There are 4 control knobs for this device; blend, delay, chorus depth, chorus rate (aka vibrato). There is also a button that turns the effect on or off. When on a green light strobes the vibrato rate. It has one 1/4 inch input, two 1/4 inch outputs (one which is brighter than the other); outputs used in tandem produce a stereo output effect. The unit comes with a DC adaptor plug.
How do you operate the knobs? go here for the best explanation, the main datasheet explains how the knobs work:
http://dlseffects.com/files/cv/Chorus%7EVib_Datasheet.pdf
Unfortunately the best way of getting the sound YOU want is by experimenting with the knobs. There are some sample settings that come with the unit to help get you started but in the end you'll have to adjust the knobs to get the sound you want. The sample settings can be found here:
http://dlseffects.com/files/cv/Chorus%7EVib_Settings.pdf
Although it is easy to use it will take some time before you find the exact combination of knob settings that you want for your application. There also aren't any presets that you can store so if the knobs move around on you during transportation you're back to tweaking the unit to get it right.

My use of the pedal is a little unique. I have a hammond B3 clone that produces good hammond tone but a lousy Hammond Chorus/Vibrato effect. I was contemplating selling the clone because of the crappy effect. I came across this pedal and wrote to the company explaining the effect I was trying to achieve. The engineer believed that this pedal could accurately reproduce the hammond "vibrato scanner" effect. I decided to take a chance on spending money on the pedal rather than money on a new keyboard simply to upgrade the vibrato/scanner effect. I was able to emulate the classic "C3" vibrato scanner effect with this pedal by setting it up side by side with my real Hammond B3. I took about 30 minutes A-Bing the real hammond with my clone connected to this pedal. I fooled around with all the dials until the chorus/vibrato effect from this pedal sounded as close as I could get it to my Hammond B3. Now my clone (with this pedal) sounds much closer to a real hammond, so much so that I have concluded that I will not replace the clone.
When the unit is moved from by-pass to active there is no loss of gain nor hiss introduced to the line. It produces no extraneous noise.

This pedal's enclosure uses metal construction. They also powder coat the enclosure rather than paint it. The pots and jacks are steel, not plastic. The unit is rather big and a bit heavy but solid as a rock. It does sound quite "warm", not digital.
I purchased mine used however you would never know. It didn't have a scratch on it (probably due to its powder-coated finish). It looks and operates as if it were brand new. It still doesn't have one scratch on it and i could resell it in "mint condition".

For my application it works great. The alternative would have been to spend about $1700 for a new keyboard that has the latest hammond "vibrato scanner" effect. This pedal gets me there and is much closer to the vibrato-scanner effect on my keyboard (which i now just bypass).
It's always nice to hear what the unit might sound like, especially if you are not close by a dealer to actually demo the pedal. To get an idea of what this pedal might sound like go here:

Very nice sounding unit. it's a combo of analog/digital circuitry and maybe that's why it sounds this good. have owned/tried many chorus' and I think this is probably the best. Boss CH1, CE-2, DC-3, Fulltone Choralflange, Analogman Clone Chorus, Ibanez Cs-9. It really is capable of subtle to very thick warm sounds and anything between. there is a bit of noise when it's switched on, but it's worth it. you can have little bits of delay or lots, even some sounds that approach a Leslie, and definitely vibrato too. only goofy thing is placement of in and out jacks are reversed. doesn't rob tone and has great freq response - true by-pass, etc. The mix control on this is really valuable!

i play jazz, funk, rock, avant-garde, noise, whatever. have been for many many years. though I kind of OD'd on chorus sound in my earlier days, it is nice to have a versatile really good quality chorus at my feet in case I want to kick it in for a tune or too. really has a nice creamy sound. if it were stolen, I'd probably buy another (expensive though!). in addition, I tried a Carl Martin, and have heard the TC Electronic model, but I thought they were too sterile (metalic) sounding. The HomeBrew Chorus was pretty cool too, but the DLS seemed to take the cake.

Anytime a piece of gear has some new knobs on it, it can be a bit daunting, and the delay and blend knobs on this pedal are a bit different than the average chorus. But there are several things that make this an easy-to-use pedal. First, the pedal sounds good right out of the box with everything set to 12 o'clock. Second, it is difficult to impossible to get an unusable sound from this unit (some are obviously not appropriate for certain songs, but everything sounds good no matter where you put the dials). And finally, the manual provides some great settings to start with. I'm docking one point because the company says their engineers are also musicians, and they put the input and output jacks on the top of the pedal, not on the side.

The blend of digital an analog technologies makes this a unique sounding pedal. It can't nail that 80s chorus sound with the same accuracy as my Arion SCH-1, but that pedal is on the fritz and needed to be replaced. However, it does get such a wide range of different chorus sounds that it would normally take multiple chorus pedals to emulate. Through my Johnson J Station, it sounds a bit brittle, but then again all modeling amps have their limitations. This thing really shines through my Fender Pro Junior, very rich sounding. Set it to one of the leslie settings, put a bit of gain on my Jekyll & Hyde before the pedal, and toss my strat to its neck pickup, and it NAILS that grinding, chewy leslie churn. Kudos.
My only beef is that the switch is so loud that the vibrations of turning it on and off get picked up by other mics. Not a huge deal, but again, for a company that is made of musicians, I would have expected more.

I play primarily in my church praise band, so normal-but-versatile is a must (no need for a ring modulator here, but several different chorus sounds sure are nice). This pedal fits well with my needs. Also, the sound samples on the website are very achievable. If it were lost or stolen, I would replace it with the same. The only things I wish it had was a quieter switch and normal jack placement.

Easy to get a good sound right away - but there's more, much more. It can be a set and forget pedal, but I think there is much to appeal to tweakers. The delay and blend controls allow for a lot of variations and time is well spent in exploring the possibilities. Manual gives some good starting points for different settings. Vibrato type sounds are pretty darn good - can go from mild modulation to extreme warble.

DLS says that the Chorus-Vib is made with analog and digital technology. I'd say that it does sound like a hybrid. It's warm but clear in a way that's different than an all analog or all digital pedal. The bright output adds the right amount of sheen, and works well in series with my pedalboard - in fact, all of my pedals seem to interface very musically with the Chorus-Vib. There is no discernable noise added even when the blend control is maxed.

Once in a while the unit needs to be shut down and "rebooted" when the effected part of the signal mysteriously dissapears. Other than that occasional glitch, construction is very solid, and I'd gig without a backup.

This is only my third chorus pedal in almost 30 years. I used the Boss CE-2 in the late 70s and got so sick of "that sound" I didn't revisit it until recently. Prior to the DLS, I used the Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus which I liked it for extreme settings (mild thickening or fast leslie), but not for basic chorus sounds. With this pedal, chourus is good again. The blend control really makes it possible to dial in exactly what the music needs. The delay control provides very nice thickening possiblilites, plays well with others and it does a really good vibrato!

This unit comes with a "settings" sheet that is really quite useful, I really have not needed to stray from what is on the sheet. Plenty of settings for a variety of purposes. The few settings I came up with on my own were actually exact replicas of what was already on the settings sheet. Well done. No matter where the knobs are set the sound is always useful, a very forgiving unit, the bottom line is that it is a very musical piece!

The DLS chorus sits in the effects loop of a Genz Benz El'Diablo C60 tube combo. It sits between a Rocktron Shorttimer delay and a line 6 Verbzilla (reverb.) I have a host of other dirt boxes etc. that I run straight into the front of the amp. Guitar is a modified strat. With all that being said the DLS chorus is a fantastic sounding box. I have had many other chorus pedals in the past but this is the most refined and musical. Like one of the other reviewers had stated I was also a little put out with the price but after it was all hooked up in my rig and dialed in any buyers remorse dissapeared instantly. It is also dead quiet and does not color the tone when not in use.

I mostly play rock and experimental stuff. Been messing around with music for 40 years most all of it guitar. If my DLS chorus came up missing I would replace it with the same. It does exactally what it was built to do and it does it well. I do wish it had silent switching for recording purposes but most all my other pedals have the same type of switching system ...... just have to keep them away from sensitive condenser mic's when stomping around. All in all for my purposes this is all the chorus I need, a quality piece.

I'm using this pedal for acoustic and electric setups. My acoustic is a Lowden O25c with a Sunrise magnetic sound hole pickup either direct or with a Fender acoustic amp. The electric is a '99 AmStd Fender Strat thru a Deluxe Reverb.
In both cases, this pedal adds no noise to the signal and provides head-turning chorus. I don't like a lot of chorus so I really like the dial-in ability with this pedal to give me exactly what I want. I'm going with a 10 for sound quality because I'm that pleased with this pedal.

It's a pretty rugged unit. Steel chassis, steel switches, steel pots. I'm an electronics packaging engineer and design systems for satellites...I'd fly this if we needed to send a chorus pedal in orbit.
As for a backup, redundancy is one way to increase reliability, but in this case, you'd only move the 4th place decimal, so no. Another 10.

I was still holding a grudge about the price of the pedal, but when I got it home and got it into my setup (Fender Tele, Mesa Boogie V1, Bad Horsie 2 wah pedal, and 65 Twin Reverb) I was suprised I didn't pay for it with a kidney. This thing is incredible. On any mode or setting you can dial up bright and lucid tones or lush, throbbing pulses. It's amazing! What I like the most about it is definately its versatility. This thing takes a little getting used to. The delay knob is the most mysterious to me - I know there are some differences in the waveforms and delay times, but I'd like to know what they are from a technical standpoint. Also, it took me a little while to realize that anything past 10 o'clock on the speed knob could no longer qualify as chorus. Nonetheless, great unit. I give it an eight because of the slightly longer learning curve - it is very easy now to get good sounds. But its equally as easy to get weird and over-processed sounds. It's as if they gave you the whole chorus pallet and you get to learn the landscape before you find what you like and don't like.
Sound Quality
:
10
Superb. The Chorus and Leslie sounds are lovely. You can really get nice lush or thin or chimey or whatever choruses you want. I'm not sure I buy the "vibrato" settings - they sound a little processed to me. But alas, I bought it for the chorus, and that is top notch. Much more range of sounds than the TC Electronic.
The leslie (rotation speaker) settings are fun, but it's easy to get a weird sound also. Tricky, but useful.
It also is very uncoloured in bypass mode. That is a nice bonus. And the blend knob is a real plus, the ability to vary the wetness of the signal is much missed in other choruses. So this is great.
As a side note, I read the previous review, and it does create some noise if your amp is very quiet. But turn the amp up, and you can't tell any difference in the noise level in bypass or in chorus. Not sure what this is, and it is curious.

Don't know, but it looks well made. Heavy gauge steel, nothing that appears to be able to fall off. The pot shafts are metal, and the bypass button is one of those heavy metal things. If this thing breaks, I'd predict it to be in a situation where nothing else survived either.

This pedal has 4 knobs, three of which make sense. The blend, depth, and speed settings are self explanatory. But the "delay" setting, 7 discreetly different settings, are a mystery to me. The difference in them is unclear, although one can hear it. A manual with some description would help. Getting the right sound out of this thing requires some getting used to, and I don't find them very convincing.

I have very little good to say about most chorus pedals and this one is no exception. While it is indeed possible to get many good tones out of this unit, as the previous reviewers mention, this pedal has many flaws that make it difficult to praise.
First of all, this pedal is very noisy when chorus is in. I have a Mesa F-50 and play several guitars through it. Lately, I've been playing my Strat through this pedal and I notice that an otherwise quiet setting launches into a hideous hiss when the chorus is turned on. In bypass, no hiss. In Chorus, lots of hiss. Unacceptable hiss. This is jut plain wrong for a pedal of this stature and respect. (Judging by the previous comments, I thought this thing would be flawless.) I tested this by plugging in my 12 year old DOD flange and voila - no noise in flange.
Second, this chorus has a curious ticking sound when the chorus is off. When I switch off the noisy thing into bypass, the hiss goes away. But there is a very noticable ticking noise in the background. Again, unacceptable.
Third, there is only a very small usable range of sounds. Let me say this another way: Many good chorus and leslie tones can come out of this unit. But there are many more useless, plastic sounding sounds coming out of this thing. It has tons of range and most of that range is horrible or sick sounding. And some of the "delay" settings are just plain unrealistic sounding.
Fourth, this unit really changes your tone in a very noticable way. It is in no way transparent. That's plain and simple. I would like to be able to send my guitar through it and get my guitar chorused. Instead, I get this tuby sounding effect that resembles my guitar a little with chorus thrown over it.
Don't get me wrong, this pedal can sound good, and it's built well. But I can't recommend a hiss factory, especially when you pay $190 for it.

i finally got my chorus~vib yesterday. OH MY GOD!!! for one, this is the only pedal that does a tc elect's clean sparkle/shimmer thang. period! my tc finally bit the dust a few years ago, after almost 20 years, & the fact that they still sell for bloody $300 made me step back & have a look around. but it seems to be the vogue to copy the boss ce-2 because they equate it's sound with "analogue fatness"; i always thought they sounded too murky & busy. the tc not only let your guitar sound survive, it always made it sound better. but there was one area that could have been better.enter the dls effects chorus~vib! it does the sparkle/shimmer WITH BODY!!! and it doesn't stop there. it does analog fat as well, but without the murky cloudiness. and it does a decent leslie, to boot! i always felt the tc to be the only choice for a chorus. not any more! the chorus~vib has taken the reins, and adds a dramatic 3d quality to the mix. highly recommended!

Other than the DLS Ultra-Chorus which is the big brother to this chorus and perhaps the original Boss CE-1 (which needs a true bypass mod to truly complete), this is the ultimate chorus pedal. I've owned TC, Fulltone, Analogman, Boss CE1,CE2,CE3, CE5 and CE20 along with Maxon CS505, Ibanez and several others. There's really no comparison. The Blend control (which every chorus should have) allows you to set the mix of chorus to pure guitar signal. It's really nice to be able to just dial in a smidge of chorus for certain things where you don't want to be "swimming" in chorus. I found that this unit nails everything from Holdsworth to Metheny to Eric Johnson to Frank Gambale, the 80s thing, etc.
One important thing to note is that it's true bypass in stereo. As far as I know that's unique among these types of pedals. The TC is buffered bypass but it's a horrible implementation. It really thins your sound out and adds high end. Fulltone has true bypass but only in mono mode. I'm not sure about analogman but rest assured that this pedal gives you your original signal IN STEREO in bypass mode.
One other thing I should mention is that your guitar tone stays the same when the chorus is on. I'm not sure if it's because of the way they utilize the blended signals or if it's just part of their design but the guitar just sounds pretty much like your guitar except with the chorus effect blended in. For comparison, the TC Chorus (which I really like, by the way) changes the guitar tone quite a bit. It happens to work ok in chorus mode but only if you're playing clean. DLS' design allows the guitar to sound great clean, semi-distorted, or full-tilt overdrive.

This thing really sounds sweet. true bypass and the warmest chorus I've ever heard. I don't think the vibe part sounds exactly like a 'vibe' but it is still a very nice effect with its own character. I use this pedal at the end of a fulltone supa-trem, reverend drivetrain II and then the dls. I like the stereo-ability of it. it sounds really incredible as a stereo imager with two amps. Most of the time I use this with the rate very slow to give it a slight modulation. it sweetens up my setup really nicely without being overboard, although you can get some really overboard wiggles with this too. the only real weakness are the knobs, hard to adjust with your feet in a live situation, say if you wanted to change the rate without bending over. I replaced the small knobs with some off an old deluxe electric mistress that is dead and now it's perfect. and one final thing, there is a light that modulates to the rate of the effect so you can dial in the right tempo, just like my supa-trem. it's a must have that I never thought I'd use until I had it.

excellent, top of the line, chorus. if you're looking for a quality pedal this is the one to get. I tried the H2O liquid chorus, the boss chorus, and this was the nicest.

There are alot of sounds on this gem, so it takes some time to find all the ones you'll use. Believe me, there's tons of useable tones!! Sample sheet is great too.

I've owned them all including the TC Electronics and old bosses. NOTHING can match the superior 3 dimentional quality of the Chorus~Vib or the guy Dave who builds them. The sound is so beautiful. It can be warm or bright and anything in between. I never stop finding great tones from this unit. GREAT JOB DLS!!

This unit is very easy to use and comes with a very helpful instruction sheet. The sounds are excellent. I have used the Analogman Clone and the Maxon 550 which are both fine chorus pedals themselves. This pedal can simulate their sounds and some. Beautiful rich stereo chorus/vibrato or leslie effects.

I play a Americand Deluxe Fat Strat and a Godin LGXT. I come out of the effects send of a THD Bi-Valve into this pedal then back to a Mesa Boogie 50/50 stereo tube amp into a stereo open back AVATAR 2x12. The tone is lush and very clear. No mushyness in the tone at all. The dials are very easy to use and I can get numerous useful sounds out of it. The Chorus/Vibrato/and Leslie sounds are terrific.

The Build quality is outstanding very well laid out and the components are top notch from what I can see. I think you would have no problem with out a back up.

I play a mix of original tunes and cover tunes. My music has a 70's type rock genere. I have been playing for 20 years on and off and would replace this pedal immediatly if it were lost or stolen. I choose this one after demoing a Maxon 550 and Analogman Clone. Both of these pedals have their own uniqueness and are of high quality. I just feel the DLS Chorus/Vibe is the Mercedes Benz of the bunch. I don't have a specific feature that I love about this pedal. All the features are top notch. This pedal has an important contribution to my song writing creativity and overall tone. I use this pedal in conjunction with a delay in a Wet/Dry cabinet set up in stereo.

3 dial knobs: Blend, Chorus Depth, Chorus Rate...also has a knob with 7 present delay detente settings. One input and two outputs for stereo, or you can select the 'Out A' for a warmer tone or 'Out B' for a bright tone. Includes a page with several different suggested settings for chorus, vibrato, and Leslie sounds. This made it very easier to dial in usable tones. With other chorus pedals I've had to spend a lot ot time dialing in something usable.

This pedal has a lush, full, rich chorus tone. There are lots of options but the included page with sample settings makes it easy to find something you'll like. If you dial it in just right you can also get a nice percussive chorus sound that works well for punchy rhythm tracks.
Setup: Strats and Teles into Holland Little Jimi and BF Deluxe Reverb.
Noise: Very quiet. Pedal is true bypass.
Signal strength: tone is always full and rich. No noticeable volume boost or drop when pedal activated.
Tonality: Should be able to get most familiar chorus tones out of this pedal. They even include a "Rush" suggested chorus setting.
Tonality: the Analog chorus is excellent, feels and sounds just as analog as my Japan-made Boss CS-2. All of the chorus sounds are excellent. Don't use much Vibrato or Leslie effect, but these are very good and very usable.

Very solid, built in a heavy steel housing similar to (but a little bigger than) a Fulldrive 2. Nice powder paint job, very professional finish. Would trust it to use without a backup. Note: Be careful if you remove the rubber feet to help it fit your pedalboard: there's a little star washer that fits between the two pieces of the metal housing, it will fall off when you take the screw out. You can see it easily if you inspect where the screws go through the housing before removing them.

Have not had repair issues, but I contacted DLS effects and asked a few questions before purchasing, also asked a question after the purchase. They were very quick to respond and very friendly.

Bought this from Musictoyz.com 8/02, this pedal just came out. I have a T.C. Chorus, a Boss CE-2, and a Boss Harmonist that has a very good chorus setting. I've also owned/tried just about all the other major chorus pedals out there, including Electro Harmonix (which had that metallic 'crang' feel), Ibanez, Maxon, and the vintage MXR stereo and mono choruses. The Chorus~Vibe is as clear and pristine as the TC chorus, but it has an analog warmth that's missing from the TC. The Chorus~Vibe does all the different chorus sounds but there's an added dimension to the sound. The mono even has a stereo feel to it. The only other unit that comes close to this added spacial effect is the old 1/2 rack Rockman chorus.
This is one of the best chorus pedals I've ever used. I've had it for more than a week and have spent many hours trying different settings with different guitars and different amps, wanted to give it a thorough test drive before posting a review. Also gigged with it this weekend and it passed the "live gig" test: it sounded just as good live as it did in my living room, and it cut through the mix (I've had trouble at times getting my CE-2 to cut through the mix). Another thing I like about this pedal is that once I decided on my favorite setting, it sounded good with my other guitars and both amps. I've used chorus pedals that sounded great with my Strats, but when I plugged in my Teles there was something missing...I had to reset the dials for each guitar and amp. Another cool thing is that my favorite setting works well with a few different Delay settings. I normally use '3,' but is also sounds good on '4' for faster songs. If you want a warm, analog type chorus that is clean and clear enough to cut through the mix, and easy to dial in the sounds you like, I'd suggest giving the Chorus~Vibe a try.
