Pretty easy to use...4 knobs, one each for Rate, Depth, Resonance, and then a Mode I / Mode II selector. I don't have a manual for it, but the controls are easy to get used to

Here is my setup: Custom Built Strat >> Boss PH-2 >> Boss CS-3 >> Boss DS-1 >> MXR Phase100 >> Marshall AVT20.
I get great sounds out of this phaser. It's totally different from the the MXR, but it's a good thing. Having a classic phaser and a newer, more metallic sounding phaser in my setup really has increased my possibilities. It does get a little noisy when I have the DS-1 on with it, but so does my MXR, so no real complaint here. I am a HUGE Incubus fan and it is no problem getting Einziger's sound out of this phaser. LOVE IT!!!

I haven't had it long enough to say that I can rely on it, after all, I did buy it on Ebay. BUT, it is a Boss, and I have never had a Boss fail on me...

Overall, this is a great phaser. I play alot of Incubus, so this purchase has really helped me to get that sound I have been looking for. If I lost it, or it was stolen, I would definitely try to find another one. Like I said, I have an MXR phaser and this Boss one, and while they are totally different sounds, they are both great. I decided to add phaser number 2 to my setup to try and get a diverse sound, the MXR is sometimes a little to warm for what I want to play. If you are looking for a more modern phase sound, you should pick this one up if you can find one, Boss doesn't make these anymore.

i'm running this with an ibanez GAX70 and a fender deluxe 112 plus solid state combo. sounds quite good. has a nice, incubus style phase sound. he uses the same pedal though, so that makes sense. it's not noisy at all, unless it's in mode 2 with the res cranked. and i have the res off and am always on mode 1, so i don't worry about it much

You don't necessarily just turn it on and get a great sound, but the dials are fairly self-explanatory, and easy enough to use.

Deluxe Amercian Standard Strat, PH-2, MXR Phase 90, Dunlop Crybaby (standard), Fender Twin Reverb Amp; Rickenbacker bass, PH-2, Peavey TNT 160 Amp.
This pedal is a little tricky. About 75% of this pedal's range is very effect heavy. I find that my tone gets really bogged down if I turn the dials past 12 oclock. Mode II is, to me, almost useless for guitar and rarely useful on bass. It's just too thick, the sound of your instrument is completely lost, you just get effect. That said, in Mode I you can get excellent phase tones if you don't get carried away with the knobs. With all three knobs set at about 10 o'clock, you get a warm smooth phase that still sounds like a guitar, and I have not necessarily heard a better one. I use it for all kinds of funk stuff, and my band-mates seem to be happy with the sound. If you want to play around with out-there, water-in-outer-space sound effects, you can certainly dial that in as well, but your band-mates will scowl at you. Plug your bass in with the dials set at 12 oclock for a gpretty funky bass effect you can actually use.

I have had this pedal for 13 years, lost it in my trunk for about two years, and really never took care of it, and it still works as well as the day I got it. It has never, not even once, not been there for me.

I generally play a Meters-funk/funky R&B with hip-hop feel kind of a thing. Few covers, occasionally Chameleon or anything from the Meters song-book. I like to make songs sound like me instead of trying to sound like the song, and I have found that I can use this pedal for virtually anything if I don't get carried away with the dials. I'll use it instead of flange (never felt like I needed one with this pedal), and occasionally in lieu of wah or envelop filter, just to give a song like Burning of the Midnight Lamp a little different feel. When used right this pedal is great, but until you get a feel for it, you may actually hate it. The effect can get so thick that you feel like you can't dial out of it. Just don't get carried away and you'll get great sound every time.

I read the manual on the train back home after buying the thing... if you were stupid enough not to be able to figure it out the manual wouldnt have helped.. but hey.. its not hard to use. Fairly easy to get a nice sound from it, Mode 2 is a little bit harsh for my ears, especially up around the 12th fret.

Good sounds from this thing, Ive got an Epiphone LP Standard through a marshall VS100, sounds good on any of the 3 channels clean dirty or reall really really distorted. Can get kinda harsh on mode 2 if youre playing really high notes as it tends to bring out the treble sounds more. Good for incubus stuff (yeah i know.. i bought it cause mikey has one.. shut up now) but you could just as easily mess with it and experiment, you can get a ton of sounds from it. Pedal sounds really good with a little tinge of distortion.

I play mostly Rock stuff.. Goo Goo Dolls, Fuel, Incubus, Foo Fighters, Queens of the stone age... you know ... pedal works nicely for all of them. Ive been playing for about a 2 years, i also own a ROSS Stereo delay pedal and a DOD FX13 Gonkulator. If this thing were stolen.. i would track down the guy and hit him with it.. but if that failed, yeah sure id buy another. I love some of the crazy sounds you can make, good for f**cking about and impressing your friends. Favourite feature would beeeeee.... all of it.. lovely little device. Only thing i hate is the harshness of mode 2, you could break glass playing high notes.
Nup, no comparison.. this is a fairly unique phaser, for something warmer i would buy a MXR Phase 90 .. (i probably will sometime in the future).
I Dont really wish it had anything, its pretty solid, maybe a presence knob to add tone?
This thing could only help you make music, great to experiment with.
Anyone considering buying this thing test it in the store.. you will either love it or hate it, it only serves a certain genre of music.

Unlike most of the others here, I WASN'T looking for an Incubus sound, I just wanted a nice, lush phase effect. Unfortunately, this pedal doesn't cut it. There is a dramatic loss of bass tones when it's on, and there's a lot of swirling background noise (hiss) that totally ruins the sound when played w/o distortion. It will get you all of those funky Incubus sounds, but it's far from a "vintage" phase tone.

If your main goal is to replicate the sound of another artist, this is a great pedal. But if you're also concerned about noise and tone, then I'd suggest you look elsewhere (i.e. EH Small Stone).

I use various guitars into various amps with various pedals depending on the sound I'm after. To me this thing sounds too sterile and too much like a flanger with the RES turned up. In mode II with the RES off it sounds "warmer" but not as warm or lush as a EH Small Stone, MXR Phase 90, or Maxon PT999.

25 years in the biz playing various styles of rock, punk and alternative. Pedals come and go and, for me, this one goes. But if your ears like it, use it. I prefer the EH Small Stone for a warmer, thicker sound and occasionally use the MXR Phase 90 and Maxon PT999.

I was buying a CH-1 SUPER Chorus pedal in my local guitar store when the amusing green colour caught my eye. Since I was in the market for some kind of interesting usable effect I tried it out. Within a minute I had a sound I really liked and could use. I bought it right away.

Well I mainly use a ValveState Marshall 8200 head into a standard Marshall cab for gigs or a Sessionette:75 for gigs. Sounds damn good on both of them with an acceptable signal-to-noise ratio.
Only problem is on Mode-II the Phaser takes control of the sound and all you can hear is the effect. However this doesn't matter if you use Mode-II for messing around with crazy sounds. Mode-I is great though.

It's a well-known and well-proven fact/cliche that Boss stomp boxes are the last word in reliability. If an OD-1 can last 25 years of abuse and gigs I'd be happy if this one lasts half of that.

Overall I think this pedal is very useful and fun to use. With some work you can get amusing sounds out of it and it seems able to cope with a fair amount of styles. I wouldn't be without a phaser now after owning this pedal.
If it got stolen I probably wouldn't buy another because I've got one thats just as good on my Boss GT-3.

Carvin guitars, morley wah, digitech whammy2, mxr phase90, boss ph2, boss od3, into a fender blues deville, with a digitech delay and boomerang in the loop. This thing nails that phunky Steely Dan sound from the 70's. You can get pretty extreeme, but subtle phasing is where this pedal really does well.

Overall, a great pedal, I use it with my phase 90, and have all the phasing I could ask for. I have the mxr set to a low phase, like a univibe turned all the way down, to add color, and when I kick this thing on, it really sings.

Ahh...compared to a MXR phase 90..this pedal is a little weaker, weaker in a good sence. I love the thinness of the pedal. I use it with a boss blues driver, metalzone, envelop filter, dd-5, tuner and noise supressor and the phase 90 and i use a fender stage 100 amp. The effect sounds great and dont have to worry about boosting the original sound. Yes we all know the mike einziger of incubus is probably one of my bigest influences,....hey hes great!!!

This thing is the best boss pedals i have tried (mt-2, dc-3, bf-2, ds-1, eh-2, ch-1). It is a beautiful phaser. Mode 1 is a lush, suttle phase and mode 2 is a more pronounced phase. Both are great, but i prefer mode 2. The are many sounds availiable from this box and it is easy to get the sounds of bands such as hundred reasons, smashing pumpkins and incubus to name a few.

I am using this with the following.
Tanglewood baretta jetstream -> Crybaby wah-> Marshall Guvnor->Ibanez super chorus->Boss ph-2->Danelectro pb 'n' j delay-> Marshall VS100R.
I play stuff in the vein of incubus, the smashing pumpkins and sonic youth etc. It suits my style excellently and i'm sure anyone could find a use for it. I compared it to the dano pepperoni and the small stone. This was far better than the dano and slightly better than the small stone. If i lost it i'd probably get it again if i could find on (they no longer produce it), failing that i'd get a ph-3.
