap cheap.

Pretty easy - 4 knobs. Level,Tone and drive and then a knob that assigns 6 uses - Single guitar, 3 options of doubling with increased presence and 2 chorus/distortion patches.

Its easy to plug in and start playing. I don't have a manual but it makes no difference.

Sound Quality : 9
I love this pedal - its like Steve Lukather in a box. On the chorus settings at least this is true. The doubling effect is cool and harmonics just leap out of your guitar. Its funny to do Eddie Van Halen impressions....don't get me wrong though I'm not some metal playing loony - this pedal sounds cool for loads of styles - Noel Gallagher riffs and solos sound top in the doubling settings. Its versatile but I'd still use a couple of other distortions but thats just me.

Cool trick - Plug in your amp into output B rather than A, and you can access quirky vibrato and less distortion - very good for picking out lines.

I'd say if your not afraid to try something a little different then check this but if your a bit if a turd then stick with what you know.

If I see another one of these cheap I may well buy it for either future trade or collectable value - This is being touted as a future Boss collectable by those in the know - so keep your eyes peeled.

Hmmm, you plug it in and kick it....Hold your ears, they may bleed...

Sound Quality : 9
It sounds great if you're looking for distortion from the bowels of hell that jumps up and grabs ya by the ballz. Otherwise, it's crap. You can basically on get one sound out of it, "RRRRRRRRRRRRRR", kinda like that "death march" sounding interlude from Joe Satriani's The Snake, right before it goes into into the clean funk interlude. I used to use it for getting feedback out of my old horrible Peavy Special 112. It's great for recording useful feedback and harmonics at low volumes, kinda like Satch on crack. Otherwise, it's a metal machine of utter distruction, and should be used but not abused, lest it abuse your ears in an act of ironic retribution. If you're looking for nasty, 80's "supermetal" type distortion, then this is the stop box for you. If not, it sucks. I'll judge it for what it is and give it a 9.

Reliability : 8
Uh, it worked for me until my friend John borrowed it, then it worked from him, and probably still does, where ever he went.... I was bummed that they discontinued it. It's a peice of crap, but not in the reliability sense, it could live forever if it weren't for the battery suckage. You can rely on it to color your tone for "special occasions, or you can rely on it to suck. Either way, still very reliable.......Boss.

I use this with an Ibanez RG570 thru a Trace Elliot Tramp. I find it very difficult to get decent or even managable sound out of it, For a boss pedal with a list of $179.00 im dissapointed. The doubling effect is almost absent and the chourus effect sounds as if its sleeping. It does have a good overdrive and blusey feel to it though. The Metal Zone is by far the best and most affordable dist out there.

Sound Quality : 9
Ok- this is the thing about this pedal. It doesn't have a good sound anywhere in here. That shit about the "hetfield" tone and all is wrong. I use it though in my rig. It sounds good for what **I** need it for, it sounds harsh, thin and fuzzy. Perfect contrast to my normal fat thick warm sound. It sounds like a power line coming down and that's what I need for exactly 30 seconds in one song. I love the tone for that, it just buzzes fuzzes and rocks forever, and for that, it gets a 10. If you're using this as a tone base- you're insane! BTW- my settings and rig: Settings: Level-9 o'clock, tone full up, drive full up, and I use the DoubIII setting, my amp is a Peavey 5150 full stack, and my guitars are ESP- M-II and Viper, all with Seymour Duncan JB pickups. I use a Washburn strat copy with a humbucker in the bridge. For amplification I use an old, but cool, Peavey Deuce (212, 120W). The Distortion on the pedal is awesome, but there is too much sustain when the gain is cranked to ten. Often, open chords sound "muddy", but barre and power chords sound excellent. The chorus isn't mind blowing, but does make for a fuller sound. The doubling effect gives a nice "klick", sounds kind of like a Marshall amp. I would suggest using a guitar with humbuckers to get the best sound out of this pedal. My washburn has 2 stock single coils which do not do it justice.

I put in a submission before, I must have been on crack at the time. I use an Ibanez RG-570 throught the metalizer (when I used it) to a Crate G-40C. The thing was noisy, trebly and fuzzy(bad fuzzy, not even good for hippie shit). I used to have this jaded idea that it sounded good, but it sucked. Basicly, you had crackly fuzz, muddy fuzz, lightly chorused crackly fuzz and just about any kind if undesirable kind of fuzz you could think of. It really took away the sound of the guitar too and it killed the sustain. It just sounded really digital, it didn't really distort, it sounded like a fish farting into a tin can. The closest this gets to any style of music is, well nothing, it just sucks.

Reliability : 5
I used to think, since it was a Boss it could take anything and keep going, whether that was desirable or not, but to my great surprise, it's dead. Yeah and the best thing is that since it's digital, fixing it myself is completely out of the question, I know somebody who could fix it, but it's not worth it. Its not like it was abused either, it just kind of sat on my bedroom floor.

never dealt with them

This thing sucks, I would never buy it. I ended up using my crate's distortion, it sucked too much, so I finally bought a Fab Tone, kicks the Metalizer in the ass! It's funny that a funky lookin' box with a name like Fab Tone would be more metal than a box called Metallizer! The one thing I liked about it was that it had two outputs, so I could use it with a stereo Y-split into headphones, but other than that it was useless. It was just way to digital sounding. By the end I never used it for anything except a headphone amp, so I don't mind if its dead, plus it ided when my friend borrowed it so I got some money for it, which is nice.

There is a choice of a few different chorus and doubling effects, but overall there's not much you can do with those effects. But overall, it's pretty easy to use.

Terrible sounding. Leads sound muddy and undefined. Any chords other than barre chords sound horrible.

Fine, I guess.

My old (1985, not newer) Arion SD-1 blows this away at a fraction of the (original) price.

i bought this pedal thinking it would be better than metalzone and hypermetal, but in reality it's one metal setting that you can alter either by having an echo on it (doubling) or a chorus effect.. so i realized that why should i bother owning this when i already have a dd-3 and a ce-2 (delay and chorus pedals). instead, i think i should have bought a metalzone, which lets you change the sound of the metal rather than just the tone/effect laced with it.
the pedal sounds way too harsh too.. (traded it in for a superphaser)

It's a BOSS, how hard can it be, came with my first real guitar, so as a novice it was a little hard to get a good sound out of it, but as time passed its become a lot more versatile.

Sound Quality : 9
I'm using an older RG570 with a Crate G-40C, this pedal is soooo versatile. I hated it at first, but after about a year(I'm a novice) I am able to get the sounds I want out of it. Great for metal(Metallica, Iron Maiden), but I can get an awesome Black Sabbath and even Zeppelin sound out of it. The distortion sounds great, but I've found the chorus just to be a nuisance so I just don't use it, no problem, but its there if I want it. Very versatile, it can produce anything from a mild overdrive to a screaming metal sound.

Reliability : 8
Its a BOSS, I got this used I don't know what the guy who had it first did, but it's got this big hole on the side of the switch cover, but it works great, I don't gig, but if I did I would use this(its all I've got!), but it has never done anything weird, except burn out 9-volts in record time!

I play mostly hard rock and metal, but some 70's stuff too, really anything from Zeppelin to Iron Maiden, this pedal can do it. This pedal is my only pedal and I would never get rid of it(jerk-offs only wanna give $20 for it!), if it were stolen I'd have to beat somebody mercilessly with a crowbar;), but I probably wouldn't buy it again unless I could find another one for a really good price, I like to mess arounf with new stuff. I think that you could get a similar sound out of the Metal Zone and I never use the chorus, plus the Metal Zone has so many more knobs to mess with It would take me years to get all the sounds out of it. This has probably helped me the most with my music because the Crate's distortion sucks and I don't have anything else. I even used this as an amp before I got one(plugged into my stereo, it worked!) I've found that for my setup and my style of music this pedal is great, but I wish I could get a nice marshall/tube sound out of it, but its more for a solid-state, Metallica/Slayer sound. If you know any good setings, email me I'd appreciate it.

Very simple. 4 knobs Level, tone, drive, mode. 6 modes: 3 doublers, 2 chorus, one straight ahead distortion which kills the metal zone.

Sound Quality : 10
I would use this pedal with any guitar with a humbucker. To get a good sound from a strat you'd have to have a single coil thats hotter than hell. Surprisingly low noise factor here. The in and out swooshing of the chorus is inaudible when you're NOT playing. The chorus sound is amazing with a 4x12 marshall stack. This pedal should be called the the Digital Metallica. Its sound is exactly the same as Hetfield's main sound. Turn the tone all the way up and you've got Hammett's tone.

Reliability : 10
Its a BOSS. It will NOT break.

I play Progressional Rock/metal. It is a great all around pedal for any sound. I'd buy it again if it were stolen. If you are into Metallica, KMFDM, Queensryche, or Dream Theatre buy this pedal.

Of course it's easy to use. Like you already know, there are only four knobs to choose between... that couldn't be so difficult to hand with, Could it? But it's extremly ifficult to get a good sound of it... 'cause it has no good sound in it...

Sound Quality : 1
First of all before I throw this pedal with the carbages I'm gonna tell you what equipment I was using when I tested it. I used my Fender USA Stratocaster 40th anneversary and a Gibson Les Paul Standard -92, Spectraflex cables, Marshall JCM900 Hi-gain Dual Reverb 100w combo 2*12". Notice... I didn't use any kind of effects expect this fu**ing pedal. The tone-control sux, you don't have any speciall use of it. The drive-control is the knob that I used most... and it sounds best with high gain settings... although it's sounding far from good... you know that typical "transistor-made-in-taiwan-soud": BZZZZZZZZZZ!!! And it's very noisy... It can't be my Marshall cos I was using the clean channel. :-( The chorus-kno is the only one that affects the sound in a good way, it can infact sound almoust good with some other distortion pedals (valve). You can have that control to get 3 doubing- sounds and 2 different chorus-sounds.

Reliability : 4
I have only used it on a gig at once... When my Marshll was broke, so I haved to take my Samick 10w transistor (hihi) amp... so I really didn't care about the sound then... No I use that pedal as a football...:-)

Customer Support : 10
Well The pedal isn't broke yet... It is still working after 3 years... so I can't complain about the customer support.

Overall Rating : 4
I would never ever buy that thing again... I've been palying the guitar for 9 years and I have noticed that you can have much better sound than what you get with this pedal... Buy something else!

Quite easy to get a good sound. It is a shame boss discountinued it. Small manual with a few settings that I thought were crap!

Sound Quality : 7
I use a homemade guitar (strat-like) with seymour duncan full shred pickup (humbucker) + a peavey bandit 112 I like sounds like van halen and metallica, those scooped mids and rough edged sounds. This unit has a good doubling effect that works great + 2 choruses. Nice touch Boss! Not good for a marshall type sound. Bluesy sounds are kinda possible.

Reliability : 10
You need the dc adapter. It eats through batteries like a sex starved hore! None the less very reliable.

I play rock, metal it is a good piece of equipment but I would like a marshall type sound. Maybe even a santana sound but not with this pedal. I love the doubling. If you turn the drive down to 0 and put the chorus on it can sound nice clean. It helps me play music a touch. If its cheap secondhand and comes with an adapter.... get one!

Very easy to get a good sound from it, in the instructions it has a bunch of good settings. Easy to change the battery.

Sound Quality : 9
So far haven't found it to be too noisy, yet. The effects are great and there are two outputs on it and a chorus with distortion, so it would probably sound good if you used it with two differnt cabinets. The chorus is alright and the distortion is great.

Reliability : 10
I guess it is dependable, but the batteries don't last long, I would recommend getting one of those AC adapters for it.

Don't know

I would probably buy it again, I like all of the distortion settings and the versatility. The chorus and distortions are great. I compared it with the hyper metal pedal by Boss, which was the pretty much the same price. I chose this one because it had basically the same distortion with more options. Buy an AC adapter for it instead of spending 3 dollars on each of those stupid 9 volt batteries.

a pretty straight forward pedal, step on it to make it work, and remember to unplug it when your done

has a lot of "hiss" when not playing, and is REALLY trebely! Would be a great pedal for a metal player, but if looking for classic distortion go with another boss product. The chorusing opton makes very faint textures in sound and isn't worth the space for an extra knob. For this genre of distortion it kicks but is pisses away battery life like you wouldn't beleive. Wouldn't buy it again

Reliability : 9
All I have to say is that it's a Boss product and is extremely solid. I've kicked, jumped on, and stood on the thing out of frusturation and it won't break. Like I said, battery life in minimal. Definately reliable with an ac adapter though.

I wouldn't buy this thing for anything less than $50, I hate the lack of tones, the damn short battery life, and I wished it had a more of a sane distortion tone which would actually be useful in the music industry. If however you like metal, it's most likely for you. and lastly, get an ac adapter, and stick with something else by Boss

I was reading the reviews on this pedal, and I was appalled! The people who submitted those must have been on drugs! The Digital Metallizer is THE BEST distortion unit that I have EVER used. And I run a guitar shop, so I see a LOT come and go! It is so EASY to use! The manual is such a help, I can't believe it! It has all of the perfect settings! I can now sound like a cross between Hendrix and Clapton. I am a uitar God now, thanks to this pedal!

Sound Quality : 10
Like I said, this pedal is an amazing sounding device! The chorus effects are SO WILD and INTENSE, I can hardly take it! It takes my solos to another dimention!

Reliability : 10
Well, I've had mine for 6 years, and have changed the battery EXACTLY 15 times. I once went on vacation, and accidentally left it plugged in. Well, when I returned, the little red light was still shining bright! It was truely a moving experience! I cried.

Customer Support : 10
Since I run a guitar shop, I tend to talk to the good ol' Boss/Roland fellows a lot, and they are SO helpful! They are even considering making me a custom Metallizer (with my own special twists) if I can sell enough of their products by the end of the year!

Overall Rating : 10
I think I'v emade myself clear, but if not: This is THE pedal, for ANY Sound! It is so flexible! I can get warm blues to intense raging death metal. The doubling effect sounds as if 10 other guitarists are jamming along with me! I recommend that everyone e-mail Boss and see if they can get this pedal back on the market! It reigns supreme over recent Metal pedals like the Metal Zone and Hyper Metal. BUY IT!!!! BUY TEN OF THEM IF YOU MUST!!!! BECOME A GUITAR GOD LIKE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's really noisy. It makes a ton of feedback. There is distortion, 3 different doublings, and 2 chorus options on this pedal. All 3 doublings are the same and you can hardly tell if it's doubling. The 2 chorus options just make more feedback and slight chorusing. You can't make clean chorus even if you turn the Drive knob to 0.

Reliability : 3
It's very undependable. I can charge the battery up the night before and then jam for 15 minutes. I'll leave the cord plugged into the input jack and go up and get a drink. I'll come down in 5 minutes and the battery will be completely drained and it would sound like crap. In other words, it's a battery sapping machine.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I'll never bother fixing it for 2 reaons. 1. The name "digital metalizer" makes it too embarrasing to take it into a music store for fixing. 2. It's already too crapped up to get any worse.

Overall Rating : 1
Overall, it sucks. It looks and sounds ugly. I would never take it to a gig because it would be too embarrasing to stop halfway through every other song to change the battery. I ended up selling it to some sucker at a music store for $30 Canadian. My friend went to the same store the other day and saw it for sale for $120. What a rip-off!

Four Knobs. You'd think it would be easy. I got mine without a manual, so I was lost there, but it has basic distortion knobs. Its not as though its hard to use. Getting a good sound out of it, that's another story.

Sound Quality : 1
This pedal isn't THAT noisy, but it ain't quiet. It has 6 modes : normal, 3 delays, and 2 choruses. The 5 doubling effects are not only VERY subtle, they all sound EXACTLY THE SAME. Getting a good distortion out of it is impossible. Its either too fuzzy or too thin. Never a middle, bassy sound. Its a treble pedal.

Reliability : 4
This pedal sucks batteries like you wouldn't believe. 15 minutes and the battery is dead, I absolutely swear. I don't even think that an adaptor could save this thing.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Well, its a Boss, so naturally, when you get so pissed at it and throw it against the wall, it'll still work. That's the only good thing I can think of about this pedal.

Overall Rating : 2
I never ever want to this pedal again. It is worse than my old DOD thrash master! It is the trebliest, fuzziest (in a bad way) pedal I have ever had the displeasure of hearing. The doubling adds a VERY slight chorus effect, like two identical notes played at the same time. Big deal. It's name is misleading, it isn't a metal pedal, it should be called the digital Crappitizer. I guess that's why they stopped making them. I read a review of it in a guitar magazine, and they said roughly the same things. Trust me, if you want a "metal" sound, get another BOSS metal pedal, and if you want a fuzz sound, two words: Big Muff.
