IMO the ph2 is a different type of effect to your classic 70s phasers.it sounds quite modern in a digital sort of way.if your after classic squishy phase 90/small stone/ph1(r) sounds get a phase 90 or small stone or ph1(r) .This is a very different beast.
Personally i wasnt keen on it on the whole but its great on synths and for really bendy synthy guitar sounds a la Korn especially mode 2.
mode 1 is a bit more normal phaser but still very modern sounding and a touch generic.
mode 2 is good for reggae and funk sounds and for the sounds of that guy from incubus as mentioned in other reviews.
overall id say it sounds good and should be seen as a different type of effect altogether instead of a substitute for a 70s phaser.

I play either a Les Paul or EC Strat through the PS-2, Tube screamer and to a jcm 800 Marshall. I never cared for the mode 2 sound and only recently fell in love with mode 1 after performing the "white pot mod" talked about in previous reviews. Once this mod is performed the mode 2 is toast, but the mode 1 is fantastic. Minimal tone sapping, gives back the bass and adds a touch of glassy highs.
Speed at 1 -2 o'clock, Depth at 9 o'clock and Resonance at 0.
I turned the white pot setting only slightly from 1:00 to 2:00.

It's pretty easy, manual not necessary. this is a Japanese black label- I don't know the year its in average shape- some paint knocked off the edges. I bought this two years ago for $45 from my luthier. He repaired my ce-2 for $35 and I was floored. He knew I was into black label Boss pedals and fixed this one up.

metal/blues/heavy blues/prog. Playing since 1979. rig =Strat Hwy 1 & Dean Explorer> Cry Baby> Boss Tuner> FAB d-1> Ibanez turbo tube screamer>Boss hm-2> Ibanez fl-9> Ibanez ad-9> Boss ce-2> Boss ph-2> Boss noise gate> Furman pedal board> Randall RG100sc/combo/212 cab. This pedal is different, it reminds me of the phaser in that song, "who's that-a- lady" (Isley Bros?)it's real thin, wispy like a flanger with alot of regeneration. The intro to "lightning crashes" by Live is another good example. This is not a subtle pedal and will hamper your tone a bit. It's good for clean picking and light strumming but with anything heavy or with distortion it's a little over-bearing. The mode II is like mode I but more in your face and tone sapping. It has this funny eeeawwwerrrrra sound ( I tried) that will happen when you hit certain notes that's pretty cool.

I think this pedal is widely misunderstood. Unlike the classic rock phasers of the 70s, the Phase90, Small Stone, even the Boss PH-1, which are all 4 stage phasers, the PH-2 is a 12 stage phaser. 12 stages produce a somewhat artificial sounding 'in your face' tone that overbears your signal. Simply put, this phaser isn't really made for rock. It's for funk, reggae and similar or experimental styles. If you want a phaser that doesn't touch your tone but makes a subtle whoosh while you strum a few chords look elsewhere. If you want a crazy phaser that makes your guitar indistinguishable when it's switched on it's one of the cheapest you can buy.
However I'm mostly posting this review to warn other users against tweaking an internal trimpot in the effect, which some reviews have recommended doing to introduce more bass into the effect. Out of curiosity I decided to give it a go, thinking if I didn't like the results I could always set it back to how it was initially set. The tweak did introduce a fraction more bass into the effect, not enough that anyone who hates the effect would suddenly love it, but what was not mentioned in any of the reviews encouraging me to mess with my pedal was that my pedal would develop a momentary rushing whoosh that would sound each time the pedal was turned on - no more silent FET switching. Not liking this side-effect I tried to set the trimpot back where it was, but the pedal continues it's new whoosh regardless of where the trimpot is set - ie it's permanent. It was only after the fact that I learned that Boss pedal really do not like having their trimpots tweaked. Many a DM-2/DM-3 have been ruined by people mistakenly believing that Boss were hiding an extra 100ms of delay in these pedals, that could be accessed by simply turning a trimpot. These pedals are usually set by an oscilloscope, and once moved need to be reset on one. Perhaps other reviewer's pedals did not develop the annoying side-effect my pedal did, but I urge any owners thinking of tweaking the trimpot to reconsider as my pedal is now impossible to switch on mid song given the noise made. Tweaking the trimpot wont turn it into a PH-1R. It barely changes it. If you're on the fence about this pedal this won't bring you over. Better to just sell it.

I quite like this phaser. There are a lot of boring 4 stage phasers out there and this one doesn't sound remotely like them, so it's commendable on those grounds alone. I also have a Boss PH-1R which is more conventional, or an everyday or workhorse phaser. The PH-2 requires a bit more imagination and creativity to use. It's a pretty unique sound in the sub $50 price range. A Moog no doubt sounds better but it'll also cost you over $200 new.

I found this pedal to be very generic bland and boring as in "ya that's a phaser alright."It doesn't have any flavor of its own just like boss overdrives and distortions. I've owned a number of phasers eg maestro, univox, SIB fazedelic and Ibanez PH7>the PH7 sounds a 100 times better and can be had just as cheaply.

This is a great pedal with my favorite classic phaser sound in it. I also own a Boss Ph-3 and i'll say this thing is way better than that. It has such a rich phaser sound to it. I use one on my distortion amp to get a low end type feel with the resolution and depth knob set low to get a really cool tone. Then i have one with my clean amp to get a rich phaser sound.

Getting a good sound is as hard as you make it; if you have a clear idea of what you want, you can find it within a few minutes. The only confusing part is the resonance knob, which blends effected signal back into the second IC of the pedal. It tends to thicken the sound and deepen the sweep, but gets really boomy really fast and can make your speaker sound like it's being sick. The mode switch selects between six and twelve phase stages.

I bought this pedal because I love Thurston Moore's tone on "The Diamond Sea". He uses a 1970 Ludwig Phase II, the second rarest effect pedal ever with a $5,000 price tag. Since I knew that was out of the running, I just went for the cheapest alternative that offered 12-stage phasing. I use it with a Fender Duo-Sonic and Mustang, right before an EH Big Muff and a PV Bandit of Fender Bassman. The effect is very obvious and intense, which is exactly what I wanted. It tends to mask what you're playing with a wall of "WA-WA-WA". I personally like it, even the whooshy noise that comes through when you're not playing anything, but it won't be to everyone's taste. If you want 70s phasing, buy a Small Stone. If you're looking for something different, get this.

It's Boss. HOWEVER, this thing is not a simple circuit and has a 150+ part count that includes several ICs. There is ample reverse polarity and over-voltage protection built in, but it is still not going to be as resilient as a DS-1 or other simple effect. It has worked fine so far.

I play free jazz and avant-garde music. This is a good match because it sounds unconventional yet good. I set it to be an imitation of the guitar sound at the beginning of "The Diamond Sea" and have found it to be very inspirational. It makes everything I play sound a little alien and unique. I would never use it for everything, but it's fun to have once in a while. I use it clean to add some stutter to different parts and with distortion to make some noise parts a little more flavorful. If it was stolen, I would buy another or maybe splurge on a Mu-tron Bi-Phase; I've discovered that I like phasing a lot more then I thought I would.

As much as I generally dislike Boss stuff (apart from a few of their early pedals) I think that the PH2 is pretty good.
Whilst it will not do that chewy, 70s vintage type phasing, it is fantastic for over-the-top reggae/dub comping (especially in mode II), and for badass disco/jazz-funk rhythm playing.

Easy enough. The rate controls how fast the phase is. The depth controls how deep the phase and the resolution makes it sound like crap if you turn it up too high. There's two different modes of phase w/ mode one being the milder more usable one and two being the more extreme one.
The low score I'm giving in this catagory is not because it's complicated or difficult to you but because it's hard to get classic phase sounds out of it. It takes a ton of tweaking to really get something that's useful other than as an amusing oddity.
Sound Quality
:
5
As far as I can tell, mode two is basically useless. It sounds tinny and thin, the phase garbles your playing and just generally saps every ounce of low end out of your signal. Fun for noise but definitely not very musical.
Mode one gets some usable tones especially w/ the depth and resolution set below twelve O'clock but the best sounds I get are w/ the rate really high like a vibrato but even then it's not really great due to low-end suckage.
Really, I just think this thing tries to do to much and the folks at Boss needed to make it w/ a less broad range of sounds that were actually good rather than a million kind of cummy ones.

This just plain isn't a serious phaser. In the end, it's a fun toy if you're just starting out w/ a little practice amp and want to know what phase is like or if you want to crank the knobs to make ear splitting noise (always fun) but if you want to get those classic, thick phase sounds you need to get those pedals (Small stone, Phase 90, some of the boutique stuff) even if that means buying more than one.

Well, it's not awesome - I prefer analog for all uses and purposes. But I use mode II exclusively ahead of the amp with all controls at about 1/3 up (10 or 11 o'clock). I had to set one of the ajustment pots inside the unit to obtain this crazy thick saturated phaser sound which no combination of analog gear could produce. It's really the only awesome sound I could get out of this but it has found a way to stay in my all analog, all-tube rig. It's generally looped out, but when I need to make some serious ear damage...I love this pedal.

Ok heres the thing. I really don't like this Phaser. when you step on the pedal, alot of the bass gets cut off and all you're left with is a hissy, treble-y effect with very little of your original sound coming through. Mode two is almost unbearable on your ears, as it adds even more noise. It's like having an oscillating EQ pedal that goes around and around in a nauseating swirling motion, but it never touches upon any of the settings you like. The only setting I could slightly deal with is:
mode 1
rate at 2:00
depth maxed
res at 0

I'm still searsing for a nice Phaser pedal that
1) allows the original signal to come through
2) doesn't cut alot of bass
3) subtle but rich
The Small Stone with mods is probably the way to go. The stock version is very watery and rich, but it cuts too much treble and has a little too mch effect and not enough dry.
Maybe I'll try the PH-1r and see if it lives up to it's subtle analog rep.

Not impressed at all by the Super Phaser. I've owned and played many phasers, and this one simply doesn't cut it for me. It's not versatile and has a very thin sound. It's unique that way I guess, and some people like it's sound - it reminds me of Incubus. My rig:
Gtr: Schecter C1+ with Duncans. FX: Boss MT-2, CE-5, stored in BCB-3 along with this PH-2.
I got this New Old Stock from eBay, because I wanted to get a BOSS phaser. I bought the new digital PH-3 pedal and that sucked horribly. This is better, but it still feels like it's missing something. It doesn't eat your tone like the PH-3 did, but it's still hard to find a sweet spot that's not too over-the-top yet still sounds like something. Turning the Resonance control down helps.
Yet I still feel like there's no great middle sound that would work with both clean and distortion, the way you can throw in an MXR Phase 90. This pedal is not "chewy" as somebody put it. Yet it still makes some cool sounds. If you hate the PH-3, don't rule this one out. You can still get them on eBay, though because some guy from
Incubus uses one, every time they pop up there's 15 bids. I like this pedal. I think it's a keeper.
According to www.bossarea.com, Mode I (the one you can actually use in songs) is a 10-stage phaser (like an MXR Phase 100, and I've always liked that sound.) Mode II (the one you use to torture small animals) is a 12-stage phaser. Mode II hurts your brain. Even though the newer PH-3 has this "step" mode, and people think it's a cool noise box (said that myself, actually...) this pedal makes REAL noise in Mode II, practically unlistenable, good for making your singer shutup in the middle of a bandfight.
My wife (who's practically tone-deaf) said, "It sounds very '80s". I'm not sure what she meant, since Flanging and Delay are more '80s, but there it is, right from the people whose opinions we fear most: non-musicians.

This isn't bad. I may never find the perfect phaser. I like this one. It does what it's supposed to, and it fits in my BOSS-only pedalboard. Sometimes, when you get drunk and buy stuff on eBay, you score. I count this as a win. Five scotches, one "Buy It Now!"....
Hey! Forgot to mention! The color is MUCH better than the PH-3. The PH-2 is like a Tube Screamer green.
I'm sure you're convinced now. I still have an Ibanez PT-9, which is much more organic sounding, but a little weak by comparison. Nobody's built a phaser that makes me totally happy. In the end, this is what I've come up with, I think. The CE-5 is my ultimate chorus, though.

This is an update to my earlier review a few years ago. I had been using this pedal mostly in ModI for pretty strong Phasing. But I really wanted to capture the MXR Phase 90 EVH tone so I was going to buy one of those to do that. No matter what I tried it just was too strong of Phase tone, it needed to be more subtle to sound like early EVH. I even started using a blend box to get there which did a really good job. However, I just stumbled onto a setting that is really close and requires no blend box. First, put is before your distortion, yeah, thats how Eddie did it in the old days since he used his Marshall for distortion. Here are the settings to use [MODE I, Rate 2oclock, Depth 8oclock, Res fully counterclockwise]
Thats it, very simple. The key points are the Depth very low, almost off, and the Res turned off, and the box being placed BEFORE distortion/OD in the signal chain.

i am using a Agile guitar into a fender blues jr. with only a couple other pedals. The noise is only heard if u put ur head up to the speaker on mode 2 and if your using it with distortion (but that isnt this pedals fault, its the distortion).
Mode 1: Warm, subtle phase that is closer to the sound of the MXR Phase 90(but not quite there). I would have bought it if it only came with this setting so thats saying something about its quality. It isnt good for any slow rising phase because it isnt really thick enough but its really good for medium to really fast phases. If u turn the RATE know all the way up it will sound like a cool sounding vibrato too.
Mode 2: This is probably the reason most people buy this pedal. It is a very trebly but thick phase that is best suited for slow phases. If you turn the RES and DEPTH knobs all the way up and the RATE all the way down it sounds REALLY good. You could use it for fast phases if you wanted a more obvious, pronounced phase as well.
Overall it sounds really good but honestly, if you want a vintage sounding phaser, you should get the MXR Phase 90 or the EHX Small Stone. Its good for what it does.

i play alternative rock and jazz. This pedal is a very good match for these styles and would be good for other things like reggae and blues too. i have been playing for 4 years and i would definatly buy it again although i dont think i would ever need to as mentioned before. my favorite thing about is the two different modes and my least favorite part is the extreme treblyness on mode 2 which is why i didnt give it a 10. I did wish it had all the features of the Digitech Hyper phase but with the SUPER PHASER sound quality. Hopefully that will happen with the PH-4...IM not saying im in any way disapointed though.

I play a huge variety of music so this fit in here and there- but I also make it work in a few other places as well. Both modes sound great to me. The only other phase pedal I like better or as well as this one is an oldie (Nady Phase Shifter PS-019)But those are impossible to find anymore. The only reason I gave it a 9 instead of 10 is because i had to adjust the trim pot. To bad it wasnt already done like that for me.

Great! Two modes is definitely a plus, and they are VERY distinct. It's like having 2 phasers in one. Mode 1 is more lush and deep, with quite a bit of range. It's more the "typical" phaser sound. Mode 2 is very trebly and metallic sounding. With a lot of distortion, Mode 2 can get some crazy, sweeping, almost filter-like sounds. Mode 2 is best when the rate is set very slow.
It's not as lush and deep as a phase 90, but that's a totally separate effet. If you want a phase 90 sound, get a phase 90, but it's not near as versatile as this one.

This pedal is perfect, especially for the price they sell for on ebay. I admit it, I got this because it's essential to play Incubus songs accurately. Mikey even owns two of these, and I can see why. If that's all you want it for, to play Incubus songs in your bedroom or whatever, even to just play a cover or two by Incubus, get this effect-it's A LOT of fun! You can dial in your own unique sounds too of course.

i've been having some issues with it here. granted, i haven;t tried the trim pot mod yet, but it's only really noticable in the effects loop of my amp (traynor YCV40) and it's too wet in the loop. however, that's great for doing really extreme phaser sounds. it can also do a reasonable leslie sound, but it's nothing to write home about. as oit is now, it does the incubus phase sound very well and wacky noises even better. i'm still trying to get a warm, vintage-ish sound from it, but like i said, i haven't tried the mod yet

It's a very basic setup. The unit has four knobs, two modes, one input jack and one output jack, and a power supply input (see photo).
If you're familiar with phasing, you shouldn't have a hard time figuring this one out. Regardless, if you're an audiophile, or have sensitive ears, tread lightly. This phaser can achieve some (not to sound trite) extreme sounds, biting to the ear, which is why I consider this my "experimental" phaser.
I do not have the manual for the PH-2. My unit has not been upgraded.

I currently use a (laugh all you want) Fender Mexican Fat Strat into a Peavey Special 212 II amp.
Since I use a Boss NS-2 (gate), I get no background noise from this pedal. However, when the signal is not suppressed, this pedal gives off blatant background noise (especially on Mode 2, as well as any setting with high "Res"). The use of a noise gate with this pedal is highly recommended!
The effects are anything but weak. While I would say this phaser is generally more aggressive than mellow, it can produce a good variety. Let's discuss:
Mode 1
While I bought this pedal out of curiosity for Mode II, Mode I was a pleasant surprise. When my guitar/amp is set to a nice clean setting, I usually set the rate and depth a little past halfway, and the Res a little before, and I have a nice mellow setting (for Incubus-heads, think "Stellar"). If I bump up the rate, it actually achieves a very nice, rather smooth vibrato, adequate for reggae. One final thought, the PH-2's Mode I (on a balanced setting) is excellent with distortion. I expected it to swallow the sound, but it gave it just a little bit of edge, impressive.
Mode 2
Here's where this thing's character shows. This is where you'll love it or hate it. As mentioned before, this is my "experimental" phaser, and this mode is where the experimenting takes place. In a nutshell, Mode II takes the sound from the "woo-aa-oww" of Mode I to a more piercing "waa-eee-aoww". I've achieved some nice, weird sounds. With the Rate way back, and the Depth and Res maxed, you get that slow rising effect that culminates into that overblown, almost harmonic-driven phase (the "Incubus" thing). Recently, I discovered with the Rate and Depth at 0, and the Res maxed, I achieved a very hollow, biting, transistor-esque sound. It's all a matter of opinion, but I was very pleased with both modes (for my needs anyway).
As for artists using it (besides Incubus): Orgy, Sister Hazel, Ivy, Disturbed, Korn, Echo Orbiter, Charlatans, Spineshank, Bethany Curve, The Cure, Godsmack, Limp Bizkit, and Tahiti 80.

I am a big fan of Boss' compact pedal construction. Hey, if those vintage effects fans still drop $175+ on those overrated DM-2's and DM-3's that look like dogs chewed them up, the construction must be good.
I would confidently gig without a backup. Take care of your pedals!

I play a good mix of styles, predominantly ska/reggae (e.g. Reel Big Fish, RX Bandits), to modern rock (Our Lady Peace, Incubus), and even some more experimental stuff (Radiohead, MUSE). While the PH-2 can achieve a decent reggae-appropriate vibrato in Mode I's higher Rate settings, I use this pedal for more modern/experimental rock.
I've been playing for about 3 years, but have had experience with quite a few phaser units. No one cares what gear I use, but I will say that the PH-2 is a nice, aggressive complement to my very mellow, smooth Digitech XHP Hyper Phase pedal (the shining gem of the X-Series).
If it were stolen or lost, and I had the means, I would buy another as soon as I could.
I love that this is the most satisfied I've been out of my, well-it's-discontinued-and-I-heard-it's-pretty-good-and-I-might-not-see-another-one-so-I-might-as-well-buy-it ventures. This is actually the most satisfied I've been with any pedal, it's a great buy if you're looking to add add a more outstanding phase to your sound.
There's only one feature I wish it had: a footswitch! The two modes are so different yet so useable. And since I'm not going to by two (which some people have -- you're not Incubus!), I hope to be able to get it modified so I could switch modes hands-free. Other than that, I was very satisfied.
It doesn't help me make music, but it doesn't get in the way. It spices things up when you need it. It does exactly what I hoped it would...I was very satisfied!

I either use it with very soft phasing or very harsh. I occasionally use it on very harsh phase when I make noise through my guitar during certain parts of a song. I use phase when I just need some color in chord work. I also like using it for a few seconds during some parts of certain songs, then turn it off right away. It's not too transparent, it is knida noisy.

The sound on this is tops. I use a '92 Gibson Les Paul Studio and an mid-90s Mexican Fender Strat, and play through a variety of amps, including Marshalls and Fenders. With both guitars it creates a lush sweeping sounds great for all types of music.
I've owned this pedal for about five years, and just today I discovered a previous reviewer who talked about looking under the main board and turning the white trim pot. I tinkered with that a little bit and found that, as that guy said, it gives a much fuller bodied sound. I would recommend doing this to your pedal if you find that when activated, the pedal sounds too trebley -- That's why I did it. (If I rated this before, I probably would have only given the pedal an 8 or 9).
Caution: Just make sure not to bend any wires inside or bump anything around too much. There's one wide set of wires that connects the board to the pedal frame that you may worry about bending, but it was perfectly sturdy enough to bend up so you can turn the white plastic knob.

I've been playing for about 8 years now and have been playing rock, jazz, funk, fusion, techno (not with a guitar), alternative rock, etc. and this pedal works well for everything. It thickens the tone when it might normally be thin. Regarding the techno, I've run drum loops and some of my synthesizers throught this green box, and it can definately make some awesome sounds. There aren't any features I hate, but I never use mode '2' that much. It seems to make the center frequency (that the sweep is concentrated around) a little too high pitched and even biting at times, but I do just great using mode '1', which delivers a nice frequency sweep for lower frequency playing, like rhythm parts.
When I was buying, I was considering other Boss effects like the BF-2 flanger, and one of the Boss chorus pedals. After trying all of them out, I decided that this phaser had the thickest tone and the most versatility, as it can create chorus-ish sounds, sounds good for chord work, cutoff frequency type effects, etc. If it were stolen I would replace it for sure (given that I have the cash).

I get great sounds out of this phaser. It's totally different from the the MXR, but it's a good thing. Having a classic phaser and a newer, more metallic sounding phaser in my setup really has increased my possibilities. It does get a little noisy when I have the DS-1 on with it, but so does my MXR, so no real complaint here. I am a HUGE Incubus fan and it is no problem getting Einziger's sound out of this phaser. If I lost it, or it was stolen, I would definitely try to find another one. Like I said, I have an MXR phaser and this Boss one, and while they are totally different sounds, they are both great. I decided to add phaser number 2 to my setup to try and get a diverse sound, the MXR is sometimes a little to warm for what I want to play. If you are looking for a more modern phase sound, you should pick this one up if you can find one, Boss doesn't make these anymore.

Deluxe Amercian Standard Strat, PH-2, MXR Phase 90, Dunlop Crybaby (standard), Fender Twin Reverb Amp; Rickenbacker bass, PH-2, Peavey TNT 160 Amp.
This pedal is a little tricky. About 75% of this pedal's range is very effect heavy. I find that my tone gets really bogged down if I turn the dials past 12 oclock. Mode II is, to me, almost useless for guitar and rarely useful on bass. It's just too thick, the sound of your instrument is completely lost, you just get effect. That said, in Mode I you can get excellent phase tones if you don't get carried away with the knobs. With all three knobs set at about 10 o'clock, you get a warm smooth phase that still sounds like a guitar, and I have not necessarily heard a better one. I use it for all kinds of funk stuff, and my band-mates seem to be happy with the sound. If you want to play around with out-there, water-in-outer-space sound effects, you can certainly dial that in as well, but your band-mates will scowl at you. Plug your bass in with the dials set at 12 oclock for a gpretty funky bass effect you can actually use.

I generally play a Meters-funk/funky R&B with hip-hop feel kind of a thing. Few covers, occasionally Chameleon or anything from the Meters song-book. I like to make songs sound like me instead of trying to sound like the song, and I have found that I can use this pedal for virtually anything if I don't get carried away with the dials. I'll use it instead of flange (never felt like I needed one with this pedal), and occasionally in lieu of wah or envelop filter, just to give a song like Burning of the Midnight Lamp a little different feel. When used right this pedal is great, but until you get a feel for it, you may actually hate it. The effect can get so thick that you feel like you can't dial out of it. Just don't get carried away and you'll get great sound every time.

Good sounds from this thing, Ive got an Epiphone LP Standard through a marshall VS100, sounds good on any of the 3 channels clean dirty or reall really really distorted. Can get kinda harsh on mode 2 if youre playing really high notes as it tends to bring out the treble sounds more. Good for incubus stuff (yeah i know.. i bought it cause mikey has one.. shut up now) but you could just as easily mess with it and experiment, you can get a ton of sounds from it. Pedal sounds really good with a little tinge of distortion.

If this thing were stolen.. i would track down the guy and hit him with it.. but if that failed, yeah sure id buy another. I love some of the crazy sounds you can make, good for f**cking about and impressing your friends. Favourite feature would beeeeee.... all of it.. lovely little device. Only thing i hate is the harshness of mode 2, you could break glass playing high notes.
Nup, no comparison.. this is a fairly unique phaser, for something warmer i would buy a MXR Phase 90 .. (i probably will sometime in the future).
I Dont really wish it had anything, its pretty solid, maybe a presence knob to add tone?
This thing could only help you make music, great to experiment with.
Anyone considering buying this thing test it in the store.. you will either love it or hate it, it only serves a certain genre of music.

Unlike most of the others here, I WASN'T looking for an Incubus sound, I just wanted a nice, lush phase effect. Unfortunately, this pedal doesn't cut it. There is a dramatic loss of bass tones when it's on, and there's a lot of swirling background noise (hiss) that totally ruins the sound when played w/o distortion. It will get you all of those funky Incubus sounds, but it's far from a "vintage" phase tone.

Well I mainly use a ValveState Marshall 8200 head into a standard Marshall cab for gigs or a Sessionette:75 for gigs. Sounds damn good on both of them with an acceptable signal-to-noise ratio.

Overall I think this pedal is very useful and fun to use. With some work you can get amusing sounds out of it and it seems able to cope with a fair amount of styles. I wouldn't be without a phaser now after owning this pedal.
If it got stolen I probably wouldn't buy another because I've got one thats just as good on my Boss GT-3.

Carvin guitars, morley wah, digitech whammy2, mxr phase90, boss ph2, boss od3, into a fender blues deville, with a digitech delay and boomerang in the loop. This thing nails that phunky Steely Dan sound from the 70's. You can get pretty extreeme, but subtle phasing is where this pedal really does well.

Ahh...compared to a MXR phase 90..this pedal is a little weaker, weaker in a good sence. I love the thinness of the pedal. I use it with a boss blues driver, metalzone, envelop filter, dd-5, tuner and noise supressor and the phase 90 and i use a fender stage 100 amp. The effect sounds great and dont have to worry about boosting the original sound. Yes we all know the mike einziger of incubus is probably one of my bigest influences,....hey hes great!!!

This thing is the best boss pedals i have tried (mt-2, dc-3, bf-2, ds-1, eh-2, ch-1). It is a beautiful phaser. Mode 1 is a lush, suttle phase and mode 2 is a more pronounced phase. Both are great, but i prefer mode 2. The are many sounds availiable from this box and it is easy to get the sounds of bands such as hundred reasons, smashing pumpkins and incubus to name a few.

I am using this with the following.
Tanglewood baretta jetstream -> Crybaby wah-> Marshall Guvnor->Ibanez super chorus->Boss ph-2->Danelectro pb 'n' j delay-> Marshall VS100R.
I play stuff in the vein of incubus, the smashing pumpkins and sonic youth etc. It suits my style excellently and i'm sure anyone could find a use for it. I compared it to the dano pepperoni and the small stone. This was far better than the dano and slightly better than the small stone. If i lost it i'd probably get it again if i could find on (they no longer produce it), failing that i'd get a ph-3.

This unit is easy to get goods sounds out of it only if you know what you want. That's what I like about stompboxes as oppossed to rack effects, they make you work a little bit but utimtely you find a unique sound or your trouble.Boss make great pedals that usually have four knobs that really give you alot of options.

I got this thing because of mike Eniziger's(INCUBUS) playing and I thought there was something wrong with it becaue the battery light would only light up full red in certian sequences in my chain. It seemed to have a overly metalic sound that I didn't really like at first untill I discovered it's potential using this unique phase sound. I also have a MXR phase 100 pedal in my chain which is real warm and subtle and I was gonna get rid of the PH-2 untill I realized all the sounds I loved and couldn't figure out from Incubus' albums "make yourself" and "morning View" were created using this thing. The break down in "The warmth" where the guitar freaks out in harmonic overtones is mode 2 with depth and res cranked and the rate at about 7 or 8 o'clock. It's also used for the metallic haze sound for the guitar break in "wish you were here" Pretty much the same settings but the rate is faster. I was amazed when I captured the sounds exact. "Nice to know you" intro is mode 1 rate 1 o'clock, depth at about 12 or 1 with some delay and volume knob manipulation. This is why he has two of these things in his rig, there is great sounds on both mode 1 and two for those who look for them and tweak it to perfection

Overall it is invaluable in my signal chain for the flexibility it provides. Once you find the cool effects it provides you may spend a little time bending down to change them on the fly but there real easy to remember and the mode switch is like two different worlds of tone.Or you have to get two set differently, which is kind of a bummer so I just change it before a song beings.Just remember if you want this thing, nothing is cool right out of the box, maybe we as guitar player's think we'll buy effects plug em in and i will make us sound great but you have to put some work in to it to find the hidden tones(boss pedals are great for that)And also this pedal is kind of a specialized type of phaser in that it has some great sounds but it is not a be all end type of deal. I need the MXR Phase 100 in my rig for a more tradional sounding phase that is smooth and subtle. The Super Phaser is far from that, in that it is astrongsoundineffect. I would suggest to listen to the aforementioned Incubus songs to hear it in action becauseyou can get those tones exact with it with some tweaking.

i run a gibson les paul or a epiphone chet atkins sst thru a boss ds1 distortion, oc2 octave, ibanez de7 delay/echo, boss rv3 reverb delay, 2 ph2 phasers(been listening to too much incubus), small stone, ce3 chorus, mxr blue box, ns2 noise gate, proco rat, into a line6 flextone xl with an extra 2x12 cabinet.
certain pedals come in and out of the chain depending on what im playing like the bluebox/noise gate, or the excessive amount of phasers. i have a phase 90 too but i dont play with it that much. actually one ph2 phaser is plenty.. you can get many many cool sounds out of a phaser and a chorus.. actually having two phasers set at different rates gives you some really cool phasing effects. really one doesnt need that many coloring effects but i think this is easily one of the better phasers. you have lots of control over the length and amplitude of the wave, it is easy to set, and really responsive. theres a wide range of sounds that you can get from one of these babys. This is a great phaser, its a plus that its reasonably priced. id say the small stone sounds a bit richer but you have lots more control from the ph2. if youre gonna get a phaser, i think this is a really affordable and good phaser. Also .. this pedal is quite quiet. i get little hiss from the pair of ph2's.

If i lost this. id try to buy another one. as far as making music goes, i tend to try making music without any effects, when making music, i tend more to play with the knobs than write good songs.
this is a good buy. my favorite phaser. good stuff.

I have had many pedals and boss are the best or one of the best. They never come up short. I have noticed if you buy like a piece of junk pedal such as a danelectro mini pedal. You might complain that a distortion pedal hardly has enough distortion if you vary from heavy tones to mild crunch. With any boss pedal you can get a variation of tones. I got i great deal on mine only 45 dollars because it was the one the store had on display.

As phasers go, this one is beautiful. I like using this with "stringy" synth patches and toy keyboards- very Charlie's Angels. I've used it with guitars, vocals, drums, pretty much anything. It's fun. A lot of studio reverbs and delays just don't do phasing quite like this one.

I would highly suggest not using this with a heavy distortion. I think through a decent tube amp and usually a guitar with the neck pickup on it sounds killer. (I know this is very dependant on the guitar) but the ones I tried it out on the bridge pu (both singles and humbuckers) sounded rather thinish. I really got into phase because of Mike Einziger of Incubus. I understand he has one. I really dont wish to replicate his tone-- but it is pretty easy to get your own out of the box.

I play a jazzy rock fusion thing really. It works really really well on an acoustic. I think it is quite versitile and very high sound quality. I forgot to mention previously, the thing has 2 modes mode one is very warm smooth, its kind of flowing-- more so than mode two. Mode two has an MXRish tone that is way to digital sounding. But overall i think it is a stellar buy. The best sound ive gotten out of it was at my church. We plugged it into a DI box and my Ibanez Acoustic (yes, i know- ibanez, this guitar has a great tone though!) and it sounded sooo warm through the house PA.

i play alternative melodic rock and this pedal really enhances the sound of some of our more mellow acoustic songs. it actually belongs to our drummer but if he lost it id buy myself one if he wasnt going to. ive been playing about 8 years and have previously owned one very tinny fender frontman amp, 2 multi effects units, a dunlop crybaby which i sold during a period of apparent insanity (im now looking to buy another one) and a cheap ibanez strat copy. im much happier with my current setup! (apart from the wah)
this pedal does wonders for the acoustic but i dont use it much with my electric, although it is cool for soloing.

I love this pedal. It's definitely my favorite modulation pedal. For me, it added a large new spectrum of sounds to my guitar arsenal. You can use it as a thick wavy phasing sound, or a very deep flanger. Personally I use this as a flanger more than I use my actual flanger. I generally do not use it with my distortion, but it sounds stellar with a delay. To give you a good idea of what this pedal sounds like, I'd pick up a copy of Incubus' "Make Yourself" if I were you. You can play songs ranging from "The Warmth" to "Nowhere Fast" to "Pardon Me" and make them sound exactly like the recording. This pedal fits with many different styles of music. I love this pedal and will always keep it im my setup.

I've set it up against DOD, Dunlop, Danelectro, Ibanez, and other various phasers, and this is my favorite. If it were stolen or lost, I would definitely replace it. My only wish is that its rate knob was a little less sensitive. Other then that, it's an amazing pedal.

It gives a high pitched sound at high settings, and it gets to ya after a while. Other than that, the sound is great. I use Mode I more than Mode II, but Mode II has it's place.

I use a Shecter C-1 guitar with a Fender Princton Chorus and this pedal worked great with them. If the volume is loud there is the sound of the phaser going but thats no big deal for me. I turn the depth all the way up so i always get good sound. If you put it on the second setting it gets more into funk. This pedal is perfect for Incubus. I know the guitarist from Incubus uses one too. If you put this effect with distortion it intensifies the effect which is really nice for some sounds. If it is on the second setting it gets pretty ratty which i dont like but i know some people might.

The trick is to learn the settings and when to use the thing! MXR phasors are good too, they'er more subtle. But in my opinion, the Boss PH-2 gives me good BOING for the buck! This pedal gives me a lot of noise when i'm not playing, it may be my cheap gear but it's annoying. This pedal is good when used sparingly, with the settings rolled back it does a good job at adding a little ambience to chords and an almost envelope filter like personality to a solo. If you turn the knobs up on this thing it sounds like a toy and you lose pretty much all of the original tone, it gets hard to even make out the notes you are playing because all you can hear is the effect. Used right this is a good pedal, it's just one you probably wont use very often unless you're looking for some really weird sounds.

Overall this pedal is a good toy, i bought it on impulse and i got pretty much what i expected out of it. It is fun to sit in your bedroom and see what kind of weird shit you can get it to do but i probably wont ever really use it for much more than some light settings on open chords for a little bit of a chorus sound. and i might not even do that unless i get rid of some the background noise this thing makes. If it got stolen i wouldn't really worry because it's really not a necessary pedal, for me at least.

i use a squier by fender standard p-bass special thru a boss ODB-3 thru the PH-2 super phaser then into a yorkville BM-200 bass amp. like all pedals you do get noise, but you can't hear it when you are playing, theres always the background *swoosh* when your not playing though. the effects on this pedal are VERY strong, the only reason i give it an 9 is because on the low E string and some times but hardly ever the A string is a bit muddy and the effect isn't that strong on them, but its still great. i have alot of favorite artists, but i mostly play my own stuff and make wierd noises when i use the overdrive before the phaser, if you turn the rate and the depth knobs all the way up you get a really liquidy and trippy sound *COOL!!!!* if you have the depth at 3/4's to hte max and the rate at half, you get a smooth flanger type sound that is also cool. the effect that this pedal gives is a kick ass effect, never tried it on guitar, just on bass, since thats what i play

i play blink 182 type punk music, alternative, rock, ska, and sometimes hardcore like slipknot. i've been playing for just little over a year now. i own a squier by fender standard p-bass special, a boss ODB-3 bass overdrive, and a boss PH-2 super phaser, and a yorkville BM-200 bass amp. if it were lost or stolen i would DEFFINETLY buy another one since its the only phaser i have tried i probably wouldn't get a different one. i love the colour of it, slime green, it has nice clear, smooth effects that are strong 90% of the time, the mode knob is also cool, mode 1 is a kind of less bass more treble sound with screaming highs and low bass, mode 2 has BIG bass to it and less high end. my favorite feature is hte smooth liquidy flanger type sound i can get out of it while playing chords on my bass. like i said in the paragraph above, this is hte only phaser i have tried and bought it within 10 minutes of being in the store. i bought this pedal because i was selling my 20 watt bass amp, and i was looking at the pedals since that is my goal for now, and i saw the phaser at a cheap price of $79.95, i traded my bass amp + $25 on top for it after i tried it on a bass they had there so i wouldn't be wasting my money if it didn't work. i kinda wish it had a little more range in the mid-section of the depth so it would sound like a long, slow flanger. it helps my music ALOT, and it sure doesn't get in the way of my music, it gives my old boring songs which i wrote a little more beef to it. one thing i would say if you are looking at this category of effects is, buy this pedal, its worth the money, no matter how much you pay for it, it helps give your music more body, and alreayd existing songs a cool tone as well...

My setup: various guitars all w/ humbuckers -> TS-9 -> Carvin X-50B 50w tube head -> effects loop: PH-2 phaser -> DD-3 delay -> PQ-4 param eq -> power amp ->Marshall 4x12 cab.
I play in a hard rock / blues rock cover band and was looking for a phaser to do songs like Live: Lightning Crashes, Rush: Fly By Night, etc. Although the basic sound of the PH-2 is very good and tuneable, it didn't quite have the sound I was looking for. It's a bit too intense in the upper frequency registers and sounds too "processed" and there's no way to tune that out because the both the depth & res controls affect the entire frequency spectrum. Needs to be a bit "mellower" in the upper ranges. Other than that it sounds great, no noise and a wide range of sounds from barely noticeable to an intenses, creamy "swoosh".

I just want to testify as to how rad it is to use this phaser w/ cheap keyboards! Most of the comments here are guitar heavy (understandably) but when looking to buy, I was interested in how this thing would handle not only my guitar but also the old Casios I fool around with (SA-20, CA110, etc). It does wonders. Running through the PH2, a Dan Echo pedal(or not) and my Feder Delux, I get some great expansive, rotating, spacey sounds from the cheap keys. The Phase I and II settings each offer a sound sincerely unique from the other. I have experienced no noise issues w the pedal either.

I mostly do a lot of 4-track recording. I don't spend alot on gizmos and enjoy the challenge of getting a lot of sound out of minimal equipment. When I buy, I look for versitile but uncomplicated devices. This pedal stacks up--stand alone, it sounds great on a guitar or keyboard. Throw in another favorite pedal and with the four knobs on the PH2, I find that have a great deal of texture to work with. Some have remarked that the heavy phased settings (ph II mode) are useless. It depends on what you appreciate--in this mode I can get some great stuff, kind of computery sounds (not unlike a ring modulator)from a guitar--and a keyboard, well Super Phase "Emergency Alarm" on your Casio and let your imagination wander....

Well, this gadget is some of the best in the market, Boss has improved
this phaser turning it into PH-3, however this PH-2 is still amazing,
excellent phasing sounds, from subtle ones to very deep spinning effects, you can get supersonic plane sounds, light rotary sounds and robotic sounds when combined with distortions.
it is also very quiet I play it with a fender telecaster with the next effect chain: Morley wah/volume, Boss OS-2, Danelectro Cool Cat, Boss PH-2 and Boss DD-5.
In fact I fell in love with this super phaser since the first time i tried it at a music store.

Someone has bitched up its resonance control as useless, maybe it's useless for him, I think resonace makes a great difference for the tons of sounds you can find in a phase shifter like this.

Four knobs, one of which actually selects between two modes...so ten minutes as opposed to five. Dial in a Rate and Depth you like, turn the resonance to Zero, and try not to Kill the first half hour of practice playing the same 2 power chords over and over, listening to this little booger (its green) churn and pump. It would be nice to be able to footswitch between modes one and two, but this would involve using a pedal for your pedal, and i cant bring myself to do that. The resonance knob is useless to me; anywhere over 9 o'clock produces hissy, icepick tones that really arent guitarry at all. A mix control would have suited my needs a lot better. Though its not perfect, Im not down on this pedal; like i alluded to before, its extremely easy to waste time with this unit, just twiddlin knobs and letting chords evolve on their own.

I bought this box new in 1993 so were old friends by now. Ive used it with a bunch of different gear in a wide range of situations, to say the least. Ive had several different rackmount processors, more than a couple all-on-the-floor deals, and eventually I always return to a few Boss pedals and a Combo. If i have an extra cord i put it in the FX loop, where it really shines, but on those lazy days, it sounds good in the front end too, though it needs some sort of gain boost in front of it to really get it whirring good. One bit of advice, this pedal is definitely special sauce...kick it on once or maybe twice a gig, dont plan on building a sound around it. Keeping the knobs low can give pretty smooth, almost vibrato-ey, watery sound, but its obvious this babys forte is more dramatic swooshing effects...if youre looking for over-the-top, audition this pedal. Its my understanding they (Boss) has come out with a PH-3. You may want to try that one also, or grab a PH-2 while you can...this one is assured to climb in price (Much like the RV-2 i own). Bottom line; ive seen her at her best, ive seen her at her worst.

Like I said, bought new in 93. Since then its been dropped from various heights on every imaginable surface, left in the sun, left in the snow, gotten wet, gotten soaked, had beer spilled on it, had a cat pee on it, kicked, stood on, stomped on WAY too hard, pinned with one foot while the other popped the cords out, run with power sources from 7.5v to 12v (YIKES!), thrown in the back of countless amps, fallen out of the back of most of them, and had the battery changed about 200 times. ALL of this has actually happened to this poor pedal, and it works like a champ. Not only is she ultra reliable, her replaceability brings me a lot of peace of mind. Something happens to it (jeez, hope something doesnt happen to it, huh?), i can get a brand new one in a couple of days for eighty bucks...unlike those old univibes.

Went to buy one at steves music store in montreal. tried the PH-2 Super Phaser ,turns out i was not so impressed as i thought i would be, it sounded pretty thin, more like a light wah effect so i dident buy one, i was disapointed in the sound + its not stereo and so i bought a boss Flanger instead. that aint stereo either but it sounds rich and creamy. isent that what we all want? i dident notice any annoying levels of noise.
hell could hardly notice the effect.LoL
no but seriously it was a little too subtil for me.
this pedal was tried on an ibanez guitar on a peavy 50w amp
dident get a chance to test it on synths wich could could have yielded a different review.
i would keep it if given to me.
but try it and see what YOU think, compare it with a couple of other
phasers and conclude. never decide on a pedal by a review alone! if it feels good when you play its the right one for you!
besides there is a new one out the ph 3 will try it soon.

I use a Crate GFX-120 as my amp. The entire system goes Sledghammer guitar (very nice I might add)>PH-2>Dunlop wah>Danelectro overdrive>amp. I love the ambiance of this effect, but when used with the amps distortion (which I do quite a bit) it digitizes the sound way too much. Also when used with crybaby you get some very unpleasant peaks but this is a good way to "cool" the effect off at times. With the wah pedal all the way back that is. If you want to play some hardcore funk turn the mode to "II" and let loose! Great for funk-metal.

I this pedal! I use it for both bass and guitar. My bass is like this. I either use a 1979 Gibson Grabber custom bass or a Peavey Foundation bass into a 100 watt Ampeg combo. I have a TON pedals. In order I have a Electro Harmonix Big Muff pi (great for just a touch of bass distortion),a boss bass overdrive (for heavy real heavy parts, and it is the core of my sound), a boss flanger(more melodic and melody parts, weird stuff, and w/ distortion at times), a dunlop rotovibe(same as Flanger), the pahser(same as previous 2), and a boss bass EQ(for extra low end). The phaser is geat for melody parts espically w/ the flanger. One guitar my set up is much more simple. I run either an ibanez RG or an ephiphone SG into the phaser, then to a line 6 spider combo. I use the phaser this time to similulate a old analog synth. It's great for that. Set the Rate to 2 o clock, the depth to 3 o clock, and res all the way up,and put it on mode 2. its sounds like an old analog synth w/ a bad case of osscilator drift. I usually play heavy stuff and this pedal is great for making your sound either extremly odd or really beautiful

Three knobs and a switch means that all you need to do is dink around with various combinations to get whatever sounds are possible. I recall the manual as being trite, as it should be, but the example settings are a nice thought.

Well, as a guitar effect, the only way to use it is in conjunction with some of my other time-based effects (chorus, flange, vibrato, etc) to go for a faux-Leslie sound. By itself it really isn't great. It amplifies any signal noise, but i have a noise gate at the end of my rig that helps with that. It sounds awfully digital. Too thin on the 'I' setting and the 'II' setting is too superficially whoosy. It doesn't really stick to your guitar signal worth a damn. The MXR and Small Stone are better for that.
-HOWEVER-
I use it with my Roland JX-3P synth and that's where the beauty is. For some reason i can get the pedal to actually make decent sounds when i put the synth through it. Using the PH-2 and a ring mod and some harmonizing effects i can get some nice sounds out of the keyboard. So, guitar rating; a step above very uncomfortable toilet paper: 2. Synth rating: 5

Overall: Use in a chain of other effects that don't suck if you want to get some use out of it for a guitar. Really, i would have to say it does suit my style of guitar playing in that I want a heavily effected sound sometimes, so one more box is nice. It really helps to make music on the synth, because i can take a mediocre strings patch or a mediocre brass patch and do something interesting to it. Odd noises are something i aim to make, as they inspire me to harness them and do something with them. I have a shitload of other effects that i've accrued over the past 10-12 years, so i'm not heartbroken about one that isn't that great. i didn't pay all that much for it. If it was stolen i would look for a better one. I will average out the scores of my two sub-ratings andd give it a 3.5- round up to four because i'm a nice guy.

AWESOME pedal. it has two modes, mode 1 is a more subtle shimmery effect while mode 2 has a more pronounced rotating speaker effect. i personally like mode 1 the best. with the rate and depth at 3:00 and the res at 12:00 it adds a KILLER spacey quality to my chords and arpeggios. i use the phaser for all of my clean stuff, even if just to add a little warmth or texture to it.

this pedal rocks. im playing a Dean ML-X>Boss PH-2>Dunlop Cryababy Volume Wah>Boss MT-2> Danelectro DanEcho >fender amp head to custom 4X12. i play a realy heavy thrashy style with psycadelic funky spacey bits, which is what this pedal is totally suited for. and it one of the only phaser out there that have this style of sound to it. ive heard others like ibanez or mxr but they are a bit to in your face for me. not a very useable sound. try this pedal out, it will amaze you.

Unless you're desperate to get The Clash's "Jimmy Jazz" phaser sound, this is one of the worst phasers you can buy. Sound like a phaser that put a lot of alum in its mouth. Kind of a pinched, wah-ish phaser sound. Pretty much every phaser I've ever tried is better than the Boss phaser. The Electro Harmonix Small Stone phaser costs $30 less and is the best-sounding phaser ever invented. Check out their website, they have sound files.
You'd be better off buying even an Ibanez or DOD phaser. This thing ain't cool.

I used this with my setup which contains 1 fender jag, a peavy raptor, a Ibanez custom, an RG7 IBanez like Korn, a Ibanez RX170 that they don't make anymore. For amps I use 2 marshall halfstacks when i do gigs and in the studio, at home and at pratice I use a marshall combo amp and a little peavy rage 158 amp, For pedals i used a boss MT-2 metal zone, PH-2 phaser, 2 boss chorus pedals, a boss RV-3 & DD-3, also an boss OC-2 & GE-7, and I have a DOD grunge pedal, DOD stereo flanger and a stereo phaser, and I have a Digitech RP-12 processor which I use in the studio mostly, I have a Jim Dunlop Original Crybaby, and the talk box, and the fab tone pedal, and like 3 tuners,

I have been playing for about 9 years, all other gear I own is everything I didn't list in sound quality area, its like a couple more Ibanez guitars like 4 more and more pedals that I haven't use for a while and my old marshall cabs, and like a american strat [fender] which fenders and any other guitars i have played before don't give that more of a heavier and louder sound as the Ibanezs do they give something that no other guitar gives your know what i'm talking about once you try it.

Very intense sound. Im giving it a 9, because thats what I wanted, but it may not suit everyones playing needs. Also, the little booger pitch shifts any sound before it, so any slight noise is subject to a funky treatment. Fortunatley, my pickups are quite as a mouse. With a distortion after, the pedal gets a bit noisy, but its unnoticeable at loud volumes.

This is a great pedal for any arsenal. My band plays a funky-metal-ska mix, so this is great for simple shimering effects, or whole blown phasing. I play a Dean ML-X, Peavy rage amp, and my current effects include Boss PH-2 phaser, dunlop crybaby, Boss bf-2 flanger, and a Danelectro daddy-o.
If you want the sounds of Korn, Rage Agianst the Machine, or any type of band like this, you need this pedal. But remember, you need more than one pedal to produce the actual sounds. A crybaby hooked with this is a perfect simple gig.

Its very good. I am using a Jackson Kelly w/ cheap jackson pickups, and a crate gfx 15 practice amp. I hook this up with my Boss Metal Zone, and it sounds great!! It makes the distortion sound alot "fuzzier" which i like. The res knob doesnt really change anything (from what I've noticed.) The depth and rate are the key knobs for changing the sound around. To me, mode 2 sounds alot better because its thicker, but maintains the "fuzzy treble" distortion. Put it on mode 2, and put all 3 knobs all the way up. Its weird!! But it is a little noisy, so I'm looking for a good noise gate to get rit of the noise. But overall, its awesome!

I am using this pedal with EMG-equipped guitars and Mesa/Boogie amps.
I bought this pedal on eBay based on high recommendations from this database. I was very disappointed.
The sound quality is very thin and tinny compared to other phasers I've used. The range is very broad, which is fine, but when the overall sound quality is so lacking in character, it's not worth it. I sold it on eBay within two weeks.
I'm currently using a Voodoo Labs Micro Vibe for most of the applications I was using the Phaser for. The MV sounds organic, like my tone has been marinated for days. The PH-2, in comparison, sounds like I poured a thin sauce on my sound. The same is true with my old Ibanez Bi-Stage Phaser, but to a lesser degree.

I use a PC-88 keyboard: the left side through a Crybaby then the Phaser, then into a Roland KC-500. The right side is dry. It can make any Phaser effect I've ever wanted, but when the phase it at it's high end (and the wah also on it's high end) on the second type, it can be ear piercing. No need for a flanger with this, but it also goes as slow as one could ever want. It can make the best deepest lead sound no matter how thin the sound is that is going in. If your instrument is already a little noisy, this'll make it worse, but if you have quality, then there's not much to complain about.

Kickass set-up, huh? The Ph-2 sounds great through all of this and i still get the great original tone of the amp and guitar! This thing is pretty easy to use. You've got 3 knobs and a 2-way switch. They are as follows; Rate, Depth Res and Mode I/ Mode II.
Rate and Depth pretty much speaks for themselves. I haven't payed much attention to the Res knob and keeps it completely off like all the time. I think it just makes the the sound a bit sharper or something. Perhaps it increases harmonics or something but I really don't know so don't take my word for it ok?
By the way please mail me if you know what it does or have read something in the booklet 'bout it or something.

I am using this pedal with my 79 anniversary strat (looks just like Billy Corgans old silvergrey one). Here's the setup:
<Ibanez 60's fuzz>-------<Ibanez CS-9>------<Boss PH-2>---------
<MXR Micro Flanger>---->Vox V847 Wah>---<MusicMan 130W 212 HD>.
I think it sounds pretty good but not as good as an original Small Stone or a Phase 90 or 100. Both modes come thru in a pretty good way. But I kinda think that mode II mutes or chokes the sound just a bit. One cool thing to do (at least in my opinion) is to get a pretty fuzzed up kind of sound, switch to the neck pickup and step on the PH-2. I mostly keep the rate at 9 o'clock and the depth at 12 or full. I mostly use mode I cuz I find it warmer and more discrete. I think that you with the help of a good fuzz pedal can mimic the solo on SP's plume in mode II thoughI'll maybe get a Gibson SG for christmas and Ill probbly use that one more that my strat, so my opinion on this pedal will perhaps change. . By the way that 60s fuzz of mine is hopefully to be replaced by a better fuzz pedal soon. Please mail me if youve got any tips on non vintage fuzzes. Is the FZ-3 a good choice?

Ive had this thing for like 2 years now and it has never failed me. I am not in a band right now so Im not gigging. I would probably gig without a backup. Anyway if it would crap out on me perhaps Id switch it off again and step on my micro flanger. Contrary to what most people think boss pedals can break. The rate knob on my friends CE-5 crapped out on him and he had to get it fixed at the store and once when I tried a DD-5 or was it a DD-3? I really can't remember but I'm pretty sure it was a DD-5. Anyway the pedal started doubleswitching and wouldn't stop doing that. But anyway my PH-2 has never had any problems at all.

It has a very clean, transperent sound even when you crank everything. It is not a thick, warm, full sound but I always end up using this (over other phasers) in recordings. I guess if you want the rotary speaker type sound, this is not the pedal. The subtle settings work well for funk, reggae and ska type cutting. (In fact, I got a really cool sound today while recording a ska influenced tune with the Sansamp GT-2 set on British, Clean, Center, with the drive up a tad.)I never gigged with this pedal though because I'm a bassist. I like phaser on everything, (even vocals) but phasers don't seem to work well on most bass parts. It's the volume weaving in and out, I guess. Actually, let me take that back. I do use phaser on bass with distortion for leads and such. I do that mostly live but I don't have the boss in the pedal board. (I use the phaser in my AX30B).

Man, I love this pedal. It's one of the oldest pedals (gee...fifteen years or so) in the house. Usually, I get tried of a pedal and try another manufacturer. I used to play keyboards (I quit once I got a sequencer, so I took up guitar) and I use to use it on the keyboard all the time. I used to use mode II on a harpsichord patch...made it sound sort of like a sitar. Usually I write a review on a fairly new effect, that is still a new toy. Today, when recording that track today with my telecaster and looked down at this pedal and thought "I should write up a good review on this phaser because it served me very well all these years." There are some phaser pedals I want to try like the Akai Intelligent phase or whatever and this Ibanez one (not the cheap sound tank series). A Guitar Player review said something like the Ibanez phaser was extremely funky and could imitate people chewing, gurgleing, or worse. Yeah! Sounds good to me!

I have a problem with the crazier setttings. It's be fun to have a super fast phase with all kinds of depth without losing the actual TONE of the instrument. All you hear is the sound of the pedal so it seems. I barely can hear the guitar at all, regardless of note/pitch. But at the more reasonable settings, the settings most people want to actually play with, you hear everything just fine and a good balance means a great phase from boss. Still, I love turning the knobs all the way up on my pedals and having fun!

ok - i just needed to clear this up from my last submission on this box which was made at a time when I ddint actually have it in my posession, BOSS pedals it seems are as mortal as the rest of the pack - God only knows how this happened but when i got this back off my friend (who was running it through a guitar and a digeridoo!!) THE RATE HAD SLOWED DOWN!!!! at lower extremes it seemed very much the same but between 12 & 3 oclock there is very little change in the speed and in the last few degrees of the knobs rotation, which is when there is generally a real acceleration in speed, it flattens out totally, stopping at a rate that could be matched by my terribly weak and cheap ibanez soundtank chorus. sure enough i ran down to my local music store & did a A/B with the one they had there - whammo - slow phasing for me! pisses me off cause i counld get some cool unsettling trem sounds happening but now it just sounds a bit to iffy for all that. PLEASE email me if you know how this can be fixed easily & cheaply cause I just bought a new guitar & the box = second hand so BOSS wont touch it

Basic Boss setup here, kids: four knobs (speed, depth, resonance, and two mode phaser stage select), mono in/out. Getting a good sound out of this unit really depends on your personal taste. The knobs offer a flexibility for tweaking in the exact sound you're looking for, which is kind of a double-edged sword. You could spend hours looking for that perfect Van Halen "chewy" phaser effect or you could find it in five minutes. Then again, it's a pedal not a rack unit. The features couldn't get anymore basic and they don't need to be.
Sound Quality

The sound quality from Boss pedals continues to amaze me and this pedal is no exception. From extended swooshes to make-your-ears bleed vibrato this pedal is a joy to mess around with. It's not particularly noisy (I've experimented with it in various positions in my signal chain) but I have noticed it can be The Omnipotent Effect even on the lowest resonance settings.
I found the PH-2 to be really intense when placed after high gain distortion pedals, so to counteract this and get a more Van Halen-like sweep I've put the PH-2 in FRONT of my Metal Zone. To me, this makes a world of difference considering I prefer phasing to add to the sound and not become the primary sound. The latter can be achieved here with a few tweaks of the resonance knob, but I usually keep mine parked just under 50 percent. With or without the distortion the phasing is rich and full, especially on a clean signal. The guitar and amp's tone remain vibrant throughout even the most intense resonance settings, though be careful when using it with overdrive/distortion. You might land a few UFOs ...

Boss often combines the best of both worlds into their pedals: ease of use and sound quality. This pedal continues to honor the legacy of sturdy, affordable, great sounding gear from Boss.
The only phaser I could see replacing this would be the "classic" phase-o-rama of the MXR series or the Boss PH-1. The only reason I state that is my settings on the PH-2 try to emulate those pedals. But, I bought the PH-2 so I could have that sound as well as other, weirder options. It's a fantastic value, a great pedal, and really messes up your signal. This is why you buy pedals in the first place, right? ;)

read the other reviews. This phaser is just beautiful - many different types of phase - warm retro to nasally swoosh that is often too intense for amps - good feedback though

This baby is awesome! I have no complaints about it! just stomp or tap on the pedal cover and it's activated. This pedal had no manual..........I dunno if it was supposed to.......I bought it brand new at guitar center. The sound quality is grrrreat and it even has a special resonance knob for extra strangeness.

Like I said........cant complain at all....I use a standard strat and from there goes my morley wah wah, distortion ds1 (boss,) and my phaser......It is not noisy at all.......if the resonance is up there is a hum, but only noticable if you stop playing or palm mute. The effects never get weak or wussy....great!!!!!! This baby gets great sweep/range and with depth up is smokin'! I really cannot get the sound of my favorite artist.....Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, but I can get the sound of other great artists such as kieth richards of the rolling stones.distortions and phase and chorus and flange and whammy and wah and...........are all great sounds and effects, and you should love em all!!!!!

This is a pretty straight forward pedal. All of the controls are really easy to use. The manual is pretty good but I just asume use the overall BOSS settings manual which has settings for all of the pedals manufactured by BOSS. The controls are so easy to set and almost every way you set it sounds great. The only problem is if you don't know what you are doing it will be hard to get the exact sound you want because every way you set it, the sound changes dramatically.

The setup I am currently using is a fender strat guitar and a fernandes amp, a VOX valve tone, a crybaby wah, and a BOSS hyper metal. But usually I don't play out of my amp, I play out of my Peavey PA. This truly a better sounding phasor than any other brand out there. DOD's is terrible. The effects always sound great. You can set the mode to where it sounds like an auto wah and you can set it low for long 5 second cycles. I can get that solo in the middle "Its On!" on the FOLLOW THE LEADER cd by KoRn. It also sounds good to just make up your own lead parts and just add in a cool setting that you have found.

BOSS makes the most dependable single - effect pedals out there. I mean it you could be in a bombing and the only thing that might be left is your BOSS Pedals. I would not take a back up but I would take a bunch of batteries. This thing can eat a pack of batterys in a week if you leave it plugged in. Thats not the pedals fault though.

I play grunge, alternative. It is pretty good for the solos. I have been playing for about 1 and a half years. If was ever stolen I would find the person that stole it and beat the living crap out of them because I love this pedal. I compared it to the DOD and the DOD sux.

This is a very easy pedal to use, although sometimes you will get mixed up as to what nobs do what. Although if you use it enough you will figure it out, I really didnt even study the manual.

I use a Peavy classic100watt head and a fender4x12 cab with either a tele or an epi lespaul. Other effects I have are dodfx96 rotovibe and vox wah. This pedal is awsome. It has everthing from deep phase to a rotary speaker sound. Only drawback is that mode 2 really isnt useful. It is a little to high pitched. When bypassed it can have a little noise but a good noise gate will take care of that. Its not that big a deal anyway.

I can defintally depend on this pedal. It seems to go easy on the batteries. Usually gig 2 or 3 times with it before change I change it. I dont have a backup for it and dont need it.

Quite easy to use if you've had a phasor at one time or another. The manual was pretty good at texplaining the basics between the two different levels of pasing and had some examples in it.

I'm sure most would like it as far as a phasor goes. I was disappointed, but only because it was way too good! You see, my old pase-shifter (I don't remember what kind, but I bought it back in the mid 70's) could be cranked down to a barely perceptable level where you had to listen closely and even then you had a hard time deciding if it was on or not. This unit was totally incapable of that. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get it down to the level of phasing I wanted. I still have to give it a good rating, as it does what it does very well, it just wasn't for me.

I sent it back (thank god for Musicians Friend return policy). It may be great for those wanting a very heavy and defined phase sound but it just wasn't for me. I worked with it for two days but it just didn't happen. I don't hold this against Boss though. Phasors have come a long way since the first ones came out. I believe my first one was a "Four-bit" and the boss Ph-2 is like a 14 bit or something. I exchanged it for a BD-2 Blues Driver, and that's the best exchange I ever made. Musicians Friend was great about my returning it. It's an excellent pice of gear, just not for me. I'll probably not buy another phasor, as I've discovered my style has changed somewhat and now I don't think it's my sound anymore.

reasonably easy to handle and get a good sound, four knobs depth, rate, res. and type(I or II). the manual i have is pretty average, and i bought the thing new, doesn't explain the functions all that well (for example, I'm still not 100% sure what the res. knob does)
Sound Quality
:

it is not all that noisy, however, if left on it does phase the noise that is there even if you aren't playing, for example, i have noisy pickups, and it phases the noise made by them. The second type of phasing (type II) is a bit extreme for my liking, and can at times be unusable depending on the setup, as it can be very hard on the ears. Used with my marshall and big muff re-issue, it can help produce some pumpkins like solos

when i first bought it i used it all the time, but my tastes have changed a bit and it does not get as much use as it did, it can be useful for a variety of styles i'd imagine, especially if you were after something a bit different (experimental). its not something which can be used all the time in my opinion, and as the first pedal i bought, i probably should have waited and bought the necessity's first. overall however, i am very happy with this effect as it does not suck.

man this sounds very very good. i got rid of my old small stone because the noise it made while in bypass, i got this and it is dead silent its perfect. but it lacks a little extra warmth that the EH small stone had. but still it is the best phaser available.

this was definately worth the money. it can fit almost every style of playing, it works very well on clean sounds, mode 2 is my favorite it is much warmer sounding than mode 1 i like it a lot. add some heavy distortion to this and set the rate a little slow and play. u get some heavy sounds. try it. its wonderful it should be a very key part of my rig.

Using a 1981 Gibson Les-Paul and Peavey Backstage-50(solid-state)amp, I find the PH-2's sound quality Ok, but nothing super special. This gizmo features 2 modes. Mode 1 is the more subtle setting, and more than adequate. Mode 2 is a heavy-duty phased sound, that's best for special FX and trippy wackiness! Not very noisy, but I find mine makes an audible "bump" in the sound when engaged! Also it seems as if this unit is not equipped with true bypass, as even when not "on" I still perceive a slight phase to the sound! Works best for me in combo with Chorus. It produces a "watery type sound (Mode 1). Not an FX I would use all the time.

A good general purpose phase. In mode 2 all types of "strange" tones can be conjured. Would be better with true bypass! Would probably look into something else if lost or stolen. Overall: Ok for what it does.
