Well building it takes time if you are a beginner. Just know that going into the project and have fun assembling it! Building the board was easier for me than the wiring. I think if I were to do it again- I would forgo their advice about putting all the jacks in and would wire it out of the box and then put in the jacks.
As for using it- piece of cake. Delay, Decay and Level- that's all you need.

Well, I have to say that this is probably the best delay I have ever heard and used. I have a very expensive "boutique" pedal that albeit does a minute delay- but sounds nothing like this. The sound is very analogish and is not at all shrilly like typical digitals. I put in the self-oscillating resistor- and it sounds freaking cool.

Time will tell- the only thing that stinks about the design for me is the LED. I know that they made it easier for the newer model though.

The BYOC website is awesome- they have a great reader board for problem solving- and it really helped me out of a jam.

I love this pedal. I'm actually selling my other digital delay and using this one. I am going to order a 50k pot to increase the delay, but that's the only gripe I have with it. It sounds so true to my tone and is a very solid design. I can't wait to build the next one.

mine is the non-bezel version where the status LED is mounted to the circuit board.
3 knobs
- Delay time
- Blend (volume of repeats)
- Repeats
1 on/off footswitch
Instructions to build are on the website. easy step by step walk through from populating the circuit board, wiring it all up.
all you do is solder it and paint/decorate it

great analogish digital delay. i replaced the 25K pot repeat pot for 50K to double the delay time to 600ms.
also built it with self oscillation to get the crazy dj rewind/ufo/lawn mower noise effects.
great for slight slapback or U2 edge style delays
a bit of digital nasty ness when the delay time and repeats are maxed out (with the 50K) pot but i never use settings to that extreme

i was stupid enough to try populate the circuit board whilst still jetlagged from a 2 month holiday (over 36hours no sleep) and managed to solder wrong components and destroy some pcb paths (which i fixed with some dodgy point to point wiring)
also had some dodgy solder joints which were all my fault, but i check each step with my multimeter.
got it working with no unwanted noise/hiss/volume drops etc
all the parts (footswitch,jacks,pots/knobs, enclosure) feel of high quality.

this is my second BYOC kit.first being the 250+ which was a much easier build (not as many components and more space to work with) i love it...cant wait to get my next kit which will be a tubescreamer clone.
i use this mainly with my Epiphone Valve Jr + Laney 2x10 cab and sometimes with my Framus Cobra+Framus CS212 cab.

It is VERY easy to get a good sound out of it. In fact, after completing the build last night I spent hours with it, and the only "bad" (but still would be useful for effect, just not in a band situation) sound I could get out of it was when I went to extremes with the "blend" setting and delay setting, and repeats. In the instructions for building they have two mistakes. One in a drawing of where you place the potentiometers, they mention a 50k pot, but it really is a 25k (or vice versa, this is from memory), and another is not strictly a mistake, they mention if you don't want it to be able to go into self-oscillation use a "provided" extra resistor in place of one of them...but they don't provide it. Still, easy enough to pick one up at Radio Shack.
One word of warning, when you build, or paint the box before installing, don't use their designations for the controls.
They use "Delay", "Blend", and "Repeats" if I remember. These should instead be labeles "Delay Time", "Level", and "Repeats", if you want to keep to the standard way of notating.
Not sure how to rate this...I choose to ignore the build and instructions, since folk also buy this completely built.
I am not being generous with the rating, I have 6 other delays, plus those built into some ME pedals, and this is absolutely dead easy to adjust to a good sound. AS good as the echo section of my H2O.

Last night I played it straight in from Strat->BYOC Delay->Fender Deluxe Reverb II. I couldn't believe how good it sounded.
It might appear (since I have 6 other delays) that I am a delay junkie, but though I love tooling around with them, for playing in my band I tend to want simple (non-modulation on delay) delays. For playing like "Red House" and "Sinners Prayer", etc. I need a decent range and this has it. I never have been that big a fan of "slapback" but honestly...I happened upon a pretty slapback-like setting, and it was fantastic. This pedal is really something.
It's TB so no tone suck when off. When on, the sound of the delayed signal is clear and VERY present. The only thing, if you up the level to max, it can sound a little strange if you also have repeats way up and delay close to max.
That is the main thing if I had to pick one attribute for this delay, it would be that the delay is lush and PRESENT. Often delays make the guitar sound distant. This puts it back up front.

I won't rate this, since it is up to the builder who makes it (YOU) how sturdy it is. Other than that, the components are good quality, resistors are all 1%'ers, and footswitch is excellent quality.

Not really sure. I have built now three BYOC pedals, all worked right off the bat, ALL were good quality. I built the Tremolo, and the Fuzz.

I play blues in a blues band...but also Hendrix, also my own weird music, alt, etc. This is a FANTASTIC match. Honestly, I have been searching for something like this, up til now using an H2O which I also think is great, but sometimes I don't want the chorus and echo and size of the H2O and til now haven't had a good enough alternative. Now I do.
Some of my other delays are: (had a Memory Lane as well, sold it), Visual Sound H2O, Ibanez DE-7 (also very good, but not TB), Danelectro Reel Echo (fun and excellent, but WAY huge..to big and complicated to use gigging), Digitech Digidelay (very fun), and some others, as well as the built in ones in RP-7, etc.
This...I hate to say it because it is so cliche, but THIS pedal sounds ORGANIC...there I did it. It's true though...
This review was not even considering the price, but when you do...it is incredibly inexpensive, it's FUN to build, and the size is perfect.
I DO wish BYOC included schematics of their pedals. I can't see why they don't I doubt they'd lose a penny, and it would be fun to have. People here and on other BYOC talk about "and if it breaks I can fix it"...well, if it is mechanicl, or something burns up yeah...but you aren't going to easily get far if a component fails without knowing what it is doing.
I would definitely buy it again if I lost it.

You've got to build it yourself, I got my friend to since he's good with electronics, I watched the process and think I'd do a pretty good job. Just follow the instructions well and you'll be ok..
I haven't seen the insides of the other units, but this one seemed fairly straightforward.
Using the pedal is pretty easy, 3knobs, just adjust to what sounds good to you.

Of course this is where it matters!
I was pretty knocked out straight away when I played it, it does sound really analogue.. first amp I tried it on was a cube30 on the Blackpanel setting with a 72 reissue fender strat and Gibson 67 reissue V.. just very easy to get a good sound.. the good thing, unlike a lot of pedals, is that you can get a good sound at pretty much any setting.. it's got a lot of smooth tone and warmth..
In my opinion, I'd like a little bit more time on the delay.. but this is where this pedal excels.. if you don't like something, change it, cos you know your way around the insides already! There's plenty of info on the net and through the website to do this.

Building it yourself means you only use good solid parts. If it was to break (which mine hasn't), then I'd feel much more confident doing something about it myself and opening it up, which I'd think twice about when dealing with my brand pedals.
It's pretty much as reliable as the parts and how well it's put together by you...
I'll put no opinion here since I've not had it long enough to really test it...It's been good so far!

Not had to deal with customer support, but my friend had emailed the guy who makes/designs these and said he got back to him promptly and was very helpful. Good to know.

I have a bunch of effects, guitars and amps.. been playin for 15 years, been through indie, rock and metal styles.. for last several years I've been playing mainly funk... I love vintage style sounds and have an original Wem Watkins Copycat (tape loop) which I would not gig cos it's so huge.. This pedal does exactly what it should and does it well, and can do the best things the copycat can do... infinite loops!!!
What makes this cool, if you're into the customization thing, is that the quality is on a par with pedals that cost double or more..this is a pretty important factor because it's the three or four hours you spent making it that actually bring the price down, labor is up2 u!...
The main thing is, I step on it, and it makes me create new stuff because it sounds good.. that's the test of a good product to me.

this pedal is pretty easy to use!!!!!! dont get me wrong though, it is a DIY pedal which took me 4 hours to assemble......there is a pdf on the website for free which tells you how to build it..and if you build it you should know how to fix it!!
there is a mod, that i havent done, that doubles your delay time to 1200ms from the standard 600ms.....it does self oscillate which is always good...and it is true bypass!!!
SOUNDS ANALOG!

-i play ambience and rock and and some electro.....this will work with anything!
-ive been playing guitar for 4 years and keys for one.....
-i play a gibson hawk through a fender deluxe reverb and many homemade pedals.
-i love that i can fix it and trust it andthat it is true bypass...i loved the easy to solder pc board and i love that the chip keeps the delay going even when its off so u can turn the oscillation on and off.
-i have a dd-3 and a 1970's memory man...and it is the perfect balance in between...the dd-3 delay time (800ms) and the memory mans sweet distorted analog repeats....
-delays are a good thing to have no matter what insturement you play!!! and this is a great pedal for any player!
