Ease of Use : 9
Very easy to use. Just don't change to stream or change from concert 440. I just plug in & go.

Sound Quality : 9
Before I put all my pedals in true bypass this pedal DID make noise when added to a single chain of 5-6 pedals, including a compressor/sustainer. I've since changed a lot of pedals to true bypass, like my Keeley stompboxes, and I use a true bybass for two sets of arrays. I plug into the TU-2, battery-powered, before my pedal board now and I notice no change in the sound. No tone suck with my setup.

Reliability : No Opinion
It's got chiped paint from being thrown into my gig suitcases for years now and it still works perfectly.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never contacted Boss for any problems with their pedals

Overall Rating : 9
I like the TU-2. I've had no problems and I've been happy with the pedal since I need onstage tuning every time I play. Only one problem! It's hard to read in bright sunlight!

This pedal is self-explanatory. I prefer to use the "cent" mode, as opposed to "stream", but both are satisfactory. The LEDs are bright which makes tuning on a dark stage a non-issue. It is also convenient because, when using the daisy chain adapter, it can supply power to several other pedals.

Sound Quality : 10
I use this pedal as the first in a chain of four. I haven't noticed if the pedal does diminish the quality of my tone, even though conventional wisdom suggests that every pedal alters tone to some degree. Perhaps the best feature of this unit is the mute: when the switch is depressed the signal is cut so as to spare any audience the sound of you tuning.

Reliability : 10
It's a BOSS: they're indestructible.

I gig with this unit all the time and have never bothered to get a backup -- a situation that does not concern me.

Customer Support : 10
I have never had any problem with this unit and, consequently, no dealing with its manufacturer.

Overall Rating : 10
I use this all the time, and I would buy another one if (in the event of a nuclear blast) it quit working.

Easy to use when you're in the "Cent" display mode. I find it a bit difficult to tune my guitar when I use the "Stream" display. Very easy to change tuning modes and adjusting the pitch.

Sound Quality : 10
Hasn't altered my tone. I use it first in my effects chain and I haven't had a problem. I love the silent tuning feature.

Reliability : 10
Accurate tuning and built like a tank. I've dropped mine, yet it still looks like it came out of the box.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 8
I do like this tuner but I wish it had a built-in mic for acoustic guitars. I don't like the stream display, it gets too confusing. I do like the ease of use. You can switch tuning modes with a push of a button. I just wish it were a bit cheaper. If mine broke, I'd be a little reluctant to pay $100 for a new one. Try to buy one used, if at all possible.

Tuning itself is very simple. If the rest of the band are doing things at the same time then it causes some vibration on other strings which confuses the hell out of it. I have to dampen the other 5 strings I'm not tuning to be accurate - and then sometimes have to tweak it by ear. However - it stops you from being wildly out and gets you very close to the general area you need to be in for tuning. The LED is bright, the DC out is a godsend.

I never put mine in bypass mode as I find it really useful to be able to kill the signal for all sorts of reasons which keep surprising me! The main time when killing the signal is useful is when I'm playing acoustic and not playing in a passage - I'm the lead singer as well so being able to kill the signal (so I don't get hum or feedback from the vibrating stings) and do a few hand movements rather than keeping one hand over the strings is very useful. Also useful if I break a string and have to swap to another guitar - killing the singal without having to leg it over to my amp is great.

Sound Quality : 10
I've not found any issue with altering the tone of my sound - and my ears are pretty good. It's the first pedal in my minimal chain and I can't notice a difference when I don;t use it.

Reliability : 10
Rugged, dependable - I wouldn't want to gig without one but I don;t bother with a backup. Done over 300 shows with this baby and I got it 2nd hand.

It's great! No other comments - does what it does well and being able to kill the signal when you need to is one of those tiny things that all add up to sounding and being more professional.

Very simple to use. Follow the labels on each jack and plug it up. I run it off the tuner-out on my Ernie Ball VP Jr. volume pedal. That way it cannot affect my effects chain signal that feeds my amplifier. I use the TU-2 to power my Barber Tone Press Compressor, Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe, Boss DD-7 Digital Delay, and Ibanez AD-9 Analog Delay pedals. I have a Fulltone OCD overdrive and Fulltone Distortion Pro in the chain as well but those two are powered by 9 volt carbon batteries for the best tone. The TU-2 is an accurate tuner and a great power supply for my Pedal Train PT-2-HC board. The manual addresses all you need to know and more.

Sound Quality : 10
Dead Quiet! Because I'm using the TU-2 independently of the guitar signal/effects chain, and I'm coming off of the tuner out on the volume pedal, the tuner cannot negatively affect my tone going to the amp. Most of my other pedals in the signal/effects chain have true bypass so my signal remains strong all the way to the amplifier. There is no added buzzing, humming, or noise in the chain when using the TU-2 as my pedal board power supply. I use Lava Pedal Board kit cables and connectors. My amps are all tube, hand wired, Fenders. I have a 1977 Silver Face Princeton amp, a 1977 Silver Face Vibro Champ amp, and a 1984 Black Face Deluxe Reverb II (Rivera Era)amp. My main guitars are 1997 American Standard Stratocaster with Lollar blond pickups and Acme pickgaurd and wiring assembly, 1989 Fender Japanese Stratocaster with the American Standard wiring and pickup assembly, and 2001 Ibanez AS-120 Semi Hollow body (ES 335 clone). My acoustic is the heavenly Martin HD-28, but it doesn't plug in and is strictly used in it's pure acoustic form. This combination of effects pedals, guitars, cables, and amplifiers are fantastic. I was concerned about using the TU-2 to power my effects chain but time has proven this product to be a fantastic and compact power supply. Just buy the Boss "daisy chain" wire and you instantly have a valid power supply for you pedal board. You might verify that the Boss TU-2 is safe for you non-Boss pedals. I did this myself. I am very pleased with my rig. I will soon add the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wah Wah and the Fulltone Mini Deja Vibe to the chain.

Reliability : 10
Never fails to perform. It takes weeks of gigging to wear down an alkaline 9 volt battery. Unlike other pedals, it takes very little battery power to run the pedal. You can fully use up a battery before the pedal finally stops working. Sometimes I will take batteries that are dying in my other pedals and move them to the TU-2 Tuner. I finish running them down in the tuner until they are completely spent. Built like a tank.

Customer Support : 10
The switch on one of my other Boss effect pedals wore out after years of consistant week to week gigging. I got a phone number from either the manual or the Boss home page and called the company. I ordered a new switch from Boss and did the repair myself by making a couple of solder points. The switch arrived in a couple day. It was shipped inside an envelope and the part cost less than the postage. That Boss pedal is once again performing flawlessly. Boss has been good to me.

Overall Rating : 10
I use the pedal with my bass rig as well. Everyone I know has this pedal and they have nothing but good things to report. Boss makes some good things, but this may be their best effects pedal ever. It is easy to read in a dark or in a well lit environment. Just umnplug it when you are not playing. I've had mine for over ten years and it looks and performs like new in spite of continuous use on the stage week after week. I play Rock, Folk, Jazz, etc...

Could not be easier. Plug-in chose mode (basically guitar or bass), tune up.

Sound Quality : 10
For live playing this is the greatest pedal in the universe. For all those of us that have played on dimly lit stages all our lives the LED display means you can tune without ruining your eyesight. I love the fact that when in tune mode it cuts the output signal meaning that i can tune to open G (for example) between songs in about 2 seconds without the audience having to listen to tune-up verse 4. For those who say it sucks tone....i have never noticed it. When recording i tune then play WITHOUT leaving it in the signal chain and live...if your ears can hear the difference with all the band around you you are a genius.

Never had a problem with boss pedals and i've owned loads of them.

Simple. Plug it in, turn it on and tune!

Sound Quality : 10
No tone loss as some have stated. I'm a "tone chaser" and I would know. I test every unit I get by sitting on the floor with my face stuck in front of a 4x12 cab. Perfectly silent when off and on. I use the mode where it shuts off my signal when tuning. Great for live shows to tune between songs. I run this second in my effects chain. From my guitar I go into a Boss SD-1 Overdrive, then the tuner, then a phase 90, and finally a Digidelay into several EVH 5150III heads. This concept sure beats tuning up with my compact tuner before each show.

It does sucks a lot of tone which is common to Boss pedals. They are pedals with lousy buffers in them that kills your guitar tone.

This is remedied by plugging to the Tuner Out jack on the Ernie Ball Volume Pedal

Unless you are a tone purist and are looking for a true bypass tuner this is the best option. The next option is a strobo stomp, and for that kinda change it had better make me a grilled cheese sandwich! Don't get the ****** fender tuner, get a TU-2 and save yourself some hassle.

Ease of Use : 9
Dead easy to use. Guitar in socket and either direct or mute out sockets. No appreciable signal degradation.

I tend to use the neck PU with the tone pot knocked back for tuning purposes. That way you avoid harmonics that cause the tuner difficulty in locking in on the fundamentals. Mode options are well thought out and easy to select. The only problem I have ever had with a TU-2 was in direct sunlight which made reading the display difficult. But there again I do daylight gigs so rarely it doesn't really matter.

The 9v output socket is very useful for those occasions when a non-pedalboard unit is used as well as the board itself. Nice thoughtful touch!

Both of my pedalboards have a TU-2 as their first stompbox.

Sound Quality : 9
No effect on the basic guitar sound as far as I can tell. Noise is not noticeable. That's what one would expect from a tuner...

Reliability : 10
It. Is. A. BOSS. Wholly dependable.

No dealings with Boss or their UK distributor. No need - ever!

Overall Rating : 9
Great tuner. Life is much easier with a TU-2 on board (literally). I chose it (a) because I felt I needed a stage tuner, and (b) it's a Boss and would survive Armageddon along with the cockroaches.

DGP contains TU-2 >> Monte Allums CS-3 mod >> modded Blubber wah >> Monte Allums BD-H2O >> Monte Allums SD-808 >> original 80s Rat2 >> Boss CH-1 >> Boss DD-3

Pedalboard 2 has TU-2 >> Guyatone ST-2 compressor >> Morley Powerwah >> Keeley SD-1 >> modded Proco You Dirty Rat >> Arion SPH-1 phaser.

My first TU-2 was bought secondhand; the second was a chosen prize despite already having one!

The only thing I find wrong with this tuner is the lag time from when you turn it on and when it actually starts registering your signal. Unfortunately, that is a deal breaker, since it's almost 5 seconds. I bought the TU2 to replace a Korg DT10 in order to save room on my board. They are equally as accurate and easy to use, however, the Korg registers immediately, and for quick, fine-tuning, I can be done with the low E and on to the A before the Boss is even ready to go. You might not think 5 seconds is a lot, but step on it and then stand there on stage hitting the string and waiting for it register. It's a long time! The Korg is back on my board and I use the Boss as a backup.

Sound Quality : 5
Using the power output off the back of this resulted in horrible noise. It was not useable, otherwise, not noisy and no tone loss

Reliability : No Opinion

For the 5 second lag time, I gotta rate this low overall. Get the Korg and save time.

I love this tuner! It's easy to use and easy to understand. I spent five minutes with the manual and I was in the correct mode and ready to go.
All my bandmates have one and I tried it out prior to purchasing it. I've been playin' for 20 yrs and I am super picky about tone, don't hear any significant difference in the tone with the pedal in the chain. I recommend it being next in line to your guitar for more accuracy.
I am legally blind and needed a stage tuner that I could see. I can see the sharp, flat and in tune lights in all situations without having to bend down which was a BIG plus for me. I've had nothing but good experiences with this tuner. Haven't used it to power all my other pedals yet, but that's coming soon.

Sound Quality : 10
I don't think it changes your tone much at all. I have a Mahogany LP through a Fender 65DLX reissue and it sounds great. I put it closest to my guitar in the chain for accuracy.

Reliability : 10
None of my buds has ever had a problem with theirs even after touring and years of use. I anticipate the same good fortune!

Overall Rating : 10
I think everybody needs this tuner if they gig out live a lot. I click it on and it mutes my sound and in one min. I'm back in tune ready to go again.
I use .010's and play blues. I bend alot so my high strings are always goin' out of tune. It's nice now to have the security of bein' in tune after each song. It's addictive though. I can get anal about bein' in tune!
Buy it, you won't regret it!

Very easy to use. Plug your guitar into the input socket and plug a cable from the output socket to your amp. However, that is if you want to tune your guitar silently. If you still want the signal to go through, plug the cable into the bypass socket then to the amp. If you didn't understand that, don't worry, it should come with a manual.

Sound Quality : 10
It doesn't mess with my tone at all.

Fairly simple to use, but do read the owners manual. There are different modes that provide different visual displays. Such as, it will display the string number with 6 being the low E and 1 being the high E, or it will osccilate LED's when tuning, or you can get it to only light up one LED at a time. Learn how to use it to get the most from it. After much experimentation, I determined that it is easier to use down on the floor as the single LED mode. It is accurate to +or- 3 cents (as opposed to the Peterson Strobe Tuner Pedal which is accurate to +or- 1/10 of 1 cent) Huge difference, so 3 cents is enough to have you see everything be in tune on the tuner but when you play a chord, a player with a good ear will hear those +or- 3 cents and have to fine tune.

Sound Quality : 10
What can you say about the "Sound" of a guitar tuner, when it is on, you can have it mute your signal so you can tune quietly or you can bypass it so you can hear it. But I was unable to hear any change in tone whatsoever with it off. I use mine on a pedal board, early in the effects chain. Remember to always use your bridge pickup and turn your tone all the way down when you use an electronic tuner. Tuners are able to lock on to the much more stable signal when it hears low. Highs can confuse them and make them appear erratic.

Reliability : 9
I have had no problems with it so far, it is held on with velcro to my pedal board and never gets beat up or abused. Typical BOSS build quality.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to talk to customer support at BOSS/Roland

Overall Rating : 8
I like the white color, it stands out on a dark stage. I do not like the accuracy of only +or- 3 cents. I wish it could be more accurate, but it is 1/3 the price of the Peterson pedal. So you get what you pay for in tuner pedals. There are lots of BOSS collectors out there so they hold their value pretty good if you ever decide to sell them. For me it works fine.

Ease of Use : 10
It's easy. I can't see how a tuner would be hard to operate.

Sound Quality : 8
There is minimal "tone suck" with this pedal. I have a couple of non-true bypass pedals and when I use the tuner with them I dont notice it.
But when I run my guitar -> tu-2 -> mesa stilleto, i do notice a difference between thru the tu-2 and straight into the amp. The stilleto is a very bright amp and I found the tu-2 to dull the highs just a bit. I find it dissapointing that they can't even make a tuner true bypass.
But as I said, with my other non-true bypass pedals the difference isn't noticeable. If I had an all true-bypass set up, i would ditch the tu-2 or run it in a loop or something.

Reliability : 10
the usual boss quality

Overall Rating : 9
It's a very handy thing to use on stage. It does the job it's meant to and it doesn't chew through the batterys (if you unplug it when not in use).
My only issue is that it's not true bypass.
Otherwise, a great pedal.

Ease of Use : 5
It should be the easiest thing on the planet but I found it frustrating because I often had to "touch-up" my tuning by ear after tuning with the pedal. Sometimes it was OK, other times not. It is very easy to activate and I found that occasionally hit the switch when activating the boost on my Fulldrive and ended up with no solo rather than boosted solo. I found it to be marginal.

Sound Quality : 9
If it altered my sound, it wasn't for the worse.

Reliability : 3
I really wanted to like this pedal because it is small, rugged and has a really useful DC out jack. I depended on it for a year or two but it became increasingly unreliable as time passed. It would sometimes refuse to tune my low E or A string, some times indicate that I was way sharp or flat when I was actually in tune - not indicating a little out, but miles out. Eventually, it began to intermittently ignore my input signal although the switching still worked. It found its way into my trash can today because it no longer responds to any input signal.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 5
Lots of people swear by them and if they came out with an upgraded model that was more accurate I would buy another. I am currently using my backup Peterson Strobostomp version 1 which is accurate but not so reliable due to the cheap plastic jacks and the inexcusably flimsy "shatter-on-contact" plastic covering over the display. I think I will likely try the Korg floor tuner and live without the DC output jack.

Alrite, well let's just say that because it's a boss, it's easy to use. Turn it on, tune, turn it off. 2 tuning modes makes it easy for pretty much anyone. Plus being able to switch between bass, guitar, b, and bb makes it amazing. I find myself using the chromatic mode the most though.

Sound Quality : 10
This tuner is amazing. the only problem I have is sometimes when I turn it on while i have my dm-4 on it tents to buzz, but no big deal, just shut the dm-4 off.

it doesn't matter what i use it with, it sits either right before the volume, or right after the wah pedal (ernie ball volume into dunlop wah).

This pedal is the pedal i use most on my board. I also find it useful for a good signal stop for switching guitars and stuff (i havent bought a line selector yet).

Reliability : 10
I would depend on this with my life. it's bullet proof. I travel with my board quite a bit, and never even thought about getting a 2nd. and won't ever think about it. have confidence in the boss stuff.

I like that this tuner is in pedal-form and can be powered from an adapter. That way I can keep it hooked up all the time. BUT, I'm not sure how precise it is. The regular tuning mode where the LED's act like a meter seemed unreliable, like the middle LED covered too wide of a range. So I switched to the tuner to stream mode where the LED's circle around, faster when you are far out of tune and slow to a stop when you are in tune. However, that doesn't seem very precise either. Sometimes, even when this pedal says a guitar is in tune, it doesn't sound quite right and another tuner confirms it. I like the features of this tuner but I'm not sure it does a good job of the one thing it should do best.

It's pretty easy to use but then again I don't use many of its features. I just turn it on and tune. The only thing I have done otherwise is change it from "cent" to "stream." Since there are so few LED's, you almost have to use stream mode to tune accurately - there's just not enough precision otherwise.

Sound Quality : 9
I haven't noticed any noise when it's off. And I don't use the bypass jack so it should be silenced when it's on.

When I rate this pedal, I am comparing it to the Seiko SAT100 tuner that the Boss TU-2 replaced. I really wanted a TU-2 because, unlike the Seiko, it is in pedal-form and it can be powered with an AC adapter. I also like that the TU-2 simply shows you the nearest note including sharps and whether you are sharp or flat. The Seiko only shows you natural notes (not sharps/flats) without fooling around with the settings.

So, with all of those features, it seems like the TU-2 would be a 10, hands down. But even with all those bells and whistles, I'm not sure it's very precise. Maybe the range that it considers "in tune" is too wide. Maybe that's because the "needle" on the Seiko's display has about 50 segments as opposed to 11 big LED's on the Boss. The Seiko also tells you exactly how many hundredths a note is from being in tune.

A guitar that the Boss pedals says is perfectly in tune usually isn't quite in tune. Retuning with the Seiko will show that the Boss-tuned guitar is off a bit. I'm aware that a guitar's overall tuning can change a bit depending on things as simple as the angle that it is sitting at but notes are sometimes out of tune relative to one another, which is a bad sign. Simply put, the TU-2 is very neat and gadgety but doesn't quite do the one thing it should do best.

Very easy to use, plug in-->turn it on-->select tuning method (strobe or cent...I tend to find cent a little bit easier)--> select chromatic or one of the multiple guitar or bass tunings-->tune.
I really dont think a manual is all that nessesary for it.

It's a tuner, there isn't any noticeable tone suck at all.

I've used mine for 4 years now and haven't had a single problem with it. Its survived spilt drinks, plenty of practices, and its fair share of gigs and stomps. This pedal will probably outlast me.

I play in the pit band for a lot of local broadway shows as well as occasionally in a pickup band. I love this little unit. Not only can I do a quick check on the tuning, but it serves as an excellent muting switch between songs during a show. I'm flipping it off and on dozens of times during a performance, and has never blinked. I like the tuner section very much - it seems more stable than most, very accurate, and easy to see while standing, etc. - all the info you need and nothing more.

If you don't think the cent method of tuning is accurate enough then try the strobe method. If you still can't get your guitar in tune buy a better guitar. This is a great pedal.

I have a solution for those of you who think the TU-2 sucks your tone and can live without using the pedal as a mute-switch... the input buffer on the pedal has a very high impedance (about 1 meg-ohm in fact!) so all you need to do is eliminate going through the internal circuitry that alters the tone. By definition, BOSS uses the input buffer to present a high-impedance load to the guitar - but then they convert the signal to a low-impedance with a buffer follower that MAY present problems with some pedals that expect to see a high impedance signal source (typical of older "vintage" pedals like fuzzface).

If you can live without the mute function, clip the yellow wire that goes to the BYPASS jack at the board and wire it directly to the lug on the input jack (I think it has a green or brown wire). Be careful to leave a little stub of yellow wire on the board at the original location should you ever choose to reverse this mod.

Now, just plug into the tuner as normal and use the BYPASS jack to send the signals to the rest of your chain. The pedal operates just as before... but now presents no load to your signal and no active circuitry is involved to muck up your tone. Any following pedals will still see a high-impedance signal source just as if you plugged your guitar straight in. If you still want to use the pedal as a MUTE pedal for tuning.. then you have to use the standard output jack and go through the active buffer circuits in the pedal.

I just use the pedal to turn the tuner on when I need it and run my signal through the BYPASS jack (now in parallel with the INPUT jack).

Well I guess this is the key category here. I've found that it is sometimes a bit slow at finding notes but that;s only when playing open strings. I can't emphasise this enough: USE HARMONICS WHEN TUNING. It gives the purest sound to the tuner, ensuring it won't get confused with overtones or fret buzz. Now I think it works great.

Easy to use - just plug and play. Read the manual to figure out what the various modes do. It remembers the last mode it was set for, which is nice. I use it mostly in chromatic mode, switching between various open tunings and standard tuning, or standard tuning down one whole step (D-D).

I have not used it as much as expected on stage. I don't like it that much. It is hard to see the "sharp" indication, and therefore too easy to tune to A# instead of A, for example.

Sound Quality : 8
Bought it on the advice of touring pro's. It has the reputation of locking onto the pitch quickly and accurately, and also is silent for bypass switching while tuning. I have not noticed that it changed my on-stage tone much (Taylor 414CE guitar with Fishman on-board piezo).

Reliability : 5
Seems to be reliable. One big issue is that the battery runs down if the cord stays plugged in, even if the unit appears to be off. A backup tuner in your pocket (like the Intellitouch) is a very good idea.

Customer Support : 6
Never had to deal with them, but I have found their web site to be lacking and unfriendly.

Overall Rating : 4
The TU-2 does appear to tune quickly and accurately, and the bypass mode is indeed silent. There are two big drawbacks, though.

One, if you no longer have 18 year old eyes (or wear glasses) it is really hard to see whether you are sharp when in chromatic mode. The only indication is a small dot after the letter, like a decimal point. Other stomp box tuners have a large # symbol that is clearly visible from several feet away. The first time I used it on stage to get into an open tuning, two of the four strings ended up tuned one half-step high, because I could not see the tiny "sharp" indication.

Two, the battery runs down if you happen to leave the cord plugged in -- even though the unit appears to be off. Changing batteries is not terribly convenient either -- definitely not something you want to try between songs.

If BOSS fixed these two big problems it would be a pretty good stage tuner, and I would be satisfied with it. The TU-2 appears to be well made, but these basic design flaws really degrade the utility.

As it stands, I have not used this tuner nearly as much as expected on stage. I don't like it that much, and I'm pretty disappointed. I would NOT buy another one, and frankly want to get rid of this one to someone who can live with its drawbacks. I've already replaced it with another stompbox tuner (Fender) with larger letters and much clearer "sharp" indications.

Very good intuitive interface, modes easy to find and select. I did find these a little hard to understand however. Set in 'chromatic' mode the display indicates the key you are tuned to (or nearest to). This works well on 6 string and bass. With other modes selected (eg drop tuning)the string number is displayed on the LED. The pedal seemed to think I had a 5 string bass....not so unfortunately.

This is the first review I have left on this site and it was the effect of this tuner on my sound which has prompted me to post something. I had read all the other reviews and since there was a balance of opinion regarding the effect on sound quality of this 'non true by-pass' type tuner, I thought I would try it. I'm regretting it now. This thing sucks....tone that is. It sucked the brightness out of my gear leaving it all sounding decidedly thin and muffled. I couldn't believe that other reviewers had had no issues with this!

Very simple after your read the manual. I tried this pedal before in my rythm guitarists rig, and wasn't too impressed. Fast forward a few months, I saw it at the local guitar store for about 1/2 price (used). I tried it out. I grabbed a strat with a floating bridge. It worked allright, it didn't seem too accurate or precise. It appeared to be no better than any handheld cheapo-Korg tuner of the $20 variety. I wasn't going to buy it. Then, an older fellow came over and showed me the "streaming" mode. I bought it after that. Very accurate.

Sound Quality : 8
Maybe a little tone sucking. It's not too noticable to me. I use the Bypass output and leave it on.

If you're worried about losing some tone, connect the tuner to the slave-out on your amp.

Here is my setup: Strat->CryBaby->TU2->TS->DualRectifier

Works great with guitar (floating/fixed) and bass. It's chromatic, so it should work on any stringed instrument with an output. I suggest using the TU-2 only in "streaming" mode. I would give it a 10/10 but the price is steep for a tuner. On the other hand, playing in tune is worth every cent.

Does my gear sound any different with or without the tuner? Good question. I can't really tell, honestly. If I were recording, I sure wouldn't use it, that's for sure. Live? Who cares? If anyone in my audience notices the difference (and I guarantee you, they don't), then bully for them. I'm sure as hell not about to give up the convenience on the off chance somebody's going to care about a (hypothetical) incremental effect on my tone.

Overall Rating : 8
To tell you the truth, I rarely use the thing to actually tune my guitar. I've got a 2001 Fender P-Bass, and it rarely (if ever) goes out of tune. What I was really looking for was a cutoff switch, or a volume pedal, so I could silence my bass during shows. For years I always tuned by ear live and at rehearsals, and only used a tuner at times that called for perfect tuning, ie. recording.
Practically every gigging musician I know owns a Boss TU-2 stage tuner. For how common they are, you'd almost figure they're required by law. I'm not especially passionate about the thing - it does what it says on the box, but frankly, I'd be happier spending the $125 on something else. On balance though... Good product.

Guitar --> TU-2 --> Tube combo amp

It's the only thing between my guitar and my amp so if it degrades the tone, I don't notice. I give it a 9 instead of a 10 to account for this possibility. That's not the reason why I'm writing this review anyway.

The main thing I like about this tune is that it's very stable, and it gets my guitar in tune much more easily because of that.

Very easy for using cause I had another Korg digital tuner with LED's. Reading the manual revealed some other things i didn't know before, but it was all clear after that.
Very easy to use alternate tunings, which I do often. If people say it is not accurate, they should try a different tuning method. I always used to just pluck the string and read, but let me tell you...the note you hear then is composed of MANY different overtones and ONE fundamental note. We humans only hear the fundamental, or that one note we pluck. But an electronic tuner "hears" the fundamental and every overtone of that fundamental. So your tuner has some difficulties picking the right note, and therefore the dial will go crazy around the note. Instead play the harmonic on the 12th fret of the string and you'll provide your tuner with the purest tone you can deliver. No dancing anymore.

Sound Quality : 9
I use a Les Paul into a Bad Cat amp. Effects include a Marshall Shredmaster, Zvex Fuzz, ART reverb mainly (have others but you don't bother I guess).
For me it is not noisy and it doesn't affect tone. I use it as first pedal in a series connection, and I use a battery. The plan is to use it with AC power into a loop, but as said in the configuration now it doesn't alter the tone.
Let me tell you I hate Boss for this reason, their pedals always change your tone some kind, but this one I'll keep

or
"it's a Boss, built like a tank"

bull****! I've had the Boss CE5, CH1, GT6, AW2, Tu2, FZ3, BF2, PS5 and CS3, and most of them had problems. On the TU2 the hole for the screw for opening to insert the battery became too large. The TU2 now jumps open now and then. And the battery clips break after intense use with batteries. Good I can solder.
Sure, the casing is sturdy, but so are many other brands

I haven't noticed any effect on my tone. It's very easy to use. The manual isn't really needed, but i comes with one.

The PROBLEM is, it just isn't precise enough. It may say you are in perfect tune, but you may be a little out. This tuner NEVER tunes your guitar perfectly... It comes very close but is always off slightly. I have spent years using this tuner thinking that it was the best I could buy and have always had tuning problems with my guitars. I thought my guitars had poor tuning pegs or my strings were just stretching or that my intonation was off. Not the case, the problem was the boss tuner. Somebody finally told me about the Peterson Strobostomp and my tuning problems instantly went away. The strobostomp is extremely accurate and doesn't get confused like the tu-2

Also, the tu-2 isn't true bypass so it colors your guitar sound when in the signal chain. It's also buffered, so that can make your fuzz boxes or OD pedals sound mushy. Don't ever use this thing in your signal chain! The peterson strobostomp is true bypass and won't cause you these problems

Overall, this pedal is a total waste of money. IT doesn't tune your guitar so what's the point in owning it? Some people think they can dance but they have no rhythm... other people think their guitar is in tune but they can't hear correct pitch. If you're using this box I GUARANTEE you are out of tune. Simply tune your guitar with the TU-2 and then play a power chord... you will instantly notice that there is a "wolfing" sound. The boss is just out of tune enough to make your chords slightly off. Tune your guitar with the TU-2 and then try manually tuning using harmonics... you will hear that your harmonics are off even though the boss says your in tune.

I also own the 500 dollar rackmount peterson strobe tuner. It is probably the best gear purchase I've ever made. My guitars are perfectly intonated and sound beautiful! The strobostomp comes very close to the accuracy of the rackmount so I will recommend the strobostomp for players on a budget.

DO NOT buy this box. Save your money for a Peterson. I spent years out of tune because of this pedal. Don't repeat my mistake

Sound quality.....hmmmm....in a tuner..... I would say based on the fact that it's not true bypass (it does suck a bit of tone but not too much), and that the accuracy rating has been questioned, I give it a 9. The accuracy rating is being very picky. It's more than accurate enough for live use and recording for that matter. People should get their guitars set up by an experienced tech and also remember to tune to the attack of the note and not the decay. You almost have to be hearing like dogs and cats to nitpick the +/- .3 accuracy rating. I mean that's damn good. P.S. I run my pedal from a true bypass switch box so the pedal isn't in my tonal chain. This way the non true bypass isn't an issue.

Boss scores big in this department. A great utility pedal for sure. They're pedals will probaly be the only thing left after the bomb drops. Roaches and Boss pedals. Now there's a thought!

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had an issue so there's never been a need for support.

Overall Rating : 10
If this thing was lost or stolen, I would go get another without blinking an eye. I wish more younger bands (ie. high school) would get these the same time they buy their guitar and amp packages from Guitar Center.

Easy and good. You gotta choose an out jack, and read the manual if you don't know the notes (A, B#, etc.) you're going for, because I think it starts on that mode and it seems to me it would rarely be necessary to switch. But it does have different modes and can stream, but I use it by going for the center green dot.

Sound Quality : 6
I haven't seen many people review it this way but I have to give this pedal a 6 for sound quality. Not because it sucks tone when it's off (if it was only for that I'd give it a 9), but because the accuracy is only +/- 3 cent. The only reason that doesn't bother me badly is because I saw on guitargeek that Dave Grohl uses one, but I'm on the move to relegate this pedal into a backup position because of the lack of accuracy. I'm looking at the Peterson StroboStomp. If you haven't heard of it, the stats are really great (the price is just okay, at nearly $200), and you should check it out. I've never used one.

Reliability : 10
It's reliable. Saw one at a live show in Tuscaloosa, AL, and it was pretty messy looking (read: barely white anymore), but still working.

I just wish I could find a Boss manual on the internet. No Rating.

Overall Rating : 7
I play rock, and have been playing for 9+/- years. If it were lost I wouldn't replace it and if it were stolen I'd try to get the value from the robber and put it towards a StroboStomp. I like it cause it's got a power out I can daisy chain with, and it's a tuner as a pedal. Otherwise, the accuracy just ruins it for me.

It can't get any more basic. It has a few modes, Chromatic, Guitar, and Bass, i just use the chromatic, and it works perfectly!

The manual tells you everything there is to know!

Sound Quality : 10
My setup is Epiphone Les Paul Standard -> Boss TU-2 -> Boss DD-20 -> Traynor Custom Valve 40. and it sounds great, the tuner mutes everything when its in use, and when you are playing you cant tell the differnce.

Reliability : 10
it's BOSS, it will live longer than I do.

Never had to get any.

Every guitarist, and bassist NEEDS this pedal!

I found it very easy put i could see why some people have problems with the diffrent tuners avaible i.e. swithcing between bass and guitar and different flats and sharp option, but correct use of the manual could prevent this.

didnt effect the sound of my rig at all.

Very, very easy to use. Big bright LED indicators that would be so easy to see even on the darkest, smokiest stage.

Sound Quality : 10
It makes no sound what so ever, and thats what I like about it.

Reliability : 2
Boss pedals are usually very dependable, but this one was a dud. I worked great for about a year and suddenly died. I take very good care of all my equipment, and was never mistreated or abused.

Customer Support : 2
Customer support was friendly and answered all my questions. I told them I couldn't find my warranty info, and they said they could fix the pedal for $40 an hour plus parts and shipping. So it would be at least $50 to have $80 pedal repaired. I totally understand charging for repairs that are not under warranty, but $40 an hour is just outrageous. The pedal is obviously defective and should be repaired or replaced free of charge.

I think over-all these are excellent tuners, I just got a lemon.

Really easy to use, several modes for guitar, bass, drop D and flatted. easy to read LED's

I use an epiphone les paul standard (not that great i know) but this pedal even cuts the sound on that thing being run into a Marshall MG30DFX. its disappointing and the sound only gets worse as the battery starts to die. if you are going to buy this pedal buy it used and make sure that the Lights and input work, (thats all you need) and buy it cheap and then get a true by-pass to get it out of your loop.

Reliability : 7
built sort of ok, the wiring sucks i opened it up and it pretty much fell apart. but if you dont plan on taking it apart no porblems.

I have been playing for 4 years and think that this is an excellent pedal but do not pay over $70 for it. i got ripped off. (guitar center what do you expect?) buy a true bypass switch and you are set that would be a sweet set-up.

Simple. A quick read of the manual is all it takes.

Sound Quality : 9
Obviously there's no sound as such - so I'll just talk about one or two other things. I use as the first pedal in my chain. If you buy a link-up power cable you can run all your other pedals of this. This definitely influenced my decision to buy it.
No problem with the pedal at all - I've gigged it, and it's extremely nice to use. If you have a couple of bars to spare in a song, you can hit the pedal, cut out completely and tune up, before reemerging in perfect pitch. You should be able to be in perfect pitch in 10-20 seconds with this piece.

Reliability : 10
Absolutely reliable. No problems yet, no backup necessary.

Overall Rating : 10
No, I've said all I have to say, it only remains for me to recommend this pedal highly. You will never need another tuner.
